It’s bubble bliss • Issue No 90 • Newcastle’s favourite community newspaper • October 2021 •

After 7 weeks of staying at home, isolated from their friends, young people aged 18 years and under who live in stay-at-home areas across NSW are able to create a bubble of three friends and visit each other’s homes for play and activity. ‘Friends bubbles’ as they are known, are subject to the following conditions: Each child is allowed to have two designated friends come to their house. These two friends must always be the same, creating a three-person ‘friends bubble’; All people 18 years and over in all the households must be fully vaccinated; The friends must reside within 5km of each other or in the same LGA and if parents/carers are dropping children off, they must not stay to interact with other parents or carers. Premier Gladys Berejiklian said that the strong vaccination rate across NSW has allowed the changes to support the wellbeing of young people. “Parents and children have had a difficult few months, trying to balance both work, often from home, as well as home schooling,” Ms Berejiklian said. Advertising bookings for November issue close on Friday 15th October The Local is lovingly produced then carefully hand delivered each and every month to more than 11,000 residential letterboxes and businesses in Lambton, North Lambton, New Lambton, New Lambton Heights, Broadmeadow, Hamilton North, Jesmond and Kotara. You can find back issues of The Local and check out the latest community news and information at: www.thelocalnewcastle.com.au or on our Facebook page @thelocalnewcastle. If you enjoy receiving The Local in your letterbox each month please support the businesses you see advertising on these pages. Without their support your local paper could not and would not happen. Roll up that sleeve and get the jab! Better still, get it twice. The Newcastle Local Government Area is lagging the rest of the state in terms of COVID-19 vaccination. At the time of going to print 75.2% of Novocastrians have had one dose and 47.4% have had both doses. Across NSW these figures are 84% and 56.4 % respectively. Yes, there have been some delays with supplies and some of the government communication around the whole vaccination process has been ordinary, but there’s no excuses for not having made your appointment. If you still need convincing there are just two statistics I will quote to you here. The percentage of people in ICU in NSW who are not vaccinated is 74.2%. The percentage of people in ICU in NSW who are double dose vaccinated is 3.7%! There’s no reasonable argument against vaccination, notwithstanding a medical practitioner’s advice that it’s not for you. Let’s not be the LGA that holds NSW back from opening for business. Secondly it will soon be time to roll up and vote in the local council elections. These are presently set down for Saturday 4 December (but we’ve had two postponements already and the pandemic may still have the last word) but let’s assume for now it will proceed in December. If you have moved house in recent months or years it’s time to make sure your enrolment is up to date. If you’ve turned 18 in recent years it’s time to enrol. The roll closes on Monday 25 October. You can check your enrolment at https://elections.nsw.gov.au/ With a $55 fine on offer to anyone who fails to vote and only limited opportunities to vote outside the LGA you live in, it’s worth knowing your enrolment is in order. www.thelocalnewcastle.com.au

Rapid response funding for services City of Newcastle has provided $110,000 towards the purchase of food packages and toiletries, as well as crisis accommodation, counselling and web connectivity to community groups responding to the current lockdown of the city. Newcastle lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the funding was part of an expanded Community and Economic Resilience Package (CERP) designed to combat the economic and social impacts of the current lockdown. “City of Newcastle has an important role in coordinating local services and providing targeted support,” Cr Nelmes said. “When the pandemic was declared last year City of Newcastle was quick to respond to the needs of our community, providing rapid financial support to frontline services struggling to cope with the sudden surge in demand. “With the current Delta outbreak placing added strain on community members and the services that support them, City of Newcastle has expanded this response, dispersing more than $110,000 amongst 15 community organisations. “Our Rapid Response Grants will give these organisations the resources they need to address critical challenges for some of

Family Support Newcastle team leader Erin Beard and lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes with items for families in need of support. our most vulnerable residents as we continue to work together to stay safe and keep our community strong.” The grants will allow existing service providers to supply nutritious food and vouchers for essential needs, improve access to community services, address issues such as social isolation, and increase access to affordable internet, digital technology and equipment to improve participation in education and access to essential services.

