Managing Director’s Note Back in the old days — that’s less than a decade ago and before there were such things as blogs and interactive conversations with readers — the custodian of a magazine used to respond to their readers with a ‘note’. Sometimes it clarified a point made in a letter to the editor. Sometimes it offered a correction. Sometimes it was just a simple explanation. An editor’s note was a handful of sentences; maybe four or five paragraphs. It was always a personal link between the editor and the reader. Only difference between it and today’s blog is the immediacy and the platform. Nevertheless, I shall strive on. Our cover girl this month is Bindu Madhavi, a girl with a lot of spunk and attitude. One of the few homegrown Telugu girls in the industry, her comments and nuggets reflect the wonderful journey she has gained. Turning to the more cerebral world of literature, we have Ayn Rand, a staple of bibliophiles across the world. From the serious to the light-hearted, we move onto the vibrant & vivid festival of Holi, everybody’s favorite festival! Check out our special feature & also some special Holi recipes that we have for you. If Holi gets you excited, then our weekend travel destination Coorg will thrill you to no end. Now is the perfect time to visit it people! Of course, I have to leave the cricket fans out of this. The World Cup is on in full swing and adrenaline is pumping everywhere! As we expand our kaleidoscope in the remarkable month of March, we invite you, our valued reader, along on a journey into this beautiful life… a life like none other… Hyderabad Life! Happy Reading!

REEL FASHION ILEANA, THE STORE

It’s a well known fact that her mother Sameera D’Cruz is the woman behind the fashion that actress Ileana adorns. Now the D’Cruz’s have taken their lethal combination of a perfect body with a perfect fashion sense to a totally different mode. Call it a gift to the public or a very smart strategic business move, the mother-daughter pair have ventured into retail business opening their first designer boutique in Hyderabad. The store which is dedicated to Ileana has been named after her as well. The designer boutique, situated at Inorbit Mall was inaugurated by Home Minister Sabita Indra Reddy on 13th February. The store caters to designer wear needs across different segments, especially the film industry. Farrah D’Cruz, Ileana’s sister would be heading the business operations of the store. Speaking on the occasion, she said “We are also in the final stages of finishing our online store which shall enable women from across the globe to buy Ileana’s designer wear with just the click of a mouse”. The store is a unique mix of a designer shop and an haute couture store with the customer having an option of selecting from an existing collection or getting their apparels customized in the VVIP lounge within the store. Adding to that, every time a new movie of Ileana’s releases, her boutique will sell the fresh stock related to the costumes worn by her in that particular film. The store in Hyderabad is said to be the first step in what is said to be a chain of many more stores across the country. If things go as planned, there will be a store opening in the US as well. The store will cater to all genres of fashion – right from casual wear to formals, party wear to traditional wedding collections, Ileana store will offer its patrons a range of designs to choose from.

HYDERABAD MAKES A NIGHT TO REMEMBER!! Hyderabad rocked away late into the night on Feb 16th thanks to the one and only Bryan Adams. The concert at Hitex ground witnessed more than 20,000 people and lasted for over two and a half hours. The excitement was pretty evident when Bryan Adams and his six-string took the stage by storm churning out his popular number ‘One night love affair’. The crowd released all that held-up tension. The pandemonium that followed was kept alive for the remaining concert with the “18 till I die” rocker belting out one hit after the other. Even the Tollywood crowd could not keep away from such an event arriving in full force. The city just could not get enough of his trade mark husky voice and the antics with his guitar that he broke into every now and then. The atmosphere was so electrifying that the visibly thrilled rock star screamed mid-way through his performance and declared “This is the loudest crowd I have come across in India so far”. He went on to dedicate his super-hit number ‘Let’s make a night to remember’ to the city and its people. How can we talk about Bryan Adams and not mention the summer of 69? This was certainly the crowning moment of the night but for one, who was even luckier as she was called on stage for a duet with the evergreen rock star. They sang “Baby when you’re gone” originally made famous by Bryan and Mel C of the Spice Girls fame. The terrific combination of Bryan Adams and guitarist Keith Scott who is termed ‘fastest fingers’ by Bryan Adams certainly set the night alive. He literally lit up the evening when he performed his love anthem, “Everything I do” when he coaxed the crowd to light up their cell phones and sway to the music. Before wrapping up the gig, he did promise to make it back to the city of Nizams soon.

THE WORLD CUP COMES HOME. Though the cup itself is not yet home, the World Cup matches certainly are. Fourteen years after it was last held in the subcontinent, the World Cup is again being held India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The tournament features 14 teams divided into 2 groups. The knockout stage has 8 teams entering the Quarter-finals, and 4 into the semi-finals. Each team would have played 9 matches in total out of which it would have survived 3 knock-out matches to win the cup. India has won the World Cup previously in 1983 and now the current side, led by Captain Cool MS Dhoni is touted as the favorites to win the competition.

HYDERABAD SCREECHES TO A HALT The bustling life of the city wore a very deserted look on 22nd & 23rd February due to the 48 hour Bandh called by the Telangana supporters demanding for early introduction of a bill for formation of a separate state. Commercial business remained closed as the police made elaborate security arrangements and imposed traffic restrictions in areas around the city in lieu of the ‘Chalo Assembly’ rally called out by students.

Reese and Robert, forbidden lovers!! Reese Witherspoon, who stars opposite Robert Pattinson in the upcoming film ‘Water for Elephants’, has said that she is ‘so lucky’ to have love scenes with the Twilight heartthrob. The legally Blonde actress went on to quote “He’s so amazing, wonderful, sweet and just the nicest guy too, so you can just add that to the soup”. The pair plays forbidden lovers in the movie where a young Pattinson is an aged Witherspoon’s son.

Jennifer Lopez may star as a guest judge on the Indian X-Factor’ which is originally a musical reality show in the UK. The desi version is all set to hit the Indian small screen. If JLo does become a judge for the reality show in India, then she would be the second high profile Hollywood babe to grace our small screen after Baywatch star Pamela Anderson scorched the screen on ‘Big Boss 4’. With the ever-rising popularity of reality shows in India, it`s highly possible that the pop star makes an appearance on the show.

Lady Gaga says no to sacrifices Pop star Lady Gaga refuses to make sacrifices in her professional life for a relationship. She maintains that her music career is her priority and she has no qualms if she remains single forever. Lady Gaga admitted tthat she fears rejection and went on to quote “I’d never let any man come before my career. I guess there’s some fear inside of me which makes me this way. My music is never going to roll over in bed one morning and tell me that it doesn’t love me anymore. I have a big problem with rejection,”

Paris Hilton getting engaged? After their recent trip to New York City, Paris Hilton and Her Boyfriend Cy Waits were spotted in Los Angeles looking very much in love, as they held hands while passing through the metro terminal. The couple was in New York to celebrate the hotel heiress’s 30th birthday. During their stay there, they visited the Jacob & Co. jewelry store where they browsed through the engagement rings collection. Though they did not end up picking up an engagement ring, Paris did walk out with a $25,000 white gold and black diamond encrusted ring.

Luxury Nursery for Nick & Mariah’s twins!

Hugh Hefner saves Hollywood… again! Hugh Hefner saved Hollywood and quite literally by giving away funds to the tune of $900,000 so that the Hollywood sign in California would stay as it is. It started a few months back, when governor Arnold Schwarzenegger told the world that they needed to raise funds to save over 138 acres on Cahuenga Peak, the place where the Hollywood sign stands. Though the Sign is owned by the Government, the land had to be sold for development purpose. This is not the first time that Hugh Hefner saved the icon of the movies, as in the past he donated money to recover some missing letters of the sign.

Singer Mariah Carey and her husband Nick Cannon have reportedly converted an entire wing in their Beverly Hills home into a super luxury nursery for their unborn twins. Apart from the Chelsea sleigh cribs costing $2,200 each, a Clara changing table that costs $2,800 and a $1 million sofa, the twins will also have a top-of-the-range sound system and they’ll each have diamond-encrusted iPods and a flat screen TV that comes down from the ceiling. Mariah also wants an 18-carat gold trim with ivory walls, soft furnishings and walk-in wardrobes full of Petit Tresor designer clothes for her yet to be born kids. Whew, this beats even silver spoons!

