Children and families whose lives have been devastated by war and natural disasters, or who are refugees and migrant workers, find it difficult to even see a doctor or to expect an education. As the world’s largest supplier of vaccines, UNICEF supports child health and nutrition, safe water and sanitation, quality education and skills building, HIV prevention and treatment for mothers and babies, and protection of children and youth from violence and exploitation.

Today, UNICEF is reaching disadvantaged children and youth in more than 190 countries, protecting their rights, and helping children to safely survive, grow and realize their potential from infancy to adolescence.

2 39. The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF)

The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) is an organization established on December 11, 1946, by the UN General Assembly to provide relief to children and youth victims of war. The original purpose of this organization was to help children in countries affected by World War II, but since 1950, more support has given to the welfare of not only children who have been victims of war, but also all children in crisis and children in underdeveloped countries.

Children are young and cannot do much, but they are the protagonists who will lead society when they become adults. The shape of our society changes depending on what kind of dreams children grow up with. The future of our society is in the hands of children. Therefore, adults have the responsibility and duty to help children grow well.

What is UNICEF?

Vision for Children “Children are our future.”

Support for Children in the Caribbean

Natural disasters are particularly frequent in the Caribbean region. A natural disaster, such as a hurricane, can completely change a child’s life. In 2017, hurricanes like Irma and Maria traversed the eastern Caribbean, damaging up to 95% of infrastructure in eastern Caribbean countries. The entire population of Barbuda was evacuated to Antigua. Many schools were damaged, and students had nowhere to go. About 39,000 children were affected at the time. When schools are closed or timetables are shortened due to such natural disasters, children are not properly educated and social problems such as violence and drug abuse occur outside of school. Children are also at increased risk of abuse and exploitation if they are forced to leave their homes or go to Oneshelters.infour middle school children in the area experienced Figure 39-2 Damage from Hurricane Charlie (2004)
