MP calls for new schools
State Member for Wallsend, Ms Sonia Hornery MP, has called on the NSW Education Minister to build new schools in Newcastle’s western suburbs and end the overcrowding, after the latest data revealed that many local schools are exceeding capacity. New Department of Education data shows local schools are bursting at the seams, including Jesmond Public School which is at 125% capacity, New Lambton Public School which is at 118.5% capacity, Callaghan College Wallsend which is at 113% capacity and Lambton Public School which is at 109% capacity. Hard yards
I am a firm believer in the old adage that “When you ask a man to do something, he will get it done. There’s no need to remind him about it every six months.” In fact I’m living, breathing proof that it’s true. This is especially true in our house when it comes garden related tasks. I enjoy a tidy yard at least as much as the next person, I just don’t enjoy making it happen as much as others seem to. The tasks can include anything outdoors from the simple mowing and edging to the more complicated, labour intensive tasks like dismantling and relocating a garden shed. For the purposes of this exposition, I’ll call all matters relating to work in the back and front yards as ‘projects’. I have worked out, only recently mind you, that there is a project ‘pipeline’ or ‘clock’ at work here. Whether I realise it our not the clock is always ticking. The hands of the clock show a different time for each separate project depending on how long they have been projects. All projects can be categorised as either (a) not yet accepted by me as actually being projects, that is, non-existent; (b) only recently accepted by me as being projects, that is, not urgent (c) projects that I accept need doing quite soon, but still not urgent (d) projects I started but later forgot were projects I’d agreed to do soon. Once we have moved from category (a) through to category (d) there are two ways we can go. I might complete the project over budget with regard to both time and expense or we can outsource, agree we should have outsourced in the first place, and get the job done on time and at a reasonable cost.

150 year celebrations sure to excite senses
The creators of Five Senses Twilight Markets are bringing a special day time event to Lambton Park in late June Organisers of Lambton’s 150 years celebrations in June are more than confident the community will enjoy what is being planned. As well as co-ordinating a week long calendar of special events by community groups, schools and sports clubs, the Love Lambton 150 Committee has invited local event organisers A La Mode events to stage a birthday celebration event from 10am to 4pm on Sunday 27 June.
A La Mode Events and its founder Ali Cooke have produced the very popular Five Senses Twilight Markets that have been staged in Lambton Park over recent years. Ali told The Local that expressions of interest are now open for market and food and drink stalls. The event looks to be filling up fast. “This opportunity to be back in Lambton Park, the home of Five Senses Twilight Markets is great. We love it here! And there

Women of Note open rehearsal Hunter Women of Note Chorus is an a capella singing group specialising in 4-part harmonies in the barbershop style. A real performance art form, members can expect to be asked to perform, in costume and make-up, several times a year. It’s all part of the fun they have as a chorus. The singing, the friendships, working together to achieve a goal, and then putting it on the stage in front of a paying audience – it’s a rush they say. Previous singing experience is useful, but not essential. If you decide to join, you’ll be taken through a 6-week learning program that teaches a cappella singing in general but barbershop in particular. George Bell, Grocer
makes him weigh tea (weighty). Although not sidesplittingly funny, it’s a reminder that while we now purchase tea in mass produced robotically dispensed plastic wrapped packages, grocers like Bell bought commodities such as flour, sugar and tea in bulk then sold it to their customers by weighing out the requested quantity for each individual purchase. From about 1880 tea began to be distributed and sold in small packets of set weight. There were two reasons for the change. The weighing and packing of each purchase took considerable time, incurring great expense to every grocer doing even an ordinary trade. Pre-packaged tea also benefited the customer, preventing grocers making a bit of sly profit by wrapping the tea in extra heavy paper before weighing, or by adulterating it with other substances.
This month’s photograph of George Bell and Sons grocery store in Elder St Lambton was taken exactly 125 years ago in May 1896. It is not only a reminder of how our visual landscape has changed, but also how our way of life has changed, as seen in the two themes of Tea and Transport. A riddle published a century ago asks: Why is a grocer a heavy person? Because his business always

