Managing Director’s Note Summer is upon us, and it’s not news. It’s beyond sweltering and one wishes the air-conditioning in our offices would accompany us home. Tough luck, though. One can only hope for distractions and we at z Life have been literally sweating it out to compile the best of what could possibly detract this unbearable summer heat. So featuring in our food guide, the “King of Fruits” mango and the tongue-twisting little things you could do with it. We looked around Hyderabad and found our three favourite outlets for ice creams, lassis and faloodas. Our travel section will take you to eight destinations within India, where you can take off for a summer weekend. Our cover girl for this month is Ragini Dwivedi. Not many in Hyderabad would have heard of her, or would have remembered her from the Femina Miss South India pageant in 2009, where she won the 1st runner-up prize. That’s why we thought we needed a fresh face to rejuvenate the dry spell that summer has been threatening on us. As simple and straightforward as it gets, Ragini’s interview is a peek into the world of stark newcomer, alien to the film industry and the world of glamour. Even the gadget’s section is specially customized with the best and the coolest of gadgets to suit our summer needs. Our feature on the IPL is a post-Holi colourful hangover, spiked with a sarcastic and humorous take on what it has come to mean to be a regular IPL fan. There are some things that never wither with seasons, and one evergreen concern as such is that of Autism; a condition that most do not understand and therefore fear. Our feature on autism attempts to unravel the myths surrounding this condition. Again, summer is upon us and it’s definitely not news. We do not offer news. This month we dwell on the known and we sculpt it to suit our summer-dried tastes. Hope our distractions make for happy reading this summer.

“SYNCH”ING INTO THE INDIAN OCEAN Indian Ocean ‘s performance at the Hard Rock Café was something to die for and well most almost died, except not necessarily of the music, but of the fact that the Café had decided to stuff in as many people as they could. But the discomfort could not take away from the scintillating experience that it would eventually turn into. They played all our favorites including “Bandeh”, and “Kandisha”. The performance was sparkling enough for us to not be able to choose any single favorite performance, but one can with much difficulty still go with, “Marwa”, “Tum Tum Tana”, “Bulawa” and “Jhini”.

TAKING THEATRE TO THE STREETS On March 25, 2011, Nishumbita organized a series of street plays to commemorate the World Theatre Day on March 27. It was meant to be a programme meant to take a number of social issues such as child labour, price hikes, corruption, global warming etc. to people through the medium of theatre. Although the event was non-ticketed, the organizers passed around the hat for donations which later to be handed over to an orphanage.

ALLU ARJUN WEDS SNEHA REDDY

Allu Arjun’s wedding to Sneha Reddy has been the talk of Tolly town for a while now and the splendor that marked the event lived up to all the expectations that all this talk had raised. Allu Arjun is the grandson of Allu Ramalingaiah and the son of Allu Arvind, and Sneha is the daughter of Kanchara Chandrashekhara Reddy. The bride and the groom looked like they had stepped right out of the sets of one of Tollywood’s blockbuster family dramas. The bride’s attire consisted of a pink Dharmavaram pattu saree with gold and diamond threadwork and Allu Arjun had donned his avatar from his movie Varudu. However, there was a significant amount of talk about how the couple looked strikingly similar to Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai on their wedding day. Big-wigs from politics and filmdom including Narasimhan, Home minister Sabitha Indra Reddy, former Kadapa MP YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, Union minister Purandeshwari with his wife, Mohan Babu and his wife, state ministers Botsa Satyanarayana, Geeta Reddy, DK Aruna, PCC chief Srinivas, film personalities Prabhas, Ramcharan, Krishnam Raju couple, VV Vinayak, Ravi Babu, Roja, Sarada, MS Narayana, Tamil hero Suriya, Puneet Raj Kumar, Jayasudha, Raja, Koti, Mani Sharma, Venu Madhav, Ashwini Dutt, Balakrishna and wife, Dasari Narayana Rao and wife and Pawan Kalyan were seen gracing the occasion.

STATUES OVER STUDENTS? Telangana’s show of strength in the Million March did not exceed our imaginations as much as the destruction of the 17 statues of coastal Andhra leaders along the Tank Bund. While many condemned the demolition as some kind of manic mob aggression and compared it to that of the Babri Masjid, Telangana leaders and supporters refused to apologise in the face of popular pressure. The Telangana Employees’ Joint Action Committee demanded that the fallen statues should be replaced by statues of Telangana student martyrs. One is forced to wonder, whether we are now a state of people who can easily mourn the falling of statues (albeit illustrious historical figures of Andhra Pradesh), but remain silent to the deaths of students, who have given up their lives to a cause.

PRAYERS FOR JAPAN Waking up to the Tsunami in Japan brings back memories of darker days in 2004 when India, along with Sri Lanka, Maldives and Thailand was devastated by a Tsunami that took with it lakhs of lives. Attempting to even estimate the number of lives and the amount of financial damage that Japan may have incurred from the Tsunami is a futile exercise. One can only be awestruck by the images that are incessantly flashed across TV channels and say a silent prayer in the heart for all those who are in the midst of it. A 9.0 undersea megathrust earthquake shook the North of Japan at 14.46 Japanese Standard Time on Friday, 11 March, 2011. The earthquake sent out powerful waves of up to 10 metres high that washed away practically anything and everything that was to cross its way, and has brought the nation to its knees in the face of an impending nuclear disaster. Lets extend even the smallest support that we can and haul Japan and her people back to the glory that the world has known her for. 10

MMTS: FINALLY COMING OF AGE This is probably one of the best news that Hyderabad MMTS travelers have heard in a while. Smaller than the smallest toe nail, compared to the local train services of most metros in India, the MMTS has always been a cause for complaint for city-dwellers in Hyderabad who would like to travel cheap. Cheap tickets, coupled with a more often than not secure and comfortable travel, the MMTS fails where it should not—it is just not wellconnected or frequent enough for the 1.5 lakh travelers who use it regularly. This year’s Railway Budget however, has approved the MMTS phase II which has been in the pipeline for long enough to ease traffic congestion in the city. It is a Rs 641 crore project, three-quarters of which will be borne by the city, while the rest will be taken care by the railways ministry. The second phase will cut across 6 routes, covering an approximate of 106 kilometres. The Shamsabad airport will become more accessible to the city. The routes are as follows,

1.

Telapur-Patancheru,

2.

Secunderabad-Bollarum-Medchal,

3.

Falaknuma-Umadanagar-Shamshabad,

4.

GMR: CHARITABLY YOURS Grandhi Mallikarjuna Rao, promoter of the GMR group is definitely influenced by the philanthropic leanings of Azim Premji, who donated 2$ billion dollars towards education in 2010. Rao has also decided to forego his entire share in the GMR group, amounting to 340 $ million dollars, towards the GMR Varalakshmi foundation for charitable purposes. The said foundation operates out of 22 locations across the world and is dedicated towards the cause of education and towards offering vocational training in sustainable livelihood to the socially marginalized.

ANDHRA SCIENTISTS ON THE GLOBAL FRONT Eight Indian scientists were to be awarded the illustrious Norman Borlaung fellowship and Hyderabad can now proudly claim that two of them, Dr. P. Uday Kumar and Dr Dinesh Kumar are from the city. Both are employed with the National Institution of Nutrition in Secunderabad as deputy director, department of pathology and assistant director, department of toxicology respectively. Dr Uday Kumar is working in the area of food allergies, especially the allergy causing potentials of genetically modified food products food. Dr Dinesh Kumar is involved in the development of a process of testing on animals which will permit scientists to check the toxicity of genetically modified crops.

MILEY’S MARCH INTO THE MILLIONS

CAN’T “BERRY” IT FROM THE WORLD

So what do young millionaires do? Spend their millions and replenish them double-fold. Sources have reported that Miley Cyrus has recently invested $500,000 in partially owning a private jet. One can only surmise that it’s to avoid the mob when a celebrity like her is travelling in public flights. One might not be able to imagine the trauma, but one can only empathize. We have also read, Miley’s spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on shopping for just clothes. And that’s amounted to more than a million dollars in this year. And it’s just March!

WHEN ELLEN DE GENERES CALLED SELENA GOMEZ A LIAR Ellen de Generes called Selen Gomez a liar on her show. And it’s only fair that readers applaud her for saying aloud on TV, what we have been only guessing all this while; Justin Bieber is not “akin” to Gomez’s little brother. And Ellen did this with all the flair and humour one can expect only from her. She flashed a small clip on which Gomez is asked about her relationship status with Justin Bieber and she refers to him as someone akin to her “little brother”. 12

What is infinitely better than a supermodel in bed? A hunk of a French cheesecake going by the name of Oliver Martinez. We are talking about Halle Berry’s preferences here. A few months into her break up with her now exboyfriend, also the father of her daughter, 44 year old Berry is seeing (rather not being seen with) French actor Oliver Martinez. According to People Magazine, the liaison between Berry and Martinez is nothing short of a fervent affair..

PAPA LOHAN IN “MAJOR” TROUBLE

Michael Lohan was recently arrested for assaulting his exgirlfriend Kate Major and now we have the gory details on it. Kate Major was living in with Lohan. One night Lohan returned to his apartment, only to find that Major was busy packing her belongings to leave for good, upon which he “went ballistic” and began yelling at her. Following which, Kate turned her back to him and Lohan allegedly pushed her across the room and she hit her shoulder against the bedpost. Then Kate tried to call the police and Michael twisted a towel around her neck, threatening her that if reported to the police, he would cut himself with a razor and tell them she did it. Eventually, Kate drove down to the Sheriff’s station to report the assault.

“GAGA”-GING PLAGIARISM? And here we thought unique was just passé. Isn’t it the age of the hybrid? You take from one and all and you make it your own. Isn’t that the unique we have all been going Gaga over? Anyhow, this is the second time that Lady Gaga is being accused of plagiarism (one would still like to call it fusion-cum-hybrid-cum- crossbreedetc). This time around a South Korean girl Band called SNSD has alleged that Gaga’s hit single “Born This Way” sounds similar, too similar to their hit “Be Happy”.

