Bus for Beaudean

Issue No 67• A community newspaper for Newcastle’s suburbs • November 2019

Beaudean Holl is a happy 25 year old man doing his very best to lead an active, fulfilling life. When you meet him you understand how his big beaming smile, his kindness and his happy nature are contagious. Beaudean, who lives in supported accomodation in Mayfield, was born with Angelman syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that affects the nervous system and causes severe developmental delay and intellectual disability. As he has grown into a tall, strong young man his father’s vehicle has become unsuitable and he is in desperate need of a new transport option. With increasing pressure on the disability budget, Beaudean’s NDIS funding does not include transport to and from his appointments and daily activities. Beaudean’s day program is important in maintaining a fulfilling and interesting life, including his ability to socialise with peers. “A wheelchair accessible bus would make Beaudean’s life so much easier and give him so many more opportunities to be able to get out in the community with his carers” Beaudean’s father Glenn told The Local. Enjoy your sandwich

The term ‘sandwich generation’ was coined late last century to describe people, usually in the age range of late 30s to early 60s, who are raising their own children whilst also caring for a parent. I seem to have heard the phrase used a fair bit lately. Perhaps that’s because, to some extent I identify with the label. Now, I’m no demographer but to my mind there are three aspects to modern life that come together to make the sandwich. Firstly, as a population we are living longer. Secondly, we are choosing to have children later. And thirdly, those aforementioned children are, either through financial imperative or just clever thinking, staying at home longer than the kids of yore. You don’t need to reflect for long on these three factors to realise just how lucky we are to be here today and not a mere handful of generations ago. We have choices that our Great Great Greats did not. We can delay having a family knowing there’s time still. We can have kids early in life if that suits us. We can even choose not to have a family at all. We can study, study some more, then get a career happening, then break for kids later. Our forebears often didn’t have these choices. When all is said and done having your parents and your children in your life is immeasurably better than the alternative. I’m enjoying my sandwich. I hope you are too.

Furry friends flock to fenced park They say every dog has its day, and that is certainly the case for local pooches who can now roam free in the city’s first fenced dog park. The new facility at Acacia Avenue Reserve, North Lambton was officially opened recently with creatures great and small converging on the park to celebrate. Deputy Lord Mayor Declan Clausen said the unveiling of the dog park is fantastic for our dogloving city and is the culmination of more than 1,000 submissions by the community. “After a strong response to the development of our Dogs in Open Space Plan, it was clear that catering for our four-legged friends is extremely important to our city,” he said. “Delivering a fenced off-leash area came through as one of the major pieces of feedback and we’ve worked since then on identifying the best location in consultation with the community. “The community’s input has been reflected in the unique way the park has been constructed with special areas for both large and small dogs to play in comfort. I’m thrilled with this space and know it will be a vibrant and popular place for people and their pets to be active and play outside.”

Deputy Lord Mayor Declan Clausen officially opened City of Newcastle’s first fenced dog park at Acacia Avenue North Lambton joined by dogs and their owners last month Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the new park was a premier facility for dog owners wanting their pets to enjoy time off-leash and socialising in a contained environment. “The dog park is encircled by a 1.5 metre-high chain-mesh fence and contains 452 metres of accessible pathway throughout,” the Lord Mayor said. “The park is equipped with two shelters and tables, two dog bubblers and dog dispenser bags, ensuring comfort for dogs and their owners. “A unique and popular feature of

the park is the dedicated areas for small and large dogs to enjoy. The 1.5 hectare fenced area is the ultimate space for pet owners to bring their dogs without the worry of them wandering off into traffic.” Councillor Clausen added. The City of Newcastle has one of the highest rates of dog ownership in the State with more than 44,300 registered dogs calling the city home. City of Newcastle rangers were on hand at the opening event to provide dog care packs and information on responsible dog ownership.

