Medals a mystery

Readers of The Local are being asked to help solve a mystery. The local RSL sub-branch hopes to find the owner of a valuable set of Australian service medals.

The medals, pictured at right, were found recently in a local park by a Fire & Rescue Lambton crew while on a job. They were passed on to LambtonNew Lambton RSL sub-branch member in the hope that they might know whose they are.

“It’s certainly someone who spent many years in serving in the Defence Forces, including a tour of Vietnam.” Warwick Budden, sub-branch president told The Local.

“They received multiple long service awards. These don’t come easily. If not for exemplary military service these would not be awarded.”

“It’s a real mystery. We’d really like to get them back in their owner’s hands.” Mr Budden said. If you think you might know the owner of these medals please contact Mark at The Local on 0455 210 000 in the first instance. We can then put you in contact with the RSL sub-branch.

LOCAL Matters

Nine years on

This, the 109th monthly issue of The Local, marks its 9th birthday.

I can’t properly describe how much fun it has been to create and grow this little publication since May 2014.

Don’t get me wrong, it has been a lot of work. And it still is each and every month. But it’s honestly been a lot of fun at the same time.

In my previous working life, with some of the largest regional newspaper publishers in the country, I remember thinking to myself, and maybe even saying out loud more than once, that you wouldn’t catch me going into small business for myself. And then The Local happened.

Nine years later it is still music to my ears whenever a reader tells me they love having The Local delivered each month.

Readers, advertisers and community groups are encouraged to contribute to The Local with news items, community events and any matter of general interest to residents of the area. In contributing news items the contributor accepts that such information may or may not be published in print and/or online using websites and social media channels at the sole discretion of the publisher. No guarantee of publication is ever implied by this invitation to contribute.

Except where noted otherwise, all information, photographs, text and images, within The Local is subject to copyright. Material may not be reproduced and/or distributed in whole or part in any form without the prior, explicit consent of the publisher.

The Local is proudly printed in Newcastle. The Local is 100% recyclable. Please recycle it, but of course only after you’ve read it!

ABN 48 260 331 896

I get a little kick when I hear that someone has sold the items they put in the ‘For Sale’ columns. And of course, each time I receive an enquiry from a potential new advertiser I get a thrill.

I repeat this often, but it bears further repetition. Your support of the local small businesses you see advertising on these pages means everything to them, and in turn, it means everything to me.

Without advertising support The Local would not and could not exist.

Please tell them you saw their ad and thank them for their part in getting your favourite little community newspaper into your letterbox.

There are some indications that business conditions are going to get a little tougher than they are now. Your support of small, independent businesses is vital.

Pool plan feedback welcome

A review by City of Newcastle has outlined a strategic path for the enhancement and protection of Newcastle’s five public swimming pools for the community over the next 20 years.

The ‘Inland Pools Strategy 2043’ sets out an investment plan for Newcastle’s network of public swimming pools to ensure they are fit for purpose in the long term.

The draft strategy proposes the creation of an Inland Pools Reserve Fund to ensure that funding is set aside annually to enhance the City’s five public pools over the next 20 years.

The investigation has also found that the condition of the public pools will enable them to continue to operate without replacement until at least 2043.

City of Newcastle is seeking feedback from the community and key stakeholders, including the newly formed Inland Pools Community Network.

The Inland Pools Community Network consists of representatives for Lambton, Wallsend, Mayfield, Stockton and Beresfield swimming centres in addition to a schools representative and an accessibility advocate.

Colin Irvine, who has been selected as the community

representative for Lambton War Memorial Swimming Centre, spends most days at Lambton Pool and said he is committed to actively contributing to the way the facilities are managed.

“These days I coach both swimming and water polo at Lambton Pool and am there most days. I can see the challenges faced by those running swimming pools from many perspectives,” Mr Irvine said in a media release issued by City of Newcastle.

