Wakeboarding is fun. That is something that can become lost in the pages of a magazine. Interviews with people talking seriously about their plans or their accomplishments can sometimes be a bit overbearing, but what bonds all of us together is the enjoyment we get from riding a board on water. That’s all it really is - Fun. The fact that people can make a living from having fun is a great facet of the modern world. It’s possible to live your dream because of a skill set and an outlook possessed by many who are involved in the sport. This is truly a blessing. For the rest of us, we are left watching and admiring the skills of the hardened pros and enjoying ourselves on the water all the same. In many ways, this is what makes us all the same. Whether you are meeting people from the other side of the country (or the world) or from a park down the road; if they ride a board on water, you will have something in common with them. This is something that we have experienced this issue, from Spain to Lithuania and everywhere in between, we have travelled and met so many people along the way. It is impossible to remember them all, but the one thing that stands out is the welcome we received and the friendships we built with riders from all over the world. This is what makes our sport great: fun and friends…and a bit of travel too... In this issue we have two huge road trips, each lasting nearly two weeks over different parts of the continent. DUP toured France, Germany, Spain and Holland while Monster travelled from Hungary through to Lithuania - both trips totally different in style and yet both stacked with experiences and adventure throughout. We also have Tim Woodhead, a lynchpin in the domestic scene for many years now. Tim gives us his thoughts and memories from the past and the future of wake in the UK. Another Northern gem, Megan Barker also features this issue with a candid interview from the wake destroyer. Megs is full of life and promise for the seasons to come, interviewing and hanging out with her was as much of an adventure as it was shooting her in some testing conditions. There’s plenty more too but you’ll get to that in good time. For now, keep riding, and start planning your winter escapes - the new season will be here before you know it!

Hailing from Bristol, Three Kings High is the sound of your record collection, mashed up into an electric live band experience. Inspired and influenced by Bristol’s diverse musical culture, the Kings are putting their own stamp on the city and are showcasing this fresh new sound around the country, leaving a tidal wave of energy behind them wherever they go. Off the back of the successful, and critically acclaimed “Tell Em Lies” EP, released via Reel Me Records on 7” Vinyl, CD & DD, the demand and momentum of TKH has never been greater, proven by supporting this with shows up and down the UK from Newcastle to Exeter. Three Kings High have also supporting established acts like Huey Morgan, Smoove & Turrell, The Milk & The Apples, The Pharcyde, Craig Charles, playing main stages at Brisfest, Redfest and other festivals throughout the summer months. They have been championed by BBC Bristol as ones to watch.
13 is the nineteenth studio album by British heavy metal band Black Sabbath. The album was released on 10 June 2013 in Europe and 11 June 2013 in North America, via Vertigo Records and Republic Records in the US, and via Vertigo Records worldwide. It is the first studio album released by Black Sabbath since Forbidden (1995), and their first studio recording with original singer Ozzy Osbourne and bassist Geezer Butler since the live album Reunion (1998), which contained two new studio tracks. It is also the first studio album with Osbourne since Never Say Die! (1978), and with Butler since Cross Purposes (1994). This is also the first Black Sabbath studio

album sinceNever Say Die! to not feature longtime keyboardist Geoff Nicholls. The original line-up of Black Sabbath first began work on a new studio album in 2001 with producer Rick Rubin. The album’s development was delayed because Osbourne was in the middle of finishing his eighth solo album Down to Earth, and the rest of the band members eventually went on to pursue other projects, including GZR and Heaven & Hell. When Black Sabbath announced their reunion on 11 November 2011, the band announced that they would restart work on a new album with Rubin. In addition to original members Osbourne, Butler and guitarist Tony Iommi, they were joined at the recording sessions by drummer Brad Wilk, of Rage Against the Machine andAudioslave, following original drummer Bill Ward’s decision to not participate in the reunion, due to a “contractual dispute”. The album became available for streaming on iTunes on 3 June 2013

Journeyman are a new production duo from London. Formed at the end of 2012 they moved straight into the spotlight with their killer remix of Drum & Bass anthem ‘Carry Me On’ by Brookes Brothers feat. Chrom3, earning them specialist support from the likes of B.Traits and Andy Durrant. Journeyman are now set to make their full artist debut on New State Music, with the release of double a-side single: Get Closer / Sideways. Kicking off proceedings is ‘Get Closer’, an immersive slice of future house music, featuring the sultry vocals of Claudia Georgette. This classy track fuses some of their influences, which range from soul, jazz to classical, resulting in this top-notch production. Sideways is a weightier house workout, that heads straight to the club. This banger features further trademark bleeps, cut up chanting vocals, and one of the best basslines you’ll hear this year! Both tracks come with radio and club edits, with ‘Get Closer’ also offering an instrumental version. Formed by a combination of old friendship, and a passion for music; the duo took production name from the old boxing term ‘Journeyman’. Under various guises, Journeyman have already achieved success in other electronic genres, racking up playlist support on Radio 1 and 1Xtra, and playing to masses of fans at festivals, and clubs all over the globe. This level of musical experience, and maturity is highlighted reflected in Journeyman sound: it has warmth, depth, and does damage on the dancefloor. This debut release is set to be a future classic, with the enigmatic Journeyman poised to become one of the most exciting new forces in the house music scene.