The D Majors are excited to announce a black tie fundraiser on Saturday 30 November at Souths Newcastle that will benefit ovarian cancer research at the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI). While The D Majors started out as a breast cancer choir, they now welcome all women who have experience with all kinds of cancers. The event is being held in conjunction with the group “Pink Meets Teal” to honour Jill Emberson, a dear friend of The D Majors, who is living with ovarian cancer and continues to advocate strongly for greater awareness and funding. ABC Newcastle’s Dan Cox is hosting the event, and the fabulous Terence Koo Trio will join the D Majors in entertaining, with special guest vocalist Isabella McGavin. Guest speaker will be HMRI researcher Associate Professor Pradeep Tanwar. Tickets are $140 each, or $1300 for a table of ten which includes dinner, drinks and great entertainment. Tickets are available online through Souths. The evening will include raffles and an auction to raise funds for local research. Ovarian cancer is one of the deadliest and most under-funded cancers. Each year in Australia, 1600 women will be diagnosed and 1000 will die. The survival rate five years after diagnosis is just 45% and there is no early detection test.

Hunter Women Artists return to cstudios Gallery, at 738 Hunter Street West, Newcastle exhibition titled: Connections. The exhibition opens 4pm Saturday 9 November and closes 23 November. Nine Hunter Women Artists will exhibit new contemporary works with a lively and colourful interpretation of the theme ‘Connections’. Each artist brings colour and energy to their work, with some showing symbolism, distortion and new spatial and visual boundaries. Jackie Maundrell-Hall has captured light and shadows of the Newcastle shoreline in her “Canoe Pool”. Leigh Dennis was drawn to the reflections on the shores of Lake Macquarie. Jill Campbell returns to her strong connection with the bushland near her home. Annie Palmer has incorporated her love of trees using collage. Christine Finch used gel prints and abstract patterns incorporating energy and movement in her works. Jenni Gander continues with her free flowing abstract designs. Cheryl Barrett has brightly coloured landscapes and moody oceans. Pam Carroll found a connection to magpies in her own backyard and Sharon O’Hearn’s paintings flow with her distinctive designs of central Australia.

Letters to

A response to Alexa’s letter to PM Re your open letter to our Prime Minister in the October issue of The Local, you state that all new coal, oil and gas mining projects should be denied in the future. You should consider the fact that these mining industries produce steel, copper, nickel, glass and composite plastics. These materials are used in the manufacture of the following: mobile phones, motor cars, roads and bridges, computers, air conditioning, refrigerators,

washing machines, steel frame buildings, schools and universities, windows, water and sewerage plumbing, power cables, glasses and sunglasses, aeroplanes etc, etc. Which of the above will you do without in the future to save our world? Do you still want to ban all forms of mining? You also state your preference for renewable energy. Where do you think the materials come from to

build wind farms, solar panels, hydroelectric power stations, power lines, power poles and towers come from? Again from mining. Do you still want to ban all forms of mining? Are you listening? Are you thinking? Raymond Parkes Condor Circuit, Lambton

THAT WAS THEN This is now

James Gray,Undertaker

Gray was one of the early proponents for the establishment of Adamstown Council in 1885. His desire to serve as an alderman was a model of perseverance, with multiple unsuccessful attempts to be elected. Conceding defeat on the fourth occasion in 1894 he was undaunted, stating that he “would again make an effort to get in to the council.” The following year he finally gained a place when elected to fill a casual vacancy. He went on to serve as an alderman for 15 years and was elected Mayor on three occasions.

James Gray of Adamstown, was a leading businessman, citizen, and alderman who died on 30 May 1916 while holidaying in Blackheath, just a few days before his 73rd birthday. Gray arrived in Australia from the north of England around 1878, and lived in Brunker Rd Hamilton West (now Broadmeadow) working as an undertaker. In 1885 he moved to Adamstown, and while continuing as an undertaker he also worked as a carpenter, ran a hardware and furniture shop and accumulated a substantial property portfolio. Above: a close up taken from the photo on facing page with what appears to be a reflection in the windshield of a woman in a hat. Is it ghostly apparition, an accidental double exposure or a clever piece of photographic artistry by Ralph Snowball?

