Mission group helps tornado victims BY ALYSSA RECK Staff Writer pdceditorial@civitasmedia.com HOLTON, Ind. — Over the past 15 months, dozens of volunteer groups have spent time in Holton, Ind., after a tornado hit the small town March 2, 2012. The town experienced destruction, houses shifted off foundations, downed power lines, debris, and the death of two residents. The Covington United Church of Christ mission group from Covington, volunteered in Holton, June 28 to July 3. ”After everything these people have been through, they are still able to trust people,” Joanie Shields said. The UCC mission group coordinated their trip through the Holton Long Term Recovery group, which is a private, nonprofit organization that was put in place to oversee the rebuilding of Holton. When planning the trip, the UCC mission group was unsure of what tasks they would be assigned, but found that there was still many things that they could do to help.

Later, a ribbon cutting ceremony was conducted, which many people attended to celebrate the occasion. Ironically, the ribbon used was caution tape. Other tasks done by the UCC mission group was cleaning, building porches, painting, and other odd jobs. Four UCC volunteers spent over an hour, sorting through bins filled with nuts, screws, bolts, and nails, to create an inventory of the supplies available. ”All money and donations go towards supplies, so after the work is done here, the plan is to pass the extra supplies forward, ” Philip Deiwert, volunteer coordinator of Holton Long Term Recovery Group, said. Residents recall the tornado and their survival. ”It pick and choose. A house across the street from us was
completely untouched,” Mike Cloney, resident of Holton, said. “But our house was gone.” Cloney was at home when the tornado hit. His children had just returned from school when the siren went off. His wife, Penny Cloney, was at work.
