At just 15 years of age Zalia Campbell of New Lambton is a bonafide tech founder and ‘teenpreneur.’ In 2016, at the tender age of ten, Zalia, who lives with Type 1 Diabetes, came up with the idea of using technology to help others living with diabetes. With the idea in her head, Zalia announced to her dad Michael that she wanted to design an app to help diabetes patients experiencing a potential emergency. This month’s issue of The Local has a strong focus on the upcoming local government elections. And that’s not just because I am a candidate. It probably helps though, just quietly. I bang on about local elections every time they come around. I think there’s now been four elections or byelections in the time I’ve been publishing The Local. Local government is the level of public administration that is most likely to impact your life locally. It’s important that we take the opportunity offered by the compulsory voting system to have a say in determining who sits around the table that constitutes our local council. At the last local government elections in September 2017 ward 3 had a voter turnout of just over 81%. So almost 1 in 5 of us didn’t show up at a polling booth. With the Electoral Commission issuing $55 fines to the ‘no shows’, just the handful of suburbs that make up ward 3 would have generated fines of more than $280,000. Can you imagine what the voter turnout would be if it wasn’t compulsory? Let’s do better this time around. You will find profiles of the six candidates for ward 3 councillor on pages 16-19 of this issue. The profiles for the four candidates for lord mayor are on pages 20 and 21. Please have a read, ask yourself who might best serve your community in these roles, then show up on election day Saturday 4 December. There will be 23 different places you can place your ward 3 vote. Alternately there will be five pre-poll locations across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie open for business in the fortnight before election day.. For more information go to https://www.elections. nsw.gov.au/Elections/Find-my-electorate/Councils/ Newcastle/Ward-3 Apologies that some of our regular content has not appeared in this month’s issue. Do not adjust your letterbox, normal transmission will return to The Local soon! www.thelocalnewcastle.com.au
Meet Ward 3 hopefuls at forum Unsure about how you will vote in the upcoming local council election? Put your questions to those who are seeking your vote at a ‘Meet the Candidates for Ward 3’ forum on Wednesday 17 November at Club Lambton (formerly Lambton Bowling Club). Hosted by Lambton Residents Group, the forum is the ideal opportunity to meet and speak with each of the candidates for the council election for Ward 3. Ward 3 covers suburbs including Lambton, New Lambton, New Lambton Heights, North Lambton, Hamilton North where The Local is delivered to. It also includes Birmingham Gardens, Georgetown, Jesmond, Waratah, and Waratah West as well as parts of Elermore Vale, Kotara, Rankin Park and Wallsend. All interested local residents and business people are invited to attend. Entry is free and the event will run from 5.30 until 7pm. Please try to be at the club by 5.15pm to allow the event to run to schedule. Each of the lead candidates for the Ward 3 election have been invited to participate in the forum which will be facilitated by the Rector of St John Anglican Church Lambton and Secretary of Lambton Residents Group, Rev’d Kate Heath. “This will be the third time that Lambton Residents Group has held a Meet the Candidates forum, having done so in the 2015 by election and then the 2017 council elections.” Rev’d Heath told The Local. Local. “We’ve all been reminded of how vital our immediate local community and spaces are during this time. This event gives us the chance to understand the priorities of those who want to represent us and build relationships with those we will work most closely with as residents of Ward 3”.

Zalia’s diabetes emergency app
After a bit of a chat, she came back a few hours later with a drawing of how she imagined the app would look and a brief on how it would work. The Local first spoke with Zalia in late 2016 about her idea. Now after five years of fundraising and thanks to many generous, big-hearted people, a bit of research, many developer discussions, design and testing, the Diabetes Emergency App has come to life. The app is available on the App Store and on Google Play Store. “If you want to see what’s possible from the mind of a 10-year-old, Zalia’s age when the journey began, I invite you to spend $1.49 at the App Store and check it out. If you like it, feel free to give it 5 stars!” Michael told The Local. “If you know some living with any kind of Diabetes, please let them know. You could be doing them a huge favour.” Mr Campbell added.

