A message from AFL New Zealand As each year passes, new opportunities are continually presented to the New Zealand AFL community to engage and establish an affinity with the sport that originates in Australia but is now more than just Australia’s game. April 2013 was an historic occasion when the first AFL fixture in 140 years was played outside of Australia in Wellington. This has inspired participation numbers to grow with 30,000 New Zealanders now playing AFL each year. AFL New Zealand welcomes the AFL Academy, the Peninsula Saints U16 Boys ,Youth Girls and NSW Independent Schools as they compete in their respective clashes against the Senior, AFLNZ Academy Level 1 & 2 Hawks and the NZ Kahu Youth Girls The Peninsula Saints visit will see participants from the Victorian South East Leagues compete against the AFLNZ Academy Level 2 New Zealand Hawks team for the second time. The Peninsula Saints Youth Girls travel to NZ for the first time and will take on the NZ Kahu Youth Girls. The support provided by CEO Jeremy Bourke from AFL South East has been open minded and welcoming. No fewer than 20 clubs from the two Leagues are represented in the two match series whilst the Under 16 Hawks showcase 15 different Secondary Schools from seven regions throughout New Zealand. The NSW Independent Schools are travelling to New Zealand for the first time after hosting the U16 NZ Hawks in May 2015 and will take on the Academy Level 1 side in a two match series. On the 24th of April at QBE Stadium, Auckland the NAB Rising Star AFL Academy and their opponents the New Zealand Hawks, showcase what the future could be. This represents the Academy’s fifth visit to New Zealand. An amazing percentage of members from the past four sides have now progressed to AFL and professional ranks and so once again we welcome to our shores, stars of the future . The New Zealand Hawks continue to grow the awareness of the sport and the showcase the desire to represent their country. Following on from other successful Trans Tasman sporting competitions, the Hawks look to place their stamp on the future. The visiting teams provide a significant opportunity to assist in the development of young athletes within New Zealand as they look to find their way in a new and mysterious sport. AFL New Zealand’s association with the Australian Leagues and organisations continues to grow with 5 current New Zealand Hawks Senior players playing and testing their skills within Australia. We look forward to the day when Australian players cross the ditch to be involved in the recently formed AFL New Zealand Premiership Let’s enjoy another great weekend of football and welcome all involved to Aotearoa. Robert Vanstam, CEO AFLNZ

NAB AFL Academy The NAB AFL Academy commenced in 1997 and provides the best young talent in the country a NAB AFL Academy scholarship, as an opportunity to develop their football and personal skills in an accelerated AFL program over 12 months. The Level One squad of 25 players is selected following the NAB AFL Under-16 Championships, and the Level Two Squad includes the best 35 Under-18 players in the country; these players are eligible for the upcoming NAB AFL Draft. Both squads are under the guidance of Head Coach Brenton Sanderson along with Assistant Coaches Glen Jakovich and Brad Ottens. In 2015 there are 203 graduates of the NAB AFL Academy on AFL lists, including 8 of the current Captains. At the 2014 NAB AFL Draft, seven of the top 10 players were Academy players including the first selection Patrick McCartin. This is a wonderful opportunity for Australian Football to display its talented youth in the international arena against a region that is growing in both its development and the way in which it has taken to the AFL code, displaying great promise for the years ahead. The AFL would like to thank NAB for its outstanding support of the entire “NAB AFL Rising Stars Program which includes the NAB AFL Academy. This is the 5th occasion the NAB AFL Academy will come together to play the New Zealand Hawks. Both countries have a very proud and honourable history through the ANZAC spirit, may this spirit live on through life and football for many years to come. Lest We Forget

New Zealand Kahu Youth Girls The New Zealand Kahu Youth Girls, sees some new exciting talent and some past players returning to the fold. With the increasing pathway opportunities growing throughout AFL New Zealand Secondary School Programmes, the team has several new athletes with as little as four months involvement with the game. Kahu Coach Mick Coultard is excited to see the new team come together with the teams experienced players to guide their new teammates through the campaign. They will look to share their knowledge and assist the new players both on and off the field. “Playing AFL for New Zealand for the first time is a steep learning curve. It will be a true test of the Senior players leadership to ensure the New Zealand Kahu continue to grow and develop in their newly adopted sport. As part of the female development pathway, participation in the AFL New Zealand Youth Competition now based at Harbour Stadium, has provided an opportunity to develop much needed playing time and experience with their new sport in the lead up to the campaign and preparing them for the series ahead. This is the first time the Peninsula Saints Youth Girls have toured New Zealand. We welcome them to our shores in what we hope is the first time of many. The New Zealand Kahu Players have come through a variety of school programmes delivered in Secondary schools targeting female participation. The incentives for taking on a new sport are rewarded by future national representation opportunities with the New Zealand Kahu. AFL New Zealand has received considerable support through Regional Sports Trusts and KiwiSport initiatives and we are thankful for their support.

