Overview

Courtesy is the expression of gratitude and respect for the other person through speech or behavior. Courtesy is necessary to build amicable relationships with others. Disrespectful words and actions make the other person feel insulted and cause quarrels or conflicts. It often happens between countries, which heightens the crises of war. Therefore, it is very important to respect each other to maintain peace, not only between individuals but also between countries. The external expression of courtesy is different for each country or ethnic group, but the inner meaning is the same regarding respect and consideration for the other person. Respect is a value of peace that all humanity must have to create a world of peace.

Let’s examine the fundamental spirit of respect through “respect for parents,” “respect for teachers,” and “respect and peace,” and the importance of respect as the culture of peace. Let’s create a peaceful society starting with me by being polite to our parents, teachers, and elders and expressing love and respect.

First your parents, they give you your life, but then they try to give you their life.

Chuck Palahniick (American novelist, 1962-present)

It is a universal value for all humanity that transcends time, region, and cultural differences to love and respect our parents because parents are those who gave life to their children. Let’s find out how precious the parents are to their children and how children should repay them for their love.

# Why do we need to love and respect our parents?

1) The parent-child relationship

Parents give birth and raise their children. Regarding the grace of parents who gave birth to our flesh, a 16th-century Korean philosopher, Yulkgok Yi, said, “There is nothing more precious on Earth than my body. This body was given to me by my parents.” Regarding the hard work of parents raising children, an American Writer Helen Steiner Rice said, “A mother’s love is something that no one can explain – It is

made of deep devotion and of sacrifice and pain.” A Buddhist scripture, the Parent’s Immerse Grace, explains in detail the kindness shown by parents. The kindness of bearing suffering during birth, the kindness of suckling the child at her breast and nourishing and bringing up the child, and the kindness of deep care and gratitude, etc. All these are the graces everyone in the world has received from their parents. We would not exist in this world if we did not have our parents who gave birth to and raised us. Parents are the most precious people who have given us life, and they are the closest people with whom we share our lives.

Parents teach their children fundamental attitudes and knowledge necessary for life through home education. Home education is important because it forms the child’s personality and social skills. Basic etiquettes, such as greetings and dining etiquette learned from parents in childhood, also affect the person’s life. Additionally, children do not learn only through education from their parents. “Children learn more from what you are than what you teach.” According to the words of the American human rights activist, William Edward Burghardt Du Bois, children learn from their parents’ personalities, attitudes, habits, and even gestures. Maria Montessori, the founder of Montessori education, defined a child’s mind from age zero to six as ‘The Absorbent Mind.’ She stated, “the ‘Absorbent Mind’ welcomes everything, puts its hope in everything, accepts poverty equally with wealth, adopts any religion and the prejudices and habits of its countrymen, incarnating all in itself. This is the child!” These words allow us to reflect how much influence a child will have from the parents with whom they spend most of their time.

In the 21st century, the worldwide fertility rate of children born outside of marriage is rising.

1) According to the 2018 data of the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD), the average births outside of marriage in OECD countries is 41% and 30-50% in most countries in Western Europe. However, not all who have children born outside of marriage are single parents because an increasing number of men and women, primarily in Europe, choose to live together instead of marrying. The region with the lowest rate of fertility outside of marriage was East Asia at 1.9% in Korea and 2.3% in Japan. The fertility rate outside of marriage in the United States is about 40%, and children who are born outside of marriage mostly live single mothers or are in foster care. The fertility rates outside of marriage in the United States were 16% for Asians, 29% for Whites, 53% for Hispanics, and 71% for Blacks. A 2017 report titled Love, Marriage, and Baby Carriage: The Rise in Unwed Child-bearing 2) by Mike Lee explains the various social problems with statistical data caused by the increase in births outside of birth. The following is from the report: “It is no denigration to parents or children in other types of family arrangements to recognize that the married-parent family is unsurpassed as an institution for child development. Statistical comparisons tell a very consistent story: on average, children raised outside of married-parent families generally have poorer outcomes compared to their peers raised in married-parent families. They have worse relationships with their parents, on average, particularly with their fathers. They are also far more likely to experience physical, emotional, or sexual abuse. They have poorer health, display more aggression, are more likely to engage

in delinquent behavior, have lower levels of educational achievement, and earn less as adults. They are also far more likely to live in poverty.” As such, the presence of parents greatly influences the physical and emotional growth of children. However, as a cultural change prioritizes individual freedom and happiness spreads worldwide, many changes have occurred in marriage, childbirth, and child-rearing. Of course, personal freedom and happiness are essential, but parents’ failure to fulfill their roles of unmarried fertility rates in 1964 2014

