Phil’s lifetime award • Issue No 99 • Newcastle’s favourite community newspaper • July 2022

Former long time Lambton resident, entertainer, promoter and mentor to young musical artists, Phil Mahoney, received a lifetime achievement award for his services to country music recently. On hearing that he had been given the award at the Dusty Boots Festival in Narromine, Phil said “I am very proud to receive the TC Brown Award....I’ve enjoyed being part of the country music industry and meeting many friendly and talented people. I’ve particularly enjoyed helping country performers get their first start in the industry by organising bookings and passing on advice I’ve learnt from many of the biggest country stars”. Phil’s biography Try a Little Kindness, released in 2021, with all sales going to Camp Quality, tells his life story. The book is available for sale at www. philmahoney.com.au

Super savers

According to the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia, in March this year, we collectively had $3.4 trillion invested in superannuation. Yeah, I wasn’t sure how much that was either. I looked it up to save you the trouble. It’s a 3 then a 4 followed by 11 zeros! Given recent headlines about sharemarkets both here and overseas heading in a southerly direction lately, I’d hazard a guess that we have a little less right now. Nevertheless it’s still a very large sum of money we have saved up for our retirements. It’s hard to argue with the view of many, that compulsory superannuation, introduced 30 years ago now, was one of the most far-sighted and nationbuilding achievements of any Australian government ever. Over the next few weeks and months those of working age, and many already in their retirement years, will receive the obligatory annual communication from their super fund(s). I read recently that 16% of us check our super balance once a year or less. Another 10% never check their balance! Many of those who do open and read this correspondence will find that their balance at 30 June this year was less that it was 12 months ago. But fear not. Experts say we shouldn’t panic and go fiddling with the settings on our super just because we experience a negative return in a particular year. History (apparently) tells us that holding our nerve will pay off in the long run. There’s no need to move your balance from a ‘growth’ setting to a conservative ‘cash’ setting. Over the medium to long term the markets have always exceeded their previous high point. They say it’s “time in the market” not “timing the market” that is the secret to success. And keep fingers crossed. www.thelocalnewcastle.com.au

SpongeBob at YPT in Hamilton Opening in the July School Holidays, Young People’s Theatre (YPT) is thrilled to be presenting, for the first time in Newcastle, The SpongeBob Musical. Based on the hit Nickelodeon cartoon, this bubble-filled production follows the adventures of SpongeBob, Patrick, Sandy and Squidward on their mission to save the town of Bikini Bottom and have the ‘best day ever!’ The production is directed by Maddie Watts, previously known for her work on YPT’s Children of Eden JR and The Addams Family Young at Part. Maddie is accompanied by Alexandra Rigby as musical director, Chelsea Willis as co-choreographer and assistant director and Tahlia Smith as co-choreographer. The team is assisted by Clara Barcan, Brianna Budden and Natesha Ham. The SpongeBob Musical is not just for kids, but a thoughtful and fun musical for all ages. The well known SpongeBob characters are transformed into three-dimensional beings who teach us to consider our flaws the very thing others see as our best traits. “Ultimately, I think the message The SpongeBob Musical shares is about our society learning to be better. This production brings the message back to a base level and says ‘Hey

Some of the talented young cast of The SpongeBob Musical presented by Young People’s Theatre this month. Photo: Riley McLean it’s that simple’ we just need to accept each other and be nice to people” said Maddie Watts. This musical mash-up features songs from famous artists such as Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, Panic! At the Disco, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, David Bowie and many more. This creative blend of musical styles allows our production to be expressive and innovative, featuring a plethora of contrasting dance genres and staging opportunities in this full-length contemporary musical. The SpongeBob Musical runs from 5

July to 6 August at YPT Theatre in Hamilton and includes weekend and school holiday performances. Tickets are available online at: https://ypt.org.au/bookings/ or call the box office on 4961 4895 from 10:30am weekdays or 8:30am Saturdays. The Local has one double pass to The SpongeBob Musical to give away to a lucky reader. Free CPR and AED training Did you know that 30,000 people die annually in Australia due to sudden cardiac arrest? Would you know how to assist someone if they suffered a cardiac arrest while out in the community? On Monday 18 July Hunter Heart Safe is presenting a free training session for interested community members on how to perform hands only CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and use an AED (Automated External Defribrillator). Hunter Heart Safe was founded in 2019, the name deriving from the concept of a ‘heart safe community’, a population where there are enough communitybased people who know how to do CPR and use an AED. “Community bystanders are more likely to start CPR if they don’t have to do mouth to mouth,” says

Shaun. “For someone who has a sudden cardiac arrest in the community, immediate CPR from a bystander and the use of an AED, can increase their survival rate fivefold.” The one hour training session will be held at Club Lambton at 5.30pm

Monday 18 July. If you would like to attend this free training session please email your name and contact phone number to lambtonresidents@gmail.com/ All community members are welcome to attend.

