Many thanks
I’ve said it before but it bears repeating, and repeating often. If it wasn’t for the support of local small businesses The Local would not exist. Without their investment in advertising on these pages we could not pay for the production, printing and distribution of The Local each month. I thank our advertisers directly whenever I get the chance, but I would also like to thank them publicly here. Of course if they didn’t see a return on that investment they would, sooner or later, cease advertising. The return on that investment is you dear reader. Well, what I mean is, you purchasing products or services from them is that return. By engaging their professional services to sell a home, fix a tap or get your prescription made up you are repaying their support of The Local. But of course buying locally is bigger than just supporting your favourite little community newspaper. By spending locally you are supporting local people’s businesses and local people’s jobs. Whether it’s on Elder Street, Alma Road, Beaumont Street, or any of the other areas we serve, your support keeps these shopping precincts alive and vibrant. This Christmas please buy locally wherever and whenever you can. Hardworking local people in local small businesses will appreciate your effort to support them. Thanks once again to our readers, our contributors, our advertisers and our letterbox deliverers for helping The Local to achieve another year of publishing. I look forward to working with you all again in 2024, our 10th year! Wishing everyone a happy and safe Christmas break.

A Christmas message...
Humans are complex. When it comes to Christmas, I think most of us are a bit “Happy Christmas Elf” and a bit “Grinch” – sometimes in the same moment. We know that for some Christmas is a tough time, a time when loneliness and grief can be heightened and when financial stresses detract from the joy. Some of you will know that I have been fighting a recurrence of breast cancer – I am the bald Mum you will see around Lambton. Everyone has a different experience of cancer.
For me it has shown me yet again what an incredible community we live in, and how blessed we are. From the remarkable worldleading researchers, to the care we receive from dedicated nurses, doctors and medical staff, to the natural beauty of the environment that surrounds us. I see so much to be grateful for daily. Christmas and the whole festive season is an opportunity for many to foster gratitude in their lives, and the lives of their family. Gratitude is a way of embracing joy
even while recognising complexity. For many in the community this flows into sharing with those who are doing it tough. I witness this in ways large and small, formal or spontaneous. This giving nourishes both the giver and the recipient. I hope this season you find a way to share with others, and a way to allow yourself to receive kindness from them too.

In August 2021 all calls from payphones to all standard national and mobile numbers were made free. Since then, usage has more than doubled. In the 12-months to June 2023, over 23 million free payphone calls have been made using payphones, including more than 250,000 calls to Triple Zero and other emergency services.

University study seeks over 65s Thinking about what matters to you as you get older, have you made plans for your healthcare, finances and living arrangements? These plans can include making a will and choosing people you trust to help make decisions about managing money or medical care. Having good plans in place brings peace of mind, knowing you are better prepared for major life changes. It also reduces stress and worries for your loved ones. Unfortunately, many people are not as well prepared as they could be. Legal documents made years ago might be outdated; relationships and life circumstances might have changed; values and goals for the future might have shifted. Are you interested in taking stock of your plans for the
future? University researchers are conducting a study on how people plan ahead for medical, financial and other decisions. They are recruiting people aged 65 years and older who live in NSW to take part in the study. The research team – including health researcher Dr Jamie Bryant, University of Newcastle, and Law Professor Nola Ries, University of Technology Sydney - want to learn more about how people prepare for the future and how advance personal planning can be improved, especially in regional communities. “Legally, people have the right to plan for their future and to have their wishes known and respected,” says Professor Ries. “But even when people have done
some planning, the documents can often be improved to better protect their legal rights.” The study, which is funded by the Australian Research Council, will run for 6 months. Participants complete a 20 minute questionnaire at the start of the study and again in 6 months’ time with a $20 giftcard provided at completion. Educational resources on advance planning will also be available to participants. To sign up to to the study go to https://redcap.link/ TakingActionOnAPP A recruitment video with more information can be viewed at www.youtube.com by searching Advanced Personal Planning

With participants from 330 schools across the Hunter and beyond the competition challenges students to complete 35 questions without help from calculators, rulers or other mathematical instruments. In the Year 6 division Jonah Jo from St Philip’s Christian College, Waratah was a joint winner while The Junction Public School’s Samuel Brennan finished in third place. In Year 5 two Newcastle students shared the third place honours, in New Lambton Public School’s Wenhao Wei and Tighes Hill Public School’s Isaac Hood. Newcastle Permanent Chief Distribution Officer Paul Juergens presented major award winners with their prizes in a ceremony at the Newcastle Permanent Centre of Excellence recently, while District Awards were presented at local branches across NSW. “The Hunter region always performs well in this competition and this year was no exception, so I extend my congratulations to the students and their teachers for their fantastic efforts,” Mr Juergens said.