WE’RE OPEN 7 DAYS

Erin Beard from the Family Support Network said the funding would allow them to help more families by providing food, toiletries and baby items, as well as school supplies to help children and young people improve their home learning experience. “We are all generally feeling the stress of lockdown but for families who are already under duress, these COVID times add an extra load. This grant from City of Newcastle has meant we can relieve some of that stress,” Ms Beard said.

‘Love Lambton’ to fund park asset Your readers will agree I’m sure that 2021 has been a very challenging year. Our community it would appear still has many challenges ahead. To that end, this note is to inform you that due to the unprecedented and constantly changing environment as we all live with COVID-19 and after careful consideration, the organising committee made the decision to cancel the Sunday 27th June celebration in Lambton Park. This would have capped off wonderfully what had already been a fantastic week of events to mark Lambton’s 150th anniversary. It’s no exaggeration to say that everything up until and including Saturday 26th June went off perfectly. We could not have asked for better support and involvement from the community.

All aspects of the week starting with the media launch on the Monday 21st through to the Elder Street Sale Day on the Saturday, the wonderful walking history tours hosted by Newcastle Theatre Company and the marvellous Love Lambton Lunch at Lizotte’s left us more than satisfied with how things unfolded. We considered rescheduling the Community Day event to a later date but given the ongoing concerns around the pandemic and with the safety of our community at the forefront of our thinking we have decided that a future Sunday event which may also be cancelled through factors outside our control is not the best use of the remaining funds. The committee has met a number of times since June and discussed what we might (continued next page)

We will of course report to your readers and the community on progress with this final project. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all the creative partners, sponsors, supporters, contributors and committee members who made the Love Lambton 150 Years celebrations, at least as far as they got, such a wonderful success. Why I joined Jesmond Lions (part III) I am an old Lambton boy, born at East Lambton and lived in Kendall Street, Lambton until I married (at St Johns, Lambton). Lambton was and is a great place to live! I joined Jesmond Lions Club in 1967 because of an invitation from a friend who was a member. Many years later my wife Trish joined as well. It was a life changing invitation because Lions is a worldwide organisation of some 1.4 million members in over 200 countries. Here in Australia we have 1,300 clubs (nearly every town has one) and we all pitch in together to help our communities. In time of disasters such as drought, fire and flood relief these needs are administered by the local clubs in the affected areas. Our club of Jesmond is also part of a global organisation (Lions International) which helps whenever a disaster has struck overseas and international aid is sent to that country. Australia was the recipient with help given for the recent bushfires. We in Jesmond Lions are part of

the famous Bunnings barbecues down at Wallsend so please look us up and say hello and we will tell you more about our club. You will see some of our members helping out at Jesmond Neighbourhood Centre with the collecting and distribution of food for the needy in the Jesmond area. You will see us at Jesmond Central every Sunday near the escalator selling Lucky envelopes or helping with breakfasts at Waratah West Primary School and at Christmas and Mother’s Day at Jesmond Central wrapping presents just to name a few of our projects. Look out for our yellow shirts. Very soon you will see our tasty Lions Christmas Cakes and Puddings popping up in shops around the local area and the sale of these cakes gives us much needed money to help others less fortunate. Jesmond Lions is more than just a club raising money and helping others. The friendships formed are more than just as helpers at a barbecue or other fund raiser, they

Bubble bliss

“This change will hopefully make a big difference for families during the school holidays and allow young children and teenagers to catch up and reconnect with their friends.” Health Minister Brad Hazzard said the government has tried to strike a balance between the best possible health outcomes, whilst easing the pressures on families and individuals living in lockdown. “These latest changes are aimed at giving children more opportunities to be together and balances COVID safety with their mental health and wellbeing,” Mr Hazzard said. Minister for Education and Early Childhood Sarah Mitchell said this change would also benefit older students, allowing them to create a study bubble ahead of the HSC. “Year 12 students have had a stressful few months, and with the HSC approaching, a study bubble is a great idea to help students maintain motivation, receive support from a classmate and continue their preparation for the upcoming exams,” Ms Mitchell said.

