The summer holidays are nearly here, and with the kids off school and work shutdowns, it’s time to start thinking about having some fun in the sun.

I love to travel. We visited Porthmadog in North Wales recently, and it was really lovely. But there are also loads of places to visit locally - in and around Telford and Wrekin, Shropshire and the West Midlands.

In Telford we have swimming, golf, skiing, skating, climbing, attractions (like Hoo Farm and the Exotic Zoo), a UNESCO World Heritage site, and of course our lovely outdoor green spaces, local nature reserves and the Town Park, to name just a few.

“Live in the sunshine, swim in the sea, drink the wild air...” Ralph Waldo Emerson

Y

ou may have thought, like me, that the end of the pandemic would bring better times, but with the war in Ukraine, and the cost-of-living crisis hot on the heels of Covid it still a difficult time. With soaring energy and food bills causing concerns for just about every one of us, it seems like there is no end to the worries in sight, and this is causing uncertainty for many. There are some positives to look forward to with the return of festivals and bigger events to the area, that were not able to go ahead over the last couple of years, like the return of Telford Carnival on 17th July celebrating Telford’s people and places, heritage and future, and Telford Balloon Fiesta on 26th, 27th and 28th August with family fun and entertainment, plus Shrewsbury Steam Rally is back on Sun 28th – Mon 29th August - which should be great fun. ca l Lo

Summer Returns to

Wellington! The latest news and events for Summer...

Wellington celebrates Jubilee in style

Wellington’s Midsummer Fayre over the Queens Platinum Jubilee weekend was a resounding success, with the centre of Wellington packed with residents and visitors – including a ‘royalty through the ages’ procession. Joining in the fun were visitors from Wellington’s twin town of Châtenay-Malabry, France, who were visiting for the weekend festivities.

Wellington celebrates being ‘Shropshire’s Outstanding Community’ Over the weekend of 2 & 3 July, residents of Wellington opened their beautiful private gardens in aid of local Shropshire charity, Community Resource. The weekend concluded with a community tea party in the stunning grounds of Sunnycroft, with the Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire Anna Turner and High Sheriff of Shropshire Selina Graham in attendance to celebrate Wellington winning first place as ‘Shropshire’s Outstanding Community’ and to thank the many volunteers and organisations who contribute to the fabric of Wellington life.

Issue 56 - July & August 2022 Edition

Love Telford!

UK’s first off-grid bus station opens in Wellington, Telford... Every shelter is constructed using hundreds of recycled plastic bottles. The shelter roofs are also put to work thanks to a low-growing plant called ‘sedum’, giving back to nature with pockets of urban wilderness, providing a home for insects and bees and absorbing carbon. Over the lifespan of the bus station, carbon savings of 55 tonnes will be achieved, the same as planting more than 750 new trees.

Today, Telford & Wrekin Council opened the UK’s first bus station to generate its own electricity, in a bid to further reduce the carbon footprint of the borough and meet our ambitious target for net zero by 2030. The council has worked with suppliers Etesian Green and Journeo to create an ‘off-grid’ station where power is generated by multi-directional wind turbines and solar panels producing renewable, carbon-free energy. Energy available day and night will be harnessed, with each individual shelter generating approximately 820 kilowatthours a year, enough electricity to supply a house for three months. This energy will power the lighting, CCTV and live timetable information boards in the shelters.

It’s not just energy saving measures that have been incorporated into the station; the passenger information technology includes improved accessibility and security features such as voice and push button announcements.

Councillor Carolyn Healy (Labour), Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Green Spaces, Natural and Historic Environment & Cultural Services said: “The bus shelters are another step forward in our green journey to help tackle the climate emergency. “We are pioneering the installation of smart shelters powered by solar panels and micro wind turbine technology and were one of the first in the region to welcome bus stops with living roofs - clear examples of how we’re actively embedding renewable technology and bringing it to life – helping improve the borough’s climate, biodiversity and air quality.

Like & Follow - Social Media... INSTAGRAM: DEPublications12345 FACEBOOK: DEPublicationsLimited Twitter: @DEPublications

“The work continues well into the future as for every micro turbine installed, our contractor Etesian Green will plant 10 trees.” Technical director Ben Fagg at Etesian Green said:

“Etesian Green is a collaboration of companies formed to deliver next generation renewable solutions to the ‘out of home’ and outdoor network environments. Our vision is to accelerate the UK’s clean energy transition through the use of our innovative wind & solar technologies at a local level. “We envision bus shelters & stations, streets, car parks, coastlines, business parks, city centres, remote and residential areas all benefiting from its service. With the ability to be on and off grid we are looking to support EV charging schemes and in partnership with 21st also seeking to provide key statistical data on energy savings, air quality, wind speeds and temperatures. “We stand on the threshold of a new, greener, and more resilient era. Together we hold extraordinary power in our hands.” A further £250,000k is being invested over the next two years with more eco bus shelters being rolled out in support of the council’s bid to make the borough cleaner, greener and safer.

