Who is Susana Padilla-Burns and what is the difference between a Certified Master Hypnotist and a Certified Hypnotherapist? by Susana Padilla-Burns- on September 2017
So many moments in life become intricate details of the kaleidoscopic mosaic that is life. One of my greatest defining moments in life was when I made the decision to leave a comfortable job near my home and venture off to become an Innkeeper for a small farm on the shore in Northern California. I couldn't have known at the time that That experience would change my life and open doors to a new way of living. As an Innkeeper I had the opportunity to travel to various idyllic places on the Pacific coast, and during those times - I'd work to create a standard for the space because I believed the guests were coming in to experience a special moment in their lives. The world really is a stage and I was responsible for maintaining the appearance and consistency of this particular set. The “Vacation Set” for travelers. For ten years I traveled and met people all around. I sat in patios and cafes in foreign villages and spoke with locals and travelers alike. I read, I wrote, attended symphonic performances, and I passionately studied all topics of interest, but eventually my time to leave the industry came. Interestingly enough, it came to me in the form of a fall at work - eight months after having given birth and one month into the job. When I found out my fall was going to keep me from ever returning to my career, I had to reinvent myself. I felt it was time to follow my passion. I felt like I had been given a chance to do what my heart said to do. In all the years of working in hotels and inns I discovered people really want a sanctuary. There is not enough silence in our world anymore. Even if we want to get away we have to put headphones on - it's never just nothing anymore. I wanted to bring the relaxation and rejuvenation that vacations bring, that nature provides to people who couldn't get away. In 2011 I had the idea for meditation spaces to be designed under my brand, Everybuddha. I wanted to design spaces for inner peace and bring silence to people no matter where they were. Combining my interests and passions, I realized Interior Design would be the best way to make my visions a reality. I studied at the Interior Design Institute in Newport Beach, CA. While there I was learning how to interpret a whole other way of creating space and expressing vision through dimensions on a plane. Drafting,
perspective, sketching … light design! All these classes spoke to me, but in different ways. I wanted to focus on the light within the person and the dimensions of their mind.
The contents of the spaces within. It was interior design that I was being called to, but not in a literal sense. It was in the realm of the True Interior. The individual's inner mind space. How do we create it? How can we go within and create a space for positive suggestions to come in and replace the negative thought patterns that have defined results for so long?
Create an internal space for change to come in and remain. That was how Hypnotherapy became the next natural step for me. It wasn't long before I registered for classes at HMI, the Hypnosis Motivation Institute in Tarzana, Ca. I took to it immediately as it was yet another interpretation of space and this was how I was going to help people find their silence and space within. While there I absorbed all the information I could get and took over 170 hours of specialties above the 720 required to graduate. I would've graduated in ten months rather than the year timeframe, but I was having such a great time that I stretched out the last two months just to spend time at the campus. The support from staff and colleagues was fantastic and I began to see clients with confidence as soon as the residency began, six months into the program. One of the specialties that helped me the most was the Therapeutic Imagery Master training I received. That course was designed to speak to the specific receptiveness of each individual's subconscious. Having this specific knowledge and ability is what helps the clients gain the most benefit during our sessions. With Therapeutic Imagery, clients create personal spaces within that bring relief, calmness, comfort. It is a very personal and empowering experience.
We design spaces within and create from there. A Certified Hypnotherapist is someone who has completed the required hours to be a Master Hypnotist and done an additional 200 hours of supervised clinical experience, according to the Hypnotherapist Union. This comes to roughly 720 hours of education and supervised practice. A Consulting Hypnotist is someone who is Certified through the National Guild of Hypnotists. To become a CH, one must complete 100 hours of training and continue to receive CEUs in related topics. Both the Hypnotherapists Union and the National Guild of Hypnotists maintain a code of ethics, hold their Hypnotists to a standard of integrity and offer opportunities for further training. Some states do not allow the title of Hypnotherapist and prefer for practicing Hypnotists to be called Consulting Hypnotists.
So would you know which Hypnotherapist or Consulting Hypnotist to select? Clients need to feel comfortable and understood in order to relax and trust their Hypnotist. During a Hypnosis session with me, the client is completely aware of their surroundings and are able to open their eyes, move, and speak. People will experience a great sense of calm and relaxation in the body while their minds become more focused, and attuned to what they are searching for. Often clients will come in and believe they cannot visualize or be hypnotized, but soon discover otherwise. In the first session, we set aside about 90 minutes to go over any questions about hypnosis and go over the reason for the sessions. The first induction is the most important one because we create the foundation to build upon for future sessions, and it leaves a space of mental clearing the client can access again should they wish to between sessions or even after therapy is complete. Preparing for a session is also a key for ensuring the best possible outcome. As clients come to learn in session with me, diet will play a significant role in how we sleep to how we live; so naturally, how we go into Hypnosis will also be affected by diet. A diet high in sugars and carbs can make the body take a long time to respond as we work to establish the Mind Body Connection.
During the session the opportunity for the client to speak may arise and they have the choice to speak or remain silent about the matter, either way, it will not hinder results. I provide clients with recordings to listen to between visits. This helps to reinforce the desired outcomes and help with other areas of concern should it be of benefit.
Specialties and Certifications Many times while attending classes at the Hypnosis Motivation Institute, professors would tell us that the specialties would choose us and this was in part because of the life experiences we had overcome and could now speak of with experience and a perspective of understanding. With that understanding I took on courses that covered not only some of the things I had experienced firsthand, but also through friends and family members. I lived with a parent who had PTSD and while learning about it, I realized that I too had experienced it when my son died in 2000.