Not for profits working together to support children and families Not-for-profit employment and training services provider, VERTO, announced in October a partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities Northern NSW to support seriously ill or injured children and their families at a time when they need it most. The two organisations recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to work together. As part of this MOU, VERTO will not only make a donation of $20,000, but will give families who are part of RMHC programs access to training and employment options and assistance. VERTO will also support and promote Ronald McDonald House fundraising events, workplace donation initiatives and corporate volunteering programs throughout the year to raise awareness and additional funds for this vitally important charity. “RMHC has a long history of supporting the community, providing accommodation and other vital services to 60,000 children and families across the country each year,” VERTO Chief Executive Officer Ron Maxwell said. “We are honoured to play a small part in helping the Northern NSW branch to support the ever-changing needs of seriously ill children and their families. “VERTO aims to positively transform the lives of individuals, families and our local communities, and we see this MOU as yet another way we can achieve this mission.” RMHC NNSW CEO Ross Bingham said the new partnership with VERTO and generous donation would go directly towards supporting the many families that stay or use any of the programs across the Northern NSW chapter. “To put this contribution into context, it will allow us to provide families throughout Northern NSW with
Ronald McDonald House Charities Northern NSW CEO Ross Bingham and Ronald McDonald House volunteer Julie receiving VERTO’s generous donation tutoring through our learning program and support through our family rooms in Gosford and Newcastle, while our local families experience time in the Children’s Hospital,” he said. “Families have the ability to spend family time together at our Family Retreat in Forster and a ‘home away from home’ at our Newcastle and Tamworth Ronald McDonald Houses while their child is seriously ill or injured in hospital. “As an organisation that relies heavily on the support of the community, we can’t thank VERTO enough for this support and the ongoing partnership. Together we can make a difference for seriously ill children and their families.” The partnership will be commemorated with the addition of a VERTO Leaf to the ‘Tree of Love’ located at Ronald McDonald House at John Hunter Hospital.

City counts COVID cost

The recent lockdown of Newcastle due COVID is expected to cost the City of Newcastle $8.5 million this year alone with the biggest financial hits coming from the loss of tonnages to the waste management centre at Summerhill, the temporary closure of the Civic Theatre, the closure of the Stockton Holiday Park and a reduction in the number of people using parking meters in the CBD as well as parking tickets being issued. CEO Jeremy Bath said City of Newcastle was well-placed to weather these short-term economic fluctuations because of its strong financial foundations, while the increased works program will have far-reaching benefits. “Just like the majority of businesses and organisations in our city and region, our organisation has been significantly affected by COVID-19,” Mr Bath said. “We are fortunate that, despite the impacts of COVID, we have been able to manage these financial setbacks without them threatening the sustainability of the organisation or requiring us to consider other measures such as rate increases or reduced staffing levels.” Mr Bath said.

The noise and sight of cockatoos and green parrots. Lots of squawky crows were having a war against a flock of myna birds. I’ve never seen so many birds here at once. It was like watching Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds movie. It gave me goose bumps. I wished I had a movie camera to show what I was seeing. Just as the noise was quietening down two of our local kookaburras started to laugh. The parrots settled down to eat seeds from the many trees. The crows lost the battle when the myna birds dive bombed them away. Does anyopne know how to get rid of pesky myna birds? -A New Lambton resident

Visitors to Art Bazaar can meet local makers and have the assurance of returning to the next Art Bazaar to find their favourite artisans. By purchasing direct from the makers shoppers are supporting locals. “The point of difference with Art Bazaar is that you won’t find many of our stallholders at other markets - most of our traders will only set up stalls at Art Bazaar”, Margo Humphries, Publicity Officer,

Ward 3 candidates profiles... Darren Brollo Animal Justice Party
Proudly representing the Animal Justice Party in his home town of Newcastle is Darren Brollo. Following his passion for animal rights, Darren is a strong advocate for urgent change to the inherently cruel practices of modern intensive factory farming. Adopting a plant based diet over 30 years ago as part of a compassionate lifestyle, he promotes the many benefits of veganism including personal health and environmental sustainability. As a proponent of equality for all species, Darren believes that animals should not be viewed as property or used as food, clothing, research subjects, entertainment or sport. In line with the Animal Justice Parties Four Core Values of Kindness, Equality, Rationality and Non-Violence, Darren stands for social justice, representing the animals, the environment and the most vulnerable in our society. “Which for me aligns with a belief system, an ideology that everything is interconnected, “one health”, the direct connection and interdependence between human health, animal health and ecosystem/environmental health.” Highly regarded for his drumming ability, music has alway been a platform for Darren to share the message of animal rights and encourage others to consider ethical and humane choices. A founding member of the highly successful Australian band Lo-tel, Darren achieved ARIA nominations and a National No.1
single with ‘Teenager of the Year’. He combines his love of music and education as Principal of Hunter business, The dbmusic Drum Academy. Darren is often found out and about with his 11 year old rescued Golden Retriever, Bella, and his more recent Dingo/Kelpie rescue, Indie. He has spent time caring for many rescued companion and farm animals over many years. His other interests include sustainable architecture, tiny houses and minimalism in a bid to reduce our footprint on the planet. Darren is very happily married with two teenage children, and with the support of his family feels honoured to have been selected by the Animal Justice Party to be a voice for the animals, the environment and the most vulnerable in our society. _____________________

