Calvin Klein … All Wrong! Kevin Carrigan Does Fall all wrong...don’t get mad at me, I’m just SAYING! Whatever Kevin’s inspiration was did not translate to the Runway. The collection was uninspired, bland, and out and out boring. The play on texture looked like a child’s craft project gone horribly wrong.

The oversized trench coats are shapeless, and look like wardrobe stemming from a Sci-fi movie. I know the 90’s are back but I wish Carrigan would have gone down to the basement and pulled a dusty collection off the rack. What happened to the ultra-chic minimalist that was Calvin Klein? You be the judge! You can view the entire Calvin Klein 2010 Fall Menswear collection at www.Style.com and at Calvin Klein’s official website www.CalvinKlein.com.

Stand out trends; the tailored dress pant with the lace-up boot. The mix of leather, tweed, camel hair, with hits of fur, plaid, and velvet are pure genius. I’d like to give mention to the panel detailing on the blazers, the equestrian inspired boots, and the chunky knits sweaters. OH and did I mention bags, bags and more bags? Why, because boys have stuff to carry too! I’m just saying! The over-size back-packs, and the classic all leather messenger bags in matching color palette of the collection with the classic Louis Vuitton (LV) monogram looking just as chic now as it did in 1854! Let’s Kick It!

OR THE MAN Boots are back! And they are not just for riding motorcycles or cleaning up the basement after a flood! This fall season it is all about the tucking! Not the stomach, the pant into the boot! We are seeing a borage of ankle boots, mid calf boots and even a knee high riding boots for men! The boot is the only accessory that you will need this fall season. Texture is every where for men this season, which is good! Texture will bring depth to your wardrobe and make you stand out from the crowd. This trend has been passed down to the boot, along with great hardware and color. Here are my top picks for the "kick it trend" which you can find online at www.yoox.com and for the ladies who may be reading this, it's a kick ass site for women too!

Don’t Sweat Me!

OR THE MAN

It's not the 1980's. It really is 2010! Which is what I discovered when I went on the hunt for some of the season's hottest sweaters. Sweaters are all the rage! People like Kanye west, Common and Pharrell Williams will be happy to know that! Those brothers are constantly rocking a tight (excuse the pun) sweater! What I find to be highly fashionable is the fact that the sweaters all have unique necklines and characteristics this fall 2010 season. You can find the trend almost anywhere! From Target to Saks Fifth Avenue, just mention the trend to a sales stylist and they should point you in the right direction! Did I hear a thank you? Don't "sweat it" yo!

Get The LOOK!

OR THE MAN No matter what they say, its a recession! It's the perfect time to learn how to create a "look" with basic items. Fashion works best when it has a theme. The theme, story and concept behind fashion is what elevates it to a art form instead of just a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. The theme that we have are going for, the look of the "urban cabin man". When you think of someone kickin' it in a cabin, you think of plaid, long underwear, denim shirts, and sleeping bags. When you think of someone urban you think of fresh cologne, great accessories and sleekness. We have combined these two looks for balance and the result is what you have below!

ON TREND The right denim is the foundation to a man’s look! The wrong denim can be the “ground work” for a complete failure. There are definite rules to jeans this Fall season. Check out the images below for options of trendy jeans for you to rock this Fall 2010 season! Here are the three popular cuts for this season! 1. Relaxed , 2. Slim-Skinny, 3. Rolled Hem It's a more beautiful Chicago one pair of men’s denim at a time! The rules of how to wear denim is a HUSH no longer. Relaxed jeans should be worn paired with a tighter top; i.e. a Henley, (ironed) fitted tee/ vest combo or tucked tee/blazer combo. This idea of contrast creates balance for the eye. Slim-Skinny should be worn with a boxy leather jacket, a textured sweater/button up combo, or a simple loose v neck t-shirt. The rolled hem presents a gray area, enter the right shoe. When thinking of shoes to rock with this jean, think laces or sleek.

