smile costs nothing, but buys everything, goes a maxim. It can work wonders everytime. One smile that has never ceased to puzzle art enthusiasts for centuries is the intriguing one in Mona Lisa . Experts may impute multiple meanings to such artistically immortalized smiles, but the fact remains that every single smile of even the most ordinary human being counts. Among those who are young at heart, there is hardly anyone who will not fall flat for a beauty’s captivating smile. If she has a dimple, nothing like it! A graceful lady with a neat smile carries a natural letter of recommendation on her. She can get things done in no time just by smiling at her benefactors. Even irritable people handling counters that have serpentine queues sometimes cool down and break into an involuntary smile if they come across a woman with a pleasant smile that is not contrived.

Turning on the

magic of smile

AUGUST 2008

Some women take extra care to work real magic with their smile. They go for the right foundation, lip stick, mascara or whatever to make an unforgettable overall impact. A good smile is much more than a statement of sensuality or sexuality. It is an expression of goodwill, a signal of amity, invitation to friendship and a reflection of positive qualities in a person. It pays to smile at everybody with whom you have interaction quite often. It is the easiest way to cultivate friendship. It is the best bet to break the ice when you are in the midst of total strangers.

Anushka in ‘Souryam’ movie, pics by Anand Raj

You never know how much good your smile can do. It can make the day for a person weighed down by work. It can soothe the nerves of a man laden with stress. It can bring sunshine in the lives of those immobilized by sorrow. It can raise the spirits of those who are downhearted. It can put warmth back in a relationship that has turned sour due to inattention. Take the case of Anushka, Hyderabad Josh’s choice for showcasing the beauty and grace of a well-endowed woman. Everytime a smile creases her face, she mesmerizes those who have the fortune of being near her. They savor much more than the beauty of her face. Something seems to get inside them right from her heart. The closer you are to her, the greater is the impact of her smile. If you are young, you can’t help spending sleepless nights. Anushka is known for her postive attitude. She is a powerhouse of energy. Ever smiling and enthusiastic, she is one actress with whom leading actors love to work, regardless of their tight schedule. _

Glimpses Flavour of the Season

U

Howzzat!

T

here are people who resist change and there are people who have the 'can't beat them-join them' attitude. With thunder thighs giving way to skinny chic, actresses are seen struggling with their weight management issues. In other words, they are fat and want to get thin fast. Starvation diets, anorexic issues and liposuction might help them, but there's nothing like sweating it out at the gym to get to size zero and stay there. Ask the guysAllu Arjun bared his abs in Desamuduru and is seen mostly at Crunch (B'Hills) to keep it that way. A string of more ab-shows followed, the latest being Nitin. But NTR would just like to keep lean and mean. No sixers for this man. He is happy the way he looks.

tter 'Genelia' in front of anyone who's worked with her, and the praises never seem to end. This spunky girl has caught everybody’s attention right from her debut in Shankar's Boys when she was in college. Her fan base has increased from college audience to include families now, not to forget men of all ages! She is the quintessential girl-next-door but versatile, extremely expressive, works really hard (read as speaks her dialogue in Telugu instead of the usual 'ABCD…') and is a professional to the core. After so many hits in such a short period of time, what remains to be seen is whether she will occupy the Queen Bee position of Telugu cinema which has been vacant for so many years now. After winning accolades in Jaane Tu…don't be surprised if she makes it big in Bollywood too. While on Hindi cinema, what happened to Shreya? Genelia is trying to gain a strong foothold in Bollywood. Another southie favorite to watch out for in Hindi is Asin, making her presence felt in Aamir's Ghazini.

From Baby to Babe

T

hose who remember her as the endearing little sister in Iqbal or the naughty little girl in Makdee will be surprised. Swetha Prasad might not be an obvious choice for playing the lead, but is nonetheless a fab pick. She stars in Dil Raju's latest venture, Kotha Bangaru Lokam, along with Happy Days star Varun Sandesh. Swetha might have been a child actor, but her acting prowess won her many an award. With a youthful theme and several teenagers debuting in it, the movie is expected to be fresh in all aspects. Looking like a child-woman as always, now with teeny-bopper clothes and a newfound grace, Swetha is sure to win southie hearts by the dozen now.

Heirs to Legacies

W

hat happened to Rana and his debut? This kid started a company called Esprit, ended it, and then produced an awardwinning children's film with his best friend Prakash Rao. He then categorically stated that he wasn't interested in making it big as an actor. Apparently his grandfather wanted him to become an actor, since he never became a full-fledged one himself and Rana has been named after him (Rana=RAma NAidu). Then suddenly Rana was seen looking fit and groomed, ready to rock T'wood. His movie was supposed to be produced by Prakash Rao, but the project seems to be still in the offing. Apparently, Prakash demands perfection. That's bound to take some time, but at least it’s quality over quantity for Gen Y.

Life Style

Dr. Y.S.Rajashekar Reddy

Dasari’s credo:

Eat less, work more

F

or most people, overindulgence is quite natural if salivating items are laid out on the dining table as part of a full-course dinner. ‘Darsaka Ratna’ Dasari Narayana Rao, who has started watching his weight, satiates his craving for good food by just tasting the choicest items of a large menu laid out before him every day. Be it for breakfast or lunch, several items dear to him are spread out on the table. In fact, seeing the large menu on the table and relating that to his oversized personality, people would think that he gorges on such rich food every day. That is not the case. The ace director these days directs very little into his stomach. He limits his overall intake by nibbling on a variety of items. ‘Early to bed and early to rise’ may be the norm for most successful people, but going to bed past midnight and getting up before the crack of dawn is a habit that ‘Dasari has carefully cultivated in his filmi career spanning three and a half decades. Over coffee, he then goes through newspapers and gets ready for pooja by 8-00 am. Clad always in spotless white attire, Dasari is a non-smoker and a teetotaler - something that makes him an odd man out in the industry. He is known for his strong willpower. Dasari has directed 148 films - a world record that has merited an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records. He has made a mark not only as a director, but also as an actor, producer, distributor, exhibitor, editor, publisher and now as a politician as well. A down-to-earth person, he knows the art of touching the hearts of people, regardless of their station in life. Although he has been honored with countless awards, rewards and titles, he personally likes to retain only one as the prefix to his name - "Darsaka Ratna."

yderabad Josh recently caught up with the Gang of Six at Karvi Global Services, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad to know what gives them josh in the City. It was a fun-filled interactive session with Arun who's into Business Development, Team Leader Nusrat, Analyst Manpreet who's originally from Delhi, Trainee Analysts Vinay, Jinny and Tavish, the latter two from MP. It was a nice mix of Hyderabadis and those from other cities. Quiz them about their favorite hangouts, and everyone has one answer. Arun, with his laptop and slow drawl votes for Extreme Sports Bar on Road No 1, which is near their office. The girls like Necklace Road and Prasad's. They all like the malls here, but Delhi girl Manpreet says the malls back home are much better. What's one place everyone in Hyderabad should visit at least once? Nusrat quips 'Is there any such place?' But they all decide Eat Street, because no other city has something romantic like that. And Charminar. Thank God for remembering our heritage point! What gives them josh at the workplace?

Jinny is the first to answer 'People!' And the most joshila character in their office? Most of them say 'Deepak' (their boss), but then they decide no one really knows Deepak. So they vote for Chalapathi, their HR head, because 'he's responsible for us being here!' They agree that the food in Hyderabad is really good, especially the variety. Their favorite places: Angeethi,

Vinay

Manpreet

Deli 9, Barbeque Nation, Ohri's and hold your breath 'Gandha Wada' or the wada sold on the roadside bandis. What's the best thing about Karvi? They all agree it's getting to know global markets and trends, as it is the most exciting feature of their job profiles.

Arun

De-stressing Mantra: For Jinny, it's shopping. For the rest, catching up with one another once the work is done. They talk to unwind. Ask them where they catch up, and they quip 'Anybody's desk…whoever is idle. They giggle for the umpteenth time and we still have two more questions for them. Describe Hyderabad in a few words: Jinny says 'Warm people', Nusrat puts it as 'Beehive' and Vinay thinks it's 'Laid back'. Tavish surprisingly says 'Horrible'. Ask him why, and Jinny answers on his behalf: 'Because his girlfriend is not here!' Describe their office: Here we get a positive response throughout, from comfortable, spacious and cool to great work culture. Only Arun in his characteristic drawl says 'Office is office'. And what do they think of the name of our magazine? Karvi employees like the name 'Hyderabad Josh' and think it spells attitude, youthfulness, fun…here again, someone makes a witty comment and its laughter once again. Karvi surely seems to have a great work atmosphere as demonstrated by this smart young team.

Treasured Memories

Gifts Galore for the bride 'n' groom

12

AUGUST 2008

I

t takes gumption to come up with the right gift for the bride or the groom on their wedding day. Finding gifts that are in sync with their lifestyle is

important, because ideally what you gift should become a part of their cherished memories. The gifts have to serve them in their new life of togetherness. Wedding gifts, regardless of their monetary value, will be better appreciated if they are useful to the bride as well as the groom. It is better to personalize the gifts you intend to give. Personalizing gifts may involve engraving, stitching, sculpting or whatever. It could take the form of inscribing poems, wedding vows, names and dates, initials or some such thing. After personalizing the gifts, you can

embellish the gift package with a carefully chosen card that mirrors your true feelings on what is clearly the happiest occasion for the couple. Gifts that most couples would most likely welcome include a weekend getaway, jewelry, pampering beauty bath sets, a fun wedding survival kit, relaxing candles, essential oils, incense or roses beautifully preserved in either gold or silver. If you are buying gifts for the bride, you have to choose a gift that is especially for her or one

that will remind her of her new status in life. If you are buying a gift for the groom, the ultimate choice will depend upon your relationship with the groom and the degree of personalization you want. The gifts in this category include towels, bathrobes and slippers, crystal wine glasses,

mugs, decanters and carafes, crystal and glass serving trays, bowls and platters, coasters and serving trays, photo albums and picture frames, an engraved copy of wedding vows or the actual wedding invitation captured forever in crystal or marble, T-shirts, caps and sweatshirts. If you know the bride and the groom very well, the preferred gifts could be a set of car mats or seat covers, a framed copy of the meaning of his and her names, champagne, roses or package tour for a day or two at a spa. If the couple do not have any honeymoon plans or if they can't afford it, a paid honeymoon package, a weekend getaway or bed and breakfast for two, a romantic weekend filled with dinner and relaxation will be the best bet. It can be the right answer to the unavoidable stress that precedes some wedding plans. With the multitudinous wedding gifts clamoring for attention out there, it can sometimes be overwhelming to choose the perfect gift for the bride or the groom. Like all goods things in the Net-driven world today, one may find answers at the click of a mouse. Of course, finding the right website or the right company to ultimately buy the product may involve a bit of an exercise. At the end of the day, it is worth it.

asking in another's glory comes easily for scions in families wedded to the film world. But, for Ram, the latest sensation in Tollywood after the runaway success of Ready, striking it on his own has been an arduous task. He had a tough time letting people know that, despite being Sravanthi Ravikishore's nephew, his role was not cut out for him in films. He had to work his way to secure top honours. His first flick Devadasu was deemed an unexpected hit. The next one, Jagadam, did not make waves at the box office. With Ready things started falling in their places. Today, Ram's 'ready' to take on the world. He has made it amply clear that he has arrived. Hyderabad Josh spoke to the shooting star in the midst of his busy schedule. That done, making him sit still for some exclusive pictures was next to impossible. Excerpts from the interview:

By Anjali

Q

Have things been easy for you because of your filmi background?

