Overview A sacrifice refers to an act of sacrificing oneself for the benefit of others and the public interest without asking for compensation. If people pursue only their interests, dispute and division will occur and it will cause conflicts and wars. Therefore, we need to have the spirit of sacrifice to achieve a world of peace. To practice sacrifice, what kind of mindset do we need? Suppose we recognize the sacrifice of our parents and those around us and perceive we can have civilization today because of the sacrifice of our ancestors. In that case, we can also have the spirit of sacrifice. However, we go against the spirit of sacrifice if we do it for wrong purposes, such as the war of aggression, terrorism, or forcing the weak to sacrifice. Care must be taken not to cause such wrong sacrifices. Small sacrifices in everyday life for the purpose of life and peace become a ray of light that illuminates the dark world.

Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Gautama Siddhartha Buddha (founder of ancient Buddhism. 624 BC-544 BC)

1. The various types of sacrifice

We can find sacrifices in nature. Chickens that we commonly see are maternal birds. It is very moving to see a chicken incubating an egg without moving for about 20 days in the cold or the heat. They move only once to feed or defecate, and Section is sacrifice, and why do we need it?

How children develop is based on the parent’s dedicated efforts. Furthermore, they need help from their teachers, friends, as well as many around them. Therefore, we have to recognize our parent’s sacrifice, and the efforts of many are residing in our lives. It is the same for society. Big and small sacrifices come together to make this world more peaceful. Let us understand the true value of sacrifice and reflect on why it is needed.

Mother hens at times pluck their breast hairs to maintain 37.5℃ which is an ideal temperature for eggs to hatch, and talks to her chicks that are still in the egg. Even after the chick hatch, the mother hen feeds the babies before herself. When it rains, it protects its babies under her wings, so she receives the rain stead. In 2011, researchers at the University of Bristol from the U.K. suggested that mother hens empathized with their chicks’ pain.1) They released a puff of air to the chicks to create a stressful environment, and as the mother hens watched, the heart rate increased, and their external temperature decreased along with the chicks. In this way, the mother hen demonstrates a devoted sacrifice for her children.

Raphidophora is a plant that lives in tropical areas and makes holes in its leaves. As Rhaphidophora winds up on other trees, the upper leaves naturally block the sun rays from reaching the lower leaves. Raphidophora, therefore, makes holes in its leaves to allow sunlight to pass through, so the young Raphidophora that is growing from the bottom can

A key foundation for the modern awareness of human rights began with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, UDHR. It took a lot of dedication and hard work for this documentation to be recognized as a universal declaration. Initially, an eight-member drafting committee began writing the declaration, and they unintentionally had written some parts centered on a western perspective. In response, nonWestern countries such as Chile, Panama, the Philippines, Uruguay, Egypt, India, Lebanon, and China became interested and actively promoted the perspectives of their own respective culture. The drafting committee humbly listened to the opinions and cast 1,400 votes for over two years to determine each word and article of the proclamation. Rather than pursuing convenience and efficiency, the committee wrote to protect all humanity’s lives and human rights. As a result, on

Gerald S. Wilkinson, an American ethologist, and professor of biology at the University of Maryland, studied vampire bats.2) Vampire bats feed on the blood of the livestock at night, but sometimes they return after failing to hunt. The other bats would then help by sharing blood. It shares blood not to a mother-child relationship but also to fellow bats that are nonkin. A full vampire bat may even go out to search for fellow bats that are hungry to share blood, and the group of vampire bats shuns those that frequently refuse to share. Like this, we can observe sacrifices even in nature.

