Heralding Change

W

e come across many political leaders from various parties. But, few of them can be compared with some of the stalwarts of the older generation. We hardly find leaders of great stature these days. Dr. Jayaprakash Narayan is among a rare breed of politicians. “JP,” as he is endearingly called, is known for his honesty and straightforwardness. Initially as a civil servant and later as a grassroots-level change agent, he has facilitated many transformative programs and processes with farreaching impact. He is one leader who knows when to hail the government and when to flail it. It is a different matter that the government welcomes his bouquets, but plays down his brickbats. In an interview, JP shares what shaped his life and thinking. Last month many areas of our beautiful city assumed a rustic splendor due to Karteeka Masam Vanabhojanalu. Shilparamam, with its enchanting atmosphere, multiplied the thrill of the festivities manifold. You can see it all in this issue. We also have Christmas coming up. This means we will find Hyderabadis in a festive mood right from the first week of December. We have a story that will capture the mirth in all its dimensions. Today it has become fashionable to launch everything with a gala fashion show in Hyderabad. No wonder, every day there is at least one such show organized somewhere or the other in the city, be it a product launch or an awards function. Our cover story this month goes into the mechanics of marketing through fashion shows. Single parenting is common today, particularly in the metros and Hyderabad is no exception. We have a story that discusses why it is happening and how a single parent handles the situation. Lion Kiron, CEO of Suchirindia, has exalted our city with his achievements as a businessman and contribution as a philanthropist. He tells our readers about his dreams in an exclusive interview, which is quite inspiring. What else? Glamour doll Hansika is also there to provide a stimulating fare in her interview. Nandi Awards bring the entire constellation of stars onto one platform for spectacular celebrations. Our cameraman zeroes in on the great moments of the recent awards function. Our Tollywood and Bollywood snippets are as juicy as ever. All told, we have everything to give you josh… Happy reading!

Glimpses Yoga shaped Anushka

A

nushka has been giving youth sleepless nights with her stunning beauty and flawless structure. Although she entered the Tinsel town with the film ‘Run’, the real run in her filmi career began with the roaring success of the film ‘Super’. She has so far done 10 Telugu films and one Tamil film. Her stellar performances have already jacked up her minimum remuneration to over Rs. 75 lakhs as of now. Filmi circles say producers are willing to pay her more if only she can give early dates. It shows the industry's craze for her. Of her 10 films in Telugu, ‘Vikramarkudu’ opposite Ravi Teja, Lakshyam and Souryam with Gopichand, Chintakayala Ravi with Venki are noteworthy hits. Although she looks pretty in any costume, Anushka prefers to wow audiences with her trademark black & white ensembles. She likes to present herself that way even while wearing a full-fledged saree. Because of her amiable nature, southern directors, producers and costars pitch for Anushka. Born on November 7, 1981 in Mangalore, Anushka did her B.C.A. and started a Yoga school. For some time she was a yoga instructor too. Now she lets everybody know: “Yoga is the secret of my energy.”

NTR 'screening' his performance

T

he absence of Nandamuri clan's “Young Turk” NTR at the ‘Yuva Gharjana’ held recently in Guntur was conspicuous. Although the Telugu Desam Party continues to crow over the resounding success of Yuva Gharjana, NTR's fans maintain that had the young tiger been there, the dais would have seen clarion calls coming straight from his heart as well as profound statements with far-reaching impact. Anyhow, past is past. Now, NTR is preparing to launch his campaign and the TDP is eagerly looking forward to hearing his Solo Gharjana. Insiders say that NTR has strategized his tour in such a way that his political posturing will not negatively impact his filmi career. Actually, film industry circles are keen on listening to fiery speeches of this young hero who has made a mark with his oratorical skills. They recall the spell-binding speeches he has delivered in the past. Naturally, his fans and well-wishers want him to set the floor ablaze in the political arena as well.

Feminine grace

Inner beauty for outer glow Having a glowing skin is indeed a blessing. You may be spending a lot of time trying to hide blemishes, discoloration or dullness. You may want to look clean and neat with or without your lotions and make-up. There are practical ways in which you can make your skin glow. Hyderabad Josh presents some down-to-earth tips for a wonderful skin.

N

othing shows a woman's beauty like her skin. When your skin glows you look resplendent. You will glow inside out. The best example is a pregnant woman's skin. We often hear people exclaim, “Her skin is so beautiful... She has such a glow!

Beauty is skin deep. What we eat and drink as well as what we avoid can have a lasting effect on our skin. Poor nutrition shows on our skin, especially as we age. Nutrients and supplements are essential to keep your skin radiant and well-toned. Vitamins in some creams and lotions do help improve complexion. If you want to have a beautiful skin, you need to start on the inside. Acne and wrinkles have multiple causes, but nutrition can help enhance your skin's natural beauty. A diet rich in antioxidant vitamins and minerals is a prerequisite for a radiant skin. Studies have found that certain antioxidants-Vitamin C, Vitamin E, selenium and Vitamin A in particular -nourish and protect skin, while enhancing its youthful appearance.

TIPS FOR A BEAUTIFUL SKIN Tip #1: Drink lots of water! The more water you drink, the better your skin will look. Tip #2: Eat plenty of fresh vegetables -- the more uncooked ones you eat, the better. Your body needs minerals and nutrients that you get from raw and fresh vegetables. Tip #3: Do not smoke. Nicotine yellows your skin, clogs the pores of your skin and gives you those nasty blackheads. Think of what else it must be doing to the rest of your body. Tip #4: Take vitamins! They help keep you healthy. They help you sleep better. If you are taking the right vitamins, your skin will get the nourishment it needs. All that nourishment will make you look and feel younger. Tip #5: Get plenty of rest. Sleep is the time when the body regenerates. Let your body regenerate fully. Never stay up too late for reasons that cannot be justified. Get up early every day. Of course, you may have to go the extra mile in your project. Still, you cannot afford to compromise on your beauty for some Brownie points at work. Tip #6: Reduce overall stress in your life through a sound exercise regimen or yoga. Your whole body mirrors stress: the way you walk, the look in your eye, the haggard appearance of your skin, the manner in which you talk and even the way in which you sit in a chair.

Traditions

Eating out is always enjoyable. Nothing can beat eating alfresco and that too right in the lap of Nature

T

elugu people attach great importance to Karteeka masam, with vanabhojanalu (having sathvik food amidst soothing verdure). The month, which begins a day after Diwali, is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Throughout the month, temples dedicated to Lord Siva teem with devotees. Since it is the onset of winter too, the weather is pleasant. The month is traditionally a favorite time for friends and relatives to assemble and enjoy out in the open. Short trips are arranged packing vanabhojanalu into it on the outskirts of the city or in enchanting temples that have lovely gardens. The specialty of Karteeka masam is that people from different places gather at one place, have alfresco lunch, take a trip down memory lane to childhood incidents and go back home totally recharged. After lunch, children and elders alike shed their inhibitions and play outdoor games. These community-based associations have started arranging Vana bhojanalu to ensure that the community is well-knit, despite changes occasioned by cross-cultural influences. Likewise, associations of employees and apartments also organize convivial activities along with Vana bhojanalu, mostly on Sundays. Much

Personality

Articulating profound thoughts of sublime love flawlessly through an ancient form of musical rendition in a foreign language is a gargantuan task. Kesiraju Srinivas, better known as 'Ghazal Srinivas,' is a past master at that and has given over 5,000 performances across the globe till date. In an interview to Hyderabad Josh, the maestro, involved in popularizing Gandhian principles through ghazal, pays tribute to the unifying power of music.