Shadow Child lands his sparkling new single Friday featuring the stunning vocals of the fast rising Takura. UK producer and dj Shadow Child has had a momentous 18 months, from releasing his 23 EP on own nascent Food Music imprint, the mighty So High via Moda Black to the landmark String Thing via Dirtybird.
SINTILLATE, original creators of the famous ‘champagne spray’ and daytime beach parties, release their first album: SINTILLATE Marbella Anthems. The 60 track, 3-disc CD presents the perfect soundtrack to this hugely popular club scene, from classic anthems to massive club hits spanning the last 10 years. Founded in 1999, the award-winning SINTILLATE have hosted parties for the likes of Little Mix and The Wanted and regularly welcome the ‘who’s who’ of the music world, including One Direction, JLS, Bruno Mars, and Drake. Other guests have included everyone from the cast of Hollyoaks, Coronation Street and Eastenders, to Katie Price, ‘Magician Impossible’ Dynamo, members of Team GB, and world boxing champions Joe Calzaghe and Amir Khan. SINTILLATE Marbella Anthems has been selected and mixed by SINTILLATE’s director of music, Rich Stone, who instinctively knows how to make the party bounce. Rich has perfectly captured the cool cross-genre atmosphere of the SINTILLATE brand with a blend of current dance smashes, classic club cuts, and forgotten gems that’ll have you leaping for Shazam.

On Friday Takura delivers a huge feel-good, crossover chorus hook that complements Shadow Child’s on point, driving, deep house beats perfectly. With Shadow Child’s and label-partner Kry Wolf, their Food Music label has grown organically as a route to release for own material and like-minded production souls. This year has so far seen critically acclaimed releases from artists Kry Wolf, Hannah Wants & Chris Lorenzo, Makes No Sense to the soon coming Motez, with a stack of exciting new artists & tracks lined up for the next 12 months. It’s a park and boat freestyle beast. The DUB integrates a 3 Stage rocker where you need it, for power off the wake and long base fins for control. We’ve added the V Hull - a unique rise in the tip and tail to increase the consistency off the wake, providing pillowy soft landings and unparalleled ollie power. Now with beefed up Side Walls – The new sidewall construction can take a beating utilizing ABS materials and a unique V.E.D (Variable edge design) to hold up to Rails without sacrificing edge control. All this, plus the Dyna2 base keeps it durable and quick in the park as well as the boat. The DUB continues to build upon the

NOW They say we are living in the biggest technological boom to date and if you look back in the last 20 years, you can see the progression in both industries. Wakeboarding has progressed from the modest Speed Boat to hundreds of cable parks around the world. Whilst photography has gone from absorbing light on chemical strips to weight and price of photographic equipment has changed drastically. iPhones, tablets and GoPros are all examples of how technology has advanced in terms of quality and accessibility. You don’t need to take a picture on a big metal camera and spend numerous hours perfecting an exposure anymore. Instead you can take a snap, then within 10 minutes the whole world can see marshmallow special at Starbucks or a snap of on a night out.

FUTURE We’ve come a long way in the past twenty years, We have seen the continuous growth of the System 2.0 which technologically speaking advanced the sport more then ever before. The whole concept behind the System 2.0 meant that we could put cable parks anywhere and evolution of the sport lead to companies such as Red Bull coming in and holding some of the hand, photography took its own brace on the in 1990 there hasn’t been much progression within the consumer market, advances in how

FREDDIE CARTER AFTER A LONG RECOVERY FREDDIE CARTER IS BACK ON THE WATER AND REACHING NEW HEIGHTS.
PROSPECT
hybridwakemag.com 37
FREDDIE CARTER What’s up man? What’s been happening? Not a lot. Fucking tired as shit! What about you? Just been working on the magazine. Waiting for the elusive Freddie Carter to get his bits together. Aw shit. Sorry man! That’s cool. How’d you loose your phone? I duno man. Got wasted. Lets talk about you and your appearance on the scene. You’ve been around for quite a long time and your just 18. You’ve had sponsors along the way but you don’t have a board sponsor right now. What’s the story with that? Well I was riding for Jobe at the beginning of this year and they just weren’t really helping me out as much as I needed them to. So I just decided to go my own way and to start buying boards. I felt a lot happier money. You’ve been through quite a few boards haven’t you? Yeah, I think I’ve been through nine so far this year. Or something like that. It’s ridiculous. What’s your outlook towards riding? Where do you want to go with it? I’d like to be able to do it to the point where I can make a living in it or at least to help me travel around to competitions and stuff. I’d like to get a few sponsors next year.

You’ve been making your mark a little bit more this year. You’ve had a lot of time in and out of the scene. Give me a brief run down of that. At the end of 2011 I basically exploded my knee. My meniscus was like round the wrong way; my ACL [anterior cruciate ligament] was like 90% torn. I had complete ACL reconstruction and meniscus reconstruction. I had 13 months off then I headed out to the Philippines, last January. I ended up in Thailand pretty happy. In those thirteen months off, what was the recovery and then coming back to it like? To be honest I was pretty slack and everyone was bugging me to keep doing the exercises. I would occasionally but I just wasn’t really into it and dealt with it in my own way. Then towards the end of the time off I started thinking about it and realised I needed to do it; otherwise I wouldn’t be able to pull through towards the end. How would you describe yourself as a rider? Um a bit dopey. I’m willing to give everything a try. You’ve always got to give everything a try. Just give it all you’ve got and might as well give it a go. What would you like to see as your impact on the industry? I’d like to be able to do more European competitions. More world competitions and become better known. Maybe pick up some sponsors that can help me out and hook me up with stuff. But yeah, I’d just like to be more known in the bigger scene. If that makes sense. What would be your biggest selling point to those people? Pitch yourself to me! Oh Jesus! I duno. I’m not very good with like doing stuff like that. [Laughs] How do you see the scene as a whole? I mean you’ve been around for ten years probably now. You’ve been involved from an early age. What’s your take on where things are at the moment?
the most kickers, nines and who can do the most rail.

