Preferential treatment

I’ve learnt a great deal in the lead up to these Local Government Elections. I’ve learned how much you can spend on corflute and A- frame signs, on t-shirts, face masks and other printed essentials if you really put your mind to it. I’ve learned that the people of Ward 3 quite like the idea of having an independent, non-aligned representative speaking up for them on Council. And I’ve even learned how the proportional representation voting system works. I won’t bore you with the details here. Suffice to say voters should always keep in mind that it is their vote they are casting, not the big parties’ vote. If you’ve made up your mind which group or party will be getting your first preference you may well receive instructions from them on how they want you to direct your second, third and later preferences. Remember, this is your decision not theirs. You do not have to fall into line with the preference deals they may have forged with other groups and parties. If I am your first preference vote, thank you very much. If I’m not your first choice candidate I hope that you will consider giving me your second preference. I believe it is vital to improving the openness and transparency of local government that control is not concentrated in one corner or another. I look forward to knowing the result of our collective decision on Saturday 4 December or soon after that. I’d like to thank my fellow candidates for the manner with which they have gone about their respective campaigns and wish them all the best. www.thelocalnewcastle.com.au

Street signs point to unity (left to right) Zara’s House Sister Diana Santleben, Zara’s House financial administrator Mary Amponsah, #RacismNotWelcome ambassador and former Socceroos captain Craig Foster, lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes, and Zara’s House project coordinator Farida Baremgayabo.

New street signs are being installed in key locations across Newcastle as part of a grassroots initiative to show that racism is not welcome within our community. Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said Newcastle is a diverse and inclusive community with a proud multicultural history. “Newcastle has a long and proud history as a progressive, welcoming city and is officially a Refugee Welcome Zone,” Cr Nelmes said. “City of Newcastle has taken the lead in tackling racism and....we are proud to join this grassroots campaign by erecting

#RacismNotWelcome street signage and will continue to send out the message that racism will not be tolerated in our community.” Former Socceroos captain, human rights campaigner and #RacismNotWelcome ambassador Craig Foster said the street sign campaign was devised to get to the heart of communities where racism lives. “The street signs are the physical manifestation of the underlying principle that racism exists, it is real, damaging and deeply harmful to many Australians and that we all have a responsibility to confront it, every day,” Mr Foster said.

“The path ahead for every local council and for us as a country is to proclaim loudly, publicly and visibly that we’re united together as people against division, against discrimination on all grounds and, in this context, race. “I’d like to thank City of Newcastle for getting behind this important movement by declaring that Newcastle Local Government Area rejects discrimination of all kinds.” #RacismNotWelcome street signs will be erected over coming weeks in a number of places including, locally, McDonald Jones Stadium on Turton Rd, New Lambton and Blue Gum Rd, Jesmond.

Santa’s Harley helper in Lambton

When life gets busy, we all need to ask for a helping hand. And the busiest man in the world on Christmas Eve is no exception. For many years, Santa Claus has asked for help spreading Christmas cheer from his good friend Chris Heath. You see, Santa loves Chris’s Harley. In fact, we think secretly Santa sometimes wishes he had one just like it. He knows that people of all ages and backgrounds love to see Santa’s helper rumbling past as their excitement builds for Christmas. This Christmas Eve, Santa will be dropping by for the 5pm Service at St John’s Anglican Church in Lambton. After he has talked to the people there (Chris might even have a little treat for them), he looks forward to riding around Lambton Park to say “Ho, ho, ho” to other locals. If you know someone who would love to wave to Santa going by, plan to be in Lambton Park at around 6.30 pm on 24th December or come and join us for some festive carol singing at 5 pm at St John’s. For any further information call Kate on 4957 1073.

Santa’s helper Chris Heath will be at St John’s Anglican Church then around Lambton Park on Christmas Eve

Trial keeps coffee capsules out of landfill

An Australian-first pilot program will allow 3,000 households in Newcastle to recycle aluminium coffee pods through their kerbside bins. Households participating in the Curby Coffee Capsule trial will receive a specially designed bright orange bag to collect their used aluminium capsules, which they can then place in their kerbside recycling bins for collection. The trial will provide vital insights to help inform the development of a national coffee capsule recycling scheme, which is being developed in collaboration with Planet Ark. City of Newcastle Manager of Waste Services Troy Uren said the trial would add to the suite of wasterecovery initiatives in Newcastle, which are all designed to reduce the amount of rubbish going to landfill.