NHS Advice on Hay Fever_Full Page Bleed New 13/05/2022 17:59 Page 1

NHS issues hay fever guidance to help cut unnecessary prescription costs

Health News...

Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has issued a set of tips for tacking symptoms of hay fever, along with information on where to find help. It is not usually necessary to see a GP if you have hay fever symptoms, you can access treatment from your pharmacy without the need for a prescription. Local pharmacists are available for quick, free advice with no appointment necessary, and advice can also be obtained from the NHS website. During the last 12 months, NHS Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin prescribed 61,755 items to patients to treat mild hay fever – costing £237,167. All of these items would have been easily and cheaply available over the counter; for example a packet of 30 tablets can cost as little as £2 but would cost £9.35 on prescription.

Health

Common Condition Hay fever is a common condition also known as seasonal allergic rhinitis. It affects around 1 in 5 of us in the UK and mainly affects people between March and September. Hay fever is an allergic reaction to pollen; the fine powder produced by trees, flowers and weeds. Symptoms include sneezing, itchy eyes, a runny nose and headaches. Although hay fever is often harmless unfortunately there is no cure, so healthcare professionals suggest avoiding pollen alongside managing symptoms with over-the-counter treatments available from pharmacies and supermarkets. These include antihistamine tablets, nasal sprays and eye drops. Liz Walker, Chief Pharmacist at Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin CCG, offers this advice; “A lot of people still visit their GP for advice on hay fever. However, it’s far better to ask your local pharmacist if you’re not sure what treatment is suitable for the symptoms you have. Pharmacists provide free help and advice and you don’t need to book an appointment. We have a range of treatments in stock, from eye drops to tablets and these are often far cheaper than prescriptions.” Dr Deborah Shepherd, Medical Director for Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) says “We all have a responsibility to look after our own health and our NHS. By visiting a pharmacy to discuss hay fever symptoms you’ll be saving yourself time and money, freeing up GP appointments for people with urgent needs and helping the NHS save money on unnecessary prescription costs.” To find out our hints and tips on staying sneeze-free this summer, visit our website.

Boulton's Butcher_Full Page Bleed New 14/06/2022 14:21 Page 1

Boulton’s Master Butcher at work...

Artisan Butchery...

Master butcher Martin Boulton and his wife Nikola run Boulton’s Butchers in Little Dawley, and have now opened a new shop in the heart of Madeley’s Anstice Square - the first butchers shop in the town for over a decade.

Bringing this proper butchers shop back to Madeley is very special to Martin, as it was in the towns old Banks Butchers that he completed his apprenticeship over 30 years ago. So he and his wife are really excited to be back in Madeley, where it all began. Plus they have taken on two new apprentice butchers, which is really important, as it will help keep these traditional skills going for the future. Butcher’s shops have a charm all of their own, that old style shop where people pop in for a chat and a bit of

banter with friends, and to buy some great quality fresh meat - and Boulton’s meats and pies are very good indeed. The shop has an upmarket ‘Farm Shop’ style feel to it, selling the finest quality meats, steaks, burgers, bacon, joints, chops, BBQ packs and everything else you would expect from a traditional butcher. There is a deli counter for cheese, pork pies, quiches and pasties, and there is also vegetarian and vegan food available, and fish too - something for everyone!. From Sunday roasting joints, to sumptuous steaks, or quality sausages and burgers for a family barbeque - they have something for everyone at Boulton’s. You are guaranteed a warm welcome, quality products, all at affordable prices.

The Beach!

The Summer holidays always mean a day out at the beach with the family. I really look forward to packing up the boot of the car with snorkels, buckets & spades and a picnic basket full of goodies. Even though Telford was recently voted ‘Best Seaside Town’ in a recent poll carried out by TelfordLive - we like to make a day of it and go outof-town. But which beaches are the nearest to us? And, more importantly, which are the best to visit?

The nearest beaches are (as the crow flies) Prestatyn Beach in North Wales, and Wallasey Beach in The Wirral. Wallasey Beach is a sandy beach situated just west of Liverpool. There is plenty of car parking, and the beach is dog friendly which means your four-legged friend can join in the fun. Barmouth Beach is next, and it’s a firm favourite with Salopians, and has been for a long time, as it is only 65 miles away. Barmouth, or Abermaw or even Y Bermo as it is known in Welsh, is southern Snowdonia's most popular seaside resort with