Hunter Heart Safe By Daisy Smart Did you know that 30,000 people die annually in Australia due to sudden cardiac arrest? Members of the Hunter Heart Safe organisation are working hard to educate locals on how to minimise this statistic. Hunter Heart Safe was founded in 2019, the name deriving from the concept of a ‘heart safe community’, a population where there are enough community-based people who know how to do CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator), allowing for a higher chance of survival from cardiac arrest. Volunteers doctors, nurses and

paramedics make up the members of this amazing organisation. With over one hundred associates, they have been able to train around 2,000 locals in the use of CPR and an AED in the Newcastle and Hunter region. Shaun, one of the volunteers, says that he has been involved in various training sessions over the last two years and says he has seen great positive feedback emerge from the community around the organisation’s training sessions. “Basically, we want to train the community on how to do hands only CPR and use an AED as community bystanders were more obliged to start CPR if they didn’t have to do mouth to mouth,” says Shaun. “For someone who has a sudden cardiac

arrest in the community, immediate CPR from a bystander and the use of an AED, can increase their survival rate fivefold.” Recently, the organisation has found it difficult to conduct regular lessons due to COVID-19 lockdowns. “With restrictions, it’s hard to get out and do those faceto-face training sessions, but we are gearing up to continue our training sessions in the community once restrictions ease.” says Shaun. Training sessions are completely free for any community group, business or organisation that are interested. Newcastle Libraries come 2U Avid readers will be able to turn the pages of their favourite books once again following the launch of a new Newcastle Libraries service, Library 2U, which will see books, movies and music delivered to the homes of members. The initiative ensures Newcastle Libraries members can continue to connect with library services during the current stay at home orders, following the temporary closure of all branches when in lockdown. Lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes said that Novocastrians love connecting with their libraries and the service will keep the community informed and entertained during a trying time. “With more than 96,000 members, and loans reaching 1.3 million in the last year, it is clear that our community values the services and connection that the city’s libraries offer,” Cr Nelmes said. “Everyone loves the feeling of being transported into the world of their favourite book or movie and although we can’t yet welcome people back inside branches, we’re pleased to be able to launch Library 2U. “All it takes is a quick phone call or complete an online form and library staff will consider your preferences and hand-pick a selection of reading, watching or listening options, which will arrive at your door via contactless

delivery the following business day.” Library 2U is available now to all Newcastle Libraries members residing in Newcastle Local Government Area. A click and collect service may also soon be available following recent changes to the Public Health Order allowing libraries to facilitate collections. The click and collect service is expected to commence in early October. Membership to Newcastle Libraries and the Library 2U service is free and can be arranged by phoning 4974 5300 or visiting newcastle.nsw.gov.au/library

The Pale Horse

The Pale Horse is a gripping read about murder, written by the Queen of Mystery herself, Agatha Christie. This was my fourth dive into the world of Christie’s novels, and they never disappoint. Though this particular novel lacks any mention of our beloved detectives Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple, the role of investigator is bravely taken up by a new character, Mr Mark Easterbrook. Though no Poirot, he brings his own skills to the table in finding this killer. This novel opens with a priest being summoned to the bedside of a dying woman, and subsequently being murdered that night. What did Mrs Davis know? Was it enough to kill Father Gorman for? These questions lead Easterbrook to the old bar The Pale Horse, now inhabited by three strange women, claiming to practice the occult. Can they really do what they claim? Why does every road lead back to The Pale Horse? Easterbrook will stop at nothing to find out, enlisting the help of others throughout the novel. As with all of Christie’s novels, this novel ensnares you until the very last word, with a shocking reveal none see coming, but leaves you saying, “well now that I know it seems so obvious.” Do yourself a favour, and pick up this standalone Agatha Christie novel now, whether you’re a newcomer or a seasoned fan, any mystery lover is sure to find joy in this read. THAT WAS THEN This is now

