Therapeutic Imagery 101 An overview on Therapeutic Imagery and how it can help.

by Susana Padilla on July 2016 Imagery has most certainly been around since the first cave drawings and paintings were used to tell a story, to remember, to guide. The use of imagery and hypnosis has been used throughout time by various cultures. One of the first recorded uses of these modalities comes from the times of the Great Pharaohs of Egypt and the Temple of Imhotep. Over 5,000 years ago, in the late 3rd century BCE, this was a notable healing center where ailing individuals would visit the temple to experience Temple Sleep and find a remedy and or vision from the gods.

Since then, hypnosis and imagery have taken on many different names and purposes, but it has been formalized since the 1960’s when studies and research were able to be conducted in order to show how healing had been improved by using Therapeutic Imagery . Side effects and conditions such as: nausea , anxiety , fatigue and pain were reduced . Clients and patients were able to use Therapeutic Imagery to learn how to cope with life, uncertainty, diagnoses and changes. It has since expanded to help with many other challenges in life and to reach goals that may seem impossible. Some benefits of Hypnosis and Therapeutic Imagery are a improved self-confidence, reduction of fears, weight management, sales improvement, and many more self-improvement issues.

Therapeutic Imagery incorporates all the senses in a silent and fragrance-free environment. While it may be challenging to find a place of silence in some cities and towns, sounds can sometimes be used to deepen relaxation. At times, clients may believe they are not “seeing” anything because they only see colors or shapes, but that is still very much “seeing”. Because the subconscious mind communicates in symbols and images, there can be many messages within those visions. There are also some clients who experience a scent that is obviously not in the room, as it may come from a memory. A Master Facilitator would be able to guide a client through those sensory experiences and find what is just beneath the surface.