Paula Abdul, too precious to let go!!

This Valentine’s Day was one that Paula Abdul won’t forget for a long time. Her unidentified boyfriend had her hostage in his car. The ‘American Idol’ judge, who has often shed tears of happiness over a contestant’s audition, was reduced to tears again, though out of sheer panic. She called 911 and cried, “I wanna go, and he won’t let me!” Later, Paula told the operator that the matter was settled as he had agreed to drop her off. 13

Ranbir escapes IT personnel It’s a known fact that Shahid Kapoor was at Priyanka’s house when the IT raid happened and Ranbir would have had a similar story to tell had he not left Katrina’s house at the time he did, because, just 2 hours later the IT personnel’s landed in Katrina’s house. Apparently, Ranbir and Katrina had been meeting almost every night at her place after he finished his workouts at a gym nearby and even on the fateful day, he was at Katrina’s house till 4 in the morning. Close call, Ranbir!

Riya Sen turns Marriage Counselor! In her recent movie ‘Tere Mere Phere’, Riya Sen is married forcefully to Vinay Pathak. So when asked about her take on marriage in real life, Riya Sen woke up the philosopher in herself and went on to voice her opinion on what marriage meant to her and how to work things out for a blissful marriage. “Marriage is a very sweet relationship. It works only if we allow our partners to have their space. We need not try to change a person which then becomes a difficult job for both of us”, she said. When asked if it was okay to break up marriages, she was quick to add that there was no need to stress oneself if a relationship went sour.

Dia Mirza turns producer

Kangna Ranaut – the Wedding Crasher!

Dia Mirza has launched her production house Born Free Entertainment along with Sahil Sangha and Zayed Khan. For some time now, her films have not been faring too well at the box office. So why she is moving from acting to a much more risky zone of producing is anyone’s guess. She was quoted saying “I had an earnest desire to make entertaining, honest cinema. Films give me abundant joy. Belonging to the field of Cinema, I felt it was my duty to come up with entertaining films worth watching. When quizzed whether this meant the end of her acting career, she stated that she would still continue to act!

The mystery man in Priyanka’s life

While promoting her latest movie 7 Khoon Maaf, an unknown man managed to get under Priyanka Chopra’s skin during an interactive interview. The mystery man, apparently from Punjab, piped in to accuse her of “not being a Punjabi”. Though she initially laughed it off, she lost her cool and asked him to shut up after his repeated taunting. The man soon disappeared from the venue, but Priyanka, known to be extremely warm to fans, was hurt by the vehemence of the accusation.

As part of an innovative marketing strategy for their film ‘Tanu Weds Manu’, Kangna Ranaut and Madhavan are all set to crash weddings. The couple will assume their on-screen avatars and dance in a few random ‘baraat’ processions in Delhi. We think it’s a tad downmarket but hey, we’re sure they are fine with it as long as they rake in the moolah!

Farhan won’t sing for anyone!! Farhan Akthar has turned down a singing assignment once again. After turning down offers from AR Rahman and Rohan Sippy, he has now turned down Reema Kagti’s offer to sing a song picturized on Aamir Khan. Farhan was quoted saying “It’s not because I am possessive about my voice. I don’t know if my voice will work on anyone else. My singing adds to my performances. I don’t know if it would do the same for other actors.” He also added “If I feel really kicked about singing for someone else, I will. Singing is not a profession for me. As of now I’ll sing only for myself.”

The Biggest Fashion Shopping Mistakes 1. Don’t talk yourself into an outfit that isn’t flattering to your frame. There are only two kinds of clothes in this world. Clothes that flatter you and clothes that don’t! Avoid the latter regardless of how popular and trendy they are. 2. It is one thing to go shopping with your girlfriends because that can be very social and enjoyable but keep in mind – don’t shop with a competitive friend because she will cajole you into buying more and possibly unflattering items whether or not you need it. 3. If you are shopping for a dress to wear to a cocktail party, remember to bring your shoes. That way if you need to have in-store alterations you will be all set. 4. If you need to power shop, remember to bring a list. This can help focus your attention and keep you on task. 5. Nothing good will come from buying uncomfortable shoes regardless of how fabulous they are. 6. Don’t buy something you don’t need because it is a fantastic sale price. I know we have all done this but it is a waste of money and closet space. 7. Don’t buy on impulse. Ask yourself the following questions when deciding to buy. Do I need this? Does it fit with my lifestyle or wardrobe? Where am I going to wear this? If you are still undecided, then put it on hold and if you are still thinking about it at the end of the day – buy it.

Shads

Last year, it began with a thud against my back, instantly followed by a splash, soaking my shirt blue. Bright green, orange, and purple water sprayed in all directions as young snipers emerged from windows and rooftops to unleash their colorful liquid arsenals with a vengeance. The battle was upon me. Through airborne streams, I glanced over my shoulder to see which of the kids had nailed me. There he was, all of three feet tall, grinning at me as he reached into his bucket for another grenade. I sprinted to my house to load my own plastic weapon with dyed ammo and was chased by half a dozen pink faced, purple haired kids screaming Holi Holi Holi! After each home in the neighborhood received its fifteen minutes of fame, the whole squadron moved on to the next one, everyone singing and shouting! Complete chaos rules. Yeah, it’s Holi! War games aside, Holi is meant to be about love and community oneness. The full moon of the month of Falgun, the last month of the Hindu calendar, marks this colorful festival which has a three-dimensional significance. Firstly, because of the romance of

nature, which blossoms in the form of flowers and fruit on every tree, Holi is a festival of flowers and colors and it is associated with the divine lover Krishna playing with colored water and gulal (colored powder) with the gopikas of Brindavan. As an annual reminder of this celestial dance of joy, people go from house to house smearing gulal on the faces of their friends. Colored water is made by soaking kesariya flowers in water, and is sprayed upon all merrymakers with pichkaris. The whole atmosphere is alive with music, feasting, festive family gatherings and the antics of mischief-makers, who use the occasion to tease young girls. Holi, in this aspect, is equated to the spring rites held in many countries to which there are always erotic connotations underlining the revelry. As a harvest festival, Holi is celebrated on the full moon night with a community bonfire, around which people gather to give Agni (fire), the messenger of the gods, new food grains and sweetmeats as their seasonal offerings. Coconuts, bananas, sheaves of new corn, fruit and root vegetables, fresh from the

farms, are thrown into the fire during the fun and frolic around the bonfire. The next morning, the dust and ash of this holy fire is venerated in a ceremony called Dhulivandan. This dust is taken home by each community member to bring happiness into his house. In rural India, houses are cleaned, painted and decorated to welcome the festival. A third aspect of Holi is the celebration of the burning of the demoness Holika, the sister of the demon king Hiranyakashyapa, who tortured his own son Prahlad because of his devotion to Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashyapa asked Holika to lead the young Prahlad into a fire so that he would die while she, because of a boon given to her earlier, would escape the fire unscathed. By a divine miracle, Holika was burnt to cinders while Prahlad survived because of his devotion to god. This myth is also brought back to life each year as idols of Holika are burnt in the bonfires with shouts declaring the victory of good over evil.