That is equally irresponsible as violating the rights of the following generation by recklessly destroying the environment. Here are some of the main reasons we should love and respect our parents: Parents give life to their children Parents raise their children Parents love their children and want them to be healthy and happy

Parental love is also present in the animal kingdom, but remembering and repaying parents’ love and grace are characteristics unique to humans. The heart to repay one’s parents for their kindness is called filial piety, and it is a universal value that transcends time and region to respect parents based on gratitude for their grace.

philosophy that “Between parents and children there should be closeness.” was recognized as the starting point of all morals, and ‘respect for parents’ was made the fundamental ideology of national management. However, respect for parents is not a value emphasized only in East Asia, a Confucian culture. Since ancient times, Greece has been well known for its strict culture of respecting the elders and parents. For example, in ancient Delphi, those who did not care for their parents were imprisoned. In Athens, people who neglected their parents or grandparents were fined and some would have their citizenship stripped away. Greek proverbs such as “Old people’s words are weighed with scales” and “He who respects his parents never dies” reflect a deep-rooted culture of respecting parents and elders. In addition, all cultures influenced by Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, and Judaism place social emphasis on respect for parents. At home, it is the best way and auspicious thing to serve parents as filial piety, to rule the house, to love the wife and children, to raise their children well, and not to do useless things.

3. The practice of respect for parents

1) A Jewish story of Dama In ancient Israel, a precious stone fell out of the High Priest’s breastplate. People went to find a man named Dama, son of Netina who had the same gem to find a replacement. They offered him 100 dinars for the jewel, and Drama accepted the offer. However, when he went to fetch the jewel, he discovered that he could not retrieve the jewel without waking up his father. Dana returned empty-handed and told them he could not sell the jewel because he could not wake up his sleeping father. They offered again to buy the jewel for ten times the price of 1,000 dinars, but Dama did not wake up his father. When the father finally awoke, Dama brought them the jewel, and they offered to pay 1,000 dinars as promised. However, Dama said while accepting only 100 dinars as promised, “Do you think I will sell my father’s honor for money? I will not exchange the honor of my father for money.”

1. Respect for Parents 11

The story above is an anecdote from the Talmud. 3) It presents the story of a young man named Dama, who valued a comfortable sleep for his father more than earning money, as an example of filial piety. Of course, the actions and methods of respecting parents may change from time to time. However,

During Korea’s Chosun Dynasty (1392-1897), the king himself encouraged a culture of respect for parents by awarding those who practiced exemplary filial piety. Receiving this award was not only an honor to the family, but it helped significantly financially as well. However, soon after, the purpose of this award became greatly undermined because people began to lie to win the awards. To receive the award, people needed to obtain a recommendation from people around them, and over the decades, 400 noblemen took turns recommending one another and receiving rewards. Furthermore, during the Chosen Dynasty, it has become a culture of respect for the parents to honor them as an annual ancestral rite after the parents pass away. However, the sacrificial forms and rituals became too complicated over time. Therefore, some resented their parents while preparing the ritual. Like this, it is challenging to see it as true respect for parents to be bound only by formal customs. Thus, what is the best way to repay parental grace? As the 19th-century American social reformer, Henry Ward Beecher, said, “We never know the love of the parent for the child till we become parents,” it is difficult for children to measure the love they received from their parents. Parents show sacrificial and unconditional love to their children that are at times beyond understanding. They do not sacrifice for their children expecting something in return but are devoted and sacrificial because they truly love their children. Therefore, the best way to honor parents is for children to love their parents truly, just as parents love their children. Parents do not want filial

piety that is superficial and not sincere. Even if it is not a big gesture, one can express love to one’s parents through small actions such as frequently conversing, asking for advice, and expressing gratitude. No matter how clumsy the expression of love may be, parents desire their children to express and share their love. What truly pleases the hearts of parents is their children’s love.

