Sports Leadership Fitness & Exercise Level 4


This module will develop in students a knowledge and understanding of key concepts, theories, and issues, relevant to sports, fitness and exercise leadership instruction. It will also encourage students to evaluate personal performance, asses and manage risk, and develop professional qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment within the sport and leisure industry.

Module Focus




Knowledge Management


Appraise and evaluate the effects of sport, fitness and exercise interventions on participants making effective use of knowledge and understanding of the disciplines underpinning human structure and function. Show evidence of the skills required to plan, deliver, monitor and evaluate participant responses to sport and/or exercise.


Module Content Coaching Unit FU1 Knowledge and understanding of how to create a safe and equitable coaching/instructing environment (Health and Safety, Equity, Child Protection) FU2 Knowledge and understanding of coaching/ instructing techniques and styles (demonstrations, instruction and communication techniques) FU3 Knowledge of skill development definitions of skill coordination, motor skill learning, skill acquisition, skill retention, skill transfer and factors affecting skill development. Fitness Unit FU1 Knowledge of anatomy and physiology (cardiovascular system respiratory system cardio respiratory adaptations to training muscular-skeletal system) FU2 Knowledge of exercise physiology (components of fitness: principles of training; training methods; neuromuscular adaptations resistance training energy systems) FU3 Knowledge of weight management and nutrition including understanding the Physiological adaptations to exercise and training: (Energy balance and healthy eating)

A major project to devise and justify a realistic sports specific and participant centred analysis clearly outlining the skills, abilities and fitness components needed to be successful.