“A survey of more than 500 Newcastle residents last year found 98% felt it was important to divert waste from landfill,” Mr Uren said. “With the introduction of the Curby Coffee Capsule trial, we’re pleased to offer residents an opportunity to become involved with another innovative solution to increase resource recovery at the kerbside.” The capsules will be separated from other recycling then transferred to the Nespresso recycling system separating into coffee grounds and aluminium. From here, the aluminium will go to aluminium producers, saving 95% of the energy required to source aluminium from scratch, with coffee grounds going to local commercial compost. iQ Renew CEO Danial Gallagher said the trial shows community’s desire for new kerbside recycling

solutions using the yellow lidded bin. “The trial is proving that we can harvest the Curby bag containing aluminium capsules at the recycling facility,” Mr Gallagher said. With funding for the trial provided by Nespresso, General Manager Jean-Marc Dragoli said the company’s experience in developing similar recycling schemes overseas had shown that convenience is king when it comes to the success of recycling. Participation in the trial is limited to the first 3,000 households in Newcastle that sign up before 10 December. Interested residents can register at www.curbythebilby.com. au/coffeecapsules or via the Curby App at the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

HELP with Elaine Abery of Unravelling Red Tape

Anyway, whose responsibility is it? Dear Here to Help, A couple of years ago, in summer, there was a massive seaweed event on my local beach. The weather was really hot and the seaweed started rotting, attracting flies and smelling after a couple of days. The Council did nothing! We complained and still they did nothing. We could smell it at home and it was just gross. Surely, it was some kind of public health risk and council should have cleaned it up immediately! After all, it’s council’s job. That’s why I pay my taxes. Great question! Your story illustrates the difficult line between what is a public responsibility (for government), what is a private responsibility (for

individuals) and what is a collective responsibility (for communities). Let’s break that down. Most people take charge of their own personal circumstances. Generally, we feed, house and cloth ourselves and our families – that is a personal responsibility. For some people, they are unable to do that for themselves, so it becomes a collective responsibility (eg charity) or a public responsibility (eg government housing). Ideally, government steps in when people can’t do things for themselves, either alone or by forming a group (like a charity) to do things together. This is just practical – if government did everything for us, government would be even larger and more expensive than it is now. Let’s come back to your beach issue – as a beachside community, you and your neighbours and other beachgoers are more agile than any government department. That means that together, you can organise yourself to help solve the problem quickly. On the other hand, to deal with the seaweed problem, government would need to reprioritise its works program, reallocate staff and heavy machinery and go back on its promises to do other things for other parts of your community. My suggestion would be to talk to a charity or community group, such as Clean Up Australia, for tips on how best to approach the issue. You may be able to partner with a charity, local business or council – if they can’t clean up the mess immediately, can they deliver a skip bin (or similar) and PPE while you and your neighbours get out and get messy and make the beach (and your lives) more enjoyable? Who knows - the sense of accomplishment and connections you make working together to clean your beach might just help making your local community an even better place to live.

THAT WAS THEN This is now

with Lachlan Wetherall

A very long road story

Some roads in our city snake across the landscape following ridges or valleys, while others cut expansive straight lines across suburbia. In the former category are roads such as Grandview Rd in New Lambton Heights. In the latter category are roads such as Chatham Rd/St in the Hamilton area, and the curious Marshall St which has four disconnected sections running through five different suburbs, from Rankin Park to Garden Suburb. These long straight roads have more to do with geometry than geography. They originated from the patchwork quilt of rectangular land grants in the mid19th century, where it was common for roads to be planned along property borders. Such is the case with Marshall St, where an 1884 map shows a three-mile un-named road separating the Scottish Australian Mining Company from Joseph Weller’s 2500 acre land grant. It remained a road in plan only until the 1920s, when the Scottish Australian Mining Company built the first section as part of “The Lookout Subdivision” in New Lambton Heights. In 1925 it was named “Boundary Rd”, an eminently suitable title as over the years various portions of it divided mining leases, parishes, suburbs, municipalities, and state and federal electorates. In 1933 New Lambton Council changed the name to Marshall St, in recognition of one of the road’s earliest residents, James Gordon Marshall. In 1945 the NSW government unveiled big plans for the road network in Newcastle, including a highway from Rankin Park to Jesmond traversing the bush where the northern section of Marshall St existed Page 18 > The Local > December 2021