breathtaking views of Cardigan Bay and y... the picturesque harbour. The town's ead r beach, Abermaw, is west facing with e a mixture of sand and some fine shingle and is ideal for bathing and watersports. It can get very busy in the town, a land train runs along the promenade and there are traditional donkey rides, swing boats and amusement arcades. There is good disabled access to the beach. There is also a full range of shops, cafes and pubs are within a short distance. My favourite though is the fresh prawns and crab claws from the Lobster Pot on The Quay (a must on every visit) and Fish & Chips from the local chippy. My favourite beach is Morfa Bychan, commonly known as Black Rock Sands. It’s a sandy beach, with rocky areas - although the rocks aren’t actually black. The beach stretches for about 2 miles and is backed by a dune system which has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. There are plenty of rockpools to explore here as well as some interesting caves. A river mouth lies at the south-eastern end of the beach, and the village of Morfa Bychan is a few hundred metres away. When the tide is out you can walk around the rocks to Criccieth Beach - which is a pebble beach. The beach has lovely views of the mountains and country-side of Snowdonia National Park. A slipway provides vehicular access to the sands and most visitors park on the beach, making it a popular picnic destination and providing easy access for those with mobility problems. There are designated bathing and boat launching areas. Dogs are banned from the central section of the beach, but are allowed on the eastern and western sections. There are a number of holiday parks in the area surrounding the beach. In the village of Morfa Bychan there are shops, places to eat and a golf club. There are more facilities in the town of Porthmadog, about 2 miles from the beach.

feature it in any future beach articles! Tell us if it is sandy or stony. Is it beach safe for kids and suitable for famililies with small children? Are there lifeguards on duty? Did it have accessible clean toilets or baby changing facilities? What about parking? Is it was dog friendly? Email: Eileen@deltaecho.co.uk

In the meantime, have a fabulous summer with some fun in the sun, but don't forget your bucket and spade!

From Pastime

to Full Time,

we are a Nation Turning Hobbies Into Hustles UK’s largest craft supplier LoveCrafts reveals how COVID-19 has accelerated the shift to DIY crafters Amid a turbulent jobs market, repeated lockdowns and restrictions, the pandemic presented a unique opportunity for Brits to dedicate time to passion projects. From updating interiors and gardening, to crafting, textiles and sewing, savvy hobbyists soon turned their pandemic pastimes to monetised hustles, with over 1 million businesses started during 2020 and 2021. Recognising the societal shift in the private sector with Brits transforming their living rooms into workshops, a first-of-its-kind study by LoveCrafts.com - the UK's leading craft supplier - has unveiled that 1 million Brits said the pandemic led them to turn their passion for part-time crafting into a full-time career. Further to this, 4.1 million now craft items to sell with a further 5 million being encouraged by friends and family to sell their homemade makes. As DIY retail boomed, with Brits turning hobbies into hustles, metrics from the online marketplace Depop reported a 300% increase in sales as the growth of independently made items became ubiquitous, and handmade grew up to 30% on the platform. Now, as the art in artisan is commercially rewarding, LoveCrafts explores a nation that have turned their crafting passion to profit, with 3.5 million now monetising homemade crafts. Case Studies: Championing indie designers and micro-businesses, LoveCrafts has profiled an array of Britain's most prolific crafting entrepreneurs https://www.lovecrafts.com/en-gb/c/article/indiejune-2021

Paula of @thecraftylass quit her 9-5 to follow her crafty dreams: "When I quit my job people did say to me you're a bit stupid, why have you quit a well paid 95 job to follow what is just your passion? Crafts are not going to make you any money. I had a few people say that, and I think if anything it spurred me on to want to prove them wrong, there is a way." The national research by LoveCrafts has revealed that hobbyists have turned their pastime into a profitable business on an unprecedented scale, unveiling 4.1 million Brits now craft items as a pastime, while 5 million have been encouraged by friends and family to sell their homemade wares and 1.7 million make a living from selling their crafts. Further to this, the data unveils the 1 million Brits who turned to DIY during the pandemic, and now sell crafts as their main job. Edward Griffith, CEO and Founder, LoveCrafts comments: "Coming through such a difficult couple of years, we've seen a rise in hobbyists monetising their crafts and it's been dubbed it "the year of the hobby hustle". We have thousands of independent knitting, crochet and stitching designers who have uploaded hundreds of thousands of patterns to LoveCrafts, and in 2021, there were millions of downloads for indie patterns. We work with, and promote "indies" at every opportunity and offer help and support with marketing, including yarn and thread support, and the chance to collaborate with our marketing and design

teams. It's so gratifying to see how much the value of handmade crafts has increased, given the endless hours of creativity and skill that goes into them, and it's great to see that handmade items are so sought after." About LoveCrafts: LoveCrafts.com is the online home for makers. A place to find inspiration, learn new techniques, shop craft supplies, and connect with likeminded people around the world. Yarn, free patterns, needles, threads, fabrics, hooks, craft books and kits can all be found via the site. Whether someone’s a knitter, sewist, quilter or little-bit-of-everything crafter, they can discover the joy of making at LoveCrafts.com.