Ralph Snowball’s photograph of 8 December 1910 shows James Gray in front of his business premises in Glebe Rd. Dressed in black, standing with his hand on the wheel of his Beeston Humber motor car, Gray is at work as an undertaker for the funeral of Jane Gilpin. Her son Edward is presumably the man standing at the front of the car. This is one of Snowball’s finest, carefully composed photographs, and in the dead centre is a very curious detail. In the glass windshield beside the reflection of Edward Gilpin, there is a slightly blurred image of a woman in a hat. But there is no woman standing next to Gilpin. Is this a ghostly apparition? Is it an accidental double exposure? Or are we witnessing a clever piece of photographic artistry performed by Snowball, paying homage to Edward Gilpin’s beloved mother? You can view these photos and more details at www. lachlanwetherall.com

49 years o

When Chris and Shirley Piggott commenced at Piggott’s Pharmacy Blackbutt in November 1970, Pharmacists were regularly making or compounding medicine in the form of mixtures, liniments, creams, ointments, powders, and to a lesser extent suppositories or pessaries. Tablets, capsules and manufactured products were in their infancy. For 49 years Piggott’s Pharmacy have been at the forefront of Pharmacy. While the medicine has changed greatly in this time, Pharmacists continue to provide personal care and advice; freely given and without the need for an appointment. Earlier this year Piggott’s Pharmacy continued on their quest of innovation with community pharmacy by introducing the EasyPack system. While taking one prescription daily might not be an issue, taking a dozen pills is more complicated. Some are taken once a day, others twice or more a day. Some with food, others on an empty

stomach. Some can be taken together, others cannot. Remembering such a routine once can be challenging in itself, let alone sticking to it day after day. Did you remember to take all your medication today? Piggott’s Pharmacy solve this by providing an innovative service, instead of selling each prescription medication individually, pills are sorted together into clear plastic wrappers printed with the date and time at which the dose should be taken. The Pharmacist is still available discuss your personal needs, requirements and to take the time to explain all your medication. PIGGOTT’S PHARMACY’S NEW MEDICINE SACHET SYSTEM – THE EASYPACK! The Piggott’s EasyPack has been improving the medication routine of customers for more than 6 months. In store at your local Piggott’s Pharmacy, it has proven to be an excellent way to easily manage medicines and to ensure each customer

Many inspiring quotes match the pictures, such as, “The richness I achieve from nature, is the source of my inspiration.” Claude Monet. The book contains many pictorial hidden gems of our nation, from the lush Queensland rainforests, to penguins in freezing Antarctic wonderlands, from towering Victorian snow gums, to the awesome Tasmanian wilderness, then to the heritage-steeped shores of Norfolk Island. Some of these stunning images, are now also featured in vertical panorama for the first time: soaring cliffs and standalone lighthouses, the thundering strength of waterfalls, the amazing wave rock in Western Australia. Offering a view of our magnificent country that is truly breathtaking. This makes you appreciate the land we live in, and gives a momentum to go, explore these new, different, and great places. “At a time when there is so much fear and negativity in the world: we need as much inspiration and as we can get.” Ken Ducan. My sentiments exactly: take a peak inside this edition and you definitely won’t be disappointed. Enjoy! My favorite picture is the one of Moroka Hut, in the Alpine National Park, Vic. (p47). FITNESS Matters with Ali & Dan Marshall of Corefit Newcastle

Stress and weight gain

Have you ever eaten well, exercised consistently, and consumed plenty of water only to see no changes in your body? Have you wondered why, despite your best efforts, you find your pants getting tighter and you’re getting more and more tired. Look back on those times. Maybe you’re experiencing it now. What has been your stress level in those times?