My uncle is a producer. That is, I do have something to bank on. But, it won't get me a fan following. That's something I have to work for. I need to work on it myself.

Q 14

How did you get the role in Devadasu? AUGUST 2008

I never looked my age. When I was 13 people used to ask me which college I was in. I've always wanted to be an actor. I was 13 when I acted in a short film directed by Amjad, which made it to the European Film Festival. I played a drug addict in it and won the Best Actor award. It gave me a lot of confidence. The film was made in Tamil

and English. Later, I got a lot of offers. I got one from Oscar Ravi and we had plans for my debut. Even M.S. Raju was interested in launching me. All this had nothing to do with my uncle. I was going to star in a Tamil movie, which ultimately never took off. The offer from Y.V.S. Chowdary was different. He saw my photographs and showed interest in meeting me. He didn't know who I was.

“

I always have something to bank on. I won't say it's my backup, but it's like a backbone. It won't get me a fan following

“

Q

Did you imagine it would be such a huge hit?

It was my first film. I just wanted to prove myself. I wanted to give it my best. I did my duty.I didn't expect it to become such a huge success. After Devadasu became a hit, what plans did you make to build on your success?

Q

Devadasu initially got an average response, which for a newcomer like me is as good as failure. I was wondering what to do next. Three weeks after the release of the film, I got a call from Sukumar. He said he would cast me in his new venture.

How old are you? Do you miss doing what guys and girls of your age normally do?

Q

I'm 20 and I never miss out on any fun! I never went to college, so I don't know what it's like. If I were to go to college and then drop out, maybe I would have missed it. But it doesn't matter to me. What do you do in your spare time? Tell me about your hangouts, your friends circle and other interests.

Q

I have very few friends in Hyderabad. All my friends are in Chennai. They are my childhood

Were you disappointed with the outcome of Jagadam? Why do you think the movie did not fare well commercially?

Q

You seem to be quite choosy about your roles. Just three movies in four years. How come you did not go on a signing spree?

Q

Being a producer's nephew doesn't help me get a fan following. I have to work on that. So I need to be picky. Everyone has a fair share of advantages and disadvantages. Even after my first movie became a blockbuster, it took time for me to establish myself. This is what drives me to give my best each time.

I think comedy as a genre needs a strong base. It's like you need a cake for the icing! And Ready has a nice mix of everything. There are some fights too,

eds e n e r n e g a s a Comedy nk. i h t I e s a b g n o a str ke a c a d e e n u o y It's like dy has a e R d n A . g n i c for i hing. t y r e v e f o x i m a nice

Following Devadasu, I was determined to prove my mettle as an actor. Jagadam seemed to provide the perfect opportunity. I thought it would either take me to great heights or pull me down. It was a sheer gamble. I was keen on reaching out to the multiplex crowd, because the masses knew me after my debut.

The day I signed it I was happy. The price I quoted and got, the prevailing craze for my second movie and also Sukumar's (after the super hit Arya) and everything else seemed perfect. Anyway, I have no regrets. I learnt a lot as an actor‌ Some people say the film has a lot of violence. I don't think so. People may find the violence realistic. Many could relate to the characters and it did not go over their heads.

me. He wanted to work with me. Actually, the admiration was mutual, though I haven't seen any of his other works except Venky, which is a comedy. We were considering something on the lines of Nuvvu Naku Nacchav, which will appeal to family audiences and girls. The mass image is OK, but I wanted to reach out to larger audiences.

buddies.I take time to befriend someone.I go to Chennai every month, even when I'm busy I take the time. And I don't go out unless I'm really bored and I have to get out of the house. Otherwise, I'm quite happy at home. I'm a family person and like being at home.

Q

Girls in Ram's life‌single or ready to mingle? Or too young?

Single and don't know whether I'm ready to mingle or not. It's never too young.

Q

Tell me about Ready.

After Jagadam, my uncle thought I should do a family-oriented entertaining movie. Devadasu and Jagadam were totally on my shoulders. There were scenes in which the only thing that mattered was my performance. I was there in most of the frames. It was too much burden on me. Srinu Vytla was very impressed with

and the masses like the movie. This is my first "Good Boy" role actually.

Q

Which movie do you think is better, Ready or Srinu Vytla's earlier hit D?

D is a nice film. It has good comedy. Ready is a blend of everything. The beauty of Ready is that it keeps touching your heart. Vishnu was fabulous in D. I am satisfied with my performance in Ready. Everyone said that I looked quite natural. Who are your favorite stars in Telugu and Hindi films and how about international ones?

Q

I hardly watch Indian movies. Jim Carrey is my favorite internationally. That's the most diplomatic answer I can think of (laughs). What were your experiences while working with Ileana and Genelia? And, how about Isha, the other leading lady?

Q

AUGUST 2008

17

Illeaba is like a friend. We both started off together. Genelia is a senior and a thorough professional. She's a role model for so many wannabe actresses. She doesn't lip sync. She works very hard. She is very accommodative and a pleasure to work with. She never burdens the producer. In fact, in Ready she designed some outfits and helped in shooting on schedule without delay. No tantrums, good acting and very co operative-that's Genelia. She's one person I'd like to work with again.

Q

And Illeaba, wouldn't you like to work with her again?

Hmm…maybe not. Oh no, if she reads this…I'm in trouble! As for Isha, we looked at about 3,500 portfolios and auditioned about 300 girls. We had photo shoots with some 30 of them. And then we selected Isha.I guess she wasn't ready for movies. That's all I can say.

Q

What's Ram's style - on-sscreen and off-sscreen?

I don't think I have a style right now. I'm a kid yaar! OK, let me think: simple and casual.

Q

What do you think of Ram Charan, Allu Arjun, Navadeep? Any friends in the industry?

I hang out with all of them. Navdeep even did a cameo for Ready. He was really sweet about it. He just needs that one big hit and he'll get there. As for Charan, I think he lived up to the huge expectations of him. So did Bunny. We are pretty cool together. I think the era of big ego clashes is gone.

Q

How do you rate the response to Ready? Do you think it's your best performance?

Well, until Ready was released, people had not seen much of my face because of all the hair. People didn't realize how fair I was, because of my rugged and tanned look. I liked playing

Jawani

the boy next door. The response to the film has been awesome! My uncle tells me that ladies and girls and families are queuing up, barging into the manager's cabin and asking for tickets! That gives me a great high.

Q

After watching Ready, a lot of people say, "A star is born." How does that feel?

I am happy, excited and confident! But, my feet are firmly on the ground.

Q

Some comment on your height. What's your take on that?

I'm 5 feet 8 and half inches! That's not short. The song '5 feet 8 inches' doesn't apply to me anymore (Jagadam). Actually, it is an advantage. It's an ideal height for an actor. If I play a role that requires a big personality, I can cheat with the camera. No issues otherwise. I think my height is just right. As I'm broad shouldered, people perceive me as short. In fact, Genelia told me she thought I was 5"4! I was so embarrassed.

Q

Any role models?

Q

Do you always see yourself acting or does any other aspect of cinema interest you?

Yes - my dad, my uncle and my granduncle. My dad studied me. He knew I wanted to be an actor and let me follow my dream. He did want me to get an MBA degree, but there was no pressure. After I won a prize in a book reading competition, my family felt that I had it in me to make it big. I then started grooming myself in dance and other fields. They were golden steps. It involved a lot of hard work. My dad had confidence in me all through the period. My granduncle instilled in me a strong belief that you can work hard and have time for everything at the same time. My uncle never allows stress to spoil his great sense of humor.

As of now, I am just focusing on acting.

The Josh of Jawani

Josh in Hyd: Crowd! The crowd here is mad, cool and has great attitude. Advantages of starting young: Time. I can afford to do one flick an year. In full Josh during: My releases. And to hear that there are girls outside the theatre (grins). And for my 18

AUGUST 2008

family it's a double success so I'm in full Josh now. Message to HJ: I love the name! I'm sure it will be an interesting magazine, and I'd love to read it. He claims he's not ready to pose for the pictures, but poses like he's been doing it forever. It's hard to believe he's 20, because Ram's ready to take on the world.

Be a head turner

D

ressing right is important, whether it is for modeling or boardroom discussions. There is no gainsaying that. There may be umpteen dos and don'ts associated with particular offices, situations and occasions, but one incontrovertible fact is that looking one's best is the sine qua non for success. The simple plain truth across the world is that looks count and sell! It can make or break your day.

