Trauma teddies to rescue

Lambton’s Red Cross Trauma Teddies knitting group has produced many thousands of cuddly bears over many years.

But they need more help to continue their great work.

Trauma Teddies provide care in so many ways. They have comforted children fleeing bushfires; they have been a warm welcome to refugee children; a friendly security in hospital; and a happy face in lonely times.

Standing 32cm tall Trauma Teddies are lovingly handknitted using the trademarked Red Cross pattern.

They must pass a quality control test to guarantee comfort and safety. continued on page 5

Eight days a week As well as publishing The Local over the last eight years I have held down another job.

Putting aside the reality of feeding and housing my family, that second job has kept me and, I suspect the rest of the household, sane.

You see, I’m something of a tinkerer. I can be at the computer, playing around at the ‘edges’ of The Local, and making little measurable progress for literally days on end.

When it came down to producing a small hyper-local community newspaper every month I learnt very early on that The Local has this uncanny knack of expanding to occupy every available moment that I allow it.

The Local would effortlessly take up an eighth day of the week, and a ninth, if that change was ever legislated. It wouldn’t necessarily be an improved community newspaper. From a readers’ perspective it would be the same imperfect community newspaper.

It would simply take me longer to produce.

Having another job that I must go to has proven itself to be the best way to quarantine at least some hours in the week that I simply cannot work on The Local.

Many times over the last eight years years I’ve accepted extra work shifts at short notice just so that I have to step away from The Local for a day.

I’m not complaining. The Local has taught me many lessons about how I ‘tick’. Lessons that I don’t think I would have had working for someone else.

Trauma Teddies (cont. from front page)

Trauma Teddies co-ordinator for the Hunter Dianne Hellyer said that demand has never been greater than it is at present.

“We recently sent 100 Trauma Teddies to the northern rivers areas. So many families have been devastated by the floods. We hope our little friends can make a difference to kids who’ve lost everything.” Dianne told The Local.

“We provide Trauma Teddies to Police, Fire and Ambulance services, Newcastle Private and Lingard Private Hospitals, as well as Laverty and Douglas Hanly Moir Pathology services.” she added.

“Volunteers of all ages and knitting abilities are welcome.

We can provide on-the-job training in all aspects of Trauma Teddy construction. So don’t feel like you need to be a first-class knitter to make a contribution.”

“We currently have around 25 knitters in the Lambton group. But the more the merrier” Dianne said.

Across the nation there are about 75 groups hand knitting the Teddies. They lovingly craft around 50,000 Trauma Teddies each year.

More than 40 free night-time events will be delivered across the Newcastle city centre from now until 21 May, to encourage the community to experience the cultural, retail and hospitality heart of the city.

Coordinated by City of Newcastle under the banner, ‘Autumn Alive’, the eclectic mix of events has received funding support of more than $500,000 from the NSW Government’s CBDs Revitalisation Program, in response to the impact of the pandemic on the hospitality, event and arts and culture sectors.

Alice ignites curiosity and wonder

A trip to Newcastle Museum has become curiouser and curiouser with the latest exhibition taking visitors down the rabbit hole to explore science concepts with the help of Alice in Wonderland.

The children’s literary classic has been transformed into a colourful, hands-on experience designed to introduce children to everything from optical illusions and word play to physics, time telling and maths.

Newcastle Councillor Elizabeth Adamczyk said Alice’s Wonderland - A Most Curious Adventure provides parents with the perfect mix of education and entertainment to keep their kids enthralled.

“The wondrously bizarre and sometimes illogical story of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is the ideal inspiration for a playful exhibition that will ignite the natural curiosity of young children while also introducing them to a range of numeracy, literacy and science concepts,” Cr Adamczyk said.

“This exhibition provides a fantastic option for parents looking for a fun, low-cost activity for toddlers and junior primary school aged children.”

Regulatory failure Public policy describes government decisions. Like most processes, it comes with its own particular terminology. I have discussed some of this terminology in previous columns.

Today, let’s discuss “regulatory failure”, another public policy term. Regulatory failure admits that government gets its decisions wrong sometimes.

Let’s start by exploring some of the reasons for “regulatory failure” or government getting it wrong.

Sometimes, government decisions are poorly informed. This may be because government is provided with incorrect information by people seeking a particular outcome. Government may also make incorrect assumptions, for example assuming that small businesses easily use software that is complex and difficult.