Even though Holi is one of the most important festivals of Hindus, the fun and frolic is something that crosses all barriers such as religion, race, language, gender and age. The major significance of the festival in India is its ability to bridge the gap between social norms and move towards strengthening the bonds of love, brotherhood and unity in the society. It helps the whole community to merge into one big fraternity under the guise of colors. This truly unifying festival is celebrated to bid goodbye to the harsh winter and welcome the spirited spring. The highlight of the festival is the quality time that friends and families spend playing pranks on one another and getting everyone smeared in the colors of joy Love and unity are expressed through shared feasts, dancing, drinking, and singing songs, although the same can be expressed with paint and powder forcibly smeared across a loved one’s face. The festival is a great social leveller. By the time everyone has been covered in paint and colored water, it’s pretty hard to see any of the normal clues as to who belongs to what group, caste, creed or social standing. And because no one is likely to take designer clothes out for a soaking, there’s not much chance of seeing who is rich or poor either. No wonder, the vibrant colors of

India come alive during this festival which also happens to be one of the favorite festivals across age groups! Do you need scientific evidence to prove this statement? Last year, Holi was actually the happiest day in India. Facebook carried out a survey for ‘Gross National Happiness’ index by counting the number of ‘positive’ words used in status updates. Prominent days like Independence Day, Diwali etc were given happiness scores and Holi came first amongst all festivals and occasions! Hence proved! Holi is not just about colors. It’s also an excuse to gobble down the delicacies prepared specially for this day. Along with traditional dances, folk songs and food, the main attraction of Holi is the drink called Bhaang. Everyone gets an official chance to get intoxicated with this traditional drink.

and long lasting colors led to the use of synthetic colors which proved to be very harmful for the skin and eyes. But the rising awareness about the consequences of using synthetic colors brought us back to the era of using natural and eco-friendly colors. Whatever be the choice of color, nobody retains their original complexion by the end of play. Be it the friendly water balloon fights or just smearing faces of complete strangers with color, this festival is truly the most widely celebrated Indian festival. All kinds of differences are drowned in the colored water and the loud rhythmic beats of the Dholak make both young and old dance to the festive spirit. This festival is all about losing your inhibitions and participating in the most boisterous festival of all. Enjoy!

The arrival of Holi is well announced long before it actually settles upon the whole country in a haze of vibrant colors. The market is flooded with various shades of colors and the confectioneries start working over time. Originally, only natural colors prepared at home from the extracts of flowers and vegetables were used for Holi. However, the love for darker

Hyderabad Life catches actress Bindu Madhavi in a candid mood & discovers there’s more to this beautiful lass than meets the eye. With her disarming smile & expressive eyes, she catches us off-guard & enthralls us in a free-wheeling conversation about her life, career and passions‌

D DOE-EYE GIRL!

Hi, so how’s life nowadays? It’s great. I’m at a position where I am enjoying life, and more importantly all the work that is coming my way. I have three films on hand right now, Pilla Zamindar in Telugu and Veppam, Kazhugu in Tamil. I am kicked about all these projects. You’ve changed from that cutienext-door to hot new sizzler! Haha, I was always healthy, even during my modeling days. I was never conscious about it until I saw myself on screen and then decided that I would look better if I lost some weight. I work out regularly and indulge myself only on rare occasions. I think being the industry makes you self-aware of how you should present yourself. What did you have to lose to get here? Since I was a kid, I was always passionate about movies. But acting wasn’t my top career choice, to be honest with you. I was always more interested in becoming a model. I did start modeling right from college itself. Acting happened by chance, I grabbed that opportunity with both hands and here I am today! So how did entry into acting happen? When I was in college, I used to model part-time in Chennai & Hyderabad. Then Anish Kuruvilla, Director of Avakay Biryani happened to see one of my ads and he called me for auditions and there was no looking back!

You are one of the few Telugu girls in the industry. Tell us about your life growing up. My dad’s a government employee, so our family was never stuck to one place, every 2-3 years he used to get a transfer. I was a very naughty girl. By the time my teachers used to hate me, I used to get out of that place. I was not really good at studies. I was always a back bencher. So you were travelling all the time? Yeah, the worst thing is that I don’t have any childhood friends. I made up for it by making lots of friends in college. Tell us about your best experience so far. Just being in this industry is an experience in itself. Enjoying every day as it comes, I am just counting my blessings. The film industry is a wonderland and it never ceases to amaze you. But if you ask me to pick a special experience out of it, I would say my debut movie Avakay Biryani will always remain special for me. The whole movie was awesome and the entire team was like a bunch of friends hanging out & shooting out. The workshop training before the shooting, the practice sessions… everything was fun. What’s it like to be in the industry? I have so much respect for everybody who works in the industry. Right from the actors’ to the character artistes to the technicians & the spot-boys, it’s a great feeling to watch everybody in action.

S BEING Y A W L A T U O B A LOVE IS NE, BUT O E M O S R O F E R THE PACE WHEN S R I E H T M E H T GIVING IS VITAL Y T S E N O H . T I D THEY NEE HIP. IN A RELATIONS

life_mar_Final.indd 32

Where do you look at yourself today? I’m relatively still a newcomer. I’m starting out & everyone’s competition. Every day is a struggle. But like I said, I am happy to be here. Has acting changed your life? Especially your personal life. Earlier, I used to be very chilled out about my make-up and clothing. I never even used to carry lipstick in my purse. Then the tabloids started complaining about my so-called ‘scruffy’ appearance. So now, I have to consciously make efforts to dress up and look really presentable. Which has been your best compliment so far? Many people talk about my eyes & dimples but I love it when people talk about my work. That certainly makes my day. When Sekhar Kammula first saw my movie, he said I just didn’t look like a debutante. I was on top of the world that day. What about male attention? You must get a lot of it. Any crazy fans? There was this guy from Guntur who used to visit my sets everyday and ask me to marry him. Wow, how did you react? Well, I was scared for a while but he was really nice, he never really disturbed me or anything. I always used to keep him at a safe distance though. One thing you want to change about yourself… Oh trust me, there are so many things that I want to change. I’m lazy and my mom always complains. So that’s one thing. And I trust people easily. So I guess I should learn to be aware of people’s intentions. Physically I hate my nose & have always wanted to have surgery. Wow, that’s a brave admission. Care to elaborate? There’s nothing wrong with wanting a nose job. There’s a saying that

3/4/2011 5:47:06 AM

doctors give what God doesn’t. At the end of the day, if it’s bringing out a positive change in you, if it’s building your confidence, then there’s nothing wrong in it. It’s common in the film industry. But it should not become an obsession over small things. So you will get a nose job soon? Actually, I almost had it done. I got an appointment fixed but got cold feet at the last moment. What if something went wrong? What if my face got messed up? It was a scary feeling. Were your parents alright with your decision? My dad refused to let me go ahead with the nose job. The reason being, everybody says I got my grandmother’s nose. So he feels strongly against it. But I did manage to convince him.

life_mar_Final.indd 33

What about getting into movies? Were they supportive? Initially, there was lots of tension at home. My folks didn’t speak to me for a couple of months since they had a lot of negative perceptions about the industry. But I stuck to my decision. I was adamant. I had to convince my entire family including my grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins and all. And eventually, they understood that this was what I wanted to do and they support me now to the core. They are the best family. My dad gets really happy watching me on screen.

Your strengths & weakness My confidence, I am very independent, but sometimes it backfires. I have a hard time opening up. Tension keeps building up inside and I just burst out. Dream role… Any role of Angelina Jolie, I would also love to play a negative role like Ramya Krishna in Narasimha.

Do you think the casting couch exists in Tollywood? It’s just not Tollywood. Wherever you go, it exists. It happens everywhere. People tend to talk more about it in the film industry because it’s easier for them to do so.

3/4/2011 5:47:06 AM

I AM VERY INDEPENDENT, BUT SOMETIME ES IT BACKFIRES!

What’s your favorite pastime? Movies, Movies & movies. Give me some popcorn and I’m all set. Which is your favorite hangout in Hyderabad? N-Grill If not an actress… modelling definitely! Fitness Secret… Eat in Proportions! What’s your favorite cuisine? Italian & Sea-food Do you cook? No Dream Date… Pawan Kalyan Favorite Holiday Spot I have always wanted to visit Paris. Hopefully, I will be there this summer. Are you dating anybody? Nope, Single & Lovin’ it! What do you look for in your life partner? Compatibility! When do you plan to get married? As soon as I find my Mr. Perfect!

life_mar_Final.indd 34

3/4/2011 5:47:22 AM

If you get a chance to kidnap someone, who would you do kidnap? Pawan Kalyan, I would never release him! If you win 100 crores in lottery… Donate some of it & spend the rest of it all on myself! If you realized today was your last day on earth… I would go crazy! What is love to you? To me, love is about always being there for someone, but giving them their space when they need it. Honesty is vital in a relationship What is the one thing which you never wanted to happen in life? I am happy with whatever God has given me. 5 years from now… In a better position in the industry Message to your fans… Life is short! Have fun!

