Tower of trouble

A proposal by Telstra to install a 26 metre high telecommunications pole in the midst of New Lambton’s shopping area has met with strong and sustained opposition from the local community.

The installation, known as a monopole, is designed to improve and enhance mobile telephone coverage in the area.

When the development application was originally lodged with City of Newcastle, earlier this year, a tower of almost 32 metres height was proposed.

This was met with close to 300 submissions from community members and business owners. Knock it off

Over recent months there has been a spate of doorknocking going on in my neighbourhood.

It’s not the “Can I sell you something?” type of door knocker. It’s not the “Would you be so kind as to donate?” door knocker. Nor is it a “Would you like to hear all about my God?” door knocker. And it’s definitely not one of those cute and costumed “Trick or Treat?” door knockers.

This door knocker is a man of early middle age with long hair, tied back and a script as well-developed as any of the legitimate door knocker categories mentioned above but without the photo ID. When you answer your door the man tells you the story of how he has lost his Opal Card (or has no credit on his Opal Card), his phone is out of action (or has no credit) and he needs you to call his sister (or another family member) so she/they can pick him up. If this plea doesn’t persuade you he may also ask directly for some money. If you refuse he leaves. Well he did for me anyway.

According to the posts I’ve read on local community Facebook pages he’s offered this same story, or other variations of it, many perhaps dozens of times around the neighbourhood. More than once at some addresses.

Given the repetition of his spiel there can be little truth to the predicament he would have you believe he is in.

I’m not doubting for a moment that this gentleman is in need of a helping hand. If he happens to knock on our door again I hope to find the composure to offer him something from our pantry or fruit bowl. I will also try to suggest some local charities that could help him. The first time he visited me I listened to his story and gave him a firm but polite “ Sorry. No.” before closing the door.

Telstra’s troubled monopole

(continued from front page) For the most part these submissions argued that the tower would dominate the streetscape of Regent Street.

They argued that Telstra should be asked by Council to investigate upgrading the existing infrastructure on the Telstra Exchange building or find another, less prominent site for the tower.

A public voice session was held in June in which local community members and the proponents put their respective cases directly to City of Newcastle councillors. At this session Telstra’s contractor for the proposed installation, Kordia, was asked to investigate other potential sites for the installation.

In a resubmitted application the

only alteration was to reduce the tower’s height from 31.8 to 26.3 metres. This resulted in another 150 community submissions.

Tanya Montgomery, a resident of Russell Road and one of a number of community members that have rallied the support of the neighbourhood spoke to The Local.

“It totally contradicts other initiatives that Council are implementing in our suburb, such as the redevelopment of the Blackbutt shopping village, to have the Tesltra monolith stuck in the middle of Regent Street.” Ms Montgomery said.

“We’re not against 5G. We know that demand for mobile and internet services is only increasing and that ongoing infrastructure

upgrades need to happen. We just question why it needs to be in the middle of our village shopping area. Surely there are better locations.” She added.

“Council has previously approved the construction of a tower by Optus in bushland near Queens Road and Mahogany Drive. Why can’t Telstra join with Optus and use this facility when built?”

Whilst the short timeframe for community comment on the amended development application expired in October, it is understood that City of Newcastle will accept late submissions.

President of the Lambton-New Lambton RSL Sub Branch, Mr Warwick Budden has advised that, regretfully, the annual Remembrance Day Service will not be held this year due to current Covid-19 restrictions on public gatherings.

He went on to say that this was

especially disappointing as the event, held on the 11 November each year, was for participation by the Lambton and New Lambton communities and arrangements were being made this year for it to be conducted by the outgoing School Captains of Lambton High School.

Mr Budden urged all members of the public, and especially our local schools, to take a short break at 11 am on 11 November, to observe a minutes silence to honour all those Australian men and women who had served and paid the ultimate sacrifice in past conflicts.

Council libraries support those living

Newcastle Libraries has launched a new program tailored to assist people living with dementia, their families and carers, designed to foster conversation and connection.

The Memory Room uses images and items from the Local History collection to evoke memories and encourage participants to share stories and laughter.

Material and resources are now available to view online and download for free at home, while one-hour, face-to-face sessions facilitated by certified local art therapist, Alice Ropata, will be offered fortnightly.

According to a 2019 Dementia Australia survey of more than 5,700 participants, including people living with dementia, their families, carers, health and aged care professionals, 96% of respondents believe people do not know what to say to their friend or relative who lives with dementia. A further 74% of people living with dementia say others have not kept in touch as much as they used to.

Lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes said Newcastle Libraries provided inclusive spaces for the young and old to gather and share stories.

“A single photograph can elicit powerful memories that allow us to open up with loved ones and share stories of our past. The Memory Room encourages discussion in a friendly and supportive environment, helping to strengthen and maintain a sense of connection with others.”Ms Gately said.

Participants and their carers can book Memory Room sessions online via the Newcastle Libraries website.

Other library resources can be accessed through the website to borrow, as well as Dementia Australia-led webinars on a range of topics.