Sometimes, something that seems obvious turns out to be not obvious. For example, for someone designing transport in a capital city, it may seem obvious that many people use public transport to travel to work –

but most people don’t use public transport in regional centres.

Sometimes, there are practical interactions with other government decisions that were not expected.

Those decisions might be made by a different part of government without realising the interactions. For example, tax agents are encouraged by government to ensure their clients only use certain accounting software – makes sense, right? Because no tax agent can be across all the foibles and fixes for all the various accounting software packages. But on the other hand, government encourages taxpayers to choose from a “diverse” offering of accounting software. Clearly, the one government decision inhibits the other.

And sometimes, the world moves on. There was a time when government required certain information to be posted to clients. The intention was for clients to be able to make fully informed decisions. Times have changed and many people prefer electronic communications (and don’t read past the first few lines of complex information). When laws were changed to allow government agencies to communicate electronically, some businesses were still required to post letters to clients. Given just how many government laws there are, I suspect that some were just forgotten or left out.

There are all sorts of reasons why government gets its decisions wrong. These are just some examples. This is known as regulatory failure.

Government is not perfect. It makes mistakes.

Government knows that it gets things wrong.

Generally speaking, government wants its decisions to work as well as possible for as many people as possible.

Robinson’s Farm, Orchardtown

Dairy farms, market gardens, orchards and vineyards are scattered throughout the Hunter Valley today. But at one time, all these agricultural activities were also taking place in New Lambton, on farms such as that run by the Robinson family.

John Robinson was born 1846 in Durham UK. His father was a coal miner, and at age 16 John was working as a pony driver at a colliery. He married in 1872 and emigrated to Australia in 1879 with his wife Dorothy and their children. After arriving in New Lambton the Robinsons lived in Alma Rd adjacent to the fire station, with John probably working in the local collieries.

The New Lambton Coal Company, after extracting the payable coal from their lease, looked to profit from selling and leasing their land above ground. In October 1892 The Newcastle Morning Herald and Miners’ Advocate reported that “a large extent of splendidlysheltered and good land in New Lambton has lately been surveyed and laid out in five-acre allotments for fruit orchards or market gardens.” The twenty allotments, to the south of Queens Rd, were offered for lease on a 21 year term with an option to purchase.

John Robinson took this opportunity for a change in occupation. He obtained a lease on four of the allotments on the hillside to the west of Orchardtown Road, and pursued a number of farming endeavours such as dairy cows, bee keeping, vegetable gardens, an orchard, and even a small vineyard.

In 1913, when the original 21 years leases expired, the Orchardtown allotments began to be sold off. From 1919 housing subdivisions commenced, and then accelerated particularly in the 1940s. By 1951 all of the original twenty allotments had been replaced with houses, shops, parks and sporting fields. Today there is but one remnant of Orchardtown’s agricultural past, that being the name of the main road that traverses the former farmland.

The novel then describes Shuggie’s childhood, growing up amidst poverty, an alcoholic mother and bullying from his peers. During Thatcher’s leadership and the closure of the mines, the city is changing and the working-class are struggling to adapt.

One of my favourite early scenes of the book is in Shuggie’s living room of his 17th floor council-flat where we meet three generations of women - his grandmother, mother and teenage sister who are sitting with other women from the high-rises. One of the women had got a hold of a box of ‘fancy’ bras, from the back of a lorry, and all the women peel down their dresses, sit around in these bras, smoking, drinking their warm lager from coffee mugs, playing cards, complaining about their ‘weans’ and their men and poring over the ‘catalogue’ from which ‘Big Nan’ takes orders of items, on loan, the women really can’t afford.

This book is beautifully written with precise attention to detail. I loved the language - the Glaswegian dialect and slang of those living in the housing scheme. The characters are complex and authentic. On top of dealing with his ‘alky mammy’, Shuggie longs to be a normal boy who fits in as he deals with his own personal issues.

This is such an impressive debut novel.

Let’s start with the word ‘chores’. Language is important. My first tip would be to rebrand the heck out of that term if you have been using it. It hardly invites unbridled joyous involvement, does it!?

Also, give some considered thought to whether paying individuals for how they contribute to the household.

Is that a fit with your long-term goals as a family and for the individuals within it? My experience is that parents, once they look at the research, tend to leap to follow what it says.

For example, what the Harvey Grant research (longest running study in history that started in 1938 and is still going) tells us is that children who help in their household, without a physical reward learn the value of giving whole-heartedly and experience a greater sense of “belonging” within their family unit.