Everyone who remembers his own education remembers teachers, not methods and techniques. The teacher is the heart of the educational system.

It is not an exaggeration to say that teaching is one of the oldest professions in human history. Teachers existed in all areas where civilizations developed, such as ancient India, Egypt, Greece, Rome, China, etc. In Egypt, there is a record that Princess Neferure, daughter of Pharaoh Hatshepsut, had a tutor. Teachers have played a key role in developing human history and civilization, not only as communicators of knowledge and skills but also as those who have greatly influenced the development of students’ characters and values. Let’s take a closer look at who the teachers are to students, why we should respect them, and what role they play in the 21st century. Section for Teachers # Why do we need to respect our teachers?

2. Respect for Teachers 15

1. Who are teachers, why should we respect them?

As the author William Arthur Ward said, “The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.” Although there have been many great teachers throughout history, Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle can be Regarded as examples of teachers and students who inspire.

1) Socrates, Plato, Aristotle

Road to Peace 16

Socrates is an ancient Greek philosopher who asserted that a man must know himself first to come to the truth, just as the phrase “Know thyself” is inscribed in the temple of Apollo at Delphi. Socrates tried to find a good way of life for all human beings through rational and logical dialogue. The role of the teacher suggested by Socrates was to help students recognize the limits of their knowledge and explore proactively through questions and conversations. One of the disciples raised by this method of education is Plato. Plato has left many writings about his teacher, Socrates. Since Socrates did not write, most of what we know about Socrates today was written by Plato. After the execution of Socrates in 399 BC, Plato, in shock, left Athens and toured the surrounding countries. After returning to Athens, Plato established a higher education institution called ‘Akademia,’ the prototype of today’s university. At Akademia, extensive research and education were conducted not only in philosophy but also in various fields such as politics, dialectics, mathematics, astronomy, esthetics, etc. Aristotle was one of the greatest scholars produced by Akademia and a disciple of Plato. Aristotle, known as the walking encyclopedia, made significant achievements in mathematics, physics, astronomy, biology, physiology, anatomy, botany, psychology, politics,

dialectics, and esthetics, and was also a teacher to Alexander the Great. Like his teacher Plato, Aristotle, who valued education, opened a school called Lykeion and took the lead in nurturing younger students.

2) Korczak with the children until the end Janusz Korczak (1878-1942) was a Polish-born Jewish child educator, pediatrician, and writer who participated in the Russo-Japanese War and World War I as a doctor. He was very interested in children’s education and wrote children’s books and parenting books for adults, which earned him a reputation as a writer. Since 1911, Korczak founded Dom Sierot, a Jewish orphanage in Warsaw, Poland. In particular, he insisted on guaranteeing the rights and freedoms of children. He reflected his ideas in the operation of the orphanage, and the children in the orphanage directly operated courts, newspapers, notary offices, and credit unions. However, the operation of the orphanage was not smooth. In 1940, during World War II, a ghetto in Warsaw was established, to where the orphans were relocated.4) The conditions within the ghetto were very poor, in which tens of thousands of people died from Starvation and disease, and many children were left unattended. According to Korczak’s diary, which he recorded at that time, it showed that he was not in good health, but he spent most of his time

4 A ghetto is an area within a city inhabited by racial, ethnic, or religious minorities. During World War II, the term refers to a group of Jews created by Nazi Germany.

If Aristotle had not met Plato and Plato had not met Socrates, would today’s achievements have been possible? It would not have been easy. Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle were great teachers and disciples who inspired one another. Great teachers make great disciples. Therefore, teachers can be said to be ‘spiritual parents’ who have a more significant influence than parents in spiritual and academic growth.

looking for food and medicine for the children. Despite the poor conditions of the ghetto, Korczak did not lose hope and helped the children concentrate on their studies and perform concerts, plays, etc. Korczak’s last diary entry was August 4, 1942, and on August 5 or 6 of 1942, he and his children were transferred to the Treblinka concentration camp, where they died. Korczak made his final march with his children when he moved from the ghetto to the concentration camp. The children picked up their favorite toys, books, and flags, and the boy in the lead played the violin. The Nazis, at this moment, opened fire at the children. In fact, Korczak had two chances to leave the ghetto. On one occasion, a colleague tried to falsify documents to free Korczak from the ghetto, but he refused. of Korczak

