A message from AFL New Zealand As each year passes, new opportunities are continually presented to the New Zealand AFL community to engage and establish an affinity with the sport that originates in Australia but is now more than just Australia’s game. As our partnership with the Australian based leagues and organisations continue to develop, so does the opportunity to host an AFL fixture in Auckland in the near future. April 2013 was an historic occasion when the first AFL fixture in 140 years was played outside of Australia in Wellington. This has inspired participation numbers to grow with 20,000 New Zealanders now playing AFL each year. We can now add to the mix the possibilities of AFLX and AFL Womens, as two more opportunities for New Zealand based content. AFL New Zealand welcomes the Mornington Peninsula BlueScope Steelers U14 Boys, U16 Boys and Youth Girls, as they compete in their respective clashes against the AFLNZ Academy Level 1 & 2 and the NZ Youth Girls. The Mornington Peninsula BlueScope Steelers visit will see participants from the Mornington Peninsula Junior Football League compete against the AFL New Zealand Academy team for the third time. The Mornington Peninsula BlueScope Steelers Youth Girls return to New Zealand again and will take on the NZ Youth Girls. We are appreciative of the support provided by the Mornington Peninsula JFL to our association with our relationship continuing to nurture and grow. A wide variety of clubs from the League are represented in the two match series whilst the New Zealand teams showcases players fromeight regions throughout New Zealand. The visiting teams provide a significant opportunity to assist in the development of young athletes within New Zealand as they look to find their way in a new and mysterious sport. We look forward to the day when Australian players cross the ditch to be involved in the AFL New Zealand Premiership and this is already happening in conjunction with Mornington with young players from the touring teams, invited to participate in the AFL New Zealand Premiership, with four in attendance this season. Let’s enjoy another great weekend of football and welcome all involved to Aotearoa. Robert Vanstam, CEO AFL New Zealand

Mornington Peninsula Junior We would like to thank AFL New Zealand for this amazing opportunity to visit Auckland with our U14’s, Combined U15/U16 boys and Combined U15/18 Girls representative teams to play 2 matches against the respective New Zealand representative teams. To play an international representative match is an opportunity that most will never experience. The game of AFL is a truly unique sport that was originally formed in 1858 in Victoria Australia, primarily as something for the cricketers to do during the cold winter months. As all participants and spectators have witnessed it is an amazing sport with so many entertaining and thrill factors throughout the game – you never know what will happen next. The six matches over the weekend between the Mornington Peninsula Junior Football League “BlueScope Steelers” & AFL New Zealand representative teams will not entail the same sacrifices of our ANZAC’s, however I am sure the matches will showcase the same fighting spirit and camaraderie. We may be rivals on the field, but we are really looking forward to being allies off it. Our players and officials are excited about the adventure ahead of us in New Zealand and in particular to interact and embrace the culture we experience. The indigenous Māori culture is very intriguing to us and of course the Haka is world renowned and respected by everyone. What a great way to be educated in a new cultural experience by travelling, learning and playing the game that both countries are so passionate about – AFL or as we call it Australian Rules Football. This year is the 3rd year that the stand-alone Mornington Peninsula Junior Football League representative teams travel to New Zealand and our 5th year that the MPJFL has been involved and we are all extremely keen to ensure that this exciting venture continues. Last year our combined U15/16’s boys team came up against a very spirited New Zealand team and won both games but the 2nd game was far from

Football League easy as the NZ boys challenged the MPJ team with less than a goal the difference half way through the last quarter. The MPJ boys kicked away winning by a few goals. Our Youth girls team arrived with high expectations of being competitive against the very highly talented NZ Girls team that has been undefeated for the past few years. Our girls where not successful in both games but due to inaccurate kicking from both teams it could have gone either way but the NZ girls in the end were the better team. I am sure the girls this year are ready to take on the NZ Girls once again. Our U14’s boys team was the inaugural U14’s team to play against AFLNZ. We took the honours in the 1st game but realised we were up a very talented and determined NZ team. The 2nd game was a thriller! You could not have scripted it any better. As usual the NZ team came out fighting & applying an amazing amount of pressure and played fantastic football. The scores were neck & neck most of the game with the Kiwis hitting the front in the last quarter. The MPJ kicked a late goal levelling the game with seconds to go. Josh Whicher from Beleura JFC and a handful of NZ boys were running towards our goals, Josh picked the ball up with only seconds to go and just cleared the point post. Giving us a 1 point win! Therefore we will not be taking any of the NZ teams lightly, the improvement across all NZ age groups has been enormous, which is a credit to Rob & the AFLNZ coaching staff. Let’s not forget about the success of the AFLNZ U18’s team at the home of the MPJFL – BlueScope Reserve winning their first game against an Australian team. It was amazing with the last kick of the day winning the game & creating history. We look forward to having them back over the ANZAC week for a rematch! I am sure this time both the Australian & New Zealand Girls teams will put on an amazing series played with true ANZAC spirit and will make the most of the experience to play at such an amazing stadium.