only as a line on the map. Plans for this highway then changed many times over many years. In September 2021, Transport for NSW called for tenders for the construction of the $450 million final section of the Newcastle Inner City Bypass, with work to commence in 2022. The expected opening in 2025 will be the final chapter in a 140-year story of a road, from nameless marks on a map to major motorway. You can view more details of this story at lachlanwetherall.com Below: Long range road plans from 1945. Construction of the Rankin Park to Jesmond section is expected to commence in 2022. On opposite page: Top left: On a 1960s map the never built Marshall Street is shown as straight line, with the proposed bypass curving through the Jesmond bushland. Girl A by

Abigail Dean Girl A is a psychological drama (not quite a thriller like it’s marketed as) about a girl who escaped the ‘house of horrors’ she grew up in. The book is loosely based on some real life cases where children have been locked up & tortured by their “parents”. Girl A is harrowing and difficult to read in some parts. It’s essentially a “where are they now” about seven kids who went through hell, and how they have survived the psychological damage their parents inflicted on them. It’s one of those stories that you can’t put down - it’s engaging and keeps you turning the pages in search of all the answers. There are time jumps, between present day and past trauma. There are seven chapters - one for each of the children, which means the chapters are crazy long, an hour + of reading each. This book is good, really good. I’d give it 4.5 stars. I just couldn’t quite give it the full 5 stars. The ending left me with some uncertainty (mostly because I overanalyse everything). There were a few information gaps and sometimes the shifting in timelines left me a bit confused. Review by Natalie Anderson Is there a book you would like to review? Hay fever

Hay fever is the common name for allergic rhinitis. It is an allergic reaction in the nose, throat and eyes. Hay fever often occurs in spring and summer, when it is caused by airborne pollens from trees, plants and grasses. Medicines can relieve and prevent symptoms of hay fever. Hay fever is usually caused by inhaling pollens that are present in the air at certain times of the year. Some people have symptoms of allergic rhinitis all year round. Constant symptoms can be caused by allergens such as animal hair, moulds, house dust mites and cockroaches. A doctor can arrange ‘allergy skin tests’ to help find the cause of allergic rhinitis. Symptoms of allergic rhinitis include: • sneezing • runny nose • blocked nose (congestion) • itching nose, ears, mouth or throat • puffy, itchy, watery and red eyes • headaches • post-nasal drip (mucus from the nose and sinuses runs down the back of the throat), which can cause coughing • reduced sense of smell and taste • snoring • feeling tired, run-down, irritable. Hay fever symptoms are often worse in the mornings, on windy days and after thunderstorms (when the amount of pollen in the air is highest). An allergic reaction in the nose can also cause sinus problems, including pain and pressure around the cheeks, eyes and forehead. People who get allergic rhinitis often also suffer from other allergic conditions such as asthma, eczema (an itchy skin rash) or hives (itchy, lumpy skin). The symptoms of these conditions may appear or worsen when the allergic rhinitis symptoms appear. To advertise in The Local call Mark on 0455 210 000