BRITNEY, BACK-UP DANCERS AND BOOZE: NO WAY!

Now what’s a bad combo? Britney, booze and her back-up dancers. Britney Spears’ producers have written up a contract that takes all precautions to prevent Britney from being seen anywhere near any drugs, alcohol or controlled substances. The contract also specifies that the dancers themselves maybe subjected to drug tests themselves, which they fail or refuse to take may lead them to be fired. The producers have definitely taken Britney’s history seriously enough.

IT’S RENEE-ING TEARS AND BULLOCK’S THERE FOR CONSOLATION Renee Zellweiger and Bradley Cooper broke up last week and who has Zellweiger chosen for company and advice? Sandra Bullock of course is providing the much needed shoulder. And considering that she herself has recently recovered from a much publicized break up, it does not come as too much of a surprise. But with any luck, work should be able to take her mind off the pain that comes with such difficult times.

JUSTIN BIEBER, RIHANNA & U2’S SING FOR JAPAN It’s not the first time that musicians have come together during a time of crisis and this time it’s the odd threesome of Justin Bieber, Rihanna and U2 who are cutting an album with Universal Music to raise money for the disaster relief in Japan. Once the album is done by the end of this week, it will be distributed on a digital-only basis, whereby all proceeds whatsoever will go to the Japanese Red Cross.

BIG B CAN’T GET ENOUGH OF JAYA BACCHAN

Recently, the first couple of Bollywood have completed shooting for an ad campaign for famous jewellery brand Tanishq. It’s been a decade since the senior Bachchan’s have shared screen space and that was for Karan Johar’s blockbuster, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham. The recent ad shoot in fact seems to have reignited the Big B’s professional interest in his wife, or so it appears from his Tweet where he expressed his desire to work with Jaya Bachchan again.

Preity Zinta has decided to opt for the Dil Chahta Hai perm that got her so famous in 2001 and this time it’s for her role as the host of Colors’ Guiness World Records—Ab India Todega. One can only guess and one can only hope that she finally got tired of the safe and straight hair that she’s been sticking to for almost the whole of the last decade.. It was time she took the twisted path. And apparently she’s not regretting it either, considering the number of compliments she’s been getting on her new-old look.

PERMED TO BE PREITY

MUNNI, SHEELA AND NOW SHEETAL! The last year two of the biggest hits in item songs were “Munni badnaam hui” and “ Sheela ki Jawani”. Following in the footsteps of the trend that these songs have boosted, even regional filmmakers have started cutting special item songs for their films. The most

LEARNING LESSONS Well, not everyone is like Aamir Khan; i.e. a proud school drop-out, who does not need to go back and finish, because he does not believe in formal education in the first place. But Deepika Padukone has signed up for a correspondence course and has vowed to see the end of it, while Prachi Desai can only wish that she can eventually go back to college and not have to face the “unfortunate”” and “embarrassing” detail that she is a drop-out. Others like Sunidhi Chauhan do not necessarily regret making the choice but would someday like to go back and finish studying.

recent in line is the upcoming film Sheetalbhabhi.com. Bhojpuri actress Heena Rehman will bare what it takes for an item song in the forthcoming film called Sheetalbhabhi.com.

CZAR FALLS FOR KAIF

Czar, Farah Khan’s two-year old son has apparently fallen for Katrina. This happened on the sets of Tees Maar Khan where he was a regular visitor with his siblings. One of the days, he was playing with Katrina on the sets when the latter offered her cheek for a kiss. Though Czar is usually annoyed by Farah’s kisses on his lips, he took the initiative to avoid Katrina’s cheek and planted a big wet one on her lips. And this happened twice. Considering that it happened one too many times, readers can easily suspect that something is definitely going on between the two. Well, Kat needs to add a new cute fan in her fan list.

A SEQUEL TO KAANTE?

The fact that Kaante was heavily “inspired” by the Hollywood cult hit Reservoir Dogs, did not stop it from becoming Bollywood’s very own cult hit. And in that case, it’s definitely good news that Kaante is about to get a sequel for itself, except one wonders what will it be a rip-off of this time around. According to sources, the film will be produced by Sanjay Dutt productions and Pritish Nandy Communications. However, it will be a different director this time around calling the shots on a cast, which is more or less the same from what it had been in the “original” Kaante. So we won’t be seeing any of Sanjay Gupta at least.

ASHA FOR BIPASHA IN MURDER 2?

GENELIA AND JOHN: ALMOST MARRIED! So Genelia and John almost got married on the sets of Vipul Shah’s Force. They were shooting for a wedding scene which required them to take the saat pheres. So the actors and the pandit were so caught up in the scene that John and Genelia almost completed the last set of pheres. Someone industrious from the sets had to stop the couple from completing it, lest they really got married. Wonder what Bipasha would have to say about that.

Deepika Padukone may have dashed all hopes for Bipasha when she got selected for the item number in Dum Maro Dum, but Bipasha’s probably just bagged one for herself for the film sequel to Murder,Murder 2. According to Bipasha’s spokesperson, “Right now, she has no dates for the item number’s shoot. However, Bipasha would love to work with the Bhatts again, and yes, if the shoot works out during the time she is available, she will most definitely be doing a dance number in Murder 2.”

FINALLY DONE WITH?

Looks like Chiranjeevi is afterall going to have his final say. In 2007 when his daughter Srija eloped with her college sweetheart Sirish, he could manage very little in terms of obstructing what eventually became inevitable. They got married and had a child as well.

RAJNI FALLING SHORT OF WOMEN?

Year 2011, the romance of elopement has apparently lost much of its sheen. Srija has filed a police complaint for harassment against her husband and in-laws. The complaint also specifies that Sirish had forced Srija to register assets, which originally belonged to Chiranjeevi’s family to his name. She alleges that throughout the years that she had been married, her husband and in-laws were an incessant cause for her anguish. They would force her to bring money from her family, and the only reason she put up with this torture was because she was concerned about the well-being and future of her child. But now waters had risen too high and she was forced to take this difficult step.

Actresses seem to be shying away from Rajnikanth’s trilingual epic Raana, Initially, Madhuri and Asin were supposed to act in it, but both of them dropped out. Madhuri had family commitments, but Asin’scold shoulder has remained unexplained. In the second round of casting Deepika Padukone, Rekha and Vidya Balan were finalized, but the latter two dropped out. Rekha was not happy with the remuneration offered to her and the director refused to oblige Vidya Balan with a final script. What happened to the so-called legend that actresses would kill to act with Rajni.

ILLEANA: AN EXPENSIVE AFFAIR

Illeana’s comeback to Kollywood with the film Nanban is going to cost her director Shankar quite heavily. She initially demanded a whopping Rs 2 crore, which would have become the highest ever paid remuneration to any actress in the South. The shocked producers, Gemini Film Circuit, finally managed to negotiate it down to Rs. 1.5 crore. Nanban is a remake of the Bollywood hit 3 idiots, in which Illeana will play the role of Pia, originally played by Kareena Kapoor.

MUJHE AUNTY MAT KAHO NA “Spent the afternoon with one of my most favourite people lakshmi aunty good home food and lots of talking ”—Shruti Hasan on Twitter Shruti Hassan has apparently been used to referring to Manchu Lakshmi as aunty on the sets of Anaganaga Oka Dheerudu. One isn’t sure if Manchu is comfortable with it on a one-to-one basis. Perhaps he is, considering it hasn’t stopped him from inviting Shruti over for lunch and talk. But one also hears that his nickname has not reached public speculation all this while, primarily because of his initiative. The reference on Twitter,

SHRIYA UP TO DATING RANA?

It seems that our speculations about Shriya dating Rana are completely baseless. Well, one cannot completely blame us now,can theyconsidering the “couple”have been spotted together intermittently in Hyderbad and on holiday in Goa. And what does Shriya have to say about it? “I met Rana when he was a student. I cherish friendly relationship with his family for eight years. I like them so much and they do respect me a lot. Except for friendship, there is nothing between me and Rana,” We just have your word, Shriya !

seems completely unwarranted though and Manchu has been calling Hasan for the required damage control, but she was out of reach for the longest time.

MANCHU MANOJ TO EXPLORE VERSATILITY Manchu Manoj and Shriya Saran are to act in Producer D.S. Rao’s new film, which was launched on Monday at Rama Naidu Studios in Hyderabad. According to sources, Manchu’s character, who begins as a happy-go-lucky fellow eventually becomes responsible enough to save two lives. It will require Manchu to explore a wide range of emotions and acting skills. Readers will sure look forward to the treat.

SIMRAN MOM AGAIN! Simran is mother to her second son. She delivered a healthy baby boy in a hospital in Chennai. After having created waves in Kollywood and Tollywood for more than a decade, Simran married her childhood sweetheart Deepak in 2004 and had her first son in 2005. She took a long break from movies and very recently made a comeback. She’s been giving us fans a lot of reasons to be happy for her. Wishing her and her son good luck and good health!

SPLASH IN SUMMER Splash had probably named itself, keeping in mind the summer fashion concerns of the elite in Hyderabad. Splash has always boasted of catering to the widest variety of tastes that do the rounds of the city, and it has also been known for morphing itself to the demands of the drastic changes of the seasons of the city. 18

life_aprl_Final.indd 18

3/30/2011 12:18:58 PM

No wonder that Splash this summer seems to be doing some of the best in summer fashion for the city. It has been a fashion brand that made its mark in nations, where the weather has always inclined to be hotter, more than anything else, for instance the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman and Jordan. This summer Splash is all about varied and asymmetric cuts, coupled with bright colours, polka dots, patched etc. The wide range of brands housed by Splash, include Zync, 2Extremes, Nexus and Scarlett, all of whom boast of their individual contributions to this year’s summer style, and each is distinct from the other. Considering each brand caters to a specific lifestyle, there’s a wide variety that one can choose from. There is the set of skimpy summer ensembles for the fun-loving pub-hopper who is willing to experiment with her style, or not. Then you have the usual set of T-shirts in bright colours that detract the hot summer sun. Splash has always been known for its excess in bling and not like summer concerns have made them do away with it. So those of you, who still can’t do without the glitter, Splash is one place where you can have your fill of bling. As far as the men are concerned, Splash is planning to Bohemianise them. So this summer, dive in and Splash yourself with the colours of summer. Trust us at Hyderabad Life; there will not be any looking back! 19

4.SOME HAIR!