William Thomas Dent

William Thomas Dent was born in Durham UK in 1844, the same year his father Mark was a key leader in the Miners’ Union in a bitter industrial dispute with colliery owners over working conditions. Having gained a reputation as a troublemaker, mine managers were reluctant to employ him, and Mark was forced to leave his native land to seek work in Australia. He arrived alone in the early 1860s, and was joined in 1866 by his family, including 22-year-old William. They settled in Lambton, both father and son working in Lambton colliery. Like his father, William was active in the miners’ union, pressing for better conditions. About 1874 he became a newspaper reporter and was the Lambton correspondent for The

Newcastle Herald and Miners’ Advocate until 1880. William also used his skill with words to address local concerns. In 1873 he penned “Lambton Bleatings”, a poem in which he satirized the local aldermen for their failure to maintain the streets of the town. His discontent with local governance did not stop there, and in 1877 he became an alderman himself, on the receiving end of complaints. In 1882 his father died, and when a new road on the North Lambton hill was created the following year, the name Dent Street was probably bestowed in honour of Mark Dent the famed mining unionist, rather than William the junior alderman. He went on to serve on the council for 17 years, many of them alongside Thomas Croudace the mine manager. He was elected Mayor five times, and in 1890 oversaw two significant events in Lambton’s history - the electric light scheme and the park rotunda. After working many years as Secretary of the Northumberland Permanent Building Society, illhealth forced William into retirement. He died at his home in October 1901, aged just 56. Today, 120 years later, the handsome rotunda built at his suggestion still stands as Lambton’s most iconic structure, with his name justly honoured in the column ornamentation. Changing tack

Sometimes, dealing with bureaucracy feels like you are banging your head against a brick wall. It can feel like you are swimming against a strong tide, with nowhere to go and no lifesaver in sight. In fact, most of the time, bureaucracy works well and we don’t notice it, because it is working as it should do – doing what we expect it to do. So what to do when bureaucracy isn’t working as it should? This is where it can be useful to change tack. After all, if you aren’t getting anywhere, there is no harm in trying something different.

Let me give you an example. In a previous job, I flew interstate a lot. Most of the time, everything went well and we arrived at our destination on time, or even ahead of time. But sometimes, nothing seemed to go right. It felt like once a couple of things went wrong with a flight, the airline “gave up” on that flight, prioritising the flights (and passengers) that were not experiencing issues. Eventually, we arrived at our destination – late, frazzled, frustrated. On one occasion, I was flying from Canberra to Melbourne on a hot summer’s day. It was over forty degrees. The previous flight had been cancelled. There was some delay with our flight and we were kept in the terminal. We were wondering if we would fly that day. Then, they boarded us into the plane. Next, the pilot announced there was an error with the paperwork. I had to laugh at this point; he was taking no responsibility for the paperwork error. Well, by now, there was a full plane of passengers sitting on the tarmac. You may recall this was a hot summer’s day. It was getting uncomfortably hot in the plane. Passengers asked for the air to be turned on, and the hostess replied that the air did not turn on until the engines were turned on. It didn’t take her long to stop responding to the increasingly annoyed passengers. As a very frequent flyer, I was at the front of the plane, right next to the open door and (relatively) fresh air. I was feeling queasy and giddy; not to mention the sweat. I didn’t want to think how it felt at the back of the plane, further from the open door. Eventually, the plane took off and we sweated the whole way to Melbourne – the plane still wasn’t comfortable when we landed! In fact, I felt unwell until the following day. I complained to the airline. They assured me everything was fine. I then asked for the air quality reports for that flight, from before we boarded. They again assured me everything was fine and within standards. This was getting nowhere. So, I changed tack. I thanked them for their response and told them that the next time I was feeling ill in a hot plane, the safest option would be to phone the ambulance. Now maybe it’s just me, but it feels like the company took seriously the ramifications of an ambulance on the tarmac to treat heat-exhausted passengers where the company dismissed my concerns. Ever since, this company’s planes sitting on the tarmac have the air turned on when passengers board. Arguing with bureaucracy didn’t work – changing tack seems to have created the space to resolve the issue. www.thelocalnewcastle.com.au