The role of a teacher does not end with simply imparting knowledge to students. Teachers take care of students with care and affection, help them grow intellectually and emotionally, correct their mistakes and guide them to the right path. Parents’ efforts alone are not enough for the children to become members of society with a holistic personality. A teacher is a ‘second parent’ who provides professional help and takes responsibility for parenting and education that parents cannot do. Therefore, just as we honor our parents, we must respect our teachers. One looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our human feelings. The curriculum is so much necessary raw material, but warmth is the vital element for the growing plant

Misha, one of the survivors from the orphanage, was asked why Korczak didn’t leave his children until the very end, and she replied, “It was who he was.”5) A true teacher treats students as their own children and shares their joys and sorrows. At times our hearts become solemn in the face of a teacher’s great love that accompanies even death.

On another occasion, the Nazis offered to release Korczak if he abandoned his children, but he again refused. In the end, Korczak shared his fate with the children. After 57 years of Korczak’s death in 1979, the United Nations declared 1979 as the International Year of the Child to mark the centennial of his birth and commemorate the noble spirit of Korczak, who stayed with his children until death.

Contrary to the expectations of children learning independently, most of the students, except for some highachieving students, experienced declines in academic performance. Learning deficits occurred because it did not properly teach the knowledge and primarily focused on activity programs. The Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) scores of countries once considered advanced in education, such as the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Finland, have declined overall compared to before the system change. Microsoft School of the Future, which opened in 2006, ranked the lowest in the academic achievement evaluation out of 688 high schools in Philadelphia in 2011. Some students who attended AltSchool could not write properly until the third grade in elementary school due to poor learning and were diagnosed with learning disabilities. Both student and teacher-led learning have pros and cons, so there is no need to determine which one is right. However, the side effects that occur when only the student-led learning methods are applied collectively without considering the differences in learning abilities have been sufficiently confirmed, demonstrating that the role of teachers is still essential even in the 21st century. Although we live in a flood of knowledge and information, students desperately need teachers to guide them.

Does Not Work , 8) published in the journal of Education Psychologist, it claimed, “Not only is unguided instruction normally less effective; there is also evidence that it may have negative results when students acquire misconceptions or incomplete or disorganized knowledge.” As a result, studentled learning positively affected high-achieving students but had the opposite effect of lowering academic performances for others, which caused educational polarization. Ultimately, the United Kingdom Ministry of Education announced in 2011 to reintroduce the traditional curriculum, which emphasizes abundant knowledge and active teacher guidance, which has continued to this day.9)

designate Teacher’s Day to express appreciation and respect for teachers at the national level. Some countries, such as Mexico, the Czech Republic, Singapore, China, Poland, and Brazil, have designated Teacher’s Day as a public holiday, and UNESCO commemorates October 5 as “World Teacher’s Day.” Although Teacher’s Day is a day set with a good intention to celebrate the hard work of teachers, there are quite a few side effects, such as giving money to teachers on this day or making improper solicitations regarding problems with their children’s entrance exams. This deteriorated appearance of respect for teachers instead breeds distrust of teachers and undermines trust in the fairness of education.

What is the best way to show appreciation and respect to a teacher? According to the results of a survey conducted with 1,200 Korean teachers in April 2015,10) the teachers felt most fulfilled “when feeling connected with their students (73.1%) .” The second was “when teaching well in class. (20.5%) .” Only 1.7% of the teachers responded with “when doing well with paperwork.” The top answer regarding what upsets the teachers the most was “when a student is being rude to a teacher (44.0%) .” The second was “administrative work (35.4%),” which is interpreted to indicate that teachers need an environment where they can focus on “teaching students” rather than administrative work. The survey results demonstrate that the primary concern of teachers is not just to work but “to communicate with and teach students.” The purpose of a teacher is to help students grow personally and academically by educating them well and nurturing them to become necessary members of society. Teachers feel the greatest joy and fulfillment when their students achieve multifaceted growth and become upright members of society.

Therefore, it can be stated that the greatest way to repay the grace of a teacher is to learn the teachings from the teacher well and grow into a necessary member of society. It is also a good way to express gratitude and respect by frequently visiting and giving letters or small gifts.