This summer we are wearing shades, not just because the sun is too bright, it’s because you’ll be wearing the brightest and the jazziest colours in all kinds of loose asymmetric shapes. Take your pick: oranges, bright, fluorescent greens, yellows, electric blues, purples; there’s really no end to it. Lock up all your dark, dreary, heart-rending colours and go down the Bohemian way.

Bobs, fringes, layers and crops should be the choice for this year’s summer. Or you could experiment a little and adopt the 80’s big hairdo. Try to keep your look natural and refrain from trying too hard. Oil and shampoo your hair well, keep it light and you won’t always need t keep it tied up. The best option of course is to completely chop it off.

2.BAG IT RIGHT

5.SCANTILY SUMMERY

Once you have brought out all your colours for your clothing, don’t kill it with your dull, dreary leather or worse, quasi-leather bag. Go all shapeless and colour-burst on your bag. Paisleys, patchwork, cottons is the way to go. For this summer, bring out that quintessential jhola.

Your choice of lingerie should be strictly limited to cottons. Now, what colour you would prefer to choose depends completely on your personal “desires.” We at Hyderabad Life we would prefer to see you (if you choose to show i.e.) in turquoises, blues, whites and laces. But cotton is what we would prefer to take off.

6.SUMMER SHADES 3.SHOE AWAY THE HEAT Let your feet breath. Stay away from anything that covers your feet. Socks are an absolute no-no. Choose only slippers, flip-flops, strap-ons and slipons. They‘ll go with the rest of you that is already bursting with summer colours. Walkers can opt for floaters that come practically in all kinds of colours and shades.

Hide your eyes well form the summer sun with as-large-as-it-gets shades. Keep it large, not just for the sake of fashion, but also for function’s sake. You could opt for these really funky star-trek glasses that we noticed. They come in all shades and colours.

GET AS CRAZY AND COLOURFUL AS YOU WANT THIS SUMMER AND STEP OUT IN THE SUN LIKE ALL THE WORLD WOULD CARE TO SEE IS YOU!

I

have become as ardent a fan of the IPL as anyone else. For the first two years I watched most matches, memorised table positions and meticulously kept track of purple, orange and salary caps. Indeed, one of my most memorable incidents from the IPL came in the second season. It involved the Knight Riders’ Mortaza, who roared down the pitch, looking every ounce the super value $600,000 buy he was, swung his bowling hand with venom, and handed a replacement bat to David Hussey, who was playing at the time. Mortaza then returned to pavilion to get the water bottles. However, I am deeply aggrieved to say that IPL 3 was quite boring.

There have been a few memorable moments, no doubt. Who can forget that moment when Modi tweeted something about Shashi Tharoor that was insidious. And then Tharoor tweeted something about Modi that was hilarious. And then Modi tweeted something about Tharoor that was libelous. It simply doesn’t get this exciting with Test matches. But otherwise the tournament has been a never-ending relay of Set Max anchors, forgettable matches and desperate product placement. Nevertheless, the IPL is way too entertaining than the “Comedy Circus” on Sony, I mean yeah I can see Shweta with her creamy thighs and huge

cleavage any day, but I would prefer doing that at the dead end of the night, not with my dad beside me drooling over her at prime time. I would rather watch Kings XI get a rare win and Preity giving some bouncing hugs. And who says that players and owners of IPL don’t have good humour, the IPL has admitted to pulling off the greatest April Fools’ joke of all time - the Kolkata Knight Riders’ victory against the Deccan Chargers on the - you guessed it - 1st of April. Well, here we are knocking at the fourth edition of the IPL and waiting to see more of Preity Zinta’s bouncing hugs and more of Shilpa’s leg shots in addition to ambassadors like Deepika and also a warning about the Liz being hurled at us!

This time last month

With the number of teams being increased from 8 to 10, what can we expect this year? More exotic cheer leaders for sure, more set of controversies, more shakes, bounces and hugs, frequent increase in dumb statements from the owners of the teams , more SLAPS hopefully, and yeah in between some cricket too. But, honestly the ten owners having spent a whopping 785 crores between them to buy the players almost felt as if they were buying slaves in the middle east and considering another 1000 crores was spent by the sponsors and the advertisers, there would be some sort of seriousness which might creep in somewhere. The funniest part of the auction and which I am sure most of us were wondering about was, Pune as a franchise is fine, but where the hell did Kochi creep in from apart from the other funny part when Sourav Ganguly was desperately trying to sell himself on air; lets have a heart though, he changed the thinking and outlook of the Indian team in the early 2000’s. The downside of the tournament was that none of the Pakistan players were

placed on the table and seriously, we missed them in the last edition and I think we are going to miss them in this edition too; their passion for the game does add more colour to the game. Remember Sohail Tanveer’s bowling performance in the first edition when he helped them win the trophy then. So who’s going to win this 2011 edition? On paper, Chennai Super Kings are the best team considering they managed to retain most of their top players although that was marred by controversy, followed closely surprisingly by Pune and Mumbai, though in this format too, no one is a favorite, look at Deccan Chargers, there’s was the most powerful team in the first edition and they didn’t even look like they would win a single match! It is also the month when betting becomes more serious than cricket itself, with bets already being placed to 5 times of the money actually involved in the tournament, and since Pakistan is not involved ,we won’t have any minister blurting out in the open and asking players not to get involved in

match fixing. That was a funny moment during the world cup. On a serious note, I hope none of the matches get fixed. It’s going to take the fun out of this unpredictable format of the game and with the cricketers already getting the value for their money, it sometimes becomes difficult to fathom how can they fall for it? So let’s sit back and enjoy the Indian Paisa League, with everyone ready to chip in the moolah and the excitement and the babes with some sort of cricket, though I hope I don’t have to see Shahrukh dancing with kids from the owners’ balcony. That’s one thing I really won’t look forward to; it reminds me of Michael Jackson for some reason. I think that this edition would be far more exciting than the previous ones, more number of teams , more players and more controversies. Looks like we are all set to be entertained by a Bollywood masala block buster. I wonder who’s going to emerge the Chulbul Pandey for this movie. Let the best team win, and may you get to see some real serious leg glances!

THE BULL: ALL CHARGED AND RAGING!!

Shads

The 4th season of IPL promises to be a completely new experience. With 10 teams in the foray instead of 8 and with major shuffling of players, every team has mixed and matched players trying to present the best combination on the field, all this while trying desperately to stay within the bracket allotted by BCCI. It is still too early to state which of the franchise got their strategy right. Nothing can be concluded till the performances are out there in the middle of screaming fans but ask a Deccan Chargers fan and he is excited enough about the new team. Though it hurts that Gilly who got us the cup in the second edition would not lead us anymore, we do have a line-up that could very well make the 4th edition a nawabi affair. Hyderabad life brings you the players that make the formidable side this season. Kevin Peter Pietersen Born : June 27, 1980 Batting Style : Right-hand bat Bowling style : He is one of the most stylish and innovative batsmen in the world. He can turn the match around as easily as he switches his grip to suddenly become a lefthander, after the ball is bowled. Injuries are a major concern but could very well lead the side as well.

Kumar Chokshanada Sangakkara Born : October 27, 1977 Batting Style : Left-hand bat Bowling style : Captain of the Sri Lankan team, he is one of the best Wicket-keeper batsmen in the world. Known for his consistency, he could also be named the captain. Brings amazing strength and stability to the middle order.

Dale Willem Steyn Born : June 27, 1983 Batting Style : Right-hand bat Bowling style : By far the best fast bowler in the planet. Spearheads the South African bowling attack and is capable of destroying any batting line up and the best part is that he does it pretty often. Cameron Leon White Born : August 18, 1983 Batting Style : Right-hand bat Bowling style : The Australian T20 captain is a specialist in this format. Known for his aggressive clean hitting and his dynamic fielding, he is capable of sending any bowler over the ropes. The batting line up suddenly seems much deeper with him in the squad.

Jean-Paul Duminy Born : April 14, 1984 Batting Style : Left-hand bat Bowling style : He’s the next big thing for South Africa. He brings amazing depth and balance to the batting line up and can hold on to one side of the wicket in tough conditions and can accelerate at will when required. He is one of the best fielders in South Africa. Do we need to say more? Michael John Lumb Born : February 12, 1980 Batting Style : Left-hand bat Bowling style : The one day specialist from England has proved it time and again that on his day, no score is too big for him to chase down. The strength and balance that he provides the already strong batting lineup assures us that Deccan Chargers mean business.

Ishant Sharma Born : September 02, 1988 Batting Style : Right-hand bat Bowling style : Right-arm fastmedium Who can ever forget the way he rocked the Australian batting line up in their own backyard. He has been instrumental in the recent surge of the Indian national team. Unfortunately left out of the world cup, he would be rearing to go out and prove that it was a mistake.

Shikhar Dhawan Born : December 05, 1985 Batting Style :Left-hand bat The dynamic opener is a huge assest to the team. He is certainly one local player who is capable of out-shining any overseas player. Having opened with the Legend, Tendulkar himself, he is sure to have gained enough knowledge to take any bowlers to the cleaners.

Juan Theron Born : July 24, 1985 Batting Style : Right-hand bat Bowling style : Right-arm mediumfast What Rusty can do to a team very few players can i.e. provide match winning balance to the team. The medium pacer is a useful wicket taker and is no schmuk with the bat either.

Pragyan Prayash Ojha Born : September 05, 1986 Batting Style : Left-hand bat Bowling style : Slow left-arm orthodox The local boy brings a lot of variety thanks to his left arm off-spin and the angle that it creates. He has the ability to flight the ball and land it at the same nagging line and length ball after ball. The highlight of his career was when he got the Indian team captain twice in the first edition.

Amit Mishra Born : November 24, 1982 Batting Style : Right-hand bat Bowling style : Legbreak He is one of the last genuine bowlers who practice the art of leg spinning. Extremely potent with his flight and accuracy, he has googlies in his kitty that can surprise any batsmen. He has a nasty habit of running through the Middle order and the lower order at a blitzing rate.

The other players who complete the side are Akash Ashok Bhandari Playing Role : Bowler Anand Rajan Playing Role : Bowler Ankit Sharma Playing Role : Bowler Arjun Yadav Playing Role : Batsman Ashish Reddy Playing Role : All-rounder Bharat Chipli Playing Role : Batsman

You were the 1st runner-up at the 2009 Femina Miss South India, and now you are about to hit the screens with your 7th film. It must have been an interesting journey. It was a sudden shift, really. I started modeling when I was eighteen. After the pageant, I just went back to modeling and that is when I got flooded with these film offers. I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do about them, considering I had no prior acting experience, or training in dance. But then, I figured that since there were so many people who thought I had the potential, I had to give it a shot. And from there you have gone on to win awards for Best Debutant and Best Actor. So it must have been a hell of an experience, considering you were an absolute grrenhorn then. Very much so! Can you imagine? Me, all of eighteen and a half, a tom-boy, completely into basketball and other kinds of sports. I walked into a random party and got noticed by none other than Prasad Bidappa who told me, that if I was willing to put my body through some serious sculpting, my features would be appropriate for a career in modeling. Then suddenly, I lost oodles of weight and not too long later I was walking the ramp for the first time. Initially modeling was just a hobby for me. So how was your first day on the ramp? It was embarrassing! I have seen videos of it, and I kid you not, I was walking like a man; a man in a cocktail dress.

life_aprl_Final.indd 34

And now tell us a little about your experience in your first film? Once I started getting these offers, right after the pageant, I did not want to take it easy in terms of the projects I would eventually commit to. By then, I had made up my mind, that if I was going to do films, I needed to debut with something that would be a big enough hit to pull me through for future projects. And I was lucky enough, to get an offer with Sudip in Veera Madhakari. I didn’t know a word of Kannada, and I was struggling a lot. I was made to feel totally comfortable. I had lots of fun. I would ask possibly the craziest questions. I was curious about everything. But I would have to give all credit to Sudeep, my first co-star as well as director, for all that I have learnt till now. You come from a background that has had practically nothing to do with films. Do you think that a lack of training or even familiarity has been a setback for you? Not at all. It is true that acting schools are responsible for teaching you certain very important technical aspects and skills. But I would still think that learning on the job is a lot better. But I have also been lucky that way. Till now I have managed to work only with top-notch directors and in immensely successful films such as Kempegowda and Veera Madhakari. As a result I have been exposed to a lot.

Bollywood on your mind? Definitely. But as I said earlier I want to tread softly and not hurriedly, especially since Bollywood is a different kind of space altogether. I feel one has to be really careful in the kind of choices they make. I don’t make it any different for myself. What kind of image would you like to project on-screen and off-screen? As far as images are concerned, I strongly believe that fans have a lot to do with it. At the moment Kannada fans see me as this bubbly glamorous girl. But film-wise, I would like to don as many roles as possibly. I would like to keep a good balance between my performance and my glamour. Would Hyderabad see you very soon? They should be able to! I have been getting a lot of offers from Tollywood and I have been looking at a number of scripts. If everything works out well, I should be seen in a Telugu film soon. How have your parents reacted to the course of your life? They have been very supportive. My father has always been cool with what we have wanted to do, as long as we were putting in the best we had. And my mom has actively participated in my career. She is practically my manager. Nowadays, she’s even begun to look like one.

Hyderabad of the lore

THE REGALIA CALLED HYDERABAD

Shivaranjani Reddy

The Nizam had a “lift” too! A CENTURY AND A QUARTER AGO THE NIZAM OF HYDERABAD WOULD USE A LIFT TO CLIMB UP AND DOWN AND TO AND FROM THE FIRST FLOOR OF HIS ROYAL PALACE, THE PURANI HAVELI. SOUNDS UNCONVINCING? FOR A MAN AHEAD OF HIS TIMES, A LIFT IS NOTHING MORE THAN A UTILITY. AND THE NIZAM VI, MIR MAHBOOB ALI KHAN, HAD INDEED USED A LIFT, A RARE EVENT IN THOSE DAYS IN THE PRINCELY STATES OF INDIA. THE NIZAMS OF HYDERABAD WERE THE RICHEST OF THE RULERS IN THE BRITISH EMPIRE AND WHEN IT CAME TO LUXURY THEY WERE FAR AHEAD OF THEIR FELLOW RULERS. The wooden lift of Mir Mahboob Ali Khan is now 125 years old. It still adorns the beauty of the Purani Haveli, and now forms part of the famed The Nizam’s Museum. What’s wonderful about this lift is that the machine is still operational and one can use it, like the Nawab, even today. The lift is manually operated. The Nizam used to walk into the wooden lift, his assistants then pulled the strong rope attached to it. Lo! The wooden lift goes up and an automatic lock stops it on the first floor. There’s a safety door too to prevent accidental fall. The wooden lift is probably the only one in India still in working condition. It was designed specially for the Nizam by R. Way Good Company Limited Engineers, London. The lift works on wheels with the help of a rope. Since there are pulleys attached to the lift, manual operation is quite easy. No tedious efforts are really needed to pull the lift. According to the HEH The Nizam’s Museum, the lift was regularly used by Mir Mahboob Ali Khan during his life time, as well as by the Nizam VII, Mir Osman Ali Khan, during his visit to the palace. Incidentally, Mir

Osman Ali Khan was born in Purani Haveli but his father had shifted base to the Falaknuma Palace later. Mir Osman Ali Khan did not stay in Falaknuma Palace and instead selected King Kothi Palace as his official residence. He used to visit Purani Haveli occasionally and during this time, he used the lift. The wooden lift can carry as many as eight people. The Purani Haveli was constructed by Nizam II, Ali Khan Bahadur, for his son and Nizam III, Sikandar Jah. It is after Sikandar Jah that Secunderabad is named. Originally Secunderabad was under the British control, later a part of it was handed back to the Nizam during the rein of Mir Osman Ali Khan. Though the Purani Haveli was constructed for Sikandar Jah, he did not choose to stay there. He preferred the Chowmahalla Palace (Khilwat). The Purani Haveli did not get a royal guest until Nizam VI, Mir Mahboob Ali Khan, decided to make it his official residence. The Nizam VI had got the special wooden lift erected to facilitate his movements between the two floors

of the palace. We have already read in the previous issue that Purani Haveli also boasts of the world’s largest wardrobe, belonging to the Nizam VI. Talking of lifts and the Nizams, one is reminded of the famous Greek discoverer Archimedes. It is said that Archimedes had used a sort of wooden lift or elevator for his movement and to move goods. The Arabs too utilized the technique during their rule in Spain where heavy objects were lifted to an elevated point using manually operated lifts. Thus the history of lift goes back to at least 2000 years, though modern elevators emerged only in the 20th century, making our lives even easier. Think of the royal regime of the Nizam and the glory and pride associated with him, when people looked in awe and wonder as he climbed up and got down the two floors of the Purani Haveli in a wooden lift. The Nizam VII, Mir Osman Ali Khan, however did not show much interest in lifts. During his regime, power-operated lifts had already made their presence felt.

HYDERABAD OF YORE

Did You Know? The Nizam had a penchant for clocks. He imported clocks from England. Clock towers were also set up for the benefit of people. Some of the rare clocks of the Nizam are still present at Falaknuma Palace, Chowmahalla Palace and the Nizam’s Museum. The lovely Falaknuma Palace derives its name from the Persian words, Falak (sky) and Numa (view or mirror). The palace is located atop a hill and at night it mirrors the sky, thus gaining the name, Falaknuma or Mirror in the Sky. The Nizam had hired eminent engineer Sri Visveswarayya to build Himayatsagar and Osmansagar reservoirs to contain the Musi floods and solve drinking water problems in Hyderabad city. Captain Claude Clerk taught English to young Nizam VI, Mir Mahboob Ali Khan. Claude took over the responsibility of education of Mir Mahboob Ali Khan when he was just 10 years old. It was because of Claude, the Nizam VI was known for his flamboyant dress sense and love for hunting. The Nizam was modern in his outlook. The staircase in Falaknuma Palace stands without any pillars or supporting columns. Made entirely of Italian marble, the staircase that connects the ground and the first floors of the imposing palace stands as silent testimony to the architectural marvels of the Asaf Jahis. It stands with the support of balustrades and banisters.

REVIEW

WORLD INVASION: BATTLE LOS ANGELES Cast: Aaron Eckhart, Ramon Rodriguez, Bridget Moynahan and Michelle Rodriguez Director: Jonathan Liebesman Producer: Jeffrey Chernov, Ori Marmur and Neal H. Moritz Music: Brian Tyler The movie provides you with amazing graphics and nothing more. Almost all the scenes revolve around the cross fire between aliens and the U.S. Marines. The story revolves around a platoon which needs to find its way to a certain police station to rescue a few civilians. The characters are flat stereotypes, one so frequently encounters in Hollywood cinema, which includes an Asian, an African, a Latin American and a damsel in distress. The movie could have earned a few stars if a little bit of time and thought would have been spent on its narrative. Scenes that would otherwise have been breath-taking, such as the destruction of the city after the attack were permitted just a couple of extremely mediocre frames. And the aliens were just ugly, and not even impressionably ugly.

TANU WEDS MANU Cast: Madhavan, Kangana Ranaut and Kangana Ranaut Director: Aanand Rai Producer: Shailesh R. Singh and Sanjay Singh Music: Krashana

Marketing think tanks certainly knew the potential of this movie to risk taking the cricket world cup head on. And it seems their strategy was spot on. The plot revolves around Manu who comes to India to have an arranged marriage. Though he has been in London for 12 years working as a doctor, his core values remain totally Indian. On the other hand, Tanu hails from Kanpur and had studied in Delhi and is more inclined towards all that is Western. She is completely against the idea of an arranged marriage, plus she is in love with Jimmy Shergill. Now will this rebellious brat brave all odds to have her way in marriage is just about anyone’s guess.

DONGALA MUKA Cast: Ravi Teja, Charmme, Lakshmi Manchu and Prakash Raj Director: Ram Gopal Varma Producer: Ram Gopal Varma Music: Amar Mohile The one thing that works in favor of the film is its run time. Apart from that, the movie clearly does not justify the hype it created. It is commendable that Ram Gopal Varma continues to try new stuff and was honest enough to accept that this was an experimental movie, but does that mean that it should not cater to a common man at all? The movie which is shot with Canon 5D cameras calls for pretty shaky scenes that give an impression of a home video than a professionally shot full length movie. The plot revolves around a couple played by Ravi Teja and Charmme who end up in a resort in a deserted place which is run by 3 creeps, after their car breaks down on a highway. Soon they discover that they are caught in a dangerous situation. How they find a way out of that place sums up this story.

PREVIEW

RIO Cast: Anne Hathaway and Jesse Eisenberg Director: Carlos Saldanha Producer: Bruce Anderson and John C. Donkin Music: John Powell This by far has to be the most anticipated movie of this summer for all 3D animated movie buffs. The movie has all the right pedigree to be a complete entertainer. The makers of the Ice Age trilogy have come up with another of their master pieces. The story revolves around Blu, a domesticated blue Macaw from a small town in Minnesota, he also happens to be the last male blue macaw. He meets Jewel who is fiercely independent and also the bird of his dreams. The story follows them to Rio de Janeiro and all the crazy adventures they have together. Anne Hathaway and Jesse Eisenberg have lent their voices to the main characters.

DUM MARO DUM Cast: Abhishek Bachchan, Aditya Pancholi, Bipasha Basu, Rana Daggubati, Prateik Babbar and Deepika Padukone Director: Rohan Sippy Producer: Ramesh Sippy Music: Pritam Chakrabort Dum Maro Dum is one of the most anticipated movies for this summer and why not. It certainly has all the ingredients to call for an exciting entertainer. The multi starrer projects has Abhishek Bachchan and Bipasha Basu playing the lead with Aditya Pancholi, Pratiek Babbar and Rana Daggubati making up the other cast. Deepika Padukone makes a special appearance in a steamy hot song. The movie is set in Goa where Abhishek Bachchan plays a cop who is cracking down on the drug mafia, while other characters deal with addiction and other social ills. The movie will also witness the Bollywood debut of the Tollywood hero Rana. Awesome location, great cast, drugs, sex and mafia calls for a mouth watering plot.

SHAKTI Cast:Jr. NTR, Ileana, Pooja Bedi, Jackie Shroff and Sonu Sood

Director: Meher Ramesh Producer: C. Ashwini Dutt Music: Mani Sharma

Jr. NTR’s next movie is said to be the highest budget movie ever made in Tollywood and Ileana D’cruz would be the female lead in the movie. The movie promises to be action packed and mystic. It revolves around human beings with super powers and Primordial cosmic energies. To enhance the mystic feel of the movie, ancient Egypt has been chosen as part of the story background. Yesteryears actress Pooja Bedi plays the role of a Egyptian Queen. The movie also has Bollywood stars such as Jackie Shroff and Sonu Sood. The film portrays how the cosmic energy enters Jr. NTR and how it is linked to the ‘Ashtadasha Shakthi Peethas’, while the second part is the battle between Jr. NTR and the evil spirits.

Gadgets

-Shads When you compare the human race today, we are far away from what we used to be just a few decades ago and we continue to change at such a rapid rate that we live and see things differently today than yesterday. The main reason for this is technology, and what good is technology if it can’t help us through the deadly Indian summer. Hyderabad Life brings to you a few gifts that technology has provided…Gadgets!!

USB FRIDGE A few may say that you are over doing it, but this is certainly going to be the owner’s pride. The small portable fridge is just 362 g and it’s powered through a USB port. It is as simple as a plug and play gadget and can accommodate one can. So now, no matter where you go, you can always carry a can of drink and sip on it slowly for hours together and you will still have it cold. The fridge uses 5V USB power to cool the beverage. The fridge also has a door design for easy and multiple use so that you can sip on your beverage and replace it back in to keep it cool. Especially if you are planning a holiday this summer, the portable fridge is a must-have to ensure that your drink is cool and fizzy no matter where you are.

RUN, DIVE, DRIVE AND CAPTURE!! This super cool gadget is for die hard adventure freaks, especially for those who push themselves to the limit in their adventure outings. Unfortunately, these outdoor fans seldom have good snaps or videos to relive the moment, mainly because when they are in the middle of their adventures, they can’t take photographs and then there are no by-standers either who can do it for them. Most of the times, the places where they do choose to holiday are so inaccessible and harsh on cameras and other gadgets that they just can’t take any snaps there…or can they? GoPro Digital Hero 3 is turning this trend around. Now you can have photos and videos of all your adventures and the best part is that you can have the best angle for the shot. GoPro’s Digital Hero 3 is a 3-megapixel wrist-mounted waterproof digital video camera that weighs just 125 g. It shoots 2,048-by-1,536-pixel still images or 640-by-480 video and has an inbuilt memory of 16MB which can be upgraded with an SD card.

MYVU SUPER GOGGLES

This is a real cool gadget, not only for its futuristic looks but also for it functionality. This is certainly a must have for any long journeys, except when you are driving. The Myvu video goggles would ensure that you never miss your large screen TV even during your travel. Say good bye to those days when you had to squint your eyes to watch movies on the small screen of your Ipod. Vacations are about taking it easy, so carry your Myvu video goggles. Connect them to your iPod, lie back, and watch a show, enjoying the illusion of viewing it on a goodsized TV screen. The playback controls are provided in the connector cable for easy maneuvering of the menu. The eye gear also includes ear phones and the battery lasts for up to eight hours which guarantees that it won’t let you high dry in the middle of a boring journey.

ALL-IN-ONE ADAPTER COMPATIBLE IN 150 COUNTRIES. Summer vacations are fun no doubt, but it does get tedious when travelling, especially overseas. The most important and time consuming part of travelling is packing for the trip, ensuring that all the necessary items are packed and ensuring that they are within the weight limit is a challenge in itself. Trying to prioritize stuff to ensure that you have the most essential things covered is truly stressful. The most irritating part could be, you forgetting to pack something and statistics show that the most forgotten item is your charger. Hammacher Schlemmer bring to you the revolutionary Travel Adapter that is compatible to be used in 150 countries. The plug configures to fit a variety of international sockets, and it has a built-in USB port that allows you to leave chargers for cell phones, digital cameras, iPods, and other devices, creating extra space for other things in your luggage. The device allows simultaneous AC and USB connection to charge two devices at once. An integrated surge protector protects electronics from potential power spikes.

Gaming

BACK TO GAMING…THE WORK OUT GAMES FOR THIS SUMMER!!! After not being allowed to touch your consoles for the past few months, at last the restrictions are broken. Its summer time and we understand how much of over time your consoles are going to put in. With the heat melting everything outside, it’s no wonder that outdoor sports are going to be forgotten. Cricket bats and tennis rackets are going to be replaced with joysticks. No addiction is good for health, so this summer we bring you the best of Xbox Kinect games. These motion censored games are sure to give you the required dosage of exercise everyday and you won’t even need to drag yourself to the gym against your wish, neither do you have to risk going out in the sun. The interactive games are sure to keep you glued and surprise you with your weight loss at the end of the month.

YOOSTAR 2

REVIEW This game provides an amazing experience for movie buffs, aspiring stars, and everyday gamers alike. The game requires us to do what our previous generations did in front of a mirror. Imagine yourself to be a star and role-play some of your favorite scenes. This interactive game comes with single player and multi-player options. The Multi-Player option is perfect for parties. Even though the game does have its own share of technical glitches, it certainly is enjoyable. When in single player mode, the very few lines allotted to your character becomes a little of a drag and when the sensor picks up background noise and docks points it does test you patience but the quick play option with its impressive selection of 50 movie scenes is a great way to forget the technical glitches. Turn it on during a party and rope in your friends to role-play along with you and the laughs are going to be priceless. The game requires you to come out of your inhibitions and be a complete nut.

HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS Even though Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is supposed to be one of the most challenging games in Kinect, it certainly is beatable…in a very short time that is. This game is tailor-made for the fans of the Harry Potter series. Though unlike the previous games, the unavailability of free roaming is very disappointing but the really good graphics make up for it. The limited spells combined with the fact that the Kinect uses only your hand movement for controls makes the game a little monotonous. The game certainly has a decent pace to it though. After the death of Dumbledore, the evil Lord Voldemort

has risen to power, and Harry, Ron, and Hermione are on the run, searching for four magical artifacts known as Horcruxes, the keys to Voldemort’s immortality. So the game has you on the run from the first sequence.

REVIEW

Since the game has covered only the first part of the JK Rowling’s book, the story ends pretty abruptly. The game obviously has a few filler missions which should make up for it.

KINECT JOY RIDE Play the game and you would understand why even after such major technological advances, real cars have not replaced the steering wheel with anything else. If controlling a car with an imaginary steering wheel in your hand was tough, then add to that the element of lag. Nevertheless, “Kinect Joy Ride” combines wild kart racing excitement with the effortless fun of fullbody gaming. Once you are through the first part of getting used to these technical issues, the game does offer a few thrills. Though the game is very light on content, it does make a perfect family entertainer where in you can plan your whole evening around it. The game offers some great features and game modes where you can choose to go solo or as a co- pilot or even set up a complete crew. The tricks that you can pull of while you jump are really spectacular. Your acrobatic skills can be in full view as you are the car in

REVIEW

the game, mimicking your body as you bend, twist and move your body to hug the curves, jump through obstacles.

FIGHTERS UNCAGED

REVIEW At last, a fighting game worth mentioning. It comes as a whiff of fresh air to the gamers who love macho stuff and would run at the sight of mush. It’s for those muscle building, butt kicking, martial arts fans, who can let loose their libido in their living rooms. The game involves you to just fight with bare hands and the fact that you can kick and head butt in thin air to replicate your moves in the game are close to priceless. Though the replication is not exact, the swings triggers stock movements that more than make up for it. As you continue beating up hulky fighters you get to unlock more hulky guys to fight. This game will certainly drain you out and if you are not physically tired, you will certainly grow tired of the game. The sound track sounds as if it’s on a 10 second loop which does get to you after a period of time. The lack of multi-player options (though we understand is dangerous considering 2 people might try to punch and kick each other.) and lack of Xbox live option brings the replay rating to its lowest.

SAFETY FIRST… THE VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT!!

Shads

A NEW VARIANT OF ANY CAR IS USUALLY UNDERSTOOD TO BE MORE OR LESS THE SAME OLD CAR WITH JUST A FEW FACE-LIFTS, BUT TRUST THE GERMANS TO BE DIFFERENT. THE ‘ALL NEW’ VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT WOULD VOUCH FOR THAT WHEN IT WAS DISPLAYED AT THE PARIS MOTOR SHOW 2010 AND THE SOON TO BE LAUNCHED CAR ALSO MAKES THE COMPANY’S MARKETING STRATEGY VERY CLEAR WITH ITS COMPETITIVE PRICING. The tweaks in the appearance changes the Passat from its previous old stately look to a youthful next generation ride with quadrangular fog lamps, and angular twin projector units. The new Passat also boasts of a substantially wider and longer boot. Apart from these changes in the appearance, the Passat is also equipped with a new power unit. It is available only in the new 1.8L TSI petrol engine with contemporary 6 Speed slick shift manual transmission which shifts gears very quickly; it offers 2 overdrive ratios on the 5th and the 6th gears so as to achieve greater fuel-efficiency and lower emissions. The feature that truly sets the Passat apart from its competitors is its safety component. It received a 5 Star rating in the Euro NCAP crash test only because 5 is the max that can be allotted. Apart from the usual features such as Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Traction Control System, a Passat also comes with 8 Airbags, Electro Mechanical Power Steering, engine immobilizer, back-up horn, Electronic Stabilization Program, Electronic Differential Lock and dynamic bi-Xenon headlights.

life_aprl_Final.indd 50

The attention to detail when it comes to safety and comfort is truly commendable. The Dynamic Light Assist detects oncoming traffic and automatically brightens or lowers itself so that others aren’t dazzled by its effect. Even the Keyless operations have ingenuity written all over them. Apart from giving keyless entry into the car, it can even open the boot. The only requirement is that one should have the key in the pocket and just sweep your foot under the boot, perfect when you are alone and have your hands full especially after a shopping trip. The Adaptive Cruise control takes safety to a different level. If the car is running at 30 kmph, and a crash is imminent or if the driver doesn’t take to braking immediately, the automatic emergency braking function will automatically brake the car. It also monitors a driver’s habits and analyse if a driver needs to rest depending on his sluggishness. It also provides visual and a verbal warnings before it sends shudders through the steering wheel as a last resort to wake you up.

Fitness

The gluteal muscles, or glutes, are one of the largest muscle groups in the body and an area that most people want to tone. Fortunately, it’s relatively easy to isolate and exercise these muscles. In this article, we’ll show you several exercises to strengthen and define your butt, including hip extensions and lunges. Let’s start this lower-body workout with donkey kicks, which work your butt and your lower back.

How to Do Straight Leg Donkey Kicks Straight leg donkey kicks are an effective way to work the butt. You don’t need any fancy equipment for this glutes exercise, just an exercise mat.

Step 1:

Step 2:

Step 3:

Assume start position as shown by kneeling down and supporting your upper body on your forearms.

Lift right leg behind you so your foot lifts up toward the ceiling while keeping it straight.

Return to start position and repeat with left leg.

How to Do Hip Extensions on Stability Ball In a hip extension, the hands and toes are positioned on the floor and the legs are raised one at a time. This variation of the glutes exercise uses a stability ball for support.

Step 1:

Step 2:

Step 3:

Assume start position as shown by laying face down on stability ball, hands and toes on floor.

Extend end left leg toward ceiling.

Repeat on right.

UNDERSTANDING DIFFERENCE

The awareness of difference breeds tolerance and sensitivity in one. To be able to look at autism as a difference and to make space in our minds, bodies, homes and worldviews for a condition that does not necessarily always have to be treated with patronage or pity, would be to overcome one’s own inhibitions towards what one sees as the unknown and the alien.

56

life_aprl_Final.indd 56

3/30/2011 12:26:28 PM

AUTISM AWARENESS DAY In 2008, the UN declared 2nd April as the World Autism Awareness Day. Autism is a lifelong condition that affects how a person communicates with, and relates to, other people. It also affects how they perceive the world around them. People with autism are not physically disabled in the same way that a person with cerebral palsy may be; they do not require wheelchairs and they ‘look’ just like anybody else minus the physical disability. Due to the invisible nature of physical disability, it can be much harder to create awareness and understanding of the condition.

INCIDENCE OF AUTISM IN INDIA Recent estimates have placed the prevalence of autism in the U.S. and UK at approximately 1 in 110 people. At India’s current population, this means there are more than 2 million persons with autism in the country. This estimate assumes that there are no significant variations in this rate worldwide. In India there is no such epidemiological study done. While the disorder is not rare, the majority of people with Autism in India have not been diagnosed and do not receive the services they need. This condition occurs in many countries, but is especially true in India. There is a tremendous lack of awareness and misunderstanding about autism even among medical professionals, who may misdiagnose the condition. Autism is known as a ‘spectrum disorder’ because the severity of symptoms ranges from a mild learning and social difficulty to a severe impairment, with multiple problems

and highly unusual behaviours. Autism is not a rare disorder, being the third most common developmental disorder, more common than Down’s Syndrome. Typically, about 20 in a population of 10,000 people will have autism or symptoms of autism. 80% of those affected by autism are boys. Autism is found throughout the world, in families of all economic, social, academic and racial backgrounds.

PROBLEMS PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH AUTISM FACE IN INDIA One of the major difficulties faced by parents of children with autism in India is obtaining an admission in school. Some percentage of children with Autism do not have intellectual challenges and they can go to mainstream schools. With the help of an understanding teacher or possibly an aide, a high functioning child with Autism could function very well in a regular school, and learn valuable social skills from his peers. But this

57

life_aprl_Final.indd 57

3/30/2011 12:26:34 PM

Health

seldom happens in India. The rigidity and pressure of schools in India can make it difficult for a child with autism to cope without special allowances. Those children who are low functioning may end up attending special schools, but these schools almost always lack an understanding of effective methods of handling the challenging behaviours of children with Autism. As one psychologist said, “These kids just get dumped or ignored at the special schools. Children with autism are frequently refused admission even in special schools because teachers in these schools say that they are not trained to handle this condition. These teachers feel that children with autism are sometimes more challenging to work with, than children with intellectual challenges. Currently, the needs of children with Autism in India are not being met either in regular or in special education systems. With the increasing awareness about Autism, more children are diagnosed with this condition and there is a huge demand for services. In future, schools will be forced to educate their teachers and accept these children in their schools rather than turning the parents away!

WHAT CAN THE GOVERNMENT DO? There are not enough services to meet the needs of intellectually challenged children and adults in India, let alone those who have autism. The state and central governments should ensure that the special needs of children with autism are not ignored. There is an urgent need to train teachers in schools to integrate children with autism. There is also an urgent need to begin group homes for these children when they become adults. People with autism have a normal life span and many will require supervision after their parents’ death. Many are left at the mercy of their siblings, family members or relatives and that is not always the most comfortable circumstances for most to be in.

WHAT CAN NGOS DO? NGOs can help spread the awareness about this condition to as many people as they can, especially in the rural areas. With awareness comes early diagnosis. Intervention should begin as soon as possible following diagnosis. Early intervention is the key to helping

58

life_aprl_Final.indd 58

3/30/2011 12:26:36 PM

children with Autism. NGOs can also run parent support groups to help parents in coping with their child’s diagnosis and planning the course of action after the diagnosis. Parents whose child is newly diagnosed with autism need a lot of support and counseling. NGOs can play a major role in support and counseling too.

WHAT CAN PARENTS DO? Parents must accept the child’s condition. Parents should not lose hope and they should continuously try to make a difference in their child’s life. They can spread awareness about the condition and be the best advocates for their child.

WHAT ALL OF US CAN DO? Learn to accept that everybody is different. Respect each other’s differences. Special children are children first; don’t just look at them as a ‘condition’ and outcast them. They also want to be a part of everything. Never underestimate the tremendous potential of these children. They give a totally different dimension to the way we look at the world.

“LASSI”

SEEN IN HYDERABAD Bringing down the Hydearabad heat is not exactly a human proposition. The best one can do is resist the temptation of aerated drinks to temporarily kill the raging thirst and go look for some quality nutrition that will not only quench the heat induced thirst, but will also replenish your energy. Hyderabad has always been known for its dairy products. This is one city, where people have not always have had to turn towards the usual brands for its ice creams. Big and small ice-cream joints can be seen at practically every nook and corner. Also, the city has always had the best in lassis and faloodas. We, at Hyderabad Life will try and suggest a couple of places where you might find the best of ice-creams, lassis and faloodas. Creamstone Creations is not the newest ice cream place in Hyderabad. It’s been almost two years since Creamstone opened its outlet at Jubilee Hills. Its tag-line “Freeze your imagination” could not have been more wrongly phrased, because one really has to unfreeze their imagination to be able to make the most of the innumerable options that Creamstone offers. The experience at Creamstone is completely interactive with the customer having the maximum rights to choose the best and worst of what they want, and no one to raise an eyebrow. At Creamstone, who’s to say that you cannot mix bananas and oranges or butterscotch and chocolates or mint and bananas? Experimental or not, you can ask for practically anything from the wide variety of flavours, fruits, toppings and sauces. And we almost forgot, everything is purely vegetarian; something that non-vegetarians will hardly notice. They will beat up your ice-cream and serve it to you like you have never known.

For those who cannot look beyond the dark brown contours of chocolate, you should try the Willy Wonka which is a rich gooey mush of chocolate with all kinds of chocolate toppings. Make it your own Willy Whacky by adding your choice of mangoes to it. Address: 1. Hyderabad, L V Prasad Marg, Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh 2. This summer, hunt down Sheetal Café for its brilliant lassis. Hosts of professionals and students, from all over the city drive or hike down to this café just for its utterly delicious and rejuvenating lassis. And much cheaper than most lassi joints in the city, Sheetal chills your innards as well as your pockets. Address: Sheetal Café, New Mallepally, near Anwar Uloom College.

Agra sweets seems almost like an anomaly amidst all the kebab, biryani, Nizami foodfare that dominates the air in Charminar. This is one place you visit when you have had your fill of meat and you need to wash it down with a nice, thick, gooey lassi. And this is the closest you will get to an authentic North Indian lassi, replete with a layer of malai that just refuses to be washed down in to your gut. You will have your variety as well; the normal lassi, the special lassi, the rose lassi etc. However, the prices are not exactly the most reasonable. Had it not been for the excuse of rising prices or the recession or the heat, you wouldn’t want to forgive Agra sweets for its unnecessarily high prices. And since you are there anyway, spend whatever’s left on the reasonably delicious falooda. Address: Near Charminar

In fact, the word mango, is a derivative of the Malayalam word “Manga”. Religiously also, the mango has a rich significance in Hinduism. For instance, in Hindu mythology, a ripe mango held by Lord Ganesha is symbolic of the perfect devotee. Mango blossoms are used to worship Goddess Saraswati. Mangoes are rich in phytochemicals and other kinds of nutrients such as vitamins A, C and E, which are antioxidant in nature. The mango is very low on proteins, fats and calories. They have enough salts and vitamins

to replenish you when you are down in energy. The mango has great significance in non-Western traditions of medicine as well. For instance, the renowned Unani physician, Hakeem Hashmi prescribe to strengthen and rejuvenate the nerve tissues in muscles, heart, brain and other parts of the body. Mango has enzymes such as magneferin, katechol oxidase and lactase which are are good antitoxins and clean out your system, each time you move your bowel. Moreover, mangoes also improve your immunity and are known for their anticarcinogenic capabilities. Mangoes also contain a lot of tryptophan, which is known to scientists as the catalyst to serotonin or the “happiness hormone”. Mangoes are brilliant thirst busters. A touch of mango to each of your drinks will make your day mangolicious. You can stir up mango-ey cocktails and mocktails such as the Absolut Mangito with a dash of Absolut Pears Vodka, Ginger Syrup, Iced Tea, Mango, Mint Leaves and Pineapple Juice or a much simpler

mango daiquiri with Dark Rum, Mango, Orange Curacao and a sweet and sour mix. You could also try the Sexy Daiquiri with kiwis, mango, rum and vodka or the Trace of Mango Martini which contains apple juice, apple liquer, buffalo trace bourbon, cinnamon schnapps, and well, mango. And if you are one of our under-18 readers, or if summer is your season for abstention then try the non-alcoholic concoctions of mango lassi with mango, sugar, water and curd or the Mango-Orange Smoothie which is a thick liquidy mix of mangoes and oranges. And there is of course the “world famous in India” Kairi Panha. This is something for those who prefer the sour tingle of raw mangoes. One can easily but patiently prepare this drink by boiling raw mangoes and adding other spices to it. And why leave out the mango from your treasured dessert. You should definitely try the mango sorbet. So, with that, here’s wishing you a healthy mango season. Just don’t overdo it. You might just end up with mango boils in your mouth, or worse on your bum.

Weekend Travel

It’s not school anymore, when summers meant months-long vacations and the freedom to fly off anywhere you wanted. As professionals, summers have practically lost all meaning in terms of any opportunities of vacationing one could have had. One can only grab the smallest opportunity to escape the soaring Deccan heat, and the smallest option one is left with is a teensy-weensy two day weekend. We at Hyderabad Life thought of a number of popular weekend destinations to chill off the summer.

“Summer”-izing in Araku

The Princess of the Hills

Let’s begin with the one closest to home i.e. Araku valley, on the Eastern Ghats, at a distance of about 120 kilometres from Vishakhapatnam or Vizag. Araku has always been a favourite because one always has the chance to take a dip at the Vizag beaches and then move on to the cool breezes of the valley. You can take a train from Vizag or even drive in to the valley. Araku is famous for its picturesque beauty. It’s almost perfect with green valleys, water falls and streams that keep you occupied through the course of your journey, by train or road. The journey to Araku will take you through many tunnels and thick forests as well.

A little more down South and you could opt for Kodaikanal, or “the princess of the hills”, as it is often referred to. Propped at an altitude of more than 2100 metres, Kodaikanal covers an area of only about 21 square kilometers. It has been one of the most popular retreats for tourists and vacationers for years now. Known for its verdant serenity, Kodaikanal is located in the midst of the Pali hills. The slopes of the hills are covered in dense forests of Eucalyptus and shola, rocks, waterfalls and a beautiful lake, going by the name of Kodaikanal lake. The lake, which is 5 kilometres in circumference is a man-made lake.

Once you reach you could opt for the official APTDC guest house and the package tours that they offer. The package tour also ensures that you get to see the local tribal dance. Don’t miss the Borra caves and the Museum of tribal handicrafts and lifestyle, once you are there. Araku is also known the world over for its coffee plantations.

And if you are lucky you might even spot the Kurinji flower, which blossoms only once in twelve years. No wonder, it’s known as the pride of Kodaikanal. One of the more non-touristy reasons for which Kodaikanal is renowned is its educational institutions of international repute. In fact, looking for a reputed school for your child could even become a smart excuse for a much desired holiday at Kodaikanal.

The Queen of the Hills

“Mount”-ing Abu

From the princess, now let’s move on to the “queen of hill stations”, Ooty. Now who has not heard about Ooty or Ootacamund or Udhagamandalam, the district capital of the Nilgiri Hills in Tamil Nadu. Ooty. It is situated at a distance of almost 105 km from Coimbatore. So the best option would be to either take a train or fly down to Coimbatore and drive up to your destination. Along the drive you will see lofty hills, lakes and dense forests of Eucalyptus. The sight is unforgettable. The hills are more than 2290 metres and the highest peak is Doddabetta at 2623 m. While you are there, make it a point to visit the Government Rosa Garden, the Ooty Botanical Gardens, the Ooty lake, the stone house, the Toda huts, the Ooty mountain railway, the St. Stephen’s Church, the Wax world, the Ooty golf links and the tribal museum.

Let’s move North. The North with its vastly different topography and climate has a completely different experience to offer. There’s Mount Abu. As a child, I have heard of more numbers of people travelling to Mount Abu for summers. One wonders why fewer people choose this quaint little place now which has an even quainter ancient name Arbudaanchal. The older name is derived from the name of Arbuada, son of Himalaya, who saved Nandi from a chasm.

After Darjeeling and Assam, tea from Ooty is the most savored and relished. In fact, Ooty became famous only after tea estates were established there. Keep a look out for the annual Tea and Tourism festival and see if you can coincide it with your visit.

It is the highest peak of the Aravalli range that cuts across Rajasthan. Mount Abu is often known as an “oasis in the desert”. It is no wonder that it should be called so, because the amount of lush greenery that it offers in the midst of the barrenness of the dry and arid Rajasthan. The Abu hillside is covered by coniferous trees and flowering shrubs. Not just a summer retreat, Mount Abu, for Jains especially, has some religious significance. It has an exquisite array of Dilwara Jain Temples that are as old as 700-800 years. Mount Abu is fairly well-connected by air, bus or trains. With just about enough to entice you, there’s nothing really to stop you to head off towards the North-West.

Spending your money at Munnar We will end our Southern fetish with the one and only Munnar in North Kerala. This is a paradise that not many know the likes of. It is located on the Western Ghats in the Northern district of Idukki. At an altitude of almost 1600 metres, Munnar is located about 140 kilometres from Cochin. Adequately well-connected, the closest airport is at Cochin, while the nearest railway station is at Aluva. One must have been exposed to the beauty of Munnar through the large number of both Hindi and regional language films that have been shot there. The name Munnar refers to the location of the valleys at the confluence of three mountain streams, Madurapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala. (Munnu=three; ar=rivers, Malayalam). Munnar is also known for its tea. There are more that 30 tea estates in and around Munnar. It is in fact the acres and acres of tea-estates along the valleys of Munnar that contribute to its abundant green beauty. There is something absolutely compelling about the sereneness that Munnar offers that attracts travelers to her not only in summer, but all the year around. Photograph by Shads

Kalimpong Calling

Ganging up in Gangtok

Kalimpong in West Bengal is mostly known for its premier educational institutes. These were set up during the colonial period and their architecture is nothing less than awe-inspiring. Part of the Darjeeling district, Kalimpong is located at an altitude of 1800 metres on the Bhutan-TibetSikkim border. Look out for the old churches, the Graham’s home, the Morgan House, and the golf course which still bear architectural signs of colonial rule. Earlier it used to be a tiny Lepcha village and now holidayers find refuge there amidst the thick forests, green valleys and vast meadows. Things to look out for at Kalimpong would also include Durpin Dara, Kali Bari, Predong Monastery, and Mangal Dham. Reaching Kalimpong is not really difficult. You can choose a 70 kilometer jeep ride from New Jalpaiguri Railway station, which should take about 2.5 hours.