The roots of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights is the Déclaration des droits de l’Homme et du citoyen published in August 1789, after the French Revolution. It is a historic declaration that proclaims the sovereignty of the individual and the equality of all people based on the values of freedom, equality, and fraternity. However, there were many challenges before the contents of this declaration became realized. The French Revolution brought in an era in which people directly voted to elect their representatives, but the right to vote was granted only to French males over 25. The country did not regard women as citizens and also excluded nonwhites from voting. At this time, a French women’s activist Olympe de Gouges emphasized that women should have equal rights with men to participate. However, surprisingly, the author of the Déclaration des droits de l’Homme et du citoyen accused Gouges of not having a mindset suitable for women. Eventually, she was charged for dividing the people’s representatives and restoring the royal power and went to the guillotine in 1793. In response to this case, Paris District Attorney Pierre Gaspard Chaumett said: “Remember that haughty woman who abandoned the care of her household to involve herself in the republic, and whose head fell under the avenging blade of the laws. (Rappelez-vous cette virago, cette femme-homme, l’impudente Olympe de Gouges qui abandonna tous les soins du ménage, voulut politiquer […] Cet oubli des vertus de son sexe l’a conduite à l’échafaud.)” However, until the moment she climbed the guillotine, Guzman proudly exclaimed that if

women have the right to mount the scaffold, she should have the right to mount the rostrum. As time passed, her courageous deeds were re-examined as a noble spirit of sacrifice. Gouge’s sacrifice in raising her voice to protect women’s rights to the end significantly impacted the guarantee of women’s suffrage in future generations. Like this, we live in this modern life, and for the advancement of humanity and human rights, there was a sacrifice of someone who endured hardship.

2) Love requires sacrifice

The Gift of the Magi by an American short story writer O. Henry is about a couple who loved each other very much. Although the couple was poor, they each had one possession they considered their treasures: Jim’s treasure was a gold pocket watch inherited from his grandfather, and Della’s

To understand the need for sacrifice, we have to first see from where everything we enjoy comes. First, everything related to human survival comes from nature. Food, clothing, houses were all sourced from nature. As everyone is born empty-handed, the products of the efforts of my ancestors and others are the culture and technology, etc., that I enjoy and the overcoming of civilization. In particular, people have no choice but to entirely rely on their parents or those around them for food, clothing, and shelter until they grow up and become independent. I can see that numerous indirect and direct sacrifices supported my safety and happiness by taking these facts together. If I don’t forget the sacrifices of nature, parents, or others that do not ask for compensation, I can have the heart to make sacrifices for future generations. Let us sacrifice our today so that our children can have a better tomorrow. Abdul Kalam (11th President of India. 1931-2015)

Parents’ love for their children requires sacrifice. At times, even love between a man and a woman needs sacrifice. There are times when we have to make sacrifices to protect the country and family we love. This sacrifice is the pinnacle of love. Sacrifice goes beyond the temporary feelings of love or unilateral expression of love but conveys an unforgettable deep emotion to the other person. It is impossible to love deeply without sacrifice.

treasure was her long, beautiful brown hair. It was Christmas Eve, and Della wanted to buy a perfect gift for her husband, Jim, but she only had $1.87 in her hand. It was also the money she had collected without spending it like a miser for several months. After much consideration, she cut her long hair and sold it for $20. She then prepared a platinum chain that matched Jim’s gold pocket watch as a gift. When Jim came home in the evening, he was surprised to see Della’s hair cut short. It was because Jim had prepared a Christmas gift of beautiful hair combs for Della’s hair. Della comforted Jim that her hair grows fast. Then she showed Jim the gold chain she prepared by cutting her hair. Jim said, “I sold the watch to get the money to buy your combs.” They had each sold their most precious treasures to give each other the perfect Christmas gift.

Great achievement is usually born of great sacrifice, and is never the result of selfishness. Napoleon Hill (American writer, 1883-1970)

A sacrifice to achieve peace contains hope so we can endure any difficulties during its process. On the other hand, sacrifices that hope for something else other than peace are not only short-lived, but they can also cause harm to ourselves and others. Let’s see examples of true and incorrect sacrifices to understand what it means to sacrifice for peace.