Pride, and Tradition

are just a few of the

reasons why you might find a young lad in Scotland wearing a what some Americans would call a "skirt" and what most Europeans would call a “kilt. In larger American cities such as Chicago, you can find the kilt at your annual Saint Patrick's Day Parade and at your high society Irish wedding. This could be one of the reasons that most American's think of the kilt as more of a costume rather than a garment suitable for everyday wear. The kilt is far from a costume, it is a garment that personifies the spirit of men in the most natural way possible.

under Kilts are no costume! Men wore kilts in places like Scotland dating back to the 16th Century. There are over 1,180,000 hits for the word “kilt once entered into a Google search and over 200 manufactures who specialize in making traditional formal and informal kilts. There is even a "kilt" season in Scotland! During the annual Highland Games (a Olympics of sorts) you will see scores of men wearing them and playing traditional Highland Games in kilts just as they did centuries ago. Yes, for the Super Bowl of Scotland, the men all wear kilts! They are proud to do so! Kilts are made in a meticulous fashion. Using 6-8 yards of fabric, a 2-2 type twill woven wool and weighing upwards to 18 ounces, making the kilt a very heavy garment to wear.

IMAGES BY: RICHARD FINDLAY from his Kilted Life Collection www.fotoflingscotland.co.uk

(HCM PG74)

Kilts also differ in color and pattern by region. Kilts in Ireland are much different from kilts in Scotland and so forth. Kilts also are traditionally worn with accessories and there is a unique way of of proper dress.

s i h For supporting statistics in writing this article, I reached out to Hector Russell. Hector Russell has been providing kilts to the proud men of Scotland for over 50 years. Recognizing my ignorance for the true meaning behind the kilt, the fine folks at Hector Russell encouraged me to check out two websites, kiltmen.com and fotoflingscotland.co.uk. Kiltmen.com exposed me to another entity in reference to the kilt. Most men who wear the garment feel it is their right as true Scotsmen to do so. Traditionally the kilt should be worn without any underwear. This allows men to be free and unrestricted. In fact some Scotsmen consider trousers to be "tyranny" citing that trousers confine the one thing that makes a man a man.

skirt

A look AT ONE OF THE MOST MASCULINE GARMENTS FOR MEN!

Eager to see the photographs that depicted this notion, I instantly fell in love with the images I saw from the collection entitled a Kilted Life by Richard Findlay. Mel Gibson in Braveheart, Marc Jacobs on the runway and even the men who walk in Chicago's much hyped Saint Patrick's Day parade wearing kilts, have nothing on these men who epitomize masculinity while wearing what we Americans call a "pleated skirt"! Richard Findlay, is a law professional by day. He shoots with a Canon SLR 5D + 20D + Tii 500D and a Ixus 40. He has an unique way of processing his images, with one glance you can feel the color jump out at you! Richard is a quick shooter and seems to have no problem capturing a moment containing feeling and pride.

On review of his collection, I got the feeling that Mr. Findlay looks for photo opportunities to present that strong masculine pride which has been passed down to new generations dating back several centuries.

IMAGES BY: RICHARD FINDLAY from his Kilted Life Collection www.fotoflingscotland.co.uk

Images from fotoflingscotland.co.uk are nothing short of stunning! He shows you the fashionable side of the kilt which is deeply rooted in Scottish history! Men were wearing kilts with sweatshirts, t-shirts and work boots as if the kilt was a jean pant. It is the jean of Scotland! Be sure to check out Facebook fan page where we will post my one on one interview with this recognized Highland Game photographer! There is nothing more masculine than a kilt!

Meet Chicago Fashion Icon

When

women decide to take on a

masculine job, it comes as no surprise that they have to be good to earn respect from their male peers. Some women get lost in the cycle of earning respect that they forget their own individual unique personal style and fashion sense. Chicago Celebrity DJ Sun Dance is clearly not one of those women! Which is why Chicago's "tightest" female DJ is our Chicago Fashion Icon for the month of October! I got a chance to interview one of my good friends, Sun Dance (born Erika Campbell) while she was spinning in an all Female DJ set at The Family Den Lounge on Chicago's South side. Sun Dance has earned the right to be called Chicago's "tightest" Female DJ. She was the first female to ever DJ on Chicago's infamous V103 Radio Station, a position that she held for 10 years! She also has a gold record for her house hit "Get Up." (certified by RIAA and Billboard) At age 17, she was touring around the world, she served as a celebrity judge for the Fox Morning News segment Chicago Idol and has won countless awards while maintaining a career as a hairstylist and makeup artist.