FREDDIE CARTER It is heading more towards rail, which don’t get me wrong, I don’t disagree with – I do love riding rails – but I do think air tricks also need to stay a part of it. It’s mixing it up so you don’t have people that can just ride rails and nothing else. It’s not going in a bad way, it’s just not heading the way that everyone wants it to. style structures that they have? because they’re creating new obstacles that you can do lots of different go out riding jet skis; it is changing it a lot. Some of the System 2 props as well are just getting crazy good for rails and all that kind of stuff. Yeah, we saw you take down a System 2 event up at Just Wake for the alright. It was my third competition of the year and it just felt good to get And how did you do in the actual competition? the second round so I didn’t get through. I was like one place off getting through. Who were you up against? In the second round it was me, James Windsor, Brenton Priestley and I can’t remember the last person actually. Tough heat either way. Yeah I could’ve had a better one but you know if you wana get out there you’ve gotta ride against these people don’t you.

How do you see these style of events coming in for the scene? I think they’re good. They mix it up from cable riding. You’ve got lots of barrel and the transfer and two kickers, so you’ve got a little bit of everything in there. Which I think is a really good idea. Are you going to be attending any events like that over the winter? Um I’m heading out to the WWA worlds next week. So I’m looking forward to that. How long you out there for? I think like ten days or something. I’m staying out there after, having a bit of a holiday. I thought I might as well treat myself. Yeah, it’s been a hard year man. So how much time do you spend wakeboarding and what do you do when you’re not on the water? I don’t honestly ride as much as I should but I do ride like two or three times a week. Other than wakeboarding, I like to play golf, I like bowling and I don’t know, just chilling, going out, partying, getting boozy. Just having a good time really. In your younger days – although it feels weird to say that to an eighteen year old – I remember you used to smash out a few tricks on the wakeskate?
but then I decided to concentrate on my wakeboading rather than doing a bit of both. I do love going out on a wakeskate and just messing around.
Still be on my feet, walking about, wakeboarding, still having a good time. I just don’t want to have injuries that cause me to not be able to ride. Fair enough when I’m older, but I hope I’m still wakeboarding until… until my body refuses it.

FREDDIE CARTER What’s your view on the UK scene as a whole? It’s good. It’s getting a lot better. The kids out there are just killing it. They’re just doing crazy air tricks. It’s really good because you’ve got a lot of different styles of riders. You’ve got the Prince’s lot who all have the same style and they just love riding and then you’ve got everyone else. The UK style is just different to everyone else I think. In what way? Well I know British riders just love air tricks. There not like America and that lot who aren’t so into air tricks – they just do kicks and rails. If you got to a cable in the UK, I’m pretty sure that everywhere you go, you’re going to see air tricks. You hang around with Daniel Grant quite a lot don’t you? hangout a bit when he’s here; go skateboarding, take him shopping for some sweets – cause he’s a little douche. Yeah when I spent my last month in Thailand I stayed at his house. Every morning we’d go riding and he’d teach me stuff on the rails. That was the main thing I wanted to do out there, was to work on while I was there. He What was it like spending time at his place? Yeah it was good. It’s gets pretty wild. Like there’s always, always going to be people there that you know and he’s just a fun little kid to hangout with. So any other plans for winter? Yeah I’m going to head back out to Thailand in January for a few months. So I can keep riding over the winter. Other than that just head out to Abu Dhabi and then come back here for next season.

FREDDIE CARTER What are your plans for next season? How are you going to make your make next year? I duno. Just like withhold some titles maybe? The rail events, I’d like to stay on top for them. I got second this year in nationals so I would like to maybe get the win. But we’ll see how it goes, everyone’s What other events would you like to be a part of next year? Wakestock, Harbour Reach again, that’s be pretty good. Just like, I don’t know, a few invite comps. I don’t know. So tell us about your day tomorrow? I’ve got to get up really early and go and work on a roof in central London. It’s my Dad’s company and we do insulation. Its pretty like to say thanks to my Dad and all my family for supporting me and paying for me to go to everywhere. So big thanks to them and Jamie Ski as well.

MEGAN BARKER SHOWS US THE BENEFIT OF HARD WORK AND DEDICATION
NORTHERN STAR hybridwakemag.com

MEGAN BARKER Can you give us a little background on how you got into riding? I got a caravan and went to a site that had a lake and there was nothing to do but water sports; skiing, knee boarding, things like that. I tried it out for about a week and then I ended up going back over the summer. That was it really; I was hooked! Wakeboarding came around when I was about twelve. So I started riding and yeah, I don’t know really. What made you go there? We had a caravan to use as like an art studio to do paintings and stuff. So thought we’d try it out before we started using it properly for the studio. We pulled up to this site and that was it really. It was pretty random. You’ve obviously been riding for quite a bit, where were you riding before you moved down south?
What made you make the decision to move down to London? The year before last I had four days riding at LDB Wakeschool and those four days got me from riding at one level to another. I wanted to do that again so I went down for another four days at the start of last year. When I went home it was pretty crap and I thought “there’s nothing really stopping me from moving down south” so within a week I’d packed up and moved into a little caravan in LDB’s back garden. What’s happened since you moved down here? I moved to JB Ski, got a job in a café by the lake - because I was riding everyday. Then I had to leave there. I had two months out and went with some friends to France. Got a bit more knowledge of the whole wakeboarding scene – competitions and stuff like nationals. Did well that into an actual building, then started getting invited to comps and that was it really.
It’s a grey day for a slob 180 82 hybridwakemag.com