Key statistics:

• 13% of Brits (4.1 million) have crafted items to then sell

• 18% of Brits (5 million) have been encouraged by friends and family to sell their homemade wares • 6% of Brits (1.7 million) make a living from selling their crafts • 5% of Brits (1 million) said the pandemic led them to change their career and now sell crafts as their main job • 13% of Brits (3.5 million) discovered that they are so good at their craft that they can now monetise it

style guide THE

Summer is here, and with it comes holiday season. You may be jetting off abroad for the first time in ages, or heading to the beach in one of the UK’s glorious costal holiday spots, but wherever you are going you will need a fabulous swimsuit or bikini to rock whilst you’re there! I do love to swim, normally only when it’s warm though. The thought of pulling on my cossy normally fills me with dread, but after the last few years, and the much-welcomed change in attitudes towards ‘plus-sized’ models in advertising campaigns - I simply aren’t bothered anymore. It’s just great to get away and enjoy some fun in the sun. Finding the perfect swimsuit or bikini can be a bit of a task, but there are lots of options around now to choose from, and most cater for any shape or size too, which is great news for us all. Primark has a really wide variety of swimwear on offer, from one-piece wonders to mix and match bikini items. From extra small to extra large - and everything in between. I love the bold prints and bright colours, and the endless styles available, plus the fact that many of the items are now made using recycled polyester or plastic, which is better for sustainability. They are also really reasonably priced, which is even more important with the cost of living spiralling. So have fun, enjoy the sea, sand and sun and look great while you do. Here are a few of my top picks for this summer, but you can check out the full range either in store or on the website: www.primark.com/en-gb

STAY HOME...

Coastal Living...

For me Summer means trips to the seaside in Wales and down south. With sea, sand and hopefully a little sun, it is the perfect place to relax and unwind. But I really miss the coast when it’s time to return home. Coastal living is a popular home trend, that allows us to have a coastal vibe - all year round! With coastal themes for every room in your home, you can create a relaxed seaside look, which you can enjoy every day...

Create Your Own Beach House...

Wood-clad walls, white-washed to create a beach house vibe is the perfect base for the coastal living trend. Add easy, breezy materials like rattan and grasscloth and accessorise with oceanic elements like seashells, rope and wicker - and even seaweed. It is impossible to not perk up the minute you enter a bright beachy home. Let these rooms with coastal style lift all your worries away.

Sail Away With Coastal Fabrics

Inspired by staycations and the revival of the great British seaside, Coastal Retreat offers a sophisticated take on nautical interiors. The PT Eco collection embraces sailing boats, underwater scenes and handprinted shells, alongside watercolour spots, painterly Jacobeans and a coordinating diamond geometric. Presented in a palette of sea-blue, sunshine yellow and bright coral, the sustainably sourced fabrics are also available in a wipe-clean matt or glossy finish.

Wolverhampton Grammar School...

Friendly, inclusive and purposeful

“Friendly, inclusive and purposeful” are the words Alex Frazer, the 34th Head of Wolverhampton Grammar School, used recently to describe his school.

Open to all!

Wolverhampton Grammar School or WGS as it is more affectionately known, is situated to the west of Wolverhampton on a 25-acre campus. The historic façade might at first seem a little imposing but as you enter through the gates, you are soon greeted by the real heart of the school – the staff and students. They are sure to give you a warm welcome and they really make WGS the vibrant, forward-thinking school that it has become some 500+ years since its foundation.

Pupils regularly travel in from the surrounding counties and a dedicated school bus service offers convenient transport options for families in the wider West Midlands, Staffordshire and Shropshire areas.

Are looking for professional central heating Installers? Look no further...

Enflame Heating & Plumbing

We are also proud to offer a range of gas and plumbing services throughout Telford, Newport, Shrewsbury, and Shifnal.

We are a small local company based in Shropshire and have over 20 years of experience in the gas and plumbing industry and we boast well over 2000 loyal customers on our books. We are trained and fully qualified to offer services such as boiler installations, boiler servicing, boiler repairs, full central heating installations or unvented systems. Customer satisfaction is very important to us, which is why we ensure to offer an excellent and professional service, from start to finish. You’ll be glad to know that we are Gas Safe registered and BAXI Approved. This means that we are fully qualified to carry out any gas work and that we are trained to install, repair and service any BAXI boilers along with the other popular boiler makes such as Worcester Bosch and Vailiant. We also have a great product where we offer a range of service plans to look after old and new customers. We decided to offer these maintenance plans to give our customers peace of mind that their boiler was covered should any problem arise and they had someone local that they could speak to almost straight away without being on left on hold waiting to speak to someone, Offering other advantages with discounts on parts and labour so it really pays for itself with making sure their heating system was safe for a small monthly payment. We are the moment also putting together a package for landlords as we know this can be make it a stress free environment if for them if we communicate with the tenant on their behalf. Our focus at the moment is to make sure our customers as using their heating systems efficiently

