THE HYDERABAD
POWER LIST!
At Hyderabad Life, we always try to bring to you the very essence of our beloved city. And we have look at things from a different perspective. So continuing our penchant for celebrating the zeitgeist of Hyderabad, we bring to you the Hyderabad Power List – a veritable who’s who of personalities who have added to the pride of the city! Once the decision to compile a list of the most powerful Hyderabadis was made, our research team has been spending all its waking moments setting up a Power database and looking out for Hyderabadis who are letting their actions do the talking! But who makes it to this power list? We define power as influence. In simplest terms, it is how much impact the actions of one person can have on others – the more impact, the more influence. For this power list, we are considering Hyderabadis across all walks of life – business, media, politics, government services, social service, entertainment, law, academia, arts, fashion, music – this league of extra ordinary gentlemen/women are all together a different school of thought or perhaps institutions within themselves. So friends, let’s put our hands together for the movers and shakers of Hyderabad & recognise their contribution to our lives. At the same time, if you would like to nominate somebody you know, please write in to us at info@hyderabadlife.in

Salma Hayek an illegal immigrant The US has been fighting illegal immigration for years now, but there is one illegal immigrant that we bet they are thankful for. Salma Hayek, in a recent interview, confessed that she was a former undocumented immigrant. “I was an illegal immigrant in the United States,” Hayek said. “It was for a small period of time, but I still did it”. The Best Actress nominee has been involved in promoting awareness programs about violence against women and on the rising discrimination against undocumented workers.
Justin goes country!! Music unites the world and quite literally when you have Justin Bieber and Rascal Flatts joining hands for an upcoming single. The 16 year old pop sensation tweeted “I love @Rascal Flatts and I’m honored that they are making music with me”. The lead singer of the Country Music band Gary LeVox was impressed with Bieber’s talent & was heard saying that “the kid is really talented and can play 5 to 6 instruments really well”. We’ve heard all kinds of music mixes. Guess we are ready for some pop and country mix as well!
Prince of Darkness turns doctor Finally, science has confirmed what we suspected all along. Ozzy Osbourne is truly the prince of darkness. His DNA showed some interesting patterns which scientists claim they have never seen before. They went on record to point out that his alcohol disposition is 6 times higher than normal. Wow that explains a lot!! And to top it all, Ozzy has now started offering medical advice based on his crazy survival stories to British Fans. God save the Brits!
Jolie happy growing old In a world of Botox and surgeries, here comes a whiff of fresh air. At last we hear an actress wishing the spotlight to fade along with her age. Angelina Jolie feels that her life is too hectic & wants to slow down as she grows older. Naturally, all the attention would reduce, she says. The 35 year old Oscar winner was quoted “I just assume the older I get, the more it’ll go away”.

Oprah’s OWN channel Oprah Winfrey is launching the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). The self-titled cable network is expected to reach nearly 80 million homes and, according to the goddess herself, will connect “you to your best self and to the world.” Talk about a lofty goal! Oprah says she always knew she would be a “light carrier” and that her 25-year run as a talk show host would simply be a starting point for her “next thing.”
Hugh Hefner presents huge engagement ring Why would a hot 24 year old girl get married to an 84 year old man? It’s certainly not for his looks and certainly not his stamina. Even the chances of starting a family are really slim. Rule out the option of having a life time of bliss, we can rather call it a couple of seasons. But one look at the engagement ring on Crystal Harris and you get the picture. The Lord of Playboy mansion Hugh Hefner presented a huge rock to his lady love to seal the deal. Crystal Harris had no qualms showing off her recent love seal on twitter.
Matt Kemp has struck out with Rihanna Rumor has it that the outfielder and the singer are no longer an item, as the sexy crooner “was basically just over it”. Apparently, the relationship was “never as serious as it looked,” a friend of the couple’s said. In early December, rumors of Kemp cheating circulated. There’s no evidence that this split is connected to that chatter, but one thing is for certain. Rihanna leaves this relationship in a much better state than she did when she broke up with Chris Brown.

Big B for the Big Cat
The tigers have something to rejoice about this festive season. A 12 hour telethon by Amitabh Bachchan for a new channel raked in Rs. 4.86 crores for the Save our Tiger campaign. He also parted with a few of his prized possessions including his 2 favorite sunglasses and a watch. The glasses were auctioned off for a cool Rs 1.25 lakh & Rs. 70,000 whereas the watch got a whopping Rs 7.20 lakh.
Naach Munni Naach!!
Triple Treat for Sameera Talk about kick-starting your year with a bang! Sameera Reddy needed no lady luck as she herself turned into one. She celebrated her birthday with her parents in Mumbai who went on a gifting spree, giving her a White BMW 5 series and following it up with an exclusive deluxe flat. The icing on the cake came when ace director Priyadarshan signed her for his next film opposite Ajay Devgn.
Tricky Ranbir Who said actors ain’t smart? We salute Ranbir Kapoor for his brilliance in affair management. In a TV show recently, he revealed that he saved the numbers of his girlfriends as ‘Battery Low’. Thus each time he got a call from them, the girl he is with would assume that his battery is running out. He also admitted to saving girls’ numbers under guy names. No wonder this simple boy next door turned out to be too hot to handle for you-know-who!
The Badnaam Munni has danced her way to glory with Zandu Balm. After the runaway success of the song, Zandu Balm has roped her in as their brand ambassador. She was busy shooting for the commercials in Telugu, Tamil & Hindi, sharing screen space with Suriya & Jr NTR. Unfortunately this meant that she could not be with Arbaaz on their wedding anniversary. Hope they balm up their heart ache and make up for the lost time!

Hrithik’s close shave No, we aren’t talking about his stubble. The Greek God was recently hospitalized when his throat and lungs went into spasm. The doctors informed him that a 15 minute delay could have been fatal. Apparently it was an allergic reaction to some antibiotic medicines he had taken and had nothing to do with the outcome of his recent movies!
Shilpa’s personal genie!! Raj Kundra seems to have taken the phrase ‘Your wish is my command’ quite literally. A few months back, wifey Shilpa Shetty expressed her desire to live in Burj Khalifa – the tallest building in the world. Voila, the man presents her a new apartment on the 19th floor of the building as a gift for their wedding anniversary. Hope her wishes continue to be within his budget!
Kaali Piggy chops!! If you think her statements in Koffee with Karan were bold, wait till you see Priyanka Chopra in Karan Johar’s remake of `Agneepath’ where she plays a prostitute called Kaali. She now joins the likes of Tabu & Rani Mukherjee who have also played prostitutes. Incidentally Kareena had also played a similar role in Chameli. Guess we will have to wait and see how they react when the comparisons bug starts to roll.
Deepika removes RK We knew it would happen someday! The famous RK tattoo on Deepika Padukone’s neck has been redesigned. According to sources, she wanted to completely get rid of it but then went on to get it redesigned and now it reads TMK. The new tattoo does not support her or for that matter Siddharth Mallya’s initials. For the time being, it is being loosely interpreted as initials for the movie Tees Maar Khan. Wonder what it is all about!

Legally Charan This suing business is surely catching on in India. Mega Power star Ram Charan has threatened to sue a website and a TV channel for spreading ‘false’ news about him. The website had reported that Charan had gone berserk on Sagar Society road driving his car and violating traffic rules at midnight. They went on to add that he did so to overcome the grief of the debacle of his latest movie Orange. Charan made it very clear through Twitter that he is not going to sit back and let the culprits off easy.
Ileana with Ranbir After rocking Tollywood, our very own Ileana is all set to capture Bollywood. The Pokiri actress is cast opposite the hot and happening Ranbir Kapoor for Anurag Basu’s Barfi. It is reported that she has been finalized as the second lead for the project. The makers are planning to rope in either Asin or Priyanka for the other role. That calls for a very powerful cast and we wish our girl all the very best.
Pawan, Mahesh and Bond What happens when two highly anticipated movies bomb at the box office? Their stars become best of friends and decide to share screen space. Puli star Pawan Kalyan and Khaleja hero Mahesh Babu have become good friends & have been using this friendship to a positive effect. The latest buzz is that they would be sharing screen space in a James Bond type movie. Now that’s what we call Lion Hearted men! Get it?
Anushka Smitten It seems to be heart-break month for many men as pin-up girl Anushka has confessed her love on national television. However she refused to reveal any more details – not even the lucky guy’s name. She went on to say “If I tell his name now, it would raise many eyebrows. But I can say he is totally in love with me”. The couple seems to be planning a wedding in the next 2 years. Guess we do have quite some time to find out who the mystery lad is. 12

Saloni out of patience
Genelia ties the knot?
Saloni has gone ahead and signed director Raja Vannam Reddy’s latest venture ‘Ammayi’ opposite a bunch of non-stars. Post the stupendous success of Maryada Ramanna, this new film might not be the right choice for her but she has run out of patience. She has already waited for four months for a big film. But Lady Luck favored Sunil instead who has his kitty full right now. He is to be seen in RGV’s Appalraju & several other directors and producers are waiting for his dates.
The actress, who usually takes gossips in her stride, is disturbed by the latest news doing the rounds – her alleged marriage to long-time friend Ritesh Deshmukh. Genelia rues that soon after such baseless reports started flowing in, there was a huge discord in her family and she had to explain to everyone about it being a rumor. She further says “I am not married to anyone. Whether I am in love with Ritesh or not is a personal matter. I don’t want to go into it. If I am marrying someone I don’t have to do it in secret. I am not a coward. I shall publicly announce my marriage.”
Sugar Candy Mumaith Khan
She is the sexy item bomb of Telugu Cinema with some ravishing assets that can lure any superman. With her luscious thighs and meaty moves, Mumaith Khan is one of the most admired Item Girls of modern Telugu Cinema. The hot babe recently started her production company ‘Sugar Candy Entertainment’ and is said to be planning to produce some telefilms & documentaries. The buzz is that she is also planning to come up with a talk show, on the lines of Mohanbabu’s daughter Lakshmi Manchu’s Lakshmi Talk Show.