You may know me as the founder and publisher of The Local, Local, which you’re reading right now. But let me tell you a little more about myself. I’m married to Katrina, who is my rock and I’m father to four gorgeous kids. I have lived in Newcastle and the Hunter for more than 30 years and in Ward 3, Lambton in particular, for the last 14 years. When I’m not getting The Local to the printers then into your letterbox I’m a disability support worker with a local not-for-profit community services provider. I love my two ‘jobs’. They are very

different roles but they have both grown within me a strong sense of identity and community. Before founding The Local in 2014 I had worked for more than 20 years in sales and general management for some of Australia’s largest media companies. I’ve always been keenly interested in helping small local businesses succeed. Ward 3 is blessed with some great neighbourhood business centres with hardworking, innovative business owners. Locally-owned and operated small businesses add colour and character to a community. I believe there’s more that local government can do to support and encourage local business people. Our community’s sustained growth and development is served best by local people representing local people. It’s as simple as that. I have met the costs of this election campaign personally and not sought donations from any person or business. It’s vital that local councillors are free from influence by donors. This current term of council has been characterised by name calling and marred by petty political games and an ‘us’ versus ‘them’ or government versus opposition mindset that doesn’t belong in local government. Our city deserves better. The elected council should be the voice of the community not the mouthpieces of the big parties. If elected I pledge to play my part in bringing respect, co-operation and constructive debate back to council. (continued over page)

(from previous page) Good civic leadership can achieve so much more than the political games we’ve endured during this council term. It’s important too that your elected representatives don’t view the position of councillor as a stepping stone to a bigger political stage. If you agree with me that our community deserves genuine, local representation with no big party ties, no head office and no behind the scenes donors please vote Mark B for Ward 3! _____________________

I was first elected as a ward 3 councillor in 2008 then again in 2012, and continued my local advocacy as lord mayor since 2014. I work closely with the current ward 3 Councillor Peta WinneyBaartz and deputy lord mayor Declan Clausen. At the upcoming election, I will be joined on the Ward 3 ticket by Cr Peta Winney-Baartz and Margaret Wood. Peta Winney-Baartz is a proud mum of four, and is well known in the New Lambton community, working as an early childhood teacher. Margaret Wood is a retired solicitor from New Lambton and a strong advocate for people with disabilities. The Newcastle Labor team has delivered significant upgrades to ward 3 infrastructure like our roads, footpaths, and drainage, as well as to our green open spaces and sporting facilities.
Peta and I have delivered new playgrounds in New Lambton, Hamilton North, and at Blackbutt Reserve, as well as the North Lambton Dog Park. Working with local sporting clubs, we have secured significant upgrades to our sporting facilities. Protecting and securing Novocastrian Park from ongoing vandalism has been a proud achievement, with Peta leading the advocacy at Council for this to occur. Our leadership has seen $42 million invested into sporting facilities over the last 4 years, delivering drainage improvements and facility upgrades across the City. Our words have been backed by actions. The upcoming rejuvenation of Blackbutt Village at Orchardtown Road will see improved amenity for the popular shopping precinct. As a disability advocate, Margaret has provided important feedback on accessibility that has been integrated into the design. Addressing family and domestic violence has always been a strong focus for our team. Peta and I have ensured that Council has supported charity partners Got Your Back Sista and Nova for Women and Children through significant fundraising and advocacy campaigns. ______________________

From 2010 to 2012 Katrina worked in HMRI in medical research for respiratory conditions. In the late 90s Katrina was involved with John Hunter Children’s Research Foundation working in a team to raise much needed funds for research for children’s medical health issues. In 2017, Katrina set up Newcastle Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, raising money to help support CF Australia, Pediatrics and Adults in the Hunter New England area. Katrina is married to Professor Peter Wark who is a Respiratory Specialist, and they have 7 children, a son in law, daughter in law and two grandchildren. Katrina was born in Newcastle and is very passionate about her community, which needs someone who will give the suburbs of Ward 3 a voice and more control over what happens in this part of Newcastle. Katrina believes that our community deserves better than the current lack of transparency in Newcastle City Council, with most of the money spent in other parts of the city. The community is tired of the infighting that has been the norm for the Council, they want to see local results from their hard earned rates. Council has been wasting money, with the new council chambers being a perfect example. The Newcastle community is being forced to needlessly pay millions of dollars for the new council premises, when that money could have gone to much needed local facilities.