A glassy set at her home spot, LDB Wakeschool
When did you start moving into competitions? I’d say last year, I don’t know really, I just progressively got invited to more comps and enjoying them. How do you see the women’s scene at the moment? There are some strong riders out there. In the UK there’s not so much of a big scene but out in the States there’s some pretty good riding going on. I don’t know really, aw crap, I’m sorry! I don’t know what to say! I’m proper struggling! We went on our little trip to see the RAF boys the other day, tell us about that. You’ve been doing some coaching up there right? Yeah, yeah, haha, all I can think of is the car journey! The car journey to Oxford to shoot some boat riding was possibly the best part of that day. It was early, cold, a little overcast and Megan had worked until many subjects and many tales were exchanged, most of them ending in a lot of laughter. Megs told us a few real gems, some we can’t repeat. The shoelace incident mentioned below involved a phone call, a shoelace and Megs’ car ending up upside down half way up an embankment. Tell us the stories from the car journey? What about the shoelace incident? Oh no, I can’t! You can’t put that in there, my mum will go nuts! I don’t think it’s really appropriate. I don’t think it’s allowed! I dunno, it was disgusting! I’m sorry! I’m really poor at this. Where would you like to go with your wakeboarding? What’s your next goal? different places across the country. Try and help new riders and get more ladies in, build more of a scene really.
What’s your approach to doing that? What’s your plan? Keep riding through the winter. Keep progressing and trying more stuff. Hopefully at the start of next season, I’ll have been on the water all winter so I’ll still be riding strong. I hope to get out to the states and keep competing. What would you like to be known for? What do you see as valuable in a rider? I think style. Who would you like to ride like? I’d say Jonty cause he goes huge. He goes massive. He makes everything look big. I don’t really watch anybody really, I dunno. I’m not very good at knowing what goes on in the scene really, I’m pretty poor at that. You just like Jonty because he’s big, basically? Yeah cause he goes huge and he grabs everything. He’s huge and he grabs everything??? Yeah and he’s quite powerful. I dunno, yeah. Aw I don’t even know! He’s huge and he grabs everything. Aw you’re an idiot! I hate you so much! You just said that Jonty was huge and powerful and that’s why you liked him! No he goes huge! Ah I hate you so much! Don’t ever call me again! You’re a dick. He goes huge! I didn’t say he is huge! You know what’s worse as well? The things I’m saying, you can edit them to make them look even worse! We’d never do that Megs.. What do you like to do when you’re off the water, what’s Megan’s day off look like? some friends. I’d like to say get messy but that doesn’t sound good for wakeboarding and sponsors and everything else so just a few drinks. Just chill. Maybe skate - I like a good skate. I’m shit at it but I enjoy it. Actually you can’t put that in there! Maybe see some family.

MEGAN BARKER I don’t really know. Was that useful? I’ve got a unicycle now. I can ride it as well. It’s actual jokes! Lets go into Megan’s world. Tell us three random objects that you own? Three random items. I have a unicycle. What else do I have? I bet I have some pretty random stuff. A vinyl-cutting machine? I’m looking at my room now to see what I’ve got. I don’t know what I’m looking for, what’s random? I’ll probably see stuff later and say; “oh that’s random.” Give us the punch line from three stories that you can’t tell us? What do you mean by a punch line? Um… “It was all because I was on my phone and tying my shoelace” Haha! Ah that’ll do. That’s one. What’s another one? “We used to go on holiday for years together, after that we never saw him again” That was the one with the shared room. Remember the weirdo? The weird paedo? Oh! You’re on about Sam? When he told me he’d fallen in love with me when we were on a snowboarding holiday? He was one of the snowboarding guys I met when I went to Utah. I’d never met him before. I ended up on a 24-hour journey with him. We got to Utah and everything, shared a room with him. On the third day in he told me he’d fallen in love with me. I was like “what the hell?” and he was just a bit weird when we came home. There you go I’ve just told you a new one and it’s on record, which is quite embarrassing! And I’ve told you his name! Is that the one you were on about? No I meant the one when you were a kid and there was that weird old dude that had a room next to you or something? Oh! When we went to that café and I was like; “is this a biker café? I’ve been here before!” I got déjà vu and it weirded me out. That was really weird! Aw I don’t even know what to say!

I want a funny Megan story! A funny Megan story? Yeah but they’re all wrong! You can’t put any of them in! The most recent one, is when I bought the unicycle. The only reason I bought it was I got a little bit drunk and we were talking about it and I bought it there and then. I was in Paul’s room and went on eBay and bought it. I woke up the next day and realised what I’d done and was like “oh well.” It got here yesterday. Actual nuts, I don’t even know why I did it. That was a messy night. Have you ever ridden one before? Yeah I used to ride one when I was about eleven or twelve. My mate and me used to go round our village doing hops and spins. Just being little freaks really. I’m still a little freak. Do you own a micro-scooter? A micro-scooter? What the fuck’s one of them? One of those things with the two wheels. You see little kids riding them? Oh no, don’t be stupid! No way! I’m sorry. No. Bollocks to that one! I can’t think of anything worse. Micro-scooter… that’s what a skateboards for! We don’t cheat! We don’t need handles! What other Megan stories do we have? Um …maybe my motorbike? What motorbike did you have? on - cause I’ve got little legs. I went all the way to work. It was icy and snowy out. It was about 40 minutes to work. So I got there, got all the way to the car park and put on the brakes and started skidding out, took off the brakes and then the bike fully went. I couldn’t get the bike off of sixty people came out and stood round me. They called the paramedics, who didn’t want to move me in case I was hurt. I was just lying there asking them to lift it off me so I could get up. Then I had to do a whole day of work - which was really embarrassing! I was only like seventeen at the time as well.