S

rinivas, who hails from Palakollu in West Godavari district, has been singing Telugu ghazals since 1986. Over the years, he has developed a distinctive style of rendering ghazals that goes well with kanjeera, the only instrument he uses as an accompaniment. He analyzes each stanza of the ghazal he renders, shedding light on its hidden meanings and nuances. An out-and-out Telugu bidda, Srinivas got attracted to ghazal at a concert. By providence or prod of instincts, he decided there and then that his destiny lay in becoming a ghazal singer. Today, he is credited with giving ghazal a proper structure and format. His prodigious output as a composer has received accolades from umpteen quarters. At home too, Srinivas strikes a chord. The ghazal maestro religiously calls his mother (who lives in Palakollu) the first thing in the morning. "This gives me greatest satisfaction," he says. When asked about the happiest and most cherished moments of his life, he says with paternal pride: "The birth of my daughter (Sanskriti)." His daughter accompanies him on tours. “My daughter is multifaceted. She is already making waves, he asserts. As for moments of agony, he recalls, with tears welling in his eyes: "My brother and my father underwent bypass surgeries in 2004 and I bore the cost. My mother called me and asked me to give her 'back' her husband and elder son." Srinivas loves his mother and is grateful to her for the being a tough taskmaster. He reminisces without any trace of rancor: "When I was a child she used to beat me up for my mistakes. She used to make unsavory remarks. All that has helped me become what I am today."

DECEMBER 2008

The ghazal, of Persian origin, is regarded as sublime mystical poetry. Great seers, including Hâfez, Sa' di and Rûmî, immortalized ghazal, which extols love intoxication and consecrates the emotion of pure love as divine. Ghazal became popular among the educated classes linked to various Sufi brotherhoods. The origins of ghazal can be traced to the 10th century A.D when it took roots in Iran. It grew from the Persian variant of qasida -- a panegyric often dedicated to the Emperor.

Srinivas’s Wife Sureka and cute daughter Sanskriti

In course of time, a section The mother got a gift of lifetime on her birthday when Srinivas was conferred an honorary doctorate. She shared the stage with him. "I was doubly joyous as I gave the most precious gift to her instantly." The ghazal maestro considers Sureka, his wife, as the best critic. "She has such genteel behaviour. I adore her for her unstinted support in all my endeavours. Srinivas believes that music has the power to unite humanity. "I want my daughter to follow in my footsteps. I want her to surpass me." To him, excellence is not a skill, but an attitude. He has performed in several parts of the world, including the US, England, Wales, Scotland, Singapore, Malaysia, Kuwait, Qatar, Dubai, Sharjah, Australia, Sri Lanka, Muscat, Oman and Abu Dhabi. A string of honorary doctorates conferred on him by universities in India and abroad gives an inkling of the incredible achievements of Srinivas, who is now the brand ambassador and advisor for the Andhra Pradesh Olympic Association. Between June 2nd and 3rd in 2008, Srinivas sang in 76 languages at a concert in Vijayawada, thus meriting an entry in

the Guinness Book of World Records for "most languages sung." Gandhi is his favorite movie and he champions Gandhigiri. Srinivas went to Pakistan with his friend on foot, covering more than 1,538 kms, to spread the message of nonviolence. He was never nervous about risking his life. "I wanted to prove that humanity is one." Interestingly, the string of awards and recognition he has won is founded on his mission to spread the message of Gandhi in many languages. "I am not a performer. I am a reformer," he maintains. Srinivas is an ardent fan of Sachin. He loves to surf the net and makes it a point to answer each one of his fan mail with patience and warmth that wow his fans. The ghazal aficionado has established the Ghazal Charitable Trust and donates liberally. He conducts workshops and arranges mushairas to fund courses for aspiring music students. "Life is a beautiful script written by God for everyone," he says philosophically.

of the qasida called tashbib branched off into the ghazal form. Whereas the qasida sometimes ran into as many as 100 couplets or more in mono-rhyme, the ghazal seldom exceeded 12 with the average being seven. In light of its relative brevity, ease of comprehension and thematic variety, the ghazal eclipsed the qasida and became the most popular form of poetry in Iran. In several parts of the globe, this refined lyrical poetry has inspired many artists. DECEMBER 2008

very dish has its own specialty. Epicureans have a liking for kababs. Nowadays, many types of kababs are available in Hyderabad. Adding to the rich variety, the Radison group recently opened its "Great Kabab Factory" on Road No 12 in Banjara Hills. According to Dr. Ramesh, Managing Director, the eatery signifies the group's entry in Hyderabad, after a successful South India foray in Chennai. They currently have XX branches in 10 major cities across four countries. Mr. Ashna Kapoor, Director (Brand Development), says the group aims to have at least 50 branches in 15 countries by 2012. The factory's motto is to serve Hyderabadis the best varieties of kababs daily.

Kababs are essential in any royal repast, especially if they come replete with marinades of yoghurt, cream and cashew pastes and a tinge of saffron. These days kababs are made also with coulis using vegetable or fruit pastes and other marinades. Some city eateries make kababs in traditional marinades. Occasionally, restaurants serve Kalmi mirch ka jhinga- char grilled jumbo prawns spiced with black pepper

corns alongside Anjeer ki champeinskewered tender lamb chops marinated with fig and onion coulis. Maans ke sole mutton marinated with red chilly paste is another draw in some restaurants. There are many takers for both vegetarian and non-vegetarian kababs. Whether it is fiery Hari mirch paneer tikka or a mildly spicy Laisuni murgh tikka, the fare is always irresistible. To make it filling enough, foodies prefer hot crisp naans and dal on the royal spread.

Child Care

Reports suggest that in the last 20 years the increase in the number of single-parent families has altered the make-up of the family unit in the developed world. Even in India, which has just arrived on the world scene with stunning achievements in several fields, the traditional family unit, with the father as the provider and the mother as the homemaker, is undergoing tremendous changes. For various reasons, there is a noticeable increase in the number of single-parent families in many cities, including Hyderabad. Marking a clear break from the past, these days children are more likely to reside in a single-parent family for reasons other than the death of a parent. Many of the single-parent families are headed by 20

DECEMBER 2008

women. Single mothers, with dependent children, often find themselves financially stretched to the limit, considering their income has to cover high child-care costs. In the absence of government support and with no financial or child-care support from fathers, many of these single-parent families may find the going tough. Inadequate income undermines single-parent families and children are indirectly affected, given the inextricable link between economic stress and mental health. With single mothers sinking into depressive emotional states, children are unwittingly caught up in a painful cycle that could blight their future. Hyderabad Josh takes a look at the possibilities of putting order in single-parent families.

