Stadium slammed

Sports clubs, community groups, Lambton High School P & C and the local MP have all spoken out recently about a proposal to build a new basketball stadium on Wallarah and Blackley Ovals.

While all parties agree that Newcastle Basketball’s current facilities at Young Rd Broadmeadow are no longer fit for purpose, users of the sports fields at New Lambton are questioning why a new basketball complex should impact their regular use of the ovals on Turton Rd. In December, Member for Wallsend Sonia Hornery MP was critical of the stadium’s proposed location.

While we live mostly in a built-up, urban environment many homes within The Local’s readership are close to or even adjacent to parks and bushland areas.

With the dry, hot, windy weather we had in December we look like having a summer of high bush fire risk.

According to the NSW Rural Fire Service a well prepared home is more likely to survive a bush fire.

Even if your plan is to leave early, the more you prepare your home, the more likely it will survive a bush fire or ember attack.

A well prepared home can also be easier for you or firefighters to defend, and is less likely to put your neighbours’ homes at risk. A well prepared home will also give you more protection if a fire threatens suddenly and you cannot leave.

Here are some basic maintenance tips from the NSW Rural Fire Service to prepare your property • Clean your gutters of leaves and twigs • Install metal gutter guards • Repair damaged or missing tiles on the roof • Install metal mesh screens on windows and doors • Fit seals on doors and windows to eliminate gaps • Enclose any areas under the house • Repair or cover gaps in external walls • Attach a fire sprinkler system to gutters • Keep lawns short and gardens well maintained • Cut back any trees and shrubs overhanging buildings • Clean up fallen leaves, twigs and debris around the property • Have hoses long enough to reach around your house • If you have a pool or tank put a Static Water Supply (SWS) sign on your property entrance, so firefighters know where they can get water if required. www.thelocalnewcastle.com.au

could be carefully explored.

“I will be raising this proposal with the relevant Ministers and calling for a sensible approach that won’t negatively impact so many people and organisations” she added.

In a statement City of Newcastle Executive Manager Community and Recreation Lynn Duffy said that “While construction on a new basketball stadium is not expected to start until 2025, we’re prioritising discussions with local sporting groups to ensure that disruptions to their sporting and recreation needs are minimised.

“We understand that relocating these sporting clubs will require upgrading of other local fields.

“To be very clear, the basketball

project is being managed by the NSW Government, is being funded by the NSW Government, and will be assessed by the NSW Government. Our only role is to ensure that all sporting groups continue to have access to quality sporting facilities. This is not only possible but will happen well before the basketball stadium is built.

Michelle Brown of Lambton Residents Group plans to form an alliance of user groups at Wallarah and Blackley Ovals to ensure their concerns are heard.

Ms Brown has started a Facebook group named ‘Wallarah and Blackley Ovals’ where local residents can share their concerns about the proposed development.

Hurricane season is coming soon Water polo is alive and well in Newcastle. But your local club, the Hunter Hurricanes, need your help.

Based right here in our own backyard at Lambton Park Memorial Swimming Centre, the Hurricanes have supported elite water polo players for over 15 years and are the only water polo club in regional NSW that plays in the national competition.

The Hunter Hurricanes enter a senior male and female team into the Australian Water polo League each year. Junior teams compete in the Australian Youth Championships, the NSW State titles, the Canberra Cup and the under 12s tackle a state festival in Orange each year.

But are they any good? Well, a number of talented local athletes have been selected in squads to represent NSW and Australia at various championships all over the world. This year the Club has had players in Europe, USA, and New Zealand, and even the current Aussie Sharks Captain, Nathan Power, began his career playing water polo here in Newcastle. So you could say they do okay.

To continue providing these pathways and opportunities to local athletes, it is crucial that the Club remains viable.

Like many sports, the fees involved

are beyond sustainable by just parents and player funds.

The Hunter Hurricanes are thankful to the handful of regular sponsors that help with some costs, but they are appealing to local businesses and families for donations.

In the upcoming season the Senior National side will hold 12 or more home games at Lambton, hosting teams from all over Australia.

The Newcastle Men’s Shed mentoring program in conjunction with Callaghan College Wallsend Campus will move into its sixth year in 2024 thanks to the continuing support of the Wests Group and Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group. New pool grandstand opened City of Newcastle splashed out recently with a pool party at Lambton Park War Memorial Swimming Centre to celebrate the completion of the new $2.2 million grandstand.

The concrete structure is capable of hosting 800 people and includes much-needed storage space for operational requirements including equipment for sporting groups, and upgraded accessibility.

It’s the first time the grandstand has been replaced since Lambton Park War Memorial Swimming Centre was officially opened in 1963 by then Lord mayor, Alderman F J Purdue, in memory of those who have served in all conflicts.

Lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes officially opened the new grandstand and shared cupcakes with young swimmers.

“Lambton was City of Newcastle’s first inland pool so we know it holds a special place in the hearts of Novocastrians,” Cr Nelmes said.