In the 1940s, there was an outbreak of polio globally, a disease that causes the muscles to shrink gradually, resulting in the paralysis of limbs and, in severe cases, even death. At that time, there was no treatment yet, so the epidemic continued. In 1952 alone, about 58,000 cases were reported, with the deaths of more than 3,000 children. are sacrifice and peace connected?

Various pharmaceutical companies then rushed to offer Dr. Salk a large sum of money for the patent rights to the vaccine, enough to make him rich overnight. In this situation, Dr. Jonas Edward Salk devoted himself to developing a vaccine. From 1948, he spent 16 hours a day without taking a day off, and his devotion continued for years.

Finally, in November 1953, Dr. Salk succeeded in developing the first vaccine. However, it was difficult to find those to partake in the clinical trial, and thus, he first experimented on himself. After additional clinical trials, it was not until 1955 that Dr. Salk proved his vaccine was safe and effective.

Today, Hansen’s disease, also known as ‘leprosy,’ is curable, but it was considered a highly contagious and infectious disease for many years. Therefore, those with leprosy were isolated from society to live independently in villages and received stigmatism by many people. vaccines that saved lives were not only valuable but priceless. What would have happened if Dr. Salk had sold the patent to a company that offered a large sum of money? The company would have sold the vaccines at a high price because of its large investment, beating its competitors, and thousands of children who did not have access to the vaccine may have died. However, Dr. Salk’s Sacrifice and love for humanity enabled the distribution of vaccines worldwide, and polio has been nearly eradicated from the world today.3) As we can see from this example, a true sacrifice does not ask for compensation or focus on the loss. The result of such sacrifice brings happiness to many people.

2. Sacrifice and Peace 15

The first of the sacrifices for the wrong purpose is a sacrifice that asks for compensation. As the word sacrifice implies that it does not ask for anything in return, the act of asking for compensation is no longer considered a sacrifice. Furthermore, even if it began with pure intentions, the meaning of sacrifice fades away when compensation is demanded. A typical example is requesting compensation from the recipient after donating hematopoietic stem cells or organs. As the recipient of hematopoietic stem cells or organs, it is difficult to refuse the donor’s request, who is like a lifesaver, no matter how

1966, respectively. At the young age of 20, they came to a foreign land of no connection and started caring for those with Hansen’s Disease, whom many avoided until old age. However, the two nurses did not think of their achievements as significant. They were reluctant to be featured to the public and declined the offer to make a movie of their biographies, to the extent that very few records of them remain. How were they able to dedicate and serve for 43 years? “We didn't do anything special. The purpose of serving as a nurse is to treat patients. Many say we must have a hard time, but I was the happiest while on Sorok Island.” The two confessed that they were merely faithful to their duties as nurses. The confession of the two nurses that they did not consider the sacrifice as troublesome but instead felt joy and happiness in their roles shames the selfish image of modern people who do concede even to a small thing nor to sacrifice.

The second is the case of committing and sacrificing to something that is ethically and morally wrong. In 1957, during the Cold War era, when countries sought to prove the superiority of each system through an arms race, the Soviet Union successfully launched the world’s first artificial satellite, Sputnik-1, into space. Americans were so shocked that the term ‘Sputnik Shock’ was coined in the United States. The U.S. Air Force carried out a secret plan called Project A119 to launch a nuclear weapon on the moon from an undisclosed location to restore its morale. The intent was to demonstrate the capabilities of the United States by causing a nuclear explosion on the moon and creating a lunar mushroom cloud that is 60 km high and 30 to 40km wide. Although the United States was committed to the project and succeeded in creating a hydrogen bomb, it was too heavy to be propelled to the moon. However, the U.S. Air Force did not give up on the project and continued developing right before the launch. In 1959, U.S. Air Force eventually canceled the project. It is a nonsensical plan when we think about it today, but during that time, it was a large project in which ten prominent scientists participated for many years. There were many dedications and sacrifices of the scientists in developing weapons and integrating the best technologies of that time within such a short period. If the project was successful, would the world have been in awe of it as intended? Perhaps the future generations would have been astonished.

