Of course, everyone is invited to come to downtown Hutchinson early in the afternoon Friday to walk Main Street from Third to Avenue B and check out the show cars, watch the vendor demonstrations and grab a cold drink and something to eat for Happy Hour from one of the local restaurants or from one of the two Rod Run Food Courts. King Midas Appears on Rod Run Stage
I
t’s always a great event when King Midas and the Muflers take the stage to play oldies, songs of the 50s, 60s, and 70s - Rock and Roll music! They’re a happy band who always plays songs that were popular, songs that people like and remember, songs that allow people to sing along. This group of seven accomplished musicians, considered by many fans as “a true pillar of Midwest music history,” will entertain Downtown Hutchinson Rod Run & Classic Car Show visitors on Saturday, October 6, 2012 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm on the Rod Run Stage at First & Main Street. This music will be piped through the four 15ft. tall speakers set in each intersection downtown so that everyone will hear the music as they walk through the Event District and admire the hundreds of show cars parked from Third to Avenue B. King Midas was organized in 1965, as a fourpiece group, and was originally named King Midas & the Muflers. In 1966, the group became an eight-piece show band, performing in a sixstate area, billed as the King Of The Show Bands. The group released two records in the late 1960’s, “Get Down With It” & “Mellow Midnight.” They were recently inducted to the Kansas Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Everyone is invited to this free performance. Downtown restaurants will be open for dinner during the performance as will the two Rod Run Food Courts - at Avenue A Park or at DCI Park, so come, stay awhile and enjoy the evening!

H
ot Rods and Art…Who would’a thought? It all started with cats in the windows of the Downtown Hutchinson Rod Run van – art created by California artist Don Roth. The paintings are a true “labor of love” for the artist, which were done with his beloved cat “Mr. Leo” by his side. Mr. Leo actually was the inspiration for the “Kool Kat” series. Each of his paintings is highly detailed, nostalgic, and whimsical, painstakingly executed in Acrylic paint in an extremely precise technique often incorporating an airbrush, which, unlike other “cat art” gives these magnificent images the look of an actual photograph. Mr. Roth has sent ten of his famous original cat paintings for display and sale during the Rod Run event. If you’re an art collector or a cat fancier, you won’t want to miss these clever paintings of Kool Kat, Kahuna Cat, Kitty Kanoe and Salmon too and others from his Kool Cat Kollection. Come downtown to see these works on display and for sale October 5, 6, and 7 at Nicholaus Jewelry & Design, 119 S. Main Street, or go to the Kool-Kat website, Kool-Kats.com. The works on display will include: “Gondola Romance,” signed & numbered, Giclee on canvas, limited edition print, 30” x 30,” framed to 34 ½”x 34 ½”. “Kool-Kat Snow Boarder,” original acrylic on canvas, 24” x 30”, framed to 30” x 35 ¾”.

Car Show will benefit Hutchinson Career & Technical Education Academy Students MEETING ONE OF OUR GOALS Since the very first Downtown Hutchinson Rod Run in 2008, the board of directors of the 50l(c)3 corporation, Hutchinson Rod Run, Inc., has sought a program to focus on and support that would help develop some new “gear heads” in the community. According to event organizer Jerry Regier, “I think we’ve found it!” THE HUTCHINSON CAREER & TECHNICAL EDUCATIONAL ACADEMY The Automotive Technology and Collision Repair Technology programs are among those that are a part of a merger between Hutchinson Public Schools/Hutchinson Career and Technical Educational Academy and Hutchinson Community College. Automotive Technology I & II are designed to teach the necessary knowledge and skills in the field of auto technology to students interested in being employed as an automotive technician. Collision Repair Technology I & II are designed to teach students the basic skills of the collision repair trade. Both classes are open to eleventh and twelfth grade students from Hutchinson High School, as well as to those from Hutchinson Community College. Each course carries 16 credit hours toward a Hutchinson Community College degree. OUR DONATION According to Jim Gruver, president of Hutchinson Rod Run, Inc., and owner of Cabinet Connections in downtown Hutchinson, two Class of 2013 students of Hutchinson High School who participate in the Hutchinson Career & Technical Education Academy (HCTEA) will each receive $250.00 in scholarship money to enable them to continue their study in Automotive Technology or Collision Repair Technology as freshmen at Hutchinson Community College in 2013. The scholarships will be administered by the HCTEA. Hutchinson Rod Run, Inc. will also donate $500.00 to the HCTEA to help defray the expenses of their students traveling to Kansas City, MO. for the 49th Annual National Leadership & Skills Conference, a showcase of career and technical education stu-
dents, in June 2013. SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. The mission of SkillsUSA is to help its members become world-class workers, leaders and responsible American citizens. At the conference the students will have an opportunity to attend educational sessions which may include professional development, legislative updates, occupational and technical career trends and program overviews. The SkillsUSA Championships will allow outstanding career and technical education students – all state contest winners – to compete hands-on in 94 different trades, technical and leadership fields. Students from the Hutchinson Career and Technical Academy qualified in four areas for nationals last year and brought home a number of awards. Students from the Automotive Technology and Collision Repair Technology classes at HCTEA will be on hand at the Rod Run event this October to help organizers with traffic flow and parking coordination. A check will be presented to the Hutchinson Career & Technical Education Academy’s Director, David Patterson at the Awards Ceremony in Memorial Hall on Sunday, October 7.