Social housing fast-tracked

A $12 million social housing funding agreement between the City of Newcastle and NSW Land and Housing Corporation was endorsed by Council in late May. The agreement sets out a commitment from the NSW Government to match City of Newcastle’s contribution of approximately $2 million annually for the next three years. The funds will be invested in the delivery of new social and affordable housing in Newcastle, in priority locations such as Wallsend.

Newcastle lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the endorsement by councillors is a significant step towards fast tracking social and affordable housing outcomes for people in Newcastle, while also supporting investment and jobs growth.

“With over 10,000 families suffering from housing stress across the city, housing affordability in Newcastle is close to crisis point, which is why this issue is a priority of the Newcastle 2040 Community Strategic Plan and the Newcastle Local Housing Strategy 2020,” Cr Nelmes said. “Affordably priced housing plays a critical role in the health and wellbeing of people and their families, and social housing provides an important safety net for the community.” NSW Minister for Planning and Minister for Homes Anthony Roberts said the agreement would deliver positive social and affordable housing outcomes for the people of Newcastle.

$

“We’re thrilled to be working with the City of Newcastle to address housing supply and affordability, and we hope this investment will encourage more of our local government partners to do the same. Research by City of Newcastle shows that one in three people don’t believe there are enough diverse housing options for everyone across the city, and one quarter of people don’t believe they can afford a reasonable standard of housing in the area. “The NSW Land and Housing Corporation (LAHC) owns 4,300 social housing dwellings across the Newcastle LGA, and City of Newcastle is working in close partnership with LAHC to fast-track projects such as the renewal of existing properties in Waratah West and Wallsend,” “Construction has already commenced on the redevelopment of two ageing homes on Landa Parade Waratah West that will be transformed into a low-rise, accessible building that features six two-bedroom units and four one-bedroom units for up to 16 residents. Cr Nelmes said. To advertise in The Local call Mark on 0455 210 000

Bee Varroa careful The NSW Government is urging beekeepers across the state to safeguard their industry after biosecurity surveillance detected Varroa mite in hives at the Port of Newcastle. Agriculture Minister Dugald Saunders says swift measures are being taken to contain the disease, which is the most serious pest for honey bees worldwide. “We have immediately launched an eradication plan which involved setting up a biosecurity zone, containing the infected hives and euthanising the bees,” Mr Saunders said. “Australia is the only major honey producing country free from Varroa mite and if it has the chance to establish here, it could cost the honey industry more than $70 million a year. The Biosecurity Zone covers an area within a 50 kilometre radius of the Port of Newcastle. Beekeepers within this zone must not move or tamper with their hives. They must also notify the NSW Department of Primary Industries with the location of all of their hives.

“Biosecurity is one of my top priorities and beekeepers have been working with the Government through the National Bee Pest Surveillance Program to act as an early warning system,” Mr Saunders said. “If it weren’t for their diligence in monitoring hives and catch boxes at strategic locations around our ports and airports, this threat may have gone undetected.” The mites are tiny reddish-brown parasites and are easily identifiable to the naked eye. If you have bee hives located within the biosecurity zone please notify DPI of their location by calling 1800 084 881 or completing the form on this website: https://forms.bfs.dpi.nsw.gov.au/forms/9247

Blackbutt upgrade progresses A new footpath connecting Blackbutt Village in New Lambton to Blackbutt’s Richley Reserve along Freyberg Street has been completed as part of a $3.7 million upgrade of the popular local centre. Newcastle lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes said this connection is a first step in delivering a safer, more attractive place for visitors and locals to spend time. “It’s great to see improved accessibility for the community linking these two important locations,” Cr Nelmes said. “The addition of over 30 street trees along Freyberg Street also creates a more appealing environment with increased shade and colour, with more trees being introduced along Dunkley Avenue in the coming weeks. “Our staff are preparing to commence upgrades to stormwater infrastructure and road surfaces in the western car park area in the next few weeks, as well as seeking community feedback on timed parking options across the broader local centre area. “When we spoke to the community during the development of this upgrade we heard concerns about pedestrian safety, and also the

Lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes tree planting on Freyberg Street New Lambton with City of Newcastle project team members availability of short-term parking for visiting the shops and local services. “We look forward to hearing community views on the range of timed parking options which were developed in consultation with local businesses during a workshop held with them earlier this year.”

Lambton The

Construction is scheduled for overall completion in early 2024. The upgrade has been supported with a $591,677 grant from the NSW Government under Round Seven of the Resources for Regions program.