2) A Sacrifice of the socially disadvantaged demanded by force Boule de Suif, written by a French short story writer Guy de Maupassant, illustrates a fragmented aspect of human nature and society forcing sacrifices on the weak. The book’s setting takes place during the period of the Franco-Prussian War in the 19th century. On a cold winter’s day, ten men set off in a carriage to escape the French city of Rouen that became occupied by the Prussian army. Among the ten were: a count and countess, a merchant couple, a bourgeoisie couple, two nuns, a Democratic revolutionary, and a prostitute nicknamed ‘Boule de Suif.’ At first, the people were ashamed to ride in the same carriage as the prostitute, but when Boule de Suif offered to share her food with the rest who didn’t bring enough provisions, they loosened their guards towards her. As they conversed with Boule de Suif, they recognized her to be a virtuous woman and patriotic. However, upon arrival at the inn, trouble arose. The Prussian soldier demanded Boule de

confirmed that those who committed such historical atrocities were neither fanatics nor antisocial but rather ordinary people who obeyed the instructions. If we do not correctly judge whether the purpose of the sacrifice is for the sake of or harms the peace, we can repeat the same mistakes. In particular, young adults mobilized for wars of aggression and terrorism often cannot distinguish whether their sacrifices are for the correct or wrong purpose. More important than the act of sacrifice is its purpose and the result achieved through the sacrifice. A sacrifice that causes suffering and death and breaks peace cannot be called noble. Sacrifice for life, coexistence, and peace is the true value of a sacrifice.

Suif to spend the night with him and forbade them to continue their journey unless she conceded. Being a strong patriotic woman, Boule de Suif strongly refused his demands to give her body to an enemy officer. The travelers commended her initially for such a decision, but as their travels held up for a day or two, they began to persuade Boule de Suif. They became angry that she would refuse a man, unlike her profession as a prostitute implies, while others emphasized that it would be a noble sacrifice of one person for many. Eventually, after a nun tells her that God will forgive the sins committed with a noble purpose, Boule de Suif agrees to the Prussian officer’s request. The following day, the travelers resumed their journey, and Boule de Suif hurriedly got into the carriage without preparing anything to eat. However, the people now glanced at her scathingly. They saw Boule de Suif as filthy and refused to share their food. Boule de Suif breaks down in the corner of the carriage throughout the journey and sheds tears of sadness, anger, and shame. This story depicts absurd practices and social dualism of forcing sacrifices on those who are socially disadvantaged, the falsehood, and the selfishness of society. Unfortunately, these occurrences are still happening worldwide. The act of forceful sacrifices on the weak weakens the trust and bonds amongst the members of society and causes problems of inequity and inequality. Throughout history, women were discriminated against and forcibly sacrificed, whether perceived as property or possessions or marginalized from education. Even today, women are often strongly socially disadvantaged. Furthermore, the physically weak, such as the elderly and children, are often forced to make sacrifices regardless of their will and cannot resist. Forcing the weak to make sacrifices is never for the

sake of peace. On the contrary, sacrificing the strong for the weak is consistent with the fundamental spirit and purpose of sacrifice. A sacrifice must be done voluntarily and must be for the purpose of achieving peace.

# How

When we hear the word sacrifice, we often feel burdened by losing or giving up something or assuming that only people born with righteousness can practice it. This is a sad prejudice against sacrifice. If you voluntarily practice sacrifice for peace, you can experience the value of sacrifice and the positive changes within yourself and those around you. Let us plan and implement a sacrifice for peace in the region or country where we live that can bring us happiness.

more the need for a Sacrifice Project. Next, let’s share the types and examples of sacrifices. You can generate various ideas by listing your thoughts through brainstorming 4) and brainwriting.