Sun Dances' style is extremely unique. She dresses from the hairstyle down! Her one of a kind hairstyles and her signature hot pink eyeshadow have become her trademark. She does not disappoint! Short hair, long hair, shaved head..she is not afraid to show what she feels inside! Sun Dance has a loyal base of party goers who love to hear her sets! She has fellow Chicago Celeb/TV Judge, Greg Images Courtesy of FACEBOOK Profile Pictures Mathis dancing! Sun Dance is his official wrap party DJ. Giving us a double dose of music, and style is why we consider her to be a Chicago Fashion Icon!

O: I know that you love music and that you inherited a huge record collection from your Uncle, this may not be a fair question, but I have to ask it! Lol! Do you have a favorite genre of music? S: I do! I love anything old school! If it has that soul from back in the day, that is what I love to hear! O: I am sure that is what made you a perfect fit for V103, where you were a very popular radio personality. I would catch your show from time to time, I loved you on the radio! S: Thanks so much! O: Tell me about your best or worst caller. S: I had a suicide call. It was actually my best and worst call. The caller was upset about a relationship that had gone bad. I stayed on the phone with the caller my entire shift! I successfully talked her out of ended her life. I can remember when I was really lonely and I lived through the radio. I believed that the DJ was talking to me and only me. This is what made me become a fan of radio! O: Is it safe to say that you have many fans who love you, correct? S: Actually no, I don't consider people to be my fans. Fans are fanatical. I have

people that are my homeboys and my homegirls. They give me love and I give love right back to them.

(HCM PG84)

O: So you don't consider yourself to be a "celebrity?" S: I actually don't. I always say, I hang around extraordinary people which makes me feel like I am the only one who is ordinary. O: What a wonderful thing to say about the people in your circle! O: You have traveled all over the world, what one place stands out the most? S: Munich Germany. I was there when the Berlin Wall came down and it was something that I will never forget! O: Let's talk about this tattoo you have. Its a sleeve which is highly visible when you are scratching on the turn tables! What is the story behind the tattoo? S: The tattoo actually started as a mistake, from a cover up to be exact and it just evolved from there! I let my tattoo artist do his thing and this is the result. O: So, you are going to be the Hush Chicago Magazine Chicago Fashion Icon for October! Congratulations! S: Thanks, Ogi O: Your style is so unique and it's obvious that your style is from hair to fashion! How do you get inspired to create your hair looks? S: Well, I started off as a hairstylist! I continued to do hair even as a DJ on V103! I would have women calling the station wanting to make a hair appointment! Lol! I enjoy wearing hair styles that the average everyday woman wishes that she could have. I am not afraid to wear color in my hair or to wear it short one day and long the next. O: In terms of fashion, what is your style? S: I was a tom boy growing up! I wanted to do everything my uncle did. So I have a splash of rocker glam in my style mixed with a funky 70's vibe. O: what is next for Sun Dance? S: I would love to have my own show on a satellite radio station. I am also about to develop my own tv reality show, I am looking forward to the future! You can check out Sun Dance on Facebook and at her online radio station!

One thing associated with masculinity is the cigar! When we think of strong and powerful men, we tend to visualize them smoking one. Hush Chicago Magazine has never done anything cliche and we never will. Instead of doing a fashion photo shoot with a girl and a Cigar, we decided to review a Cuban Cafe. Enter, 90 Miles Cuban Cafe on Armitage.

Once you enter, you can feel the strength of Cuban people, specifically Cuban Americans. Perhaps it has a lot to do with the proud Cuban heritage. It slaps you in your face as soon as you sit at your table! In fact the entire place looks like a cafe in Havana. You can easily forget that you are in Chicago. Cuban newspapers line the walls and beautiful Cuban art is displayed all around the Cafe.

