ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES BLUEPRINT: PHASE II SECTOR: MUNICIPAL / GOVERNMENT Opportunities Noted in EDOB Opportunity Description 1) New planning direction / reform: advocate for planning and PPS reform re: - consistent planning across county (severances, land uses) - change policies to draw people to county and permit small development - streamline planning process - 5 – 10 yr plan to clean up incompatible land uses (eg. wrecking yards) - new zoning for creative ideas and land uses 2) review budgets: review budgets to assess what is possible and resource projects that wouldn’t otherwise be possible 3) economic development focus: pursue initiatives with an economic dev’t focus: - common causes join to pursue common platform (e.g, tourism) - rural planning reform - opportunities for students to return and find jobs - job inventory of what exists 4) youth involvement and training: make use of youth in government training - more opportunities for post secondary education in the County 5) develop niche markets: explore the feasibility of developing niche market opportunities, eg., aerodrome housing development, small farms and ATV trails 6) promote tourism and culture: as outlined in HC’s Cultural Plan continue to attract people to the area by offering multi-generational activities (e.g., Celtic festival, forbidden ride, trailer festival, gypsy camps; promote inland tourism 7) investigate municipal reorganization: - review way in which county is governed – consider one tier
