Introduction
This monograph is the result of an international research project conducted by the Institute of European Studies at the Faculty of Journalism and Political Science, University of Warsaw and the “Observatorio de los Gobiernos de Coalición” of the Departament of Constitutional Law and Political Science at the University of Barcelona. The aim of the authors was to present Poland and Spain as subjects of contemporary international relations through the prism of their internal transformation, activity in the foreign sphere, and commitment to the integration of the countries on the European continent. The focus of the authors therefore embraces the following themes: political transformation, the evolution of foreign policy and European integration. The structure of the book was conceived on the basis of a ‘mirror image’, meaning that all the aforementioned topics were discussed in light both of the Polish and Spanish experiences. As a result, the authors were able to find answers to the following questions: (1) what were the conditions and the course of the transition in Spain?; (2) what were the specific features of the Polish transformation?; (3) how did Spain’s foreign policy evolve?; (4) what conditioned the evolution of foreign policy in Poland?;

Poland and Spain: from Political Transition to European Integration
(5) what route did Spain take to European Union accession?; (6) what problems did Poland encounter almost twenty years later on its way to the same destination? We hope that this monograph will give the reader an insight into the recent history of Poland and Spain and their activity in the international arena. Although distant in geographical terms, many parallels can be found between these countries, and we strongly encourage all readers to consider these similarities.