Cuba in Chicago

has a masculine flair at 90 Miles Cafe While I was there, I could not help but notice a mostly all male wait staff. Well put together hotties to say the least. The food comes up fast and hot! Water is served in a mason jar. Your bill comes with a small paper bag instead of the black tray with a visa/mastercard logo. After I accepted the fact that I had left Chicago and that I was in a new land, I decided to have my favorite Cuban dish. Something that I knew I could really give a great opinion on. Our Food & Travel Editor was currently out of town, so I was delighted to take on this assignment! I LOVE Cuban Food! Cuban Chicken, Black Beans, Rice and Fried Plantains. This is a dish that I know well, something that I can actually make myself. That is what I ordered.

The restaurant seems to service a diverse crowd and that suits the owner just fine! Alberto Gonzalez has the passion for his native Cuba and the food that he remembers. The smell is fantastic, the food is freshly made and his establishment has just the right mix of America and Cuba. I got a tour of the restaurant and the back house is filled with chefs from Cuba who know how to cook all of Alberto’s time honored family recipes! There is a trendy city patio and there is also a back cabana. The back cabana makes you want to be there forever! There are two fireplaces. One that is eco-friendly and resides on the flatscreen tv and a real one that comes to life in the winter months. The tables are made with old doors. When you knock on the table, you can hear the sound of real oak wood!

(HCM PG91)

For centerpieces, Alberto uses vintage/antique sewing machines, typewriters and telephones because they remind him of home. His customers all looked very much at home, relaxed and cozy! Okay, so let's talk about the food!, Very impressive. Some may think that you cannot go wrong with Cuban Chicken, but you can! I have tasted Cuban chicken with too much garlic, onions that are sauteed to a rubber content and chicken that is tough to chew. This was NOT the case. All I could taste was the freshness. The rice (one of the hardest things on earth to cook!) was wonderful. Just right! The fried plantains were delightful and just seemed to melt in my mouth. My waiter (a dream boat!) Oscar, noticed I was looking at the hanging chalkboard menu, and quickly commented.."what do else do you see that you want to try"!

(HCM PG92)

Cuba in Chicago

I made a mental note, excellent customer service! Introducing customers to a new food choice is a great way to keep them coming back! The shake was amazing! My experience was amazing as well! So I am inclined to want to experience the taste of Cuba right here in Chicago any day! I will encourage you to do the same!

editor’s note

If you have read every issue of Hush Chicago Magazine up to this point, then you are well aware of the strength of this issue. Unlike most fashion Mags, Hush Chicago Magazine is a different magazine all together! We have masculine elements to what we do. There is nothing soft, prime or proper about Hush Chicago Magazine. I decided that this magazine would be its own man and never follow in it's fashion forefathers footsteps. The sign of a real man is not the number of times he fails, but the number of times that he get's back up from that failure! Every month we are subject to failure, we are subject to criticism and every month we get right back up better than before, in similar fashion of a young man reaching for his destiny! His very fashionable destiny! We are all about the fashion around here, and we believe that it is the basis of our manhood. It should also be the basis for whom you are and your own unique individual view. 30% of Hush Chicago Magazine readers are male! Which is a true sign that we are not our father's fashion magazine. Hush Chicago Magazine mixes fashion with socialism and not fashion with fantasy. This gives us an unique edge while we create a new genre and our own niche in the fashion industry. Socialism is non-gender. Do not copy what we do. We recommend that you have the balls to be fearless and think outside the box no matter how crazy someone thinks it is! Hush Chicago Magazine has stayed true to original ideas and presenting Chicago and Fashion in an entirely different way! We have earned respect! Our layouts are easy on the eye, direct and to the point. Clean cut just like a well dressed man! What better way to honor this metaphor, than with an issue dedicated to all things masculine! Men are taking a more prominent role in fashion and fashion insiders have taken notice. Chicago is the perfect place to explore fashion for men! We have an active social scene here and four seasons for men to take advantage of from a fashionable stand point. So look for the next issues of Hush Chicago Magazine to be stronger and more focused, Hush has happened and man oh man, I am so glad it did! Don't you just LOVE a good HUSH? - Ogi Merzier