Once you have decided on the project method, identify the relevant factors, such as the project location and the target audience. Then, you will assign appropriate roles to each team member, plan the detailed schedule of the project, and prepare the necessary goods and materials. When everything is ready, execute the project as planned. At this time, it is a good idea to keep a record of the project’s progress, and as the American educator John Dewey said, “We do not learn from experience, we learn from reflecting on experience.” You can understand the meaning of sacrifice more deeply if you share what you felt through the project, what you learned, and what you would like to reflect on your next project.

4 Brainstorming is a technique in which judgment is reserved while collecting ideas, and the key is to draw out as many ideas as possible.

5) Based on the ideas you shared, plan a specific method for the sacrifice project out of various methods of sacrifice such as volunteer work, donations, and relief work.

5 It’s also called silent brainstorming, where participants take turns writing down ideas.

Let’s share with your peers about the general project or make it known through social media. In 1966, a research team at Northwestern University conducted a study called ‘A lady in distress; The flat tire experiment.’ A car with a flat tire was parked on the road, and as the cars passed by, the driver sought help.6) Only 35% of the 100 vehicles stopped to provide assistance. In the next experiment, the team created the same situation, just 400m ahead of the first car and a man helping a broken car. The following experiment created the same situation, just 400m in front of the first car, where a man assisting the car was conspicuous to the passing traffic. After witnessing the helpful behavior, what would the drivers do when they see the broken car? Fifty-eight drivers had stopped

2. Diverse types of the practice of sacrifice

• Social protection of vulnerable groups: psychological counseling, hairdressing services, food provision, afterschool classes, etc.

1) Volunteering Volunteering refers to voluntary acts of the citizens to prevent and solve various social problems that occur in local communities. Volunteering is seen as a ‘sacrificial act’ because it is done voluntarily for the public without asking for compensation in return. The types of volunteering work we can partake in are very diverse.

• Environment-related: environmental maintenance activities, monitoring hazardous environment, recycling campaigns, etc.

• Social welfare and health: medical service, hospice, support for crime prevention activities, etc.

• Establishment of traffic control and order: Monitoring traffic law violations, safe driving campaigns, etc.

One of America’s leading industrialists for expanding the American steel industry, Andrew Carnegie, donated 90% of his fortune to charities. Of course, as a businessman, he received much criticism for stopping strikes and forcibly disabling the unions. At age 66, Carnegie sold his steel company to become a philanthropist and established more than 2,500 public libraries, focusing on education, culture, and the arts. He had a single goal to achieve world peace and thereby established Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in 1910 and operated it until the outbreak of World War I. Carnegie viewed the first half of his life as a period to accumulate wealth and

It is impossible to solve all social problems solely with the government’s efforts and policies but will require cooperation and help from the private sector. In particular, unlike government-level efforts, a private partnership is challenging to implement without love and spirit of sacrifice. Even a seemingly small sacrifice of one or two people can make a big impact on all people and become the force of energy to bring positive changes in society. Even a seemingly small sacrifice of one or two people can significantly impact all people and become the driving force to bring positive changes in society. Therefore, volunteering in the private sector has a more significant impact on social solidarity and strengthening a sense of community than government-level efforts.

2) Sharing and Donation

• International cooperation: interpretation and translation, disaster relief activities, etc. •

Road to Peace 26

There are many people worldwide who also participate in sharing and donating. The United Nations receives donations from organizations such as the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and UNICEF and conducts various projects. What mindset should I have to participate in sharing and donating? Based on the happiness I feel when I receive others’ help and sacrifice, I can also happily join in sharing and donating if I truly believe in the desirable actions of giving back to society. Even a small act of participating in sharing and donation can greatly comfort neighbors under challenging circumstances.