PARENTING

Matters with Mel Burgess of Love Parenting

Emerge intact

If you are doing the dreaded schooling and working from home double-header it is totally understandable if the start of the school term is coming with some serious angst. I heard Esther Perel say in a TED talk recently: “We aren’t working from home, we are working with home”. Isn’t that quite the reframe!? Imagine fronting to the office with all our household family members and associated distractions at 9am every morning and expecting ourselves, and them, to be able to work productively. Not a chance. Yet

there is all manner of trying going on and parents I’m talking to are reporting a real dwindling of the energy and patience reserves they had two months ago. Leading a family through to emerging intact from a lockdown is no mean feat. For this reason I have put together an audio course curating the most lockdownapplicable parenting information and activities from my 15 years working in Parenting Education. It is called ‘Emerge Intact From Parenting Through Lockdown’ and costs $135. Each of the 5 x 15min audio clips comes with a downloadable resource. One lap of Lambton Park and you will have heard the audio and a second lap and you will have had a chance to think through the associated activity or where at home you will position the customisable printable. The course will walk you through: - realistic expectations of yourself and those around you - clarifying expectations and boundaries with yourself, your partner, your kids and your employer - how you can support your own, your partner’s and your children’s emotional regulation through this time - evidence-based strategies for a household that has more connection and less overwhelm.

PHARMACY

Hair loss

Hair loss has many causes. It can be permanent or temporary. Most people’s hair grows more slowly as they get older and some people, mostly men, go bald. Some types of hair loss can happen to anyone at any age. Medicines can sometimes help stop hair loss. Each hair strand grows out from a hair follicle just under the surface of the skin. A scalp has about 100,000 hair follicles. Hair strands on the scalp normally grow about 1cm a month for two to five years. Eventually, a hair strand stops growing and, after about three months, falls out. This happens when the hair follicle starts to grow a new hair strand. A healthy person loses about 50–100 hairs from the scalp every day. If the hair-growing cycle is interrupted or hair follicles are injured or altered, hair strands may fall out early, not be replaced or be altered. This leads to thinning, or part or total baldness. Hair loss can also happen on other body areas. The medical name for hair loss is alopecia. Some types and causes of hair loss; Androgenetic alopecia (baldness) Androgenetic alopecia is a change in hair growth on the scalp that happens to many men and some women. Short, fine, pale hair starts growing in place of normal hair until eventually hair stops growing. Baldness is inherited from either side of the family. It is also related to age and to blood levels of certain hormones. Male pattern baldness – Hair is lost from the front of the head (receding hair line) and from the top of the head. Female pattern baldness – Hair loss is less noticeable than in men. Hair is lost from the top of the head without a receding hair line. Alopecia areata Hair is lost suddenly in one or more circular patches on the scalp or body. It can develop into hair loss over the entire scalp (alopecia totalis) or the entire body (alopecia universalis). It may be caused by an immune system problem. Other causes of hair loss include cancer treatment, Page 22 > The Local > October 2021

