I believe that there is no place like home! Domestic Hush explores all avenues of the word. We get our first taste of fashion from our Mothers. It’s because of this that I decided to do 4 Fashion Editorials dedicated to the American Housewife, who has evolved over the years in our society and in the world of Fashion. Decadent Domestication, (Images by Karen Spence) explores a housewife from the late 70’s/early 80’s who lavished about in pure opulence. This interpretation leads into the exciting “of the moment” “Oh La La” trend which will make it’s debut at countless weddings and other upscale events this Spring/Summer season. Proper Domestication (Images by Andrew Nawrocki) features a gentle housewife who dreams of becoming a photographer. This editorial shows a subtle glimpse of a 1960’s influence that has resurfaced in Women’s American fashion with the induction of our new First Lady, Michelle Obama and references from our forever First Lady, the great Jackie O. Defy Domestication, (Images by Melinda Jane Myers) displays a young sassy housewife of the 1950’s, who is on the cusp of rebellion and will no doubt get her way. Indeed the 80’s are back! This season we revisit the 80’s trend, “80’s does 50’s.” This trend used current 80’s fabrics (cottons and knits) with 50’s lines and patterns. For 2010, garments are infused with bright colors and hardwear detailing. Respect Domestication, (images by Joanne Spyridakos) takes a strong look at the silent housewife, the abused one. Chicago Fashion Designer Anna Hovet, created this collection to bring awareness to the subject of the reality that is Domestic Violence.

I
magine a life in
the glamorous world of fashion, sitting in the front row to view the latest collections from the top fashion houses, only to attend over 300 shows within a year! Imagine walking the red carpet, having an exclusive wardrobe from two of the industries most promising new fashion designers delivered to your door! Sounds fantastic? That’s only the beginning!
Can it get anymore enticing? How would you like to be on the A-list for a cities first ever Fashion Week? You only travel first class and your dog has to come along for the ride. Speaking of your dog, before staying in a hotel, it must be prearranged that there is a bed for your dog and that your pet’s meals are served on a silver platter. Back to another question... Would you like to have fashion giants like H&M (H&M has over 2000 stores worldwide and is owned by the largest fashion retailer in the world!) request you for a interview to get your take on the current trends for the season?
Last question... Would it be nice to be a Celebrity in your own right and brush shoulders with other Celebrities? Including A-list actors, singers and designers. Do you need to know what Celebrities I am referring to before you answer? How about Designers like Karl Largerfield (Fendi/Chanel), Donetella Verasace (Versace) and actors like Academy Award Nominated Queen Latifah, Mickey Rourke, Dame Helen Mirren and World renowned singers like Janet Jackson, The Black Eye Peas and Usher. Over 300 Celebrities total! Is your answer YES? If so, keep reading! You’ll meet the person who lives the life I just so enviously described!
So for about 2 weeks...
I was thinking of what
I wanted to ask Mr. Jones. I put together a few questions and I decided to let him tell me the things that he felt would be relevant to the readers. It turns out that I made a great decision. I had a true experience for the duration of our conversation. The interview started at 1:30pm Central Standard Time (7:30pm in Paris, France) and ended two hours later. Was it wrong of me to want to keep him on the phone forever? Perhaps..but how often does a girl from the Westside of Chicago get to talk to someone who is living the life that I described in the column to the left and is literally a walking wikipedia.com when it comes to Fashion? He can roll dates, names and correct spellings of the top of his dome, much like how the rest of us can flutter an eyelash! Effortlessly! His fashion career started in the 1990’s while attending Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. Yes, he is from our homeland! The Good Ole USA! In his second year at Morehouse, he became a advisor and image consultant for women who aspire to own the crowns from The Miss USA and Miss America organizations. Remember these are the original competitions that launched a career when there was no America’s Next Top Model. (which he has a very strong opinion about btw!) Marcellous L. Jones is currently the CEO of MLJ Media. MLJ Media owns Model Makers, a scouting division that has launched the careers of several high profile top fashion models who scored campaigns with clients like Benetton and Dolce&Gabanna. Mr. Jones is also the Editor N Chief of TheFashionInsider.com. A site dedicated to all things relevant in fashion where you will find a few of his fashion reviews. He has written over 2000 reviews since 2004. He is the television host for the show he created The Fashion Insider, which solitified him as one of the top fashion critics in the world! Turn the page..this is how the interview unfolded....... the Top Fashion Critics in the world.