NEWS
TOO COOL A CITY! Hyderabad experienced the most severe winter in 5 years when the temperatures dropped well below 10’ C with a few places reporting as low as 8.9’ C. The meteorology department explained that a string of events led to the sudden drop in temperature. The easterly winds from the Bay of Bengal and the Westerly winds from the Arabian Sea are apparently the main reasons. Adding to that was the active north-east Monsoon that had the temperature plummeting in northern India as well. The coldest temperature ever recorded in the city was 6.1’C on the 8th of Jan 1946.
SAINA ENDS THE YEAR ON A HIGH Saina, the world#4 ended the year on a high by winning the Hong Kong Super Series title and successfully avenging her quarter final ouster from the Asian games 2010. She triumphed over Shixian Wang of China in a marathon of a final that lasted 1 hour and 11 minutes. She went on to quote “I am very happy that I am finishing the year like this. It is like a dream come true”. Saina who has never lost a final that she has entered, thanked her coaches and her parents for all the support. She went on to term this the best win of her career. Go girl!

The Chronicles of
‘Arnia’ Sana Mirza
Who needs a lion & a witch when you have a huge wardrobe? Make a stop at Arnia, the newest addition to the list of clothing stores in the city! The Syllabus of Style, as its tagline defines it, Arnia has some fine-looking ghaghra-cholis, sarees, salwar kurtas, tees and evening dresses.
Owner and designer, Sonia Punwani believes that the prerequisite to dress any woman is wholesome inspiration. Designing women’s wear is like taking different pieces of a puzzle, then mixing them all up and creating something completely unique. Ms. Punwani loves to travel and uses her experiences from different places to design all of her clothes. She derives her main inspiration from the Far-East which she showcases through her kurtas, sarees and pillow covers. The original jewelry takes shape with ideas from Jaipur, Africa and jades from Hong Kong. Simple, versatile, and sexy silhouettes serve as the backdrop for the bold patterns. For now, think chiffon and brocade saris, silk and polyester printed kurtas, short-sleeve dresses, tee shirt fabrics and nets. You can give your wardrobe a makeover without really burning a hole in your wallet. Apart from clothes and accessories, Arnia also stocks pillow covers, hand designed photo frames and soft furnishings. It’s your one stop shop to deck up!

There are two things that are timeless: great advice and the appeal of a well-groomed individual. Thus we’ve decided to bring these worlds together to present you with a collection of the best grooming advice ever uttered. So avoid social suicide & take note of these ten common grooming mistakes!
18
January_ctc.indd 18
1/3/2011 1:31:16 PM
10 Sporting Too Much Cologne Too much of a good thing can spell disaster and that couldn’t be more true than with cologne. A few extra spritzes can turn even the subtlest of scents into a cloud of noxious fumes. All you need is two to three sprays in the right places. Targeting pulse points on the wrists and behind the ears should be enough to keep you going all day (and night). 9 Not Using Moisturizer Growing a proverbial thick skin is a great thing for survival in a crazy world, but going the literal route by forgoing moisturizer could kill your chances for fighting fine lines and wrinkles. Male skin may look tough, but it’s so fickle that a simple shower can leave it dry and cracked like drought-ridden earth. Irritation from shaving just adds fuel to the fire. A lightweight moisturizer with a hint of SPF should be applied daily to the face and neck to replenish water content, soothe skin and provide protection from the elements. 8 Dirty, Uncut Nails While startling, the sight of a wellgroomed man with overgrown, cracked nails is not terribly uncommon. Nails should always be clipped short but never so short as to expose the nail bed, which can be an incredibly painful experience. And get over any reservations you may have about manicures and pedicures. Forgoing regular nail care by a professional can lead to uneven nail growth and unsightly fungal infections. It’s essential to treat yourself once every four to six weeks in order to get your nails clipped and filed properly, and most importantly, have your cuticles trimmed down. You can skip the polish. 7 Dry Shaving Despite advances in electric razor technology, dry shaving is still rough stuff. Most men neglect to exfoliate and use proper lubrication when going dry, which can result
in razor burn, ingrown hairs and a shave that isn’t as close as it should be. Shave during or after a shower when the beard is softest, and apply an exfoliating face wash to clear away dirt and debris. Then, most importantly, use shaving gel and a clean razor to get the maximum shave with minimal irritation. 6 Using Worn-Out Razors Disposable razors are just that: disposable. The problem is that even the most experienced shavers forget that the cartridges have a relatively short lifespan of roughly two weeks. Using a blade past its expiration date can wreak havoc on your face by unevenly ripping hairs out of the follicle and leaving burned, bleeding skin in its wake. A healthy blade should glide along the face and cut with painless precision. Fortunately, today’s best razors have an indicator strip at the top that lets you know when its day of reckoning is near. 5 Using Too Much Hair Gel The only thing worse than using no product at all is piling on enough to turn your head into a helmet – the sound of crunchy hair is one that’s better left in the late ‘80s. Gloppy gels are child’s play and don’t leave much room for movement, so go for lighter pastes and putties that create shape and definition while still maintaining a natural appearance 4 Ignoring Thinning Hair Only a few lucky men will never have to face the facts of life with thinning hair. Male pattern baldness can start in your 20s and progress at a steady rate of 4% a year until you’re left with patchy growth or nothing at all. The right haircut can minimize the appearance of bald spots, but it’s not going to stop the path of destruction. Surprisingly, over-the-counter serums are proven to slow down the process and even re-grow hair in many cases. If that’s not enough to cut your losses, talk to a dermatologist about prescription
treatments. And when all else fails, shave it clean. 3 Ignoring Nose and Ear Hair Almost everything you do in life, from careers to dating, requires you to sell your face. And the most distracting (and nauseating) thing to look at is overgrown nose and ear hair. These hairs are important for filtering debris and ultimately keeping the body healthy, but they cease to have any purpose when they make an unwanted outdoor cameo. Use a small grooming scissor to keep the crowd at bay. 2 Unkempt Facial Hair Treating your beard like a summer camp arts and crafts project is the quickest way to looking like an artist rendering on India’s Most Wanted. If you have a thing for perpetual scruff, you can keep your mane tame without looking like a criminal. Shave just up to the jaw line to create a look that is neat yet effortless. A few extra days’ worth of growth is fine, but don’t let your beard achieve mountain-man proportions. And if it takes too much of your time to maintain a five o’clock shadow, a beard probably isn’t for you. 1 Letting Body Hair Run Wild Hair on the body is an undeniable outward expression of masculinity. But there comes a point when a jungle of hair needs to be pruned back. Invest in a trimmer with adjustable settings and clip hair especially on the chest and stomach to an appropriate but natural-looking length. You can avoid getting stark lines of demarcation by making use of the variable settings. It takes a little practice to get it right, but trimming body hair ultimately makes the difference between being a beauty or a beast when you wear an open collar.