some medicines, poor diet, some skin conditions and scarring. Treatment There is no permanent cure for male/ female pattern baldness or conditions where hair follicles are permanently damaged. Medicines may help and work best if started in the early stages of hair loss. They can slow or stop hair loss and, in some cases, stimulate hair growth. It may be several months before hair regrowth begins and if treatment is stopped, hair loss will continue as before. Medicines for hair loss include: • Minoxidil lotion – available from a pharmacist without a prescription • Finasteride tablets – have a hormone effect that may help some men. Finasteride must be prescribed by a doctor • Spironolactone and cyproterone tablets – have a hormone effect that may help some women. They must be prescribed by a doctor. Wigs, hair transplants or scalp reduction surgery may be options if medicines do not help. Other types of hair loss • In alopecia areata hair may grow back by itself. Some medicines (e.g. corticosteroids, dithranol, minoxidil) may help hair growth. • Fungal scalp infections can be treated with antifungal medicines. • Hair loss due to stress, surgery, pregnancy, medicines, medical conditions or poor diet usually stops once the cause is removed. • Hair lost during cancer treatment usually grows back after treatment is finished. Hair transplants and surgery can reduce the size of bald patches. Wigs and cosmetic treatments such as hair weaving and tinted sprays can hide hair loss. Self care People’s reactions to hair loss are very personal. Some people become very distressed, as hair loss affects their body image and self esteem. Other people are not concerned by hair loss. If you feel distressed, talk to a doctor. • Remember that treatments for hair loss take time to work. • Handle your hair gently. • Remember skin on the scalp is easily sunburned. Always wear a hat when outside, and apply at least SPF 30+ sunscreen to exposed skin. • Be careful to protect your scalp as exposed skin on the scalp is easily damaged. • Learn and use relaxation techniques. • Eat regular, healthy meals, including plenty of fruits, vegetables and wholegrain foods. Limit foods high in fat, sugar or salt. www.thelocalnewcastle.com.au

PHYSIO

Matters with Ben Hutton of Brightside Physio

Three tips to beat a dodgy back

Are you reading this because you have back pain? Or know someone with back pain, or even be worried about getting back pain? Maybe you can’t lift your kids up or swim at the beach or even do a basic gym routine because of back pain. Here’s some quick Brightside tips to help: 1. Don’t panic Back pain is often seen as an incurable lifelong affliction. It doesn’t need to be. Most back pain resolves within 6-8 weeks and most back pain is not related to

‘damage’. It’s more of a warning system telling you it’s feeling overloaded. If you can get some quick and effective strategies from a good physio - there is no reason why you can’t return to your normal family life. 2. Move! (If you can) Old school advice tended to say ‘bed rest is best’ as treatment for back pain. This is flat-out wrong. We know that rest will weaken muscles and stiffen joints and this can make things worse, not better. So move! - change position, go for a walk, do some gentle swimming or Yoga. One caveat - if you’re in the middle of an acute episode (where any movement feels like spasm and horrible pain) you might need 3-5 days of taking it easy. Don’t force movement if its clear your body is saying ‘NO’. 3. Strength > Stretch Stretching is helpful and can make your back feel better but it may not produce long term benefit. You need your scaffolding muscles - bum, tum and back muscles to give you structural support. A good physio will be able to coach you to get these muscles stronger to give you longer term relief. You need strength to lift kids, walk the dog or do a decent work out. To start your journey to a pain-free back - book a consultation today: www.brightsidephysio.com.au

LAW

Matters by Chris Hill-Smith of Appleton Law, Lambton

Powers of Attorney

A general Power of Attorney can be prepared for a variety of reasons. The power conferred can be for a specific function. For example, if a person is going overseas for a time they can appoint someone to act for them in relation to a specific matter. Or, the power may be limited to a particular period of time, perhaps if someone is going into hospital, or interstate. These general types of Powers of Attorney cease if the principal loses capacity. Enduring Powers of Attorney continue even if the principal loses the capacity to make their own decisions and allow the appointed attorney to do anything which the principal could lawfully do.

At Elder Street, Lambton ates ■ Wills and Deceased Est Will Disputes ■ Powers of Attorney ■ ion ■ Criminal Law ■ Probate ■ Family Provis or we Appointments at our office urs -ho -of offer mobile and out appointments to suit you.