“I have been a swimmer all my life and have spent a lot of time at Lambton Pool. In my younger years I was an elite level competitive swimmer and water polo player. As an athlete, a parent, a coach, a business owner, and as a frequent user, I have an appreciation for the

challenges faced by local and state authorities in balancing competing community needs with scarce resources.”

Lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the draft strategy considered current and future user needs, along with the existing conditions of the pools, to guide future investment.

“It shows how our network of five swimming centres service the community in their own unique way and sets a strategic direction for each, including upgrading Wallsend Swimming Centre as our population in the western suburbs increases.

“We’re encouraging the community to have their say on the draft strategy to help us shape how (continued on page 4)

Draft pools

(continued from page 3)

City of Newcastle protects and invests in its five public pools over the next 20 years.”

Anna Glasby, convenor of the We Love Lambton Pool group, said “This draft strategy raises more questions than it answers. While it shows clearly that Lambton Pool is the most popular and profitable in the city, the strategy only provides a cut and paste wish list of possible improvements, most of which City of Newcastle will not commit to funding. There is still no comprehensive concept plan for renewal of Lambton Pool.”

Anna Glasby, of the We Love Lambton Pool alliance, believes City of Newcastle’s Inland Pools Strategy raises more questions than it answers

“Gaps in the draft strategy include: no assessment of the pool heating, pumping and concrete cancer issues.” she said.

“There’s a large new indoor pool proposed. This could mean the loss of the grassy recreation and play space, and possibly even the children’s pools.

“There’s no certainty about the future of diving and elite water polo or the deep-water diving / water polo pool, the only one of its kind in the region.

“There’s no plan to make up lost revenue if public pools are forced to compete with the proposed State Government owned aquatic leisure centre at Hunter Park.” she told The Local.

Ms Glasby encouraged anyone with an interest in Lambton Pool in particular to read the draft strategy carefully to decide for themselves if it would deliver a coherent and achievable vision for the future.

The We Love Lambton Pool group is holding a community meeting on Monday 8 May to inform the community and pool users about the proposals currently being put forward. It is hoped that City of Newcastle staff are able to attend the meeting to give a short presentation on the specific plans for Lambton Pool. The meeting will be held 5.306.30pm at Club Lambton.

Win a double to NTC production

The next production from Lambton’s Newcastle Theatre Company is titled The Government Inspector.

It follows a panicked mayor and his cronies as they mistake an aristocratic traveller for the incognito official

assigned to investigate their district. Fearing exile to Siberia, they lavish him with bribes and fawning attention - which the man, a penniless opportunist, is only too happy to accept. A classic case of mistaken identity

and mayhem ensues, offering an hilarious reminder of the terrifying timelessness of bureaucracy and buffoonery!

Raised in Ukraine, discovered in Russia, still adored in both countries, Nikolai Gogol (1809

–1852) exposes the absurdity of life under autocracy better than anyone. He understood “what perfect nonsense goes on in the world”.

This new translation is by the late June Goss, a political activist associated with the New Theatre, Newtown, in the 1950s. This is its first presentation on stage. This production will be dedicated to NTC’s late friend and member, Noel Grivas, as well as June Goss, his mother.

The Government Inspector opens on Saturday 13 May at 8pm. Evening performances will be held on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays until 27 May. 2pm matinees will be performed on Sunday 14, Saturday 20 May.

The Local has one double pass to the winner’s choice of performance of The Government Inspector.

To be in the running for the double pass just text the words ‘Government Inspector’, your first and last name, and your preferred performance day/time to 0455 210 000 by Wednesday 10 May.

The winner will be advised by phone and their name published in next month’s issue of The Local.

Hello from Hamilton Business Association (HBA). We are a progressive volunteer collaborative that promotes a precinct that is welcoming and enjoyable for everyone. HBA won the City of Newcastle’s community group of the year in 2021. Love Local Love Hamilton Business Beat was officially relaunched on Tuesday 4th April. It was fantastic to see Detective Inspector Steve Benson and fellow officers in James St Plaza, ready to converse and answer questions from any of the business or residential community in Hamilton. Many issues were raised and answered with the big message being the encouragement of people to contact and report any crime as this helps the police direct their resources each and every day.