A new brick building for Bell’s grocery business was constructed in 1907 by George’s son, John Reavely Bell. The building is still in use today by Elder Street Practice. Not that George Bell would have practiced such deceits. He was held in high respect, as evidenced by the hundreds who attended his funeral in November 1887. A few weeks earlier while travelling in a horse and buggy near Sandgate Cemetery, the horse was startled and then bolted, capsizing the buggy. George suffered serious head injuries from which he never recovered and he died aged just 58. It is tempting to imagine travel by horse and cart as a serene and idyllic experience. In truth it was dangerous, and newspapers regularly reported on serious injuries and fatalities related to horse drawn transport. Although tragically, serious accidents still occur now on our roads today, travelling today is considerably safer than in the times of George Bell. Osteoporosis
Your bones are continually being rebuilt and strengthened in a process that involves calcium, vitamin D and some hormones (e.g. oestrogen).
Who is at risk of osteoporosis? Women have a higher risk of getting osteoporosis due to their smaller bone mass and the drop in their oestrogen levels after menopause. Some other risk factors for both men and women are: • low dietary calcium • low vitamin D – often related to low sun exposure (e.g. people who spend most of their time indoors, darkskinned people, people who always cover most of their body) • not enough physical activity • increasing age • low body weight • family history of osteoporosis • Caucasian or Asian race • smoking • drinking a lot of alcohol • some medicines (e.g. prednisolone, prednisone) • some medical conditions (e.g. some hormone disorders, rheumatoid arthritis, kidney disease). If you are over 50 and have had a bone fracture, you may be at risk of having more fractures. Ask your doctor about the cause of the fracture. To keep your bones and muscles strong, have a healthy diet that includes enough calcium-rich foods, spend time outside in the sun (for vitamin D) and do regular exercise. Strong bones and muscles can reduce your risk of falls and fractures.
Effects of osteoporosis As you get older, this rebuilding process slows down and the density and strength of your bones can decrease. This may eventually lead to osteoporosis. People with osteoporosis have a high risk of breaking a bone during a fall. A fracture is often the first sign of osteoporosis. Fractures occur most often in the bones of the spine (vertebrae), hip and wrist. Fractures of the vertebrae can lead to loss of height, and changes in posture and the shape of the spine. Hip fractures can lead to permanent disability and loss of independence. As we get older, our bones can become less dense (solid) and more fragile (weak). Bones can become so fragile that they fracture (crack or break) very easily. This fragile bone condition is called osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is most common in women after Common treatments menopause. Scoliosis
A healthy spine has three natural curves when viewed from the side. One in the neck, one in the middle back and one in the lower back. When viewed front on, the spine should be relatively straight. Scoliosis is the term used to describe sideways curvature in someone’s spine from the front on view. Scoliosis affects about 3% of the population, and is typically first noticed in children aged 10-15. Some signs of scoliosis include uneven hips and shoulders, however it can also be a painless issue that can go unnoticed in a general physical exam. A full
spinal X-ray along with a scoliosis specific physical assessment is the best way to diagnose it. Thanks to recent advances in radiology, children can have a full body X-ray but only receive a fraction of the radiation that was once used, these X-rays are also often bulk billed. There is no known way to prevent scoliosis from occurring but there are many things you can do to manage the condition and if addressed early, reduce the severity later in life. For example, bad posture and wearing heavy backpacks don’t necessarily cause scoliosis but they can contribute to any symptoms associated with scoliosis, therefore these habits should be kept to a minimum for a child living with scoliosis. Scoliosis is often genetically inherited so if a child is diagnosed with this condition it is likely that one of their parents also has scoliosis and is unaware, often parents have a history of back issues as well. Many people think that if they or their child is diagnosed with scoliosis they will require surgery, the reality is that it is highly unlikely surgery will be necessary. When detected early, developing scoliosis can be managed highly effectively. This is why it is important to have your child’s spine checked on a regular basis, especially during their early and adolescent years.

Happiness
How does this work out in daily life? In my experience, there are two factors that help bring such happiness and if you like, stave off depression. These are human interaction and meaningful activity. Human beings are mammals and thus, we are social creatures. We need other humans. When we are isolated, we struggle. People with depression often isolate themselves. I call it ‘going into the cave’. The cave is a place of helplessness, hopelessness and sometimes worthlessness. Part of happiness is taking time to look after our relationships, that special person, family, friends. ‘No man is an island’. We need other people in our lives in order to thrive. Even introverts need other people. But we also need to do something. We need meaningful
The Greek philosopher Aristotle asked, “What is the activity. With nothing meaningful to do, we struggle. chief purpose of human existence?” His own answer was ‘the pursuit of happiness’. Aristotle distinguished happiness from pleasure. While many people pursue wealth, power, fame, influence, titles and the acquisition of things, Aristotle argued, these are only pursued in the belief that they will lead us to happiness. I have seen many people in my Consulting Rooms who have achieved these ‘pleasures’ but are miserable in their lives. But for Aristotle, happiness is something deeper. An end in itself.
Life can seem pointless and boredom can set in very quickly. Boredom does not sit well with us. It can lead to depression and even to substance misuse. I see plenty of retired people with nothing to do who are struggling badly. Meaningful activity at every stage of life is essential. Both relationships and meaningful activity are two important keys that bring a deeper sense of happiness, far beyond anything that money or fame will do.