Let’s hike a little up to the North-East to Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim. Placed at an altitude of 1, 437 metres, Gangtok is part of the Shivalik hills. This small town, which is the largest of Sikkim is home to people with different ethnic backgrounds including the Nepalese, Bhutanese and the Lepchas. One of the most sought after destinations in Sikkim is the Enchey monastery and now it has become a dense Buddhist hub, with Buddhist followers travelling from across the world to visit Gangtok and the monastery. The terrain is fairly mountainous, so you will need to hire taxis, jeeps or land rovers to travel around. The nearest airport to Gangtok is Bagdogra from where you can hire a conveyance to drive upto Gangtok. The nearest railway station is at Jalpaiguri. Don’t miss the local cuisine if you are a fan of Tibetan food. It’s well-worth to drop in at Darjeeling on the way up or back.

Tracking Manali When you are in the North you can’t possibly miss Manali, the Manali that is known world-over and offers one of the best trails for hippies. Manali is located in the Beas river valley at the Northern-most end of the Kulu valley. Kulu is pretty close by. So, if you are doing Manali, try not to miss Kulu. Manali is a paradise for all those who like rocky terrains, greenery and wouldn’t mind a little bit of hike or a jumpy ride on a jeep. Deep gorges, cliffs, valleys and forests around, Manali is one of the most sceninc experiences that weekend trip can hardly do justice to.There is an interesting legend associated with Manali. Many may have heard the myth about Varvasvata, who is the 7th incarnation of Manu. One fine day he found a fish in his bathing water. The fish was the first avatar of Vishnu, Matsya. The fish spoke to him. It told him that if Varvasvata took good care of him, it would reap much benefits for the latter. Manu obliged. He took care of the fish until it grew so big that it had to be released into the sea. Before the fish swam off, it warned its caretaker of a massive flood that would drown the entire world, and if Varvasvata wanted to save himself, he should construct a large enough ship. When the floods came, the ship was ready and the fish towed Varvasvata and seven other sages to safety. As the floods came down, the ship came and rested against the hills to a place which is now known as Manali. This story is remarkably similar to the Biblical story of Noah’s Ark. So there, that’s the eight most sought after destinations for this summer, for us at Hyderabad Life. And we are about to pack up and take a hike, home. Because we can’t really afford to chill off this summer. But, since you can, ensure you can make the most of it.

Horoscope

TAURUS (April 19th to May 19th) Its time you take a hefty health insurance because you might just need it. Come clean if you are having an affair with anyone in office because professional secrecy is bound to lead to devastating circumstances. Planning holidays may be a good idea especially with your mess in office and with the annual closing coming in. Thursdays are going to be lucky for you, and did we mention most of the clubs have Ladies night on Thursdays?

GEMINI (May 20th to June 19th) There is nothing much going your way this month. You will be an emotional crack up and when it comes to money, we could confidently say your plans of being the next Bill Gates will get a major setback. You should take part in a threesome and if you do have a crazy fetish, include an old man in it as he may well turn out to help you in life. If you could tape it, nothing like it because you will be rewarded for what you do; so the Oscars-for-blackmail may well be on the cards.

CANCER (June 20th to July 21st) Music plays a very important role in your life this month. Try to tap that potential, and release an album because you may not have your job for long. If you do want to save your job, be a loner in office. You are going to be more than emotional this month so get yourself loads of tissues. I would not advice you to be close to your partner because they will force you to do things even if you don’t want to. So if you are a guy, get the blue pill.

LEO (July 22nd to August 21st) You have so much going for you but your typical lazy attitude will stop you from achieving what you should, so try to push yourself more. Do not invest your time on anything but work, this way you can be a star performer and will avoid yourself an embarrassing financial situation which is haunting you this month. You might get a little worked up with the way your office functions but do not interfere in it. Try to keep your vices curbed.

VIRGO (August 22nd to September 21st) This month is going to be a whirlwind, with a fare share of up’s and down’s. You will go half mad meeting new people because most of them will be eccentric to the limit. You will be able to learn and excel, so good time for exams and interviews. However do not try to get into an argument for what you think you know as facts are actually just nonsense. So think before you leap; who will be termed the eccentric?

LIBRA (September 22nd to October 21st) It’s the best time for you to catch up with friends and family as they will be able to tolerate you and if your work involves you to be close to Vehicles or heavy machinery then you may need them even more; hope you get the hint! Your reluctance to ask questions in your work place may end up being the root cause for your accident, so open up, and question. Better silly than broken…right? 74

SCORPIO (October 22nd to November 20th) Eat a lot of garlic; this will give you garlic breath which in turn will keep all your friends away. This should do you a world of good as this month you will be in the company of a lot of selfish people and their sole intention is to use you and benefit from you. It is also the best time to get a boob job or get that nose of yours fixed as this month is favorable to try and change your appearance.

SAGITTARIUS (November 21st to December 20th) Don’t think that just because you give good advice to people, they will like you, in fact the most annoying person is the one who keeps giving advices when not asked for one. People who are close to you are going to annoy you to an extent that you will actually consider a pilgrimage to the Himalayas. If you have kids then we advise you to stop reading and start running towards the Himalayas.

CAPRICORN ( November 21st to December 20th) Your social life outside the office looks fabulous; go ahead and rock yourself to glory this month. When it comes to office, we advice you to your keep clean feet, wear clean socks and wear clean shoes for you never know when you will be stuck in a foot-in-mouth situation. It’s best to just keep your mouth shut for everything that you say because it can and possibly will be taken in a totally different context.

AQUARIUS (January 21st to February 18th) Keep your live-for-the- moment attitude in check, because you like it or not, you are going to live longer than that. Your indulgence in entertainment is going to get really murky, financially and emotionally. You will have issues with kids as well. So putting 2 and 2 together we can safely advice you to keep your entertainment on a no-touch basis. We would also advice you to keep your cool in tough situations to avoid getting hospitalized.

PISCES

(February 18th to March 18th)

Keep your live-for-the- moment attitude in check, because you like it or not, you are going to live longer than that.

ARIES (March 19th to April 18th) Do not pass the buck when it comes to your work, people will goof it up. We also advice you to join the pirates of Somalia for this month as voyages are favorable to you and they are also profitable financially. You will have a lot of discouragement this month but don’t let anybody come in between you and your goal, especially your family. So Somalia it is. 75

Usually these guys finish off the good po rtions in a hurry and get stuck wi th nothing but wo rst parts of their life. They take their time in making friends and they typically are very committed once into the friendship. These guys like to always be in the side-lines and do not jump into anything in life. They always take their time to analyze the situation and then make a decision. These guys take the better-safe-than-sorry approach

Case 5: People who do not share and eat the dosa as if it is precious: These folks are very protective about their life. They do not want anyone to come and interfere in their life. They like to hide their true nature and intensions for their benefit. Beware of such people as they are in every group for their own need and nothing else.

Case 6: People who offer their first bite to others: These guys are overly friendly. They do anything to be part of a group and make everyone feel like the group is more important than the individuals. They are the glue that holds any group together. They are very friendly and bring out the best of all the others in the group. They go out of their way to help other friends. Most groups should have a person like this and they are the ones who plan the group outings and other group activities. Once this person is out of the group, typically the group slowly falls apart.

Case 8: People who wait for others to make the offer first: Typical people I must say. They are unsure about everything. Even if they wanted to offer, they would wait till the other person offers the food first. If the other person is silent, so are these people. They are the followers. They may terrific ideas, they will pitch it to someone else and get their advice before proceeding. Sadly, most of the elderly world like these type of people.

Case 10: People who offer the whole dosa and eat from others plates: These folks are at another extreme. They know what they want, they get what they want but they cannot enjoy what they want. Instead they tend to settle for other things in life which satisfies their immediate needs but do not satisfy the person completely. These guys are perceived as born losers because even when they have the thing they wanted, they can’t stop others from stealing it from them. So next time you sit with a person eating a masala dosa, look closely and see if he falls into one of the above categories. You may be surprised as to how much it reveals about the person.

But whatever it is you should enjoy eating your Masala Dosa! 77

Okay, so how come? • Who was the first person to look at a cow and say, “I think I’ll squeeze these dangly things here, and drink whatever comes out?” • Who was the first person to say, “See that chicken there? I’m going g to eat the next thing that comes out of its butt” • Why is there a light in the fridge and not in the freezer? • Why do people point to their wrist when asking for the time, but i b don’t point to their crotch when they ask where the bathroom is? • Why does your OB-GYN leave the room when you get undressed if they are going to look up there anyway? • Why does Goofy stand erect while Pluto remains on all fours? They’re both dogs! • If Wile E. Coyote had enough money to buy all that Acme crap, why didn’t he just buy dinner? • If quizzes are quizzical, what are tests?

???

• If corn oil is made from corn, and vegetable oil is made from vegetables, then what is baby oil made from? • If electricity comes from electrons, does morality come from morons? • Why do the Alphabet song and Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star have the same tune? • (Stop that singing and read on..........) • Do illiterate people get the full effect of Alphabet Soup? • Did you ever notice that when you blow in a dog’s face, he gets mad at you, but when you take him on a car ride, he sticks his head out the window? • Does pushing the elevator button more than once make it arrive faster?