P

arenting is a major responsibility. The task becomes even more challenging when the mantle of bringing up a little one falls on a single parent. A single parent has to bear with additional responsibilities, considering normal tensions and pressures. Due to separation, divorce or death of a spouse, a single parent needs to juggle multiple tasks, each of which may be quite demanding. This does not mean that a single parent's life is foredoomed to remain bleak. There are always meaningful ways to overcome the initial apprehensions about single parenting. STEPS TOWARDS SUCCESSFUL SINGLE PARENTING: ACT RESPONSIBLY: You need to take care of all the physical and emotional needs of your child. You need to keep an eye on the child's personal hygiene, dietary habits, school work, punctuality and interaction with peers. You may choose to partially share some of this responsibility with the child's grandparents,a trusted friend or a maidservant. In any case, you are responsible for the child's proper upbringing at the end of the day. You cannot afford to shirk this responsibility. At the most, you can take breaks so as to come back with fresh ideas to better groom your child.

MAKE RIGHT DECISIONS: Confide in people whom you can trust on matters concerning your child's future, be it education, hostel accommodation or foreign travel. You will be surprised to learn that when it comes to your child's interests, there are many people who offer really sound advice. If you are on talking terms with your ex-spouse (now separated), it is not a bad idea to consult him or her on something that impacts your progeny. Let the child meet the separated parent, unless such meeting is fraught with complications. In any case, take crucial decisions on your own. FILL THE GAP: At times, a single parent may have to take the place of the missing parent. You should then epitomize an ideal parent. Never let your personal bitterness, bad experiences, petty annoyances and seething anger infect your child's psyche. Be frank with the child. It is not fair to badmouth and poison the child's mind against the separated spouse. Your child needs to realize the importance of friendships and lasting human relationships. ENJOY YOUR SPACE: Parenting is just one side of your total personality. You need to be aware of the vulnerability of your child, but don't get carried away and remain obsessed with your child. You need space for yourself. You cannot do everything for your child on

your own. You need outside help. Get help by all means. It is equally important for you to meet your own needs in terms of having a healthy social life. INSULATE YOUR CHILD: It is only human to get tired and frustrated sometimes. But, you must refrain from taking out destructive emotions on your child. Try to share responsibilities or else you may end up compromising on spending quality time with your child. You don't have to feel guilty about employing a housemaid or a cooking help. HANDLE PEER PRESURE: Imagine the feelings of your child on Parents' Day at school. Prepare yourself and your child for such special occasions. Never let past issues spoil you child's fun. Help your child in dealing with uncomfortable questions from friends. Let your child not feel ashamed of having a single parent. Otherwise, the child could become hypersensitive. Having both parents is definitely different from having a single parent. So, you need to take the initiative to help the child overcome the feelings of lack right from the beginning. As long as you refrain from indulging in bouts of self-pity and depression, single parenting will not unsettle your child. Attitude is everything. Lead by example and instill in your child the right attitude.

Role Model

Pic by M.C. Sekhar

Dr. Jayaprakash Narayan of the Lok Satta Party is one leader who loves to lead from the front, come what may. He reminds us of his namesake "JP" - Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan, who was the rallying point for India's politicians with spine during the Emergency. In an interview to Hyderabad Josh, the activist-politician presents his grand vision for a vibrant democracy.

Excerpts:

HJ Can you tell us about your upbringing and student life?

r Certainly. I was born in 1956. My father, a railway employee, was based in Maharashtra. I grew up there until I was seven. When I turned eight, I was sent to my grandfather's village, where I studied. I can proudly say that I come from a village. When I was doing Intermediate in Loyala College at Vijayawada, I saw the world in a new light. Everything seemed new and wonderful to me. 22

DECEMBER 2008

Until then, I did not know anything about cricket and tennis. The only games I knew were kabbadi and kho-kho. I had good friends amidst a pleasant environment. I used to spend a lot of time in the library, reading fiction, history, literature, politics and every kind of books. I used to read a new book every day. I didn't leave any book unread. The habit of reading exposed my mind to great thoughts and finest minds. I had a transistor radio with me. I used to listen to BBC broadcasts regularly. All this helped foster rationalism in me. I started to see everything in a rational

and logical manner. I began to seek evidence for everything. Even today I ask a hundred questions before believing in anything.

HJ Did you frequent cinema theaters? r Of course! Sometimes I used to see two or three films in a single day. I used to watch particularly old films. Nowadays, I rarely watch films. HJ Are you in touch with your college friends? r Definitely. Even after 38 years, I am in touch with my friends. We meet now and then

and take a nostalgic trip. HJ Did your parents encourage you in your plans?

r My parents encouraged me in all respects. When I told my parents that I didn't want to go to healthcare field after completion of medicine and that I would prefer civil services, they initially did not like the idea. But, when they realized that I was firm in my goals, they encouraged me a lot. HJ Could you tell us about your family? r Ours is a middle class family. We are four -my wife Radha, son Siddharth and daughter Snigdha. My wife has been with me through thick and thin. She and my children encourage me a lot. I told my wife, "Don't think that I will retire in civil services." Maybe, she didn't take me seriously then. But, after she understood my dreams, she became very supportive. HJ Today many people, including educated ones, identify themselves as your fans. How do you feel about this adulation?

r (Smiles) I don't take it seriously, because I don't believe in hero worship. You need to be a hero yourself. You shouldn't worship someone else. It's OK if someone does a good job. Go and congratulate him or her and encourage that person with good words. But, don't adore him. I want my people to be dignified. HJ Many people admire you. But, who are the people you admire? r I admire (former National Dairy Development Board chairman and Father of White Revolution) Verghese Kurien. I admire (farmers' leader and founder of Shetkari Sanghatana) Sharad Joshi. I may differ from their ideologies. But, I like them for their fighting spirit and for their achievements. I like people who achieve a lot in life.