SECRETS OF AN IDEAL WARDROBE Jyotika Naidu
Every girl has felt that fantastic rush of adrenalin when she sees something really cute and stylish at the store. What do you do in such a situation? Fetch the piece and hurry to the changing room, and then, after you fall in love with it even stronger your brain stops working and you can barely estimate the real practical value of the piece for your wardrobe. The result - your closet is bloated but you still have nothing to wear. You get your wallet and a handbag and go shopping again. Full circle! Want to avoid that? Read these simple but useful secrets of an ideal wardrobe.
1. The higher the heels the better! It is common truth that high heels make legs look longer and more slender. But you might not be aware of one more fact – heels give you diversity. It means high heels can suit anything from formal suit to casual denim outfit. The rule is: the higher the heel the easier you can adapt it to the occasion. Average-height and kitten heels are stable and comfy, but they aren’t as versatile. Spike heels are the best but if you can’t walk well in those, opt for high chunky heels of an unusual shape.
2. Size and Fit are important! All your clothes should be right for your size and fit perfectly. If they don’t, you feel awkward and look bad. Besides, pay attention to the balance of your figure and proportions. For example, the ideal top length is just below your belt. A short jacket looks great with jeans, shirt or t-shirt. Cropped pants should finish at the widest part of your ankle and will look good with high heels, flats or ankle boots.
20
January_ctc.indd 20
1/3/2011 1:31:18 PM
3. Classic rocks! Instead of fully renewing the wardrobe every season, you can invest into classic pieces that will always be in fashion. They will be the basis of your wardrobe which you can dilute using bright details. Classic pieces worth investing into:
6. Find a perfect fitting pair of jeans.
9. Fuss.
I will be right in saying that jeans are the basic item for lots of people. So, it’s essential to focus on the good pair. Make sure your jeans finish just 5mm over the bottom of the heel.
Research has proved that we decide on buying a piece in the first three seconds from the moment we see it. It’s too little. So, fuss & take your time to understand whether you really need it or not.
- Jacket in Chanel style
7. Be careful with vintage clothes
10. Break rules!
- Neutral colored shirts and t-shirts
A vintage outfit will turn you into the queen of the night or the girl who has no taste in clothing. When you look for vintage items, be very careful about how the look suits you. Instead of looking chic you can end up looking scruffy.
I know I’ve just listed the rules you should follow when creating looks. But rules can be broken sometimes. For example, if your shoes match your bag which matches your scarf, you’ll look good but too traditional. Create an accent on something that will show your inventiveness. Black dress with bright shoes is a perfect decision but adding just another bright detail is too predictable. Black with red is beautiful but black with silver is more unexpected.
- Leather Jacket - Little black Dress
4. Play with color! It’s elusive to think that if you fill up your closet with pieces of total black, you’ll have a versatile wardrobe. You need color to splash to avoid looking like you’re at the office all the time. There are a couple of ways you can change your style using colors. For instance, a bright t-shirt seen from a V-sweater or a cardigan, loud accessories with a classic suit or a simple dress will look appropriate both at work and at the party.
5. Invest into basic things first Have you ever planned your look around a brooch or a scarf? I have, and I was wrong. It’s always effective to buy expensive and basic items first: a dress, suit, etc. When you have those, start looking for less significant items like accessories or small details.
8. Let your imagination fly. If you have an item that you like very much but it just doesn’t fit in your look, don’t hurry to put it away. Think for a minute and make necessary corrections. Experiment with belts because they can change the silhouette. Don’t forget about brooches, scarves, kerchiefs and other stuff. Buy transformer stuff, look at the street style of other people, and runway looks. The livelier your wardrobe, the better!

FEATURE STORY
Going International Sana Mirza
“Education costs money, but then so does ignorance.” Sir Claus Moser once said. Financial crises have come and gone but in spite of that, parents are pulling all stops to ensure their child receives quality education, even if it means compromising on lifestyle. The education scenario is coming of age in the metropolitan cities in India with people comprehending the significance of an education that is at par with international standards. Thus International schools are popping up like mushrooms in the monsoon. Every international school in Hyderabad boasts of state-of-the-art infrastructure, first-class facilities and superlative academics. So how do you decide what is the most fitting and suitable option for your child? Hyderabad Life gives you a head start.
Parkwood School International Education is not preparation for life, education is life itself. This is a core belief at Parkwood School International. A fully residential, co educational school located at a distance of 60 km from Hyderabad, Parkwood provides a complete and contemporary educational experience for today’s child. Apart from academic and sports, it incorporates activities like weekend clubs in their curriculum to ensure the overall development of kids. The students, during their tenure with the school, hone and acquire skills that in times to come will help them to not only be competitive but also have the necessary leadership qualities.
Academics
Fact File
Established in 2003, the school provides classes from grade 3 upwards, and is affiliated to IGCSE and CBSE. Since their first 10th class graduation batch in the year 2006, the students of this school have topped twice in English in IGCSE throughout India. The students do not exceed 20 per class, ensuring attention towards each child. Parkwood also has a special division for students with learning difficulties and qualified teachers who work with the differently–abled students on a one-to-one basis.
The fee structure ranges from Rs.1,55,000 to Rs. 3,20,000 depending on the grade in which the student is, and is inclusive of uniform, tuition fees, accommodation, food, recreation and medical facilities. Gymboree Playing and learning are inextricably linked. Gymboree is the global leader in classes for kids, and their aim is to foster confidence and creativity in children of the age group 0-5 years. Hyderabad has India’s first and only Gymboree centre which was started in January, 2008. Nikita Khanna, marketing manager at Gymboree, says, “Gymboree, more than a playschool, is a programme where parents and children can together enter the world of play and imagination”. They strongly encourage parents to attend these programmes because parents can provide unparalleled emotional support to the child during their most formative years. The programmes are for children upto the age of 5 and are divided into 7 levels based on the increasing capability of the child. There is no teaching. Instead, they encourage growth in social, emotional, physical and intellectual fronts. They believe in assisting the natural growth
process that each child goes through. They don’t have teachers, but enthusiastic facilitators who help each child optimize his/her potential. Facilitators are allotted groups of 1012 kids each. Fact file There are three types of classes – Play, Music and Art. It costs anything between Rs.400-600 per class. CHERUBIC BEAUTY
Talk about the clichéd beauty meets brains. This multifaceted multi-talented girl is not just a looker but a smart one as well. She could very well have held the proverbial pen as a journalist but Preetika chose to get into tinsel town to prove herself. And boy, aren’t we glad she did! And as if that wasn’t enough, this angelic beauty wants to sing playback someday. Did we mention that this star sibling is writing a book too? Phew, without further ado, here’s the spotlight on this beautiful lass who is gracing the silver screen & also shining lights in the IQ Dept. Sneha Veronica brings you more…

An actor, a model & a journalist… You seem to wear a lot of hats. Tell us how it all began. Well, I am born & brought up in Mumbai. I did my Mass Comm in college and started writing for a friend’s magazine. I then progressed to news dailies & even did the Bollywood column for a South magazine. That was where Director Manigandan spotted my picture in my column & approached me. Before that, I used to model a lot. I’ve done over 45 campaigns internationally. Wow, a journalist, huh? So how does it feel to be sitting on the other side of the table giving an interview? It’s surprisingly comfortable yet kind of surreal. Shoot your questions, I am ready for them [laughs] You started out in commercials at the age of 19. Was acting in movies always on the cards? I always knew that movies were something I would love to get my hands dirty in. It was a dormant wish of mine. I had reached this point where modeling became monotonous as all I had to do was look happy & sell the product. The timing of my auditions couldn’t have been more perfect. I was lucky to get that opportunity. You have even acted with Amitabh Bachchan in a Cadbury’s ad, tell us about working with him… Yes, that was my first ever TV commercial. First up, I was finalized from an all-India audition. I never expected to get selected in the first place. He was the ultimate icing on the cake. He is the perfect gentleman. When I told him that this was my first ever TV assignment, he helped me a lot, gave me tips, encouraged me, clapped when I gave a good shot & even complimented me. He is just amazing. How are you handling all the fame & adulation coming your way? Oh, it is so awesome. After my film released, my facebook account got about 1100 friend requests.
January_ctc.indd 30
I even have fans messaging me from Kerala & places like Sri Lanka & even Malaysia. Describe a typical weekday & a typical weekend for Preetika. I am a total workaholic, sometimes I don’t even realize the weekend has come and gone. That said, I like to balance business with pleasure. Whenever I take a break, I ensure that I have a good time. I have this huge bunch of cousins with whom I hang out a lot. We watch movies & go on long drives. It is a very close-knit circle. How much did your sister Amrita Rao influence you? She never really told me what to do in life. Entering films was totally my choice. At the same time, when I took the decision to get into movies, she guided me. But then, she isn’t too familiar with the South Indian industry either. So there wasn’t much that she could help me out with. That said, she encourages me a lot & we do discuss about acting. Why did you choose the Tamil industry to make your debut? Nothing like that, I was offered a Tamil movie first. That’s why I did it. It could well have been any other language. I am open to any type of movie. The beauty about acting is that it can cross the barriers of language. My movie is now being dubbed into Telugu as well. So you can soon see me on Telugu movie screens too. [smiles] What is your best asset? I am a self-motivated person. I like to think that I have the hunger to achieve any target I set my eyes on. If you had to change something about yourself, what would it be? I would like to be more optimistic in life.
1/3/2011 1:31:54 PM
Preetika – the Model, Writer or Actress The actress, definitely! Acting gives you an opportunity to do so much, it’s an open canvas that I can fill in with my talent & emotions. It’s something that my future generations like my grandkids can watch & remember me by. Where do you see yourself in the future? I would like to be remembered as a good actress, not as a glam doll. I don’t really want to go after awards. Nominations are enough for me to prove my worth [smiles]. Someday, I would love to do playback singing as I am formally trained in music. And then I want to write a book as well. There are just so many things to do. It’s a Pandora’s box. A message for your fans… Thank you for your support. I am out there on social networking where you can interact with me. Thanks again for your fabulous response, I won’t disappoint you with my future roles. Are you single or taken? Single & loving it. What does a guy have to do to land a date with you? Hhmmm… he just has to ask me, I guess. If I like him, I would go for it. What are the 3 most important things you look for in a man? Honesty – he has to be true to himself & the rest of the world. He has to definitely have a good personality & be independent as well. If you were guy for one day, what would you do? Date Katrina Kaif If you could give a dating tip to men, what would it be? Never try to date women online! That’s a definite no-no on my list. If you were on a deserted island, and
January_ctc.indd 31
could bring one person & 3 items, who & what would those be? I never want to be stuck on a deserted island [grins] What inspires you? Young people achieving greatness What gets you high? AR Rahman’s music What gets you low? Lying & Cheating
Your proudest moment… The premiere of my first movie
What do you like to splurge on? Clothes
Your most embarrassing moment… Yet to come
What’s your beauty mantra? Proper Grooming