Words and Interview by: Ogi Merzier
the ultimate
fashion insider
meet marcellous l. jones
O:I have to say, that is
Ogi: Thank you so much for taking my call and agreeing to do this interview. I am a true lover of all things fashion and The Fashion Insider is one of my favorite shows!
Marcellous: I’m looking forward to speaking with you today.
O:You are a true fashion “jetsetter!” Is it safe to say that Paris, France is home?
M:Wow, Paris has been home since 1996. However my focus at the moment is on the pulse of European Fashion. Which has caused me to travel quite a bit more than usual. I just got back from Georgia’s first ever Fashion Week and I’ll be headed to Poland and the Ukraine for Fashion Week in those countries.
O:Given the fact that you have spent most of your career in the fashion capitals and in other international markets, what would you say is the juxtaposition of fashion in the United States verses fashion in Europe?
M:Most European countries have seen lots of war and have overcome the turmoil of such. I think that it is because of this that European Societies value life and therefore value individuality. This plays directly into the world of fashion. Trends are important and provide much relevance, however, one must have their own distinct point of view when it comes to fashion. This is very present in Europe.
I don’t think we should spend much time on the fashion houses, the consumer wants something fresh and new” -MLJ
O:I’d love to hear which collections and/or designers (both womenswear and menswear) would you consider to be fresh and new for Fall 2010?
changing. Men are starting to come into their own in the US, thanks to some major A-list entertainers and rappers like Kanye West. Who is from Chicago! It was stated on your bio that you interviewed him.
“Is that where he is from? I had a interesting encounter with Kanye......” - MLJ
M:I noticed him in the front
For women, I like designers Alexandre Vauthier, Basil Soda and Christophe Josse.
row of several fashion shows. He was at the Henrik Vibskov show, a Danish Designer who is not relatively known. I was some what intrigued. I then saw him at the very last show of the season, the Romain Kramer show. I had heard that he was a huge rapper in the States. I had never been interested in who he was or what he did. At that last show I asked him, “with the huge impact that you rappers have on fashion, why don’t you mention any black designers in your music?” “don’t you think that those designers would benefit from the exposure more so than the huge fashion houses? He got very mad at me which did not phaze me one bit.
O:it’s obvious that menswear
O:So let’s talk people
is much bigger in European markets than in the States.
getting mad at you. Does that happen very often? I read the review on Elie Saabs spring/summer 2010 collection, ouch? I think the headline was, “beautiful soft colors, but no surprises”
M:In men’s wear, there is a rising star fashion designer by the name of Juun J. His Fall 2010 collection incorporated Kimono Sleeves, lots of leather and wool. These are textiles that you don’t normally see combined in a collection. Song Zio, I like very much! He is a true innovator in menswear at the moment. I personally am dressed by Kenzo, which I loved this season. Knits and pants were standouts. Kenzo also featured accessories for men, which I feel is very important. It gives the collection functionalism.
M:I think men in places like Italy, France and Japan are more comfortable with who they are, therefore they have the ability to get next to fashion in a way that men in the US can’t.
images from TheFashionInsider.com- used with permission
M:
I am a fashion critic. I give my opinion. It’s that
simple. I have a obligation to the consumer. I’m not bothered by the larger houses who don’t like my reviews. I do call some of the younger designers and I will personally explain the thought process behind my statements. I’d like to see them grow as a designer and as a brand.
O:
I have read that you are the next Andre Leon Talley!
How do you feel about those comparisons?
M:
I am independent, I don't work for anyone. I don't
compare myself to anyone. I have great respect for Andre. His mark in fashion is apparent. I am very flattered, that some one would compare me to him. I am very content with who I am and my role in fashion right now. I consider myself to be the “fashion insider”.
O:I
t’s funny that you mentioned fashion right now,
because right now fashion has become infused with the reality show genre. How do you feel about show s like the Project Runway and Top Model franchises?