Some specific issues addressed were the confirmation that E-Scooters/Bikes cannot be ridden on footpaths and that theft from motor vehicles appears to be going unreported to the police. It was again reiterated that regardless of the outcome of the police investigation, the knowledge that these offences are being committed, along with locations/times will give the police valuable information and allow them to understand what is happening in the community and respond accordingly.

Before heading off to walk the street to visit the local businesses, the police explained that they regularly attend our area in both uniform

and in a covert capacity and that they will continue to do so.

The relationship we continue to build with the local police is very encouraging and the HBA welcome them to Hamilton each and every time.

HBA is having their annual deliverables plan workshop in May where we will discuss at length upcoming projects and collaborations for Hamilton in the coming financial year. Stay tuned…

Student exchange opens up world

For Australian High School students, YFU Student Exchange offers a range of opportunities to see the world up close, experience life in another country, and learn about another culture.

“Going on exchange is not like going on a holiday,” said Natrisha Finch, the National Director of YFU Australia and New Zealand. “It is a unique and life-changing experience that truly allows students to live like a local with a host family in another country, attend a local school and be part of the local community”.

Cultural exchange programs greatly benefit students, families, school communities and local communities. They advance intercultural understanding, mutual respect, and social responsibility. YFU has remained a leader of cultural exchange programs since it began in 1951 due to its commitment to safety, reputation for quality and

exceptional support services. It has operated in Australia for over 40 years as a not-for-profit organisation.

In addition to supporting students from Australia on their exchange journey overseas, YFU welcomes high school students to Australia to experience our culture, improve their English, and attend our local schools. “Seeing the students embrace our lifestyle and gain a personal perspective on Australia is a very rewarding part of my role. As a former exchange student, I understand what they are experiencing and how life-changing it really is”.

YFU exchange programs are cultural exchange programs, and students must attend high school while they are in Australia. The success of the program lies in host families. They allow students to become part of their family, support them on their exchange journey, and can learn

about the student’s country, cultural traditions, and family life. Australian regulations state that host families cannot be paid. They are volunteers who genuinely open their hearts and home to their students. Host families can be anywhere across Australia, and YFU is committed to diversity in host families and welcomes applications from families of all shapes and sizes.

YFU Student Exchange will have a stand at the 2023 Newcastle & Lake Macquarie Career Expo on Thursday 18 May at Broadmeadow Racecourse.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to talk to students, teachers and parents about the exchange experience and what programs and destinations are available to students before they graduate high school,” Natrisha said. For more information about YFU Student Exchange see their website: yfu.com.au.

THAT WAS THEN This is now with

Corner commerce

Many readers will have memories of the iconic corner shop, selling groceries and daily necessities in the midst of suburban housing. But it was not only the mixed businesses that set up on the prominent and prized corner blocks.

In 1892 the Newcastle Morning Herald and Miners’ Advocate in a feature article on the “rapidlyrising mining suburb of New Lambton” noted “a hairdressing saloon is kept by Mr. T. Griffiths.”

In 1903 Ralph Snowball photographed Thomas Griffiths’ hairdresser and tobacconist shop, situated on the corner of Lambton Road and Rugby Road.

The subsequent history of the business is somewhat difficult to determine, there being at least four different Thomas Griffiths in early New Lambton, two of whom lived on Lambton Road.

Aerial photographs from the NSW Historical Imagery website show that the shop building was demolished sometime between 1966 and 1974.

The other end of Lambton Road, at the intersection with Railway Street, was another location of corner commerce. William Oldham originally intended to open a hotel there, and in 1876 he applied three times for a publican’s license, without success. Advertisements indicate that by 1878 he was running a butcher shop there, and when William died in 1889 his son Joseph took over. However, it seems Joseph

While suburban corner shops have mostly disappeared, town shopping precincts such as Regent Street in New Lambton have continued. This is despite the dominance of the corporate shopping centres.