ROYAL STORIES OF HYDERABAD
Shivaranjani Reddy
Kbdpc!ejbnpoe-!uif!nptu! fyqfotjwf!qbqfsxfjhiu!fwfs" The Jacob Diamond is the seventh largest diamond in the world. It is now preserved amidst tight security in the safe vault of the Reserve Bank of India. Yes, after all a diamond deserves the safest place, and of course the cozy comforts of a safe vault. But Jacob diamond was not so fortunate before it became the property of the Indian government. You may not guess even in your wildest dreams that a diamond the size of a hen’s egg would serve as a mere paperweight. The Jacob diamond just served the purpose of a paperweight on the royal table of the last Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan. persuasion by the merchant and his royal aides, Mir Mahboob Ali Khan decided to purchase it. The deal later got struck in a price controversy and the Nizam believed that the diamond he had bought had brought ill luck with it.
A diamond as a paperweight? One may not believe it. But we are talking about His Exalted Highness, Mir Osman Ali Khan, the richest man on earth till he died in 1967. And what would the richest man of his times use as a paperweight other than a diamond, one of the most expensive ones ever mined. Diamond and a diamond alone would fit his majesty’s royal table as a paperweight. Well, the story about this fabulous diamond goes thus. One day in 1891 a Jewish merchant from Baghdad, Alexander Malcon Jacob, visited the darbar of the Nizam VI, Mir Mahboob Ali Khan, carrying a large diamond said to be weighing about 400 carats or 80 grams. The diamond was so big that the Nizam did not initially evince any interest in it. However, on
So he threw away the diamond in such an unimaginable place (in one of his shoes and the Nizam did not wear the same pair of shoes again) that it stayed secure for the next 30 years. His son, the Nizam VII, Mir Osman Ali Khan, accidentally found it and used it as a paperweight for the rest of his life. The Nizam purchased the diamond for about Rs 20 lakh. It is now valued at more than Rs 1500 crore. The Jacob diamond is perhaps the only diamond named after its seller. No one knows how the Jewish merchant got hold of it. But since the Nizam VI and the Nizam VII did not evince any interest in it, they did not bother to change its name. The diamond continued to be called after the merchant, and not after the royal dignitary who had paid an asset to purchase it. Before the diamond
came to the Nizam’s durbar, it was called the Imperial or the Great White Diamond. The Nizam was arguably the richest man of his times. According to a cover feature carried by the Time magazine in 1937, Mir Osman Ali Khan had a daily income of $5000 while the jewels he owned were valued at $15,00,00,000. Besides this, the Nizam had gold worth $25,00,00,000. All his assets put together, the Nizam was worth $140,00,00,000 in those days.
Unfortunately, the Jacob diamond now available was cut. Now it has 58 facets, and weighs 184.5 carats or 36.90 grams. Hyderabadis had two rare occasions when they had a glimpse of the Jacob diamond a few years ago. So, the next time the government holds an exhibition of the Nizam’s jewels in Hyderabad, do not miss the opportunity to admire the beauty of this Nizam’s paperweight.

HYDERABAD OF YORE
Did You Know? The now dilapidated Bachelors’ Building near Moazzam Jahi Market had pre-paid electricity meters way back in the 1930s. The moment the money in the pre-paid card was consumed, the power supply would go off. It was perhaps the best way in those days – even now – to prevent power theft. Pay first and then use electricity was the concept then. The fabled Falaknuma Palace had the world’s biggest electricity switch board made by Osler. The palace in those days had its own petrol bunk and a fleet of luxury cars. The Falaknuma Palace was virtually deserted for almost 100 years after the death of Nizam VI, Mir Mahboob Ali Khan. It was opened occasionally. The Nizam had his own currency – the Osmania Sikka. Hyderabad was the only princely state in the British India to have its own currency and postage. The Nizam VII, Mir Osman Ali Khan, lived an austere life despite being the richest man of his times.

TRON LEGACY Cast: Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde Director: Joseph Kosinski Producer: Steven Lisberger, Sean Bailey Music: Daft Punk A treat for the eyes, but not so for the mind! A sequel after almost 20 years should have come up with a better story line and could have certainly tied up a lot of loose ends in the movie. TRON: Legacy will probably be a big hit with technology fetishists, but it won’t inspire the kind of furious dorm-room debates that the first TRON film or more recent mind-benders like Inception did, mainly because its plot doesn’t hold up against the most elementary of logical stress tests, the most obvious of which is: How did the Grid survive all these years while the computer servers that hosted it were powered down? Even though it’s a disappointment in almost every aspect, the landmark achievement in visual effects, sound and production design more than make up for it. A must watch, especially in 3D on the biggest screen available.
TEES MAAR KHAN Cast: Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Akshaye Khanna Director: Farah Khan Producer: Twinkle Khanna, Shirish Kunder Music: Vishal–Shekhar
Farah Khan has done it for the third time. What we mean to say is that she has made an absolutely absurd movie again. The movie defines the nonsensical genre. The only saving grace would be the item number ‘Sheila ki jawani’. Talk about overkill of everything. We sometimes do enjoy mindless comedies but a joke such as “Boss, dhoop aa raha hai... Accha? Jao suraj ko bolo thoda baju me hatneko!” is unbearable. Even a kindergarten kid would get punched on the face for cracking a joke like that. A cast with Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif and Akshaye Khanna could have delivered an amazing movie if there would have been an attempt to trap their potential. This is a movie that can only provide you cheap thrills.

NAGAVALLI Cast: Venkatesh, Anushka Shetty, Richa Gangopadhyay, Kamalini Mukherjee
Director: P. Vasu Producer: Bellamkonda Suresh Music: Guru Kiran It is never easy to pull off a role made famous by the legendary Rajnikanth. Comparisons are bound to be drawn and it is never fair when compared to Rajnikanth and Vadivel in their respective roles. However seen as a fresh story, Nagavalli is watchable and certainly enjoyable. Director Vasu has his priorities right in scripting and addressing the story to his viewers. He makes sure everything is perfect – the cast, crew, the taking, performances and the denouement but either due to the repeated viewings of the first part, or the capacity of the audiences to guess and connect the happenings in the sequel, the element of thrill goes for a toss. It isn’t chilling, frightening nor has too much of a shock value to warrant an A certificate, but certainly interesting enough to have you seated till the end.
KATHA SCREENPLAY DIRECTION APPALA RAJU Cast: Sunil, Swati Director: Ramgopal Varma Producer: Kiran Kumar Koneru Music: Koti Katha Screenplay Direction Appalaraju is all about Appalaraju (Sunil), who is from Amalapuram and wishes to become a director and make a film. Later his dream comes true and he names his movie ‘Nayaki’. What happens next is anyone’s guess. Ramgopal Varma has already run into controversy with the title song of the movie. This song has been written by Kaluva Sai and it’s already a hot discussion topic in Filmnagar as it doesn’t mince words against any director, right from K Raghavendra Rao to Boyapati Srinu of Simha fame. After a long gap of 12 years, RGV is wielding the megaphone for a Telugu film. It is produced by Koneru Kiran Kumar of Shreya Productions’. Sudhakar Reddy handles the camera.