exercise - nutrition - mindset

You see, your body knows prolonged stress as your ancestors used to experience it. It meant prolonged periods without food. Your body is programmed to see long-term stress as a threat to your survival, so it tells your body to do two things: store energy and increase hunger. This is why we gain weight in stressful times, even despite solid food and exercise efforts. So, what can we do about it? Here are a few options you could look into to manage your stress: • Journaling • Meditation • Breath work or yoga • Seek support from a coach or counsellor • Exercise, if your not already Managing stress is very challenging in the world today, but it is essential for our long-term health and loving the body you have now. Research shows stress as the underlying cause of many diseases, so not keeping your stress in check simply isn’t an option. We’d love to help you relieve your stress here at CoreFit! VET Chat

by Dr Fiona Wallace of New Lambton Veterinary Clinic

A case study – Lilly, 10 yo, domestic short hair cat Cats and their appetites are difficult even when they are 100% healthy, let alone when they are sick! Lilly (not her real name) is a ten year old moggy who came to see us a few months ago because she had slowly lost weight – a worrying 700g over several months. We asked her worried owners about her appetite (still good, though recently fussy about dry food) and whether she had started to drink and use the kitty litter more than usual (perhaps she had developed diabetes, or maybe her kidneys were starting to struggle?). To her owners Lilly had done nothing unusual – except to have lost weight. She had no diarrhoea or

vomiting and was drinking normally. So we started further narrowing down the options…if she was eating enough she could only lose weight if (a) if she was losing nutrition somehow (eg in diabetes when glucose is lost in the urine) (b) if food is not being absorbed properly (a damaged intestine, which most often causes diarrhoea), (d) if the absorbed food is not being utilised properly –eg hyperthyroidism, which speeds the metabolism up and is quite common in older cats. But full blood and urine evaluation ruled out diabetes and hyperthyroidism. Even though she had no diarrhoea it must be either primary gastrointestinal disease – or – hang on, her teeth were looking in very poor shape – perhaps she had gone off the dry food and her calorie intake had dropped because her mouth was sore? We booked her in for dental and found after X-rays that there was a great deal to fix and extract. We sent her home a much happier cat and she did start to eat better and put on a little weight – but only temporarily. When she started to lose weight again we recommended an abdominal ultrasound to check on things like the size of her abdominal lymph nodes, the thickness of her intestinal wall, whether liver or spleen or any other organs were involved. Watch this column next month to see what happened with Lilly.

GUT HEALTH

Matters with Sara Knight of The Gut Clinic

HAVE YOU GOT THE GUT TO BE HEALTHY?

Cold sores

As the weather starts to warm and we head outside into the sun and wind, some of you may be experiencing cold sores again. Those painful and unsightly blisters are a far from ideal part of warmer weather. Cold sores or fever blisters result from a virus (herpes simplex 1) which might explain why they are also so common when we are run down or stressed. Our immune system is not as strong when we are feeling pressured and tired allowing the virus to make its sneaky way to the skin surface. Knowing your triggers is a key part of being able to prevent cold sores. Common triggers include the weather, stress, food, hormones and lack of self-care. But each person has unique triggers so finding yours is important to prevent a breakout.

● IBS ● SIBO ● Intolerance Testing

Despite our best efforts, we may suffer from a breakout here and there. It is important to then understand the five stages of the cold sore so you can treat it properly and prevent sharing it with others. The five stages are: The Tingle – the under skin tingle if not itch is a key sign a cold sore is about to erupt. Blister – the fluid-filled blister surfaces causing pain, redness and more itching.

Page 22 > The Local > November 2019

Weeping – being highly contagious, the blister may pop and other blisters may surface. Scab – as the blister dries, a scab forms a sure sign that the healing is well underway. Healing - the skin under the scab still needs to heal and strengthen to prevent scarring. Once you know and understand each of the five stages and what to do, treatment becomes pretty straightforward, easily managed with whole foods, key nutrients available from good health food stores and rest. However, reoccurring cold sores are a sure sign that targeted help is needed to better understand the triggers, increase stress resilience and boost a clearly struggling immune system.