Positive changes that Lok Satta supported Mandatory disclosure of financial details and criminal antecedents, if any, of all candidates contesting for electoral office Simplification of voter registration Establishment of National Health Mission, which seeks to deliver universal access to healthcare over the next decade Enactment of the Right to Information Act Citizen's Charters in AP municipalities

HJ Are you a foodie? r No…not at all. I am a vegetarian. I need ordinary food. Right from my childhood beerakaya pappu has been my favorite item. I take lot of fruits. HJ What are your hobbies?

r Reading in particular. I like humor, history

JP with family and astronomy. I am a badminton player. I like to solve puzzles published in newspapers and magazines. The moment I open the newspaper, my eyes dart to the puzzle. I work on the puzzle and then go for the news. Such is my obsession with puzzles. HJ Which TV channels do you watch?

r In addition to news channels, I like to watch National Geographic and History channels HJ How will you describe your mentality?

r I still feel like a village kid going to school. To my children, I am a child. To my friends, I am a friend. Do you know that I am basically a very shy person? I don't have anything against anyone. I don't bear grudges. I never hurt people. There is no bitterness in my mind. If at all I criticize anyone, it will be only for a social cause. HJ What is your philosophy?

r Good question. According to me, there are three things which are important for human beings: survival, harmony and freedom. For survival, our needs must be met so that we can grow up in society. For harmony, we should not be narrow-minded or divided by caste, religion or region. To enjoy freedom, we should be in a position to express all our views and feelings. My life is all about it. You can call it my philosophy. HJ What is your message to today's youth? r About 73 percent of our population is youth. They must think that they can change society. I completely believe in them. Today's youth are very lucky compared to our generation. They have ample opportunities. They are highly talented. They can achieve anything. Let them go for it.

The man and his mission

A

man of integrity and courage, Dr. Jayaprakash Narayan is lovable, good and simple. Despite being an intellectual with great achievements, he is amiable and approachable. His influence on today's educated youth is immense. Dr. Jayaprakash Narayan joined the IAS in 1980. After 16 eventful years in public service and with a string of personal achievements, he chose to launch public spirited campaigns to cleanse the system. He strongly believes that the country's progress cannot be smooth unless the faulty governance process is corrected. As the first step, he resigned from the IAS in 1996 and launched the Lok Satta movement in 1997. Even as a civil servant he called a spade a spade. As an activist, he got involved in the rehabilitation of thousands of youth from families displaced by the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, contributed to the design of the modified drainage and irrigation networks in Krishna and Godavari deltas and worked to streamline credit cooperatives. The Lok Satta, now a party with a significant presence in Andhra Pradesh, has been playing an exceptional role in strengthening the roots of democracy.

hic chandeliers illuminate rooms in intricate patterns and enhance the aesthetic appeal of classy buildings.

In good old days, chandeliers were used primarily to illuminate large halls. Chandeliers then comprised a wooden cross with a number of spikes on which candles could be secured. In the 15th century, chandeliers based on ring or crown designs gained popularity. Used mainly for decorative purposes by wealthy people, such chandeliers became a status symbol. Towards the early 18th century, ornate cast brass and ormolu forms with curved arms and many candles became prominent fixtures in palatial buildings. Chandeliers assumed many shapes throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.

Advances in glassmaking saw the production of less expensive and highly refractive lead crystal, which resulted in the creation and proliferation of crystal chandeliers. Gasolier (portmanteau for gas and chandelier) became the flavor of the period, with many candle chandeliers being converted to gas ones.

In the 1890s, due to widespread use of electricity for illumination, chandeliers that could be used with both gas and electricity were produced. In due course, with electricity becoming the norm in home fixtures, chandeliers wired only for electricity became the standard. Towards the end of the 20th century, the chandelier more or less ceased to be a source of illumination. It has since been used mainly as a showpiece in imposing structures.

Nilesh and Sunilla Eti, a prominent P3 couple, too own such a palatial house in New MLAs & MPs Colony in Jubilee Hills. "We have what we wanted exactly," they say exchanging knowing smiles. As one enters the house, well-maintained lawns and a wooden ramp overlying an artificial pond at the center arrest attention. "Ours is simple and contemporary. The faรงade is quite different. Generally, lawns bedeck the front area of houses. But, we wanted our lawns to be at the center of our house. We want privacy whenever we party," Nilesh explains laughingly. The lovely couple hosts at least one big party every month. The night atmosphere in dim light then sparkles with fun and laughter. The entire ambience is so natural that from morning to evening colorful birds and enchanting butterflies flit among plants dotting the lawns as if they too own the place. Nilesh and Sunilla, who constructed the house two years back, personally supervised every detail of the wellthought-out plan. "My wife likes Kerala style of construction. So, our architect Sudhir Reddy designed it accordingly," says Nilesh. The main building of the house is classy. The couple planned everything together and saw to it that everything -- from glass to chandeliers - was in its place in the best possible manner. Most of the interiors were sourced from Delhi. The glass-walled dressing-cum-bathrooms are aesthetically appealing and ooze a charm that blends with tempting tranquility. The four-bedroom house with furnishings that stand out is an example of how vast spaces can be creatively used. Paintings and antiques decorating the walls give ethereal beauty to the bedrooms. All this is not enough for the beautiful couple. "We still bring interiors whenever we go to other metros in the country or travel abroad. We want our home to be fresh and new. "

T

he barrier between Ranbir Kapoor and Upen Patel became obvious recently during shooting for Raj Kumar Santoshi's flick Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani. The young actor seemed ill at ease on the sets of the movie, apparently because Upen Patel (Deepika's ex-boyfriend) was around. Ranbir and Katrina Kaif play the lead in the film, but Upen has a sizeable role in it. The frosty relations between Ranbir and Upen apart, everyone was wondering what would happen if Deepika and Upen run into each other, because the stars were put up in the same hotel.

Shows That Fashion Markets F

ashion shows are the 'in' thing and by choice Hyderabad has become the launch pad of high-end products and services offered by some of the world's leading names. The bigger the name, the grander the show seems to be the mantra that spells instant magic and unqualified success. Tune in to any channel, flip through any magazine, surf the net or simply look around you to see the power of fashion gripping virtually everyone. That's the power of fashion. Fashion shows constitute the public face of this invincible power, which never fails to pack a lot of punch in marketing. Replete with style mantras or style statements, fashion shows are bound to click. At the end of the day, these shows mirror fashion gurus hobnobbing with celebrities. The shows help define the identity of a product. Whether it is the introduction of a new line of dazzling diamonds or the unveiling of a new two-wheeler, fashion shows initiate the brand buzz and put the much-needed zing into marketing efforts. A fashion show has become more or less indispensable for the launch of real estate ventures, magazines, awards functions, TV channels, electronic goods, retail stores or whatever. and Bangalore demand and get what they want. Film stars usually make a killing.

This love affair with fashion or ramp shows is to grab the attention and be in the limelight for as long as it is possible. These events introduce products and services of every kind. Observers in the fashion industry say that fashion shows remain the top fashion influence and that of late they have started drawing foreign talent into the city.

DECEMBER 2008

The best part is that fashion shows/ melas/ weeks increase the desirability quotient of the products and services being launched. Take any fashion event and you can see that the designer line-up is crucial in announcing the boldness of the new product or service. We see a lot of perfumes, cars, bikes and the like getting their due. Through these shows they announce one thing loud and clear: "I have arrived." Like in the metros, following fashion trends has become a craze in Hyderabad and being ethnic and trendy is considered a sure sign of smartness. Fashion statements are made with deep impact and in exclusive style when designers take the center stage. There is glitz and glamour that gets attached to the new product.