Regardless of one's occupation, dressing right is of supreme importance. Good first impressions are a cinch with proper dressing. It speaks volumes about your persona. It is a predominant factor, if not the overriding one, for people to make crucial assumptions about your professional capabilities and integrity. Good looks are a vital part of your credentials, regardless of your expertise and qualifications. Nonverbal factors like handshake, eye contact, body language, posture, listening skills, grooming, accessories and the like are important factors in making hiring decisions, with clothing taking the pride of place. Most high-profile workplaces and MNCs are perfect settings where true-blue professionals are seen almost obsessively particular about their clothes. What they wear reflects a harmonious fusion of elegance, style, etiquette and ĂŠlan. Of course, the day of the week, the time of the day, and the occasion (formal or informal) determines what one chooses to wear. The clothes your wear at the workplace are important in terms of their suitability, taste and character. They reveal your attitude and speak a lot about the organizational culture as well. Most people you frequently deal with assess your professional attainments in terms of the way you dress, whether you like it or not and whether you find it logical or not. What you know about your job and how much you know is somehow linked to the way you package yourself for the outside

world. If you are dressed appropriately, that in itself is deemed an indicator of your confidence levels. Your dressing etiquette oozes confidence and assurance. Aside from such basic considerations, you need to dress respectfully so that you don't end up annoying the powers that be. It will be childish on your part to dress gaudily or too flashily, because even a stray comment can leave your self-esteem in tatters. Dress sense is not complete unless one has a clear understanding of what suits a particular physical structure. What suits a lanky person may not be appropriate for a podgy individual. If you have a beanbag-like body, the extra and disorganized pounds

have to go. Until then, perhaps no dress can work magic on you. Looking slim and picture perfect is no longer limited to ramps, shows and celebrity events. The dire need has spilled over to the entire corporate milieu. In addition to the foregoing factors, personal style establishes the way we look from head to toe. This again is linked to the knowledge of color combinations, what types and style of clothes fit our body, and how best to express the core of our personality through right choices. All this is not to suggest that one needs to grow up in an ambience of highly refined style, high-end sophistication and sartorial derring-do. If you have a lovely body, a sense of good dressing is the icing on the cake in this dress-driven world. „

Pouring life into pure forms An evening with Laxman Aelay By Lasya Vemparala

pics by Malli

As we walk into his studio, scores of his works seem to talk directly to us. This silent unobtrusive communication that visitors invariably have with living specimens of Laxman's journey into the inner world gives snapshots of his fertile imagination.

W

hen I was asked to interview Laxman Aelay, I knew for sure that it would be a brush with one of the finest minds of this century. I knew it would put me on road to an astounding intellectual journey, considering that Laxman belongs to the equivalent of the mile high club among contemporary artists. The journey into the world of his imagination yielded a stimulating body of works that shows pangs and passions, agony and ecstasy, hopes and despair as well as life and death in multitudinous forms.

Laxman's paintings appear like an outgrowth of his personality. They seem to grow out of him, while he dips into his soul for realism. His intellectual products are an amazing blend of imagination and inner vision. Laxman Aelay was born in 1964 at Kadirenigudem in Nalgonda district of Andhra. Before gaining recognition as a professional artist,Laxman,a Commerce graduate, had stints as a signboard painter, designer, journalist, and illustrator of books. He also dabbled in films briefly under the aegis of Ram Gopal Verma. Laxman's works were wellreceived in Telugu literary circles. It did not take long for the painter in him to plumb the depths of fine arts. He studied BFA (Painting) at Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University's College of Fine Arts in Hyderabad. Subsequently, Laxman took to fulltime freelance painting. His ascent in the world of art began in the late 1990s, following an award from the Hyderabad Art Society. Bubbling with enthusiasm, Laxman held his first solo show at the Indian Council of Cultural Relations Art Gallery in Hyderabad in 1999. He then participated in exhibitions, including 'Contemporary Deccan - A New Generation of Artists,' and the Seventh Group show at Surya Art Gallery. He represented the country at an international exposition organized by TANA in Chicago, USA in 1995. After that, he went on to conduct shows in Germany, Denmark, Hong Kong, Christie's,Mumbai, Italy, Paris, Bangkok, Japan and Egypt to name a few. He has participated in one-man shows, group shows and charity shows at various prestigious places and art centers both in India and abroad.

Laxman's paintings appear like an outgrowth of his personality. They seem to grow out of him, while he dips into his soul for realism. His intellectual products are an amazing blend of imagination and inner vision, requiring new vocabulary for depiction. Some of his works belong to his dream world, while others reflect his roots. His works of art leave us floating in the realm of free association of thought. The rustic images have inner rhythm. He translates his vitality into the language of form. One of his finest and most cherished series, 'The river underneath' is rooted in the quest for liberating a region that is a picture of neglect. Tilted oval heads and poignant expressions of pain and anger in some of these works reflect Aelay's own men and women. They have tactile quality and signify emancipation. Whether it is the observer or the work, one sees that singular quality of introspection which is nurtured by solitude. Each torso seems heavy, passive and pensive, with a "selfcontained destiny". He creates an arid human landscape and then fills it with his fertile imagination. He uses human forms to comment on the community. Regardless of the medium he chooses for his works - paper, oil, canvas or whatever - each subtle nuance in his work reflects human figures and forms that have caught his fancy.

Although most artists speak universalistic language, Laxman seems to be proud of his roots. "On my tours abroad, the nativity I brought out in my works interested the audiences so much that their interest in Indian and rustic flavors grew enormously," he exclaims. "Pure human form inspires me most," he says, indicating that it is not a particular muse. And, that pure human form is exactly what he has extensively and passionately studied. Today, the world knows him for his masterly stokes. His creative genius finds fullest expression in his depiction of life, human form and detail. Even the most precious of his works gets dislocated and disjointed if taken away from the native context. Laxman's paintings have a tinge of nostalgia. They depict the rural people he grew up with. He draws heavily on the lives of poverty-stricken people of his village - Kadirenigudem. A sweeping look at his works suggests that he has a strong liking for realistic abstraction through trans mutation, transformation and mutations. Laxman recently switched from white, black and shades of gray (which he has always preferred) to vivid colours for depicting flowers, jewellery and traditional clothing. Noticeably, unlike in the past when he painted normally on large-sized canvases and papers, these days his works are on compact medium. The idea of a multi-headed reality, a recurrent theme in his works, seems fundamental to his symbolism, which pictures life in terms of archetypal polarities embodied in a single being. Folk symbols are dialectical. There is synthesis of life when opposing powers are brought together. Life is full of paradoxes, but energies that seem contradictory work together in a complementary way in Laxman's inner world. Laxman has a very high regard for Jagdish Mittal. He still cherishes the moment when Jagdish Mittal inaugurated one of his shows and showered accolades on his works. The artist treasures Jagdish Mittal's works in his private collection. „

Alter ego

Making your partner a boon companion In any relationship, ultimate bonding takes place when there are no strings attached and both partners are fully satisfied. Their give and take is based on mutual respect, admiration and consideration. Ego is annihilated

G

etting into a relationship with the right person is essential for a long and trouble-free journey in life. It is never a matter of luck. It comes by carefully made choices. Every relationship has its pluses and minuses. In order to nurture a budding relationship, you need to consider yourself, your partner and the core of the relationship. Assuming that you have found the right person, the following are some proven ways to keep that partner fully satisfied. It is no coincidence that they help you too.

Know real needs Making your partner happy induces a great feeling. You can make a person happy by understanding her or his real needs and meeting them if you can. Maybe you cannot meet all of those needs. You can still empathize with your partner. Be patient Every individual is unique, even if we are talking about identical twins. This implies that it is not easy to make every person happy. It is difficult to please some people. No matter how hard you try, you just cannot make some people smile. So being patient with your partner is essential to make a nascent relationship work. 24

Pick words Regardless of how mad you are, do not make comments that could hurt your partner. Remember that words hurt more than a slap on your face (don't read this as a license to slap!). Calm down when your emotion reaches the boiling point. Just keep quiet if you are not in a good mood. Respect rendezvous Never forget any scheduled meetings with your partner. Skipping a rendezvous could mar a nascent relationship. It is also a sign of bad communication. Always let your partner know that you genuinely care about the relationship. Your love for your partner should be palpable. Show kindness Kindness cements

relationships. It is one of the most powerful bonding factors. Unstinted giving and whole-hearted loving strengthens you and your partner.

Listen intently

The best way to let someone know that they matter to you is to listen to them intently whenever they

talk. It includes looking at them directly and responding appropriately. It's not easy to listen to your husband go on and on about a ridiculous business proposition. Listen anyway. It is impossible to listen to your wife whine about the problems of her friend whom you have

Bare your very 'personal' thoughts, dreams, likes and dislikes, desires and needs.

never bothered to meet. Listen anyway.

Communicate at a deeper level It is the art of putting thoughts truthfully into words for better understanding. Include your deepest feelings when you are sharing the day's events. Bare your very 'personal' thoughts, dreams, likes and dislikes, desires and needs. After sharing all of that with your partner, you should let your companion know that others are not privy to such information.

Go beyond face value Your partner's appearance may not be the only thing that deserves appreciation. Complimenting character and ability is equally important. There may be umpteen things in your partner about which you may not have had any inkling, but which could be the very source of his motivation. Identify those attributes and let your partner know that you too feel strongly about them. „ - Lasya, Models: Sunilla, Nilesh

Striking a chord

By Anjali

P

erseverance pays, more so in showbiz. The quintessence of this is Smitha , the svelte Hai Rabba gal from Hyderabad who has evolved into a serial show-stopper with her mesmerizing beauty and heart-warming numbers. It all began in 1999 with the release of her maiden pop album in Hindi. In little less than a decade, this siren has done everything under the rule book to stay on course, regardless of the obstacles. She dabbled in stage shows, experimented with remixes, gained a foothold in anchoring, sweated it out at the gym to carve a shapely figure, and, finally, resisted the temptation to make it big as an actor. All the while, she never swerved from the path of her first love: singing. With her latest album 'Smitha' making waves, Smitha is on cloud nine. Credited with getting pop and remix to Telugu music lovers, she now has her sights set on making it big with an international release. There is spring in her step, magic in her voice, confidence in her talk and a well-set goal on her mind. Watch every move of hers. She is Smitha. You can't help being smitten by her. Content with her professional life that has now attained dizzying heights, this lissome lady, adorned with grace that will put many an actress to shame, bared her innermost aspirations in a candid interview to Hyderabad Josh. Excerpts:

HO: Tell us about your journey in the world of music. What led to Hai Rabba? S: I have always been interested in singing. It has been my consuming passion. Hai Rabba came into picture much later. After I won accolades in Paduta Theeyaga, I realized that I had it in me to take up singing as a career. I steeled myself to take up challenges, as I had tremendous support from my family, especially Mom who has been with me through thick and thin. Finally, production started in (fumbles for dates and gets help from her family) 1998. We released it: initially in Hindi and then in Telugu in '99. That was also the period when I was deeply into athletics and music. Besides, I was the Cultural Secretary of my school. So, you can clearly see the connection. It was a natural progression. Dance came into my life after Hai Rabba. HO: Why did you opt for Hindi pop scene as your launch pad, instead of Telugu? S: Nothing much was happening then in Telugu in terms of pop music. On the contrary, the pop era had begun in Hindi. We couldn't risk doing it first in Telugu. Later, when I saw the reaction from Telugu listeners and sensed the

market potential here, I stuck to Telugu. HO: You are credited with getting pop and remix into Telugu. Do you believe that? S: Yes, I guess so. We then had a great team: Mehboob wrote the lyrics, Ahmed Khan directed the video and Sree was the music director. In Telugu, Chandrabose wrote the lyrics. Before Hai Rabba, pop and remix were uncharted territories in Telugu. HO: Could you tell us about your first big hit, the best compliment you got for it, and your reaction? S: My first big hit was my first release Hai Rabba. The sales in Andhra Pradesh alone crossed two lakh copies. That in itself is a compliment! I then started learning music. Until then I never considered formal training in music. I just knew I had a flair for it. When I look back, it was definitely cute, but not something that I would do now. Even actors have that gut feeling. Perhaps Rekha or Sridevi may not like how they looked in their early movies. They may feel embarrassed now. Nonetheless, I'm not embarrassed. For me, it was a learning experience. HO: What is your opinion on

remixes? The older crowd disapproves of it, while the younger elements seem tired of the same old techno. S: We need to see both sides of the coin. I tend to agree with both the sides on specific matters. Reminding people of rich old melodies like Masaka Masaka is good as long as the original flavor is retained. Even today not everyone knows that it is a remix. There are people who think it's my song. It will be nice if remixes are done well. If you listen closely, you can find a tinge of the original playback in my songs‌ People shouldn't listen to the song and think 'What a mess!' As long as it is kept like that, it is good. Now it's all a moneymaking exercise, with no effort and no clothes on the so-called 'Item girls.' The whole thing just kills the original song. I don't appreciate that. HO: What do you think of Hyderabad's Page 3 culture? Do you see yourself as a P3P? S: I'm a celebrity. When I attend parties, I am photographed because I'm famous. It's not the other way round. I'm quite popular. There's no need for me to be featured on Page 3. People know me as a singer. I've never wanted to be on Page 3. It never makes me feel good. AUGUST 2008

HJ: How would you define your music style? S: I concentrate on making it such that I first like it thoroughly. For instance, my new album ('Smitha') has different sounds. It has elements from Punjabi tunes, Rajasthani folk music, romantic love ballad, Indian hip-hop and the like. There is a lot of variety in it. My style is a combination of all of my favorite genres. Internationally too, albums are of specific genres. With artistes, it is never like that. Artistes like to experiment.

Smitha Stats

HJ: What's your mantra for fitness? How did you become size zero?

S: My first Tamil album sold very good numbers. I was already Sony's artiste in Tamil Nadu. The video was my own production. In fact, it has been so right from the first album of mine. After the final product was ready, they saw it and liked it. They bought the Hindi and Tamil rights. The Telugu rights are mine. All of them are doing well.

S: I've been crazily working out, day in and day out, sometimes spending 7-8 hours a day. I pack into my fitness routine different activities: dance, gym, cardio, kickboxing or whatever. In fact, everything that interests! Naturally, I lost weight. I have since maintained my weight.

Ambition: To top the billboard charts

HJ: What was the objective of your training in the US?

Party time: Anywhere and anytime, as long as there's good company

S: I went to the US in 2006 for three months mainly to get trained in various aspects of music and dance. I wanted proper exposure to the international scene, because ultimately that's where I want to be. I learned gymnastics, jazz, ballet, body language and style, hip-hop, dance, voice modulation and accent.

The set was humungous, the dancers were British‌I am happy with the glamour and the larger-than-life aspect of the first video. The second video is my personal favorite. It gave me a lot of satisfaction as an artiste and as a performer. HJ: How come Sony BMG showed interest in a bilingual pop album?

Profession: Singer

B'Day: 4th September

S: This time I and my family wanted to get out an album that would be on par with any Bollywood audio and video. Bosco-Ceaser and I planned the first video and wanted it to look like a song from a Bollywood production.

To put it in one word, my music style is 'Smitha'.

I still work out about four hours a day. As a Virgo, I am a perfectionist. Nothing ever satisfies me. I always end up thinking that every performance can be bettered. Moreover, I want to look good, regardless of my outfit. As far as 'Smitha' is concerned, I personally like the second video, as I lost several pounds during that time. More importantly, I like the way I was presented. I know I look skinny. That's because I still haven't reached my target.

Name: Smitha

HJ: What do you feel about your new album? Are you happy with the various aspects of the video?

AUGUST 2008

HJ: How do you rate the response to the album? S: I'm not aware of the numbers in Tamil and Hindi, but it's among the Top Five in all music charts. I'm very happy with the response so far. It cost us a lot of money, considering it's an album and not a movie. With crores of rupees already sunk in it, it's difficult to recoup the investment because of piracy and the easy downloads available today. If you go by the number of albums bought to the times downloaded, it is 1:10 ratio. Even then, at least for artistes like me, this is a passion. It is not a money-spinning enterprise. The quality of music is important. HJ: Tell us about your family. S: We are from Vijayawada. My mother's side is politically inclined, including my grandparents. My father's side is more into business. There is hardly anyone inclined towards music or cinema. My mom's a singer. I would say I'm living her dreams. I'm married since the last four and a half years.

HJ: What's your normal day like? S: Every day is different. Right now, it's all exciting, challenging and hectic. There are a whole lot of things to balance while working on a new album - right from handling the press to working out between the whiles. HJ: You were on the threshold of becoming an actor. Any major roles in the pipeline? S: I prefer to forget it. It was an

impulsive decision, spurred by my well wishers. During Malleshwari, I was in the same foul mood that the character I played (a contract killer) had. People around me hyped that role. Everyone said it is a very good team of people to work with. So I did it. Masaka Masaka shooting was about to begin in a few days' time, and I had the time. But I never looked at getting into acting. Maybe an off-beat movie based on art and dance or even on martial arts is something I would consider. But, nothing mainstream. I was offered a

role in a song sequence in Ready. But I declined it. No more cameos or movies for me. I just want to concentrate on my singing. HJ: When you are not making videos, what do you like to do? S: I have a saloon (Bubbles, in Jubilee Hills), but I hardly go there. If at all I go there, it would be for services.

significant performers in India. Maybe I shouldn't say that. I've seen Sunita Rao on stage. She's quite good. I think in India the concept of performing artistes has not really caught on. Currently the Indian market is only about Bollywood films & music and stage shows.

HJ: Could you list your favorites among musicians, singers, actors and

You hardly see a pop act around these days. There are good artistes. There is absolutely no lack of audience. Still, there is no support. Even channels hardly play independent videos or

albums. They too concentrate on films.

S: I grew up listening to Rehman and of course Illayaraja. Keeravani and Harris Jayaraj are also on my favorite list. Ashaji (Bhonsle) is my favorite singer. She's versatile. She's still going strong. Nag's my favorite actor. I also like Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan. I like Madonna, Beyonce and Shakira.

Rendezvous

Shop for love L

ove birds will go far from the madding crowd at the drop of a hat. If it happens to be the beginning of courtship, absolute privacy is simply nonnegotiable. Nothing is left to chance, because every gesture they make, every song they croon, every touch they feel, every joke they share, every chocolate they unwrap and, above all, every kiss they are dying to plant is meant strictly for that special someone with whom they want to traverse life's beautiful journey. Everybody else, including their 'best friend,' is an intruder in their idyllic world.

pics by M.C. Shekar

Before concrete jungles spread across Hyderabad, the nearly 450-year-old city, with sobriquets like the 'City of Lakes' and the 'City of Gardens,' had a plethora of ethereal places to unwind where rendezvous among lovers was common. Alas! How many gardens do we have today that can rank as nurseries for blossoming love? And, how may lakes? The number of gardens and parks where lovers can have a gala time has been declining with each passing year. Today, lovers have fewer choices when it comes to a meeting point that is close to their college, but not very close to their homes. Thanks to the fastchanging landscape of Hyderabad, these days many lovers find it easy to go to

30

AUGUST 2008

malls, multiplexes, coffee shops and posh eateries that have sprung up everywhere, instead of dashing off to Indira Park, Public Gardens or some such place. Since they can afford the luxury of such exotic ambience, parks and gardens have become passĂŠ. Whether it is for whispering sweet nothings, treating one's lover on his or her birthday or exchanging the long-resisted first kiss, these love-lost teens or preteens, find malls, multiplexes, bookstores and cafes conducive to their courtship. The semblance of privacy which the bushes offer in parks is not enough for the current crop of 'bold' lovers. They all want a pricey seclusion that is insulated from prying eyes and Peeping Toms. They want love zones that have no red signals, traffic or no traffic. This explains why lovers have shifted their base. They now have innumerable haunts to meet, eat and have all the josh. There is City Centre mall, Hyderabad Central, CafĂŠ Coffee Day, Shopper's Stop, Lifestyle, Big Bazaar etc. These love birds don't croon love songs anymore in parks. They go to these places handin-hand, giggle, and talk nothing but romance. Those frequenting these heartwarming places ensure that their wallet is loaded with cash and a couple of credit or debit cards. Otherwise, they cannot pander to their

potential life partner's fine-tuned tastes, strong likes and cravings. Two is company - for that matter, any number of twos, as long as they are left alone. These New Age lovers never mind if someone is watching them. They browse the mall for fun or do window shopping. There is a woman in every girl and a man in every boy. Once inside the mall, the girl will flit from one counter to the other, gleefully listing out, for the listening pleasure of her boyfriend, what perfume she likes, what brand of clothes she would like to wear and which line of make-up she uses now or wants to try next. If the guy is smart, he will know that she is actually making discreet suggestions that he should buy something that has just caught her fancy, even if it means he has to go back home broke that evening. His only consolation is that there's always a tomorrow! Who said love is in the air only in gardens? „

dolizing a celebrity is natural. But, breaking the record one's idol holds calls for grit of the highest order. Koneru Humpy, India's lovely Chess Grandmaster, belongs to this ilk. At 15 years, one month and 27 days, Koneru became the world's youngest Woman Grandmaster to achieve full Grandmaster status, beating the record of her idol Judith Polgar, who achieved the feat at 15 years, four months and 27 days. Koneru made international headlines with a string of achievements in what was considered a male preserve. She in fact went beyond storming the male bastion by breaking new ground with hard work and sheer determination. A native of Gudivada, Andhra Pradesh, Humpy was originally named "Hampi." Her father later changed her name to Humpy, which sounds like a Russian name. She became Asia's youngest International Woman Master in 1999. In 2001, she won the World under-14 championship in Spain. Humpy won the World Junior Girls Championship at Athens in 2001. In 2002, she became the first woman chess player from India to receive the Grandmaster title. In 2006, she participated in the Women's World Chess Championship, but was eliminated in the second round. Her October 2007 FIDE Elo rating was 2606, placing her at number two in the world for women (behind Judith Polgar). She broke the record of 2577 set by Susan Polgar for the second-highest ranked female player in chess history and became the second woman player ever, after Judith Polgar, to cross the 2600 Elo mark. _