DHOBI GHAAT Cast: Aamir Khan, Monica Dogra, Prateik Babbar, Kriti Malhotra
Director: Kiran Rao Producer: Aamir Khan, Kiran Rao Music: Gustavo Santaolalla Written and directed by Kiran Rao, Dhobi Ghat (Mumbai diaries) is the story of four people from very different backgrounds, whose worlds intersect and leave them forever altered. Shai (Monica Dogra), an affluent investment banker on a sabbatical, strikes up an unusual friendship with Munna (Prateik Babbar), a young laundry boy with ambitions of becoming a Bollywood actor. She has a brief dalliance with Arun (Aamir Khan), a gifted painter. As they find themselves drawn into compelling relationships, the city finds its way into the crevices of their lives, separating them even as it brings them closer. Fragments of their experience – seen through a naive video diary, black and white photographic images and paintings - form a portrait of Mumbai and its people bound together as they journey through longing, loneliness, loss and love.
127 HRS Cast: James Franco, Kate Mara, Amber Tamblyn Director: Danny Boyle Producer: Danny Boyle, Christian Colson Music: AR Rahman
127 Hours is the new film from Danny Boyle, the Academy Award winning director of 2008’s Best Picture, Slumdog Millionaire. It is the true story of mountain climber Aron Ralston’s (James Franco) remarkable adventure to save himself after a fallen boulder crashes on his arm and traps him in an isolate canyon in Utah. Over the next five days, Ralston examines his life and survives the elements to finally discover he has the courage and the wherewithal to extricate himself by any means necessary, scale a 65 foot wall and hike over eight miles before he is finally rescued. Throughout his journey, Ralston recalls friends, lovers (Clemence Poesy), family, and the last two people he ever had the chance to meet. A visceral thrilling story that will take an audience on a never before experienced journey and show what we can do, when we choose life.

BOOK REVIEW
JRR Tolkien Sana Mirza
“Fantasy is escapist, and that is its glory. If a soldier is imprisoned by the enemy, don’t we consider it his duty to escape? If we value the freedom of mind and soul, if we’re partisans of liberty, then it’s our plain duty to escape, and to take as many people with us as we can!” - JRR Tolkien There is little doubt that Tolkien’s epic The Lord of the Rings has been enjoyed by more readers, both young and old, than any comparable set of books. Reading his works became something of a cult following during the 1960s, and it still continues to enthrall us nearly fifty years later. Hyderabad Life pays tribute to the English writer, poet, philologist, and university professor on his 119th birthday.
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born to Arthur Reuel Tolkien and Mabel Suffield on 3rd January 1892 in Bloemfontein. Because of his father’s death when he was three, Tolkien’s mother relocated to Birmingham with him & his brother. Tolkien was a bright student and a fast learner. His mother was skilled in penmanship and had excellent command over Latin, Greek, and French. She taught both her sons these disciplines. Tolkien could read by the age of four and could write fluently soon

Tolkien started imagining the world and mythology of Middle-earth and never ceased working on its stories and legends. As a father, he liked to narrate stories of hobbits and elves to his children. At first such stories were simply fairy tales and the first book, which made him famous worldwide, “The Hobbit”, published in 1937, was written in the genre of a fairy tale. The book was a huge success and the public demanded a sequel. Thus, he spent twelve of his best years writing The Lord of the Rings, finishing it as he approached his 60th birthday.
afterwards. Tolkien’s joy lay in books, their pictures and words. His imagination was supremely visual and would comprehend his images primarily in words. He was amazed by the beauty of Celtic and Germanic languages, finding a whole new way of apprehending the world. He took to Finnish later on and concocted “Naffarin,”, thus serving as a precursor to Quenya – the elvish language that Tolkien would later devise. Tolkien married Edith Bratt in 1916 and had four children. Soon after, he participated in the battle of Somme. After the war ended and Tolkien settled into marriage, he began to ascend the academic ladderfirst as a researcher for the Oxford English Dictionary, then as a tutor in English at Leeds University, and finally as Professor of English Language and Literature at Merton College in Oxford. This last appointment came when Tolkien was only 32, and he held it for 35 years. He began to write the mythological and legendary cycle which he originally called “The Book of Lost Tales” but which eventually became known as “The Silmarillion”.
Although the greatest master of fantasy passed away, he left the door open for anyone to an enchanting world of his stories, the key to which is love, kindness and loyalty, the qualities that helped Tolkien’s characters to win over Evil.

GIZMO CORNER
When it comes to smart phones, Microsoft is itching to get back in the game. So the world’s largest software maker went in for a complete overhaul, building their new OS – the Windows Phone 7 right from scratch. The entire design of Windows Phone 7 is unabashedly consumer focused and pleasantly easy to use. Think of it like a magazine you can flick through. After a long time since the Apple iOS, Microsoft has truly delivered a “fresh start for the Smartphone”. Let’s see why Microsoft claims it is ‘a different kind of phone’.
Live Tiles
People’s Hub Peop The Windows Phone 7 has the people’s hub feature which brings your contacts and other social media really close together. What it effectively means is less clutter and brings your Facebook and contacts together.
It’s the only phone with Live Tiles which makes it quick and easy to do things users frequently access. In other words, the Start screen on Windows Phone 7 puts what’s most important to phone users front-andcentre, making it obvious and accessible. Like how you would pin programs onto the taskbar in Windows 7.
Pictures Hub The pictures hub enables you to click pictures and send it to Facebook or other social networking sites from the same place. Microsoft has also leveraged its Zune platform in the music and video hub which makes syncing from your PC, and carrying your collection really easy. The FM radio is an advantage and the hi-res screen is great for videos and movies. After using Zune’s platform over the years, I can safely say that it’s much better than iTunes dull and plain vanilla platform. Did I mention Xbox live feature on Win 7 Phone?
Office Hub How about managing all the Office features on your phone with Office Hub? Now that’s what you call Productivity on the go. So not only you have regular Excel, Powerpoint, Word but OneNote as well. OneNote is capable c of voice clips and all the office applications can be synced wirelessly!
Applications There are plenty of apps that are supported on this phone. Though not many may apply in India but sooner or later they will. So you can use maps, news, Netflix, IMDB, eBay, and other 3rd party apps on your Windows Phone. The success of the Windows 7 phone is still to be determined but the quality of screen and the specifications that Microsoft has made mandatory for manufacturers ensure you get a powerful smart phone. The new version may also have a smaller screen and will thus be priced lower to suit developing markets like India. Here’s to hoping that happens soon. 46

First 3D Classroom in India
Now learning will be more fun and scoring will be easy with better understanding of subjects in science and mathematics with the help of 3-D classrooms. Texas Instruments has launched its first pilot of 3-D learning solutions in Queen Mary’s School, New Delhi. The school was also provided with a 3-D DLP projector from BenQ, 3-D content from Designmate and 3-D glasses from Xpand, free of charge. The 3-D content for subjects like Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics will explain the subject in a more intelligible manner with interactivity built into the content and teaching methodology. The deployment of 3-D learning solutions ushers in a completely new system of education in Indian schools and is likely to make a deep impact on the teaching as well as learning methods currently practised in the country. The access to knowledge is not limited to textbooks or teachers anymore. With the technologies and softwares supporting education, our teachers now have a new role to play.

GAMING
Gran Turismo 5
GT5 is an encyclopaedia of automotive delights. Six years in development and it’s finally here! The real GIGMO CORNER However, once the awe and the fascination fade driving simulator as GT5 is known is up against some away, you start to see the little problems that crop tough competition with NFS & Forza X360, up. It takes a lot of time to load and the menu, The game is all about detailing. Get behind the wheel although very stylish is absolutely low-graded in and you can literally feel the attention to detail. For terms of design. example, when you slam those brakes you can feel the In the end, GT5 is a great game. It has its flaws but screen move as the weight of the car shifts forward and we’re hoping future patches can rectify them. The the tail end as it curves. Exhilarating! Some tech-gyan – game is worth every penny you’ve spent! Google the way Polyphony (the game maker) tests all the cars that appear in the game and you’ll be surprised.
TRON: Evolution Tron Evolution bridges the gap between the original 1982 film and the upcoming sequel. You play as a System Monitor who is trying to stop Clu’s rise to power. Unfortunately, TRON: Evolution comes off as a repetitive neon version of Prince of Persia. All the cool things you’d expect in a TRON game are restricted to the limited multiplayer modes. The story is interesting as it expands on the universe and answers what happened to Flynn. The animations are stiff most of the time, preventing the more spectacular moves from looking as good as they should. Game levels are about ‘finding the only glowing thing in the dark, and running at it’. All said & done, the game-play could have been much better & is a big let-down. Non-franchise lovers could end up disappointed.