He has identified 82 streets in ward 3 without a footpath and is committed to fixing this, as well as increasing the number of cycleways. A former policeman and police prosecutor, Dave has served on various high profile Strike Forces investigating serious offences including armed robbery, sexual assault and murder. Dave also formerly led the Hunter and Newcastle Rugby League, the largest senior rugby league competition anywhere in the world. He’s a qualified rugby league referee and cricket umpire. For more than 15 years, Dave has been involved with several sporting, community and charitable organisations and is heavily focused on contributing to community projects. Jenny Barrie Liberal Party
I have lived in Newcastle for 32 years, have two adult children and five beautiful grandchildren. I am president of Hunter Business Lions Club, a Newcastle Music Festival committee member and treasurer of Smokva Community Garden. I am the site manager of Electrodry Storage Solutions. After running small businesses for more than two decades, I have developed a lot of skills that will help me to work with council staff, councillors, Page 20 > The Local > November 2021
ratepayers, residents and business. If elected to Newcastle Council, I will use my business acumen and experience to help our resident and business community, to ensure Newcastle City Council continues to develop, and to provide services in assisting the ongoing development of Newcastle city into the future. If elected, I will passionately advocate for better services and infrastructure for our ratepayers and businesses. I will also be able to work with the Liberal state and federal governments to attract more support and investment into our city.
After the two years of lockdowns Newcastle is coming alive again, and we have an unmissable opportunity to make this place even better. We will work hard to support small businesses and help the recover from the impact of the pandemic and create new jobs. I will make it my personal priority to work with tourism operators and travel industry stakeholders. Newcastle is an amazing city and there are opportunities to attract visitation as it is the gateway to the Hunter region. Our team will also freeze residential rates for the next two years, after the large rate increases over the past two council terms. We will also review the special business rate, and ensure that it is properly used to promote local businesses and invest back into the business areas where the funds are collected. Newcastle Art Gallery and Lambton Pool, both need attention and a plan for refurbishment. _____________________
John Church Independent
John was elected as a ward Independent in 2017. He is seeking re-election this year. John was an NBN journalist and newsreader for more than 20 years. He has also owned a number of small businesses, and now works in property sales. John is married with three children and one grandchild. He is passionate about connecting and listening to the community www.thelocalnewcastle.com.au
and providing them with a strong voice inside council. John believes in an accountable, transparent council that is free from party politics, spin and secrets He was a vocal critic of the $17.6m fit out of council’s rented administration building. He pledges to freeze rate increases next financial year after years of massive increases under Labor. John will also tackle the infrastructure backlog and has positive plans to build more footpaths and cycleways, upgrade inland swimming pools, improve local sporting facilities, parks, playgrounds and local town centres. _____________________
John Mackenzie The Greens
Dr John Mackenzie has been a Newcastle councillor since 2017. As a councillor, John has championed Newcastle’s transition to a carbon neutral city and participatory urban planning for more liveable suburbs and neighbourhoods. He is an outspoken community leader on such issues as climate change, housing affordability, environment, heritage, active transport and urban forests. John is a social researcher and policy consultant by profession, with almost 20 years experience in academic, government and consulting roles. During his time on council, John has built on his solid reputation as a local community organiser, where he worked on campaigns for improved environmental and health regulations to reduce air and water pollution in our port
and rail corridor suburbs, and opposing the fourth coal terminal. As lord mayor, John will continue his work to make the City of Newcastle a safe, sustainable, liveable city for everyone, with a thriving local economy, surrounded by a healthy natural environment and stunning pristine coastline. John is committed to an affordable Newcastle that is cooled and shaded by urban forest, able to meet citizens’ needs within a 20-minute trip from their home and is carbon neutral by 2040. He also believes in an open, transparent council, and will make it easier for members of the community to address council meetings, explore participatory budgeting methods, and re-establish council supported committee forums so residents get a proper say in the life of our great city. _____________________