Maria Morrissey with her dogs (L to R) Ian, Billy, Macy and Patches
Maria Morrissey
Maria Morrissey always knew she wanted to spend her golden years doing something special. But the way in which she became a Dog Rescue Newcastle volunteer, when she retired a little over a year ago, was quite serendipitous. Thirteen years earlier, Maria had adopted Billy, a gentle natured Maltese terrier x dachshund, through the same organisation. “I’ve always been interested in animals and when I retired I started volunteering one day a week at the shelter at Fullerton Cove,” she said. “Then they needed someone to hold stores [of donations] this side of town so I put my hand up. I thought, I could do something like that, I’m home a lot. And it grew from there.” Maria’s home in Lambton is the drop-off point in the Newcastle area Page 16 > The Local > December 2023
for all donations of food, beds and flea and tick treatments. And, if you ask some of her fellow volunteers, she’s integral to the whole operation, helping to coordinate foster carers and answer enquiries. As you might guess Maria’s home is full of love and warmth, with four senior dogs of her own, two of whom were ‘foster fails’. Ian is a timid 10-year-old piebald dachshund who had a rough life before Maria fostered him four months ago. “He came from a horrible situation,” Maria said. “A breeder had him in a cage for 10 years; he had no human affection and he wasn’t toilet trained. Now he’s living out his life here.” Patches, an 11-year-old fox terrier, was holed up with 18 other dogs when Maria rescued her. She was just skin and bones with no hair and no teeth. “I couldn’t part with either of them,” Maria said.
Sadly, Ian and Patches’ stories aren’t uncommon. Animals are surrendered to Dog Rescue Newcastle for many reasons, including changes of circumstance, domestic violence and homelessness. Oftentimes rescue dogs don’t wind up in shelters or kennels, they’re taken in by loving foster carers living in average suburban homes— by people like Maria. “It’s challenging but very rewarding,” Maria added. “It’s one of the best things I’ve ever done.” To become a Dog Rescue Newcastle volunteer or foster carer, or to view animals for adoption, visit the website dogrescuenewcastle.com. au or the Dog Rescue Newcastle Facebook page. More foster carers are needed urgently. Contact Maria on 0438 529 727 to organise any donations. --------------------------------------Do you know a local resident whose story you would like to read here? New Lambton quarry tramways
“There are at present no streets that can lay any claim to the name - they are simply cart tracks and foot tracks and when one of these becomes too bad to travel on owners of vehicles simply go and pick out another.” Such was the state of roads in New Lambton in 1886 some 18 years after the town began. The need to improve the streets was a major impetus for formation of New Lambton council and was extensively discussed in their very first general meeting in March 1889. To turn rutted dirt tracks to solid roadways the council
needed gravel, and as they owned no land, they sought assistance from the local collieries. For the roads in the southern half of the town, the New Lambton Land and Coal Company allowed the council to obtain material from their quarry at the top of Addison Road. To transport the gravel down the hill, in 1890 the council constructed a 400-yard tramway down to Evescourt Road. For the roads in the northern half of town, Thomas Croudace, manager of Lambton colliery and mayor of New Lambton, agreed in 1891 for the council to use the company’s quarry in the pit paddock hillside. As before, a tramway was constructed to get material down to the streets. Unsurprisingly, the combination of skips, rails, and a steep incline proved irresistible to local lads. In October 1891 a 13-year-old boy was severely injured when the skip he was riding down the hill left the rails. After the initial construction of roads, the council does not appear to have used the Lambton colliery quarry again. The company sold the land to developers in 1956 and the location of the former quarry is now hidden by housing. In Addison Road the council purchased the quarry in 1896 and continued using it until the 1920s. The land is vacant today, but still has a few reminders of its past use lying amongst the undergrowth. A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
Ebenezer Scrooge is a miserly, unpleasant man who despises Christmas and overworks his clerk Bob Cratchit. As he prepares for another Christmas Eve without celebration, Scrooge is greeted by his dead business partner, Jacob Marley who warns him that his greed will not go unpunished. At first, Scrooge doesn’t heed Marley’s warning, but soon he is visited by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Christmas Yet to Come. He is made to face his cruel nature, and to consider whether he should change his ways. I thought Dickens’s writing was great. It was a joy to read Scrooge, his nephew and Bob Cratchit came to life on the page. I thought each visitation was well written and I loved how Dickens gradually showed Scrooge’s change of heart. The Ghost of Christmas Present was my favourite. I got all teary-eyed when the ghost started to age during the journey with Scrooge. The happy ending was predictable to an extent but Dickens manages to pull it off. My heart lifted right along with Scrooge’s. I get why A Christmas Carol is one of the best known and most loved Christmas tales.. Review by Anon.

HELP with Elaine Abery of Unravelling Red Tape
To wee or not to wee
Dear Here to Help, I spend a lot of time in Islington Park, next to Throsby Creek. It has great facilities – an oval, a playground, covered picnic tables, bbqs, bubblers. But no toilets! Most of the older parks in Newcastle have toilets, but not the newer ones. On the other hand, Lake Macquarie is building new toilet blocks in its parks. Surely, I can’t be the only person who takes the family along for a picnic, use the playground and bubblers, then goes looking for a toilet? It certainly is frustrating, not to mention uncomfortable,
when you need a toilet and can’t find one. The question of whether, and what, public facilities to build, service and maintain, is one for City of Newcastle in its budgeting and forward-planning process. You can contact City of Newcastle to input to decisions that concern you. Council states, on its website, “the provision of public toilets is determined through needs analysis, the propensity for vandalism and the availability of required utilities. Generally public toilets are provided at higher use parks that contain multiple recreational opportunities. Council has over 1000 playgrounds throughout the LGA. Unfortunately, funds are not available to install, maintain and service public toilets for every playground location.” For more information about City of Newcastle parks and facilities, and exactly what is available at each park, here are some helpful links • Public Toilet Map – be aware that some of these are on private property and closed outside business hours • Playgrounds and Parks • Sportsgrounds and Facilities • Find my nearest library, pool, public toilet, cultural point of interest, community or sporting facility, park, parking station, school, hospital, cemetery or even the weather, simply enter your address.

What a PIN! (pain in the neck)
Have you ever woken up one morning and felt like your neck is drawer-off-its-runners stuck? And painful! Like a mini nail gun shooting little miserable nail-bullets every time you move? This may be what’s called Acute Torticollis, or more commonly, a ‘wry neck’. We often get the phone call first thing in the morning, from someone who has woken up with excruciating neck pain, with no obvious cause, other than they may have ‘slept funny’. Except, there’s nothing funny about neck pain.
What and why?
A wry neck is sudden or gradual onset of severe neck pain and stiffness loss of movement. There are two structures that could be involved. 1. Facet joint, the small joints either side of our vertebra, become ‘locked’ causing pain and protective muscle spasm throughout the neck. 2. Changes in the disc, the cushion between each vertebra, which causes inflammation, placing pressure on the stuff around it. This tends to occur more gradually, and symptoms may radiate into the shoulder and arm.
How can we help?
Getting early treatment for a wry neck is the best way of improving symptoms. The aim of physio is to decrease pain and increase movement. Your physio may use a combination of massage, joint mobilisations and exercises to achieve this and symptoms will typically resolve within 5-7 days, however may continue for up to 2 weeks. It’s also important to check the other areas of your spine are moving to assess what might have started the onset of the wry neck. If you don’t treat the cause - chances are you’ll be a regular visitor to the physio! If you’ve woken up with a dodgy neck, call the strongnecked Brightside team for an appointment on 4062 8862 or book online www.brightsidephysio.com.au.

Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is a form of arthritis that damages the cartilage in joints. Finger and weight-bearing joints (knees, hips and spine) are the joints most often affected. It is the most common type of arthritis.
Signs and symptoms
Osteoarthritis usually develops slowly over months or years. The first sign of osteoarthritis is often joint pain during or after physical activity. Some symptoms of osteoarthritis are: • joint pain (cold weather and moving the joint usually make the pain worse) • stiff joints • reduced joint movement (you can’t bend the joint as much as before) • cracking sounds or a grating feeling in the joint • bony lumps around the joint • joint swelling. The symptoms of osteoarthritis vary from person to person. Some people have mild osteoarthritis that does not get worse over time. Other people have severe osteoarthritis, which can make it hard for them to work or carry out normal everyday activities. Pain and disability can make them feel exhausted, anxious and depressed.

may need to make some lifestyle changes and use mechanical aids. Medicines can also help. Some people need joint surgery (e.g. a joint replacement).
Matters
Self care
Joint awareness: Straining or injuring a joint (e.g. during sport or at work) can increase the risk of osteoarthritis in that joint. Proper treatment of injuries and protecting your joints during physical activity can help to limit or avoid osteoarthritis later in life. Regular exercise is an important part of managing osteoarthritis. It can improve your mood, reduce pain and make your joints more flexible. It can also make your muscles, bones and ligaments stronger. Warm water (e.g. a heated pool) can help you move more easily. Ask a doctor, physiotherapist, occupational therapist or Arthritis Australia about suitable exercises. Keep to a healthy weight to limit the load on your weight-bearing joints (e.g. hips and knees). Exercise regularly and have a healthy diet. Eat a variety of vegetables, fruits, wholegrain/ wholemeal foods, protein-rich foods (e.g. nuts, lean meats, fish, eggs, beans) and low-fat dairy foods every day. Limit foods high in fat, sugar or salt.
Medicines
A number of different medicines can help the symptoms of osteoarthritis. A doctor or pharmacist can advise on the best medicines for you, and how and when to use them. Paracetamol is a pain-relieving medicine that can reduce osteoarthritis pain without causing serious side effects. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) (e.g. diclofenac, ibuprofen, naproxen, celecoxib, meloxicam) can reduce pain, joint stiffness and joint swelling. They are available in oral forms (tablets, capsules, mixtures) and topical forms (creams and gels). Some are available without a doctor’s prescription. Oral NSAIDs must be used exactly as directed, to reduce the risk of serious side effects. Opioids (e.g. codeine, tramadol, oxycodone, buprenorphine, fentanyl) are morphine-like pain relievers that can reduce severe pain. They are available as tablets and skin patches. Opioids must be prescribed by a doctor. Corticosteroids are antiinflammatory medicines that can be injected into a joint. They must be prescribed by a doctor. Complementary medicines (e.g. glucosamine, chondroitin) may help some symptoms of osteoarthritis. Liniments, capsaicin cream and heat rubs may help to reduce pain and joint stiffness. www.thelocalnewcastle.com.au

Planning for the future Why is it so important to plan ahead and speak to a
have lost your capacity. An Enduring Power of Attorney does not include medical, health or lifestyle decisions. An Enduring Guardianship is the document that formally appoints a person or persons to make health and lifestyle decisions for you once you can no longer make those decisions for yourself. This may include where you live, what medical or dental treatment you receive or what personal services you receive. An Enduring Power of Attorney and Enduring Guardianship are two different documents used for two different purposes. Without planning ahead and having these documents in place, it may become necessary for your loved ones to involve NSW Trustee & Guardian. Once you have passed away, the Attorney and Guardianship documents become void. Having a valid Will gives you the opportunity to decide who is to be your Executor. It would be your Executor’s responsibility to administer your Estate. Your Will would allow you to decide how and when your Estate assets are to be divided, no matter how big or small your Estate may be. Not having a Will can place unnecessary stress on your loved ones left behind at an already emotional time. Should you pass away without a valid Will, there is no guarantee that your wishes will be carried out. Instead, the laws of intestacy will determine who will inherit your Estate and this may not be to your liking.
Solicitor about your Estate planning needs? Unfortunately, due to illness or accident, you may lose capacity at some stage of your life. Sometimes this illness or accident will be a sudden event and you may not have sufficient time to prepare an Enduring Power of Attorney and Enduring Guardianship beforehand. This could create significant problems for your loved ones. Having these documents in place allows you to nominate the person you wish to act on your behalf in the event that you are unable to manage for yourself. Appointing an Attorney allows that person or persons to assist you in managing your legal and financial affairs. This may include paying bills and managing finances, or even signing a Contract to sell Real Estate.
