Most people buy a lamp, extraordinary people design them Perhaps you have never designed a lamp before, but you are experienced in using 3D modeling software like Rhino, 3D Studio Max, Google SketchUp or Blender. We will help you to turn your idea into a one-of-a-kind pendant lamp. Let’s get you on the right track. Design by Pieter-Jan Debuyst & LaurensDekeyser
There’s something special about physically holding a design you’ve spent so many hours on.
Introduction
We want you to focus on the creation of designs –made by you– that add value to people’s lives, while we do the manufacturing.
How does it work?

The kit includes the following items:
•
an electrical assembly consisting of
•
a metal ceiling cap with transformer
•
a 2 meter long cable
•
a lamp holder and a bulb
•
your 3D printed lamp shade
•
a small leaflet explaining the installation, safety, and usage guidelines
Introduction
We provide you with the electrical assembly and you design your perfect lampshade around it. With our design kit, you’ll have everything to get started.
Download the Design kit Go to our website and select the software you want to design in. The downloadable design kit includesdifferent layers with aids and guides, which will help you make your design printable.

TIP
Once you’ve selected and downloaded the kit, you can get started. However, it’s best to read through the manual and get to know the do’s and don’ts.
Introduction
You can choose from the following software:
Content Design kit Open the design kit in your 3D modeling program and you will find:
The ceiling cap
Design Kit
The cable (length 2m maximum)
6 The metal lamp holder and bulb
The spherical safety zone
The bayonet connector
A reference shade

7 130mm
Example We find that a cube of 130mm or 5.12 inches is a nice size and it comes out to a reasonable price.
To help you design your lampshade, we have added an example to one of the layers. You can use it as a template or as a reference. The choice is yours.
Design Kit
You are free to design your lampshade as you want. However, you must keep your design within the maximum building volume of 650 x 330 x 560 mm (25.6 x 13 x 22 inch). Also keep in mind that the bigger your lampshade, the higher the price will be.
Step 2 - Attachment shade
8
Bayonet connector
Securing
We make use of a standard lampholder to attach the shade. This standard component (blue) works like a bayonet mount.
The shade is secured by first inserting the lamp holder into the connector Once inserted, the lampholder is guided downwards.
It is important for you, as the designer, to incorporate this bayonet connector into your design. Be sure to leave an opening so the lampholder can be inserted from the top.
By gently turning the shade counterclockwise, the lampholder will reach it final position. By pulling the shade down, you can check whether the shade is firmly secured.
TIP
You need to find a way to firmly attach this lamp fitting to the shade. You can see a few examples how to do that below.
Design Kit
The second step is all about making sure your shade fits the lamp holder. In order to help you with this, we have included an item called the bayonet connector.
Step 3 - Safety
Safety
Design Kit
Since we’re dealing with electricity, you have to make sure to include a spherical zone around the light bulb of Ø 6 cm / Ø 2.4 inches. This zone needs to remain completely open (hollow); it cannot contain any material. The starter kit contains a Ø 6 cm / Ø 2.4 inch sphere to perform this safety check. Place the sphere inside your lamp shade and make sure it doesn’t intersect anywhere with your design.
9 Airflow Include an opening for the cooling of your lamp by allowing airflow. When you have ordered and uploaded your table lamp, we also do this safety check ourselves. This way we can deliver the safest product possible.
1.2 inch
3cm 1.2 inch
3cm TIP
You should hide the light bulb in your lamp design. Not just for aesthetic reasons, but because the light produced can be pretty bright.

Material
Check the general design rules for polyamide on our material page.
Models in polyamide are constructed from a white, very fine, granular powder. The result is a strong, somewhat flexible material that can take small impacts and resist some pressure while being bent. The surface has a sandy, granular look, and is slightly porous.
Go over the following items to verify whether your design is ready for uploading.
Design Kit
Step 4 - Checklist
Building volume
10
Make sure your design fits inside of the maximum building volume 330 x 560 mm (25.6 x 13 x 22 inch) . If your model is too big, rescale it, but make sure you don’t lose too much wall thickness by doing so.
Wall thickness
Content upload
Check the wall thicknesses. The walls of your model need to be at least 0.8/1 mm thick and on-surface details or imprints can be 0.4 to 0.5 mm. Ideally the wall thickness varies between 1.5 and 3 mm.
Delete the references before uploading. Keep the lamp fitting in place in your design.
Step 5 - Upload Upload In order to have your design recognized as a pendant lamp, you need to upload via the pendant lamp page. Once you have selected your file and pressed open, your file will be uploaded to our 3D print lab.
When the upload is complete, a preview will be generated. This way, you can see if the upload was done correctly.
11
Material The material will automatically be selected since we only offer the pendant lamp shade in Polyamide. Choosing another material isn’t possible.
Color The color is limited to white. Selecting another color isn’t possible.
Checkout If you are happy with everything, you can complete the order by pressing the checkout button. You ‘ll be able to select the voltage of your country so we can send the appropriate transformer.

Example: Mars lamp by Pieter-Jan Debuyst & Laurens Dekeyser 1 Pieter - Jan and Laurens design a shade for a pendant lamp together and would like to have a real life model of it. They download the i.materialise pendant lamp kit.
12
5 Then Pieter-Jan and Laurens proceed through the rest of the necessary steps and order their lamp. They receive his 3D printed shade and electrical assembly in the mail. The lamp looks awesome, and is exactly how they pictured it!
2 Pieter - Jan and Laurens use the different layers and references to adjust their design, to check the safety zone, and attach the fitting.
3 Once they are happy with the model, they press the upload button and selects their file. Their file is quite big, so they visit some other websites while it uploads. The progress bar keeps them updated on it’s status.
4 Once the model is uploaded, they press the checkout button and selects the type of voltage (110 V or 220 V) they want the electrical assembly to be.
