WORDS/INTERVIEW BY:
OGI MERZIER While planning the beauty issue, I thought that I would put some of grandma’s theories to the test. She said that there were beauty exercises that you could do to explore the fountain of youth. Luckily, I have Kay on speed dial and this is how our convo went..
Ogi: Hey Kay! how are you? I hate and love looking at pictures of you. here's why, you let me see what I can look like in the future and you remind me of what I look like today! Lol! I have a few questions for you, is there a such thing as facial exercises? Kay: Are you gonna make me laugh this early in the morning? Lol! Yes there is a such thing as natural facial exercises. The face, like any other part of the body is comprised of various muscles. These muscles if not strengthened by exercise begin to weaken more and more as time goes on. The face is one of the areas of the body that is actually over-worked at times because of gestures, laughing, speaking, and numerous other daily habits that people do without being conscious. O: Okay, here is the million dollar question, do natural facial exercises really work? K: Yes! There are numerous exercises. However, just like any other body part, the exercises must be done regularly for an extensive period of time and with proper guidance. However, if people are looking for a quick fix or to compete with the un natural (plastic surgery) Do not look to these exercises as the magic wand. O: Is there a facial exercise for the infamous chicken neck? K: Yes. The exercise pulls the mentalis (lower lip) up and tightens the platysma (front part of neck). I must say that it is a very natural way to keep your face, chin and neck as firm as possible (naturally).
Kay: (cont.) However, the neck area is one that over time looses it s elasticity. Another common reason is excessive weight gain and loss which may result in excess skin hanging from the neck area. In this case a small procedure to remove the excess skin may be the only remedy (if the person deems the skin non-tolerable). Ogi: Kay: Not such good news on this question. Unless you turn into Cher (who maintains a very constant non-expressive look on her face), it is almost impossible to avoid crow’s feet to some degree. Laughing, living an unhealthy lifestyle, stress and lack of exercise all add to the amount of wrinkles around your eyes, resulting in crow’s feet. So, although laughing and smiling adds years to your life span and spirit; it also adds wrinkles around your eyes!! You choose which is more important. I choose a few wrinkles around my eyes and a healthy long life!!! Ogi:
Kay: Ladies Give it up!! Lol! Perky boobs were put here on earth for women who were blessed with not having to do a lot of excessive exercise, have not gained or lost more than 10 – 15 lbs at a time and those who ve invested in plastic surgery. If you don t fall in that category; then your boobs probably will fall!! Some trainers will recommend an extensive amount of chest exercises to help lift and tone. Ladies, do NOT fool yourself. Chest exercises strengthen and build the pectoral muscles but do NOT tighten or lift the fat tissue. DO wear a good sports bra during vigorous exercise, and DO some light chest exercises for overall strength and balance in all muscle groups.

Whether your shape is petite, plus-size, athletic or otherwise, a quality foundational garment can transform problem areas into a sleek canvas for any outfit you ve been longing to wear. A well-fitting bra is essential for every woman. Studies indicate that most women do not wear the correct bra for their body, so having a professional fitting can work wonders. The key is support, regardless of your size. An ill-fitting bra can create bulges and bulkiness, so opt for one snugly fitted with straps that stay comfortably in place. Control-top underwear and girdles are not just for your grandma. Underwear with a control-top smoothes out the belly for an even fit beneath slinky dresses, and girdles with a boy-short cut are ideal to streamline the hips, thighs and bottom under a tight skirt. Slips are a dress’s best friend, particularly ones that are seethrough. Slips can be snug to the body or hang loosely, and they prevent dresses and skirts from any bunching or clinging. Some slips are even pretty enough to work as part of an outfit, like with a bit of lace peeking out from a low-cut dress. Just remember to leave some to the imagination and it will be more classy than trashy. The new year is the perfect opportunity to try a new style, and regardless of what ensemble you step out in, these pieces will allow you to emphasize your shape with confidence.

For many Celebs hairstyles, 2010 was the year to part with their long locks in favor of a shorter look. Many stars have the bone structure to pull this extreme look off, but for others this was a hair-do gone wrong. Emma Watson (1), star of the Harry Potter movies as Hermione, has always looked fresh-faced and pretty with her light brown waves. But after filming the final installation, Emma opted for a major pixie cut, resulting in the hair change that sparked quite a bit of controversy with her fans. However, I think the cut does wonders for her delicate features and really showcases her brown eyes. In preparation for an upcoming role, Anne Hathaway (2) traded her long brown hair for a pixie with long fringe swept over her eyes and tussled pieces throughout, highlighting her natural wave. I think this is a style she should keep even beyond this role. Thumbs up on this messy pixie.
Carey Mulligan (3) is one of Hollywood s newest it girls, and she is part of the newest wave of trendsetting young movie stars with petite features to carry a pixie cut with ease. The beautiful Alyssa Milano (4) could pull of any hairstyle, and from her days on the WB s Charmed, she truly has. But her current very short pixie puts her stunning features at center stage. Some stars struggled in their attempt to make a drastic hair change. Rumer Willis (5), for example, attempted a very short platinum blonde look that washed out her pale skin entirely and did not work with her face shape. A longer face like Rumer s should have bangs and a length that hits just below the jaw line to balance out the face. A darker color would also bring more life to her skin tone. Rhianna (6), while known to rock riskier hair styles, attempted a fiery red bowl cut, circa early 1990s. The sides of her head were shaven, making for a lopsided look resembling a mushroom. I give her credit for being fearless, but this style choice did nothing for her.