M:
I am not a fan. Project Runway, does have some
degree of creditability. I did see a collection by one of the fan favorites, Mr. Michael Knight. I agreed with the judges decision of not selecting him as the winner. They are paying attention to the elements that come with a designer and the designers work in general. Fashion is not easy! Fashion is one of the most ungrateful industries that one can pursue. Celebrity without merit is Celebrity without warrant! Top Model is a pile of crap! Top Model (Paris) only lasted one season here! It did not fly! If I was sitting next to Tyra, I would tell her that the show is a pile of crap. Not only have I worked as a scout, I was a model trainee. The show is not depicting the modeling world correctly. That is not how it works. Tyra never had to do the things that the girls are subject to. She made it very clear that she was going to create her own niche in the industry. She is a very smart business woman. I respect the business decision and nothing more.
O:
And finally, you are a Editor N Chief, and a CEO!
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
M:
Simple ambitions, open a office in Paris. It may be
hard to believe, but MLJ Media runs a virtual office. I’d like to have a Fashion Insider Award Show and I'd like to lecture students. I'd let to prepare new Designers for the future of fashion.
O:
Splendid! On that note, I will conclude our interview.
Thank you for interviewing with Hush Chicago Magazine! I’d love to have you at our launch party in the fall! If your schedule permits of course.
M:
I would love to be there. Please keep me updated
on happenings and stay focused and true to your endeavors! Good Night! Marcellous L. Jones, a “new” fashion icon exposed!

You have mastered the first date, got the guy and now your relationship is in full bloom. However, the stress of perfecting a first date look is nothing compared to the anxiety you feel peering into your closet hours before meeting his mother. She has raised him, loved him and advised him his entire life, and you are well aware of the fact that her opinion of you is crucial. This is no time for your comfiest jeans and old college T-shirt. Aim to find classic pieces that you’re comfortable in. Steer clear of anything too low-cut or flashy, and keep the hemline to your knees or lower. Dress as if you were going to a family party of your own. Avoid business suits, opting instead for printed skirts and dresses. Floral pieces are everywhere this season, and when they aren’t too flashy, they seem feminine and elegant. Keep make-up simple. Rosy cheeks, some mauve lipstick and shimmery taupe eye shadow will play up features without making you look too overdone. Choose a few favorite jewelry items. They make great conversation pieces. The most important accessory to remember is a genuine smile. You want to seem poised and confident, no matter how nervous you may be. Relax and have a good time, and remember to allow all the wonderful traits your boyfriend loves about to shine through when you meet his mom. In no time, she’ll love you too. proper domestication There is a touch of the 60’s when it comes to this season’s dresses. Inspired by the ultimate image of domestication, First Lady Michelle Obama and the Queen of Camelot (former First Lady) Jackie O. The 60’s dress is back! Updated with embellished necklines, constructed in timeless colors and prints with hem lines below the knee. Dreams of being a photographer or a top legal counselor may have to be pushed to the back burner for the sake of “Proper Domestication.”

Close to 33% of women that are murdered are killed by an intimate partner. 18% of women that experience domestic violence do not report it to authorities.
Nearly 1.5 million women are physically assaulted by their partner every single year in the US. Somewhat surprising is the fact that the number of men that are assaulted is close to 850,000. It seems as though the amount of men that are facing violence from their partner is not as low as many believe.
Women between the ages of 20 and 24 are most likely to face violence from a partner.
Over 1/4 of women were raped or sexually assaulted by their partner at some point in their life. That is one in every four women in the United States. Think about how many women you interact with on a daily basis, and then think about how many of them have had to deal with an act of sexual violence. For men the number is a bit lower, but still significant. Around 8% of men have been raped or sexually assaulted in their lifetime.
.More than 50% of women that are killed by a
firearm are murdered by their partner. As much as people worry about strangers and the potential threat that they pose, the statistics show that women should be just as worried if not more that their spouse or boyfriend will be holding the firearm rather than a stranger.
Witnessing violence between one’s parents or caretakers is the strongest risk factor of transmitting violent behavior from one generation to the next.
81% of women stalked by a current or former intimate partner are also physically assaulted by that partner; 31% are also sexually assaulted by that partner.
Victims of intimate partner violence lost almost 8 million days of paid work because of the violence perpetrated against them by current or former husbands, boyfriends and dates. This loss is the equivalent of more than 32,000 full-time jobs and almost 5.6 million days of household productivity as a result of violence.

Ten Things YOU SHOULD KNOW about Valerie Wilson
she takes on the Hush 10 List! 1. Her aprons are made in the USA.