Self care Try to find and avoid the things that cause your allergy symptoms. Ways to protect against allergic rhinitis include: • Stay indoors when there is a lot of pollen in the air (e.g. on windy days). • Keep house and car windows closed during pollen season. • Use air conditioning and/ or air filtering systems during pollen season. • Shower and wash your hair after being outdoors. • Wear wrap around sunglasses and a face mask when gardening or outdoors. • Remove house and garden plants that give you allergic rhinitis. • Avoid cigarette smoke and make your house smoke free. • Remove dust with a clean, damp cloth; vacuum instead of sweeping. Medicine? Medicines for allergic rhinitis include: Antihistamines • Reduce allergy reactions in the body. Antihistamines can relieve itching, sneezing, and nose and eye symptoms. • Can give fast relief of symptoms. • Are available as tablets, syrups, nose drops, nose sprays and eye drops. • Some antihistamine tablets and syrups cause drowsiness. Non‑sedating (non-drowsy) antihistamines are also available. Decongestants • Can clear a blocked nose or sinus congestion. • Can give fast relief. • Are available as tablets, syrups, nose drops and nose sprays. • Do not use decongestant nose drops or sprays for more than five days in a row. Corticosteroid nose sprays • Allergic rhinitis involves inflammation of the lining of the nose. Corticosteroid nose sprays (e.g. Rhinocort, Beconase, Telnase, Flixonase, Avamys, Nasonex, Omnaris) can reduce or prevent this inflammation. • Can relieve and also prevent all the symptoms of allergic rhinitis, including itching, sneezing, runny nose, blocked nose and eye symptoms. • Can give some relief within a few hours, but may take several days of regular use to reach their full effect. • To prevent symptoms, they need to be used every day during the allergy season. Some people need to continue treatment indefinitely.

PARENTING

Matters with Mel Burgess of Love Parenting

Actual capacity

It’s that pointy end of the year where most parents are close to self-combusting from all they feel obligated to do. We are sent messages our whole lifetime (primarily from people who want to sell us stuff) that it is our job to make December magical for our family. Think of (and find in stock) the perfect gift that will light up each child’s face. Get to all the endof-schoolyear events. Send in thoughtful teacher gifts. Make the gingerbread houses. Keep up family rituals (Hunter Valley Gardens Christmas lights / Santa photos). Turn up Christmas Day with everyone

dressed speccy and exuding gratitude and cheer. I’m exhausted just from typing those! Take 5 mins now to draw a simple Christmas tree with basic bauble decorations. Next to each bauble write a festive season expectation you have of yourself. Add on all the everyday expectations you have of yourself. This visual exercise will likely validate for you why you are feeling so blipping under-the-pump. With that self-compassion, consider which of those expectations you most want to downgrade to fit with what your ‘actual’ capacity is right now. There is no use working off what you ‘wish’ your capacity was. It’s been a massive year and you only have in your tank what you have in your tank. The kids love the magical stuff for sure, but us in Magical Christmas chase-mode rupturing and repairing our way through December scares them and disconnects them from us. The exact opposite of what we are trying to do. In January I’m launching a series of bite-size exercises and insights like this one designed to help you to enjoy more connection and less overwhelm. Subscribe now to my newsletter to hear more about how you’ll be able to tap into that offering. www.loveparenting.com.au/#subscribe

VET Chat by Dr Fiona Wallace

of New Lambton Veterinary Clinic

Thinking of a puppy this Christmas?

Merry Christmas! I wonder how many families are considering a Christmas puppy this year? In many ways school holidays are a great time to start a puppy up, with family at home on a break and children needing diversion….but remember, like anything else, a little bit of planning goes a long way!

First, consider the breed. It’s hard not to want that same dog that your family always had when you were a kid, but consider – if you are a runner, no matter how much you admire Aussie bull dogs they will only slow you down. If you have (or are planning) small children, loyal as they are, working dogs are likely to get bored and frustrated with a life structured around sleep times and play group! Have a look at Dogzonline, go down to Hillsborough on a Sunday morning and chat to a few of the dog owners there. But above all become informed and thoughtful about this important decision. Next, prepare for your pup. Where will he sleep? What will he eat? How will you cater for him when you are all out? Are there any areas (or all) of the house where he will not be allowed to go? Discuss and decide now so that all of the family are on the same page and a consistent message is delivered to the pup as soon as he arrives. Finally, commit to training from day one. Puppy preschool is an important part of this for socialisation and training. It is the first step in owning a relaxed socialised pup. It is a forum to ask all those niggly questions (eg is this normal puppy behaviour or is my pup a total lunatic??!!). And it provides cutting edge information about leadership, canine body language, environmental enrichment and much more.

