Someone is on your side. No one is alone. INTO THE WOODS, "No One Is Alone"
DEAR FRIEND, Welcome to the 2019 Season of the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival! Every spring for more than three decades, people in this community have welcomed the return of the HVSF tent to the magnificent grounds of Boscobel House and Gardens. Folks might catch a glimpse of it from the train, or spot it from across the river at West Point, or crane their necks while driving by on Route 9D. It’s an annual sign that another long winter is behind us, and that summer will soon be here. It’s also a perfect example of the ways in which this theater company has become an integral part of this community, and vice versa. This tent is a communal space, a place where we are present together. Take a moment right now and look around you. Throughout the performance, you will be sharing time and space with other audience members, measuring your own reactions against theirs, laughing together at the same jokes, or perhaps responding quite differently to certain moments. In this space, we are constantly reminded that no one is alone. Each person’s unique perspective is just one of many. We are each part of a larger whole. Our 2019 Season is bursting with humor and heart. These classic stories are not merely frivolous, nor are they all doom and gloom. Though centuries old, they speak to our current fraught American moment. What solace, inspiration, or wisdom might they offer us today? A wider perspective is often a powerful antidote to seemingly intractable problems. Or, at very least, is a reminder that others have been here before us, and we’re all in this together. On behalf of Managing Director Kate Liberman, our company of artists, our staff, and our Board, I want to thank you for joining us under this big, beautiful tent. Whether it’s your first time, or you’ve been a part of this community for decades, this theater belongs to you, and we are delighted you are here. Enjoy! Warmly,
Davis McCallum, Artistic Director