Another HUSH EXPOSED! Meet Miss Alexandria Duvell (image below) My drag career started in 2007 after seeing my first drag show at a club called Rumors. I was taken in by the glamour and theatrics. The girls in the show amazed me with their makeup, costumes, and dancing. I saw it as a way to create a perfect world. When I'm Alexandria, I can control how my life is going to play out. Alexandria is an escape from the everyday and she has no obligations except to put on a great show. Alexandria started at the very bar I saw my first show at, Rumors. I worked there off and on till I moved to Chicago. I also started performing at other local bars in Grand Rapids Diversions, Throwbacks and Stilettos in Detroit. I realized that as a performer I could help others in the G.L.B.T. (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender) community. I started volunteering my time as a performer to host events to raise money for equal rights. When I moved to Chicago (as Nicholas Curtis of course) I thought I was going to retire Alexandria, but in a turn of events I went out in drag for Halloween and met the show director of a bar called Scarlet where I'm currently a house queen. I also have the pleasure of working Berlin a club that is known for being an after hours bar with house music and dancing. As It stands Alexandria Duvall has no end in sight. The queen ofBeauty Words by: Xavier Lang
When it comes to essence of femininity and allure, no one does it better than the female impersonator. A once "hush" is now a mainstream entity and a true art form. This genre officially merged with fashion in the 1990's, when Andre Charles (aka RuPaul) stunned the world with his grace and beauty. Ordering us all to be "supermodels" and telling all bitches that we "better work!" 20 years later, RuPaul is still making strides and his reality competition "RuPaul's Drag Race" which airs on the LOGO Channel, is about to make it's season 3 debut. The show premieres on January 24th.
Hush/Page 68
Chicago has a place in this art form. For over 40 years the ladies at The Baton Show Lounge have been entertaining local and international crowds. The club has been featured on every major daytime talk show since the early 1980's beginning with Chicago's own The Phil Donohue Show. The Baton has also seen it's fair share of celebrities, including the late Chris Farley, Janet Jackson, Joan Rivers, Madonna and screen legends Lauren Bacall and Joan Crawford to name a few.

If The Baton Show Lounge was the beginning, it damn sure is not the end! There are over 20 show lounges in Chicago that feature the art of female impersonation. Audiences can visit a new show each and every week. The Kit Kat Lounge and Supper Club, Beatnix, Hamburger Mary's, Roscoe's, Berlin, Cocktail, Circuit Night Club, Pita Queen and Mary's Attic are just a few of the venues that feature nightly shows.

In terms of performances, prepare to be amazed! No one knows beauty like a queen. The stage names and persona's alone are a example of pure unfiltered creativity. The costumes are nothing short of genius. Gone are the days of sparkle from head to toe! We are now seeing these ladies in very sophisticated dresses infused with trend. Audiences are getting fashion, great entertainment, a look at unique hair trends and the best makeup artistry ever to walk across a stage. You can't deny that these girls are the Queens of Beauty!

If you want to get a true fashion insider excited, just whisper that award season is right around the corner. You will see eyes all a glow and fists clutched with anticipation. The red carpet has beauty and excitement and it gives us some insight as to who we can expect to look at as future fashion icons. Far too many times, we have seen celebrities get it right and we have also seen them get it very very wrong! This
year, it's safe to say that you will see extreme ends of the spectrum. Look for soft muted pales and nudes with sparkle, an occasional bronze or copper and a multitude of red. From cherry red, to burgundy. Red will be the color of choice. Here at HUSH, we decided to explore some of the Fall 2010 Couture Collections and list what we think you might see on the red carpet this award season! Welcome to our 11th Issue! It's beautiful to say that! What a year we have had at Hush Chicago Magazine! January 2010 we had our Hush Chicago Magazine Meet and Greet at the M Lounge in Chicago's South Loop and we were very excited about this project that got started from an ad on Craigslist!

Who could have imagined that night that we would be still going strong a year later? We have had the honor to present a true Chicago HUSH, model Lexi Tomchek, a future contestant on the Cycle 15 Season of America's Next Top Model. Yes you saw her first here in Hush Chicago Mag!
is for beauty! We also exposed the HUSH on two local models, Natalie Bryant and Marta Traskevych who were signed to Factor Models (formally ELITE MODELS). We created a magazine that only puts Chicago models on it's cover and only features images shot by local Chicago photographers. Who would have imagined this beautiful entity? When people gave up on us and laughed at our typo’s, month after month we kept making issue after issue!
Now as we head into 2011 with February's Heart Hush, we have found the formula that make's HUSH the dramatic, unique and fierce beauty of a publication that you have come to love! With over 50,000 readers world wide (from word of mouth), we have accomplished something that's sure to become your new beautiful best friend! Don't you just LOVE a GOOD HUSH?