Oldham was more interested in civic service than continuing the family business. When New Lambton Municipality formed in 1889, Joseph was one of the nine aldermen first elected to the Council. In 1890 he was elected as New Lambton’s second mayor. After being narrowly defeated in the 1891 election, Oldham advertised the sale of his butcher shop building and equipment and took on the role of Works Foreman for the council.

Griffiths and Oldham are but two examples of the many suburban businesses that have come and gone over the years. When the big corporate shopping centres arrived in Newcastle (Jesmond in 1964, Kotara in 1965) the competitive pressure forced the closure of many corner shops, and few remain today. Here to HELP

It’s rubbish!

Dear Here to Help,

I am concerned about the number of older people who fall over putting out their rubbish bins. A friend of mine who works in emergency says they have at least one admission per month!

Surely, someone should do something to help prevent these avoidable accidents? Like a council service to pick up bins from registered elderly people.

Thank you for your query.

Rubbish bins can be a contentious subject.

When we were kids, my parents left us with a family friend for a weekend once. She took great joy shouting “c’mon kids! Let’s make your Dad’s bin smell like an actual bin.” I had a neighbour who always had extra rubbish – he offered to take out my bin each week if he could fill it up with his rubbish. Years later, my mother’s neighbour filled her bins on rubbish day. She wasn’t happy with this. I suggested to the neighbour that it might be helpful to take Mum’s bins out for her in exchange – and he does.

You raise an interesting issue. It demonstrates the difficulties of where private responsibility ends and public responsibility start. There is another aspect here – that of community responsibility. For government to be affordable, there needs to be a balance between what people do for themselves, what neighbours and communities do for one another (like my mum’s neighbour taking her bin out for her) and what people do for themselves. If government did it all for us, our rates and tax bills would be much more expensive to pay for all these additional services. On the other hand, hospital admissions and care are very expensive. And it is our tax dollars that pay for this expensive hospital care when someone falls over taking their bins out.

A local over 50s village body corporate has arranged with council to pick up bins from each house in the complex, rather than pick up all the bins at the entrance. The deal is that all driveways must be clear on bin day.

The question here is how to find the best balance. If you have a neighbour at risk of falling over on bin day, they may appreciate you helping with their bins. If you live with other elderly people or this is not practical, maybe your aged care provider or council has a service that can help you with your bins. It never hurts to raise the question.

PHARMACY Matters

Prevention - the best weapon against Flu

The formulation of influenza vaccine for use in Australia is determined by the Australian Influenza Vaccine Committee based on information and recommendations from the World Health Organisation (WHO). As in previous years, the Australian Government will provide flu vaccine free of charge to everyone 65 years plus; and those people qualifying for the “free allocation” also

include pregnant women, indigenous people 15 years and over, and anyone six months of age and over with a condition “pre-disposing to severe influenza illness” –such as heart or lung diseases.

Most children cope pretty well with the flu but young children are especially vulnerable to new strains of the flu such as the “swine flu” which was first identified in 2009. Vaccinations for over-6 month old assists their immune response.

The greatest concern for doctors and patients alike is the danger, not just of the flu itself, but of severe complications such as pneumonia and the effect of influenza on existing medical conditions. People with chronic heart, kidney or lung disease, diabetes or other long-term illnesses are particularly at risk. The stress caused by influenza can worsen these conditions and even cause premature death.

Today, prevention is our major weapon against influenza. You can help protect yourself by regularly washing your hands, personal hygiene and making sure your lifestyle is healthy with regular exercise you enjoy and a daily diet that includes the widest possible variety of foods. And, of course, annual vaccination against the flu is recommended for all people in high risk categories.

Everyone 65 years or older should have the flu vaccine. As well, at any age, you should be vaccinated if you have an ongoing illness such as diabetes, kidney disease, asthma, heart or circulation problems, or compromised immunity as a result of HIV, cancer or longer-term steroid use. Your doctor or Piggott’s Pharmacist can give you more details.

