Grand jury indicts local man for abduction, rape By Becky Brooks Managin Editor
SANDUSKY - Brian Jury, 38, 10701 Strecker Road, Bellevue, was indicted this week on multiple felony counts by the Erie County Grand Jury for attempted murder, rape and kidnapping of a Lorain area woman. On Friday, a $350,000 bond was filed in Erie County Common Pleas Court for Jury, record show. An indictment was filed Thursday. Jury is charged with attempted
murder, multiple counts of rape, and kidnapping, all first degree felonies and a count of felonious assault, according to court records. Jury continues to be held in the Lorain County Jail where is he being held on gun charges in that city. Erie County has issued a warrant for his arrest based on this week’s indictment. On Friday, Erie County S h e r i f f ’s Detective Sergeant Dennis Papineau said the department still has
an active investigation into this case. “We don’t have a whole lot to do,” he said Friday. On Nov. 1, a passerby on Strecker Road north of Bellevue saw a naked woman - whose hands and feet were bound with ties - along the country road. An off-duty deputy, Steven Hammersmith, also came by the same spot and the sheriff ’s office was called. The victim reported the suspect offered her a ride in Lorain. She recognized him and accept-
ed but then he abducted her at gunpoint, a deputy previously reported. She was brought to a camper on a Strecker Road property and repeatedly raped. Papineau said the department has searched Jury’s approximate 8-acre property on Strecker Road with the assistance of the FBI evidence recovery team using Sandy Lesko, who is a certified K-9 cadaver dog handler. The sergeant said nothing of significance was located in that search.
He also added that the sheriff ’s office is working closely with the Lorain City Police. The defendant was arrested in Lorain after an investigation into the rape. Papineau also stated the victim has been very strong and helpful in the investigation. Lorain Police also have charges filed on Jury who had two weapons in his possession at the time of his arrest that same day. Papineau said a background check showed that Jury has no other criminal record.

The Bellevue City Schools simulated an emergency situation at each of the buildings this week. In conjunction with the drill, staff practiced a mini parent reunification at the elementary and the middle school. A small number of parents pretended to “reunite” with students. This practice helped Bellevue City Schools and local law enforcement to take a critical look at the procedures in place for parent reunification at the schools. In the case of a true emergency, parents would be notified via school messenger and possibly other resources such as Twitter and the district website about the details of the reunification.
Smith sentenced to 9 years in April crow bar attack Two more defendants yet to face trail on multiple counts By Becky Brooks Managin Editor
NORWALK - On Thursday, Tyler G. Smith, 19, 154 Hamilton St., Bellevue, was sentenced to nine years in state prison for his attack with a crow bar against Austin Thorton in Willard on April 22. Huron County Prosecutor Russell Leffler said Friday that Smith was still being held in the Huron County Jail. Smith entered a guilty plea in October to a single count of first-degree attempted murder for the attack on Thorton, a St. Paris 19-year-old in Peru Township. Leffler said he asked the judge for the full 11-year sentence for Smith, who was originally indicted on five counts in May. On Wednesday, Smith appeared for sentencing in Huron County Common Pleas Court. The father of Austin Thorton, the victim in the April attack, attended and spoke for his son. “He indicated there was continuing problems the young man
had,” the prosecutor stated. Leffler also stated that it was Smith who used the crow bar to attack Thorton following a conflict concerning an ex-girlfriend. “He is the one who hit the guy in the head,” Leffler added. “We think (Thorton) was hit in the ribs and one in the temple.” Leffler said one of the witnesses referred to the attack as a shattering noise. Two other defendants were indicted in the attack. Connor Holbrook, 19, 840 Kilbourne St., was indicted for conspiracy to commit aggravated murder or murder, a first degree felony; two counts - second degree felonies of felonious assault; obstructing justice, a third degree felony; and tampering with evidence, a third degree felony. The night of the attack, Thorton was take to Willard Mercy Hospital and flown by Life Flight to St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo. He was later transferred to a rehabilitation facility. The cost of turkey and all the fixin’s? Mostly unchanged J.M. HIRSCH AP Food Editor
Here’s another reason to be thankful this holiday season — the cost of putting Thanksgiving dinner on the table is down slightly from last year. But don’t bank on those savings for any big Black Friday splurges. The average Turkey Day dinner will cost $49.04, or just 44 cents less this year than it did in 2012. And while every
penny counts, if you need to do any traveling to belly up to the big meal, increases in airline and train tickets mean that 44 cents won’t get you very far. The good news is that after some steep price hikes during the economic downturn about five years ago, food prices have remained mostly stable this year. It’s a welcome change from 2011, when the cost of Thanksgiving dinner jumped $5.73, up from See TURKEY | 8