Girl power "There is so much freedom for women today that someone who's seen the city then and sees it today after a gap will never believe its growth. You can't imagine how striking the change is for a man who's seen both worlds." 34

Y

ou see her at the office. You see her at the canteen. You see her shopping, sometimes alone, at a mall. You see her sipping coffee at a hangout with a gang of friends or simply reading her recently-bought copy of Unaccustomed Earth. And you see her again in a pub, having a blast. Her male counterparts might appear next day at office bleary-eyed, but this gal will have her mascara right in place and eyes as bright as ever. She's there for her family when she's needed --which is always. And her finances are all hers to handle. This is not about one particular girl. Welcome the new-age Hyderabadi Girl, making an impact locally and globally, in small or big ways. With IT boom, retail boom and real estate boom, awesome girl power has taken the city by storm. You see girl gangs as much as you see guys hanging out in coffee pubs, sports clubs and malls. And no one is surprised to find a girl alone at a movie anymore. 'Only one ticket?' is not the response that a girl out on her own in the city's multiplexes hears today. 'C-3, third row from top, Rs.100' is what they hear. And out comes the international visa/mastercard. Kaching. Says Sadhana Ramchander, CEO of Blue Pencil Info Design, a Publishing Support Service she started along with her husband. "I find Hyderabad to be a relatively safe place. In the early 80s, I found the public transport an issue with eve-teasing being ever present. So, I got my own vehicle and things have been much better since then. I grew with the traffic here, so I don't find it as alarming as someone who starts driving now. Hyderabad was a quieter place back then. Today, Hyderabad has something to offer to everyone, especially culturally -- something is always happening." She adds that her only grouse is not having access to a good sports club, because the membership is restricted to old Hyderabadi families. Girls having their own vehicles and zooming away on the city roads is so commonplace that no one gives it a second thought anymore. With

careers and lifestyles changing so rapidly, can fashion be far behind? Fashion Designer Mansi thinks people are more aware of brands today. "Girls wouldn't take so much trouble to dress the right way. Now they know what club wear is and what to wear to any specific event. No one wants to look underdressed or overdressed. Fashion is something that's changing in Hyderabad, becoming more global." Anatara Satchidanand, an NRI writer and educationalist, agrees. "I went to Prasad's yesterday and couldn't believe what I saw girls look so happening here!" Girl power from female perspective is one thing. What do Hyderabadi men think about the fair sex in the city? Thotha Vaikuntam, world-renowned artist who is known for portraying traditional Telangana women, is one Hyderabadi who's seen the city and its women's transition firsthand. He concedes that there is a world of a difference. "There is so much freedom for women today that someone who's seen the city then and sees it today after a gap will never believe its growth. You can't imagine how striking the change is for a man who's seen both worlds." He believes that the main cause of this change is the access to education that the older generation of women did not have. "The cultural movement, from here to the West and back home, is what's causing change in attitudes and outlook. The MNCs also contribute to it." What are the drawbacks, if any? The artist says "Previously to go out of the house was an issue, but today there is no place without women. Girls used to work in select places or for known people. They'd wear half-sarees back then. Today, its jeans and skirts. For conservative minds it looks like the culture and the women's lifestyle has been 'spoilt,' but that's not the case. That mindset is alien today. Girls and boys work together everywhere." Theater enthusiast Rathna Shekar opines, "Hyderabad is still conservative in many ways, especially when it comes to women. With people from all over India staying here because of their jobs, the cosmopolitan crowd is increasing and things have changed tremendously in the past five years. With starting pay packages that our parents got in their peak, confidence is sky high. But openness is area-dependent". Men view women differently today and are not so quick to judge. It's a slow process, but it's happening-slowly, but surely. Anand Sharma, a young Hyderabadi from New York and a globetrotter, has seen and worked with girls in different parts of the world. "Hyderabadi girls are not that impulsive and will take their time in thinking and making decisions. I would say they are almost on par with girls in other cities. I say almost because when it comes to grabbing challenges, stepping up and speaking up and living life for the day, gals here are still far behind as opposed to a girl in NY or even a girl in Delhi." Satchidanand concludes for us: in general Hyderabadis are on crossroads, with women having "Old time values with new time goals". The question is how long will it take for women to be really and truly liberated? When will it become totally cosmopolitan with a change in people's mindset on a massive level? Time will provide an answer, but futurists agree that as far as big cities go, Hyderabad is on its way to becoming one in every sense of the word. But somewhere the uniqueness of the city is something every true blue Hyderabadi wants to hold on to -the laidback Nawabi attitude and its charmingly rich interreligious blended culture along with a cosmopolitan global outlook. Women can work hard and party harder as they do now, but with the city letting them be who they are without judgment or intimidation.

“T

he proverb "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" succinctly sums up the reality in many offices today. The Japanese, known for their almost obsessive loyalty towards the company they work for, use the term karoshi to signify 'death from overwork.' In such cases, the actual cause of death could be strokes or a heart attack. Still, investigations would reveal that the primal cause is overwork, because any kind of work stretched beyond a limit will invariably impair health. Overwork can blight a promising career or cut short an individual's meteoric rise in an organization. Promotions, additional perks, the opportunity to go places as well as a litany of achievements and awards hardly count when your health is at stake. The need of the hour is finding the right balance between duty at the workplace and responsibilities at home. Time spent with one's near and dear in the family, rightly called quality time, is as important as work hours. At least some of your colleagues may look askance at you if you set the alarm on your mobile at 5-00 pm to remind you of the time to leave office. Nosey parkers may even pose

innocuous-looking queries like, "How come she is leaving early? In self-justification, they may even add, "Nothing to do, I guess." All of these barbs are taken for granted in offices, because you are expected to work long hours, regardless of what is pinching you in your personal life. There are ways in which you can keep your job and your sanity when your professional life starts overshadowing your personal one. There is no need to toe the line of a leisure-sick society of workaholics.

average workday has considerably lengthened, as corporations, industries and companies are downsizing and workplace tasks have become very complicated, placing a great burden on employees.

Conscientious employees are not averse to working hard, but they would rue if it means dwindling personal time. In such a situation, overwork, far from contributing to an effective workforce, could result in high levels of stress, ill health, decreased morale and reduced productivity among employees. Already the pace of work in modern workplaces is rather stressful. With many couples working to different schedules, balancing family needs with official responsibilities has become a tough task.

In spite of mandates concerning overtime pay, there are important exemptions for executives, administrative personnel and outside sales employees, among others. Some companies promote a work culture that imposes a regimen of overachieving, regardless of the consequences. Stretching implies putting in more than the allotted of hours week after week. Some bosses actually encourage their employees to work harder even if they have already clocked in enormous hours of work. This pitiable situation actually drives workers to quit. The boss too may be overworked, but that is no consolation for those who value their health.

If you are overworking and if you don't put a stop to it early on, you could become so burned out, unproductive and overwhelmed that eventually you will leave the scene without even trying to salvage the situation. Noticeably, the

Researchers say "task saturation" is evident in sectors like consulting and financial services. Why are we working beyond the regular 9-5 slot? It depends on the workplace and the job.

Change often starts with management. If senior managers leave early or late, they set the pace. If they are educating clients that life is life and that there is life after office hours, so be it. The moot question is: Can you be effective after 10 hours of working? Do you take little breaks that are actually conducive to higher productivity? Some practical and tactical moves on your part might help you set the upper limit for the work hours you put in per week in an organization that places a premium on overwork. This can be coupled with effective time management at your level so that you work smart, instead of plodding without a purpose. Just because an employee puts in long hours, it doesn't necessarily mean that he or she is more productive than others. Whether we like it or not, ultimately everybody, including your boss, has a job to do. So the best option is to work smart for the right number of hours, neither more nor less. „

“N

ecessity," they say, "is the mother of invention." For Rama, exclusive costume designer for her husband and ace director Rajamouli, it has been a perfect blend of her own inventiveness and her husband's creativity. This communion of creative juices makes the dazzling pair 'readymade

for each other’. Here is an exclusive interview with Rama Rajamouli.

Q

How did you become a costume designer? Was it by 'design' or fluke?

I would say it was entirely a fluke. Or, maybe it just happened out of sheer

necessity. Being his (Rajamouli's) wife, I always accompany him to the sets. During the making of Simhadri, he was quite unhappy with the costumes. The perfectionist in him stood out, though he failed to put across the actual reason for his displeasure. Fortunately, I sensed what exactly he wanted any why he was

dissatisfied with the way things were moving on the costume front. Then I took the whole thing to its logical conclusion and turned into a costume designer. He badly needed one and I filled the space.

Q

Is it true that you handle the production of all of Rajamouli's films?

I chose to design and handle every actor's costumes. There were three groups in the movie. Everyone had to be differently dressed. There were other characters too. It's not just about costumes here. You have to think of a whole lot of other things. Sye was a very nice experience for all of us. There were a lot of youngsters in the cast and a lot of energy around. It was pure fun.

Nothing like that. I'm basically a

Q

Why is that you work only for your husband? What keeps you from striking it on your own on a larger scale?

I'm a home-loving person. I would have remained a home maker had it not been for my husband's necessity. You see it was not the outcome of my desire. As for bonding, it's professional when we are on the sets. At times, we have some fights concerning costumes (laughs). Otherwise, we never fight.

Rama Rajamouli with family people person. I enjoy being on the sets with him. When something crops up, say a problem or a dicey situation, I offer my suggestions. In production too, problems do arise. I like to handle them without giving room for issues. No one can question me later (she laughs). Direction is not my cup of tea.

Q you?

How is it to work with Rajamouli? Does he leave the whole thing to

What was your maiden experience as a costume designer? Which experience would you rate as the best in your new avatar?

It's quite nice to work with him. He is very clear about what he wants, particularly if costume plays a crucial role in the scene or if he thinks it will make an impact. He doesn't interfere in the color or design part of it. He just gives me the gist of the scene. The advantage I have is that I'm with him right from the conception of the scene.

My first experience as a full-fledged costume designer was very tough. It also proved to be my best experience. This was for Sye. Generally, a costume designer works on the costumes of just one or two actors, specifically those who play the male/female lead roles in the movie. Sye was a movie with many artistes.

So, I am better placed to see eye to eye with him in matters concerning the overall get up. Maybe that's why he wants me to do it. He doesn't have to work hard to communicate what he wants. I deliver what he has in mind. I then coordinate with the cinemato grapher and the art director. Everything has to look right.

Q

Q

When you look at how characters were dressed in movies that were made before Sye, what comes to your mind?

I feel very proud of myself. For that matter, even he didn't realize that the costumes in Student No. 1 were not up to the mark. When I pointed it out during Simhadri, he got it. Telugu industry didn’t have formal designers until recently. But now it’s catching on.

Q

Do all artistes like the costumes you design? Is there no resentment?

Generally it is easy to work with those playing the lead roles. It is also possible that no one dares to pick holes in my work because I'm the director's wife (laughs). They are happy with what I design for them -- if not immediately, later.

Prabhas was initially not happy with the jacket he was asked to don for a scene in Chatrapathi, when the Agni Sankala song picks up on the track. His refrain was that it made him look older. He was not comfortable wearing it. But, I put my foot down and he reluctantly wore it for the scene. When he saw the rushes after shooting, he gushed, 'Thanks darling' (Prabhas' typical style). Nitin didn't want to cut his hair.

[She waves at her husband Rajamouli and taunts: 'You think people want to interview only you?' Those around him burst into laughter, while she returns to Hyderabad Josh's queries with her trademark smile.]

We have a few good family friends in the industry. My husband doesn't go out much, perhaps because he needs me whenever he goes out anywhere (smiles).

Tarak is a really confident kid. He is one of those with the attitude 'I don't care a damn', especially post-weight loss. He is confident that he can carry anything.

Q

Who are your favorites: directors (apart from your husband) and designers?

Q

What's your opinion on depiction of violence and the way women are portrayed in SSR's movies (Ankita, Mamta, Anushka)?

I like the comedy in Jagan garu’s films, the emotions in Vinay garu’s, the logic and freshness in Chandra Shekar Yeleti’s films, the rustic charm and traditions in Krishna Vamsi’s films. Deepa (who designed for Kantri), is good. I told Tarak that's the best he ever looked and congratulated Deepa.

I feel uneasy when I see violence in movies. As for ladies who bare, they seem to dare. Initially even I was hesitant to give them low neck or high skirts. That need not be the case now. These days we come across situations where the ladies themselves willingly show much more than what they are required to for a particular scene. In a way, they are professionals.

Q

Do you think you have blossomed as a designer, considering your professional journey from Sye to Yama Donga?

I'm very confident and assertive now, though I do have trepidation until I see the final product. Whether it's the person playing the lead role or a junior artiste, I work with the singular objective of making everyone happy. I currently don't have assistants to help me with the designing part, but I have helpers. I am trying to get assistant designers though!

Q

Did it ever occur to you that you have been basking in your husband's reflected glory?

Never! Why should it? Had it not been for this (costume designing) people would have known me only through my husband.

44

Q

AUGUST 2008

What do you do in your spare time?

We have a Land Rover. We love to travel by road wherever we go. We both like long drives. My husband likes only movies, cars and shoes! I like to cook. I'm a light reader.

Q

How was your experience as a presenter for Yama Donga?

Since my cousins produced it, my involvement in the film was deeper. I was there for everything. I was playing producer in Cherry's absence as well as assisting and helping wherever I could.

Any costume blunder (in terms of fashion or continuity) on your part?

Assistants take pictures of the actor in costume from top to bottom, so there's no scope for issues with regard to continuity. In respect of design, I did not like the costumes of Anuska and the other girl in the Damma Damma song in Vikramarkudu. I liked the color, but not the design.

Q

Q

I have two hyperactive children. Karthikeya, the older one, is studying Intermediate now. For the past three years he has been focusing on making it big as a cinemato grapher. My daughter is four years old. She keeps me busy. She’s in her pre-KG. Rajamouli is a home-loving person. He loves to be with the family when he is not shooting.

Q

What are your other interests?

Primarily home and kids. I like clothes in general. Although my husband is a music lover, I don't enjoy music at all. I tolerate some songs. I like to watch movies. I have cultivated that habit right from my childhood. We are all foodies in the family.

Q

Tell us a little more about your family?

Designer, producer…what next for Rama Rajamouli?

Perhaps retirement! Right now, I feel that my retirement place should be Vizag. After the completion of every film, I keep saying that I will not design for the next one. Eventually he traps me into it (laughs). When he conceives the scene, I tell him what I think the characters should wear and how they should look. His stock reply is: 'Fine, you do it.'

Q

What gives you josh in Hyderabad?

Food and roads!

Style

Hair affair! When it comes to hairstyle, perhaps there are as many variants as the number of hairs on a well-endowed head. The key to determining the right one for you lies simply in intelligent experimentation, because the type, texture and color of the hair should be in sync with the outline of your face.

A

Every type, texture and color of hair can help evolve a new style. Such is the potential! We have styles that can be tailored for every occasion and for every personality, including those who let only thorough professionals work magic and those who let their own creative juices flow while standing in front of a dressing table. In a way, hairstyles are like stars in the sky, as people can only guess their numbers. No one can precisely quantify their number. It's amazing to consider what all a person can be with his or her hair styled rightly. One needs to be informed and versatile while working on oneself. The best part of hair styling is that it can be undone in a jiffy or prolonged as long as one wants it. In any case, it is not, and cannot afford to be, permanent. This explains why most people like to experiment so much. Experimentation has yielded a rich variety of styles over the years. Leading hair specialists have worked wonders with 130 color shades and 20 funky

fashion sheets. Copper is in now. So is coffee shade. Vibrant colors have made the mark. They are as intense as seductive purple. Style has become such an important aspect of hair that professional hair specialists need to be paid hair-raising sums. In fact, one cannot expect these accomplished hair stylists to quote fixed rates. Their rates fluctuate with reason, in and out of season. A case in point is Hakim Alim Hair and Tattoo Lounge, currently run by style director, Lucas. Aalim is none other than the son of Hakim, celebrated hair stylist for Big B, Dilip Kumar and other Bollywood titans. Aalim's own clientele include celebrities like Yuvraj Singh, M.S. Dhoni, Kajol and Tanushree Dutta. With over a decade's rich experience, he is today the most sought after hair specialist. He has worked with top celebrities including Tollywood stars like Nitin, Ramcharan and Ram. They use major European brands of shampoos and conditioners, including Label, as well as a diverse array of hair sprays, dry shampoo, conditioners, curl saver shampoo, volume shampoo, hydro shampoo and energy shampoos. They use an exclusive color rescuer shampoo, Toni and Guy Insights, a system professional brand. The trend in hairstyles is the long textured, short 'mess up' or 'out of bed' look. Women have more choices. They can carry a 'volumized' look or one with a lot of textured curls, medium or short cut, or a transit hair cut. For men, the prices range from Rs. 475 to Rs. 1600, whereas for women it is between Rs. 675 and Rs. 2,000.

For starters, going short is in itself a hairstyle. When you go in for a short hairstyle, you have a wide range of variants to choose from. The classical bob is probably the most sought-after short hairstyle, particularly because it is trendy and easy to manage. The bob cut can be modified in a variety of ways to make it look completely new. The prominent ones in this category are all-in-one length bobs, inverted bobs, layered bobs and bobs with long, short sweeping, fringed or choppy bangs, among others. Often color and highlights are used to give bobs of any type depth and difference. Apart from the bob, which is, relatively speaking, fairly long compared to other types of short cuts, there are other styles that can 'gel' beautifully with one's persona. If you are keen on going really short, you can opt for the short and sleek style, which is great for deadstraight and full hair. Otherwise, you may go for the short-cropped as well as short and spiky styles that are edgy and fresh. We also have the pixie cuts, which are cute and sexy. Appropriate color and highlighting can make all the difference, be it an ordinary short hairstyle or an extraordinary short hairstyle! Aalim at work AUGUST 2008

49

Like in the case of short hairstyle, there are many variations in long hairstyle. In general, long hair is a complete style statement. Still, it may not work for everyone, especially those with fine or thin hair, as the weight that comes with the length will make hair look stringy and flat. As for those who find long hair appealing, there are myriad ways in which we can put vigor to give it an imperial look.Going curly or straight ening curly hair can lend variety to the way you look on different occasions. Changing your hair color or adding highlights can make an impact on the way you present yourself. They could be easy means to change the way you look or clever moves to herald particular seasons. For instance, some people opt for a highlight during summer. The actual cut of your long hair should be determined in light of various factors, particularly the shape of your

face. The shape of your face is crucial to determine the right haircut. Well-chosen hair style can enhance the overall appearance. Short bangs, sweeping bangs or clear parting of hair can greatly enhance looks. It is essential to have a lot of accessories if you want to keep your long hair stylish and tidy. Even if you are down, your hair need not reflect your spirits! Headbands, laces, ribbons, barrettes, jeweled or beaded clips and pins are the daily staples of long hair devotees. One can see walking specimens of a bewildering variety of hairstyles. Those with a sharp eye will observe qualities, features, bone structures and personalities. This will help determine what's good. Remember, what is perfect for someone else may look outlandish or downright ugly for you. All said and done, if you like a particular type of hairstyle or cut and if you are sure that it will fit you perfectly, you should have a professional tell you how it will look on you. If the professional has a different viewpoint, and if you are told in no uncertain terms that your choice of hairstyle or cut will not do justice to you, go for the next best alternative. There is a bonus to having a plethora of styles, types and cuts. You and your hairdresser can come up with a style variation that gels with your face.

For all you know, the alternative could be better than the one you chose in the first place.

ike all good things in life, computers have a flip side too. Instant messaging, chat rooms, e-mail boxes and the like facilitate online affairs. The novelty of the medium makes the feeling all the more irresistible. Even mature adults may find it difficult to resist the temptation of online flirting that could ripen into a fullfledged affair with or without physical contacts. This morning you were uncontrollably in tears at office. Your best friend wondered why and asked you to calm down first. You decided to reveal what's pinching you. You can't believe that your spouse has been cheating on you. You are dying to know who has 'netted' your spouse. This is a high-tech malaise that is a consequence of online affairs. Who doesn't use a computer these days? Computers are excellent for online banking, paying bills, staying in touch with family, catching up with friends, keeping track of customers to establish a lasting relationship, mining information and for a host of other productive purposes. In fact, today we cannot imagine a life without them. The way computers influence our lives is just phenomenal. Online affairs constitute a small bit that can crush the feelings you once had for your first crush or whatever. There are some common indicators of online affairs and knowledge of tale-tale signs of internet-induced marital indiscretions would help make sense of your maddening suspicions. It is always better to err on the side of caution, as only mature judgment can help you distinguish between what is real and what is mere hearsay. In any case, you need to ensure that proper checks and balances are in place. Regardless of the degree of such violations of the sacred marital bond, online affairs are a bane of today's net-driven society. There are those who carry online affairs too far. They don't have any compunction wrecking their marriage in the process. How can you be sure that your spouse is negating the marriage vows through clandestine online activities? The following

are some indicators that you need to take into account while making discreet enquiries or surreptitious investigations: -

damaging both hardware and software. The loss of files occurs when a computer is cut off abruptly.

Your spouse or partner spends just far too much time on computer. You know that it cannot be bracketed with your child's sustained interest in the computer for those games. If your spouse has been concealing, frequently changing or protecting passwords, or hiding instant message "buddy lists", Internet email accounts and emails from you, then your anxiety is understandable.

Your spouse almost instinctively clears a screen, turns off the monitor, or changes to another internet page out of fear of exposure. Over a period of time, such acts could develop into a full-fledged habit and

We all appreciate the fact that we need our own 'space' even on the computer. Still, the very act of hiding information is antithetical to a sound relationship. There is a possibility that something seriously awry has been going on without your knowledge. This implies the need to listen, because any time your spouse becomes secretive with you, it reflects a need that has not been demonstrably met. Furthermore, your spouse could be breaking the matrimonial law by committing adultery. Noticeably, your partner uses the computer after you have gone to bed. On the face of it, there may be nothing wrong with it. But, when your spouse uses it in the middle of the night, something is amiss. If you see a pattern, you need to be alert. While working late normally reflects a deeper sense of professional commitment and loyalty, working late repeatedly, and that too, only after you have fallen asleep calls for a probe. Your partner abruptly shuts off the internet and/or computer when you approach. This is clearly intolerable behavior. The rationalization here is, "When all other contingency plans fail, just shut that thing off and don't get caught." This act, also called a "computer crash," has the downside of

would mean insulation from detection. In most instances, having the lead-time to hide the truth from you is all they need. Your spouse exhibits a compulsive need to be online and seems defensive when confronted to stop. Then make suggestions like, "We really need to go now, what's taking so long?" or "Can't you do that later?" The foregoing are some symptoms of a relationship in trouble. It may be easy to justify an online affair, but the consequences, like breach of trust or hurt, can be definitely damaging. Loving couples that share everything always discuss everything, including the most intimate information, photos or event with strangers in emails, chat rooms or instant messaging. One must consider the pros and cons of sharing personal information. Some of it could actually be reserved for marital harmony.

Kute Kajal ki karishma

By Prabhu

N

ot all wannabe actresses would dare to work with a director bandied about as one who would slap artistes at the drop of a hat. Kajal Agarwal is made of steel. She has made it big by choosing to work with hard taskmasters, grinning and bearing it all whenever she was hauled over the coals. Vetern film journalist Prabhu talks to Kajal for Hyderabad Josh.

Q

. How is it going these days? Presently you are on the sets of Rajamouli. Do you enjoy working with Rajamouli and Ramcharan?

A. It's highly enjoyable. Rajamouli sir is a workaholic. He is very jovial. He is a thorough professional. Ramcharan is very friendly and a wonderful fellow artiste to work with.

Q

Was your entry into films accidental or comeuppance?

A. It was quite accidental. I never planned an entry into films. Even today finding myself on the wall posters surprises me.

Q

Tell us how it all happened?

A. I was born and brought up in Mumbai. After completing my Bachelor's degree in Mass Media, I was preparing to do MBA. I was then associated with L'Oreal India Ltd as a model. Their in-house photographer took my snaps and, without my knowledge, sent some of the photos to various offices.

54

AUGUST 2008

Somehow they appeared on the net and caught the attention of director Bharathi Raja. Immediately they approached me. Till then my mind was not attuned towards films. As I had no reason to say 'no,' I said 'yes' and that was the beginning. I started my career under the direction of Bharathi Raja sir. My maiden film was 'Bommalata,' which was made simultaneously in Telugu, Tamil and Hindi. That film was not released.

Initially it was very hard and suffocating to work under Teja sir. If my performance was not up to his expectations, Teja sir used to shout at me. I used to be in tears. In fact, my eyes became Ganga and Yamuna. For your information, except for my father, nobody dares to shout or glare at me. But Teja sir is one and the only person who made me cry and cry. At times, I used to question myself, "Do I need to undergo all this?"

Later, I got a call from director Teja sir. Having seen my stills on the net, Teja sir offered me a role in 'Laxmi Kalyanam'. Though Bommalata was my first film in terms of signing, Laxmi Kalyanam turned out to be my debut.

But, when I saw the first copy of 'Laxmi Kalyanam,' I felt overwhelmed. I then started recollecting all the incidents -- when, where and how I was pulled up. Had Teja sir not been so strict and hard that incredible result wouldn't have come out of me. It was then that I realized that any novice must work with Teja sir to debut as a successful heroine. It is essential to perfect our skills in this profession.

Q

Did you have any prior experience in acting?

A. Yes. I did my schooling in St. Ann's High School, Colaba. As part of school and college functions, there were some performances at which I played some roles. That's about it. I did not do that with the intention of becoming an actress. For a very long time it remained just as a childhood memory.

Q

Did you find it easy to work with Teja?

A. It was quite hot, hard and great. If Laxmi Kalyanam were not my first film, I wouldn't have become a professional. Actually, when I signed for 'Laxmi Kalyanam' people scared me a lot by telling me story after story about Teja sir. So, I went fully prepared to the sets of Laxmi Kalyanam.

Q

Do you consider yourself lucky for not being slapped by Teja?

A. Yes, of course! I have heard a lot about his slaps. Fortunately in my case it ended with just shouts -- at least his B.P. levels did not shoot up to warrant slapping. For that I thank God and myself.

Q

How was it working with Krishnavamsi for Chandamama?

A. Chandamama (moon) is considered a symbol of pleasantness and coolness. By nature Krishnavamsi sir is like a real Chandamama. He is known for keeping the people on the sets and the atmosphere very cool and pleasant. Coming down from the

I am very understanding and very friendly natured. I try to understand the people from their point of view. So the quality I like in myself is my ‘positive thinking’

sets of Teja sir and joining the sets of Krishnavamshi sir is like coming out of Suryamandalam and entering Chandra mandalam. In any case, working for Chandamama will remain etched in my memory for ever. Right at the beginning of my career I had the opportunity of working with two great directors having contrasting dispositions. It helped me learn a lot and love my profession.

Q

Do you have any regrets for entering the film field?

A. No‌ not at all. Day by day and from one film to another my love for the profession keeps increasing. Given the success of my films, I can say loudly and proudly that I am very much into it.

Q

Tell us about your personal life and family members?

A. I come from a very orthodox and conservative family. It is just me, my father, Suman Agarwal, my mother, Vinay Agarwal and my younger sister, Nisha Agarwal. Dad is a businessman. We are very much attached to each other. Particularly I am dad's darling. We have relatives all over the world. We all give great importance to human values and human relations. We maintain cordial relations with people.

Q

What was your parents' reaction when you declared your intention to enter the world of films? A. Actually, it was not my sole decision. When Bharathi Raja sir approached me, there was a round table conference at home. Finally, Dad and Mom accepted the proposition and wished me all the best. We were neither anxious nor negative about the whole thing. They left it to my decision.

Q

Most Indian parents don't like to see their daughters enter the film field? How and why did your parents consider your proposal positively?

A. What you said is true. Indian parents don't show interest in seeing their daughters on the silver screen. It is a fact that when girls from respectable families run after filmmakers they may face a lot of problems. It is said that girls are forced to yield to some indecent proposals. It may have been true some time back. Today, the situation is entirely different. Nowadays the tinsel town is looking for good looking and talented girls. In my case, I was offered a role. I never ran after one. I made the choice. I can very confidently say that nothing can erode my parents' faith in me.

Q

General everybody has to condemn the shameless, ruthless and meaningless exposure of women. Whether Indian or non- Indian a women is a women and not a commodity. She is to be treated and respected equally.

Among South Indian filmmakers, who treats you best in terms of money and otherwise?

So that's why you prefer doing Telugu films?