Rosli King as possible, with energy prices sky rocketing In price with an expected increase again in Autumn we have found we helped a large number of people save on their gas, I actually did a short video on our page Facebook :www.facebook.com/enflame.heating explaining how we can help reduce costs of up to 8-10% annually. Boiler servicing is essential annually to avoid the pitfalls of boiler efficiently and avoiding high cost repairs. Boiler replacements is also a big part of our company with record company installs during this previous year. Although we try to keep the boilers going it can be end up being beyond economic repair which can be a large outlay but can save you money long term. We have had customers let us know how pleased they were with when they got their gas bill making some incredible savings with new boiler. The other big positive is that upgrading your heating system which has warranty automatically adds value to your property for example upgrading the heating when it costs £3000 can typically up the value of your property by an extra £9000 so it pays for itself and actually makes you money as opposed to brand new kitchen at a cost of say £15000 would not add value at all. We estimate it takes 2 days to complete an upgrade from a conventional system to a combination boiler. Our number one company ethic is to look after customers so they feel comfortable with us and feel happy that they are being looked after, its the main reason why so many customers have stayed with us. Call Us Today - To find out more information about our heating and plumbing services, simply call us on 07970973675 and we’ll be happy to help.

‘Inflammunity’

The New Threat To Our Flagging Immune Systems

GP Dr Nisa Aslam adds. “One of the key ways we can safeguard our immune response is by reducing inflammation across the body.”

When asked what they believed chronic inflammation can lead to, just under a quarter (23%) of survey respondents said it can jeopardise immunity, a quarter (25%) said it affects the body’s ability to fight infection, over a third (35%) said it can cause fatigue, and three in 10 (31%) said it can lead to poor metabolic health.

Let Mediterranean Food Be Thy Medicine

New report reveals the essential foods – including 100% fruit juice – that can keep inflammation in check and protect long-term immune health. Living in the shadow of Covid-19 for the past few years has brought our immune systems into sharper focus than ever. With inflammation, a key driver of sluggish immune health, a new report - - Inflammunity: How Hidden Inflammation Is Harming Our Immune Response commissioned on behalf of the Fruit Juice Science Centre, delves into the science surrounding the latest hot health topic, dubbed ‘inflammunity’. Plus, a real-world survey featured in the report reveals that just a quarter of Brits (25%) believe their immune system is very healthy.

Inflammation – The Hidden Immunity Disruptor

Report author and dietitian at the Fruit Juice Science Centre, Dr Carrie Ruxton, says: “Inflammation can seriously limit our immune response; a problem we’ve dubbed ‘inflammunity’. The negative effects of chronic inflammation in our bodies explain why people who are overweight or have underlying health conditions have tended to fare worse with Covid-19 symptoms.”

54 Health

Over half (56%) of those questioned in the Fruit Juice Science Centre survey correctly identified that certain foods or drinks can stimulate inflammation in the body, while almost one in six (59%) believed healthier foods and drinks can calm down inflammation. Professor of Nutritional Immunology, Philip Calder, says: “The diet that seems to have the most support for lowering inflammation is the Mediterranean diet, which places a huge emphasis on fruits, vegetables, nuts, olive oil, oily fish, and just a little meat.”

“Evidence suggests that the high flavonoid content of a Mediterranean diet – which includes vitamin C-rich citrus fruits – plays a big part in the ability of this dietary pattern to lower inflammation,” explains Dr Ruxton, adding that, “Flavonoids are a class of polyphenols – powerful plant compounds – that are linked with good health across many different studies.”

Page 54 & 55 - Summer Health_Double Page Editorial 13/05/2022 17:22 Page 2

A Glassful Of Immune Supporting Goodness

It turns out there’s a simple, and delicious, step we can take to help tackle inflammunity – enjoying a daily glass of orange juice. GP Dr Gill Jenkins says, “It’s the key nutrients and bioactives in orange juice that make it such a brilliant tool for lowering, or even avoiding, chronic inflammation, and in turn help our immune system to do its job.” She continues, “Adding a 150ml glass of pure orange juice to your daily diet can protect your immune system, according to recent research. Plus, one glass of orange juice contributes to the NHS recommendation of five daily servings of fruits and vegetables.[1]”

Recipe For Immune Success

So, what exactly is it about orange juice that makes it so good at fighting inflammation? Amongst fruit juice drinkers in the new poll, the main reason given for their daily glass was to get their vitamins. Demonstrating that Brits have some nutrition knowledge when it comes to this healthy way to hydrate, nearly half (47%) of survey respondents said they drink orange juice for its vitamin C content, which is of course one of the main nutrient components in pure orange juice.