afl South east peninsula Saints One of the things we all love about the game of Australian Football is it’s uniqueness. It’s not like any other sport - a game that is both exciting to watch and to participate in. In Victoria, Football is considered almost a religion. It is a passion that drives millions to world class stadiums as well as local and country football grounds every year. This week, players from the Mornington Peninsula region of Victoria get to do something that not many in our sport have the opportunity to do. That is, travel overseas to play our game and represent their community against an international opponent. Whilst the indigenous nature of Football is something that we hold dear, witnessing other countries adopting the game with a similar passion and enthusiasm is quite exciting even for ardent Football purists. The Peninsula Saints U16 Boys and Youth Girls representative teams are made up of players from leagues within the AFL South East Region and these leagues hold a strong history of junior development and players progressing to AFL lists. The matches played during the tour between the AFL South East and AFL New Zealand representative outfits continue to mark the beginning of what is hoped is a long and mutually beneficial partnership. As outlined earlier, our boys and girls are presented now with an opportunity rare in our game. For the New Zealand boys and girls, the opportunity to play against teams of like age and ability at the same time as representing their country is one that I’m sure will be forever treasured. AFL South East is keen is ensure this venture continues to grow over the Anzac Weekend in years to come. We are also keen to explore new opportunities for New Zealand teams to visit our shores and interact with our communities and clubs. In closing, I would like to thank Rob Vanstam and the team at AFL New Zealand for the work they have done to make the logistics of our trip as smooth as possible and for their enthusiasm in getting these matches off the ground. I would also like to thanks the parents of the players, who have contributed a significant amount of money to give their sons and daughters this opportunity. As the players from New Zealand know only too well, trans-Tasman ventures are expensive exercises and how wonderful it is to see so many parents also making the trip. We would like to wish all players the very best - enjoy the experience and we hope you gain a lot out of the games. We certainly look forward to seeing the talent from all the teams on full display and experiencing the Haka to kick things off! Jeremy Bourke Region General Manager AFL South East

AFL New Zealand Academy The AFL New Zealand Academy has been created to provide a pathway for athletes to excel through AFL. Â The AFL New Zealand Academy will improve the skills and fitness of athletes, through a training and development programme. The Academy consists of two levels: Level 1: for Athletes that are new entrants to Academy and New Zealand representative pathway Level 2: for Athletes continuing their Academy and New Zealand representative pathway with their next step U18 New Zealand Hawks or Senior New Zealand Hawks. Eligibility for each level is also age related changing each year, based on the year you were born. Eligibility for this year can be found at aflnz.co.nz Academy Athletes are selected from the AFL New Zealand Youth Boys Competition in March of each year with each level containing up to 30 athletes. New Zealand Hawks Academy teams play touring Australian teams, April each year, with final selection of the New Zealand Hawks Academy teams being reduced to 24 athletes at the start of April each year. With limitations on programmes delivered in the South Island, talented players identified in the regions of Christchurch and Otago will be provided with a development staff and programme in place of the Youth Boys competition. The opportunity then exists for a fast track entry into the AFL New Zealand Academy as a wild card entrant. Academy athletes will participate in skill development, athletic testing and measurement, game play and personal development. Further opportunities arising from the AFL New Zealand Academy include, selection into New Zealand Hawks Academy teams, AFL New Zealand National Combine selection, access to talent scouts and AFL International Scholarships.

New Zealand Hawks Academy Level 1 to take on NSW Independent Schools The New Zealand Hawks Academy Level 1 will play a 2 game series against the New South Wales Independent Schools team in Auckland over the ANZAC Day weekend. This is the first time the team from the New South Wales region has travelled over to New Zealand with high expectations for their 6 day trip. The tour comes off the back of a successful visit by a New Zealand Junior representative team to Sydney in April 2015. The series takes place in conjunction with visits from other touring parties from South East Victoria as well as the AFL Academy team. The New Zealand Academy Level 1 contains athletes that are new entrants to the New Zealand representative pathway with all players playing for New Zealand for the first time. Players have come from AFL New Zealand programmes delivered at Intermediate and Secondary School and have also participated in in the recently completed AFL New Zealand Youth Competition located in both Wellington and Auckland regions.

New Zealand Hawks Academy level 2 to play U16 Peninsula Saints The New Zealand Hawks Academy Level 2 will play a 2 game series against the U16 Peninsula Saints from South East Victoria in Auckland over the ANZAC Day weekend. This is the second time a team from the South East Victorian region has travelled to New Zealand and are looking forward to the five day trip. General Manager of the region Jeremy Bourke, has been successful in creating an annual fixture between the two teams and this has been supplemented by a Youth Girls team also being represented in a two match series against the New Zealand Kahu. Following on from the ANZAC Day weekend, AFL New Zealand will have an Under 18 National team travel to AFL South East in Melbourne where they will firstly link with local clubs before playing a game against local opposition and a chance to visit the home of AFL for a great experience. The New Zealand Hawks Academy Level 2 team sees an even split of return players and debutants with the development of the players improved through participation in the inaugural AFLNZ Youth Competition, over summer and hailed a great success and the best preparation youth teams have had leading into National Representation.