2. The Confucian view of a world of peace

3. Respect and Peace 29

Confucius was a Chinese Philosopher during the 5th to 6th century B.C. who laid the foundation for the academics and ideologies of East Asia. However, the days of Confucius were not peaceful. About 2,500 years ago, during the Spring and Autumn Period, China was divided into several countries, and it was a period of chaos where wars did not cease, and social order collapsed. It was common for subjects to kill kings to gain power, children to kill parents to possess properties, and officials to rob and exploit the people. It was a dark time when lawlessness and violence were rampant, and humanity was lost. In the Book of Rites, the state of the society at that time is described as follows.

Confucius and his disciples were walking in the mountain when they encountered a woman weeping in front of the tomb. When asked about her situation, she answered that her fatherin-law, husband, and son were all eaten by tigers. Confucius asked, “Then, wouldn’t it be better to leave the mountains and live in a village?” The woman answered, “I would rather live here. I can’t leave this place because I am more afraid of the town officials than the tigers.” Confucius said to his disciples, “Keep it in mind, tyranny is fiercer than a tiger.” In such dark times, Confucius’ ideology was to build a just and peaceful world. He believed it imperative to establish order in the collapsed state and society. However, because force cannot end the era of violence, he emphasized the need for moral politics based on respect and love for humanity. To make known his ideals, Confucius himself plunged into politics and traveled the world to meet and persuade the rulers of each country. However, the rulers, who only desired

to unify the world through military force, did not accept Confucius’ ideas. Eventually, Confucius deemed it impossible for his ideals to be recognized at this time and returned to his hometown to live a life as an educator and concentrated on nurturing students.

Road to Peace 30

Furthermore, he spoke, “Is benevolence really far away? No. The moment I reach out my hand to the person while feeling sorry for the other person, benevolence comes.” In other words, benevolence is the interest and love for people, and he perceived this to be the basis for building a peaceful world. Additionally, courtesy was seen as an expression of humanity as the word ‘courtesy’ is to fulfill our filial duties to parents, show respect to teachers, and build virtue for people. The order to realize a world of peace through benevolence and manners is first to set our hearts right, cultivate our personal life, put the family in order, put the nation in order, then put the world in order. He emphasized that we must first love ourselves and our family and that love will overflow to the country, the world, and even animals and plants. If human relations are formed based on benevolence and courtesy, hatred and violence will naturally disappear, and the world will be peaceful. Although at the time peace was not achieved, Confucius believed that peace could be realized in future generations through education. Confucius’ ideologies continued endlessly, which developed into Confucianism that greatly influenced people of East Asia for thousands of years. Unfortunately, the world of peace that Confucius dreamed of has not come yet. However,

The core of Confucius’ teaching is benevolence, which can be interpreted as love or humaneness. Confucius explained that the way to practice philanthropy is “to help others achieve what I have accomplished and to share knowledge.”

3. Respect and Peace 31

Confucius’ ideology in changing the world through the education of benevolence and etiquette remains unchanged even today. Therefore, we must teach peace right now, even at this moment.

However, today’s younger generation often views courtesy as an oldfashion and unnecessary tradition due to a lack of education on “why manners are necessary” and “what manners are shown and to whom.” Therefore, they can misunderstand manners that emphasize only formality as burdensome and pretentious. Thus, understanding and education on the spiritual aspect and the necessity of respect should take precedence.

Parents are the most precious and grateful beings who have given life to their children. Therefore, loving and respecting our parents is the right thing to do as humans. In addition, a teacher is like a spiritual parent who helps us with personal and academic growth. Let us respect the teachers Conclusion

Everyone wants to be respected. Conversely, being ignored or insulted by another individual creates a sense of hostility and revenge, leading to violence. It can be seen on the news such examples of cases of assaults and murders that started with minor profanity. Such situations also occur within groups, peoples, and countries. Therefore, respect is necessary to prevent unnecessary violence and create a peaceful society. Courtesy is a means of expressing love and respect for others, and it is a culture of peace essential to maintaining a peaceful social order.

who raised us as members of society through education and share our hearts and converse with them. Being courteous to parents, teachers, and even neighbors is the foundation for achieving peace in the family and society. However, it would be desirable to follow the culture of each country and region regarding its form and method of courtesy. Peace is not built in an instant without any effort.