A picnic homecoming

This month’s photograph, taken at the border between Lambton and New Lambton looking along Howe Street invites the question “Why is a large group of well-dressed adults and children walking along the tram track towards Lambton?” The answer turns out to be related to transport, but not to trams.

When Lambton Colliery began in 1863 a railway was built to haul coal to the harbour. Roads into Newcastle were in a very poor state and a trip to town was a major undertaking. An appealing alternative was to travel by train. For a few years the colliery allowed passengers in the guards’ van of their coal trains at a cost of 6 shillings per trip. Tiring of this arrangement, they doubled the price in 1866, then ceased the service in 1867.

Residents agitated for the return of a passenger train service, and in 1874 the Waratah Coal Company gave permission for the Government to run a passenger train to Lambton on the railway to their new coal workings.

This train operated on Saturdays and public holidays only, with pick-up and set-down at Betty Bunn’s crossing, located at the bottom end of Acacia Avenue where it meets Griffiths Road. The service ceased in 1887 when the tramline through Lambton began operation.

Afterwards the Lambton Colliery railway was occasionally used to convey passengers to special events. One example was the Lambton Public School annual picnic day on Wednesday 25 February 1903. At 9am a train of seven cars left Lambton colliery with 500 children and 400 adults on board and headed for Toronto. On arrival there were refreshments, sports competitions, musical entertainments, and Ralph Snowball was on hand to take group photographs.

At day’s end the picnickers returned by train to Lambton and disembarked near the bridge over the tram line. In the fading light of a summer’s evening as they headed for their homes, Snowball took a final photograph, capturing one of the last occasions a passenger train arrived at Lambton.

The Moonlight Dreamers by Siobhan Curham

The Moonlight Dreamers books are about a small group of people who are struggling with their families. They then meet each other and create a club where they help each other follow their passions. They are all different except that they always get told how to live their lives.

Siobhan Curham wrote these books six years ago in 2014 and created this series to inspire people to find their place in the world and to know that we can follow our dreams if we set our minds to it.

In the books there are many quotes like “Yes, I am a dreamer. For a moonlight dreamer is one who can only find their way by moonlight, and their punishment is that they can see the dawn before the rest of the world.”

These many quotes throughout the book made me think about what our world would be like if we helped each other rather than pushed each other further away. If we support each other then we will feel like we are able to make up our own minds and live the life that we want.

I would recommend this book to all the young adult readers in the world, so they can be inspired just like I was.

Do you have assets you wish to protect if your second relationship breaks down? This is common and particularly important when you want to protect the financial interests in your estate of the children of your first relationship.

If so, you should consider making a Binding Financial Agreement (BFA) to deal with the division of your assets. This agreement may be entered into before or after you marry or start living together or even after you separate.

Without a BFA, in the event of a second separation your assets will simply form part of the asset pool to be divided with your partner.

In the event of your death, a BFA may help your children avoid an expensive and time-consuming estate dispute, which are increasingly common in the blended family context. If the children of a first relationship are adults, they can also be parties to the BFA. A BFA can also ease any concerns your children have about your second partner having one eye on your estate and improve their relationship.

To ensure that it is enforceable, each party to the BFA must receive independent legal advice. The negotiation of the BFA should be fair and all assets must be disclosed. Those assets include any property, shares, life insurance and superannuation.

The BFA may deal with any expected inheritances. It should also address how any assets acquired during the relationship will be split.

A BFA can save you or your estate a great deal of heartache and money. It is like an insurance policy except you only pay for it once.

Pre-anaesthetic blood work

If your pet needs to have an anaesthetic for any reason we always suggest pre-anaesthetic bloodwork first.

This does add to the cost of the procedure, but it’s simple, quick and non invasive, and the test is run in our own laboratory on site.

Often times, the results come back perfectly normal, but this is not time wasted. We have a snapshot in time of your pet’s liver function, kidney function, glucose metabolism and haematology. If your pet got

sick in the future we would know what is normal for her, in the same way that we measure weight, heart rate and temperature each time we see her.

Sometimes there is an unwelcome surprise for us. A recent example is with Beau, a gorgeous Maltese x Shihtzu who comes in to see us regularly for a clip.

He’s 11 years old now and can be a little bit grumpy at times but we all love him to bits! Last week he got very lame in one of his hind legs. He needed some dental work so we decided to give him a quick anaesthetic to X-ray the leg and clean his teeth.

The results were back with us within ten minutes. He was very anaemic with no bone marrow response to supply new red blood cells. He would not go under anaesthetic today! Instead we turned to the ultrasound machine and found a large mass in his abdomen.

We suspect that the mass was bleeding and causing the anaemia. Beau needed a blood transfusion before surgery to remove the mass. Kylo, Jacqui’s wolfhound cross, bravely stepped forward as a donor.

Fast forward a week, with abdominal mass removed, he is a new dog again! His leg is better, and he was so happy to re-unite with his owner Clive after a couple of days of intensive care. Without the pre-anaesthetic screen he could well not have made it through!

2020 - What a year

No-one could have anticipated it. Who could have known? That this year, the beginning of the 2020s, would turn out to be so challenging?