If we add an element of tangible “reward” (like monetary payment or screentime), it becomes about “getting” or “what’s in it for me.” Which ironically is one of the top complaints I hear from parents….that their children are acting ‘so ENTITLED’!

Whenever possible we want to cultivate intrinsic motivation in children which is doing something for the “inner” benefit (i.e., feeling proud, generous, or competent) verses doing something to receive something in return.

Rewarding a child externally actually undermines the child’s motivation long-term and decreases the likelihood of engaging in the behaviour on their own accord in the future.

Social media has brought us many wonderful opportunities. But there is a shadow side of the street.

In my Consulting Rooms, I regularly come across people whose lives are being made more difficult and more distressing by these platforms.

Teens especially are particularly vulnerable to its harms. One US based study has found a link in young people between social media and depression. I am not surprised.

Social media, no matter its benefits, is not real life. It is a virtual world and therefore has different values

and currency. ‘Likes’ are the coinage. Affirmation is what we’re after. We’ve all seen popular or attractive people garner huge amounts of likes even if they just post a picture of their coffee. And we’ve seen worthwhile posts virtually ignored. For someone struggling with self-worth, this can be devastating.

Real life works quite differently to this.

Some people without any filter like to post their entire personal lives and hold nothing private. Others post a highly curated and often glamorised version of their life so that it looks like they are living the best life imaginable every single day. Actually, their selfie is the best shot of five they took. It’s just an act, published in this way to make their lives look more interesting than they are.

Connection is a good and very important thing.

Human beings thrive on it. It drives away depression and enriches our lives in many ways. But there is nothing that comes close to the old fashioned personto-person contact where we see our friends and interact in real life.

Have a social media life by all means, but take a break from it occasionally. Sure it can be fun. But let’s not neglect to catch up with our real friends regularly by putting all our efforts into being ‘liked’ and affirmed online.

She said I had “thumbs of steel”. Steel? I resemble that remark. Then she started describing me as having trained in the Tower of London – and I laughed, possibly a little too loudly and probably too wickedly.

My job, as a well-trained physio with hardened thumbs, was to get her dodgy knee moving.

Bending, straightening and muscular mobility were in order. And even more important was the strength that would support her new bionic knee.

And yep – it was hard work. Sometimes, we physios have to get things moving and that can be pretty uncomfortable for the patient but here’s what Maree said in her last session: “It’s painful, but it feels so much better afterwards.”

I resisted the urge to say that terrible physio cliche “No pain, no gain” and instead said “That’s the goal, turn that frown upside down”. Like the doofus I am.

I really like this patient, she is super smart, funny and makes wicked soda bread. It makes my heart happy when I see how far she has been able to progress. It’s a long game, giving a knee replacement some WD-40 treatment. But when it happens it reminds me I’ve got the best job in the world. Helping patients like Maree makes the steel thumbs remarks totally worth it.

Disclosure in residential property contracts

For a contract for sale of residential property to be valid and enforceable it must include certain documents and disclose certain things by law. Any failure to disclose may provide the purchaser with a right to rescind (or pull out of the contract) without penalty within 14 days or sometimes right up to the date of completion.

Every vendor is obligated to disclose in the contract any matter or structure on the land that would justify the making of any upgrading or demolition order.

There are horror stories where, for example, a contract has been prepared without asking the vendor if there are any illegal structures. When the purchaser finds out that the large back deck is not authorised, a substantial reduction in sale price is demanded as compensation.

Required disclosure in every residential property contract includes: a. Council planning certificate that specifies zoning and issues such as whether the land is known to be flood-prone, bush-fire prone or contaminated; b. title documents including any easements, covenants etc registered affecting the property; c. registered plan of the land; d. sewer location diagram; e. any lease if being sold subject to the lease; f. for strata property, by-laws and strata plan; g. if there is a pool, a current compliance or noncompliance certificate; and h. notices concerning loose-fill asbestos, fire alarms and ‘cooling off’ rights.

Warranties implied into all contracts by law include that the property is not subject to ‘adverse affections’ including: (i) proposed road widening; (ii) compulsory acquisition; (iii) heritage order; (iv) fencing notice; or (v) demolition order.

A purchaser’s right to rescind must be exercised quickly once an issue is identified or else that right may be lost.

When buying or selling property it is wise to always use an experienced conveyancer or solicitor.