The good and bad of pet bowls

What type of bowl does your pet have? There are lots of different styles and designs of bowls on the market. What are the best and safest bowls for your pet? The number one choice of bowls for cats and dogs is stainless steel as they are the most hygienic. They are easy to clean and do not interact with food or water. They are durable and non-allergenic. Some have a rubber moulding on the base, to prevent them skidding across the floor whilst the dog is eating. Many of the ceramic and pottery style bowls are manufactured overseas and are often poorly glazed. These bowls can leach out heavy metals and dangerous bacteria from the

PET

clay beneath, especially if they have crazy cracking or are chipped, this can harbour mould. They can easily break and chip and make better pot plant bases than pet bowls. Most moulded plastic pet bowls are manufactured with chemicals, dyes and deodorisers. They are not really suited to use for pets, due to the risk of chemicals leaching out into their food or water and then the pet ingesting. Some dogs chew their plastic bowls, this can lead to bacteria been harboured in the chewed areas. Some plastics absorb odours, this is often the reason the pet chew them. Many dogs have allergies to plastics and can even develop acne on the chin and face from using plastic bowls. Allergic contact dermatitis is common in dogs from plastic bowls. Make sure to give your dog bowls that are suitable for the size of the dog and their food and water requirements. Some dogs with long pendulous ears need special shaped bowls to prevent their ears and hair from going into their bowls and getting food stuff in them or wet hair from drinking. Some pets need to have their bowls elevated. To help pets that are old or have arthritis, joint disorders, hip, shoulder or neck problems, elevating their bowls can be beneficial as it will lessens the strain especially on their neck. For some breeds of dogs having an elevated bowl can be detrimental to their health, research has proven that bloat may occur if the dogs bowl is elevated. Some breeds like Great Danes and Standard poodles that are prone to bloat should have their bowl on the floor.

AGE Matters with Joseph McCarthy CEO of NovaCare Community Services

Old People’s Home For 4 Year Olds

Did you get a chance to watch Old People’s Home For 4 Year Olds on the ABC? The show was premised as a unique social experiment that brings together elderly people in a retirement community with a group of four year olds. Could this encounter between young and old help transform the lives of the elderly? From my perspective, one of the show’s biggest benefits was to provide some much needed positivity on aged care services to the general public. At the start of the program, many of the older people

Page 24 > The Local > November 2019

involved in the show identified as feeling isolated and depressed as a result of things like boredom and loss of independence. This issue is quite significant when it is expected, that by 2050, one in five people worldwide will be over the age of 60. And in Australia, our population of over 80’s will triple by 2050! At NovaCare, we have found that people are looking for a combination of interesting outings and thoughtful, innovative programs to enhance their quality of life. As I watched the show I was encouraged to know that many of their highlighted activities, including ‘Cycling Without Age’ and ‘Moove and Groove’, are already being offered by NovaCare in the Hunter. I am also delighted that NovaCare has partnered with a local Pre School to form an Intergenerational Playgroup. This monthly gathering is an opportunity to bring together elders who live in their own homes with these little children. This program wouldn’t be possible without the support of the Pre School and the willingness of the children’s parents to support this idea. There are benefits to all, including the four year olds who may not have grandparents in their life. As our Australian population ages, we need people of all ages to play a role in an inclusive community that ensures our elders are included and valued.

LAW

Matters by Rob Dilley of Newcastle Legal

Why engage a lawyer Some people aren’t exactly sure what a lawyer’s role is. It starts with explaining to the client how the law can be expected to deal with the problems they face. The client provides information in the form of instructions and evidence. The lawyer assesses that information in the context of the law. This seems simple enough however the law is neither always straightforward nor accords with commonsense. It’s based on centuries of accumulated wisdom and experience that also shifts in response to community standards. A good lawyer in criminal matters explains the process, the strategic options available and the possible outcomes. Then the lawyer represents the client in accordance with their instructions, putting the client’s best case forward. A good lawyer in civil (non-criminal) matters does all of the above but also ensures the client does not commence legal proceedings or defend proceedings without reasonable prospects of success. This is a protection for clients aimed at ensuring they achieve the best possible outcome in their particular circumstances. Using a lawyer after things have gone wrong can be expensive and complicated. Getting preliminary advice can be one of the best investments you can make. Often after one conference with a lawyer a client will have obtained clear guidance on their case and what their options are. Legal advice is often best given in a businesslike, strategic and dispassionate manner. In practice it is often difficult for a client to consider their own case in this way because it involves things that are personal. This is where a good lawyer is really able to help a client understand the commercial and legal imperatives and assist in making a decision achieving the best possible outcome.