MIND

Matters by Dr Stuart Edser

Principal Psychologist at Newcastle Psychology & Health

Christmas 2021

I spent New Years Eve 2019 in Rotorua in New Zealand relaxing after a big year. Returning to Australia a week or so later to begin 2020 refreshed and ready to re-open my Practice, I could not have dreamed that not so long afterwards, we would all be plunged into a pandemic, the likes of which, no-one had seen in over a hundred years. We all had to learn new ways of doing things, we had to learn to think not only of ourselves but also on how our behaviour might affect others. This was big. We hadn’t had a

communitarian solidarity that encompassed the whole of society since the end the war. In 2020, we were all in it together, doing our best and hoping like crazy that the scientists would be able to create a vaccine. Now, at the end of a second year of Covid-19, we are in a different place, not out of the woods yet, but certainly free from interminable and recurrent lockdowns. We are all a little fatigued with the whole thing, all happy to see some light at the end of the tunnel. We know Australia has fared well compared to other countries, but that is not to diminish the hardship for our businesses and the loss for many people of loved ones. Whether you are religious or not, Christmas is a time for hope and renewed love. It would be wonderful this year to be thankful to the scientists who worked so hard on the vaccines, for our various governments who for the most part have tried very hard to make wise decisions for the greater good, and for the goodwill between us all, which has seen us through a very challenging time. Let’s hope for a peaceful Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year. Happy Christmas from all of us at Newcastle Psychology and Health

LAW

Changes to the land titles system in NSW

Until now, paper Certificates of Title were still issued to landowners whose properties were unencumbered. What does this mean for you? On 11 October 2021, all existing Certificates of Title were cancelled and they are no longer legal documents. The Torrens Register is the single source of truth as to a person’s interest in land. When undertaking a property transaction in the future, you will need to engage a Lawyer or Conveyancer who is a subscriber to an Electronic Lodgement Network. They will follow strict obligations in preparing and lodging dealings that are to be electronically registered on the Torrens Register held by the NSW Land Registry. A landowner will be required to provide evidence of their right to deal with the property, using a combination of things such as identification documents, council rates notice, utility accounts and/or land tax assessment. A cancelled Certificate of Title, even though no longer a legal document, can also be used in support. These documents will link the landowner’s interest in the land and confirm their right to deal. These steps are quite new and will no doubt be refined by the Registrar General as time progresses.

On 11 October 2021 new changes to the Land Titles System in NSW were implemented to further transition NSW away from paper-based land processes and to progress NSW towards 100% electronic lodgement of all land transactions. The Office of the Registrar General abolished Certificates of Title for landowners. Traditionally, Disclaimer: This article is provided for information a bank or other financial institution would retain the purposes only. PHYSIO

Matters with Ben Hutton of Brightside Physio

On forks and exercises

“I’d rather poke myself in the eyeball with a fork” Millie* 76, is a card-carrying straight shooter. She has a kind heart, a razor-sharp mind and it’s fair to say she doesn’t suffer fools. She’s fabulous, but her knees are dodgy. And with clear-eyed pragmatism she had decided that I was the physio to rescue her. I was in the middle of a long-winded description of an overly complicated exercise regime when Millie mercifully interrupted me to offer a piece of her wisdom: ”I’d rather poke…” I stopped and

reconsidered. I couldn’t just foist a group of exercises onto Millie without considering what her life was like and what she actually wanted to do, which happened to be spending several hours a day in her garden. I had even tried calling the exercises ‘LMS’ (Lifestyle Management Strategies) which earned a predictable snort of derision and a barely concealed eye-roll. So we went back to basics. Together we worked out a plan I thought might help and that didn’t irritate her dodgy knees. It took some time. After six weeks, Millie said it was only just starting to feel better. She gave me a hard look when I attempted a pep talk and asked me ‘HOW LONG!?’. I replied that I thought 3-6 months was the probable time frame and I hoped she would see some change as she got stronger. After three months she opened the Brightside door with a wide smile – ‘its working!!’ The test we’d used was the three back steps down to her garden and last week she said ‘it was a painfree glorious moment’ I said, ‘who would’ve thought…that physio actually works!’ with a sideways grin. Which gave her a chance to airily reply: ‘well, certainly not me but I have been pleasantly surprised that you might just know what you’re talking about’. I’ve got the best job in the world.