New Lambton Fire Station

This month marks 125 years since New Lambton Fire Station was opened in 1897. The formation of a fire brigade, nearly thirty years after the suburb was established, was prompted in part by suburban rivalry. When Lambton fire brigade asked New Lambton council in 1896 to install a hydrant for their use, the council politely declined, deciding instead to form their own brigade. They applied to the state government and received a grant of £100 and a block of land on Alma Rd to build a

station, which was opened on 17 July 1897. Constructed by Henry Burg, the station consisted of a shed 18 feet by 35 feet with two large sliding doors at the front and a meeting room at the rear. Perched on top was a bell tower with a lookout platform 26 feet above ground. In the pre-telephone area, ringing the bell would summon volunteer firefighters to the station, to then take their horse drawn hose reel carriage to the location of the fire. The brigade was first called out in October 1897, to assist at a chimney fire in Adamstown. The Newcastle Morning Herald praised their response noting that “in connection with the alarm the newly inaugurated New Lambton Fire Brigade did a smart run. Ten minutes after the alarm was given at Adamstown station the New Lambton firemen had their fire extinguishing appliances upon the scene.” Thankfully the early days of the brigade were mostly uneventful. In 1898 the fire bell rang on only eight occasions, five of those a false alarm. A telephone service was connected to the station in 1912, and in 1925 the brigade received its first motorised fire engine. In 1934 a new brick fire station was erected in place of the original wooden building. This building still stands today but ceased operations when the new Lambton Fire Station in Young Road opened in 2016. You can view these photos and more details at lachlanwetherall.com

Here to

HELP with Elaine Abery of Unravelling Red Tape

Rights and responsibilities

Dear Here to Help, Recently, my 86yo dad rang the ambulance on a Friday night. When the ambulance arrived, the paramedics suggested that he should not go to hospital, but should wait until Monday to see his GP. The paramedics said Dad was likely to wait a long time in hospital, and there was a risk he could catch the flu or covid in the waiting room. How is this okay? Why did Dad have to wait till Monday? Surely, government should do something about this situation, so that Dad can go to hospital when he needs to, rather than wait till Monday to see his GP! Thank you for your query. This example is about the difficult interaction between social (government) and individual responsibility. The easiest way to think about this is that government cannot be responsible for everything in our lives. It would be expensive and intrude into our personal decision-making and freedoms. From a public policy perspective, there is a fine balance between facilitating people and businesses doing things that help advance our society and curbing behaviour

that harms our society. There is a lot of behaviour and actions that fall in the middle – so what do we do about these things? One of the hardest things to do in government decisionmaking is remove something from people. Even if people do not use that thing, or do not realise they have access to that thing, they do not want to lose possible access to that thing. It’s a tricky area, particularly in healthcare. In some cases, the best decision for the community as a whole may seem counterintuitive, or even create difficulties for some people. Let’s look at some healthcare examples… Statistics show that some hospitals or healthcare practitioners have higher incidences of poor health outcomes than others. People who know the system generally try and avoid those hospitals or practitioners for themselves or their loved ones. However, in the words of Sir Humphrey (Yes Minister), it would be a very brave decision for any government to close, temporarily or permanently, that hospital. So, how do we help this hospital, and its employees, deliver better health outcomes to the community, without reducing services in the meantime, or diverting resources from other hospitals? It’s tricky. Your ambulance/emergency department query is another example. Like all other services, hospitals have limited space and staffing. There are some questions to ask before we proceed. Is it an emergency? Is it reasonable for everyone’s after hours medical issues to be addressed in hospitals? What is an emergency? Data shows that people ring the ambulance for things such as a “lost engagement ring”, hiccups and even lost acrylic fingernails. What are the risks of having generally healthy people in a hospital environment, for example hospital-acquired infections? Where are you most likely to obtain the best and most holistic treatment for your healthcare concerns? The right diagnosis

was puzzling, but I liked the challenge. I did an assessment of Jenny’s knee and everything seemed in order. No specific pain, just a dull aching that I couldn’t reproduce with any movement. She’d even brought along some x-rays of her knee which reported no abnormalities. I looked at her, puzzled. “Has anyone ever had a look at your hip?” I asked her. “My hip?” she queried, “Honey I don’t know if you’ve been listening for this last half hour, but it’s my knee that’s hurting, my hip has never given me grief in my life”.

“I know”, I said, “but just to be thorough, let’s take a look at it”. I brought her hip up into the position that I know is bound to provoke an irritated hip, and… “AH!” “I’ve been to three different healthcare providers and Jenny jumped. none of them have been able to fix my problem. I just want to be able to walk my dog. You’re my last resort.” “That was it!”