MEGAN BARKER When was the last time you laughed so hard you cried? outside Paul’s room (I was having a late night nap in a corridor and was discovered by Megs). That was jokes! I don’t really know. I’m not very good at thinking of things. I’m shit as this, sorry! What’s the most outrageous thing you’ve ever seen? I don’t know. Give me an example? Maybe something from a festival when you see someone totally messed up? Not this year but last year at Wakestock, a group of guys got into the riders’ camp. Thinking they’re all hard and funny - or more likely trying to rob tents and boards. Then all the riders got around them and they literally shat themselves and ran off but one of them got caught. Dec What else happened at Wakestock? I was pretty messed up, I don’t really remember much. Doing handbrake awful is that! The big woman dancing was funny. She was proper giving it. It was kind of a “you had to be there moment.” I don’t even know the words for it. What would you put on your Christmas list to Santa? Noodles. Oodles of noodles and a one way ticket to America probably.

Quality Control Episode 3: Helmet Testing
Fit, flex, durability and much more. Our quest for the best continues in the Helmet Test. With another set of weird and wonderful tests we pushed four helmets to their limits and beyond. While many people will complain about having to wear a helmet, it is an essential part of riding at all UK cable parks and throughout the world. The obvious priority for a helmet is safety - it’s strength and durability are paramount. If, however, your helmet doesn’t feel comfortable or it makes you look like some sort of Super Mario power-up, you are less likely to wear it. For that reason we tested our helmets in ways that could put each element to the test; comfort, fit, durability, strength, goat fighting, etc. Of course, there’s only one real way to find out how good a helmet truly is - smash it up - and that’s exactly what we did.
hybridwakemag.com 113
114 hybridwakemag.com
The Face Plant An ever present danger when you are riding, the front edge face plant is always lurking. While helmets are not designed to take away any type of water impact, they can still react differently in this type of situation. Sometimes an oversized helmet can increase the whiplash of a crash like this but it can also help break your fall. There’s only one way to find out! While it took a few attempts for the team to brave the full force of the front edge, we got there in the end. The face plant delivered the first casualty in the testing process - an extra exuberant slam from our tester A.J. left the chin strap of the TSG hanging off on one side, rivet dangling loose in the wind.
hybridwakemag.com 115
Goat Bashing Protecting your head when landing on a hard surface is pretty much the most important aspect of the helmets. Unfortunately, we couldn’t really ask our testers to take on a rail head smash, so we got them to do the next best thing‌ pretend they are goats and have a Billy Goat Derby. Bashing heads like rams in a field - the last man standing would be the victor! This test also exposed the true nature of some of our testers as the test took an odd turn. 116 hybridwakemag.com
hybridwakemag.com 117
The Headstand This was designed to test the internal foam of the helmet - a general comfort and fit test. The idea is simple; stay in a headstand as long as you can - last man standing takes the tittle. The first collapse came when one of our testers attempted some sort of neck stand which clearly didn’t really utilise the helmet’s inner lining. The rest however, seemed fairly comfortable hanging out upside down for as long as they needed to. After some time and some pretty red faces, the remaining testers eventually submitted, leaving only the Bern standing tall by the end of the assessment.
118 hybridwakemag.com
hybridwakemag.com 119
120 hybridwakemag.com
Fruit Assault The next stage of testing was all about impact! Impact against various sizes and strengths of fruit, taken on with a heavy serving of head butts and perseverance! The testers were marked on their form, amount of fruit smashed and the sizes of the fruit they took on. Tomatoes and oranges were lower down the scale while melons and grapefruits were there to test the hardest of helmets. Only the apples survived the onslaught as all of the helmets stood up well to the test, the impacts being absorbed by the internal foams and the juice repelled by the plastic and left to dribble down the faces of the participants. A pile of pulp and seeds served as evidence that in this low speed impact test, all the helmets were up to the job - as you’d hope. hybridwakemag.com hybridwake.com 121 87
Helmetball Possibly the most brutal of the tests, Helmetball was going to push the helmets to their limits and hopefully, beyond. The idea was for each helmet to take five hits from our bat (fence post) before being subjected to the executioner’s death blow - lying the helmet on the ground and delivering a direct impact. The softer shelled helmets such as the TSG, Po-Tec and Jobe flew further being more flexible (and better fitting), while the Bern, which has a sturdier shell, took more to make it fly. The softer shelled helmets showed a few impact marks and small splits in the outer layers but the Bern was still looking strong. The executioner’s death swing would be the final test and would separate the men from the boys. The Jobe took it well with a flying rebound delivering a few small creases in the outer skin and some cracks. The Pro-Tec performed much the same, however the TSG, with its very thin outer layer, decided enough was enough and gave up with a crack through half the helmet. Lastly the Bern stepped up to the challenge. The thick outer layer stood up to the punishment well; a tiny crack and a few impact marks but nothing to worry about, still more than safe to wear, leaving it the clear victor.
122 hybridwakemag.com
hybridwakemag.com 61
Diagnosis
There were three different types of helmet on test; thin, medium and thick outer layers. The thinest was the TSG with only a very thin coating of plastic on the outer. While fit is maximised from the flexibility of the foam core, we found it less resistant to impact and stress. The Pro-Tec and Jobe helmets were of a similar construction, medium thickness outer with multiple internal foam options. This style construction is great for fit due to the flex in the shell while still offering decent protection. They both did well in the tests; impact marks and cracks could be seen by the end - that’s to be expected from what we did to them - but they were still in one piece. There had to be a winner though and the Bern was the obvious choice. It was still in good working order after the assault from the bat, it held up in the goat bashing and front edge test and showed little sign of caving, no matter what we did to it. While the Bern has a harder outer it does make the fit a little firmer than the others - if you are looking for protection, it’s the one. Fit and comfort were handed to the Jobe and Pro-Tec while the thanks for coming prize went to the TSG - a good helmet but not up to a front edge.