Professor Philip Calder explains: “Vitamin C affects inflammation by regulating cytokine production, and we know that too many cytokines can wreak havoc on inflammation status. Vitamin C also helps to increase levels of antibodies by supporting the growth of T- and B-lymphocytes, which are types of white blood cells that drive and direct our immunity response. Indeed, according to one study in the to a recent study in the journal of the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism, vitamin C has a ‘potential protective and therapeutic role’ in helping to tackle Covid-19[2]”.

But there’s even more health-promoting goodness in a simple glass of orange juice that many Brits aren’t aware of. Nearly half of respondents had never heard of carotenoids (43%) or bioactive plant compounds (42%) such as hesperidin, narirutin, and naringin – all found naturally in orange juice. Indeed, 45% said they’d never heard of polyphenols. Plus, 50% had no idea how polyphenols may have a positive effect on the body and only 11% thought that they could help with coronavirus.

Dr Carrie Ruxton’s 5 tips for fighting inflammunity...

1. Drink a daily glass of 100% fruit juice, for example a glass of pure orange juice. You can even use it to create overnight oats for a quick breakfast.

2. Don’t just aim for 5-a-day but boost this to 8-a-day and include all the colours of the rainbow to maximise the range of anti-inflammatory plant polyphenols, like hesperidin, narirutin, anthocyanins and kaempferol. Both juices and whole fruits and vegetables, as well as frozen, tinned, and dried options can contribute to your eight daily portions. 3. Keep stress to a minimum by taking time out from work, family, and screens to relax, and grab some thinking space. Studies show that bouts of stress release the inflammatory marker, cortisol, which can even be detected within minutes in saliva after a stressful experience.

4. Avoid pro-inflammatory habits like smoking, drinking excess alcohol and diets high in saturated fats and ultraprocessed carbs. Choosing natural foods, such as fruits, vegetables, fish, lean meats, and wholegrains is a great start.

5. Stick to a healthy body weight, particularly weight around the middle, by taking regular exercise and choosing a balanced diet and calorie intake. Excess body fat is proinflammatory and seriously increases the risk of inflammunity, affecting your ability to fight off infections. https://fruitjuicesciencecentre.eu/en

Glowing Summer Skin_Full Page Bleed New 13/05/2022 15:03 Page 1

Expert Tips for Glowing

Summer Skin

Expert reveals the secret for glowing skin this summer...

Omega-7 for Dry Skin For very dry skin I love sources of omega-7. It helps to redistribute the moisture in our bodies by nourishing and moisturising us from within. This helps to keep our skin looking and feeling plump and sleek. It can help to reduce redness, irritation, and inflammation which are all symptoms associated with dry skin. Dry skin is also more prone to infections, which omega7 can help to minimise. Omega-7 also helps to protect our mucous membranes which line areas like our mouth, nose, and eyes.

Comfrey for Mature Skin I love the herbal ingredient Comfrey for aging skin. Comfrey is super moisturising which means it can help to ease the appearance of fine lines, smoothing, strengthening, and invigorating your skin with new life as a result of its array of naturally occurring antioxidants and tannins; helping to brighten your natural complexion. Neem for Sensitive Skin The herbal ingredient Neem is great for calming sensitive or even eczema-prone

skin. The naturally occurring, anti-inflammatory properties of Neem seem to make it wonderful at relieving stubborn discomfort or itchiness often associated with dry, sensitive skin. If skin is prone to angrier infections, echinacea within creams can help as a result of this herb’s antimicrobial properties, similar to coconut oil which is my everyday go-to.

Hyaluronic Acid for Oily Skin Interestingly, even if we suffer from oily skin, this can actually be a sign of underlying dryness as your body is trying hard to overcompensate. One other ingredient that can work well for issues with dryness and even feeling oily, is hyaluronic acid. This ingredient helps to keep the skin hydrated and retains water where it’s needed most. Just watch out for how hyaluronic acid is produced. In some cases, it can come from animal origin which I’d say for people to avoid. Look out for herbal and non-GMO sources instead, such as with some of A.Vogel’s products. Credit: Emma Thornton

Finding The Right Weights For You And Your Workout

fitness goals...

There are many benefits to incorporating resistancebased exercises and weightlifting into your workout.

Whether you want to build strength, shift stubborn body fat, or define your muscles, lifting weights is great for improving your overall fitness and wellbeing. Nevertheless, lifting weights can be quite daunting, especially for those who are new to using weights or working out altogether. It can also prove difficult determining how heavy a weight you should opt for, and how this differs depending on what type of exercise you’re doing. To help those who are interested in taking up weight training, Dean Zweck, Product Development Manager at Total Fitness, has shared his top tips for finding the right weights for you.

