What is UNESCO?

2  38. United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is an organization to promote world peace and human development through cooperation in the fields of education, science, and culture. As the saying goes, “the pen in mightier than the sword,” UNESCO was founded with the belief that education and cultural exchange are important to achieve peace. UNESCO is engaged in a variety of activities in the fields of education, natural sciences, culture and information, and communication. While the UN contributes to world peace and human development through its political power, UNESCO is an organization that performs the same role through its cultural power. Education Changes Lives Education is an essential element in obtaining basic rights that a person enjoys throughout his or her life. UNESCO protects the right to education, promotes gender

Support for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) SIDS (Small Island Developing States) are islands in the Caribbean, Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. They are one of the most beautiful places on earth, with white sandy beach atolls, coldcovered mountains, historic ports, villages, and agricultural landscapes. However, these islands are remote from the continent and vulnerable to environmental problems, such as climate change, and are generally very small in size. Their economy is highly dependent on marine and coastal resources. The region is home to 10% of the world’s coral reefs and has extensive coastal mangrove ecosystems and rich biodiversity. 70% of the population lives on the coast, and tourism is the main source of income. Sandwatch, a UNESCO affiliated program, brings together students, teachers, and community citizens to provide quality education to monitor and preserve the coastal and marine environment. This is because if ecosystems are preserved and communities are developed, they can actively respond to climate change and marine risks. High levels of HIV/AIDS prevalence, crime, violence, teen pregnancy, and unemployment threaten the future of local youth in the Caribbean. Moreover, although primary and secondary education has made significant progress compared to the past, there is still a lack of life skills education needed to make a future life outside of the classroom. UNESCO aims to help and provide students in the CARICOM

equality in education, works to eradicate illiteracy and to develop quality teachers, and provides quality education from early childhood to higher education and beyond. Literacy efforts help improve the health and nutrition of children and families, reduce poverty, and achieve life opportunities. Currently, at least 773 million adolescents and adults worldwide are still unable to read and write, and 250 million children do not have basic literacy skills.

UNESCO Designated World Heritage Site One of UNESCO’s best-known roles is to designate and protect the world’s great heritage. In order to preserve the precious heritage and memories of humanity, UNESCO is carrying out various activities such as designating World Cultural Heritage, World Natural Heritage, and World Record Heritage, protecting and restoring them, and returning looted or illegally exported cultural assets. 38-2 Map of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites
