The spirit we cherish As a Hyderabadi, I always feel proud of the cosmopolitan nature of our city. I love every nook and corner of the city, which has been recording phenomenal growth of late. Every facet of this development gives me a lot of josh. It is heartening to see that the city is truly a microcosm of India. People from almost all religions have made the city their home. This spirit of oneness finds fullest expression during festivals. Our traditions and customs give us a feast for the eyes during festivals. In the last couple of months, we celebrated Vinayak Chathurthi, Ramzan, Dasera and Diwali. The city was bedecked in festive colors with gaiety all over. In particular, Dandiya Raas made an impact. We present you vignettes of the great dance form. The recent Air Show enthralled Hyderabadis, with many types of aircraft participating in a spectacular display of aerobatics. We have a story on it. Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. A shrewd cameraman can make ugly things look beautiful. Similarly, nudity can be shown in artistic forms. Ace photographer Rajan Babu knows it best. This issue features him in proper 'light,' considering use of light is his forte. Whenever we talk about theatre in Hyderabad, Ali Baig's name crops up first. He brought glory to Hyderabad theatre. His story is recaptured in this issue. Besides, we have many more interesting articles and photographs. Happy reading!

Glimpses

Stars then and now

U

nlike NTR, ANR, Krishna, Sobhanbabu and Krishnamraju, today's stars are not working hard round the year. The seniors witnessed more than ten releases per year, but our young stars are not having even one or two in a year. Following the release of 'Athidhi' a year ago, Mahesh Babu didn't even start his fresh one. He says that he has to rest. The real reason seems to be lack of stories and concepts. Young heroes are short of new and novel themes. That apart, they don't easily find dedicated heroines. If good scripts are ready, Mahesh Babu is willing to get going. He says he would be ever ready then. He offers to work round the clock if he the script is good.

Luck smiles on Parvathi

L

uck is a precondition for success in the film industry, although good looks and good performance count. Long-legged beauty Parvathi Melton, who was going through a bad patch, got a godsend in the form of a chance to work with Mahesh Babu. Despite her charms and talent, she was having a tough time in Tollywood. But Dame Fortune smiled on her and she was booked as a second heroine in the film Jalsa, after Ileana, the first choice, opted out. Writer-turned-director Trivikram is famous for moulding the characters of heroines in a dignified manner. Parvathi Melton is lucky to have fallen in his hands.

Attitudes

Bubbling with energy:

youth shows the way Today's youths defy description. Hyderabadis are no exception. Call them arrogant, overconfident, supercilious, self-centered, individualistic, eccentric, flighty or hip-hop. Otherwise, use any exalting appellations. In either case, they can’t be slotted if you want the complete picture of what they truly are, and what they are capable of doing and becoming. Hyderabad Josh tries to capture the milieu in which their deep-seated aspirations are allowed to find proper expression.

R

egardless of how you choose to label them, youths in general and those in Hyderabad in particular have values. They are terrific at working with computers. They are brilliant at multitasking. They are very good at working as a team. At the workplace, the rigid hierarchical systems of the past have made way to cohesive teams led by young and energetic leaders. Generation X, broadly identified as those born between 1965 and 1976, grew up in an entirely different world, compared to previous generations. Their traits include independence, resilience and adaptability. Their point is: "I don't need someone looking over my shoulder." Their other traits include working well in multicultural settings, desire for fun at the workplace and a pragmatic approach to getting things done. They also take employability seriously. They are eager to learn new skills because they want to stay employable. The Millennial Generation, normally identified as those born between 1977 and 1998, display a great deal of selfconfidence. They may even appear cocky. Technically

Remain true to your dreams. With discipline and josh, you will have the ultimate freedom to fly and soa literate, they have a profusion of gadgets spilling over into their lives -- computers, Internet, Ipods, cell phones and text pagers. Typically team-oriented, they band together to date and socialize, rather than pair off. They prefer to work in groups, instead of making individual efforts. They're good multitaskers, having juggled sports, school and social interests as children. It is not wrong to expect them to work hard. They appear to expect structure in the workplace. They acknowledge and respect positions and titles. They may want a relationship with their boss. This is at variance with Generation X's love of independence and hands-off style.

Younger and younger entrepreneurs are active while their companies are getting bigger and bigger. Globalization and consumerism do not deter them. Instead, brands define and give a sense of belonging, identity, status and their place in society. To help them achieve this kind of identity, devices and their uses displace the real and the virtual, creating a world where you can be who you want to be. Joining the digital march

antisocial. The MTV generation certainly conforms to the eclectic, free, assorted and rapidly evolving tastes and trends of this generation. Healthy tie-ups between leading-edge firms and universities have heralded the days of adjunct professors, guest lectures, thesis supervision, internships for students, sabbaticals for faculty and workplace experiences for scholars of all ages. This

Studies suggest that student achievement is rising exponentially. Today's youth dedicate more hours to studies and extracurricular activities, compared to their counterparts in previous generations. Millennials or Gen Y get work experience early on. They are flexible and are willing to relocate. They are open-minded. This generation has grown up feeling that the world has big problems. Although Millennials expect good material benefits, they expect self-fulfillment and rewarding relationships. Millennials also expect harmony in their work and personal lives. The younger generation has a more polycentric conception of existence. Work is still extremely important in their life, but they are not willing to sacrifice or compromise on other equally important things. Perhaps due to the influence of technology, they perceive work and life as seamlessly entwined. They want to stay in touch with friends and family from work, work from home, and have flexible hours.

isn't just a personal choice. In order to play a part in youth society, it is imperative to be switched on, charged up, and stay connected. The mobile phone has become an integral and indispensable part of a adult's everyday life. Ring tones are a badge of identity as much as the clothes they wear. Text and picture messaging is the way to spread the word of their bold new cultural identity.

technological advantage and unprecedented knowledge explosion has pushed the competitive spirit among the youth to its extreme limits.

Millennials' outspokenness and their tendency to communicate electronically, paired with a certain obliviousness to office etiquette, is perceived by older superiors as a sign disrespect. The older generation feels that Millennials want to break the rules.

From discovering new bands on social networking sites to texting music downloads, the supposedly alienated, 'antisocial youth' of the 21st century are forming a world wide web of cultural critique that cannot be ignored. It is not clear why today's youths are tagged as

In light of the foregoing factors, the clarion call one can make to Hyderabadi youths is: Remain true to your dreams. With discipline and josh, you will have the ultimate freedom to fly and soar. Remember, you are in India's most happening city.

We see a whole new bunch of tech-savvy, spirited entrepreneurs who are barely in their twenties. This was unthinkable a couple of generations ago.

Flying Colors

Aerial Choreography Aerobatics

Y.S. Rajashekara Reddy and Robert Vadra enjoying

Hyderabad's old Begumpet airport saw the Indian Air Force's Surya Kiran team take aerial choreography to new heights during the recent four-day India Aviation 2008 show.It was the first ever civilian aviation exhibition, which initiated the process for global partnerships and alliances for the Indian aviation sector.

he makers of Boeing, Airbus, Cessna, Bell Helicopter, Hindustan Aeronautics, ATR and Bombardier, among others, and participants from 17 countries displayed nearly 40 aircraft. The Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce & Industries and the Civil Aviation Ministry were principal organizers of the show. Rare photographs covering the evolution of Indian civil aviation since 1932 were on display.

T

Formation Aerobatics is a vital part of the IAF. The roots of Display Formation flying can be traced to the mid-60s when four Mysteres used to crowd over Delhi on the Republic Day. Later, nine Hunter aircraft, introduced during the Golden Jubilee of the IAF, performed feats in the air as 'Thunderbolts.' After the phase-out of the Hunters, the indigenously manufactured Kiran MK IIs were tasked to stay in formation. In 1966, the team was christened 'Surya Kiran.'

Captain Jean-Michel Roy, who captained an A 380 from Toulouse to Hyderabad, did a perfect two-point landing. The emergence of the Tricolor, as the aircraft taxied towards the apron, put patriotic josh in all spectators. After the ceremonial water gun salute by two fire engines, Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel, accompanied by Airbus officials, met the crew led by Captain Roy and John Leahy, Chief Executive Officer (Customers).

Maintaining position requires excellent reflexes, anticipation and tremendous determination. It was a breath-taking sight to watch the aircraft in close formation, manoeuvering between speeds of 150 and 650 kmph, with their wing tips a mere five metres apart. The pilots' 1520 minutes of aerial choreography comes with tremendous amount of practice. All of these hair-raising manoeuvres require total concentration, grit and determination.

The bigwigs present at the India Aviation 2008 included Kingfisher Airlines' Vijay Mallya, Jet Airways' Naresh Goel and President and CEO of Bell Helicopter Richard J Millman.

The team, which has enthralled crowds from Srinagar down to Trivandrum and even beyond to Sri Lanka, is capable of performing romantic formation with an arrow passing through a heart carved out by a synchronized pair.

On the concluding day, there was a rich fare for the general public, including fly-past by the IAF as well as parasailing, parajumping and hot air ballooning by the Aero Club of India. The Surya Kiran team's fly-past and display formation over the Begumpet airport, initially with nine aircraft and later with six aircraft, was extraordinary. The manoeuvres included roll and loop as well as pullout of the Tricolor in the sky. All eyes were riveted on the skies watching the precise movements and perfect coordination among the pilots.

Excitement pervaded the airport during the touchdown of the Airbus 319 belonging to Air India, sorties of the IL 114 from Uzebekistan and the hovering of EC 135 helicopter close to the railing beside spectators.

Palliatives

Herbal remedies & home-made medicines have been used for ages. For home remedies, people rely largely on natural ingredients such as fruits, vegetables and herbs. Our ancestors were far healthier than most of us, perhaps because they popped fewer pills and relied on their grandmas’ solutions to common ailments. We all love our grandma, but few take seriously the home remedies she rightly prescribes for simple ailments. 14

NOVEMBER 2008

ome remedies, though not a substitute for medical attention, can address some of the common ailments. They are demonstrably effective in the treatment of sprains, minor lacerations, headaches, fevers and the common cold.

H

Doctors believe that people who strengthen their immune system can see a cold season pass without a sniffle, regardless of whether they take germpacked autos, fly in airplanes or squeeze themselves in jam-packed trains and buses. Likewise, they can studiously avoid stomach bugs too.

Home remedies are less expensive and less harmful, compared to other forms of modern medicines. They often provide substantial relief from everyday ailments that otherwise cause discomfort. It is a different matter that sometimes what appears to be a small “illness could in fact be a symptom of something serious that needs detailed investigations and prolonged treatment. The best part is that home remedies rarely cause reactions and they have no side effects. On top of that, you have the satisfaction of having cured yourself.

All those who work in crowded places, whether young or old, can definitely stay clear of all major bugs. The secret lies in having a massage, which works like medicine. Studies suggest that massage can reduce anxiety, decrease blood pressure and stabilize the heart rate. Lowering these levels is essential for building up immunity. Kneading by the therapist should be vigorous enough to move or indent skin, but not so hard as to cause pain. Normally, massage once or twice every month should do. If you can take matters into your own hands, nothing

like it! Try a moderate-pressure massage, as it stimulates pressure receptors under the skin. Chicken soup is quite often used to treat respiratory infections such as a cold or mild flu. Willow bark tea is used to tackle headaches and fevers.

Studies suggest that vitamin C is especially helpful for highly stressed people and that zinc can prevent viruses from multiplying.

A cold shower helps those with low energy, migraines or circulatory problems. You can fight fatigue with a 10-minute cold shower. Have two or three showers a day and then opt for a one-minute hot bath. Do consult your doctor if you have cardiovascular problems, because exposing your body to sudden chill could cause a spike in blood pressure. Slip a few slices of peeled fresh ginger into a mug of hot water for five minutes and add honey. You can consume it and see the results in about three hours, without the diarrhea that many conventional laxatives cause. Ginger has been used for centuries. It is believed that certain compounds in ginger stimulate digestive secretions, improve intestinal muscle tone, and help move food through the gastrointestinal tract. Even during pregnancy it is quite safe to take ginger in small doses (less than 1,000 milligrams) for a short period. You can ward off morning sickness too. In India, it is common to add ginger to tea. Pieces of ginger are soaked in lime juice and eaten. Ginger, whether powdered, dried

If you want to remain healthy all your life, make a ritual of eating cloves of garlic. Garlic is rich in antioxidants that help boost immunity and fight inflammation. That means the herb, in addition to boosting defenses against everyday illness, probably helps to stave off cancer and boost heart health. If you’re worried about bad breath and yucky burps, you’re not alone. Those side effects aren’t unusual. Experts warn that garlic could cause gas and acid reflux in some people. Still, up to two cloves per day is considered safe for most people.

or cooked, works miracles. It is important to wash your hands thoroughly if you go to the toilet and whenever your hands are soiled for any reason so much so that people say, “Health is in your hands.” Wash with regular soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. Vigorously scrub all parts of your hands. Particularly, you need to look for

The best way to remain healthy is to autosuggest: “I am perfectly healthy. I can never be sick.” It pays to maintain that kind of a positive attitude. In case you don’t always think positive, you should learn at least to be less negative. Don’t ever dwell on the symptoms when you are sick. Always focus on your strengths and how you feel when you use them. Slowly, but surely you’ll recognize that positive feelings are far more rewarding (and curative) than negative feelings.

Behind the screen

QADIR ALI BAIG THEATRE FOUNDATION

Thespian Prithviraj Kapoor once told the senior Baig, then a young man: " The future of Hindustani theatre is safe in your hands." The words proved prophetic, considering the founding of the Qadir Ali Baig Theatre Foundation in 2005 by the proud son of an illustrious father. 16

NOVEMBER 2008

M

ohammed Ali Baig, along with his mother, Begum Razia Baig, and some well-wishers, including Lakshmi Raj and M.S.Sathyu, shaped the foundation as a tribute to his legendary father Mirza Qadir Ali Baig and to foster theatre of good quality in Hyderabad. The single-handed contribution that Qadir Ali made to theatre within a very short time is incredible. He plumbed histories of theatre and drama to provide global perspectives that enhanced understanding of human expressions.

to rehearsals and preparations for staging plays. A perfectionist to the core, he would not tolerate any slipshod work on stage by his fellow actors, stage technicians or backstage staff. He took some of his very successful plays to Delhi and Mumbai, where they were very well-received and won him many awards. He was also responsible for broadcasting weekly radio plays that became very popular. He blazed a trail in making teleplays for Doordarshan back when black and white television had its heydey. They include 'Raksha Bandhan', 'Aasra' and 'Humayun'.

Qadir Ali Baig had a stentorian voice, a commanding stage presence and a great stature that contributed to the unrivalled success of his plays. His histrionics and his perspicacious understanding of theatre underpinned the excellence of his productions. He was the embodiment of tehzeeb-otamaddun of Hyderabad.

Qadir Ali Baig used his skills to the hilt to enrich the English stage in Hyderabad. He acted in Bertolt Brecht's 'Mother Courage' directed by Gaby Sewitz of the Max Muller Bhavan, the IndoGerman cultural organization in Hyderabad. He wrote five plays in Urdu that have been published in a book titled "Resham ki Dor". These plays highlight the importance of national integration and deal with the sacrifices of religious communities in favor of one another. Some of the

events depicted in the works transcend religious barriers and emphasize human values that stand out in religious texts. An out-and-out theatre person, Qadir provided inspiration and the wherewithal to what came to be known as 'Renaissance of Hindustani theatre' in Hyderabad (1965-1984). He used to don the roles of an actor, producer, director and playwright. He elevated drama to great heights. As filmmaker and theatre personality M. S. Sathyu says: "When theatre in Hyderabad was bogged down by clichĂŠs both in form and content, substance and decorum, the Qadir Ali Baig wave made history in Deccan." Young Qadir was brought up by his aristocratic father, legendary polo player Mirza Mahmood Ali Baig to become a polo player and a horse breeder. He excelled at horse racing and polo, but was somehow irresistibly drawn to stage. He completed his formal education away from home at the prestigious Aligarh Muslim University and did so well at his graduation level that his father rewarded him with a sleek Jaguar, the ultimate in sports cars at that time.

AGAINST ODDS The circumstances surrounding theatre in Hyderabad then were interesting. Most of the Hyderabadis were Urdu-speaking, not with standing the large number of migrants from other parts of Andhra (following the reorganization of States in 1956). Twelve years prior to Independence, the famous play wright Agha Hashr Kashmiri's Urdu-oriented plays were copiously produced by the Parsi theatre. This theatre activity was relegated by black and white film producers and soon theatrical performances all over India became a culture of the past. Subsequently, there was a vacuum in theatre activity and rarely plays in any language were enacted until organizations like NSD and others took over. At that point of time, there were some privately organized forums in the city like the DCH, Marathi Gandhalaya and some Telugu associations that staged plays once a while and that too in languages other than Hindustani. Amidst all this, Baig took the entire responsibility of reviving theatre on his shoulders. Within just 20 years, he transformed Hindustani Theatre in Hyderabad. Qadir Ali staged 46 plays, most of which were acclaimed by

Anticlock wise : 1. Naseeruddin Shah in one of Mohammed Qadir Ali Baig’s play 2. Late Mohammed Qadir Ali Baig 3. Mohammed Qadir Ali in action critics. It was on the June 3rd, 1984 that the city's art, theatre and literary circles woke up to the terrible news of the demise of the genius Mir Qadir Ali Baig when he was just 46. Today, the line-up of artistes presented thorough the decades in various shows and dramas seems an apposite and fitting response to Qadir Ali Baig Theatre Foundation's quest for culture. Its shows model the various combinations of history, ethnicity and interartistic as well as cross-cultural milieus through which the nation expresses. NOVEMBER 2008

At a very young age, Mohammad Ali Baig started directing stalwarts like Shabana Azmi, Girish Karnad, Jackie Shroff, Saif Ali Khan, Mallika Sarabhai and others. Before turning 30, he had produced 300-plus adfilms for some of the topmost global brands and Fortune 500 companies across seven cities in five countries. He became the youngest director on board India's pioneering public limited video production company in Bangalore. While carrying on his father's legacy, he has given Hyderabad's theatre a new dimension with productions like 'Taramati'-A Legend of an Artist, 'His Exalted Highness,' 'Reading Between The Lines' and 'Raat Phoolon Ki' and has brought to the city some of the best theatre works from across the country. His movement has helped revitalize theatre in Hyderabad and has aroused deep interest in the city's culture. His focus on 'Heritage Theatre' is also a sensation. He Vani Ganapathy, Mohammed Ali Baig in a play is being referred to as 'The Poster Boy of Hyderabad Theatre' and 'The New-Age Theatre Revivalist'. He has pioneered a series of live theatre conversations on stage titled 'Celebrating Theatre'. His recent production 'Raat Phoolon Ki,' which he wrote and directed, featuring himself with Arif Zakaria and santoor maestro Rahul Sharma, recently got international acclaim. They have been invited to perform at the World Festival of Performing Arts. Mohammad Ali Baig has produced and directed over 300 advertising and marketing films for leading Indian and foreign brands in India, Bangkok, Egypt, Poland and Romania. His ad-films, short films and social documentaries have been telecast around the world-- from Doordarshan in India to BBC, Discovery Channel, CNN, and Moscow Television abroad. He has won 12 advertising awards, two national honors and two international awards, including 'The Golden Asters' at the Osaka Film Festival in Japan. He has also

won the Indira Gandhi Award for Young Achievers in the field of Visual Communications. Until recently, he was a director on board Odyssey Video, along with luminaries like Shekhar Kapur, Shyam Benegal and Girish Karnad. He primed films for numerous global brands and corporate videos for leading MNCs. He has been associated with the making of films for international firms like Pembinaan Redzai in Malaysia, M&G in Hong Kong, World Bank, USAID and UN projects. Now, as producer and director of CineWorks India -- a company he started after his seven-year association with Odyssey-- he is much sought after by MNCs, advertising agencies, Indian corporate houses and ministries looking for richness in their visual communications, promotional and ad-films. His company has a talent pool comprising internationally acclaimed film professionals and technicians who produce TV commercials on par with the best in the global industry.

LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON Mohammad Ali Baig is a second generation scion of the theatre-loving family. Creativity seems to run in the family. As an adfilm maker, he has produced India's biggest adfilm; and, as a documentary film maker, he has won the highly acclaimed global award for his heritage film. As a theatre director, he has made south India's biggest original musical production in Hindustani. 18

The "BMW Xpo," launched in October 2008 across the company's dealer network, provided prospective buyers of premium cars a rare chance to know inside out the complete range of luxurious BMWs, which have come to symbolize the high point of pure driving pleasure. n terms of riding comfort, speed, grace, look, upholstery and colors, there is hardly any car that comes close to BMWs. The best part of the BMW Xpo was that the swanky cars were on offer on attractive terms, including "zero down payment" option for select customers, low interest rate of 15% from ICICI Bank and a special 30% discount on a basic insurance policy from Bajaj Allianz.

Waqt ke keemat

K

atrina Kaif is becoming a workaholic! We hear the actress has made it clear that she does not like to “waste” time between shoots on the sets. So imagine how Kats would have felt when Raj Kumar Santoshi was compelled to scrap a day’s shooting recently. Unit members reveal, “The incident occurred on the sets of Ajab Pyar Ki Ghazab Kahani. It was raining cats and dogs that day and Santoshi had no choice but to cancel the shooting of the film for the day. While the lead star Ranbir Kapoor and the entire unit rejoiced at the thought of having an entire day off, Katrina was not in her elements. “A day off is such a waste of time,” she kept carping. Katrina, who thinks she knows waqt ke keemat better, kept wishing the rain away, lekin the Rain God was on duty.

‘Vidya’ for Balan

A

ctress Vidya Balan is quite excited these days. She is packing her bags for Wai, where she’ll shoot for Vishal Bharadwaj’s ‘Ishqiya’. Aside from the fact that it is going to be Bharadwaj directing her, Vidya is mightily pleased at the opportunity of sharing screen space with Naseeruddin Shah. “It’s going to be sooooo much fun! A great learning experience too,” she says elatedly. “We’ve attended workshops for our roles in the film. The workshops were conducted by none other than Naseeruddin Shah. They were so good,” Vidya exclaims. Well, let’s see how the connections work this time round. Who knows what ‘kismet’ is in store for her in this film?

"Was there life before coffee?" This rhetorical question may jolly well be the one at the back of the mind of coffee lovers frequenting any of the trendy coffee shops that have proliferated in Hyderabad. The reason is that in the emerging world of specialty coffee, there is no such thing as just a cup of coffee. It comes bundled with books, music, snacks, jukeboxes and what not. Hyderabad Josh gets the wind of what's wafting through swanky coffeehouses along with the aroma of coffee. 26

NOVEMBER 2008

he South Indian filter coffee may have countless fans. Yet, the newest bedecked coffeehouses in the city like Barista, Café Coffee Day and Odyssey have exotic brews that seem to better rev up our mornings, afternoons and evenings. India has a rich café culture. In the past, the units of Indian Coffee House heralded the golden age of coffee houses in the country. The new generation of Indians took to cola and soft drinks in a big way. The wheel has turned a full circle. We now see coffee shops and cafes springing up everywhere to pander to the taste buds of every coffee lover.

Many reputed businessmen frequent the café. It's a hot and happening spot for celebrities who have a good time on special occasions. A lot of film shoots take place here, apart from regular events like playing light music, strumming guitar etc.

One noticeable aspect of the sweeping changes taking place in the country is the studied focus on the art and craft of coffee selection, roasting, brewing and presentation. The new breed of coffee houses have become meeting points for coffee connoisseurs as well as the twenty-plus crowd that just wants to chat. Coffee bars capture the ebullient and frothy spirit of today's youngsters.

At Odyssey, Sajid, the manager, points out enthusiastically that film stars like Allu Arjun, Raja, Anushka, ‘Happy Days’ Director Shekar Kammula, Nithin, Aarthi, Veda and other celebrities are very often spotted here. It is just a coincidence that they prefer Hot Coffee, Caramel, Chocolate Coffee as well as Coffee with Orange, Pineapple and Strawberry flavors.

Raghu, a Senior Manager at Barista, says that most of the youngsters have taken particular liking for Cool Coffee, Chocolate Coffee, Hot Coffee and Cappuccino.

Barista presents a luscious, mouth-watering, scrumptious and delectable menu of the café's hottest current selections: Tres Santos Dota Co-op, Mocha, Colombian; Mandheling Padang, Sumatra, Indonesia and several more "single origin" beans, which would be ground to order and then custom-brewed by the cup in a special machine.

These coffee chains with plans for a countrywide presence have one thing in common: they target the young crowd. Therefore, we are witnessing the evolution of trendy coffee bars. They are elevating

coffee from the caffeine delivery mode to a soothing culinary experience (see box).

In the new generation of independent coffee houses, the typical coffee lover is not just a fast-food worker. They care about all the links in the chain, starting with the farmer who grows the coffee trees. Yes, they can talk to you knowledgably about all of those links. The patrons of today's specialty coffee are more informed than their predecessors. Twenty years ago, specialty coffee was in its infancy. Today, with blogs on the net, industry trade shows, competitions and regional roaster trainings, education is passed on from industry professional to industry professional with ease. Most of them are willing to share their knowledge. Luckily for those whose vocabularies don't yet include terms like "dosing" and "portafilter"-or for those who may need help discerning between a Tres Santos Dota Coop and a Mandheling Padang bean-this new crop of coffee lovers are eager to share their knowledge with customers too. As a source of recreation, these coffeehouses provide a platform for people of similar tastes to congregate, smoke, read the papers, browse through magazines, skim through books, gossip, and discuss business over a cup of coffee. The best part is that there are munchies as well. So, why are you waiting? Go there and have your cuppa now!

Coffee in India

T

amilnadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh account for about 80% of coffee consumption in India. India's per capita daily coffee consumption is 54 grams, mainly because of the southern region's per capita level of 240 grams. Still, coffee consumption has increased from 55,000 tons to 80,000 tons in the past few years. The Union Commerce Ministry is implementing a plan to increase domestic coffee consumption to 1.6 million tons by 2016. Coffeehouses and parlors are finding it lucrative to accentuate outlet-oriented book clubs, film clubs, social activities, merchandise and food.

census, about half the country's population is estimated to be less than 21 years old. The "cafe culture" that is spreading across metropolitan India is attributed mainly to the BPO boom and the resultant increase in youth spending power.

Across India, the organized coffee retail business is flourishing largely due to rising disposable incomes of youth and a booming fast-food sector, which is growing at 40% annually. Industry sources say the niche coffee retail format is growing at 10-12% per year, with branded coffee accounting for 53% of sales, unbranded 40% and cafes 7%.

In keeping with the global coffee culture, purveyors in India offer the "total experience"-a wide range of blends, snacks, soothing ambience, satellite-based and wi-fi-enabled environment and jukeboxes.

Currently there are over 1,000 cafe outlets in the organized sector. Bangalorebased Cafe Coffee Day is known for providing a hip and trendy ambience. Delhi-based Barista Coffee wants to "catch them young" and induce "lifetime loyalty".

Coffee became quite popular in the late 1990s, following the emergence of coffee chains. There was a transition from the conventional 'coffee house' to a trendy 'coffee bar.' The café market in India is believed to be maturing so much so that a time would come when the café will eventually become a community hub, exclusively serving say pop music lovers, intellectuals, communists and other groups.

Media reports suggest that the typical consumer prefers a paneer roll or tangy chicken pasta even in coffee chains. Unlike in the West, where beverages account for 80% of total sales of coffee retail chains; in India food accounts for up to 40% of overall sales, while coffee, beverages and ice creams together account for 60%. In some of the cafes, soft drink concoctions and other beverages mingle with snacks and minimeals. - Padma Akella

Fresh & Honest Café has been focusing on the vending business, specifically on office coffee service. The grand old Indian Coffee House in Kerala is basically a restaurant chain. Nestle India, Qwiky's and Cafe Mocha are some of the other players. Media reports suggest that an increasing number of young urban Indians favor coffee shops for socializing. Unwinding

The sensation of the right kind of touch works wonders on us inside out, more so if it is from a mother, when you are a kid; a lover, when you are a youth; and a toddler, when you are in your sunset years. For relaxation and for easing stress in the midst of hectic work schedules, periodically you need something that approximates such a transformative touch. Typically a spa offers services that give you the nearest such sensation, albeit at a price. 28

NOVEMBER 2008

A

t the mention of the word “spa, the uninitiated conjure up images of long days filled with mud baths, meditation sessions and calorie-counted delicacies that may be served amidst soothing verdure. The pursuit of a beautifully sculpted body and a well-lighted mind has never been so unapologetic, unrepentant and unreformed. Imagine a two-hour spoiler of a massage that smoothes your skin with a mix of exotic flowers and spices. Follow that up by soaking in a tub filled with fragrant flowers for another hour. It will evoke images of royalty, taking you to a realm that is way beyond the reach of ordinary mortals. There are some who feel guilty about getting a massage! Others may feel that getting a massage signifies that one is too selfindulgent. Actually, a massage has significant health benefits. A massage helps you in physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.

Benefits of a massage * Calms the nervous system and promotes a sense of relaxation and well-being. * Reduces tension and anxiety. * Improves blood circulation, properly delivering oxygen and nutrients to cells. * Stimulates the lymphatic system. * Helps carry away the body's waste products. * Prevents and relieves muscle cramps and spasms. * Helps in pain management for people with chronic problems like arthritis, sciatica, muscle spasms etc.

However, you should avoid a massage if you have fever, infection, inflammation, osteoporosis and certain chronic medical conditions. In case you have concerns over whether a massage is OK for you because of a pre-existing medical condition, it is better to consult a trained massage therapist. Spas are mushrooming in the twin cities. In fact, we see them every where: office buildings, strip malls, village storefronts and the like. Salons with one tiny massage table tout their “exclusive spa services.” We also have tiny enclosures that attend to nail and have the cheek to call themselves “full-fledged” spas. It takes time to become an easygoing and discerning spa visitor. The maiden visit to a spa could be a daunting experience for anyone. Behind the polished doors of the spa lies a space that is classy and inviting. But, you may enter it with trepidation that you are prone to commit some faux pas or the other. It pays to unwind in a spa. When, where and how we relax depends largely on our stress levels. If you are a software professional neck-deep on a 24/7 project, you need to relax quite often. Otherwise, you may compromise your health by aligning yourself to an unremitting, un-compromising and hard-hitting work schedules. There are different types of spas (see box). At a day spa, you drop in for massage, facials and body treatments. Day spas are often extensions of hair salons. It is OK as long as such spas have separate wings located in a serene environment. At the Celebrity City Centre in Begumpet, Fitbuzz has made a mark as a holistic wellness center for the

body, mind and soul. It specializes in strength training, cardio training and aerobics. Fitness studio Dinaz's offers a variety of programs, ranging from Cardio-Endurance for strengthening the cardio-vascular system to NiftyFifty for people who are fifty and above. It has programs tailor-made for the corporate sector and offers customized training programs for individuals. Centrally located, Fitness World offers cardiovascular, body toning, strength and resistance training. It also has a health bar and a spa. The gym is open from 5.30 am to 9.30 pm on weekdays and from 5.30 am to 12 noon on Sundays. VLCC offers weight loss and therapeutic beauty solutions. In almost all such spas, you may feel pampered with an array of exotic cocktail massages and regular rejuvenating massages, call it ayurvedic, Thai or whatever. Some have a solarium, sauna and bath facilities that transport you to Rome. The basic spa treatments include massage, facial, body treatment, manicure and pedicure. A massage will help you relax and get rid of excess tension in the muscle. A facial is a deep cleansing of your face. A body treatment exfoliates and softens the skin on your body. Most midsize and large spas offer manicures and pedicures. You can also combine services, say a massage and a body treatment for reaping double benefits. If you want to be stroked deep down, check out the best spa in your neighborhood and enjoy yourself.

Pick your spa In any spa, overall well-being is enhanced through a slew of professional services that help in the renewal of mind, body and spirit. If you’re looking for a real getaway that includes lodging and related amenities, go for a cruise ship, hotel, resort or destination spa. Otherwise, a day spa will do if you need just a facial or a particular service. Club spa specializes in fitness-related regimen and offers professional services on a day-use basis. Spa aboard a cruise ship provides professional services, fitness and wellness components as well as spa cuisine menu choices. Cosmetic spa offers aesthetic/cosmetic and prevention/wellness procedures and services such as facials, peels, waxing and other non-invasive procedures that do not require medical supervision. Day spa offers professional services on a day-use basis. Almost all day spas offer services and procedures available at typical cosmetic spas. Clicking somebody on the road with a cell phone is one thing and capturing something on the camera for posterity in a professional manner is another. Technology may simplify the actual process of clicking, but it cannot create artistic sensibilities that underlie an immortal image. Photography is both an art and a science for thorough professionals. A photographer with an artistic bent of mind makes an amazing combination. Bandi Rajan Babu, who graces the pages of Hyderabad Josh this month, s one whose trend-setting works have wowed artists and photographers the world over. Known for his immaculate handling of nude photography and the creative use of light, Rajan Babu has produced masterpieces that have everlasting appeal.

By Lasya

The man 'clicks' with the times

B

andi Rajan Babu was born on February 9, 1939. He belongs to Koratla village, from where royal families sourced exquisite card covers, envelopes, registers etc in the past. Rajan's works reflect rustic charm in all its dimensions, with the camera zooming in on the speaking details: places where something curious happens to people, spots were people live, points where people talk, lanes where people walk, expanses where people simply sit in silence or lose themselves in thought. Starting his photographic career in the very college where he studied, Rajan has made a mark as an outstanding teacher who emphasizes dimension, angle and perspective. Those tutored by him pay rich encomiums to Rajan's skills as a photographer. They say every work of his is a study in itself. His forte is nude photography. Nude photography and erotic photography find expression in multiple ways, regardless of whether they are labeled as works of artistic freedom, aesthetic appeal, kitsch, junk or provocation. The boundaries of nude photography, erotic photography and pornography are undefined. For most people, a nude photograph is "good" only if it is such that a model can show it around at the coffee table during her grandmother's birthday party and receive positive feedback. Tasteful nude photography requires well-honed skills, technical knowledge and the rare ability to effectively use light as the principal medium of communication. That apart, the photographer has to build a positive relationship with his model. Impelled by an inner force, Rajan Babu left his teaching job to passionately follow his first love: photography. After a series of successful assignments, he launched the Rajan School of Photography in 1978 for training budding photographers. His rationale for such a school: "Photography is like a language. One should know the grammar well to become an expert. " Rajan himself drew inspiration from Raja Triambak Raj Bahadur (the first person from Andhra Pradesh to become an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society, England) and mastered various techniques and understood the nuances of light-induced expression. He has since fused dramatic compositions with telling details in emotionally charged subjects in his works to give viewers an intensely personal experience. Some of the methods he developed have become models in art circles as well as industrial and fashion photography. Steeped in the art of photography, he is one person who has not taken the medium 'lightly.' Through his photographs, he paints emotions in multiple forms of light: candle, fire or a starlit sky. His fascination for the human body and forms can be better understood through his depiction of the beauty of tribals. He loves to experiment with human figures. In a way, he is a picture perfect artist.

I come from Koratla, a village (in Karim nagar) world-renowned for weaving techniques and brightly colored weaves. Forgetting one's roots is like stopping to breathe. I am glad that today, as I stand in front of my home, I can see serenity and peace in the soil here and in the hearts and homes of the people living here. Who or what inspired you to get into photography? I give full credit to my Guruji venerated Raja Triambak Raj Bahadur and all those who have helped me all these years. Initially, you were into painting. Your paintings are evocative, showing light in various forms. Do you experiment a lot with light? We need to point the best features towards the camera. They are round and have feminine grace. The grace of human body can be highlighted with light from above. Reflectors are necessary to enhance or emphasize shapes of the body. Were there any inhibitions during nude photography? In general, people have protested. But, an artist should not worry about having to face embarrassing situations. Where do you shoot nudes? Artists have to be respected for their work. I am very specific about the locales and the time of the day to get the best results. Do models offer their full support in your photographic endeavors? Yes. They lend support with the help of their parents. Do you think photography as an art is getting its due in India? Of course! Look, we have the best breed of talent showcasing their works in India and globally. It has been quite an exhilarating experience for me personally. We see art and photography schools popping up everywhere. We understand that you researched photography extensively before becoming a full-fledged photographer. How has it helped you? Any good artist must continuously explore the best possibilities so that his or her works leave an indelible imprint on the viewers' mind. For example, take the case of 'Araku tribes.' They have the most poignant aura about them and can present us with outstanding pictorial reproduction of life that is centered on scintillating beauty of pristine landscapes, beautiful people, rustic innocence, elusive culture, traditions and lifestyles.

Miles to go : Award winning picture Why this fascination with Araku? Araku is a paradise for artists and poets alike (Of his many works, the documentation of 'Araku Tribes' is outstanding and has earned him rave reviews). Your career spans nearly 50 years with a multiplicity of awards, accomplishments, recognition and honors. How does it feel now? "I feel humbled. I am a little disheartened because I have not received full credit for my work. Anyway, I leave it to the best discretion of art critics and patrons. You have conducted several oneman shows. Which ones have made an impact? I have conducted many shows. I prefer to experiment with the human body, not for its physical beauty, but for the supernatural eloquence about them. Where do you want to go from here? I am just a clump of clay. The potter has to mould me (smiles). What is your advice to budding photographers or upcoming professionals among our readers? In order to become a successful photographer, one must have a thorough understanding of people

and places. Study light from various angles. If you can master light, you can produce miracles.

Rajan’s deft use of light

What kind of books do you read? I read very little considering my age. But, when it comes to a project or an assignment, I never compromise on study and research. How do you envisage the future of Indian theatre? I see a spectacular future. But, the current crop of artistes should explore more, experiment more and experience more. Every object is a place of worship. Only with such an attitude you can dip your brush or turn on your camera for action. Are you a foodie? Where do you prefer to go while eating out? I relish good food, whether prepared at home or outside. Considering my age, I am a little cautious.

-Lasya

Any artist is a receptacle for emotions that could come from anywhere: the sky, earth, a scrap of paper, bird's wings, gurgle of streams, passing shape or a spider's web. Seasoned Rajan Babu too is prone to surprise us time and again.

Glimpses Nagarjuna on triple track

N

agarjuna is now enacting a character that has three shades. In the film 'King,' he plays a young entrepreneur, a credit card agent and a local dada. Doing such a three-in-one role is a very rare opportunity for any actor. That's one reason why Nagarjuna promptly accepted the role in 'King,' which is being directed by Srinu Vaitla and produced by Siva Prasad Reddy. The highprofile romantic entertainer is slated for release on December 18th, much to the liking of Nagarjuna. Sentiments apart, expectations are very high because of the strength of the character 'King'. King may click at the box office for sure.

Avuncular impact

P

rabhas is happy because his dream to act with his uncle (Peda Nana garu -Krishnamraju) will come true. "I am going to see myself along with Peda nana in 'Billa," exults 'Young rebel star' Prabhas. His uncle is his idol. " W h a t I am today is only because of Krishnam Raju garu. Working with such a towering personality is a matter of pride to me." Despite some setbacks, Prabhas is optimistic in his thinking. He is concerned about the script and the character he plays. "I am not particular about the results. I don't show any kind of interest in other things." As for heroines, his favorite is Trisha, who brings him "luck" and he likes to work with Shreya.

The President is Coming, written by Anuvab Pal and directed by Kunaal Roy Kapur, is a satire on American politics woven with the fallibilities and idiosyncrasies of typical Indian middle class people. In March 2006, President Bush made a four-day visit to India. In the comedy based on this visit, the President is desirous of meeting

some of the young faces responsible for shaping "the new India". The play explores the dog-eat-dog world of competition, reality television and short-lived fame. It shows how six ambitious Indians will stop at nothing in light of the President's impending visit. The Suit, adapted from a short story by Can Themba from S.A and directed by Neelam Mansingh Chowdhry, is a gripping tale of intense love and infidelity. It highlights a young married couple's moral dilemma. Bunty (a caring husband) discovers Minna (his wife) with her lover. He forces her to keep the man's discarded suit and to treat it as an honored guest. The strange punishment triggers the free-spirited but repressed wife's mental destruction - a metaphor for the insidious emotional abuse of apartheid that plagued South Africa. The husband's mental agony is deftly contrasted with his wife's contrition. Doubles, Triples and Quadruples, directed by Sunil Vishnu K. and Karthik Kumar, is a medley of monologues and short sketches. It tries to capture life's moments in all shapes and sizes, evoking laughs, giggles, smiles and

It is not easy to start off with a dream to become a singer and end up with two additional qualifications: an anchor and a dubbing artiste with no parallel. In Tollywood at least, there is no other artiste who has accomplished as much as Sunitha simultaneously in singing, dubbing and anchoring. Multi-faceted Sunitha is referred to as 'Lady Balu' by those who aver that she has it in her to become as versatile as S.P. Balasubramanyam. In a free-wheeling conversation with Hyderabad Josh, Sunitha shares her inmost aspirations and throws light on little known aspects of her professional life.

Laila. Kurra Rangarao, the co-director of the film, was particular that I must dub for Laila. They too removed my voice. Like that wherever I had gone to sing, I was asked to dub instead."

"My dreams came true when I sang for ‘Pelli Pandiri’ directed by Kodi Ramakrishna. In that film, there was a dialogue part along with the song. Having noticed my perfection in the dialogue part, Kodi Ramakrishna asked me to give voice to heroine Raasi. Mind you, Raasi was a very busy and popular dubbing artiste before she became a heroine. But after she became a heroine, I gave her my voice for the first time."

T

hese are some of the melodious masterpieces of versatile Sunitha, who made her debut in Krishna Vamsi's film 'Gulabi.' Over the years, Sunitha has taken melody to great heights in her unending quest for mastering the art of singing. Sunitha has also been lending her sweet voice to many leading heroines of Tollywood. She is among the mostsought-after anchors for music-oriented programs of all popular TV channels. This multi-faceted personality has a special place in the hearts of viewers. "Although I am into singing, dubbing and anchoring, I don't consider them as important to my career. In my view, my career is my 'voice'. After 13 years of non-stop running around, I am happy and contented with what I am today," Sunitha reveals. For her, the journey to becoming a singer in her own right was long and tortuous. The road to her success as a singer was paved with many disappointments. "Actually I came to the tinsel world of cinema to be a singer. Aside from being a singer, today I am busy as a dubbing artiste and as an anchor. It did not happen overnight. I had to struggle," she recalls "When I sang my first song 'Ee velalo em chestu vuntavo' for the film 'Gulabi,' ace director and producer Ramgopal Varma was immensely pleased. He asked me to dub for Urmila in 'Anaganaga Oka Roju'. I was hardly sixteen then. I tried to convince them that I was not the person to lend my voice. I knew that it would be very difficult to deliver dialogues for somebody else, as it involves correct lip sync. But, I was bribed with a box of chocolates and reluctantly I did it. Finally, they removed my voice and got somebody else to do the dubbing, saying my voice was very 'tender.' Naturally, I felt ashamed. I was unhappy, but determined to concentrate only on singing," she looks back with pride in her eyes. "Later, when I sang for the film 'Egire pavurama' directed by S.V. Krishna Reddy, I was required to dub for heroine

High points of Sunitha's life I have received compliments from many great singers, but the one I got from Susheela garu is something I will cherish for forever. For the song ‘Idigidigo naa Ramudu nadayadina punyabhoomi ide’ I did in Ramadas, she said that she could find herself in my voice. I am a mad fan of Maestro Illaya Raja. Among singers, I adore Susheela garu for clarity and sweetness, Janaki garu for expression, Chitra garu for versatility and Balu garu for overall mastery. I have done nearly 1,500 songs, including Telugu, Tamil and Kannada numbers. I wish I could sing for Devulapalli Krishna Sastry garu. I wish to do something remarkable in light music and Janapadalu as well. I had the privilege of giving voice to 60 films in a calendar year. I am a pure vegetarian and a good cook. I feel proud to claim that I will stand first in any contest for cooking ‘Mamidikaya pappu'. I have a very cordial relationship with all music directors. They treat me like their family member - Keeravani garu, Manisarma garu, Koti garu, Ramana gogula garu etc. I am great lover of nature, flowers and pet animals. Everybody needs strong support during the process of building a career. Such a 'supporting pillar' in my life is none other than my mother. I once got a gold chain from Puttaparthi Sai Baba. On listening to my songs for about 20 minutes, Sathya Saibaba gifted me the gold chain and admired me a lot. I consider that as the greatest moment of my life.

Raasi's career as a heroine and mine as a dubbing artiste began simultaneously. The film clicked at the box-office and I became busy as a dubbing artiste. But I was not happy because my main aim was to shine as a singer not as a dubbing artiste. As far as the monetary aspect is concerned, dubbing actually fetches me a lot more than singing. Still, I wanted to sing." Sunitha was torn between her longing to become a singer and the profusion of offers to do dubbing for the new crop of heroines. In addition, she had problems, financial and otherwise, on the home front. "I then had a lot of family responsibilities. I was unwillingly to continue as a dubbing artiste. What I did not want to do became my favorite from the moment I gave my voice to Soundarya for the film 'Choodalani vundi'. Until then, I was telling producers that dubbing was not my forte. From then on, I have started saying dubbing is my profession. So far I have given voice to 590 films." Anchoring was a natural extension of her professional activities. Sunitha reminisces: "Those were the early days of TV channels. Gemini TV launched a music show called 'Nava Ragam'. Considering my accomplish-ments as a singer and as a dubbing artiste, they wanted me to anchor the program. Before all this happened, I used to also anchor for audio releases and films' 100 days functions. So with that experience I dared to anchor for Nava Ragam and within a short period I became popular. People started calling me 'Nava Ragam Sunitha'. That was the program from which a bunch of singers like Usha, Gopika Purnima, Mallikarjun, Ramu, Pardhasaradhi,Ghantadi Krishna etc were spotted. So that was the start as an anchor and later it was followed by shows like 'Zee' Sarigamapa… and so many others."

Celebration

Traditional dance forms seem to be morphing into mesmerizing forms in the digital age, with people acquiescing in what is happening. Garba and Dandiya Raas, which now come wrapped with flavors of Bollywood and Indipop music, are perfect examples. While pulsating beats blare out of loud speakers, the dancers who take part in modern versions of these traditional dance forms balk at their intrinsic features. Hyderabad Josh takes a look at how dancers have chosen to 'step out' of their comfort zones.

D

andiya Raas is Gujarat's glorious contribution to India's traditional dance forms. The distinguishing feature of Dandiya Raas is the colorful attire worn by all the dancers and the sticks they carry. Over the years, the dance form has become very 'fashionable' and brings out the rage in dancers. Performed across India, it is a distinctive feature of the Navratri festival, which pays tribute to nine incarnations of the Divine Mother. People observe fasts on all nine days of the festival and visit temples. During the festivities, the days are filled with devotion towards the

42

deity, while the nights are colorful and vibrant. Dandiya Raas, also called the "Stick Dance," is performed usually in a group by both men and women to lilting tunes. The sticks are beautifully decorated and are usually made of bamboo. They are painted in different colors. The performers hold sticks in both their hands and strike them together to the beat of musical instruments. The dancers form two concentric circles. Foot movements have to be in sync with the beats, with absolute control over body dynamics and observation of the space available.

The Dandiya Raas is mentioned in several ancient texts and is associated with Lord Krishna and his dalliances with the gopis. Originally, the songs were only about Krishna and his stories, but now other themes have come into use. Initially the Dandiya Raas starts slowly, but the tempo is built up gradually as the music crescendos, resulting in an exciting finish. The performers standing in a circle take simple steps forward and backward, while striking their sticks together and those of neighboring dancers. One of the circles of dancers revolves clockwise, while the other one revolves anti-clockwise. The dance is a very energetic and fast-paced, leaving no scope for slowdown that may deteriorate into lethargy. At times, members of one circle switch places with those of the other circle. After each unit of repetition, dancers move along the circles to the next partner. If there are many participants, several small circles may be formed. Depending on the space, the dancers may even stand in rows facing each other, instead of circles. The dancers are accompanied by an instrumentalist, who plays the 'meddale' drum. The person stands in the center of the two circles and 'moves' all the dancers with his enthralling beat. The sight of hundreds of people swaying to the beat of folk music transports you to an enchantingly different world. The sticks or Dandiyas, when struck together in a rhythm, produce foot-tapping

music. The best Dandiya Raas dancers of the region are the Kathiawari Raas dancers from Saurashtra.

THE SOURCE OF ENERGY Signifying the votive lamp that is prominently featured in the dance, the Garba is now very popular, particularly in western India. It is performed in honor of Goddess Kali or Durga, revered in Gujarat as Amba Mata or Mataji. The lamp symbolizes her energy. The dancers move around in circles as a way to invoke her blessings. Some dancers carry lighted earthen pots on their heads or small lamps in their hands. Elsewhere dancers carry pots placed inside a small wooden frame called a mandavdi. The Garba often begins with an Aarti, for the Goddess, after which the central lamp is lit. Although most of the Garba songs are in praise of the Goddess, other themes have come into use, particularly those linked to Lord Krishna. The dholak drum and the harmonium are typical instruments for Garba music. Dancers usually accompany their movements with clapping, but sometimes snap their fingers, or carry small cymbals called manjeera that they strike. In slower forms of Garba, and when pots are carried, there is no clapping, but just steps and body movements. There are a number of body movements, steps, arm movements and ways of clapping in the traditional form of Garba.

Women normally wear traditional Gujarati dress, the chania choli (skirt and blouse) combination or a sari. Men also normally wear traditional attire, the dhoti or churidars, and a kurtha or shirt. The dancers whirl and move their feet and arms in an orchestrated manner to the accompaniment of tuneful music with lots of drum beats. Aside from the drum, complementary percussion instruments like dholak and tabla are used. Originally Garba dances were devotional in nature. Performed in honor of Goddess Durga, it is actually supposed to stage a fight between the Goddess and Mahishasura, the mighty demon-king, and is therefore also called "The Sword Dance". Garba performed before Aarti is devotional, while the one performed after it is basically for merriment. During the nine nights of the festival, Garbas take place in every nook and corner of Gujarat. These days there are Garbas at temples, community centers and nightclubs, and even Garba competitions on stage. An 'evening' of Garba goes on until the early hours and involves numerous Garba songs with innumerable dancers participating. People join and exit the dance as they please. "Every year, we perform five Garba dances and songs dedicated to the Goddess Durga. Later, we sing other songs as well. There are some songs in different languages like Rajasthani besides Marathi Lavani, but the maximum are Gujarati folk songs," said Falguni Pathak. NOVEMBER 2008

Time management

REAL BONUS IN

L FE

Life is quite complex. There is not an iota of doubt about it. We have a lot to do every day. And, at the end of the day, literally and figuratively, there are many unfinished tasks. There’s work, cleaning, laundry and thousand and one other things to do. In spite of all this, find quality time.

E

-mail and mobile communications have blurred the boundaries between personal and work time. In many families, both parents work full time. Kids are engaged in a host of after-school activities, with some of them having their own part-time jobs.

Our lives these days are so fast-paced that much before we realize our children are off to college. That means they will get married soon and have kids of their own. There’s no point in wondering then how you ought to have spent your time. It will be too late.

biking, playing cricket/badminton/ baseball/ soccer or whatever, or going to movies. If none of these appeal to you, do nothing. Just talk, talk and talk your heart out!

Have Computer- and TV-free nights. Earmark at least one night per week for family dinner. As part of it, maybe you could make cooking and cleaning up a convivial group activity that involves all family members. Follow it up with board games at the kitchen table or a summer night in the backyard. Book a night once every month and let each member

Quality time is the time you choose to spend now with your loved ones: children, spouse and very close friends. It implies concentrated and uninterrupted time that you spend with them. It is much more than mere physical proximity and requires focusing all your energies on your loved one or ones.

Allow them to talk about their day and themselves. Encourage them to discuss concerns and achievements.

Here are some time-tested ways to help you make the most of the time you spend with the people you really care about during holidays and on weekends.

Go for an outing: Plan a day out at the zoo or museum. Teens may baulk at the idea, but you can make it interesting once you get there. At the end of the day, they are going to enjoy it and will be thankful to you.

Make it a date: Sit down with your family or friends — calendars, day planners or mobiles in hand — and firm up some holiday dates. That might include shopping, dinner, or visiting family friends. Carry this planning by keeping a calendar in the kitchen to book family time and set up dates for regular activities — kitties; family get-togethers;

Support a good cause: Volunteer together at an old age home, an orphanage, a community center or a charitable organization. You'll feel great about giving back to the community and at the same time feel rewarded for getting to spend quality time with friends or family.

of the family choose by turn their favorite restaurant. It gives everyone something to look forward to. Dinner: Let everyone in the family sit around the dinner table. There should be no distraction. Even phones should not be answered. This will give each member of the family confidence that it is entirely their time. You can then talk, as a family, about anything that is of common interest.

Connect with your kids: When you are spending time with your children, have nothing else on you mind. Your kids need and deserve your undivided attention. You could find out about your children’s day, what is going on between their friends and them. Oneon-one conversation with your child is a great way to make them learn things.

NOVEMBER 2008

Develop a group hobby: Winter is a great time to discover new neighborhoods or find the best local hot chocolate. Summer brings trips to local markets or the park. At such places, go for the best ice cream. Read a good book and talk about it: If you don't have time for a book club, it’s OK. Let your family members or friends pick their favorite magazine or newspaper story. You all can then get together and compare notes. Remember that old tune, 'Thank you for being a friend?' Pray for solutions: If there’s some problem or the other that is causing concern to the family, believe and seek solutions as one from the Almighty. Remember the proverb, “A family that prays together, stays together.”

Self-expression

Tattoos are in. There is not an iota of doubt about it. The very mention of the word ‘tattoo’ evokes vivid images of carnival slide shows, Maori warriors, drunken sailors, rock stars, rebels and absolutely bindaas settings.

48

NOVEMBER 2008

T

inventive and highly artistic expression of one’s identity and place in society. Naturally, special schools are turning tattoo aficionados into thorough professionals. In Hyderabad too, we find tattoo parlors or studios. In wellestablished ones, the days of walk-in are over, as you need prior reservation.

he grapevine has it that Sarah Palin’s lipliner is a tattoo. She is the governor of Alaska and running mate to Republican US Presidential candidate John McCain. Nearer home, we have desi heroes like Sanjay Dutt and Saif Ali Khan who proudly sport tattoos. So do most VJs and DJs.

Rajur opines that gangs or communities have their own special tattoos. Some others, who belong to the hip-hop or I-live-by-ownrules kinda folks, have become special clients in self-expression. He makes yet another notable observation. He feels that tattooing is a form of self expression that people can use to show their cause, solidarity, support or simply to strike up a conversation.

It does not matter if tattooing brings back memories of those long forgotten sailors, prisoners or bikers. Whet your curiosity about tattoos, instead of jumping on the bandwagon of those who despise it with a prejudiced mind. Mind you, everybody has a bias — on campuses, highways, runaways, in magazines, in theatres and on TV. In the West, tattoos were once the hallmark of diehard outcasts, rockers and rebels. As a class, they were associated with a macho culture. It is no longer so outlandish. It’s just an everyday thing. An event like the International London Tattoo Convention can attract thousands of punters queuing up round the block to get tattoos and to witness the human canvasses covered in eye-catching emblems, designs, symbols, patterns and anything that looks catchy or weird. It could be flaming dragons, vivid carp, stylized 50s pin-up girls and a cornucopia of other alternative imagery. There has been a dramatic shift in the status of the once-humble tattoo. In 19th Century Europe it was fashionable among some sections of the affluent classes to have discreet tattoos, particularly of family crests and other aristocratic emblems. Tattoos have gone in and out of the mainstream, points out Sharmista Tagore, an IT professional. They have become a symbol of working class masculinity. Now they are being re-crafted into a middle class symbol. Aarthi Sharma, another pro, feels that a tattoo can instantly transform you into a style icon. The unadorned stretch of arm, leg or stomach will suddenly be transformed into a beautiful canvas for a personalized statement, which could be artistic, countercultural or reflective of your self-assurance. Vivek Malhotra, a management graduate, avers, “You get tattoos for YOU and for no one else. If you like it then just go for it. If you don’t like it, then don’t go for it. Don’t live your life for someone else. Shweta, a fashion designer, chips in, “Wearing a tattoo and spending time describing a tattoo on your body to an inane herd of judgmental people is not worth it. Don’t waste your time on them. For many women, the most plausible reason for getting a tattoo is “reasserting control over your own body”. Thanks to human ingenuity, creative and commercial innovations in tattooing have

seen the emergence of tattoo parlors or studios. In many cities, including Hyderabad, such places have a professional air about them, with tattoo artistes having multiple options, gadgets and freedom. Rahul Kapoor, a software engineer based in Melbourne, comments: “I can’t speak for every guy, but personally I don’t like them or body piercing. They add nothing and really detract from your skin. What I mean is when I look at a girl I like the smooth look of her skin, but a tattoo can take away that smooth look. Maybe I don’t subscribe to that culture or maybe young guys will have a different perspective”. Basically, tattoos act like personalized plates. According to Rajur, a doctor from Dallas, white women prefer tattoos because they feel that their skin is too white. The guy engaging in a tattooing session is a purely an artist. He makes another interesting observation. He says that most of those who get tattooed strongly feel it is the most impressive way to flirt. Tattooed folks belonging to various gangs ask one another if they have selected the ‘right’ tattoo marks. It’s a kind of pre-testing, before they consider it to be safe enough to show off the markings to others outside their network or gang. If a girl likes to show her tattoo, she might have probably got it done to show her sculpted figure. If you’ve got it, flaunt it, period! For all tattooists, this art form is no less than self expression. New Age bodies have become mobile galleries. Do you know that Japan possesses the only known collection of modern tattooed human skins? They are preserved at the Medical Pathology Museum of Tokyo University. The 100-plus skins were collected as masterpieces of the art form. Sailor Norman Keith, a tattoo visionary of the mid-twentieth century, is credited with expanding the boundaries of tattooing and hastening the new creative era.

For Gen Next at least, tattoo is part of everything that is emerging–images, imagination, fine arts, dreams, literature or whatever. If you’ve got a tattoo, you would be seen as having an identity. Who you are and where you are does not matter, if you don’t have that kind of an identity. Who said beauty is skin deep? The tattoo artist seems to know the answer better .

Tattoos down the line

T

he process of tattooing is believed to have been perfected in Egypt about 6,000 years back. From Egypt tattooing spread to parts of Africa, Asia and the Pacific islands through trade lines and travelers. The word “tattoo” is believed to have been used for the first time in 1769 in Captain James Cook’s diary. At that time, people in many of the Pacific islands tattooed themselves. English sailors first got tattooed on these islands and then introduced the custom in Europe. Every culture has seen people tattoo themselves out of curiosity or for reasons of spirituality, protection, strength and self-expression. The Japanese have been tattooing since at least 400 BC not only for ornamental and narrative purposes, but also as a marking on criminals to help identify them. In the 1800s, it became fashionable for members of European royalty to be tattooed. Now, we have gadgets like electric tattoo machine and pen for a professional touch. With tattoos becoming less of a taboo, professional shops have opened up to usher in tattoo art. The advances in color and other tattoo equipment have made tattoos more than just a symbol or a testimony. It is today a real piece of art on skin.

Personality

Mahatma Gandhi said: "There will have to be rigid and iron discipline before we achieve anything great and enduring, and that discipline will not come by mere academic argument and appeal to reason and logic. Discipline is learnt in the school of adversity." Few learn discipline that way or endure baptism by fire. Dinaz Vervetwala, the high priestess of fitness, has that kind of discipline and steely determination. On February 18, 2005 all of a sudden a deadly blaze engulfed the house of Dinaz, consuming 45% of her body. From what was near death experience, she rose Phoenix-like for a fresh innings in life. In an interview with Hyderabad Josh, Dinaz shares the details of what shaped her great personality.

prove that real character comes out when one goes through a crisis. Blessed with a will power that is stronger than steel and imbued with fire that is still raging inside her, Dinaz is now building on what all she piled up as her singular accomplishments over the last 15 solid years. When she launched Dandia aerobics five years ago, the media got curious about

her. She then improved on the concept to give the aerobic dance form. The USP of Dinaz is aerobic dance, which has caught on in a big way ever since she started her fitness center. At Dinaz, people take chartbusters from Telugu, Hindi and English and choreograph them. They then teach the very same numbers as aerobic music and watch the

Aerobic dance is a fun way to get fit. It combines fat-burning aerobic movements, muscle-building exercises and stretching into routines that are performed to music. She incorporates dance forms that are used in films as well as disco, jazz and ballet. People of all ages can benefit from aerobic dance.

The fitness regime begins with an assessment of the customer's lifestyle, dietary patterns and habits. It is not the one hour that a customer spends at Dinaz that counts. What he or she does with the other 23 hours is of prime concern.

No matter what you've done for yourself or for humanity, if you can't look back on having given love and attention to your own family what have you really accomplished?

It changes how the body burns calories. The heart and blood circulation become more efficient. Blood pressure lowers. Body fat is reduced. The muscles and blood carry and utilize oxygen better. It reduces fats like cholesterol and triglycerides. The risk for blocked arteries is reduced. The body can better tolerate stress.

On being a trendsetter in fitness regime My clients like the idea of using groovy music. They dance away to glory, burning calories without even realizing it. At the same time, they enjoy the chartbusters.

On her attitude I have a great attitude no matter how many tough challenges life poses. I have experienced the worst

I want to uplift the country's fitness industry and enhance its status without bothering about investment or revenues.

On her family

[Dinaz's husband has been a source of great support to her through thick and thin. They are blessed with two sons who are pursuing their education at Ooty. The elder one, Yohan, occasionally chips in for the family's business. The younger one is Zeeshan. She wants her children to scale great heights in life through education.]

On unwinding I love to be at home with serenity. Any hill station is OK. I like lofty peaks, deep gorges, lush green valleys, gushing rivers, enchanting mountains, lakes and flower-adorned meadows. My favorite holiday spot is Munnar, where there is pristine purity and tranquility.

On her aspirations I have a dream: to act in a Telugu film. I even have the script ready. [Hey, producers and directors, are you listening?]

On her signature statement I breathe what I do. That is my life. NOVEMBER 2008

L

egendary pop group BONEY M set the floor on fire during the Pink Ribbon Nite 2008 held recently at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre. Marcia Barrett, the lead singer, performer, writer and producer, also a breast cancer survivor, performed for the first time in Hyderabad. Aside from Marcia Barrett, Marcus James from Jamaica, Elizabeth from America, Tooty from Indonesia and Isabel and Philly from Germany were among the lead performers and lead vocalists. They stole the hearts of teenyboppers with their popular numbers like ‘Daddy cool’, ‘Sunny’, ‘Rasputin’, ‘No woman No cry’, ‘Rivers of Babylon’, ‘Hoorah Hoorah It’s a Holi Holiday’ and ‘Belfast’. The Ushalakshmi Breast Cancer Foundation, in association with KIMS–Ushalakshmi Centre for Breast Diseases, A.P.Tourism Development Corporation, Novotel Hyderabad, FICCI, B & C organized the show, with Mr. David Mulford, US Ambassador to India and Mrs. Jeannie Mulford, a breast cancer survivor, as the chief guests.

Self-made

"I love life. I take life as it comes to me. I have a living style that keeps me in sound health and has contributed to my prosperity," says ebullient Tollywood producer 'Dil' Raju' in an interview with Hyderabad Josh. A man who has scaled great heights in the film industry from humble origins as a film distributor, handsome Dil Raju shares his views on lifestyle and candidly airs his opinions on eating, dressing, health, habits, hobbies, success and the like. On simplicity: Being rich and successful is not the same as having prestige. It comes with prosperity. I can afford to be luxurious about things, but I think about their necessity too. I don't mind going anywhere on a two-wheeler. But once when I went to office on a two-wheeler, my partners Laxman and Sirish told me: "When you reach certain position in life, you need to maintain a lifestyle that is appropriate to it. If people see you coming on a motorbike, they won't relate it to your simplicity. They will relate it only to your riches and may start a rumor that your chapter is closed." I am simple and casual by choice.

Attire: My dress my not say what I am, but it will certainly say how I am and how I look. So, I am very particular about my costumes. I always go for readymades. People in the film industry appreciate my dress sense. I believe that decent attire increases confidence levels. Health: Maintaining sound health is very important. Eight years ago I was very fat, weighing nearly 80 kgs. Once one of my 'Vadinas' (sisters-in-law) cracked a joke, saying she may have to widen their doorway to let me in. Later, I started morning walk, gym, yoga and dieting. Now my weight hovers between 70 and 73 kgs. Control over weight leads to many wonders in lifestyle.

and non-vegetarian food. But when I decided to control my weight, I stopped eating a lot. Like a taster at star hotels, I just taste all the items these days. Social circles: I talk very less and maintain a low profile in new circles and with elderly people. Sometimes people mistake me for a snob. But I can't help it. I cannot be as casual and free with Chiranjeevi garu and Nagarjuna garu as I am with Bunny and Naga Chaitanya. Quality time: My family consists of three members - me, my wife and my daughter. My happiness, prosperity, enthusiasm and energy spring from my wife and daughter. We are very friendly. I never carry home my tensions. I don't discuss business matters with my wife. It's not that they have no right to interfere, but it's only to keep them away from worries. At home, I talk only about happy things.

Hobbies and Habits: I am interested in doing anything that will enhance my knowledge of film-making. So, I watch a lot of movies and study trends. I am a teetotaler. I don't smoke. Film circles are surprised that I don't ever booze. I often host cocktail parties, but I don't touch liquor. Only once in my life I had a small sip of champagne. When 'Arya' proved to be a big hit, hero Allu Arjun forced me like anything to have "at least a drop." That was the first and the last time I had it in my life. Smoking is never my choice‌ Moreover, I hate it." Food and Dieting: Food is an important factor for our health and stamina. I love to eat a lot of ice cream, cakes, sweets

Since all the seven films are successful, she is waiting for two more releases with hopes that she can organize a function to celebrate triplehattrick.

My wife is very happy with my accom-plishments. So far, I have released seven films - Dil, Arya, Bhadhra, Bommarillu, Munna, Parugu and Kotha Bangarulokam. Since all the seven films are successful, she is waiting for two more releases with hopes that she can organize a function to celebrate triple-hattrick. She takes great care of me, but I think I am not doing 100 % justice as a husband. I am not in a position to spare good time for my family. Once every year we go abroad for on a week-long tour. Friendships and relations: I give priority to friends and relations. My best friends are none other than my partners Laxman and Sirish. They are the only ones with whom I discuss everything. Among heroes Bunny, Prabhas and NTR are the ones with whom I move very closely. I maintain good relations with one and all in the film industry. Experiential learning: In the process of film-making, I think the script of a movie is closely linked to the fate of a producer. In my view, nothing and nobody is bigger and greater than the script. All my scripts have been well-received by the audience. My formula is to focus on the script.

Glimpses

SRK no king at home

S

hah Rukh Khan is no King at home. His kids wake him up, saying "Get up, Daddy." The doting dad does his part at home too exceedingly well. Extremely busy shooting for his home production 'Billoo Barber' and 'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi,' he said: "It's better to be known as 'King Khan' than 'Pauper Khan'. My kids don't wake me up in the morning saying,'Get up,King," he says. Suhana and Aryan watch WWF and they are great admirers of Khali. They expressed their desire to meet Khali. Papa SRK fulfilled their wish by inviting him to a dinner at Mannat in Mumbai. Khali was given a grand reception when he landed in India. The kids were excited to meet their hero.

Hrithik Keeps His Word

H

rithik Roshan has kept his word and taken his family on a week-long holiday, after instructing his business manager and secretary not to bother him with anything related to work. Pending shooting for his home production Kites, Hrithik Roshan dashed to Bora Bora, some 160 miles from Tahiti. The place is said to be a tourist's paradise. Hrithik had promised his wife Sussanne a holiday a long time ago. Recently, Abhishek and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan had been to the island on a short holiday. The next shooting schedule for Kites begins in November. Hrithik had planned to be back in time to celebrate Diwali at home along with his family. The Jodhaa Akbar star had advanced his Mumbai arrival by two days to attend the re-launch party of the famous Bandra pub, Poison. Sussanne's sister Farah Khan Ali's hubby DJ Aqeel is the in-house DJ of Poison. Hrithik was seen dancing along with Sussanne at the party past midnight. His English accent sounded different as well. Perhaps, it was the Kites effect. The day after the party, he went on his vacation.
