Obama casts GOP as stubborn, ‘deadbeat’ BY JOSH LEDERMAN Associated Press JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Casting House Republicans as stubborn deadbeats, President Barack Obama sought Thursday to discredit House Republicans in upcoming fiscal fights by painting them as roadblocks to a thriving middle class. With Obama and Congress approaching all-toofamiliar showdowns over spending levels and the

nation’s borrowing limit, Obama used a visit to a seaside port in Florida to argue that the nation’s economic agenda should be immune to the partisan backbiting he faulted Republicans for instigating. “Shutting down the government just because I’m for keeping it open that’s not an economic plan,” Obama said, wiping sweat from his face in a muggy port warehouse. “Threatening that you won’t pay the bills in this country, when we’ve already

racked up those bills, that’s not an economic plan that’s just being a deadbeat.” In the last of three stops on a two-day tour to reframe his broad economic vision for the nation, Obama pitched the need for enhanced American infrastructure at this port and others across the country and for better roads, bridges and power grids. But while he touted his efforts to streamline permitting, the president offered no new proposals

for how Americans and their leaders could accelerate a lethargic economic recovery. Obama warned that if Republicans continue with their “my way or the highway attitude,” dire consequences could await for Americans. He encouraged voters to use next month’s congressional recess to tell Republicans who’ll be in their home districts that gridlock is unacceptable. “It could plunge us back into financial crisis,” the president

said. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., questioned the point of Obama’s big push in a speech on the Senate floor Thursday. “At some point, campaign season has to end and the working-withothers season has to begin,” McConnell said. “At some point, you have to stop promising an ‘ocean of tomorrows’ and start actually working with the representatives of the people.” Obama praised Senate

Boehner Sidney business opens Piqua site calls out rep for insult BY WILL E SANDERS Staff Writer

wsanders@civitasmedia.com

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker John Boehner on Thursday elevated his criticism of fellow Republican Rep. Steve King over King's suggestion that many unauthorized immigrants are drug runners, calling the comments "deeply offensive and wrong." Boehner already had issued a written statement earlier in the week condemning King's remarks, but at his weekly news conference he ramped up his criticism even without being asked. The Ohio Republican took the unusual step of calling King out by name, dramatizing the concern among GOP leaders that incendiary comments from the right can tarnish the party's image even as lawmakers struggle to find a solution to the immigration debate. "I want to be clear. There's no place in this debate for hateful or ignorant comments from elected officials," Boehner said. "What he said does not reflect the values of the American people or the Republican Party," the speaker said, "and we all need to do our work in a constructive, open and respectful way."

PIQUA — An expansion business of Elsner Painting & Pressure Washing Inc., which is headquartered in Sidney, has opened in Piqua and proves that while this sluggish economy has presented its fair share of problems for small business owners, it has also afforded others with the chance to expand and prosper. The Piqua location of Elsner Painting & Pressure Washing is at 1203 Covington Ave. and is being headed up by Ryan Cathcart, who is the vice president of sales and marketing for the company. The expansion business opened in May after Cathcart and Elsner owner, Kris Elsner, decided to expand the business. Cathcart said the solid business of the parent company is what allowed the business to open the Piqua location. “I live here and I love Piqua,” Cathcart said. “I wanted to give back to the community and I think we have what it takes. We can make Piqua look better one house or one building at a time.” Some of the services the company performs includes: all phases of industrial and commercial painting, floor coatings (epoxy, specialty, garage

Republicans for being willing to compromise on issues like immigration, then drew a distinction with House Republicans, whom he repeatedly accused of bringing the economy to the brink. But Obama, too, at times has taken an uncompromising approach with ultimatums that force his opponents to give in or no deal. 4-H BBQ fundraiser takes place Saturday BY MELANIE YINGST Staff Writer myingst@civitasmedia.com MIAMI COUNTY — Want to have a bunch of friends and family over for a fun, festive outdoor barbecue without all the work but with all the fun? Then leave the cooking to the professionals and head out to the Miami County Fairgrounds for its annual 4-H barbecue fundraiser beginning at 4 p.m. on Saturday. The traditional 4-H barbecue is the only event which raises funds

for awards such as the 10 yearplaques and other awards for each one of the county’s 4-H members, according to 2013’s 4-H barbecue coordinator Craig Lichtenberg. “It started out as an ice cream social years and years ago and has been a tradition for more than 50 years,” Lichtenberg said. “All the 4-H clubs help out each year at the barbecue and all the proceeds go to help with 4-H plaques and awards for the kids.” According to Lichtenberg, the annual 4-H barbecue is the only

fundraiser which benefits all Miami County 4-H club members. “All of the proceeds stays in the county,” Lichtenberg said.”It helps with Cloverbud Camp and supplies for the county fair. All the money we raise goes directly back to the kids.” This year, the menu includes Caven’s Meats’ beef and pork barbecue for sandwiches prepared by Chuck Lyons Catering. Dessert also includes ice cream, pies and cakes. “It’s a family affair,” Lichten-

berg said. “There will be games and activities for the whole family throughout the day with a dance at 8 p.m. for everyone to enjoy.” New activities for this year’s 4H Barbecue includes a Kiddie Tractor Pull which begins at 4:30 p.m. The Kiddie Tractor Pull is sponsored by the Miami County Agriculture Society. A display of unique antique tractors and farm equipment will be on hand courtesy of the Miami County See BBQ/Page 2
