Time to remember, honor Rain doesn’t dampen Memorial Day service Rain dampened the cemetery Monday, but it couldn’t dampen the spirits of some 170 people who attended Sidney’s 2013 Memorial Day commemoration. “We started late,” said Chuck Craynon, a member of the local voiture of 40 and 8, the group responsible for organizing this year’s celebration. “We hoped the rain would stop, but it didn’t, so we moved everything inside.” About 100 people moved into the maintenance building at Graceland Cemetery. Another 70 people remained outside to participate. Guest speaker, Donald Ice, told the crowd, “A veteran knows the true meaning of this day and holds it as a sacred time to remember and honor all of the brave men and women that fought in the wars and conflicts to give us the freedom that we sometimes take for granted. This is a time to reflect on the friends that they made and the good times they shared, as well as the bad times and memories of those friends and buddies that paid the ultimate price and gave their lives that we might enjoy the freedom guaranteed by the Constitution of this great country. This is why the name was changed to Memorial Day. We remember those that should never be forgotten … The numbers that were killed in all wars
and conflicts since 1775 total over 1.2 million, and they deserve our respect and remembrance on this special day set aside for them.” The only change in the day’s program that was affected by the weather was the laying of wreaths, traditionally done at the flag pole in the cemetery. The wreath layings did not take place. Sunday’s brighter weather meant that other area commemorations went off without a hitch. In Port Jefferson, master of ceremonies Jim Hall, of Sidney, presented a program to about 40 people. Gold Star wife Carleen Pettit, of Sidney, participated in wreath layings with color guards from Sidney American Legion Post No. 217 and Sidney AMVETS Post No. 1968. The Rev. Dave Clem gave the benediction. Guest speaker Mike Bennett, of Sidney, gave the address. “When I was preparing for this time with you, I looked for reasons that would bring all of us here today, for commonalities, or threads that might weave themselves throughout these grounds,” he said. “For instance, what was it that William Hughes, who served in the Civil War and is buried just over there a bit would have in common with Michael Brandewie, who not See MEMORIAL/Page 10

Council OKs requests from two businesses BY MIKE SEFFRIN mseffrin@sdnccg.com Sidney City Council gave a boost to two businesses Tuesday night. Council approved legislation related to the redevelopment of the old Central School at 102 N. Miami Ave. for use as a banquet-reception facility and to the construction of a Holiday Inn Express at 500 Folkerth Ave.
Council also welcomed a new police chief and said goodbye to the current chief. Council adopted an ordinance rezoning the former school property from R-3 multifamily residential to B-1 local business and adopted another ordinance amending the planning and zoning code to permit banquet-reception facilities as a principal use in a B-1 district and as a conditional use in an R-3 district.
Darrell and Sue Nichols, 1799 Riverside Drive, owners of Central Business Enterprises, purchased the old school last July at auction. Darrell Nichols said previously that he expects the old school to be used for small wedding receptions, graduation parties and other events. Another use would be for basketball or soccer practices for a fee. Responding to a question from counSee COUNCIL/Page 4