Indy backside shifty at Scotland’s first System 2.0 park - Foxlake, Dunbar.
How did you start Windermere? My brother and I were quite lucky as kids, my mum and dad had a caravan on a lake just on the shores of Windermere. We had a little old master craft – an old stars and stripes. If I had
so lucky because she came over and was like; “hey look at these two lovely boys aren’t they amazing?” We walked out and were like; “shit, we don’t need to take these CV’s anywhere else,

pointed like a big Surf Dog. I remember when I used to go there every weekend we could ride as much as we could there. There was a lot of other people like Kent James on the same site; Johnny Farley, my brother. Louise Moore and Rob Moyle were just down the road a bit. So a lot of people who used to wakeboard came from that lake. Good times! How did you get into working in the industry? As soon as I left school I went bang on getting me a job at Windermere. I can remember it well; me and one of my mates, Sam Butcher, went up to Windermere and got dressed up in shoes and smart clothes, we printed out like a 100 CV’s and give them to hotels, bars, anywhere we could where we wanted to work. So we went into a place called Windermere Aquatics, which is like the local wakeboard and waterski shop. At the time that was our dream job! We walked in and met Joe who’s Pat’s boyfriend. We had a chat and handed in our CVs. Luckily a friend’s mum from school was in the shop at the same time. We got 128 hybridwakemag.com
industry and I’ve done so ever since. I guess it’s just the passion for it. Once winter set in I’d think of the good times during the summer that was what I always thought the essence of wakeboarding is - going out on the boats with all your mates and some beers, not taking anything seriously just total amount of fun. Where did it go from there to the school? The UK wakeboard tour was a really cool boat tour. We used to go in a convoy to all the stops at the quays. That was cool because you got to meet so many other people. You’d make friends with all the other riders at the time. People like Stu Mackie and Jay Crowhurst. It was just a really good little scene then. I wasn’t like you’re travelling there just to compete, you were travelling there for a sick weekend! which I helped organize with a few others,

Early winching days
Another Wakestock monster
Building the pool gap at the first Think Tank event
called Wake Windermere in 1997. We managed to blag permission from the boss at Windermere Aquatics and use the big shed he had, so we put on a competition and party there. It was something that I always wanted to do, I love riding obviously but I wanted to push the sport, help it grow. Everyone thought it would be cool to have a competition on lake Windermere. So I was like well it’s not going to happen unless someone does it. That’s probably the attitude I’ve always had so if I want to do something like that we’d just do it. I always keep old magazines, like I’ve got Hybrid, Alliance and even The Edge - which is an old mag from years ago. I’ve got all the copies I’ve ever had and I was looking through some of them the other day. It’s so funny; there were old sketches in there of obstacles or sketches of the little events that were years ago. I’ve always enjoyed doing stuff like that. Look at me now, I get paid to do it, its pretty cool! I’ve been involved in it all for like 4 to 5 years. My brother and Rich were running a shop called the Ski Shack on lake Windermere so that was a cool wakeboard school. We had Dave Knight running Pine Lake; basically the north had an absolutely awesome scene. I can’t describe how many people used to wakeboard on lake Windermere. There must have been well over 500 ski boats on the lake but in 2001 the Government put a 10mph speed limit on the lake. That basically shut the whole place down. The Ski Shack closed down - a lot of the shops I used to work at closed down. All the boats just vanished. But now, 10 years on, I worked out; all the money that was coming in from the lake and the people who registered their boats was all lost and now the wardens can’t afford to police it. They don’t have any legal rights to take your name. So if you go out and get caught speeding the warden might come over and, from what I gather, if he asks what your name you can say; “I don’t know mate, I’m not telling you.” And they’d have no legal power to get it out of you. So he’d have to call the police. The police would come and ask for proof that you were speeding. They can’t afford the speeding guns, so they can’t prove anything. It’s kind of like this vicious circle; the wardens knowing they can’t do anything really and cant afford to take you to court. So you’re not allowed to wakeboard but there are a lot of people doing it - as long as you don’t piss off the wardens by doing donuts round them and stuff like that – they’ll turn a bit of a blind eye. I reckon those 4/5 years I spent there were the best times. Life can’t get much better than those days really – those years are just blurred into one amazing time. Sounds like a lot of fun! It was good especially when we had the shop. I went on an Ultrasport trip to Xtremegene. That’s where I met you! From then we’d trip to Xtremegene 2 or 3 times a year. Those trips were a combination of good wakeboarding and absolute carnage. Messy but super fun! Always good memories from those trips, fancy dress events… Just carnage really!