Don Smith

Long-term Lambtonian Don Smith epitomises the old adage, ‘where there’s a will, there’s a way.’

Don has retinitis pigmentosa but he hasn’t let his vision impairment stop him from living life to the fullest.

Loyal worshippers at St John the Baptist Anglican Church will recognise Don and his guide dog, Bingo, as one of the church’s resident organists.

Don has been a member of the church since he attended Sunday school as a kindergartener in the early 1950s. He learned to play the organ at age 16 and has been playing for the congregation ever since; during Sunday service, and, Page 16 > The Local > January 2024

in his heyday, at funerals, weddings, and evening mass.

“I love the music and it’s certainly given me an aim in life,” Don said.

“Since I’ve lost my eyesight I can’t read the music, so I have to play by ear. If I don’t know a tune, I’ll download it and learn it that way.”

Playing the organ is a family affair, with Don’s wife Naomi and their son Greg both playing at St John the Evangelist, just over the hill.

“It’s nothing to see the three of us sitting down and choosing hymns together,” Don smiled.

“Our place is full of music sometimes, you’ve got to fight to get a seat or wait your turn.”

Don is a fountain of knowledge on the area, residing atop the old pit paddock of the former Lambton colliery. When they married, he and Naomi bought a house at Wallsend on the last street in the parish.

They eventually moved back to

Lambton to be closer to the church and their community, where Don is also a charter member of the Lions Club of Mayfield/Waratah Blind & Vision Impaired and an organist at several Masonic Lodges.

Don hasn’t let his vision impairment stop him from being an avid reader of The Local, either. He uses a machine, which photocopies each page then reads them aloud to him so he can devour the local paper from cover to cover.

Unsurprisingly, his favourite section is Lachlan Wetherall’s monthly local history article.

“I love reading his articles; also the other articles about people in the area,” Don said.

“You mean people like you, Don,” this reporter added.

New Lambton’s steam lorry

When you’re in a time of technological change, it’s hard to know which innovations will last, and which will fade away. That’s a problem New Lambton council faced 100 years ago, when they moved to mechanised transport.

In August 1923 the council decided to sell their horses and drays and purchase a steam powered “Super Sentinel” lorry. Manufactured in Shrewsbury, England, the lorry was sent by ship to Sydney for

Sentinel steam lorry purchased by the council for £1400 was given a very successful trial on Saturday afternoon, in the presence of the aldermen of the municipality and several visiting aldermen. The machine was driven by Mr. C. J. Robinson, and the various steep grades were easily negotiated with a 6-ton load of gravel.”

Despite the glowing appraisal of this new technology, reality did not measure up to expectation. The following year breakdowns regularly kept the lorry out of action. At a fiery council meeting in October 1925, some blamed the driver for operating the truck inappropriately. With continuing breakdowns, a motion was tabled in March 1926 to dispose of the lorry. The motion was defeated, but soon afterwards council decided to supplement the troubled steam machine by purchasing a petrol lorry, the first of many more to come.

The “Super Sentinel” continued to be used until the amalgamation of suburban councils into Greater Newcastle Council in 1938. In June 1941 Newcastle council briefly brought the steam lorry back into service to assist the effort to conserve petrol supplies during the war. When war-time rationing ended, the age of steam powered road transport was soon over, and petrol and diesel power has dominated to this day.

Dear Here to Help, There was a classified ad in The Local recently by a man saying he “is not a voluntary transactor in commerce” and seeking to “sever Usufruct Subjugation ties with the Australia Corporation in its entirety.” and instructing it to “cease and desist misaddressing [him] in fraudulent debased dog-latin; Glossa.”

What on earth does this mean?

Presumably, he doesn’t want to pay tax.

What if he needs Medicare, roads, a hospital or other services? What if he commits a crime?

Thanks for your question.

When I worked in government, sometimes we received similar letters. They usually came in waves and used the same words, with their own names and addresses inserted.

Over the years, there have been numerous people and groups who say they no longer want to be part of Australia. Every person or group has their own reasons, but it usually boils down to money.

If they commit a crime, the police will investigate them like anyone else, ignoring their claims of independence from Australia. There is no reliable data on whether they still use taxpayer-funded initiatives, such as Medicare.

There are also people who give themselves titles that don’t exist and/or form groups that claim to have some form of authority, none of which is collaborated by any recognised institution.

Just remember “if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.” Always conduct your own independent research before you accept what anyone says as true or give them money.

When there’s no will

When a person dies without a will their estate is dealt with under the intestacy laws.

The existence of either a spouse or spouses or ‘issue’ (children) of the deceased person has the effect that all other classes of relatives are excluded from entitlement to the estate.

A ‘spouse’ may be a person who was married to the deceased person immediately before their death or, a person who was in a de facto relationship with the deceased person immediately before their death and the relationship was either in existence for at least two years, or a child resulted from the relationship. A person can of course have more than one spouse and in that situation generally the spouse’s entitlement is shared.

The children who are entitled under the intestacy laws are the ‘issue’ of the deceased person. That is descendants only, children, grandchildren etc. ‘Issue’ does not include step children or children related only by affinity.