Call of Duty: Black Ops
The big daddy of first-person shooters has a new heir. Call of Duty: Black Ops takes much of what made Modern Warfare 2 great and slightly expands & modifies it. You begin the game as Alex Mason, a soldier being interrogated for information that he can’t remember. You play through his memories in search of info. There are a lot of twists, but unlike Modern Warfare 2, Black Ops does a wonderful job of cleaning everything up
for the finale. With a higher level of customization, the game is a great overall package that has a ton of content to enjoy. The multiplayer modes are largely based on what was established by Modern Warfare and the single-player is fast-paced with large set pieces. With more Zombie content than some full-fledged zombie games, Black Ops is certainly worth your time, even if you aren’t already a fan of the series.
NFS: Hot Pursuit
If you love racing in gorgeous Lamborghinis or Porsches, then you probably would want to check out Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit. There is no story here. You either play as a cop or a racer, and increase your rank as you trip people off the road, drift around
corners driving like a maniac. Along the way, you’ll earn Bounty to unlock new cars, expand your arsenal of weapons/gadgets and open new sections of the Seacrest County map. The focus is to drive these babies and not be worried about pimpin’ them. A new feature
online is the Autolog which compares you to your friends. If someone beats your best time in your favourite event, “Autolog Recommends” will track it and dare you to step up. Definitely a must-try!

HEALTH
MAKE FITNESS A SOLUTION, NOT A RESOLUTION I love a new year. It almost seems like we can start all over, & finally become that wonderful, productive, healthy, happy person we’ve always wanted to be. The trouble is, the enthusiasm to make changes, especially with exercise and diet, tends to fade once we realize we can’t change everything overnight. If you want to make lasting changes, there are some things you can do to make your resolutions work all year long. Adjust your attitude, change your lifestyle and come up with a plan for success.
If you have the wrong attitude about fitness, you’re already setting yourself up for failure. Most people look at exercise as:
• • • • • •
Punishment for bad eating An obligation Painful Time consuming Impossible to sustain over a long period of time Boring
If any of these sound familiar, how long do you think you’ll stick with your program? Nobody wants to do something painful, boring or obligatory. Before you throw yourself into weight loss, figure out whether these attitudes are true or just lies you’ve been telling yourself for years. Then, try a different perspective and look at exercise as: • A break from a stressful workday • A way to boost energy and mood • The only time you’ll have to yourself all day • A chance to get totally physical and let your mind rest • A chance to reward your body for working so hard • A way to improve your quality of life immediately
And here are some more key points about exercise that you must understand: 1. Willpower won’t work. Willpower is for short-term success. Long-term success requires planning, discipline and finding ways to motivate yourself every day. 2. Motivation will not magically happen. What motivates you will change from day to day. You have to recommit to your goals each day, tweak them to fit changes in your lifestyle & attitude and find new ways to motivate yourself over the course of your life. 3. You will not always want to exercise and eat healthy. Even the most committed exerciser doesn’t always want to do it. Know that you will have to work on it every day. 4. Diets don’t work. Stop wasting your time following someone else’s plan for you. Make your own plan based on realistic changes--if you can’t follow your chosen diet for the rest of your life, you’re wasting precious time.

This year, take a look at your goals and ask yourself: Are my resolutions out of control? Take a look at some of the extreme resolutions we sometimes make and alternative ideas for more realistic goals: 1. I will go to the gym and workout every day. Alternative: I’ll start with 3 days a week and gradually add more days as I get comfortable. 2. I will stop using my treadmill as an extra closet and start training for that marathon I’ve been reading about. Alternative: I’ll set a goal to use my treadmill a certain number of times a week. 3. I will find those dumbbells I bought last year and use them for more than paperweights. Alternative: I’ll buy a book or video about strength training or hire a trainer to teach me the best way to use my weights. 4. I will sign up for that daily 5 am aerobics class, even though I haven’t gotten up that early in...well, ever. Alternative: I’ll find a time that works best with my schedule and choose a class based on what I like, not what I think I should do. 5. I will never eat sweets again. Alternative: I’ll make a rule for myself that I can have sweets once a week to satisfy my sweet tooth without blowing my diet. 6. I will cook delicious, nutritious meals from scratch every night. Alternative: I’ll buy a healthy cookbook and try making one new recipe each week or month. 7. I will do a hundred crunches a day - no, TWO hundred! Alternative: I’ll educate myself about the best way to get flat abs and then figure out the best use of my time. 8. I will stop consumption of all alcoholic beverages, fast food, desserts, chips, cookies and anything that tastes good. I will eat lettuce and lemon wedges and I will like it. Alternative: I’ll choose one thing in my diet to focus on (example: eating a healthy breakfast, getting rid of sodas, etc.) and, when I’ve mastered that, I’ll move on to something else.s

Anorexia & Bulimia The trend to attain a Size Zero, which is considered sexy and beautiful, is catching up with both men and women. Being underweight is not something one should consider a compliment or a confidence booster. Young boys and girls around the world have a serious issue when it is a matter of weight, be it fat or thin. Bulimia and anorexia are as big health issues as obesity and should not be ignored.
in stringent diet plans and exercise, the misuse of laxatives, diuretics, and/or diet pills and a persistent concern with body image. It is important to realize that what makes a person Bulimic – as opposed to Anorexic – is not the purging, but the cycle of binging and purging. Purging is an attempt to burn off the calories of a binge, or fasting the day following a binge.
Symptoms of Bulimia • •
WHAT IS ANOREXIA? An individual suffering with Anorexia may be abnormally sensitive about being perceived as fat, or have a massive fear of becoming fat though not all people living with Anorexia have this fear. Anorexia is a unique reaction to a variety of external and internal conflicts, such as stress, anxiety, unhappiness and feeling like life is out of control. With a low self-esteem and the constant need for acceptance, they turn to obsessive dieting and starvation as a way to control their emotions. Some also feel that they do not deserve pleasure out of life, and will deprive themselves of situations offering pleasure (including eating).
Symptoms of Anorexia • •
Hair loss Pale or ‘grey’ appearance to the skin
• • • • • • • • • • • •
Dizziness and headaches Frequent sore throats Low self-esteem Low blood pressure Loss of menstrual cycle Constipation Bruised knuckles Bloodshot eyes; light bruising under eyes & on cheeks Perfectionist personality Mood swings, Depression, Fatigue, Insomnia
• • • • •
•
Dramatic weight loss Wearing loose clothes to hide body shape Obsession with weight Obsession with calories and fat content of foods Obsession with continuous exercise Frequent trips to the bathroom immediately following meals Self-starvation Visible binging Use or hiding use of diet pills, laxatives, ipecac syrup (can cause immediate death!) or enemas Isolation – Fear of eating around and with others
WHAT IS BULIMIA? Men and women suffering from Bulimia are usually aware they have an eating disorder. Some of the obvious behavioral signs can be recurring episodes of rapid food consumption followed by tremendous guilt and purging (laxatives or self-induced vomiting), a feeling of lacking control over eating behaviors, regularly engaging
Both disorders can cause severe health issues. Bulimia damages the digestive system & can affect electrolyte balances, which in turn damages organs. Anorexia causes the body to slow down to preserve energy which in turn has adverse consequences. In extreme cases, both lead to death.

Beauty Tips for the Winter It may be merry celebrations & good luck wishes all around. But as the short sunny afternoons melt away into cold evenings, the winter spells an illomen for your skin. Better be prepared with your army of moisturizers, cold creams and cleansing milk to fight away the elements that try to turn your glowing skin into a dry and parched piece of dirt. Here are some tips to keep your skin healthy & glowing through the winter…
Sana Mirza
• Switch to a richer facial moisturizer. Drier times call for more intense moisturizers. Apply thrice a day to your body and face especially before going to bed.
Tips:
• Make sure you apply sunscreen every morning. The sunscreen must have a (Sun Protection Factor) of 30 and above, with UVA and UVB protection. Sunscreens contain moisturizers, thus serving the dual-purpose of moisturizing the skin as well as protecting it from harmful ultraviolet rays.
• Give your skin abundance of water. Always carry a bottle of water with you wherever you go. Consuming tea can also be a good option during winters. It gives your body the extra moisture that you lose.
• Use a good petroleum jelly as a weather shield for your lips. At times, Butter can also be used to get extra softness and to cure chapped lips.
• Before taking bath, apply a little coconut oil on your body to get rid of the dryness. If you are using soap, then use a creamy one instead. Also, add a few drops of oil to bath water in order to retain the skin’s moisture. Avoid bathing with very hot water during winter because it can lessen the skin’s natural oils. • To clean your skin, use green gram powder paste instead of soap. Its regular use would leave you with soft and supple skin.
• Ensure you get your beauty sleep-7 hours is enough even if you cannot manage the full 8 hours sleep. • Our feet tend to be neglected in winter and need extra attention. Ensure that socks and shoes fit properly and dust your feet with non-irritating talc powder before enclosing them in socks and footwear for the day.
• Before you get out of the shower, switch to cold water for about 15 seconds and then back to hot water for 15 seconds. Repeat this for about 2 minutes. This simple hydrotherapy technique revitalizes the skin by stimulating blood flow throughout the body. • Avoid all chemical hair treatments, such as perming, straightening and coloring in the winter months. 56

