U.S. adds 175K jobs in May Unemployment rate rises to 7.6% BY PAUL WISEMAN Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. economy added 175,000 jobs in May— a steady pace that shows strength in the face of tax increases and government spending cuts if not enough to reduce still-high unemployment. The unemployment rate
rose to 7.6 percent from 7.5 percent in April, the Labor Department said Friday. The rate rose because more people began looking for work, a healthy sign, but only about three-quarters found jobs. Analysts said the lessthan-robust job growth would likely lead the Federal Reserve to maintain the pace of its monthly bond purchases
for a few more months. The bond purchases have been intended to ease long-term borrowing costs and lift stock prices. Investors appeared pleased by the evidence that job growth remains steady. The Dow Jones industrial average was up about 172 points in late-afternoon trading. Friday’s job figures pro-
vided further evidence of the U.S. economy’s resilience. The housing market is strengthening, auto sales are up and consumer confidence has reached a five-year peak. Stock prices are near record highs, and the budget deficit has shrunk. The U.S. economy’s relative strength contrasts with EuSee JOBS/Page 5

TODAY’S THOUGHT “I do believe one ought to face facts. If you don’t they get behind you and may become terrors, nightmares, giants, horrors. As long as one faces them one is top dog.” — Katherine Mansfield, New Zealander author (18881923). For more on today in history, turn to Page 5.

JOHNATHON FREDDERICKSON of the Botkins Community Club prepares the food in anticipation of a hungry crowd Friday night at the Botkins Carousel.
Festival breakfast to benefit family that lost home to fire BY KATHY LEESE BOTKINS — The Botkins Carousel festival is not only a place where people are going this weekend to have fun, but it is a place where friends, family and strangers are coming together to help a Fryburg family that lost everything in a fire earlier this week.
Carousel organizers and the village of Botkins have joined forces to help Chad and Nancy Steinke and their children as they deal with the devastating loss of their home Sunday night. The fire loss has not yet been determined, but it is estimated at more than $200,000. The family reportedly escaped with only
the clothes on their backs. They include the Steinke’s children, CJ, Levi and Isaac, and their twin foster children. Audrey Gutman, one of the Carousel organizers, said festival officials want to help the Steinkes deal with their loss and are inviting the public to help. See FIRE/Page 19
Man faces 329 charges in missing women case BY ANN SANNER Associated Press COLUMBUS (AP) — A man accused of holding three women captive in his rundown home in Cleveland for a decade and fathering a child with one of them has been indicted on 329 charges including murder, kidnapping and rape, prosecutors said. A Cuyahoga County grand jury returned the indictment Friday against Ariel Castro, a former school bus driver fired last fall. Castro, 52, is accused of kidnapping Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle
Knight and holding them captive along with a 6-year-old girl he fathered with Berry. The grand jury charged Castro with two counts of aggravated murder related to one act, saying he purposely caused the unlawful termination of one of the women’s pregnancies. Castro also was indicted on 139 counts of rape, 177 counts of kidnapping, seven counts of gross sexual imposition, three counts of felonious assault and one count of possession of criminal tools. Castro’s attorneys have said he would plead not guilty to any indictment. Castro,
during his brief arraignment last month, tried to hide his face, tucking his chin inside his shirt collar, and did not speak. Castro is being held on $8 million bail. He has been taken off suicide prevention watch, jail officials said this week. He has told jail guards he won’t accept news media interview requests. A telephone message left for one of his attorneys after business hours on Friday wasn’t immediately returned. Castro was arrested May 6, shortly after Berry broke through a door at the home, See CHARGES/Page 2
To kick off the summer seathe Sidney-Shelby son, County YMCA conducted its annual Splash water safety program Monday through Thursday, with about 500 youngsters participating. “As part of our commitment to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the Sidney Y was excited to provide residents with a week of water safety education and basic swimming instruction at no cost to participants,” said Sam Casalano, associate executive director. “Five different community organizations partnered together to provide another successful water-safety week. The generous contributions of the Sidney Daily News, as well as support from Minster Bank, Ruese Insurance and Westfield Insurance were tremendous. Because of the continued commitment and caring of our sponsors, we were able to offer lessons to over 500 participants in conjunction with over 30 volunteers and 25 staff members. The enthusiasm and dedication of all who were involved definitely made this year memorable, and it is most gratifying to see such a strong, community-wide commitment to safety and the welfare of children,” noted Casalano. Jeff Billiel, executive editor and publisher of the Sidney Daily News, which has helped sponsor the program for 27 years, also lauded the success of Splash. “Teaching young children how to be safe around water is a vital lesson that will stay with them the rest of their lives,” he said.