It is these types which have come under scrutiny recently with an increasing focus on elder abuse and the mismanagement of an elder’s affairs, resulting in loses for the principal and potentially for the future beneficiaries of the principal’s estate. Generally an attorney is not allowed to benefit personally from the use of the power. Nor may an attorney give a gift of the principal’s property to anyone else, nor authorise another person to obtain a benefit from the principal or their property. If the principal wishes for those things to be permissible, express authority must be given in the instrument. Attorneys must keep accurate accounts of all transactions undertaken using the power. When a power is to be used for dealing with real property, the Power of Attorney must be registered with NSW Land Registry Services and it is also important to note that an attorney is not able to obtain a copy of the principal’s will without express authority. Provisions can be put into place to protect against the abuse of a power. Provisions such as making sure the power cannot be used unless a medical practitioner certifies that the principal has lost the capacity to make their own decisions or, requiring the principal to expressly authorise any transaction undertaken using the power while they still have capacity can limit the opportunities for abuse of the power. If things do go wrong and it is suspected the power is being abused, applications can be made to the Guardianship Tribunal or the Supreme Court of NSW, both of which are able to make a wide range of orders including removal of the attorney, recovery of property and orders to account. MIND

Matters by Dr Stuart Edser

Principal Psychologist at Newcastle Psychology & Health

Depression

Depression is a nasty business. It can take hold of any of us and none of us are immune. The former Premier of Western Australia and the Opposition Leader of NSW both had to resign their jobs due to its effects; so it is certainly not evidence of a weak mind. So what is it? Depression is an aggregation of several symptoms. For a diagnosis, there has to be either a depressed mood (down, sad, blue or flat) or lack of interest in usually happy behaviours (anhedonia) for two weeks or more, plus three or four of the following symptoms: lack of energy, demotivation, short fuse, change in weight or appetite, change in libido, insomnia,

sleepiness, feelings of helplessness, hopelessness or worthlessness, inability to concentrate, woolly thinking, what’s the point thinking, suicidal thinking. This is an awful way to live. For many people, things will improve on their own, often within about three months. However, for others, they may need to seek professional assistance to help them get through it. Traditionally, clinicians talked about reactive depression where there was a specific trigger, and endogenous depression, with no specific trigger and thought generally to be more biologically based and medication the first line of treatment. These days, we tend to talk more about nonmelancholic depression, which would normally be treated with psychological therapy, and melancholic depression, which has all the symptoms of the former, plus psycho-motor disturbance, typically a slowing down, and requiring medication. I liken depression to being lost in a heavily wooded forest that is covered in thick fog with only one track out and I have no idea where it is. A Psychologist can be the Park Ranger who can show you the way and will walk out with you. Depression does respond to good, targeted treatment. Don’t hesitate to get help if you think you might need it.

VET Chat by Dr Fiona Wallace of New Lambton Veterinary Clinic

Steven’s story

Steven is a six year old black and white moggy, a regular loved boarder at the clinic and a bit of a “boy” – large and cuddly and definitely his own man! So we were very worried last month when after a checkup his blood results came back showing acute renal failure. Chronic renal failure is common enough in older cats as they eat a very high protein diet, but in a six year old acute failure raises some questions. A urinary tract infection can cause elevated renal enzymes but Steven’s urine culture came back negative. Certain toxins can cause renal damage, for instance plants including lilies, medications such as ibuprofen, antifreeze, cleaning fluids and pesticides.

There was no history of Steven having had contact with any of these things, but also no antidote to any of them anyway – treatment is mainly based around supportive fluids and encouraging them to eat. After three days of fluids Steven was still not eating. At this point he was sent for ultrasound – he was the right age for lymphoma and we were starting to really worry. The ultrasound including a biopsy were negative (our first bit of good news!) but over this time Steven’s kidneys had been leaking protein and he had become oedematous – there was spongy fluid under his skin where it has leaked from his blood by osmosis. There was just one more trick in the book…a feeding tube sewn via his neck directly into his oesophagus, to replace lost protein and support him until he was well enough to eat again (an uncertain outcome). Steven went home with his feeding tube and his amazing owner fed him blended low protein diet for a fortnight. During that time Steven started to eat himself, and now, several weeks after the feeding tube was removed, he has put on weight and is up to nearly all his old tricks again! We didn’t know Steven’s full story until after his recovery but it is one that brings tears to our eyes. Steven was purchased as a kitten to be a companion for his current owner’s 102 year old mum. He sat with her on her lap and kept her company for two full years. He is a very special boy indeed!