A Spa’cial Ista Spa place! Sana Mirza
The Ista Hotel is a vast creamy structure where each space holds fresh visual delights, both in rich detail and in sheer scale. Despite its beauty, the hotel has absolutely no airs about it. Rather, it’s all quite happily laidback and homey. What bought me to Ista was its much spoken about spa. All of the spa’s essential treatments are taken from the Ananda Spa - the first and only world-class destination spa in India. International wellness treatments as well as Ayurvedic massages are the specialty at Ista, so I opt for the Ista fusion, a new addition to the list of pampering treatments and the signature massage from Ananda in the Himalayas. The therapist leads me to one of 6 beautifully appointed treatment rooms, 2 for Ayurveda, 1 for oriental therapies and 3 multipurpose rooms. The existing treatment rooms are all unique in style and theme, with everything neatly laid out from flowers to fragrant oils and
appropriately soothing piped music. The Ista fusion combines different massaging techniques in order to cater to an individual’s personal needs. A fusion of Thai, Swedish, reflexology, deep tissue, aromatherapy and Tibetan are blended together in this massage treatment for a powerful therapeutic effect. So I am seated on the sofa where my feet are placed in a bowl of stones immersed in water. The therapist then gently washes and rubs them. Then I’m laid out on the massage table, and after the therapist has done a little arti and rang the Tibetan hand cymbals, she gets to work with the appropriate counter balancing oils. She first rubs spice oil which consists of ginger, cardamom and black pepper on my back and arms for a good 10 minutes. There are about 2-3 treatments that she does over my stiff back. One of them is Effleurage – a Swedish massage. Then she performs the Ayurvedic Earth-Stone massage on my lower back. She also uses a deep
tissue rubbing technique around my spine. The Abhyanga massage was performed on my body, stimulating its natural energy channels and processes like a wake-up call. The massage sadly comes to an end after 85 minutes of purely intense pleasure. The therapist advises to wash off the oil only after 8 hours if one wants to gain maximum benefit from the treatment. This helps in an external as well as internal detoxification of the body. This massage is especially prescribed for people with specific physical problems. Martin Strobos –Mixologist, News Cafe Since News Café opened its doors in Hyderabad a few months ago, it has steered quite an infectious vibe amongst its residents. Nestled cozily at Inorbit Mall and overlooking the Durgam Cheruvu Lake, not only is it easily accessible to the IT crowd but is also ranked as the current favourite for party animals too. Down to earth and friendly, News Café was quick to assemble a list of loyalists. Hyderabad Life caught up with Martin Strobos, News Café’s flamboyant bartender and yakked about his journey, experiences and his opinions about the bar industry in India
The opportunity to explore a new market came to him when News Café was launched in Delhi, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Since News Café has plans of rapid expansion in India in the next five years, Martin is here to stay.
He is young. He is funny. And boy is he creative. Martin Strobos has been a mixologist for the past 7 years and has been flaring since the past 4 years. Prior to this, he worked for a chain called Cabana in his hometown of Cape Town, South Africa.
So why did he choose to come to be a part of the News Café frenzy? “I chose to be a bartender at News Café because both the Café and I have a lot of things in common. I like variety and this places is spread out in terms of food and events. It caters to everybody. Secondly, I am extremely easy going and laid-back and News Café isn’t really a fine dining serious kind of outlet either. It’s quite refreshing and relaxing.”
“My career interest always swayed towards bars & cocktails. Experimenting with different drinks and catering to different tastes developed a zest in me to do something different so here I am,” says Martin, beaming from ear to ear.
“There are a lot of bars in India but very few innovative bartenders. The people in India aren’t exposed to the real skill required to serve someone from behind the counter. A bartender needs to be interactive and entertaining at the same time. Guests normally don’t have the friendliest disposition towards bartenders and I am here to change that!”

Via Milano
Sana Mirza
Few things are certain in this uncertain world. Yes, you’ll die and pay taxes (Sorry.) And you will overeat at Via Milano (Less sorry: At least this one’s enjoyable). Via Milano’s menu is classically presented, with selections of imported meats and cheeses, pastas that are made fresh daily, as well as classical meat and fish dishes. In addition to dinner, the restaurant serves both brunch and lunch, with a focus on excellent cocktails to complement the quality of the cuisine. The menu is an amalgamation of the restaurant’s Italian head chef, Paolo whose specialties are rustic takes on Italian dishes. Start with the chicken Caesar salad with poached eggs, garlic croutons topped with just the right amount of avocado, basil, mayonnaise followed by goat cheese rolled in steamed bell pepper and red snapper fillet in potato crust. To complement your food, there are a wide variety of mocktails and cocktails to choose from. Via Milano showcases some fine desserts. Order either the creamy crème brulee or semi-fredo caramelized almond nougat. If you love coffee, do try a piece of their finest tiramisu. A mélange of fine cuisine, comfortable style and artistic flair, Via Milano embodies the Italian panache by which it was inspired, and provides the neighborhood with a welcoming place to dine, imbibe and socialize. Pick up & Go Sarvi Take-away
Sana Mirza
Seducing the city’s gastronomic disciples with its tasty and authentic Kebabs, Biryani and Mughlai curries is Sarvi, known for its delectable Haleem in Ramadan. All your cleanliness issues will be put to rest as Sarvi uses the latest in technology and the most refined machinery in order to serve you hygienic as well as healthy food. The Indian restaurant that made uptown cool has comfort foods like the Murgh Saagwala, and the Boti kebabs. Make sure you try the Irani Tandoori Murgh and the Banjara Kebab. Now the interesting thing about these kebabs is that they are made with the unique kebab machine. Why dirty those hands when you can get machines to do your dirty work, right? If you love the Haleem at the Sarvi during Ramadan, then you will definitely love their authentic Dum Gosht Biryani. If you are ordering take-out from Sarvi then we sincerely hope it’s a swanky celebration you are after. So what are you all waiting for? Pick up & Go!

Financial advisers say that cutting your coffee habit could save you a lot of money. Good point, you say, but you’re just as likely to cut off your leg & save on shoes. Next time you find yourself at Madhapur, in the middle of Chocolate Room and Talwalkars (what you choose is obvious), take a U-turn and head to C Factor instead. C Factor gives you the impression of one big living room (plush couches, tables, and knickknacks abound) with a gaming area on the other side. You can either cozy up with a steaming mug of freshly brewed espresso or if you need some grub to take the edge off all that caffeine, you’re in luck. On the savory side, go for their authentic margarita pizza or choose from a wide selection of sandwiches or sweet treats. If temptation strikes you, temper your sins lest you regret it later on. Try the chocolate bull’s eye or their cream tiramisu. Forget the calories for the night and just dig in! Fittingly, you can linger as long as you want. Another reason to put your money where your mouth is, so go ahead — pull up a chair and stay awhile. Address: Plot No. 42, Kavuri Hills, Beside Madhapur Police Station, Hyderabad. Ph: 040 4006 8853

WEEKEND TRAVEL
HAMPI
Sana Mirza
Ever wondered what it would be like to walk in the domain of royalty? Follow in the footsteps of the denizens of one of the oldest kingdoms in India? Well here’s a travel destination that caters to lovers of history & architecture as well as those just looking to kick back and relax – Hampi!
64
January.indd 64
1/2/2011 2:46:05 PM
Located in northern Karnataka on the banks of the Tunghabadra River, Hampi is around 350 kms from Bengaluru. The neighboring town of Hospet is 13 kms away and serves as the closest hub for road and rail connections. Hampi was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986 owing to the numerous historical ruins in the area, some of which date back to the 1300s. Apart from being one of the core areas of the Vijayanagara Empire, Hampi also holds a place in Hindu mythology as the kingdom of Kishkindha. The place is a visual treat for travelers with its several temples, the most popular being Virupaksha and Vithala. The Virupaksha temple is located at the west end of Hampi Bazaar (Market Street). The style of architecture dates back to the 11th or 12th century but continues to prosper & attract large crowds especially around February when they celebrate the annual chariot festival. The temple is a dedication to Lord Shiva and predates the founding of the Vijayanagar Empire itself. The Vithala Temple complex is one of the most unique temples one can
ever come across. Constructed in the 15th century, the temple has 56 musical pillars which, when struck, resonate at different frequencies that are assumed to have been a style of generating music for the local denizens. Also in the complex, specifically to the east of the hall, is the famous Stone Chariot with actual revolving stone wheels. Adding to the hype is the fact that most of the structures in this complex are carved out of single blocks of stone. Amazing indeed! Other sites worth visiting are The Royal Enclosure (also known as The Zenana Enclosure) that showcases the Lotus Mahal – a two-story summer palace for the queen that is shaped like a lotus flower from the top, the Elephant Stables – an imposing structure with a HinduMuslim style of architecture capable of housing 11 elephants at a time and the Ranga temple. The Queen’s Bath, the Underground Temple, the King’s Balance and the Audience Hall are picturesque areas for a stroll during the sunset. The Hazara Rama Temple is another architectural masterpiece that contains 1000 different carvings of Rama on the temple walls. Another landmark near Hampi is the Daroji Bear Sanctuary that houses the Indian Sloth Bears.

