LESSON LightofRestorationPeace,WorldCulture,Heavenly 31 WORLD PEACE, THE HERITAGEGREATEST LESSON OBJECTIVES 1 Understand why world peace is the greatest heritage to pass down to future generations. 2 Understand how fantasies and familiarity with war were formed. TERMS TO KNOW • World peace • Peace education • Culture of peace

How one views war directly affects the likelihood of a war occurring. If one glorifies war, it is difficult to prevent or outlaw war. It is especially true when the legitimacy of a war of aggression to expand territory or seize an advantage is justified. Even if we take a step back and define war as a necessary evil, we end up acknowledging the necessity of war under certain circumstances. Everyone has a reluctance to use violence and kill. Therefore, there needed to be a justifiable reason for violence and murder to start a war in any era. In order to protect life and property against an enemy, the defensive war is considered a just cause to everyone. However, any war that is difficult to define definitively as a defensive war requires a compelling justification. Primarily, the arguments of philosophers have been convincing. For example, Clausewitz’s On War states that, “War is nothing but a continuation of politics with the admixture of other means.” Furthermore, “Such dominions … are acquired either by the arms of the prince himself, or of others,” from Chapter 1 of Machiavelli’s The Prince, was representatively used as causes of war. The above statements were indeed used as a justifications for advocating war which created a perception that war is a natural part of human history.

In each era, the tremendous shock and changes that occurred during the war became the subject of all art fields such as literature, music, and painting. In The Odyssey and Iliad, written by an ancient Greek poet Homer, Greek gods of conspiracy, war, and violence are portrayed as heroic. This representation is similarly found in Roman mythology. Beethoven’s Wellington’s Victory is also war music composed to commemorate General Wellington’s victory in the war against Napoleon.

Conversely, Jacque’s-Louis David’s Napoleon Crossing the Alps is a representative painting that depicts Napoleon as a hero. John Ronald Reuel Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, written during World

31. World Peace, the Greatest Heritage 3 War II, was made into a film between 2001 and 2003 and is also a representative war novel belonging to the fantasy genre. There is no end to mentioning works of art based on war. Although these works were not intended to defend war or glorify war heroes, they instilled in many people a fantasy and a positive perception of Unfortunately, war.the perception of taking war for granted, from philosophy to art to even play culture, is deeply ingrained in human history. This tendency has caused the reproduction of wars from time to time. War is by no means the only solution to conflict resolution, and humanity has many options to resolve conflicts. We can resolve disputes through peaceful means such as negotiation and dialogue rather than war, and we must strive to pass on peace to our descendants.

Through World War I and World War II in the 1900s, we witnessed and realized how easily heritage can be destroyed despite many efforts required to preserve it. Such heritage is an asset that serves as the engine of humanity’s development. Loss of heritage equals national loss and a loss to humanity, and the biggest cause of such loss is the outbreak of wars. Furthermore, wars threaten not only heritage but also human lives as well. We were able to seek development enjoying the benefits Figure 31-1 Napoleon Crossing the Alps

4 31. World Peace, the Greatest Heritage of the countless heritage we have inherited from our forefathers. However, it feels as if the most crucial one, peace, is at a stalemate. This is because wars between nations triggered by selfish pursuit of self-interest, religions conflicts, refugee issues, hostile military training, etc. have been posing a threat to not only our invaluable world heritage but also to another previous heritage called “humans.”

World peace is the most valuable cultural heritage that humanity dreams of. Peace involves beautiful virtues we find ideal, and it becomes the fertile soil for other virtues to blossom. Everyone across the globe has yearned for peace, but it still remains an unsolved challenge for us to address. The cultural lag stemming from tangible cultural heritage is seeing significant growth while intangible ones like peace are seeing a relatively slower development, which could be another factor that contributes to the current status. For us to achieve world peace, we ourselves first need to become a peace heritage embodying the mindset of peace. Furthermore, we need a sense of ownership to pass down a heritage of peace to future generations and lead the efforts to spread a culture of peace to all corners of the world. Through peace education, we need to build and spread a culture of peace.

In addition, we should urge the implementation of law at a state or international level to ensure the order of peace, and carry out campaigns and activities to help the culture of peace take root. Such endeavors will be the steps that ultimately lead us to world peace.