Our team are extremely excited and full of enthusiasm but know they are in for a challenge coming up against a spirited New Zealand team. All teams are looking forward to standing arm in arm whilst experiencing the challenge of the Haka! We would like to extend our heart-felt thanks to CEO Rob Vanstam and all of the AFL New Zealand members for inviting us to participate and the unbelievable work carried out to ensure that these tours take place. I would also like to thank the players & parents from both the AFLNZ & MPJFL teams for embracing this venture and investing in the future of not only all of these players but the future of our sport. We would like to thank the following companies that have contributed in assisting our players to take this journey: • BlueScope Steel • Bowens Timber & Hardware • Sherwood Sportswear • Ross Faulkner • CGR Sportswear • Flight Centre • MB Commercial Linings • R.O.A.B – G.A.B Grand Lodge of Victoria We would also like to wish all the players the best of luck, enjoy the games but most of all embrace the experience. The executive of the MPJFL are excited and look forward to the games played in both the ANZAC spirit and passion.

New Zealand Youth Girls With increasing pathway opportunities growing throughout AFL New Zealand Secondary School Programmes, the team has several new athletes. Some with as little as four months involvement alongside more experienced campaigners now in their third and fourth seasons in the game. The Youth Girls Coaching staff lead by Mick Coultard will look to blend new and exciting talent with players with previous experience to help guide their new teammates through the campaign. They will look to share their knowledge and assist the new players both on and off the field. The development of the inaugural AFL Women competition in Australia has thrown fresh eyes on sport for women and also added to opportunities afforded to New Zealand participants. The involvement of Jolyn Collins in the Under 18 AFLW Championships in Melbourne 2016 followed by Killarney Morey twelve months later and Jaimee Wyatt in 2018, this is the first step towards New Zealanders playing in Australia’s premier competition for women. As part of the female development pathway, participation in the AFL New Zealand Youth Competition is now based at Auckland’s QBE Stadium, Hutt Park in Wellington and Burnside Park in Christchurch. This has provided an opportunity to develop much needed playing time and experience with their new sport in the lead up to the campaign and preparing them for the series ahead. The New Zealand Players have come through a variety of school programmes delivered in Secondary schools targeting female participation and the incentives for taking on a new sport are rewarded by potential national representation opportunities. AFL New Zealand has received considerable support through Regional Sports Trusts and KiwiSport initiatives and we are thankful for their support.

AFL New Zealand Academy The AFL New Zealand Academy has been created to provide a pathway for athletes to excel through AFL. The AFL New Zealand Academy will improve the skills and fitness of athletes, through a training and development programme. The Academy consists of two levels: Level 1: for Athletes that are new entrants to Academy and New Zealand representative pathway Level 2: for Athletes continuing their Academy and New Zealand representative pathway with their next step Under 18 or Senior New Zealand representative opportunities. Eligibility for each level is also age related changing each year, based on the year you were born. Academy Athletes are selected from the AFL New Zealand Youth Competition in December of each year with each level containing up to 45 athletes. New Zealand Academy teams play touring Australian teams, April each year, with final selection of the New Zealand Academy teams being reduced to 24 athletes at the start of April each year. With limitations on programmes delivered in Otago, talented players identified will be provided with Academy development staff and programme in place of the Youth Competition. The opportunity then exists for a fast track talented individuals from other sports and provide entry into the AFL New Zealand Academy. Academy athletes will participate in skill development, athletic testing and measurement, game play and personal development. Further opportunities arising from the AFL New Zealand Academy include, selection into New Zealand Academy teams, access to talent scouts and AFL International Scholarships.