Establish your Fitness Goals First and foremost, you need to establish what goal you are looking to achieve by lifting weights - this will help you to decide how many repetitions of each exercise you should aim to complete. Consider whether you are aiming to build strength and muscle or hoping to improve your endurance. If it is your muscle and strength that you want to build up, then opt for a low to medium number of reps per exercise, such as 8-14. For endurance training, a higher number of reps will work better, so aim for 16-20. Regardless of how many reps you are completing, it is crucial that your weight challenges you so that the last few reps of your set are difficult to complete. Nevertheless, the weight shouldn’t be too heavy for you that it compromises your form, as this is when the risk of injury is more likely.

Understand the Exercise There isn’t a one-size fits all approach when it comes to weightlifting, and you will find that the range of weights you can lift varies quite significantly from one exercise to another. Before picking up your weights, consider what type of exercise you are doing and what muscles you are targeting. Compound exercises, such as squats or chest presses, target more than one muscle group at a time. This means you can often use a heavier weight than you could whilst completing an exercise that specifically targets one area in isolation, such as a bicep curl. It’s no surprise that larger muscle groups, such as your hamstring, glutes, and chest, can withstand higher levels of resistance, so adapt your weight in accordance with this: for example, don’t use the same weight for a shoulder press as you would a deadlift.

Trial and Error With a consideration of which muscles you are targeting and how many reps you are aiming to complete in mind, it’s time to start picking up your dumbbells, kettlebells or loading up your barbell. Trial and error is key when it comes to finding the right weight for your workout, especially when you are new to lifting weights. A general rule of thumb is to start reasonably light, such as 2kg – 5kg for upper body workouts and 8kg -15kg for lower body workouts. Try a couple of reps using a weight you think is appropriate for you – if you have no prior experience using weights, then start at the lower end of the range. See how completing the reps feels and how comfortable you are with the weight and movement. If you think completing your set would be relatively easy with your current weight, then add on additional weight gradually. If you are struggling to complete the first few reps you try, then opt for a lighter load. Ultimately, you are aiming to use a weight that will fatigue your muscle fully by the end of your set, but not from the outset. Keep Pushing Yourself The right weight for you now may not be the right weight for you in a few weeks, or even in a few days. When you train consistently, you will notice that you are able to increase your weight quite significantly, especially at the beginning of your fitness and weightlifting journey. Once you reach the point when the last few reps of your workout are feeling comfortable, it’s time to switch to a heavier weight. A good habit to get into is to keep a journal and write down the reps you have done and weights you are using for each exercise, noting down how your body is responding the workout. If you can complete all your reps and feel ok in the next couple of days it’s a signal to shift that weight up. Whilst everyone has off-days at the gym, hopefully your journal will highlight when the workout is no longer challenging your strength or endurance. There is no set time frame for when you need to shift to a heavier weight – the adaptation process for each person is completely different. It’s important to listen to your body and not over-exert yourself unnecessarily.

So there you have it, the most important things you should consider when deciding what weight range is right for you. Find out more about Total Fitness on their website.

The Basics

Model: Genesis G70 SB Price: £41,430 Engine: 1.6 Petrol Hybrid Pictures: Hyundai

Let me introduce you to Genesis: the new premium brand owned by Hyundai that's marketed in a completely new and revolutionary way. No dealers. Just direct contact with Genesis. And you get your very own Genesis Personal Assistant to look after your Genesis experience that includes 5 years servicing and courtesy car plus 5 years warranty. This is a totally different kind of owner/manufacturer relationship. And the products? They are quite simply 'top notch, and have proved to be just that in other markets where the brand is well established. Even the delivery of the test car was so much more professionally handled than with rivals. Genesis is certainly making a dramatic impact for the better. Take the £41,430 Genesis G70 Shooting Brake. (£46,530 as tested here with the innovation pack and the comfort pack). It's a stylish and refined performer that comes highly equipped with all the necessary tech that we simply can't do without today. The list is long and it all comes as standard: which, frankly my friend, is exactly what you'd expect from a Genesis, to wit a high end automobile designed for the discerning customer. My chief concern here is to concentrate on the G70 Shooting Brake from the perspective of someone who thinks that cars are made to be driven and passengers made to be cosseted. TRADITIONAL VALUES in other words. Of course, it doesn't hurt that the shooting brake styling is designed to accommodate all the luggage you need plus golf clubs and a brace of Purdeys; with space aplenty for a brace of pheasants too.{ A shooting brake see.). The G70 is not just a common or garden estate car. But to revert to the marque in general. For the uninitiated, Genesis ownership is a bit like joining an exclusive club. Your Genesis Personal Assistant is on hand to guide you and make light work of everything - so you don't need to worry. Personal individual service is what you get. Compared with other prestigious market rivals, it all costs less than you might think .And as we know only too well today, paying through the nose doesn't necessarily guarantee service with a smile. With Genesis you are confident that the customer is king. (Or as my mate Billy says 'Would you Adam and Eve it?'). As the old adage has it: 'Treat the customer well and the well will not run dry.'