For the more adventurous at heart, Hampi is quite a formidable terrain for trekking and bouldering. There are many agencies and professionals who can aid novices or lead the more experienced to challenging areas. Another ‘must-do’ is a Coracle ride across the river near the Hemakunta complex. The coracle is a circular boat made from coconut trees and is capable of carrying 10-12 people making it a fun group activity as well. Some Coracle rides double up as tours where the boatman reveals little known fun facts about the place. Accommodation in Hampi is relatively easy to find with the abundant number of small hotels and guesthouses. All the facilities are basic but extremely comfortable. One may also choose Hospet as a base for an improvement in the quality of lodging, the drawback being the commute to Hampi itself. Apart from the usual Indian cuisine, there’s also Mediterranean and
Continental. The “Mango Tree” is a well-known restaurant that is walking distance from Virupaksha temple along the river and resides in the middle of a banana plantation. Wherever one decides to eat, the setting is bound to be scenic and special.
Hampi’s climate is generally dry & hot. March to early June is the summer. Monsoon brings some wet weather that typically lasts from late June to early August. The colder period of the year is from November to February. The rains can put a quick stop to your plans, as most of the sites are open areas. So the next time you’re planning a vacation with the intention of enriching your senses, getting back in touch with nature while keeping the damage on your wallet to a minimum, keep this historical capital in mind.

HOROSCOPE
CAPRICORN (December 22 – January 19) Hit a casino & gamble off everything that you own. You are going to make a fortune. If you are a guy, use extra protection as women are going to surprise you with unexpected gifts. Good time to try nudism as free expression is welcomed. To get lucky, go on movie dates. Entertainment and love is all abound.
AQUARIUS
(January 20 – February 19)
Ever wanted something so bad but you could not afford it, well yeah, this month is going to be worse. This is the best time to test your sexual orientation as it’s time for a thrilling and a very unusual love affair. Your freedom just keeps increasing so make the most of it, go ahead & rob a bank!
PISCES February 20 – March 20) Start a fling or risk losing your partner. Relationships are going to get really confusing and difficult. If you decided to join the gym after years of planning, then here’s a reason to delay it another month – you are prone to injuries. One advice – don’t get into fights!
ARIES (March 21 – April 19) Are you one of those hardworking nuts, who is never recognized? This is your month. Your boss and more importantly that person for whom you still go to office will be impressed. It’s okay to cheat on your spouse with this person because everything you do will be deemed correct this month.
TAURUS (April 20 – May 20) Don’t go hunting, as you will fall into traps laid by others. Be extra careful as you might even get sued and the Law isn’t really your best friend. Hit the Gym and work on your outward appearance.

GEMINI (May 21 – June 20) Go kick somebody you hate. Of course you’re gonna get kicked back, but at least you will throw the first punch and feel proud about it when you are in the ICU. Try working alone; as groups will turn on you. Our advice, take a trip to the Himalayas, meditate and maybe you get to start an ashram.
CANCER (June 21 – July 22) You are going to be a loner this month and it’s going to do you a world of good. Apart from thinking how best you can make better friends, you will also avoid being a prick around people. With a very paternalistic attitude, you will poke your nose into everyone’s business and try to resolve their problems.
LEO (July 23 – August 22) If you are single, you are going to be experimenting in bed this month! If you are married, you will get bored. Try and catch up with old friends, if they are hot and you are married, dump your spouse, at least for this month!
VIRGO (August 23 – September 22) Buy extra coffee and chairs for your home. Your social circle is going to grow. Try to get a house in a posh locality as most of these new friends are going to be rich. Get a makeover, you could become popular if you use your new friends wisely.
LIBRA (September 23 – October 22) Start touching whatever you can, it’s turning into gold this month. Convince your higher management to fire your boss and place you there, because you are going to rock at that position. If you are already there, fire all Librans reporting to you. Become a bookie, you have the ability to predict accurately this month.
SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21) Visit a Spa. Spend the whole month receiving exotic full body massages. A business opportunity is waiting to surprise you in the most unlikely place, so work on your image and most importantly learn to relax & not stammer.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 21) Run for presidency. Your hidden aura is shinning bright. You can hypnotize people with your persona. Do not look into the mirror; you could scare yourself to death discovering different faces of yourself that you never knew existed.

NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS WITH A TWIST Shadrach Thomas
Coming up with New Year’s resolutions is difficult, let alone following them. We put together a few of resolutions to help you choose from. They are not only essential but also eco-friendly. Just to clarify, your New Year resolution cannot be 1024 by 968 pixels. FYI, our resolution is to stop cracking PJs.
At Office • I will not bore my boss by with the same excuse for taking leaves. I will think of some more excuses. • I will think of a password other than ‘password.’ • I will stop sending e-mail, facebook, instant messages & be on the phone at the same time with the same person.
• • • •
I will do less laundry and use more deodorant. I will answer my snail mail with the same enthusiasm with which I answer my e-mail. I will balance my checkbook (on my nose). I will treat my girlfriend better, I won’t make her carry all the groceries the next time we go to the market.
At Home

Go Green • • • •
I will avoid taking a bath whenever possible and conserve more water. I will try to figure out why I *really* need nine e-mail addresses. I will take up some worthwhile new habit, like smoking – it helps keep tobacco workers in jobs. I will never again take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.
In Public • • • • •
I will not hang around girls - they think you love them and that sucks. I will not ring the stewardess button on airplanes just to get her phone number. When I hear a funny joke, I will not reply, “LOL... LOL!” I will stop saying,” Ooh, that feels nice” whenever the security guys frisk me at malls. I will not tell the same joke/story at every get-together.

HUMOUR
A Day
in the life of an unwilling
shopper
I
t’s boom time all around. Wherever I go, I see shops putting up boards that say “SALE” and inviting customers to walk in. I don’t get it. Why do shops use that word to attract customers? Isn’t the stuff in the shop always for sale? Does merely stating the obvious somehow extra-attract the ‘consumer’ in droves? Oh, and whenever you hear the word ‘consumer’, do you also imagine a fat guy sitting on the couch watching TV & eating pizza? Anyway, this is a very dangerous time for mankind. And I use the word in the literal sense that shopping is dangerous for men. Men do not shop. Men buy! It’s all about the utilitarian aspects like look good, be comfortable, no gay colors & is there parking outside the store? But for women, shopping is an Olympic sport and they train their whole lives for it. Apparently, it’s all about the experience. For a change, I couldn’t agree more although you will see that I mean it in a slightly different context.
I had to accompany a crazy shopaholic lady friend [henceforth referred to as CSLF] so that she could get some ‘retail therapy’ done. Little did I know what was ‘in store’, pun intended, for me. After three hours of meandering through 5 stores in a mall, she decides to buy these two tops. Now I’m no judge of tops and bottoms but both tops looked a similar brownish color. Now I notice the top she’s wearing. No prizes for guessing but you can guess anyways. Yes you’re right. Brown again! I did what I do best – Ask a question. At that time, it didn’t seem like it but in retrospect, I have to own up. That was one of the stupidest questions ever because all I got were weird answers. Here’s how the conversation ensued. Me: What’s with all the brown clothes? CSLF: Brown is the New Pink. – Weird Answer #1 Me: Huh? What happens to the pink ones then? Won’t people buy them anymore? CSLF: People will still buy pink because Pink is the New Black. [??] -Weird Answer #2 At this point of time, I was more confused than ever, yet I hung on in there and tried to get one more query clarified. Me: Errr…, o kay, but then what about the Black clothes? CSLF: Dude, Black Rules forever! Flabbergasted would be mildly describing my state of mind. And I quickly had to regroup my lost neurons. But the second wave of attack was already underway – in the lipstick section.

What is with Red lipstick an\d women who wear them? There are very few people who look good in red lipstick, and those clowns usually juggle for a living. Of course, there are a few women who are able to pull it off - Dimple Kapadia and Madhuri Dixit. But the fact remains, red lipstick looks horrible on most women, and all men. There have been literally thousands of names for the same color of lipstick over the years. Here are some actual names – berry juicy, candied apple, midnight red, love that red, volcanic red, red velvet, red reinvented, cherry desirable, opulent garnet, royal red, etc. How do they come up with such names for the same-yet-differentshades of red lipstick? Most of the shades are indiscernible from each other, but women insist that there’s a difference. And when you are adamant that all the above mentioned colors fall under only three shades of red – dark red, red and light red, you are called either color-blind or ignorant. Me, I’m called both! Hyderabadi men are always considered sort of Supermen, but it is with great melancholy that I reveal the secret of breaking them down. Shopping – that is our Kryptonite!