In the situation where a spouse and issue of the deceased survive the deceased, the distribution of the assets depends firstly on whether there are one or more spouses, and secondly on whether the surviving children of the deceased are also children of the spouse/s.

The common situation of blended families these days obviously means that the estate of the deceased would very often not dealt with as the deceased would have wished had he or she documented their wishes in a will.

If there is no surviving spouse or children of the deceased the estate is distributed through a prioritised order of relatives starting with the deceased’s parents and continuing to more remote classes of relatives such as brothers and sisters, grandparents and aunts and uncles. The existence of a particular class of relatives excludes more remote classes from any entitlement.

If a person in an eligible class has already died but leaves a child, that child or children will take the share that their parent would have and the more remote classes of relatives are excluded.

If there are no persons of the defined classes of relatives surviving the deceased, the state takes the whole of the estate.

Gout

Gout is a common and very painful type of arthritis. It occurs when uric acid crystals form in and around a joint. It mainly affects men over 40 years of age. Gout can usually be well controlled with medicines and changes to diet. Uric acid (urate) is one of the body’s waste products. If uric acid builds up in the bloodstream, it can settle in and around joints as crystals. Uric acid crystals can irritate the joint, causing inflammation (swelling) and pain. People who get gout usually have a high level of uric acid in their blood.

Gout most often begins in the big toe joint, but it may spread to more joints. It can affect foot, ankle, knee, hand, wrist and elbow joints.

Signs and symptoms

A gout attack usually comes on suddenly, often overnight.

Common symptoms are: • joint inflammation, with swelling, redness and heat • a very tender and painful joint, which is sensitive to touch.

Sometimes even the weight of a bed sheet can cause severe pain. If a fever is also present, it is important to get medical advice as soon as possible. Without treatment, a gout attack usually lasts about one week. After the first gout attack, more attacks are likely to occur. If not managed correctly, the time between attacks may get shorter, attacks may last longer and more joints may be affected. Repeated gout attacks can permanently damage joints, and may also lead to the formation of kidney stones.

Risk factors

Some people are more likely to get gout than others. Factors that may play a role in causing gout include: • a family history of gout • drinking too much alcohol, particularly beer • being overweight or overeating • joint injury or surgery • some medical conditions (e.g. high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, kidney disease) • some medicines (e.g. fluid tablets, cancer chemotherapy) • crash dieting or fasting • not drinking enough fluids • eating foods that increase uric acid in the blood.

blood. Some of these foods have been linked to gout attacks.

They include meat, especially red meat and offal (e.g. liver, kidneys, heart), seafood, especially shellfish, scallops, mussels, sardines, herrings, mackerel, anchovies and foods containing yeast (e.g. beer, Vegemite).

Medicines

There are two types of gout medicine – ‘gout reliever’ medicines to relieve attacks and ‘gout preventer’ medicines to prevent attacks. Medicines that reduce pain and swelling are used to relieve gout attacks. ‘Gout reliever’ medicines should be started at the first sign of symptoms and taken until the attack has settled, or for as long as directed by your doctor. Medicines that can relieve gout attacks include: anti-inflammatory pain relievers (e.g. diclofenac, ibuprofen, indomethacin), colchicine and corticosteroids (e.g. prednisolone, prednisone). Aspirin should not be used for pain relief during a gout attack, as the doses needed for pain relief can increase the uric acid level in blood. Lowdose aspirin can usually be continued.

Preventing attacks

Gout preventer medicines help to prevent gout attacks by lowering uric acid blood levels.

• Allopurinol is the medicine most often prescribed by doctors to prevent gout. Probenecid is sometimes used instead.

• A ‘gout preventer’ must be taken every day, whether or not you have symptoms and should be continued during a gout attack.

• A ‘gout preventer’ will not relieve the symptoms of a gout attack. If ‘preventer’ treatment is started during an attack, it can make gout symptoms worse. Treatment with a ‘gout preventer’ usually starts after gout symptoms have settled.

• Gout attacks may continue for a few months after starting a ‘gout preventer’. Your doctor may advise you to also take a ‘gout reliever’ medicine during this time.

• Treatment with a ‘gout preventer’ is usually lifelong.

Self care

A gout attack can often be self-managed. To help reduce pain caused by an attack: • start a ‘gout reliever’ medicine at the first sign of a gout attack. Ask a doctor or your Piggott’s Pharmacist for advice.

• hold an ice pack against the inflamed joint to ease pain until medicines start to work.

• Limit alcohol to no two standard drinks a day.

• Drink enough water every day to satisfy your thirst and to keep your urine ‘light-coloured’ (unless a doctor advises you not to).

• Have a healthy diet. Eat a variety of vegetables, fruits, wholegrain/ wholemeal foods, protein-rich foods (e.g. nuts, lean meats, fish, eggs, beans) and low-fat dairy foods every day. Limit foods high in fat, sugar or salt.

• Limit or avoid foods that trigger your gout.