So how did you get into building rails? We were running the shops and we went to the
that’s how it happened. While we were there we met Christian and Marcus who used to run it. Marcus build rails. Marcus and Trigger built one and we helped put another in. It was never a matter of getting paid – we always wanted to help because it was a sick event. We had an absolute passion for it because it was helping push the sport. We learnt a lot from Trigger and Marcus; how they would build the rails and stuff. They were the people who were building the most the progressive obstacles in the UK. I got offered a job working at Sensation Group. I was there for 8 months over Summer. Then I’d take out a snowboard season and came back. After that I worked full time for 4 years. That was cool because we were running Wakestock and Alliance. In the end I brought the System 2.0 into the UK. At the same time we used to run Think Tank, it was just sick. It must’ve been rad living in Abersoch at that time? Living in Abersoch for two years was just sick. When you go from Windermere, riding all the time and then that being shutdown - moving to Abersoch is what kept me sane. The best thing I used to do there is get a jet ski and hog up all the shores wakeskating. I think even to this point that that’s the most fun you can have on water; just two people, a wakeskate a jet ski and beautiful scenery. You can ride for 30mins each and when you’re not riding, you’re driving a jet ski. Both of them are just great fun, aren’t they? Where did you live when you were at Abersoch? In Abersoch it’s quite hard if you want to live there for just the summer or short term. I just got lucky one day, I was in the pub with my boss’s to live. Luckily one of them said that they’ve got a static caravan in their garden. So I went and checked it out. They were up for renting it to me and it turned out this garden belonged to the pimpest house in Abersoch. Like you go up on the hill on top of Abersoch, on top of where Wakestock’s big air is. You look to where and stuff. It was just up there, this static caravan tucked away in the garden. It was the sickest place to live! Though in the summer it’s too busy and in winter it’s so dead but spring and autumn sort of heading up the behind the scenes stuff. Like Sim was the editor of Alliance, I used to do a lot of stuff like adverts, trips that sort of thing. It was kinda easy because I was based in Abersoch. Then I started doing the System 2.0 and other events around the country.
How did you get into bringing System 2.0 to the UK? We used to do a lot of work with Pat Panock. If I could ever be like anyone in wakeboarding then it’d be that man because the competitions he used to run, the event rails he used to build, were just sick. They did the carnival, which was blowing just looking at all the shit they built. Thinking “shit I want to do something like that in England.” They set up the Projects, I remember you just go in there it’s like a grave yard of wall. Basically anything they built there is still there in some form – it’s like a wakeboarding museum. I totally respected what him and his crew were doing. He’s a sick rider too - people forget that he’s pretty damn good on a wakeboard. One day he was like, “guys we are doing this, we made this thing, it’s called a System 2.0, it’s a two tower cable.” And in my head I was thinking; “nah I don’t get it, I don’t see it.” Pat was telling me how this thing could change wakeboarding, he was looking to get help to bring them into the UK. So we were like; “yeah, of course we’ll help” but until I actually saw one I wasn’t too sure about them. Then when I went to the projects and rode one, I was like; “holy fuck! This could change everything!” Suddenly you didn’t need a million pounds to set up a cable park. You could do it with just under 100 grand. All you needed was a System 2.0, loads of obstacles, a clubhouse, whatever. There are now like 300 of them around the world, 35 of them in the UK. Now all the riding I do is on System 2.0, partly because it’s my job and also because I love it. I picked up my obstacle riding, I just love hitting obstacles, don’t give a hoot about air tricks. I would’ve rode boat if I had one but I just love the System 2.0 for hitting all those obstacles! What was it like to introducing it to newcomers, to those who didn’t understand it? Stu Mackie, who is like a legend of the UK
He was one of the guys that always pushed the sport and he was like; “you got to get me one of those!” of the guys that always pushed the sport and he was like; “you got to get me one of those!” He came to the bricks to test it out and you know system in the UK, which was at the Quays. He saw the vision and he knew everyone really well at the Quays. They used it for beginners, air you knew it was the big one! It’s easier to teach beginners and teach air tricks. So that’s what our main business would be and it turned out the majority of the parks and places we put them in were new parks. It’s just totally grown the sport massively. a risk, as it was a little bit revolutionary. For the there was always massive interest in it. I think we’ve had 300 to 400 enquires to set up a System 2.0 in the UK. We’ll do 10 or 12 more systems
hybridwakemag.com 137
Waking waves in Liverpool, first Industry.1 then Harbour Reach Did you always see yourself running Wakeparks? When I was younger, my family on both my mum and my dad’s side had their own businesses. When I was a kid in school all I wanted to do was work for wakeboarding. I had this background of my family working for themselves so I think it was just natural that I’d want to be my own boss. Me and my friend used to do A’level design, we built a sky launcher pool for our master craft. We were like “shit, we can sell these!” so we started making loads around the UK. I think I’ve always wanted to do little projects, to make my own money, be my own boss. I’ve always liked it because if you work you’re ass off, you’re the one who gains. How did Industry Wakeparks come about? We set up Industry Wakeparks probably like 4 years ago. It became our absolute passion because we worked our asses off. There are times when we worked way too much! We did all the wakeboarding at Wakestock through the years. We teamed up with Red Bull, which to me was the biggest thing, I was like; “shit, this is big!” Christian Stevenson who MC’s Wakestock knew Red Bull wanted to do some wakeboarding events so we got together with them to create Harbour Reach in Liverpool. It was mind blowing! It was just awesome that we had stepped up and created a big event. It was just so sick; such a high standard of riding, such a great set up. I’m just proper proud of what we achieved. I loved riding there, I loved learning new tricks there and I loved putting on events like that. There are two reasons why I love wakeboarding; the riding and doing things like that.
138 hybridwakemag.com
Do you think cable parks have pushed the sport forward? It’s good to see all these wakeparks opening, all over America and Asia. They are booming! It’s sick to see, proper companies making proper obstacles. Like Unit, if you look at their range; they have 60-70 obstacles you can buy. Look at how events have changed, they captivate a crowd, it’s not like boat riding, where the boat’s too far away to see anything. You can’t imagine everyone having a boat but you can imagine someone going to their local cable park for a shred. I just think that’s where the sports going. It’s following the roots of snowboarding. I watched a video with Raph Derome; he says
from all of them. Snowboarding had a massive way we want to ride, on what I class as good
“ The fact that these wakeparks look like floating snow and skate parks - that’s what I think will push the sport more.” riding tricks. The fact that these wakeparks what I think will push the sport more. Not the Olympics. Fuck the Olympics!
The view from Tim’s office window isn’t bad
hybridwakemag.com 139
Some of the build crew from Boardmasters a few years ago Where do you see it going from here, what’s the next step in the UK and our scene? With 2-3 new parks opening each year it might mean that in 5 years everyone is within 40mins of somewhere awesome to go wakeboarding. I think that’s defo a possibility. I always say the sport can only grow if it becomes more accessible. That can only be a good thing for everyone, especially if people run their parks well and attract beginners. If you open a new wakepark your whole business model has to be getting beginners and turning them into people that wakeboard regularly. At Industry our staff training teaches that the most important person is the beginner. You have a chance to get somebody into the sport that could buy a membership and a board every year. If that happens then you’ll see more events with decent prize money - so if you want to become a pro rider you can. That’ll create more jobs as well – more coaching jobs, obstacle building, etc. At the end of the day a cable is cable but it’s what you have underneath it; more pool gaps more legit safe rail - that’s as progressive as new shapes and stuff. A wakepark can’t open anymore and have some half-assed dodgy rail with bits of ply hanging off the side. I think its good people make their own rails and stuff but they’ve got to be properly built. So that’s how I see it going, new obstacles, new places to ride, long gone are the days when you could go on a day trip and do all the parks in the country. I reckon you couldn’t even do it in a week now!