“No.” “Do I HAVE to?” “I’ll do it in a minute.” Maybe one of these three is on rapid-repeat and giving you an involuntary eyelid twitch over there. If you regularly escalate into exasperation/frustration and have started to think of your child as defiant, entitled and deadset hard work then consider this: We cannot demand co-operation from our children. What we can do is earn it. Chances are you have given a red hot go to demanding co-operation. We all have. It’s really hard. We ‘do’ and ‘do’ for the kids and we ‘give’ and ‘give’ to them and their reluctance to swiftly co-operate when we
ask can put a bushfire through our nervous system and flip us into parenting in ways that don’t help, and which we later feel shamed about. If you are doing so much for your youngsters that you regularly feel ‘fed up’, then stay mindful that resentment is always an alert that there is a boundary needing an adjustment. Doing less ‘for’ them will free you up to do more ‘with’ them. If you would like me to, I can help you transition to doing less and to build in the long game evidence-based practices of Special Time, Emotion Coaching and guiding them using limits rather than all the lecturing, punishments, bribes, and the threats etc that have been depleting the heck out of your and their relationship. Endearment occurs then. And when they feel better in relationship with us then they increas-ingly want to follow our lead because they trust us as a predictable tuned-in leader. Patience* told me later that she was feeling sick in her stomach walking into my physio rooms. Mostly worried about the future. And whether I was someone who could help. And the pain —unremitting this morning, a knee that felt like ‘glass’ or a ‘chair with one leg missing’. Her sense of humour still intact she said: “I’d like a new leg please - preferably an Elle Macpherson if you’ve got one.” “Haha. Well I don’t have an Elle but I’ve got a second hand Anna Kournikova out the back.” I replied. Patience had a rough time at the last physio. Xray - led to a diagnosis of ‘terrible-very-bad-no-good arthritis’
which led to being prescribed three sets of 20 squats and a cup of concrete to harden up, plus treated with some weird machine that had lights that flashed and went ‘bing’ when it finished. A bit like a microwave. She’d left feeling discouraged and demotivated and her pain worse than when she started. She wanted to be pain free and to get back to her girl squad fitness classes and maybe even wear heels to a wedding in two months. My job was simple: Reduce pain, plus start her muscles working, plus give her hope. My straight talking explanation meant she knew up front it wouldn’t be quick, but if she worked hard she could get back to her fitness classes within three months.
March 17 @ 12pm. Brightside Physio Patience shows off. She does the talk-to-the-toddler squat without pain and tells me about her 45 minute outdoor exercise class on Monday, done with some stiffness but no pain and how much she realised she had missed her mates and coffee gas bagging. And, more importantly for her, was the feeling (with slight chinquiver) that she could see a life not clouded by constant pain. She felt like herself again. I’ve got the best job in the world. If you are considering moving in with or marrying your partner, or even if you have been together for a period, it may be wise to think about protecting your assets in the event of a separation. This may be particularly important where: • You have acquired assets prior to the relationship that you wish to keep, possibly for children of a prior relationship; • You have an interest in a business, family trust or company; • You expect to receive a substantial inheritance in the future; or • You have received a large sum of money as a gift, for example from your parents for a house deposit. You can protect these interests by entering into a binding financial agreement (BFA) with your partner. A BFA can prevent uncertainty and litigation by specifying how property will be divided. It is not too late if you have already moved in together or are married. A BFA may be entered into before, during or even after a marriage or relationship has ended. Note that a BFA entered into whilst in a de facto relationship ends automatically upon marriage. For a BFA to be enforceable it must comply with strict requirements in the Family Law Act. Each party must receive their own independent legal advice and enter the BFA of their own free will. Also, each party must fully disclose all assets and liabilities including property, savings, shares, insurance policies and superannuation. If you think a BFA might suit your circumstances, discuss this with your partner and seek legal advice. To amputate or not to amputate
Minerva is a 14-month-old rescue kitten belonging to good friends of New Lambton Veterinary Clinic. We first met her as a 14-week-old kitten when she was still losing her baby teeth, and we really looked forward to her next kitten visits for worming, vaccination and desexing at 6 months of age. After that, being a placid inside cat, we didn’t expect to hear from her again until next year’s check-up was due. However, about a month ago, her owner Lani heard a
big crash in the middle of the night. She had managed to climb up on to a stack of suitcases in the spare room and pull them down on herself! By the time we saw her the next morning she was not bearing weight on one of her hind limbs and unfortunately X-rays showed that she had fractured her tibia, or shin bone. The fracture was undisplaced – that is, the bone had not moved, just cracked (it actually wasn’t fully fractured), so we elected to put a cast on it and keep her very quiet for 3-4 weeks in the hope that it would heal. Alas, it was not to be! Keeping Minnie quiet enough to heal proved impossible and at X-ray 2 weeks later the bone had fully fractured and surgery was required to fix it. Cat’s bones are very fragile and the fracture was what we would call very distal on the limb – there was only a small fragment of bone down near her ankle on which to screw the tiny bone plate. Added to that, sweet though she is, Minnie had shown herself to be not the best patient to keep confined! A heart wrenching decision for her owners was made to amputate the leg. Though confronting, for her it was a far better option than the risk of a surgical procedure getting infected or screws coming loose in a kitten that couldn’t keep still. I removed her stitches today – she was pain free and mobile, and clearly unphased by her new nickname “Tripod”!