As an adjunct to the launch of new products and services, we see stylish, sophisticated and hot trends. We get to witness stunning professional female models pose near bikes, wear the just-launched branded jewelry or sing peans to men's wear between soaps.

THE GAP yderabad is yet to reach a point where there is a healthy balance between professional models and choreographers who interact with sponsors. Some sponsors need to change their mind-set, as they have notions that local talent is not enough. Models are often taken for granted by so-called modeling schools.

H

These shows have become mandatory for product launches because the objective is to establish a strong brand recall. Such shows help reinforce the message the product maker wants to drive home. Imagine the kind of associations that one conjures up when a new product is launched. The sartorial sale does wonders for a new product. The pride and beauty of association is at times as relevant as the launch of the product or service. A model sashaying down the ramp during fashion festivals is hard to ignore. It is also a great PR exercise, enabling the not-sofamous to rub shoulders with the high and the mighty. Most manufacturers agree that their products get instant attention and that the sales go through the roof if they hold a fashion show.

In Hyderabad, some sponsors prefer super models from other places, instead of opting for local models. "No sponsor is coming forward to take Hyderabad models for their shows. Everybody wants super models and title models. So I always try my best to convince my clients to take at least some local models for my show. "

The spin-off is that whenever there is a product or service endorsement via a fashion show, you get to see your favourite film stars, Page 3 idols and the city's high and mighty at close quarters if you are at the venue or on the telly if you happen to be elsewhere on the DDay.

According to Kaushal, few models in the city, including Sunitha, Vidya, Sipika, Vedika, Anu and Sadhana, can walk neatly and carry themselves well on the ramp. Among male models too, only four or five measure up to expectations. Local models usually charge between Rs 3,000 and Rs. 7,000, whereas models from Bengaluru charge between Rs. 8,000 and Rs. 12,000. Title models charge between Rs. 30,000 and Rs. 40,000, while super models charge between Rs. 40,000 and Rs. 60,000. "Modeling schools are there only to make money from innocent people. No modeling school will make the models stand at the national level. They do not even show how to walk perfectly on the ramp," he says.

Gadde Sindhura

"In 1998, there were a few professional models in Hyderabad like Roshan Surya (Gladrags finalist 1994), Neelam Chauhan and some more," says Kaushal, a fashion choreographer from Hyderabad. At that point of time, there were not many choreographers either.

Models Matter The models who actually walk the ramp to endorse a product or service count a lot. For instance, November 22nd was a day to remember for fashion pundits at f bar and lounge in Lumbini mall. The ambience was electrifying with an appreciative audience, comprising special invitees, P3 idols and media invitees, going into raptures. Nine models from various parts of the country floored the audience while showcasing designs by Jodha Akbar fame Uday Shankar. Kaushal of Hyderabad choreographed the show, with Sunny Khandelwal playing the perfect host. The designer presented three collections. After each display, there was free style dancing with the spotlight on a Brazilian. The models who carried the day include Aline (Brazilian super model), Smitha Rao (Bengaluru - Femina Miss India Finalist 2006), Sindhura Gadde (Chennai - Ponds Femina Miss India World 2005), Fhareena (Hyderabad - Gladrags finalist 2006), Sunitha (Hyderabad), Radha Brambhat (Femina Miss India 2008 and she is into international pageant also), Rajiv Singh (Gladrags Mr. World 2001), Yatin Sonic (Mr. Gladrags 2006) and Karan Rao (Gladrags Mr. India Mr.Physics, 2007).

Excerpts: Q. Some people call you the 'Showman' of Hyderabad. Why is it so? A. It's because of the media. Journalists notice a difference in my style of operations with regard to my business and personal matters. I believe that one needs to be different in every walk of life. Q. style?

What is your definition of

A. In my view, 'style' is undefined. It varies from person to person. I am very simple and down-to-earth in my business matters and very lavish and luxurious in my personal life. Q. Showmanship does not gel with business management. How do you reconcile them? A. I don't think they are different. My style is my business and my

business is my style. I love to do the things which others can't dare to even think of. I believe that a role model is one who does that which no one has attempted before. Q. affair?

Isn't showmanship a costly

A. Yes, of course. But, cost alone cannot bring charm and style. Subroto Roy (Sahara India) spends and Vijay Malya (Kingfisher) also spends. But, Vijay Malya is known as a stylish tycoon of the corporate sector. Style makes all the difference. Q. Nowadays 'Page 3' has become a projector for corporate honchos. How come you are not seen much on the glossy pages, boozing and dancing? A. Page 3 is meant for celebrities to inspire readers. In Hyderabad, it has become an 'adda' for people to booze,

Lion Y. Kiran is the quintessence of an entrepreneur who sees an opportunity, blazes and trail, and strikes it rich by capitalizing on the first mover advantage. He launched real estate ventures that have not only become the talk of the town, but also earned him cross-border recognition. His showmanship, his lavish style of living and his charitable activities have made him an enigmatic personality, while his group Suchirindia continues to make waves in various parts of the country and abroad. "Being passionate about business is the secret of my success," says Kiran in an interview with Hyderabad Josh.

dance, smoke and flirt. In other cities, we come across pages featuring celebrities who have climbed to great heights in their life. I don't want to drink and dance only to see myself on 'Page 3'. I sincerely believe that Page 3 is not meant for addicting youths to boozing and flirting.

An eye for class Kiran has a rich collection of rare and classy items that speaks volumes about his taste, style and stature. Among other things, he has: A cell phone made of gold with a sapphire. This Finland 'Vertu' company's model cost him Rs. 12 ½ lakhs.

Q. Some say you spend money like water for buying people. Any comments? A. It is true that I spend money, but it is not for 'buying' people. It is only to win the hearts of people. More than money, I spend my time, my patience, my love and my affection. I treat all my employees as my best friends. "Boss" is the word I hate even to listen.

Watches worth Rs. 50 lakhs, including a 'Rolex' that cost him 13 ½ lakhs.

Q. Considering your showmanship, some organizations seem to take undue advantage of you by seeking funds for sponsorships etc. How do you manage them?

Suzuki Intruder, an 1800 CC bike, worth of 14 ½ lakhs.

A. I am not here for cheap publicity. I don't throw money to all those who come to me with motives. When somebody approaches me for sponsorship of a program, I first determine whether the program would be useful in any way to the needy. Q. You started 'Suchirindia' group only a couple of years back. Still, you have taken it to great heights within a short time? What's the secret? A. I am personally well-known in real estate circles. That helped a lot in building the image of the company. Moreover, my style of advertisement is unique. My company's brochures, hoardings, TV and Radio ads are invariably of international standards. They easily draw the attention of quality-conscious customers. My motto is: Think big, dream big and achieve big results. Q. How do balance personal and business lives? A. I don't have segments like 'personal' and 'business'. I don't do business for money alone. Money can be made in many ways. I do business with passion, vision and zeal. A passionate businessman will definitely reach great heights. I think I am good at time management. Q. You started off as a small sales executive and went on to become a business tycoon. Can you identify the milestones on your great journey? A. I hail from a middle class family. My father late Venkateswarulu was an officer in the revenue department and my mother Pushpakumari worked as senior inspector in the co-operative department. Hanamakonda (Warangal district) is my native place. I did

my real journey started in the real estate field on Jaunary 8, 1994 in the Jana Chaitanya group as a sales officer. After 1 ½ years, some of us came out and started the 'Sreemithra Group' in 1996. There I started as a marketing manager and grew to the level of G.M of the company. While working there, I started my own company 'Suchirindia' in 2005. Now 'Suchirindia' has branched out with 17 sister concerns. Q. What percentage of your earnings do you keep aside for philanthropic causes? A. Charity and services are boundless causes. I spare a reasonable portion of my earnings for social service. I have adopted two villages -- Suraram in Mahabub Nagar district and Malkarpur in Nalgonda district. Nearly Rs. 1½ crore is spent on identified causes in these two villages. Every year we conduct talent search examinations for students in Class IV to Class X through our Viswa Bharathi Foundation. My aim is to raise awareness in rural India. We conduct this examination in 250 centers and give scholarships to students who come out in flying colours. Q. Can you tell us about the mega venture of yours in Colombo? A. It's the most prestigious step of Suchirindia group. It involved construction of 70- and 40-floor twin towers. It was inaugurated in November in the presence of Sri Lankan President, Prime Minister and the entire cabinet.

The triad of Samrats

I

t may appear antithetical to have three Samrats in one family, but not so in ANR's clan. In 1985, thespian Dr. Akkineni Nageshwara Rao introduced his son Nagarjuna to filmi duniya through the film 'Vikram.' Akkineni's fans then anointed Nag with the title 'Yuva Samrat'. On November 23, 2008, ace producer Dil Raju baptized Nagarjuna's son Nagachaitanya. Fans conferred the title 'Nava Yuva Samrat' on Nagachaitanya. For ANR who has given Tollywood evergreen hits, the title 'Nata Samrat' has been apt and ageless. The three Samrats in the family have their roles cut out for them. But, keen observers say the title 'Nava Yuva Samrat' is appropriate for Nagachaitanya, considering his age. They look askance at Nagarjuna's 'Yuva Samrat' title, given the fact that Nag is touching his fifties. When Hyderabad Josh posed this question point-blank, Nagarjuna revealed how young he still is, saying: "My name is Nagarjuna. I love myself as I am. I don't like any prefix or suffix to my name. It's my fans' choice. I want to see them happy. If you relate the word "yuva" to my age, I am no more a 'Yuva Samrat'. But, if you relate it to my spirit, then I am yuva at heart for ever."

Illeana? Please don't ask...

I

t started with Rs. 1 lakh for Illeana Desouza's debut in 'Devdas.' Today, she does not demand, but filmmakers are willing to pay her more than Rs 1 crore and that too with no strings attached. She still has no dates to spare for them. "Her diary has no gaps up to the end of 2009," says her manager Giri. Looks like Illeana, who has stolen the hearts of innumerable youth with her shapely figure and mesmerizing smile, will stay at the No. 1 position for years to come. This blue-eyed babe attained the top slot with the release of 'Pokiri' in which she paired with Mahesh Babu. Her stint in Bollywood did not yield her much. But, in Tollywood she is the reigning Queen. The twinkling star says Goa is her favorite place. Her hobbies are swimming and reading. Kajal, Hrithik and Saif are the artistes of her choice. Apart from black, she likes blue. The only problem, if any, with this sensitive beauty is that she won't easily confirm dates.

Unwinding

40

DECEMBER 2008

Fermented juice of grapes has appealed to man for ages. Rightly made, it can calm his frayed nerves and, in terms of imagination, take him to celestial heights. Grape varieties and the strains of yeasts used for fermentation determine the type of wine produced. In Hyderabad, there is a perceptible increase in the number of people who prefer wines. There are many liquor stores and swanky hotels that offer choicest wines. In fact, we see so many varieties that making a choice has become rather difficult. Hyderabad Josh sees through the bottle that brings cheers.

G

rapes ferment without the addition of sugars, acids, enzymes or other nutrients. But, wine is produced by fermenting crushed grapes using yeast. Yeast consumes the sugars in the grapes and converts them into alcohol. Because of the long-drawn processes involved, the origin of the grapes, climatic conditions etc., most wines taste differently. Therefore, when it comes to choosing a particular wine, people become diffident. It suddenly becomes a demanding task. They get overwhelmed by the sheer variety available. When you set out to buy or pick wine, go for ones that you know tastes good. Just because a merchant, friend or self-styled wine aficionado says a particular wine is good, it doesn't mean that you will enjoy every drop of it. Conversely, you need not shy away from a particular wine just because someone says don't touch it with a barge pole. If you like a Shiraz, does that mean you will like all Shiraz? No please! For all you know, you may have the wine taster in you waiting to be recognized. The ultimate judge of real good taste has to be you. So, get going.

A SIP FROM THE PAST Wine, as an alcoholic beverage made from fermented grape juice, has a rich history dating back to around 6000 BC. Scholars say it originated in areas near present Georgia and Iran. In Europe, wine is believed to have appeared at about 4500 BC in what is now Bulgaria and Greece. Wine consumption was very common in ancient Greece, Thrace and Rome. The Greek god Dionysus and the Roman equivalent Bacchus represented wine. Wine, in some form or the other, has played an important role in the history and literature of almost all civilizations.

You need to buy wine only from outlets that know how to take care of the prized liquid. It pays to buy directly from the winery's cellar door. Extreme heat or cold, exposure to direct sunlight, and extreme fluctuations in temperature can result in deterioration of wine. It is acidity in wine that makes your mouth water and your lips pucker. In right measure, it highlights all other features like fruit, spice and herbs. What you describe as tangy, sharp, refreshing, bracing, bright, crisp or zingy is actually the work of the acid. Whether a particular wine is light-bodied or full-bodied is contingent on its alcohol content, which is indicated on the label. Thus, 7.5% - 10.5% indicates light body, 10.5% - 12.5% medium body and 12.5% and over indicates full body. Tannins are vital ingredients in wines, especially red wines. It comes from the stalks, skins and pips of grapes. When you taste wine of the same variety side by side, you can start learning the subtle differences between a fullbodied wine and a light-bodied one and between a low-tannin variant and a high tannin wine. Many people know when they like a

Tips to choose WINE Decide the type: It could be white, red, sparkling, dessert or fortified wine. Go by your preferences. Some long for dry (absence of sweet) wine, while others prefer sweet wine. Determine the level of tannins. Tannins in a young wine produce a bitter, puckering taste on the palate. Pick the right palate: It could be 'short' vs 'long.' Palate determines how long the sensations of taste and aroma persist after you quaff the wine down. Know the acid levels: It could be low acid, high

acid or intermediate variant. At very high levels, the wine becomes tart and sour tasting. At low levels, the wine tastes flat. Storage points: You have a choice that ranges from no oak to heavy oak. Wines are often stored in oak barrels as a way to add to its flavor. Air tight containers: Make sure the wine is filled up to the neck of the bottle and that the cork is not jutting out of the bottle. There should be no signs of leakage.

particular wine. However, it becomes a difficult task to pinpoint why they like it. People also talk in terms of wine being fruity or sweet. Oaky describes the aroma or taste imparted to a wine by the oak barrels in which it aged. The terms toasty, vanilla, dill, cedary and smoky indicate the qualities of oak; while charred, burnt, green cedar, lumber and plywood describe its unpleasant side. Most of such questions can be answered by tasting wines, and then tasting more wine! You need to pay attention to what you taste. A comparative study of tastes is worth it. In any case, you don't need to be a professional wine taster to enjoy the drink. Take for example the Chardonnay grape. This one is dry white table wine resembling Chablis, but made from Chardonnay grapes. The popular variety is grown in Mornington Peninsula, Victoria and also in Margaret River, Western Australia. Tasted in quick succession, you may get a feeling that they both have little in common, but they are both made from Chardonnay grapes. Hyderabad has its own stock of wine lovers. Some of the French, Italian and Australian wine varieties have many buyers. Explore all of the wines available in the city. There is no point in sticking to just the wellknown varieties like Chardonnay or Shiraz. "Variety," they say "is the spice of life." You'll miss a lot in life if you don't experiment with whites like Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Gewurztraminer or reds like Zinfandel, and Pinot Noir. Try varieties from different regions, because local conditions determine the character of the wine. Know every type by heart, nay by tongue.

Hobby

A

quarium fish, which are of bewitching colours and multitudinous shapes, whet the curiosity of not only children but also adults. Many Hyderabadis cultivate the hobby of having aquariums with enchanting fishes that are regularly replenished to provide feast for the eyes. To cater to their requirements, on November 21st the Government of Andhra Pradesh launched Matsya Darshini on Road No 10 in Banjara Hills.

Memo Fish

Matsya Darshini showcases nearly 60 species of fishes that have been sourced from various parts of India and abroad. According to Mr. Aravind Kumar, Commissioner of Fisheries, the Rs 2-crore Mastya Darshini will be developed as a major attraction, particularly for children. Aquariums will be sold at the center at half the market price. The exotic varieties on display include Flowerhorn, Hooded Flowerhorn, Angelfish, Goldfish, American Jaguar, Parrot, Memo, Zebra, Green Terror and Silver Shark. From surface level to ocean bottom

Angel Fish

For the record, there are over 25,000 different types of fish in the world. Broadly categorized as jawless fish, cartilaginous fish and bony fish, they can be found in almost every type of underwater environment -- marine, fresh and brackish waters throughout the world and at all depths. Ranging in size from the .31-in. (7.9-mm) Paedocypris that lives in tropical swamps in Sumatra to the 45-ft. (14-m) whale shark, they are brightly colored. Many of them have shapes and patterns that serve as camouflage. Members of different species of fish tolerate water temperatures ranging from freezing to over 38째 C. For instance, the Antarctic icefish can survive in water below the freezing point because their blood contains anti-freeze chemicals. Sharks, salmons, electric eels and seahorses are other examples of fish. Many fishes stay in groups called schools. Some are solitary and congregate only for feeding and spawning. Fish may be carnivorous, herbivorous or omnivorous. Some fish are scavengers on lake or ocean bottom.

Close shave for Minisha

S

kimpily clad beauties look great in seashore film scenes, but the risk involved is equally great. The close shave Minisha had recently is a case in point. While shooting for Kidnap in Mauritius, she was required to take a dip in the sea. So engrossed was Minisha in her mid-sea performance that she did not realize that the currents had taken her a bit too far. The entire crew got scared out of their wits when all of a sudden the frames did not show the petite babe. It took some time for them to realize that the currents had pushed her two kilometers away from the coastline and that the water babe was blissfully unaware of the situation. After about 10 minutes, the crew could spot Minisha mid-sea. Finally, a speedboat rushed and pulled her to safety. Minisha's dripping display of her vital assets in Kidnap is only an indication of what she has in store for her fans in Maxim.

'Luck' smiles on Imran Khan

O

ne needs something more than talent to work with taare. For his home production 'Delhi Belly,' Aamir Khan has zeroed in on Imran Khan as the leading man. The latest heartthrob has already given a big hit on a platter to Aamir with 'Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na'. Imran did take time to give his nod, but it was mainly because of issues concerning dates. It turned out that Soham's Luck came in way of Imran's dates. But, with 'Luck' advanced, Imran could give his dates for 'Delhi Belly'. The movie, directed by noted ad filmmaker Abhinay Deo, is a sex comedy in which Imran plays a young foreignreturned guy.

Matrimony

Spliced in style G

oing by the way some high-profile Hyderabadis are celebrating marriages, it looks like the day is not far when people will spell matrimony with an additional 'e' to make it 'matrimoney' and thus distinguish this class of spenders. Some of these gala marriages are spread over a week. Each day of the jamboree is dedicated to a big event so that it becomes a real feast for the eyes of all participants. On November 5th the magic of royalty permeated the Imperial Gardens at Sikh Village in Secunderabad when Tollywood's upcoming star and industrialist Yashwant's sister Avanti married Nikhil. Many celebrities from Tollywood, industrialists, political leaders and government officials graced the function. T. Festivity

T

raditional Christmas celebrations in Hyderabad go beyond the dazzle of lights and shopping for presents. It is a time of family togetherness and convivial gatherings where love overflows. For the devout, the Christmas star symbolizes Jesus Christ, who is referred to as ‘the bright and morning star’. The Christmas star continues to adorn churches and houses, as part of traditional Christmas celebrations. Most Christians sing carols in praise of the Lord and spring-clean their minds, bodies, hearts and souls. One may not experience the thrill of sleigh rides or encounter a red-nosed reindeer in Hyderabad, but Santa will surely jingle the bells all the way. Christmas revs up the spirit, putting pure fun into the hearts of family members, friends and relatives who gather for fun-filled activities. The Christmas tree, among the oldest of Christmas traditions, has a pride of place. Children vie with one another to decorate it with fruits and cheese for display at a public place.

DECEMBER 2008

All churches in the city turn resplendent for the celebrations that normally extend to the New Year. One of the best traditions of Christmas is to see the wonderful Christmas lights at various places. Some of the markets in Hyderabad like Charkaman, Mitti-ka-Sher and Laad Bazaar offer fabulous bargains. Bakers and confectioners make the most delectable assortment of Christmas goodies.Popular Christmas carols symbolize everything that is good. They gather the family, bring joy, spread the word about Christmas, and make everyone feel the Christmas spirit. According to parish priest Fr. Medabalimi, carols, candles, cakes & cookies and cards are essential ‘Cs’, but Christ is the most important ‘C.’ The significance of Christmas is that it enjoins people to spend more and more time on prayers. Valentine Wilson, a journalist, says that Christmas brings the festive spirit. The birth of Jesus is a celebration of life because He is the son of God.

Jingle Bells provides people with Christmas lyrics that are about pure fun and enjoyment. Humming the melody of "Jingle Bells" brings peace to most people, as they begin to imagine snowflakes and angels, while hearing Christmas bells. Rev. K.K. Joseph of Don Bosco observes:“Christmas carries enormous significance for Christians, because it is true that Christmas is celebrated as the day of the Birth of Christ into this world. It also symbolizes a deeply noteworthy truth of the spiritual life. Jesus Christ is the very personification of Divinity. He was born at a time when ignorance, superstition, greed, hatred and hypocrisy prevailed upon the land. Purity was forgotten and morality was neglected.” One of the great comforts of the season is that people share a lot of things with those they love. Whether you are inviting a large group or just a few near and dear ones, the head of the family will certain perk up magic tricks in the menus.

Self-made

A woman who comes from a single-parent family and makes it big in the world of films makes a perfect role model. If such a role model is one who began as a child artiste, the story becomes even more engrossing. In a no-holds-barred interview to Hyderabad Josh, Hansika indicates the stuff she is made of.

DECEMBER 2008

Q. On your professional front is the going in line with your expectations? A. Basically, I don't expect anything. I take things as they come. By the grace of Almighty, I can claim that I am very prosperous. Q. We know that you are currently busy doing 'Maska'. What are the other films you have committed? A. I don't want to speak about my 'commitments' now. You will come to know of them soon. Q. If you are not forthcoming on your commitments, people may conclude that you are actually jobless. A. Let people think and speak whatever they want. I will talk only about what I am doing now. Q. You were hardly 15 when you acted in 'Desamuduru.' Did that affect your studies? A. No. I am conscious about my studies. On November 22nd I took XII standard examination through Podar International School, which has a tie-up with the Cambridge University. I did my XII Standard with Business Studies as one of my electives.

Hansika has wowed critics with her superlative performances in Escape from Taliban, Hawa, Koi Mil Gaya, Jaago, Hum Kaun Hai, Aabra Ka Daabra, Aap Ka Suroor, Money Hai Toh Honey Hai, Kantri(Telugu) and Bindaas (Kannada). Her roles as a child artiste in TV serials like Hum Do Hain Na, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Shaka Laka Boom Boom and Des Mein Niklla Hoga Chand provided her a solid foundation for efflorescence of her talents. Q.

A. It was quite accidental. My mother Dr. Mona is a noted skin and hair specialist and has many high-profile clients, including film stars. Aruna Iraniji is among them. She is close to our family too. She encouraged my mother to introduce me to the world of films and even took the initiative to promote me. That's how, at the age of 10, I started off as a child artiste in Escape from Taliban, which was released on February 14, 2003. Q. Can you tell us about your family? A. My mother Dr. Mona, my brother Prasanth and me‌ This is my family. Q. How about your father? A. I have a single parent. That's it. Q. How do you start your day? A. But I never overeat. Q. What are your hobbies? A. I cultivate things that help me lead a decent life. I do read a lot and listen to good music. I also watch good movies. Q. How do you maintain good human relations? A. Although my family consists of only three members, I have a large circle of friends spread across the globe. I keep in touch with all of them. Q. What is your opinion about contributing to charitable causes? A. People say that charity needs to be practically shown. It may not be possible to hug the entire world, but we can at least look around ourselves and rise to the occasion. I recently adopted 15 street children. I will look after their well-being and provide for their education and other basic needs. Q. What is your personal opinion about exposure? A. A star needs to act according to the demands of the script. If the script warrants exposure, I don't mind exposing myself. I am against meaningless and purposeless stripping. Q. You made it big in 'Desamuduru'. Why is it that you are not busy in Telugu film industry? A. Who said that I am not busy? I told you in the beginning about what commitments mean to me. I am very busy doing Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Hindi films. I am open to Malayalam as well. Q.Is your life in your hands or God's hands? A. I believe that my life is in the hands of God, but I am shaping it with my own hands

oted social worker and Ramon Magsaysay award winner Prakash Amte and his wife Mandakini Amte were felicitated in Hyderabad on November 28, 2008 by Suchirindia chief Lion Dr. Y. Kiron. Assembly speaker Suresh Reddy was the chief guest at the felicitation function, which was held at Ravindra Bharathi as part of Kiron's birthday celebrations. The Amtes were presented Sanjeevani Puraskar and Rs 50,000 in cash. Suresh Reddy hailed Kiron's contribution to business and social service. He commented that Kiron could be called "Suraram suryudu (sun of Suraram)" in light of his unremitting efforts to develop the adopted village. In response, Kiron said that wealth would increase manifold if people shared what they had with disadvantaged sections. In his acceptance speech, Prakash Amte said that he started social service when he was 22 in deference to his father's wishes. He appreciated his wife Mandakini's support in all his endeavours. The highlight of the function was a dance performance by deaf and dumb children.

Restoring the magic of story telling G

randmother's tales have a lasting impact, though today's digital generation is not all that lucky to savor them. With the idiot box becoming the sole companion, children get little exposure to stories that are told ingeniously for instilling values, fostering creativity and stimulating thought. As a way to bridge this gap, Odyssey recently organized 'Magic of Stories', a week-long carnival for kids that highlighted the art of storytelling, story writing, painting and story arrangement. The young participants not only learned to build stories, but also to read, write and paint stories that were once narrated by their grandmothers. The little ones also participated in workshops and activities tailored to hone their talents.

Campaign

P

erhaps every participant who took part sincerely in the Hyderabad Half Marathon and the Hyderabad 10K Run on November 30, 2008 must have awakened the Olympian in him or her. Such was the spirit of the event, which saw about 25,000 people take part with enthusiasm that oozed along the entire stretch of the run. Chief Minister Dr Y.S.Rajasekher Reddy, Assembly speaker Suresh Reddy, Film star Venkatesh, other film, police and political celebrities participated in this programme. The 10K Run started from the People's Plaza on the Necklace Road around the Hussain Sagar Lake and culminated at the People's Plaza, while the Half Marathon covered over 21 kms from the People's Plaza to Charminar and back. With attractive prizes totaling Rs. 15 lakhs up for grabs, the event drew professional long-distance talent from across the country. It all started as the Hyderabad 10K run in 2006, as a way to promote fitness, health and fun. Today, going by the level of people's involvement, it has come a long way and is pretty close to the organizers' plan to conduct the Half Marathon/Hyderabad 10K Run every year and subsequently the Full Marathon with the participation of elite runners from across the globe. The event, aside from turning the spotlight on Hyderabad, has fostered health consciousness among people. The event has taken a giant leap towards building a Healthy Hyderabad. Radha Realty Corp, a trend-setter in realty development, was the title sponsor of the event this year. The moving spirit behind the run is the Hyderabad 10K Run Foundation.