Genesis G70 SB Regular readers will know that I have a penchant for relating anecdotes connected with friends and neighbours who dwell in social distant clusters on the perimeter of the grounds of my Chateau Despaire. They are an odd bunch and I consider myself to be the only sane person for miles around. Be that as it may, one evening last week the gatehouse bell chimed - and staff, being absent on permanent leave - I shuffled out into the darkness wearing my smoking jacket and waterproof slippers. (Bought as a gift for the man who has everything). 'Sorry to disturb you mate'. I recognised the voice even though in the gloom all I could see was a greyish white nebulosity floating above the ground. Experience informed me that this ghostly ectoplasm emanated not from a vaping enthusiast, but was, in fact, the beard attached to the bucolic countenance of my neighbour Joshua a semi-retired folk singer lately settled in my neighbourhood. 'Whatever is the matter Joshua? I asked.

'My plectrum' he replied enigmatically. 'It's a special platinum one that was presented to me by The Society For The Preservation Of Our Melodic Heritage.' 'And what about it?' 'I dropped it in the road and can't see it in the dark. I wonder if you would shine your car headlights so I might find it'. I was about to say something as Joshua read my mind. 'I can't use my car. The battery is flat. And that's not all. I'm due to perform at The Feathered Friend at 9.0pm. How on earth will I get there?' 'Fear not my hearty! I have a Genesis G70 Shooting Brake. You may have shot yourself in the foot, so to speak, but this motor car has the capacity to shoot to the rescue. So saying I went indoors, dressed for an outing and drove the Genesis to where Joshua was waiting patiently. I called out to him through the open window 'Let there be light!'

A blade of pure luminosity turned the dark street into a Super Trooper blaze of brilliance. Joshua stood hypnotised. Something glinted on the road. Nothing glints I discovered, like a platinum plectrum. Fast forward an hour and we were well on the road. The sat nav computer told us we were cutting it fine but no car was better suited to the purpose as we dashed to our destination in the service of culture. Joshua's precious Martin guitar was accommodated with ease while the sumptuous leather upholstery cosseted us like kings. The torquey might of the 197bhp 2.2 diesel engine driving through the 8 speed automatic transmission (that will actually take you to 140mph if you have access to a private runway), propelled us onwards with an accompanying bassoon-like sonority. I relished the rear-wheel-drive element of driver engagement as we negotiated twisty roads. Joshua warmly expressed gratitude for being allowed to experience the sort of quality motoring usually denied devotees of folk music. He was particularly fascinated by the

3D instruments that magically present themselves within the driver's line of vision. The V70 SB delivered us in good time to The Feathered Friend. Joshua was hoping that when the hat was passed round after the performance that there would be enough to pay for fuel. But that didn't matter, as economy is sometimes up to 50mpg. I did have to sit it out for the duration of his performance but what sustained me was the thought of taking the wheel again for the trip home. Every journey in a Genesis V70 SB serves as a reminder of the basic pleasures of motoring. These are liberally enhanced with the latest developments on the road towards hitherto undreamed of levels of sophistication. Journeys may end but thanks to Genesis, progress just keeps on going.

Fuelling EVs

Almost £600

Cheaper than petrol alternatives

Energy costs have pushed up costs for a petrol car by 20% in a year

Mark Sait, CEO and founder of sustainability experts, SaveMoneyCutCarbon (SMCC), discusses how the transition towards EV can help Brits slash thousands off transport costs. New Research from Compare the Market has revealed that electric vehicles (EVs) are now £579 cheaper on average to run than a petrol car, when taking into account the cost of insurance, fuel, and road tax. This comes as the UK continues to grapple with an unprecedented resource shortage – bumping up diesel prices by 40% and petrol prices by a third since this time last year. Electric cars have seen a substantial growth in popularity – with research from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders indicating that EVs now make up around one in three new car sales. The cost of living crisis is likely to drive this number up, as employees are set to face the biggest squeeze, with the rise of petrol and public transport costs presenting a

challenge across the UK. Mark Sait, CEO and founder of sustainability experts, SaveMoneyCutCarbon (SMCC), explains that the price hike will likely generate greater demand, and in turn generate a more affordable, accessible and sustainable way in travelling around. With the government's recent announcement that the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS), those living in properties such as bungalows, detached, semi-detached or terraced houses looking to qualify for a £350 subsidy will need to submit their claim before April 30th. In line with this, SMCC offers OZEV approved, grant fundable, high-quality and long-lasting EV charging cables to assist with reducing oil usage. You can find these on their online shop-front.