You have your own wakepark now, how did that happen? I’d spent the last 4 years at Industry, setting up parks for other people. Building obstacles and loving every minute of it but we wanted to have our own park. We had been trying for the last
“We did a few events in Liverpool and we knew that the Northwest was lacking in wakeparks. So we went to Liverpool where we had a few inroads with the council.” We did a few events in Liverpool and we knew that the Northwest was lacking in wakeparks. So we went to Liverpool where we had a few inroads with the council. We made it happen and we opened Liverpool wakepark. Finally we had our own wakepark! I guess we took everything we learnt over the last 16 years and put it into one place. We have 2 systems and sick obstacles - so we can always change it up. Its’ going well and now if you live in the Northwest you have Salford Quays, Blackpool and Liverpool. There are three sick setups 40 minutes away from me and one of them is mine! We get to ride all the time again. So that’s the dream I suppose – having your own park. It’s not just me whose responsible, it’s everyone who helps out; my brother, Rob, Dave Knight, System 2 Hackers, Graham Bully, Alan Pack – there is such a big crew of people and they enjoy working there. So thanks very much to all those people, we defo couldn’t do it without them!

Trick Tips Stalefish Back Roll Sam Carne
As with a normal back roll, take a super progressive edge as you approach the wake. Keeping the handle in towards your front hip and weight slightly more on your back foot and front hand.
172 hybridwake.com
Release off the wake, ensuring you edge all the way through the top to give you good pop. As you go up into the air, drop your back hand and bring your knees up to your chest a little to help make the grab more reachable. This will become more natural as time goes on.
Making sure you don’t let the handle travel too far away from your body, you should be able to get a solid grab as you come around to the half way mark of the rotation. Try to keep an eye on your landing at this point.
Having kept good tension on the handle all the way around the rotation, you should be able to help control the landing by letting the handle out or pulling it in a little to speed up or slow yourself down. You will rotate much faster with the grab so be aware of over rotating when you first start trying this trick.
As always, try and bend your knees as much as you can when you land to help keep it smooth and give yourself the best chance of riding away. Slipping out the back is common so keep an eye on that front foot!
As you pass the half way mark of the rotation you will be able to tweak out the grab like normal. It’s a good idea to practice the poke without the roll first to help make it easier with the rotation. Tail pokes are easier on ths invert although adding any tweak throughout is a bonus!

Trick Tips Stalefish Backside Off Axis 180 Dan Nott
Twist the handle over and push the handle into the small of your back. Thinking about getting the back of your hand to touch your tail bone will help you to keep it in tight. Letting the handle out here is not what you want
As you land make sure you bend your knees, rolling your knees over your toes will help you stay on edge as you take the impact. Keep your chest facing forward to allow you to keep weight on your edge and ride away from your new trick.
174 hybridwake.com
Twist the handle over and push the handle into the small of your back. Thinking about getting the back of your hand to touch your tail bone will help you to keep it in tight. Letting the handle out here is not what you want
As you start to spot your landing release the grab and prepare to let your body come back down towards the handle and on axis. Handle control is key at this point, make sure you have it under control and not way out.
Keep your eye on the second wake throughout the grab, this will keep you from rotating early and crashing out. Maintain the tension on the handle at this point, lettig it travel out too far will also lead to you taking an early dunking.
Keep slightly crouched through your approach so you can push off the top of the wake. As you leave the wake, push the handle down to initiate the off axis spin. As you do so, grab the board and push your hips out behind you. Make sure you keep the handle under control as it will be important later to complete the spin.
Use a progressive edge all the way up to the top of the wake to enable a predictable release and controllable pop. As with all off axis spins, the edge is crucial. Make sure you get this right as it is the basis of the trick and spinning off axis.

Trick Tips KGB Jorge Gill
Approach the wake as you would for a roll to blind, making sure you have control on your roll to blinds will make this trick a lot easier. Just remember you will be spinning that extra 180 so you will need to spin a little faster than you are used to. Early roll to blinds will help here.
176 hybridwake.com
Initiate the roll off the top of the wake like normal, making sure you are using all the wake to ensure you get maximum lift is crucial to avoiding those big diggers at the end of the trick. A solid pull with both hands helps.
As you reach the half way stage, make the handle pass as normal but really try to concentrate on keeping the handle tight, even when it is behind your back, just like a regular handle pass backside 360 without the invert.
With the handle passed it is important to keep looking around for the remainder of the spin, your body will follow your head and hips so looking and using the handle to make your hips spin will in turn help you to complete both of the rotations. Really try and pull the handle down and across the front of your body here, it will help to ensure that you don’t under rotate!
As always, make sure you let your lower body take the impact of landing and try to get your front hand back on the handle as quick as you can to make the landing more stable and enable you to edge away from the trick after landing your first KGB!
You should have been able to spot your landing quite early, so you should be aware of how you are coming out of the trick - if you are under rotating the trick, think about landing on your toes - you don’t want to but it will help you land more over the board and complete the roation.