The Emperor of Nihon-Ja, Nihon-Ja, and all of John Flanagan’s books, are well worth the time spent reading them. John Flanagan, without fail, takes his readers into an adventure filled world, not to far from our own. John Flanagan started writing the Rangers Apprentice series to draw his son into a love of reading. He has since expanded it into four different series, The Ranger’s Apprentice, Ranger’s Apprentice: The Early Years, The Royal Ranger, and The Brotherband, Brotherband, containing over twenty books altogether. His books appeal to readers of all ages, ethnicities, and genders. In The Emperor of Nihon-Ja, Nihon-Ja, Horace, the best knight in the kingdom of Araluen, has been sent on a military mission to the far-away land of Nihon-Ja. He has been gone for months. Will - a Kings Ranger, Alyss - an Araluen Courier, and Evanlyn – the crown princess must travel to Nihon-Ja, find out what has happened and rescue Horace. It turns out that the Senshi class has rebelled against the Emperor and Horace has stayed to help him defend. Now he and Will must find men who are skilled and willing to fight against the highly trained Senshi warriors. Evanlyn and Alyss must overcome their ongoing opposition to seek the help of a mysterious mountain-dwelling tribe. John Flanagan weaves strong male and female characters into a story blending adventure, romance, and fantasy. This with his blow-by-blow battle recount keeps readers enthralled all the way through. Anyone wishing to be swept up into adventure will thoroughly enjoy this book. Review by Miriam Grey Is there a book you would like to review? VET Chat by Dr Fiona Wallace of New Lambton Veterinary Clinic
Pyometra
The word pyometra is derived from Latin “pyo” meaning pus and “metra” meaning uterus. Pyometra is an abscessed, pus-filled infected uterus. Toxins and bacteria leak across the uterine walls and into the bloodstream, causing life-threatening toxic effects. The uterus dies, releasing large amounts of pus and dead tissue into the abdomen. Without treatment death is inevitable. Prevention of this disease is one of the main reasons for routinely spaying female dogs. Honey, who visited us last Monday, was a typical candidate. At eight years of age she had never had a litter. Her owners had considered it for a few years but never found the right doggy daddy. As time went by she seemed too old for an anaesthetic to be spayed and she
seemed to cope with her heat periods well. She had only just finished her season two weeks before we saw her which is a typical risk factor for pyometra. She had a poor appetite, was vomiting a little and she was drinking an excessive amount of water. Many dogs have “open” pyometra, easy to diagnose because the cervix is open and the purulent uterine contents drip out so that a smelly vaginal discharge is apparent. However, we suspected a “closed” pyometra with Honey - there was no vaginal discharge but we could see a very enlarged uterus on ultrasound as well as toxic changes in her blood picture. The treatment for pyometra is surgical removal of the uterus and ovaries. It is crucial that the infected uterine contents do not spill and that no excess bleeding occurs. The surgery is challenging, especially if the patient, like Honey, is toxic. Pre operative fluids, antibiotics and pain relief are administered, and two vets are required in surgery to carefully handle the infected tissue to ensure it does not rupture during the procedure. We can’t overemphasise the importance of spaying! Female dogs and cats can benefit from spaying at any age. Pyometra is highly likely to occur if a female pet is left unspayed and any risks of surgery are very much out-weighed by the risk of pyometra! There is nothing routine about a pyometra spay but luckily Honey’s surgery went well and she was able to go home to convalesce over the next few days. She’s now eating well and chasing the ball again after critical illness and touch and go surgery.

LAW
Matters by Karina Hanson
Senior Lawyer at Newcastle Legal & Conveyancing
Can my ex be required to move from our house? Separations are times of upheaval where the financial resources of each party are often strained. Sometimes a client asks whether they can require their ex to leave the family home to live elsewhere. The starting point is that both parties have the right to remain in the home regardless of whose name is on title or on the rental agreement. Where possible your best option is to try and come to an agreement. If that is not possible you can apply to the court for a sole occupancy order permitting one person to live in the house and the other to leave. You should seek advice on the factors the court will consider, the strength of your case and the length of time it may take to be heard. Usually but not always the party that moves from a property will be held by a family court not to be liable to their ex for rent, mortgage and other usual household related costs incurred after they vacate. The rationale is that the person moving will have their own housing costs to pay. The person who moved will still be liable to their landlord or mortgagee bank for rent and mortgage payments if their ex does not pay. If you fear for your safety or your children’s safety it is important that you take steps to be safe. You may need to go to a safe house or reach out to support services. This will not affect your right to apply for a sole occupancy order. If there is family violence the NSW Government’s Staying Home Leaving Violence program may be able to assist.
Our specialist family lawyers will • provide excellent advice explaining your options; • negotiate the best possible settlement; • represent you skilfully in Court; and • listen to you empathetically. We also draft consent orders and binding financial agreements.