THE REGALIA CALLED HYDERABAD

SHIVARANJANI REDDY

Wow! What a Wonderful Dining Table! Dining table? What’s so wonderful about it? People will ask you if you are particular to draw their attention towards a dining table. While almost every home has a dining table and there’s no particular significance attached to it except for a few anecdotes of gastronomic delights, the dining table we are talking about is not an ordinary one. It is a royal dining table that befits the majesty of the Nizams of Hyderabad. Yes, it is the longest dining table in the world. The dining table that adorns the world famous Falaknuma Palace can accommodate 101 people, 100 guests to be precise and one seat exclusively reserved for the royal host. No royal place has the distinction of hosting such a “long dinner” with noble guests drawn from various nobilities, kingdoms, princely states and empires partaking food. The Nizams of Hyderabad were unique among the princely rulers in British India that they not only had the regal taste for the furniture, but also for the food served to the guests. Everything was unique, right from the way the guests were welcomed to the way the food was served. The dining table is actually made of seven pieces, all joined together in such a way that even a leisurely examination will not tell you that it is seven pieces put into one. When the dining table is so special, what about the special room where it is located? It is no ordinary room. The room was redesigned

keeping in view the special dining table and the specially invited royal guests. When the palace was built, there was no public address system, but the Nizam called his own sound engineers to ensure that the dining hall has a special acoustic system. A small whisper in any corner of the table can be heard by the guests sitting on any of the seats. The special acoustics system was designed so that every guest, whether sitting near or far away from the Nizam could exchange his or her pleasantries with the ruler. The dining table exists to the date, with the acoustics intact. More than 100 years have passed since the dining table was made by master carpenters from special wood, and it still tells us about the royal tales and interesting anecdotes it had been witness to when the royal Hyderabad was in all its full splendour. The Falaknuma Palace literally means mirror in the sky (Falak means sky; numa means show or exhibit or mirror). It was originally the residential palace of Nawab Viqar-ul-Umra, prime minister of Hyderabad. When Nizam VI,

Mir Mahboob Ali Khan, visited the place he was so moved by its beauty and grandeur that he bought it from Viqar-ul-Umra. The Nizam had added some structures to the place. He also added precious pieces of arts and artefacts to further enhance the splendour of the palace. The main building was completed in 1884. The Nizam VI had purchased it in 1897. The dining table had the honour of “serving” Prince of Wales, later King Edward VIII. The dining hall has five large beautiful Belgian chandeliers, giving additional royal touch to it. The hall has a large collection of rare pieces of marble sculptors, paintings, artefacts and portraits. The dining table was painstaking restored recently ensuring that the original charm was not lost. Do not you think it’s time we flew back in time to be the most honoured guests of the Nizam, occupying one of the 100 seats in the dining table, partaking the lavish dinner, and chit-chatting with the most magnificent of rulers in the British India!

HYDERABAD OF YORE

Did You Know? Nizam VII Mir Osman Ali Khan was the richest man of his times. He was featured on the cover of the Time magazine. His net worth in those days was two billion US dollars. According to economists, his wealth far surpassed the rulers of many kingdoms, including the British Empire. The Nizam VII had started what is called the “khanazad” concept. Khanazad literally means son of the palace. The Nizam felt that he should pay back his loyal soldiers and close attendants who had served him for long. The Nizam had selected their sons and paid special allowances. All that these Khanazad had to do was to present themselves before the Nizam twice a day, make a long bow to greet the ruler. The present day Women’s College in Koti was originally a palace built by Kamal Khan. The building still bears the initials KK, standing for Kamal Khan, the noble. The Nizam had purchased the palace from Kamal Khan. It is one of the few palaces still surviving the vagaries of nature and human encroachments. The grave of the mother of Nizam VII Mir Osman Ali Khan is located in King Koti, where the Nizam had lived. The Nizam VII had wished that his grave be located beside the grave of his mother. So he was laid to rest in King Koti palace and not in Mecca Masjid, where the graves of other Asaf Jahi rulers are located. The Nizam had a penchant for luxury cars. It is estimated that he had 200 cars including the most expensive automobiles. But he rarely used them.

The 83rd Academy Awards took place on February 27 at Hollywood’s Kodak Theatre. One billion viewers worldwide tuned in to the glitz and glamour of Oscar Night. The show itself was nothing to write home about as the first-time hosts Anne Hathaway and James Franco were clearly ill at ease & were a pale comparison of the world-class hosts that we are used to. While Hathaway sometimes seemed game in a succession of stunning dresses, poor James Franco looked even more uncomfortable than a man considering self-amputation. NO STRINGS ATTACHED Cast: Ashton Kutcher, Natalie Portman Director: Ivan Reitman Producer: Gary Barber, Jeffrey Clifford Music: John Debney No Strings Attached is a comedy based on the age old debate of whether a relationship can be built based purely on sex with no emotional connection whatsoever? Even though most of the movie is pretty much predictable, the problems faced by people in such relationships have been portrayed very realistically. Even though the end can be imagined frame by frame by just reading the title, the movie does manage to surprise you with things, which you did expect to happen, by cleverly timing the event to creep up on you when not expected. In this comedy, Emma (Natalie Portman) and Adam (Ashton Kutcher) are life-long friends who almost ruin everything by having sex one morning. In order to protect their friendship, they make a pact to keep their relationship strictly “no strings attached.” “No strings” means no jealousy, no expectations, no fighting, no flowers, no baby voices. It means they can do whatever they want, as long as they don’t fall in love.

PATIALA HOUSE Cast: Akshay Kumar, Anushka Sharma, Rishi Kapoor, Dimple Kapadia

Director: Nikhil Advani Producer: Bhushan Kumar, Mukesh Talreja Music: Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy Patiala House uses a not-so-frequently tried formula in Bollywood, venturing into a family drama interwoven with cricket. There have been very few movies earlier based on the same storyline and have met with relatively good success. In the movie, the plot could have revolved around any sport and not necessarily Cricket. Maybe the sport was selected keeping the Indian viewers in mind and not to forget the biggest cricket extravaganza that is underway. The film narrates the story of Gattu (Akshay) a second generation Indian in the UK who sacrifices his dreams and aspirations to live as per the terms set by his father played by Rishi Kapoor. But, life presents a second chance to Gattu after many years. The film showcases different emotions and is sure to moisten the eyes of the audience. It also conveys an under lying message that life always gives a second chance and that a person should never lose heart. 42

KATHA SCREENPLAY DARSAKATVAM APPALARAJU Cast: Sunil, Swati Director: Ramgopal Varma Producer: Kiran Kumar Koneru Music: Koti Some say Ram Gopal Varma intended KSD Appalraju to be a laughter riot for the viewer especially with the fun poked at the prominent industry people. Some don’t agree with it! Even though RGV is known for his effective screenplay, crisp, short and straight dialogues and on a whole, a master style of handling, these elements these were missing in Appalraju. He needs to understand that the objective of making a film is not just about fulfilling the director’s creative satisfaction. It is also about the satisfaction or to say the least, some entertainment for the audience. The story is about the perils that Appalaraju (Sunil) faces when he comes to Hyderabad from Amalapuram to fulfill his dream of directing a movie. He comes across different people from the industry with different attitudes and in a twist of fate, is forced to join hands with mafia don Srisailam Anna (Brahmi) who becomes the producer of this film. Doe he goes on to achieve his goal from there is anyone’s guess.

S.W.A.T FIREFIGHT Cast: Gabriel Macht, Robert Patrick, Kristanna Loken Director: Benny Boom Producer: Rui Costa Reis, Amanda Lewis Music: John Paesano Sony Pictures produces this movie which is a sequel to SWAT, the crime action thriller movie released in 2003. The sequel is based on a script written by Reed Steiner of the Nash Bridges fame. The plot revolves around Lieutenant Paul Cutler played by Gabriel Macht who is transferred to Detroit to put a local SWAT team through a training regimen. He finds himself to be a target of a Government killer named Walter Hatch played by Robert Patrick of Terminator II fame who blames Cutler for the death of his beloved played by Kristanna Loken, who incidentally is of Terminator III fame. With all the government officials backing Walter Hatch, will Cutler be able to save himself and his team?

Director: Yogesh Mittal Producer: Omprakash Mittal Music: Deepak Pandit The movie has a very interesting plot along with very capable actors. Anupam Kher who plays a renowned builder in town has a daughter who comes back to stay with him after completing her studies abroad. He a plays a doting father who lets his daughter have her way in life. The only that his daughter misses is their mother who had passed away while she was just a kid. Things slowly start to go wrong between the father and daughter when she finds a will left behind by her mother who died in a car accident. This sparks the fuel of suspicion and what happens next forms the rest of the movie.

DONGALA MUTA Cast:Ravi Teja, Charmi, Prakash Raj, Lakshmi Manchu Director: Ram Gopal Verma Producer: Kiran Kumar Koneru Music: Sathyam

The much-talked-about experimental movie has finished its super quick shooting and is now in the post production phase. Dongala Muta is said to be shot with a new technology which is very effective for action entertainers. The movie is said to have a running time of 2 hours with Ravi Teja and Charmi playing the lead. The other noted people in the movie are Prakash Raj, Lakshmi Manchu and Brahmanandam. The movie has zero Cost investment. None of the cast or the crew has been paid as they all have agreed to a certain share of the profit that the movie manages to generate after its release. This movie is certainly one of the most anticipated movies in recent times.

BOOK REVIEW

AYN RAND Ayn Rand, born Alisa Zinov’yevna Rosenbaum, (February 2 1905 – March 6, 1982) was a RussianAmerican novelist, philosopher, playwright, and screenwriter. She is known for her two bestselling novels and for developing a philosophical system she called Objectivism. Born and educated in Russia, Rand migrated to the United States in 1926. She worked as a screenwriter in Hollywood and had a play produced on Broadway in 1935– 1936. She first achieved fame with her 1943 novel The Fountainhead. Over a decade later, she published her magnum opus, the philosophical novel Atlas Shrugged, in 1957. Rand’s political views, reflected in both her fiction and nonfiction work, emphasize individual rights (including property rights) and laissez-faire capitalism, enforced by a constitutionally limited government. She was a fierce opponent of all forms of collectivism and statism, including fascism, communism, socialism, and the welfare state,

and promoted ethical egoism while rejecting the ethic of altruism. She considered reason to be the only means of acquiring knowledge and its advocacy the most important aspect of her philosophy, stating, “I am not primarily an advocate of capitalism, but of egoism; and I am not primarily an advocate of egoism, but of reason. If one recognizes the supremacy of reason and applies it consistently, all the rest follows.” Rand developed an integrated philosophical system called “Objectivism.” Its essence is “the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute.”

to an autobiography as I will ever write. It is not an autobiography in the literal, but only in the intellectual sense. The plot is invented, the background is not...” Without Rand’s knowledge or permission, We the Living was made into a pair of Italian films, Noi vivi and Addio, Kira, in 1942. Rediscovered in the 1960s, these films were re-edited into a new version which was approved by Rand and re-released as We the Living in 1986. Her novella Anthem was published in England in 1938 and in America seven years later. It presents a vision of a dystopian future world in which totalitarian collectivism has triumphed to such an extent that even the word ‘I’ has been forgotten and replaced with ‘we’.

Her first novel, the semiautobiographical We the Living, was published in 1936. Set in Soviet Russia, it focused on the struggle between the individual and the state. In the foreword to the novel, Rand stated that We the Living “is as near

THE FOUNTAINHEAD Rand’s first major success as a writer came with The Fountainhead in 1943, a romantic and philosophical novel that she wrote over a period of seven years. The novel centers on an uncompromising young architect named Howard Roark and his struggle against what Rand described as “second-handers”—those who attempt to live through others, placing others above self. It was rejected by twelve publishers before finally being accepted by the BobbsMerrill Company on the insistence of editor Archibald Ogden, who threatened to quit if his employer did not publish it.

ATLAS SHRUGGED Atlas Shrugged, published in 1957, was Rand’s magnum opus. Rand described the theme of the novel as “the role of the mind in man’s existence—and, as a corollary, the demonstration of a new moral philosophy: the morality of rational self-interest.” It advocates the core tenets of Rand’s philosophy of Objectivism and expresses her concept of human achievement. The plot involves a dystopian United States in which the most creative industrialists, scientists and artists go on strike and retreat to a mountainous hideaway where they build an independent free economy. The novel’s hero and leader of the strike, John Galt, describes the strike as “stopping the motor of the world” by withdrawing the minds of the individuals most contributing to the nation’s wealth and achievement. With this fictional strike, Rand intended to illustrate that without the efforts of the rational and productive, the economy would collapse and society would fall apart. The novel includes elements of mystery and science fiction, and

it contains Rand’s most extensive statement of Objectivism in any of her works of fiction, a lengthy monologue delivered by Galt. Atlas Shrugged became an international bestseller, and in an interview with Mike Wallace Rand declared herself “the most creative thinker alive.” Rand’s last work of fiction, it marked a turning point in her life, ending her career as novelist and beginning her role as a popular philosopher. After completing the novel of more than one thousand pages, however, Rand fell into a severe depression that may have been aggravated by her use of prescription amphetamines.

Breach

When it was first launched, the concept of online military shooter games was very exciting. The experience you had to build to earn the points and unlock new perks was unheard of and absolutely out of this world although the current generation of gamers have been there and done that. It still does provide endless hours of excitement if done the right way. Breach delivers some excitement, as an online first-person shooter action. It is a typical FPS with generic visuals and game-play. But it sure delivers the satisfaction that goes with taking out enemy players with a well-placed headshot from afar or emerging alive and victorious from a deadly close-quarters firefight.

FOR IT Core shooting action is fun Good assortment of game modes Maps have nicely varied terrain.

AGAINST IT Experience system makes earning perks and gear a grind Unremarkable visuals and sound Significant performance issues.

Majesty 2: Monster Kingdom Majesty 2 embarks on its best expansion yet, adding monster sidekicks and softening the difficulty level to the real-time king simulation. We really appreciate the bold and creative story line. The only drawbacks we found were the loads of input errors. Even the basic formula of the original remains unchanged which could get monotonous over a period of time. Monster Kingdom, the third expansion for the real-time king simulation Majesty 2, sees your titular character booted off the throne and sent into exile with just his sidekick for company. Scrambling to get back to power requires cozying up to the creatures that you spent most of your time killing in the previous entries in this franchise, which gives this add-on a different vibe from its predecessors and the number of core gameplay enhancements makes this campaign more playable.

FOR IT Innovative premise puts you on the side of the monsters you used to kill Not as insanely tough as the earlier expansions in the series Fair mission design that doesn’t demand trial-and-error experimentation.

AGAINST IT Doesn’t do much to evolve the basic Majesty 2 formula Loaded with typos.

Fallout: New Vegas - Dead Money

REVIEW

If there is one thing that stands out when you play this game is the number of traps that you need to escape. There is a trap waiting for you at every step. No doubt that it’s really thrilling and the sense of achievement is amazing when you clear a level, but there is a better possibility of you getting frustrated by the time you complete it. The trial-and-error frustrations diminish the impact of this add-on’s great characters and dialogue. In the game there are several jumping bits, but it is supported by unresponsive jumping mechanics. Fortunately, great voice acting and intriguing new characters provide a counterpoint to the flaws and inspire you to push ahead regardless of the frustrations.

FOR IT Excellent dialogue and voice acting bring the new characters to life At first, it’s satisfying to avoid or destroy traps A A good length for a good price.