1) A sacrifice as a legacy for future generations

A passage from a poem by an English poet Laurence Binyon states, “Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning. We will remember them.” We pass on this spirit to future generations by commemoration and education in honor of the noble sacrifice.Everyyear on November 11 at 11 o’clock, there is a minute of silence toward Busan, South Korea, where the cemeteries of UN Veterans from 22 countries who gave their lives for peace during the Korean War are located. The United Nations Peacekeeping Forces consisted of volunteers from the armed forces of UN member states. At that time, they did not know nor have heard about Korea, but they came from distant

the latter half as a time to share it. Through his words, “The man who dies rich, dies disgraced,” it is apparent that he regarded philanthropy and sharing as extremely important.

countries to sacrifice their lives. The source of this sense of solidarity was ‘freedom’ and ‘protection of peace.’ There are many surviving veterans today who live difficult lives due to the aftermath of war injuries. However, they have pride in their acts of sacrifice for the sake of peace and experience happiness seeing the country they have protected. The Republic of Korea dedicated this noble sacrifice as an annual commemoration on the ‘International Memorial Day for UN Veterans’ and commemorates and educates the students.

Every year on September 18, HWPL also commemorates the dedication and value of peace through the commemoration of the World Peace Summit. As time progresses and generations change, future generations will not remember the many sacrifices of the past. Therefore, through various commemorative events and education, we need to reflect on the meaning of the sacrifices made for today. Through this, the value of sacrifice will shine, and future generations will be willing to devote themselves to peace.

2) The civilian sacrifice for peace

The value of sacrifice continues to live amongst us today through those who devote themselves for the sake of others. In different eras, many invasions and wars resulted in ruins, but the reason we can pursue world peace is thanks to the efforts of those who never gave up and gave constant efforts for peace. As of 2015, the number of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that are non-profit was estimated at 10 million worldwide. People who have carried out consistent humanitarian activities behind the scenes have served as the pillars of good throughout human history.

According to data released by the UN Volunteers, there are

deserves-be-countedcount-their-work-org/swvr/volunteers-https://www.unv. an estimated 970 million volunteers worldwide, and the hours they serve are equivalent to the working hours of more than 125 million full-time workers. Furthermore, when the value of volunteering is converted into money, it amounts to 1 trillion 348 million dollars, around 2.5% of the world’s economy.7) Of course, it is impossible to put a price on the value of volunteering as it is the result derived from time and effort contributing to peace and love. In addition, there are sacrifices and devotions in places unseen, such as local communities, homes, and schools, serving as a strong fence of protection around the world for peace.

Sacrifices that do not ask for compensation are one of the driving forces for the development in the history of mankind. The sacrifice of parents protected the children, that of teachers and scholars advanced education and learning, that of leaders protected society and countries in times of crisis. On the other hand, families without the sacrifice of parents fell apart, education and learning without the sacrifice of teachers and scholars became stagnant, and societies and countries without the sacrifice of leaders eventually became corrupt and divided. We can witness this through the rise and fall of numerous civilizations and nations in history. In the 21st century, humanity has been enjoying the unprecedented prosperity of scientific and technological development, but the mental culture such as sacrifice appears to be declining. At a time when greed and selfishness undermine the value of sacrifice, we need to use history as our mirror to determine how to achieve sustainable development and peace objectively.Wemustnot forget the lesson of Tragedy of the commons. The tragedy of the commons is an analogy of how if every shepherd acting in their selfinterest brought his own flock to graze on the common field, it would

result in overconsumption. Similarly, if individuals have access to a shared resource but act on their self-interests, it can worsen the situation for society. We must remember that all countries and people are destined to share the earth from a macro perspective. Just as the proverb goes, “penny wise and pound foolish,” an individual should not act in his own interest and disregard the peace and well-being of the society. In today’s international society, we need a culture in which everyone takes the initiative and shares the burden and understands that though compromises and sacrifices may seem like losses at the moment, they will be beneficial in the long run. When small sacrifices gather, they become the force of energy big enough to change the world. Just as small lights gather to form great lights, let’s shed light on the path of peace by gathering our willingness to sacrifice.