PHYSIO
Matters with Ben Hutton of Brightside Physio
Pain makes you feel 20 year older
That’s what Chrissie* said when I first met her on a cold and miserable September morning. I was chirpy and chipper despite my damp socks and questionable hairdo. Chrissie was not. She said her hip had been feeling like it was ‘violet crumbly’ for 92 days (not that she was counting) and her back had started seizing up in sympathy and thus she had most definitely, without
doubt, unequivocally aged 20 years in three months. What had started out as a niggle, had progressed to annoying and was now in full flight stop-this-ride-Iwant-to-get-off agony. The pain-aging had started when she noticed that putting on her shoes was a bit iffy. Then with little decorum, she couldn’t sit on the loo without her back yelling at her. Life for Chrissie was looking like the weather: dark, sticky and difficult to walk in. There was a hint of panic in the corner of her eyes and body language that suggested that if I asked her to do any exercise - she’d take to me with the long handle… This is what she asked me: What is it? How long will it take? Can you help me? I explained the mechanics behind her pain and gave her an outline of the expected timeframe. I then started working on releasing the pressure on her ‘crumbly’ hip and dodgy lower back. She needed some basic, easy to remember (not scary) exercises and thankfully (for me and for her) she walked out with a wide grin and a cautious spring in her step. 6 weeks later, I told her not to come back for 2 months. She was unbelievably happy and gave me a high five as she left – “Thank you” and also as she walked out the door: “Get a haircut!” If you want to start feeling less pain and get back to your full life – book online now at www. brightsidephysio.com.au or call 0431 614 344.

PARENTING
Matters with Mel Burgess of Love Parenting
Boundary creep
Six months ago you quite likely had pretty clear boundaries with your kids around things like screentime, mealtime and household responsibilities. No doubt they would have been regularly checking those boundaries by breaking rules. The important difference, though, is that pre-lockdown you had more patience and general capacity to clearly, calmly, kindly hold the limits you had intentionally chosen for within your household. Fast forward six months and the eased restrictions have brought in an unrealistic expectation of ‘back to normal’ when things in most households are FAR from ‘back to normal’.
Parents are telling me with great shame that they feel like they’ve let the horse bolt on so many fronts. That their family has gotten into all manner of bad habits. That they don’t even know where to start with resetting all of that. Maybe that is you too. Go easy on yourself. You just parented through a pandemic. It makes perfect sense that you got loose on your usual rules in order to cope through. Our nervous systems have been in varied states of heightened alert for months. ‘Years’ if you didn’t get to recalibrate after COVID through 2020 quite the curveball. We aren’t designed for such prolonged states of fearfully risk-assessing like that. Our fight/flight/freeze response is our body flooding with chemicals that help us protect ourselves in a pivotal moment (eg to fight, flee or play dead if a bear comes to the entrance of our cave). It’s really depleting to be in that heightened state for as long as you have been and makes parenting the way you intend to incredibly hard. Sing out with what you have going on and I’ll happily talk to you about which parts I can get alongside you on. I’m a Parenting Coach. It’s what I do. Mel www.loveparenting.com.au

MIND
Matters by Dr Stuart Edser
Principal Psychologist at Newcastle Psychology & Health
New start
Spring is Sprung. Daylight saving is here. Lockdowns are mostly over, and restrictions are eased. The smell of jasmine is in the air and the azaleas are putting on a lovely show. Spring is here and it feels like life is returning. The long slow torpor of winter is done. We are moving into a new more hopeful phase with Covid. Spring is actually a really great time to make a new start. There is probably no such thing as a total brand
new start. It was the fashion not so long ago to try a ‘sea-change’ or a ‘tree-change’, where people left their neighbourhoods and charged off to the coast or into the country to start all over again. Were they successful? Well, it was limited. Surveys showed that many people found the enterprise not as fulfilling as they had hoped. They still brought their histories, their memories, their relationships and their behaviours with them and soon enough, some of the old stuff started to reappear. Added to that was the surprise that it was not always easy to break into an existing community where locals go way back. Still, sea-changes notwithstanding, I like to renew in Spring. The newness in the air, the warmth, the light is invigorating and it makes me want to get out and live life a bit more. To get outdoors, to walk and run, to swim in the ocean, to see friends and catch up with people, to go out to dinner, to see some movies, to dig in the garden and do a spring clean around the house. To discard some unhelpful behaviours and try some more positive ones. Spring brings the promise that life can be good and the motivation to make some changes. What part of your life are you thinking you might like to have a new start in?