AGAINST IT Avoiding hazards eventually gets tedious and annoying The villa’s mazelike streets are visually unappealing The forced stealth and escape sequences aren’t at all enjoyable. 53

The rugged looks of the G55 tell a tale of its rich pedigree, specifically bred to serve the military during the world war. Once inside, the stunning ruggedness turns into a very comfy luxury ambience. The demon inside the hood has a huge appetite of 5.5L. Add to it a V8 with 5 speed transmission and the result is a whooping 507 horses generating an insane 700NM of torque. Stamp the gas and you’re at 100 kmph just 5.5 seconds later. Too good for any off -roader! This beast does come with a leash in the form of the AMG breaking system and a chassis inspired by a sports car. Though these specifications are awesome, an off-roader needs

something more than just a 4X4 drive. It needs the 4 ETS (Electronic Traction System). In lay man terms, it redirects more power to the wheel that loses grip on the road hence ensuring that it gets the best traction, Simple as it sounds, it generate terrific traction. It is so effective that it provides one of the best, if not the best climbing capabilities with an impressive ability to tackle an 80% climb gradient. On the design front, the G 55 AMG sports titanium grey 19-inch AMG light-alloy wheels, radiator grille with three prominent horizontal louvers, flared AMG wings, two oval chrome-plated tailpipes, which add to the SUV’s sporty look.

Apart from all the big-picture attention, the small details that make a car complete have not been ignored. From seat heating function to an electronically adjustable front seat that provides you with an option of saving your preferred seating position, some of these details are a sheer joy to experience. Even the steering wheel automatically moves up thus giving the driver more space to move in and out of the car. Now that’s what we call attention to detail! Priced at a cool Rs. 1.1 crore (ex-showroom Mumbai), this car is now the most coveted vehicle on every autoenthusiast’s wish-list!

EDUCATION

DEAL WITH EXAM STRESS Roohi Naaz With less than a month left for most examinations, many students find themselves weighed down by expectations. Comparisons, parental expectations and peer pressure are major concerns for students attempting their board exams. These concerns bog students down, leading to severe examination stress. The term ‘exam stress’ can be broadly defined as a feeling of anxiety over one’s performance in the exams, the results and reaction of parents and friends; all weigh upon students to create exam stress. For those of you who are appearing for these exams, here are tips that can help minimise the stress.

Maths and Physics, simplified!

Are you afraid to fail?

i. Revision tips

iv. What to eat

Develop a timetable to monitor your progress. Make sure you allocate adequate time for fun and relaxation as well.

Food rich in vitamins and proteins, such as green leafy vegetables and fresh fruits, are a must.

While revising a subject, practice writing. This would be an actual simulation of the examination itself. Plan your revision and complete it in time. This will give you a sense of achievement and build your confidence.

The nutrients will help your brain stay sharp. Avoid food with high fat content.

While revising, vary subjects and their difficulty so you don’t get bored or disheartened. Set realistic targets of what you can achieve in the time available.

v. NO distractions

Spend as much time on recall as on reading. Practice by writing answers as you would do in the exam. This will help you remember the important points when you answer each paper.

Right now, the board examinations should be your only focus. Stay away from distractions that could cause loss of concentration or unwanted anxiety. Stick to activities that do not break your study continuum.

Practice writing answers under exam conditions. Take three hour tests, without a break in between, preferably at the same time as that of the exam. This will help your body clock adjust to the examination time and conditions.

Are you studying intelligently?

Help your child ace the exams ii. Time out To prevent mental fatigue, take a short break as soon as you notice your mind is losing concentration. Stick to activities that do not break your study continuum during these breaks. Avoid television and loud music. You will then be able to come back to your revision refreshed. It is important to relax. Your mind and body perform at their best only if you get adequate rest. iii. Maintain a regular sleep pattern A regular seven hours of sleep is mandatory for the body to function well. Also, sleep at a regular time; don’t alter your sleeping cycle. It is not important whether you study late or get up early, as long as you get into the habit of being most alert at the same time as that of the exam.

Don’t drink too much coffee, tea or fizzy drinks. Caffeine will keep you up and reduce the clarity of your thinking. Keep all unimportant issues at bay.

vi. The power of positive thinking Spend time with people who have a positive effect. It will rub off on you. Avoid negative thoughts, such as ‘Everyone else seems better organized, while I’m struggling.’ Challenge such thoughts with positive thinking; for example, ‘I have done well in exams before.’ vii. Practice relaxation techniques Practice deep breathing, meditation and yoga as forms of relaxation. They help your body relax and reduce stress. Alternately, take a brisk walk in fresh air after your day’s revision is over. If you believe in God, pray before you start studying. Prayer will help you increase confidence reduce your stress as well.

And yes, best of luck with those exams.

Try and stop working an hour before bedtime. You will find it helpful to do some muscular relaxation, which is particularly effective in relieving stress. 56

FITNESS

EASY-TO-DO EXERCISES @ HOME!

Towel work is indispensable in teaching shoulder girdle stabilization and correct movement of the arms. You will immediately appreciate the effectiveness of this work and the fact that you can practice it at home with an everyday piece of “equipment.” Here are two movements to get you started. The first introduces a basic action and the next elaborates it into a phrase of movement.

Simple Side Bend

Use this exercise to strengthen and stretch the muscles of the waist.

Step 1 Begin standing in a wide turned-out position with the taut towel directly overhead.

Step 2 Take four full breaths while slowly bending the body to the side: Divide the space between where you start (upright) and where you’ll end up (side bend) into four equal segments, one breath for each. Each inhale lengthens the waist and each exhale bends the body more to the side. Maintain proper alignment! Keep the shoulders anchored down, the abdominals pulled in tight and the hips centered over the legs.

Step 3 Inhale as you briskly bring the body back upright. Exhale in place, deepening the connection to your core muscles. Perform this movement twice on each side, alternating sides as you go. Then do it twice more, dividing the side bend into just 2 equal movements; finally, perform the side bend in one single motion, 4 times, side to side.

Shoulder Stretch with Contraction This movement includes articulation of the entire spine and a large range of motion for the shoulders. Only perform this if your shoulders and chest are flexible enough. If you aren’t sure, ask an instructor to determine your flexibility.

Step 1 Begin standing with legs and feet together, with the towel taut against the hips.

Step 2 As you inhale, circle the arms up and over the head in one continuous motion.

Step 3 Continue into a deep contraction, pulling the arms into the body, bowing the head and rounding the back. To finish the movement, reverse the sequence. Perform 8 times. Give the long circle of the towel a flowing feel, with a moment of suspension at the top of the movement.

Glutes Exercises

The gluteal muscles, or glutes, are one of the largest muscle groups in the body and an area that most people want to tone. Fortunately, it’s relatively easy to isolate and exercise these muscles. In this article, we’ll show you several exercises to strengthen and define your butt, including hip extensions and lunges. Let’s start this lower-body workout with donkey kicks, which work your butt and your lower back.

Step 1:

Step 2:

Step 3:

Assume start position as shown by kneeling down and supporting your upper body on your forearms.

Keeping your right knee bent, slowly lift that leg behind you so your foot raises up toward the ceiling.

Return to the start position and repeat with the left leg

HEALTH

ALL ABOUT HEART DISEASE

India has emerged as the capital of cardiovascular diseases with more and more people reporting heart ailments. Indians are by genes pre-disposed to certain heart problems, particular sudden or silent heart attacks. The World Health Organization has listed cardiac diseases as one of the leading non-communicable diseases causing death. But there’s no need to worry. Timely medical care and a few healthy tips will go a long way in protecting people from heart ailments, and prolonging the life of those already affected by heart diseases. The WHO says heart attacks are preventable, though they form the major “killers” both in developing and developed nations. Studies by WHO show that over 80 per cent of cardiovascular disease deaths take place in low-and middle-income countries and occur almost equally in men and women. Cardiovascular risk of women is particularly high after menopause.

is high or low, though occasionally there may be some symptoms. So it is mandatory that one should go in for regular BP check up. Another area of concern is diabetes. Those suffering from diabetes should make it a point to keep the blood glucose levels under check. If diabetes goes awry, it may lead to heart attack. Keep your weight under check and seek medical help immediately in case of heart attack.