Last summer never really settled down. Bushfires were starting at the end of Winter, in August. And out of control bushfires began in Spring, in September.

Thirty-three people lost their lives. Untold damage occurred to property and livestock. Australia had never seen anything like it in its intensity and breadth of destruction. A nightmare scenario.

In February, we thought the rain was welcome, but then it didn’t stop. The nation went into flood mode.

Sweeping areas of the east coast were flooded with great damage again to property and livelihoods.

Disbelief!

On 25 January, Australia got its first case of the novel coronavirus, Covid19. From that time, Australia has been on high alert, closing external and internal borders, using lockdown restrictions and personal hygiene and physical distancing regimes to try to stay ahead of this virus. Overseas, we have seen how contagious it is and how quickly it can spread if it gets away from us. There is no down-playing this. It is a killer virus, and it effects people with significant post-viral illnesses. We have lived through two waves of this global pandemic. At the time of writing, we have lost 900 loved ones, and over 27,000 people have become infected and battled this thing. And we’re still not out of the woods yet.

I remember Queen Elizabeth saying, “1992 is not a year on which I shall look back with undiluted pleasure” and calling it an “annus horribilis”. I think we can we all reply, “And so say of all of us” about 2020. It has brought us together in some ways, made us rethink the value of health and connection, and probably, some reprioritisation about what’s important. But in truth, as we head toward the finish line, most of us will be pretty happy to see the back end of this one.

Doggy facial folds

Many breeds of dogs have facial folds, where excessive skin wrinkles and folds give the dog that smooshie look. Facial folds are common in brachycephalic breeds like Pekingese, Pugs, Bulldogs, Frenchies, Boxers, Mastiffs and Shar Pei. These breeds need a little more TLC to help keep the skin clean and healthy and not smelly.

Whilst the folds add character and expression, dirt, debris, food and moisture collects in the folds. To keep your dog in optimal health, they do require lots of cleaning to prevent odour and skin disease. To prevent the skin folds from irritation, redness, odour and problems with yeast and bacteria forming in the

folds, canine facial cleaning is necessary and should be a regular routine. A good pattern of daily wiping will help eliminate any problems and keep your dog happy and healthy.

One indicator that problems are beginning is if the face has an unpleasant smell. Sometimes dogs will rub their faces on the carpet or furniture items and this can lead to abrasions and cuts. Some folds are very deep and often develop dermatitis if left and not thoroughly cleaned and the folds dried. Drying the folds to remove any moisture is key to help prevent bacteria forming. Depending on the depth of the folds the cleaning may be required more frequently.

The majority of breeds of dogs with wrinkles are short haired, so people often think of them as low maintenance. In fact these breeds require regular bathing in the correct shampoos and must be thoroughly dried leaving absolutely no moisture on the skin and the folds cleaned properly and cleaned without causing abrasions.

Depression

Depression is much more than feeling in a low mood after a sad or stressful event. Depression is a serious mental and physical condition that changes how a person thinks, feels and behaves. People with depression need professional help and sometimes medicines to get better. Depression is very common.

Signs and symptoms

Depression can affect thoughts, feelings, mood, behaviour and physical health. Some common symptoms are: • loss of interest and enjoyment in life • thinking and feeling sad, hopeless, helpless, worthless, in despair • feeling irritable, anxious, moody, angry • problems sleeping or sleeping too much • appetite and weight changes • feeling tired, low energy levels • trouble thinking, concentrating and making decisions • thinking of suicide • problems with sex or less interest in sex • headaches, body aches and pains • drinking more alcohol (or using more drugs).

If you have had any of these symptoms for more than two weeks, talk to your doctor. If you are a parent, watch out for these symptoms in your teenagers.

Treatment

There are several different types of therapy for depression.

Successful treatment often involves using more than one of these.

Talking and support

Talking is often the first step in managing depression.

Counselling and other psychological therapies such as cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) are important treatments.

These therapies can help you change unhelpful patterns of thinking and acting. Local doctors, psychiatrists, psychologists and some counsellors can help with these therapies.

Self care

• Learn about depression and its treatment.

• Ask for help. Depression is a medical condition, not a weakness.

• Let family and friends know how you are feeling. They may not fully understand what you’re going through, but they may be able to give you extra support.

• Some people find it helpful to write down their thoughts and feelings.

• Learn and use relaxation techniques to relax your body and mind.

• Have a healthy diet. Eat a variety of vegetables, fruits, wholegrain/wholemeal foods, protein-rich foods (e.g. nuts, lean meats, fish, eggs, beans) and low-fat dairy foods every day. Limit foods high in fat, sugar or salt.

• Try to do some physical exercise every day, even if it’s just going for a walk. Gradually increase your level of activity.

• Don’t smoke. Nicotine can make anxiety worse.

• Limit alcohol to no more than two standard drinks per day.

Alcohol (and other drugs) can make depression worse.

• Limit caffeine (e.g. tea, coffee, cola, energy drinks). • Look after yourself. Do some things that you enjoy.

Getting help

There are many organisations that provide help and support for people with depression and for their families and friends.

Ask a doctor or Pharmacist for contact information of these organisations.