After some further investigation, it turned out that Jenny’s knee pain was a result of hip osteoarthritis. Bodies are a bit weird like that, pain in one spot can often be a result of an issue in an entirely different one. Once I knew what the issue was, I was able to prescribe It’s always a bit intimidating when a patient tells you Jenny the right exercises for her problem, and she’s now they’ve seen several other providers because it really back to walking, furry friend in tow. narrows down the list of things you can try. MIND

Matters by Dr Stuart Edser

Principal Psychologist at Newcastle Psychology & Health

Values

A very important emphasis in counselling psychology today is the focus on values. It is common now for a therapist to take a client through a process of identifying his or her values and exploring how much the client is living by them. What are values? Well, for a start, they are not the same thing as goals. A goal is a one-off thing that can be ticked off as completed once achieved. You have a goal to visit Dubbo zoo. You go there. Tick.

Goal achieved. You have a goal to shed four kilos. You lose them. Tick. Goal achieved. But a value is something that goes on and on. It’s not a one-off. A value might be not just to visit the zoo, but to live life fully on weekends. A value might be not just to shed four kilos, but to eat and move well to stay healthy. These are not just achieved once, but go on indefinitely. Many of our values come from our parents from the time of our childhood and remain helpful. However, it is not uncommon for adults to adjust or even discard some of those childhood values as not being appropriate or workable in adult life. Sometimes this occurs after a crisis, sometimes as an act of personal growth. Other values arrive during our adolescence and youth and we often take them into our adult lives. So why this focus? Well, generally speaking, people live happier lives when living from their values. Life is less of a struggle and seems to run more smoothly, be more integrated and is often less stressful. We tend to find life more fulfilling and are able to cope better with life’s challenges when we live in concert with our values. Worth a thought.

PARENTING

Matters with Mel Burgess of Love Parenting

Sharing the household load

*Penny arrived to her Parenting Reset day visibly frazzled. She used whatever energy she still had left to force a smile before flopping down heavily on Love Parenting Studio’s new and particularly snazzy green velvet lounge. There was an audible sigh that told me she was physically here, but the rest of her was still arriving. I handed her a lime to scratch and sniff while she caught her breath. I poured our tea. She scratched and sniffed the lime and then looked slowly around the studio. After paying particular attention to

the lush hanging plants she commented “Gee it’s nice in here.” The distance between her shoulders and earlobes already looked more spacious. Across our time working together we explored what Penny is responsible for doing in a day. Starting with what she had already done in the hours before arriving here for our 9:15am start. Alot. Working through Love Parenting’s ‘Sharing the Household Load’ activity allowed Penny to see how things had gotten to crisis point. *Penny and *Dan had gone from five years ago being child-free and barely having two life-admin tasks to rub together, to flailing in a deluge of them. From years of after-work socialising and ducking away for fabulous local and overseas trips, to counting showering alone or a solo trip to the supermarket as ‘me-time’. As romantic partners they were finding themselves less and less likely to make it to the end of the day with energy left for anything coupley. Particularly *Penny…… **This is the beginning of a blog that goes on to detail what contributed to *Penny and *Dave finding themselves in such funk, how we turned that ship around, and what the positive flow-ons were for them once they rejigged. www.loveparenting.com.au/blog If you can relate and want to be guided through to easier times too, then link in and let’s get that show on the road.

LAW

Matters by Chris Hill-Smith of Appleton Law, Lambton

Who are ‘children’ for the purposes of a Will?

When a will is written, it is common to make gifts to the will maker’s children as beneficiaries. A gift ‘to my children’ is a class gift and all persons who fall within the class at the date of your death will take a share of the gift, including children born after the date of the will. It is important to remember that a class gift to your ‘children’ includes all of your children, biological, adopted or ex-nuptial. However step children and foster children would not usually be included in a class gift to ‘children’ and therefore if it is intended that foster

or step children are included, there needs to specific provision for that to happen. You are able to name your children specifically in your will and that will exclude any children not named, but if you later have more children, they too will be excluded. Under legislation an adopted child becomes the child of the adopting parents and ceases to be the child of their natural parents. The inheritance rights of the adopted child in regard to their natural parents also terminate. A gift to my children includes all children living at the date of death of the mother, including a child or children not yet born but who subsequently survive, generally for 30 days which is the statutory survival requirement. Children born through artificial or reproductive technology are treated as the natural children of the parents under the NSW Status of Children Act. Other types of class gifts may also be included in a will and the timing of the closure of the class will determine exactly who will take the gift or share in the gift. It is important to discuss the above matters when having your will drafted to ensure that your will reflects your personal circumstances and sets out your testamentary wishes accurately.