Health experts the world over recommend that engaging in physical activity for at least 30 minutes daily will help to prevent heart attacks and strokes. One should also change the way one eats. Eating at least five servings of fruit and vegetables a day, and limiting the salt intake to less than one teaspoon a day, also helps to prevent the problem. Since high blood pressure has been recognized as one of the causes of sudden heart attack, it is necessary that one should go in for regular check up of blood pressure. We do not know whether our blood pressure 60

life_mar_Final.indd 60

3/4/2011 4:16:11 AM

What are cardiovascular diseases? According to WHO description, cardiovascular diseases are a group of disorders of the heart and blood vessels and include: 1. Coronary heart disease – disease of the blood vessels supplying the heart muscle 2. Cerebrovascular disease - disease of the blood vessels supplying the brain 3. Peripheral arterial disease – disease of blood vessels supplying the arms and legs 4. Rheumatic heart disease – damage to the heart muscle and heart valves from rheumatic fever, caused by streptococcal bacteria. 5. Congenital heart disease - malformations of heart structure existing at birth 6. . Deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism – blood clots in the leg veins, which can dislodge and move to the heart and lungs.

What are the risk factors? As per WHO norms, the most important behavioral risk factors of heart disease and stroke are unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and tobacco use. Behavioral risk factors are responsible for about 80 per cent of coronary heart disease and cerebrovascular disease. The effects of unhealthy diet and physical inactivity may show up in individuals as raised blood pressure, raised blood glucose, raised blood lipids, and overweight and obesity; these are called ‘intermediate risk factors. Stress is also one of the important issues.

What are common symptoms? Often, there are no symptoms of the underlying disease of the blood vessels. A heart attack or stroke may be the first warning of underlying disease. Symptoms of a heart attack include: 1. Pain or discomfort in the centre of the chest: 2. Pain or discomfort in the arms, the left shoulder, elbows, jaw, or back. 3. Difficulty in breathing or shortness of breath; 4. Feeling sick or vomiting; feeling light-headed or faint; breaking into a cold sweat; and becoming pale. Women are more likely to have shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, and back or jaw pain. The most common symptom of a stroke is sudden weakness of the face, arm, or leg, most often on one side of the body. Other symptoms include sudden onset of: numbness of the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body; confusion, difficulty speaking or understanding speech; difficulty seeing with one or both eyes; difficulty walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination; severe headache with no known cause; and fainting or unconsciousness. The WHO suggestions say that those experiencing these symptoms should seek medical care immediately.

Is there any treatment? Effective and inexpensive medication is available to treat nearly all CVDs. Survivors of a heart attack or strokes are at a high risk of recurrences and dying from them. The risk of a recurrence or death can be substantially lowered with a combination of drugs – aspirin, statins to lower cholesterol and blood pressure. Surgical interventions to treat CVDs include coronary artery bypass, balloon angioplasty, valve repair and replacement, heart transplantation, and artificial heart operations. As clichéd as it may sound, the adage ‘Prevention is better than cure’ holds true. The best way to avoid suffering is to follow a healthy diet, exercise regularly and live a healthy life. 61

RECIPE Hyderabad life Brings you the Recipes of the must-have holi Bhang drinks that will make you enjoy this Festival the traditional way! Savour these bhang drinks and celebrate this festival on a high!

Flavoured Bhang Drink Ingredients 2 cups water 1 ounce marijuana (fresh leaves and flowers of a female plant preferred) 4 cups warm milk 2 tablespoons blanched and chopped almonds 1/8 teaspoon garam masala (a mixture of cloves, cinnamon, and cardamon) 1/4 teaspoon powdered ginger 1/2 to 1 teaspoon rosewater 1 cup sugar Method Bring the water to a rapid boil and pour into a clean teapot. Remove any seeds or twigs from the marijuana, add it to the teapot and cover. Let this brew for about 7 minutes. Now strain the water and marijuana through a piece of muslin cloth, collect the water and save. Take the leaves and flowers and squeeze between your hands to extract any liquid that remains. Add this to the water.

HOT BUTTERED BHANG Ingredients Half a cube (1/8 pound) of butter or ghee 1/3 - 1/2 oz. Of Marijuana Leaves 8 ounces of Vodka 1-2 pinches Cardamom seed honey Method In a pan, melt the butter or ghee. Break up the marijuana leaves into the pan. Once the butter and leaves are hot and sizzling, add in 8 ounces of vodka. Be careful that the hot butter doesn’t make the mixture splatter. Pour the Vodka in swiftly to avoid problems. Continue boiling the mixture for roughly 30 more seconds, stirring simultaneously. Add a pinch or two or powdered cardamom seed while boiling. Once mixture has been boiled to desired amount, strain the fluids and mash the contents through a strainer. You should use a tool like a spoon to try and squeeze all the

Place the leaves and flowers in a mortar and add 2 teaspoons warm milk. Slowly but firmly grind the milk and leaves together. Gather up the marijuana and squeeze out as much milk as you can. Repeat this process until you have used about 1/2 cup of milk (about 4 to 5 times). Collect all the milk that has been extracted and place in a bowl. By this time the marijuana will have turned into a pulpy mass. Add the chopped almonds and some more warm milk. Grind this in the mortar until a fine paste is formed. Squeeze this paste and collect the extract as before. Repeat a few more times until all that is left are some fibers and nut meal. Discard the residue. Combine all the liquids that have been collected, including the water the marijuana was brewed in. Add to this the garam masala, dried ginger and rosewater. Add the sugar and remaining milk. Chill, serve, and enjoy.

juices out. Throw away the mush, or reboil to try and bet more juices out. Pour the liquid into two 4 ounce wine glasses. This Recipe serves two people. When you arrive at some places, you get the feeling that this vacation might haunt the rest of your life. You might leave the place after finishing your vacation and get back to work, but the place will never leave you. One such place is Coorg – whether you are one of those poetic souls who would like to mingle amidst mountains and romance nature or a typical Indian traveler in search to feel the tickle of a gentle breeze and watch leaves flutter in dance-like movements with sounds of birds filling the air, the place sure doesn’t let you down. A place with an incomparable scenic beauty, lush green valleys, coffee plantations, teak wood forests & majestic mountain ranges with a distinct culturefilled brave martial race of Coorgs (Kodavas), Coorg is a perfect getaway for couples, youngsters and families alike. Situated on the Western Ghats of Karnataka in South India, Coorg is an absolute treat for the adventurous with trekking, golfing and angling

options. And for the families, it is a perfect getaway with coffee plantations surrounded by unbelievable resorts. How to get there BY AIR The nearest airport are Mangalore (135 kms) and Bangalore (260 kms). BY TRAIN The nearest railheads are at Mysore, Mangalore and Hassan (146 kilometers).

BY ROAD From Bangalore, there are two routes to Coorg. Both routes are almost the same distance (around 250-260 kilometers). The route via Mysore, is the frequented route. The stretch after Hunsur is simply mind blowing with absorbing coffee plantations on either side. The other route is via Neelamangal, Kunigal, Chanrayapatna, all of which are located on the national highway. After

COORG

A perfect getaway to unwind amidst aromatic foliage

Chanrayanapatna, the state highway route takes you to your destination. Places to see MADIKERI Welcome to the Scotland of India Madikeri, which also happens to be the capital of Coorg. Apart from its misty hills, lush forests, breath taking views of coffee plantations, it’s also known for the lovely climate. Another added feather in its cap is the world record for the cardamom crop. KAKKABE Although most come here to pay tributes at the Padi Igutappa temple, you make sure to slurp at least a little honey as this is the largest producer of honey in south east Asia. The Padi Igutappa temple is Coorg’s most important temple and the presiding

deity of the Puthari festival. A trip to the honey farms will leave a sting of remembrance through out your life. OMKARESHWARA TEMPLE Built in 1820 by King Lingarajendra, it is a rare mixture of Gothic and Islamic architecture, as a dome in the middle of a square lake and minarets at each corner catches your eye the moment you step here. CAUVERY NISARGADHAMA Strictly for couples! If you do not have enough time or money to go to the virgin paradises around the globe, then here is a great place to cuddle up for the night. This 2.5 sq. km. large island in the middle of the river Cauvery, is some place to romance.

NAGARHOLE NATIONAL PARK Nagarahole, one of the best wild life sanctuaries in South India, is not easily accessible due to its geographical location which makes it all the more better as the place remains quieter than most other sanctuaries. Though it homes several wild animals like tigers, panthers, rhinos and wild elephants, you are more likely to see smaller animals like gaur, deer, wild dogs and langur. IRPU FALLS This one is for the fitness freaks. When we say freaks, it is literal. The hike begins a little away from Rameshwarna temple and goes all the way to the falls. An inviting pond that you will find half way through the trek is an ideal way to camp for relaxation.

ABBI FALLS After traveling seven kilometers from Madikeri town you will be welcomed with white wall of water creating a misty cloud with its moisture-like spray – Welcome to the Abbi falls. These falls are an incredible blend of rich aromatic coffee plantations with an amazing scenic splendor. It’s undoubtedly one of the most beautiful sights to see the water from the falls descending into a flowing stream to perhaps join with the river Cauvery somewhere in the vicinity. SOMWARPET Sky scrapping trees, surrounded by sweet-smelling coffee plantations

and a great spread of continuous foliage very gloriously prepared in an extraordinary operation by nature forms Somwarpet. This 42-kilometer, one-and-half hour drive is a joy in itself. Besides being the coffee heartland of Coorg, Somwarpet’s other claim to fame is the Basappa Club which is frequented by the medium and small gentlemen coffee planters, who meet here to unwind. Food and accommodation Though you can find a lot of hotels and resorts, home stay in Coorg will bring back the glory of ancient Indian culture... the sanctity of human life and respect it enjoys. Home

stays here, aims and ensures that it contributes to conserve local culture and heritage as well as creates a distinct, authentic and reliable tourist accommodation and experience. The stay here gives the tourist a personal experience of the life of people in Coorg. The price may vary anywhere from Rs 1200 – 3000 per couple per night depending upon the facilities. Coorg is also a dream destination for the foodies. Pork curry, Meen masala and Meen Barthad (fish fry and fish curry) are the non-vegetarian specialties while Jungle Mango Curry, Puttu and Kuluputtu are a must have for the vegetarians.

HUMOR

*BEST CRICKET SLEDGES* Wiki refers to sledging as ‘exchanging words with opposition players which can put them off their usual game; it is an attempt to ‘psyche out’ an opponent’. Cricket is a very interesting game, and sledging adds to it the extra spice that makes it much more than just a game. Here is a compilation of the best sledging related incidents, witnessed in the history of cricket... WG Grace Even the great WG Grace used to sledge albeit in his way. Once in an exhibition match given out leg-before, he refused to walk and told the bowler, “They came to watch me bat, not you bowl”. And the innings continued. Grace’s ability to stand his ground would have done Sunil Gavaskar proud. Once, when the ball knocked off a bail, he replaced it and told the umpire: “ Twas the wind which took the bail off, good sir*.” The umpire replied: “Indeed, doctor, and let us hope thy wind helps the good doctor on thy journey back to the pavilion.” The best WG Grace sledge was on him, though, not from him. Charles Kortright had dismissed him four or five times in a county game - only for the umpires to keep turning down his appeals. Finally, he uprooted two of Grace’s three stumps. Grace stalled, as though waiting for a no-ball call or something, before reluctantly walking off with Kortright’s words in his ears: “Surely you’re not going, doctor? There’s still one stump standing.”

Viv Richards Vs Gavaskar Gavaskar had decided to relinquish his opening position and come in at No.4 for that test. But Malcolm Marshall fired out Anshuman Gaekwad and Dilip Vengsarkar for ducks, setting the stage for Gavaskar to walk in at 0/2. And he thought there would be less pressure! Viv Richards says “Man, it don’t matter where you come in to bat, the score is still zero.”

Daryll Cullinan Vs Shane Warne As Cullinan was on his way to the wicket, Warne told him he had been waiting 2 years for another chance to humiliate him. “Looks like you spent it eating”, Cullinan retorted.

James Ormond Vs Mark Waugh James Ormond had just come out to bat on an ashes tour and was greeted by Mark Waugh. Mark: “Well, look who it is! Mate, what are you doing out here, there’s no way you’re good enough to play for England.” James: “Maybe not, but at least I’m the best player in my family.”

McGrath Vs Brandes (Another Classic) In a showdown of best pacers of two countries, Brandes made up for his complete absence of batting skills by some great sense of humor and presence of mind. Aussie paceman Glenn McGrath was bowling to Zimbabwe number 11 Eddo Brandes – who was unable to get his bat anywhere near the ball. McGrath, frustrated that Brandes was still at the crease, wandered up during one particular over and inquired: “Why are you so fat?” Quick as a flash, Brandes replied, “Because every time I make love to your wife, she gives me a biscuit.” Even the Aussie slip fielders were in hysterics.

Viv Richards v Greg Thomas This incident took place during a county championship match between Glamorgan and Somerset. Glamorgan quickie Greg Thomas had beaten Viv Richards’ bat a couple of times and informed the legendary West Indian ace, “It’s red, round and weighs about five ounces, in case you were wondering.” The very next ball was given the King Viv treament and smashed out of the ground into a river, at which point Richards piped up, “Greg, you know what it looks like. Now go and find it.”

Sachin Tendulkar Vs Abdul Qadir The year was 1989, the little master had recently made his debut in Pakistan. Not even old enough to get a driving license, Sachin Tendulkar was facing the best bowlers in the business. Even as the Pakistani crowd jeered and mocked Sachin holding out placards saying “Dudh pita bachcha, ghar jaake dhoodh pee”, (Hey kid, go home and drink your milk!), Sachin was sending the then young leg spinner Mushtaq Ahmed hiding for cover with two sixes in one over. The frustrated mentor of Mushtaq Ahmed, the legendary Abdul Qadir challenged Sachin saying “Bachchon ko kyon maar rahe ho? Hamein bhi maar dikhao!” (Why are you hitting kids? Try and hit me.) Abdul Qadir had made a simple request and Sachin obliged, and how! He hit 4 sixes in the over, making the spinner look the kid in the contest. The over read 6, 0, 4, 6, 6, 6. David had felled Goliath and a legend was born.

Merv Hughes Vs Cronje Merv Hughes was one of the greatest exponents of the fine ‘art’ of sledging. Once during a tour game in South Africa, Hughes was bowling to Hansie Cronje. It was an especially flat wicket and Cronje was hitting Hughes for fours and sixes all over the place. After the umpteenth boundary, Hughes headed down the pitch, stood near Cronje, let out a fart and said, “Try hitting that for six.” It was five minutes before the guffawing stopped and play could resume.

Hughes Vs Miandad The inimitable Merv Hughes has forgotten more about sledging than most people will ever know, so he was more than a little miffed to be on the receiving end in the 1991 Adelaide Test against Pakistan. Hughes and Javed Miandad almost came to blows after the Pakistani batsman dared to call big Merv a “fat bus conductor”. But revenge was sweet for Hughes. A few balls later, he finally got his man and as Miandad walked past, he could not resist shouting “Tickets, please!”

Ian Healy Vs a short chubby batsman In one of the tour matches in South Africa, Australia played Hansie Cronje’s province. Cronje was at the non strikers end, there was a short chubby batsman on strike. Ian Healy yelled to Warne, “Bowl a Mars Bar half way down, we’ll get him stumped”. The Aussies and Cronje were all hysterical, all this was before a classic reply from the batsman. The exact words – “Nah, Boonie (David Boon) fielding at short leg will be onto it before I can move.”

Dropped the Cup? Perhaps the most famous sledge in a World Cup match took place the epic Super Six clash between Australia and South Africa in 2003. South Africa looked on course to a routine victory with Australian captain Steve Waugh at the crease and on 56. At that stage, Waugh clipped the ball in the air straight to South African fielder Herschelle Gibbs. In his haste, Gibbs dropped the ball when attempting to throw it in the air in celebration. As he passed him, Waugh is said to have asked Gibbs: “How does it feel to have dropped the World Cup?” Waugh carried onto make an unbeaten 120 and Australia posted an unlikely win and won the World Cup a few days later.
