W.Va family finds hope in Piqua Couple brings their three sons to Hahn-Hufford Center for a summer ‘Boost Up’ BY AMY MAXWELL For the Daily Call pdceditorial@civitasmedia.com
PIQUA - Summertime can be a time for school age kids to rest and rejuvenate before starting another school year. One family decided to do as much as they could with the time given to them this summer to repair some problems they were experiencing. Christy Wade, of West ISAAC HALE/STAFF PHOTO
Scott Wade helps his son Wesley, 6, across the monkey bars while his twin brother Walter, 6, waits his turn Thursday at the Hahn-Hufford Center of Hope, 1306 Garbry Road, Piqua. Both Wesley and Walter have ADHD. One of the many neurodevelopmental activities the center has to offer, the monkey bars aid in developing hand motor skills required to do tasks such as holding a pencil.
Virginia, heard about the Hahn-Hufford Center of Hope located in Piqua from a colleague in the same Mary Kay Cosmetics sales unit as herself and decided to give it a try. Christy has three boys Oliver, age 8, and twins Wesley and Walter, age 6. “Despite having to live away from home leaving my husband back home and having to put some of my business on hold, I thought it would be worth it,” Wade said. The Wades participated in Hahn-Hufford’s six week Summer Boost-Up Program as well as additional therapies offered at the Rehab Center. “I wasn’t sure what to expect, I felt almost hopeless as there are no places locally in West Virginia that offer the neurodevelopment program that Hahn-Hufford does,” Wade explained. “When I would seek help I would typically get responses like, ‘you need counseling, behavior

Oliver had been diagnosed with autism and Christy started noticing some reading comprehension delays and social issues especially while playing with other kids. “His aggression seemed to be getting worse and he even punched a hole in the
wall, all while getting taller and stronger so I needed to get the aggression under control,” Wade said. “He also was starting to be made fun of by his ‘friends’ because of his outbursts and aggression, I knew I needed to get help.” Walter had experienced a speech delay and was also experiencing behavioral problems. “The past See Hope/Page 2
Local teen wins grand champ title at state fair BY MELANIE YINGST Staff Writer myingst@civitasmedia.com FLETCHER — It’s a handshake that Colin Gump likely will never forget. Judge Cade Wilson, of Brownwood, Texas, shook 17 year-old Colin Gump’s hand selecting him as the exhibitor of the 2013 Ohio State Fair grand champion market lamb on Wednesday, July 24. “I was speechless to be honest,” said Gump when asked about his clean sweep of the junior fair market lamb events.
Gump, 17, a junior at Miami East High School, had a list of goals he hoped to accomplish at the Ohio State Fair with his market lambs. This year, he managed to check off both the showmanship and market lamb winners off his list, bringing home the royal purple banner and the showmanship trophy. Gump said it came as a complete shock and surprise to win the “best of the best” in junior fair market lambs in the state of Ohio. “I was really excited — I never thought this was
going to happen,” he said. Gump’s lamb, weighing 127 pounds, won its crossbreed division, putting him in the grand champion drive with more than 30 other champions in the show ring at the Ohio State Fair on July 24. “Honestly, I didn’t think my lamb was going to be big enough to win,” Gump said. “I was just happy to win my class.” Gump said it has always been one of his goals to win at the state fair.