A. In general, everybody has to condemn the shameless, ruthless and meaningless exposure of women. Be it an Indian or a nonIndian, a woman is a woman and not a commodity. She has to be treated right and respected. When we talk about exposure of Indian heroines, we have to accept that it is not healthy. In most cases, the heroines are helpless. They are doing what they don't want to do.

Q

In which of the south Indian languages do feel comfortable in delivering dialogues?

A. Naturally it's Telugu. I am almost six films old in Telugu. I am now conversant with the language. What is it that you like much in your self?

What is it that you don't like in your self?

A I am very closely and sensitively attached to my family. Sometimes it becomes unbearable to be away from my family I know that it's my strength as well as my weakness.

Q

What are your hobbies and habits?

Can you recollect one incident that gave you a pleasant surprise?

Now you are among the prominent heroines. What is your opinion about the way women are being exposed and exploited on the Indian screen?

A. I prefer doing Telugu films. It is not just because I get big money. I like the nice treatment and the characters I am being offered.

Q

A. Aamir Khan and Sridevi. I like them very much because of their astonishing performances and glamour. I adore Sridevi. She is a perfect blend of glittering glamour and a dazzling performance. She is a versatile actress.

Q

A. Obviously, Telugu. The standards of film making and treatment are quite high only in Telugu.

A. I am very understanding and very friendly by nature. The other quality I like in myself is my positive thinking.

Who are your favorite Hero and Heroine?

A. Yes… When I was doing my degree in Mass Communication there was one subject about films. So for practicals, a batch of 60 students was brought to Ramoji Film City, Hyderabad. I was stunned to see the way the studio has been built. That trip remains a wonderful memory. After a couple of years, I entered the same Ramoji Film City as an actress! That was a pleasant surprise. I believe in destiny.

Q

Q

Q Q

Apart from Rajamouli's film, what are the other films you are doing?

A. I am doing one Tamil film 'Modi vilayadu' in which Saran is the hero. In Telugu, I am doing one film with Allu Arjun under the direction of Sukumar. I am considering some offers from Kannada and Malayalam producers.

Q

A. As far as food and dressing are concerned, I am a pure Indian. I love to wear saree and salwar kameez. I eat whatever is tasty. I like the policy of eating to live… not living to eat.

A. My main hobby is to watch films. I like to move with my friends and family members.

Q

Do you save money? Are you a miser or a spendthrift?

A. I have never been short of money. I don't have any surplus. I just have enough of it. I respect money. I am neither a miser nor a spendthrift.

Q

Do you like Indian food and dressing?

As far as my case is concerned, people say that I look like the girl next door. People like to see me in decent and sensible attire only. Hence, the question of exposing doesn't arise for me. At the same time, I don't blame nor despise heroines who reluctantly reconcile to exposing themselves. It's simply the choice they make to win in the rat race.

Q

Of all the characters you did and are doing, is there any one character that reflects you?

A. In all the characters I did, I could see a part of myself. Some aspect of the characterization in each of the roles resembles Kajal Agarwal.

The breathtaking colour is sea-green and the price ranges from Rs. 4,000/- to Rs. 25,000/-. Launched in 1979 as Neeru Emporium at King Koti, the store has blosommed into the city’s pride, thanks to the lovely couple who own it and shower personal care. Harish Kumar named the chain after his wife Neeru. The first branch was started in Abids and the second in Somajiguda. The best and the flagship store from Neeru's is 4th Elite, tied up with Lifestyle, Hyderabad Central and Mega Mart. Shortly, a premier mall is being launched in GVK Mall and another prestigious outlet is coming up at the Shamshabad airport shortly. The everlasting impression of zari woven borders, highlighted with antique-look zardosi in a ten-kali lehenga is perfect for the occasion.

The city of Hyderabad even hosted a Ghagra Festival in July to promote the traditional wear with a contemporart touch to it. Ghagra is a traditional (nevertheless worn by modern women) Indian garment worn originally by Indian women from the State of Rajasthan. The ghaghra is actually a long skirt made in such a way that it is pleated from the waist and let loose, comfortable and flowing all the way down.

pics by M.C. Shekar

Ghunghat is one ensemble that has timeless appeal, and seems to have caught the fancy of newage brides, especially the NRIs this wedding season with Swarowski stone work embellished available exclusively in cherry red. Blue, maroon and pink go by order. The price range starts from Rs. 6,000 and goes upto 1,30,000/- And the nonbridal collection ranges between Rs. 6000 and 10,000/-.

It is tied at the waist with draw strings. A 'choli' or short blouse which comes up to the top of the skirt is worn on top. This ghaghra- choli set can be worn either with or without a 'dupatta,' which is a long thin shawl draped over the shoulders. Some of them come with heavy embroidery and rich designs, which are usually worn on special occasions. Newer silhouettes such as the fitted mermaid and fish cuts for the skirt with blouses that range from an off- shoulder or backless choli to a corset are seen on the mannequins. Fabrics lightweight jacquard and shaded georgettes are just right for crafting those sheer drapes. Nets are no more lined with crushed tissue, but with subtle yet imperial jacquard. The reason for its popularity is probably that it keeps evolving with lots of variations across time. The Bollywood influence shapes the choices. "Woh jo Kareena Kapoor ne pehna tha (the one that Kareena Kapoor had worn) is the way, the would-bebrides now go about their choice of a ghagra. „

ilm stars have tight schedules so much so that some of their call sheets are booked months in advance. It is indeed a Herculean task for producers and directors to bring many film stars together at the sets even for the purpose of shooting at a particular time. This is not the case with pubs, going by what happened the other day at Zouk, where many film stars turned up one after the other for unwinding, and stayed up until the early hours. For once, Hyderabad Josh got a chance to click the stars without their make-up and script-driven costumes. The stars were in their elements.

Inter‘active’ girl

Gadusu Pilla rules city airwaves Putting a 1000-watt smile on the face of a man caught in Hyderabad's maddening traffic jam or lightening the spirit of a scooter mechanic working hard in his dingy room is a tall order. Only Gadusu Pilla (Smart girl) can do it with panache 66

wo years ago, 22-year-old Gowthami, who had just completed engineering, walked into the plush office of Radio City 91.1 for a voice test that she never even dreamt would change the course of her life. They tested the style, tone, tenor and modulation of her voice, and, after the battery of tests, gave the bubbly girl a break as a radio jockey (RJ). She grabbed the offer with both hands and anointed herself as Gadusu Pilla. In no time, the mesmerism behind the Gadusu Pilla's vivacious voice, her titillating tone, teeny tenor and magical modulation started dominating the airwaves. Gowthami sashayed into the hall of fame and currently has a terrific fan following. Right now, there are hundreds of Romeos willing to do anything at her bidding. Even girls adore her, going by what's posted on blogs and written in her fan mail.

Gowthami has a mellifluous voice, which she deftly uses with a choice of words that could be at once naughty, mischievous, humorous, josh, taunting, silly or funky. She'll adopt any ploy to rev up your spirits. That's her repertoire every day, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. She oozes confidence and reigns supreme with absolute authority over what she talks and how she presents. She can punch in any song from any film without a modicum of discomfort. That is her forte. Such is the impact of her breezy interaction with listeners that people take traffic jams easy if they happening to be listening to her inside their vehicles. With a captivating smile, Gowthami, looks like a cute doll. A Scorpion, she has a sting in her tale every time she goes on air. Here is a rendezvous with Gowthami who is always full of joie de vivre.

Well, Radio City 91.1 has a policy. In Hyderabad, I can play adult contemporary music. We strongly believe in providing high quality content. This sets us apart from others. RJ?

Did you undergo any training to be an

Well, I went through console training, which is technical in nature. What advice would you give to wannabe RJs? Be yourself and don't put on airs.

broaden my outlook and widen my horizons. How do you establish a rapport with listeners? I talk of only positive things about them and avoid asking them embarrassing questions. I try not to hurt their sentiments or feelings. I work towards maintaining a sense of balance. I have cultivated the habit of absorbing the nuances, beats, lyrics, subtleties and styles of singers, music directors, etc. This has helped me a lot. As a professional RJ, I am always ready to take mistakes in my stride and, whenever possible, cover it up in my style quickly. I may change the topic, take a break, or play a different song.

What other things do you do to make your shows peppy, bubbly and animated?

Presence of mind, spontaneity, clarity of diction, clear understanding of various dialects, the ability to connect any issue with any topic, and, above all, a terrific sense of humor. The last mentioned quality is essential because most listeners may be tired with the day's work and all they want is a little respite from their worries. Therefore, RJs should not commit silly errors or ask stupid questions.

I use funny and funky terms like say 'dingchik,' which actually has no meaning. But, audiences instantly know it as a term that can come only from Gowthami. This is

how I establish brand recall. Don't you think I am smart? Aside from radio jockeying, do you do anything else to showcase your talents? I have given my voice for dubbing 75 movies till date-all in Telugu. I have anchored quite a few shows outside. I have done two talk shows with celebrities. I have had longdistance telephonic interviews with celebrities. What is your ambition? To be No.1 and I slug it out to scale the ladder of success. What do you do in your free time? I surf the net, connect with friends, and spend lots of time with my super mom, who is my greatest inspiration. I admire her energy levels. She never tires of learning new things. Perhaps, this trait in me comes from her. I play with my dog whenever I find time. „

What kind of music do you like to dole out for your fans?

What's the profile of your target audiences? What kind of requests do you get from avid listeners as far as songs are concerned? I deal with audiences aged 25-45. They clamor for mass masala Telugu songs, mostly hero-oriented songs. Given the reach of FM, how would you rate Hyderabad? Hyderabad is more of an RJ-driven city than a music-centric one. I have thousands of fans who know me as Gadusu Pilla. I chose this description myself and started using it during my shows. The name stuck. What does your originality hinge on? My originality depends solely on perspective. While on air, I can confidently and assertively handle any kind of issue, topic, view or opinion with poise, ĂŠlan, ease and etiquette. I know where to draw the line if some fans go overboard or cross the limits. What do you believe in? Success begets success. We must always bear in mind that our own resolution to succeed is more important than anything else. What makes your shows extraordinary? I observe a lot, study and absorb what people go through. I gain knowledge of their situations, follow trends, address issues, and catch up with news. I closely follow what good anchors do in news channels. This gives me a perspective. These exercises