Each year in Australia, influenza causes an estimated 3,000 deaths in older people. There are also the economic costs to the community of more than one and a half million lost work days, 300,000 doctor visits and 18,000 people admitted to hospital. However, it’s not just older people who are affected by the flu. The fact is, rates of flu infection are highest among young children; although children under the age of five are less likely to show typical symptoms of the flu – the fever and the cough – so you may not know that your child has actually contracted the infection.

Now there is also a special effort to ensure people who might spread the infection to the above groups are vaccinated. This includes health workers – doctors, dentists, nurses, pharmacists, carers and even children. There is mounting evidence that widespread vaccination of children against influenza slashes infection rates in both children and the more vulnerable elderly.

For more advice about whether the flu vaccine is right for you speak with your Doctor or Ask Piggotts.

PHYSIO Matters

Mythbusters II

Last year I was annoyed. The annoyance reached a tipping point where I had heard so much guff and nonsense that I wrote an article on physio myths and where they might be better stuck. Due to being reannoyed this week, here is the myth-busting sequel:

1.Discs do not ‘slip’: Exactly where would they ‘slip’ to? Down your leg? Into your buttock? Up a slippery dip into your lower intestine? Foolish therapists (including some physios) have used this as a way of describing disc issues - and its dumb. Partially because it sounds scary and partially because it is anatomically impossible. The next therapist who says ‘slipped disc’ deserves to be handcuffed to a stereo playing The Bangles ‘Walk like

2. Foam rolling your ITB doesn’t do anything. Really. The ITB is made out of super tough stuff that would require a concrete roller to do anything. So don’t roll it. It’ll just make your leg sore. Remember pain does not always = gain. Sometimes its just pain = pain.

3. Cracking your back/neck/knuckles is not realigning you. It is not putting you ‘back in’. It’s not rotating a vertebrae and it certainly isn’t correcting a scoliosis or a so-called ‘leg length discrepancy’. A crack is a pocket of gas that expands/contracts in a joint and when it ‘pops’ can make you move a bit better and reduce pain. So it can be helpful, but not if its accompanied by an oversized bucket of hogwash. And no, cracking doesn’t cause arthritis (tell your mum).

4. Stretching before sport does not reduce the risk of injury. Doing that hamstring stretch you were taught in Year 9 P.E. before you try and chase that young winger down the sideline will not stop you tearing your hamstring (this may or may not be autobiographical). Warm up with gentle cardio, do some plyometrics, do some drills. Just don’t bother doing too much stretching. Hope this helps - Brightside believes in straight talking and getting our patients better so debunking dodgy directions is part of our job description. For help with pain. Or for a ‘crackingly good’ session of physio, call us on 4062 8862 or book online: www. brightsidephysio.com.au

LAW Matters

Buying or selling? Be prudent with property

We had a vendor client recently who allowed their building insurance on their investment property to lapse between exchange of contract and the date of settlement. The property was tenanted. An electrical short in the washing machine resulted in a fire that caused significant damage. Repairs have had to be made prior to completion at considerable cost. It is also prudent, though less common, for a purchaser to insure a property from the date of exchange of contract. That is the date at which you as the purchaser acquire an interest in the property. The alternative if something happens to the property before completion, is that you may find the vendor undertaking the cheapest possible repairs. Even worse, you may have to sue the vendor for the cost of repairs after completion. Better to have your insurer do that.

Another cautionary tales involves inclusions and exclusions on a sale. We heard of a matter recently where a vendor wished to leave large pot plants in situ however the purchaser, who was a developer, rejected them at completion. A dispute ensued about whose obligation it was to remove the pots. If you are a purchaser expecting an item to remain or be removed at completion, ensure it is listed in the contract as an inclusion or exclusion. If you are a vendor wishing to exclude a particular item from a sale, ensure it is listed in the contract as an exclusion to prevent a claim at settlement.

Most importantly, engage an experienced, wellreputed legal and conveyancing team to handle the transaction so that disputes and risks of any nature are minimised but if they occur, are well managed.
