BILLY
SORRELLS T h e S e x i e s t M a n i n C o m e dy
Billy Sorrells has been described as the quintessential perfect storm. Since setting up shop in Los Angeles this year, the actor, stand-up comic and independent filmmaker has emerged as an entertainment goldmine and the most talked about triple threat in La-La Land.
Y
Sorrells is best known for his role as ìPeachesî in the popular ìSh-t Black Girls Sayî series of Youtube parodies, which have amassed a staggering 15-million total views and counting. With the door of opportunity flung wide open to develop more groundbreaking content, the break out artist and businessman is partnering with Entertainment giant Black Entertainment Television (BET) on a new project destined to become the virtual jewel in his extensive repertoire. The web series, called Office Code BET is the brainchild of Sorrells and writer/ comedian Donte Barrett. The two found a way to transform typical workplace comedy shtick by adding a new dimension of original, humorous themes and shrewdly creative writing to introduce a flagship online sketch series that cleverly mocks the most outrageous, unacceptable office behavior. BET expects the revolutionary web-based show will ride the groundswell of successful projects already developed by Sorrellsí Aerion Studios, including the ìPress Playî initiative also developed for BET. The interactive, sharable content series is the first of its kind and if the demand for ìPress Playî is any indication, Sorrells and BET have another blockbuster hit on their hands. The Viacom-Owned cable network is placing major bets on Sorrellsí talent, tapping him as a correspondent on their Red Carpet during BET Awards 2012. His track record so far all but guarantees BET will reap lofty returns on every investment. With so much at stake, the world will undoubtedly be watching as Sorrells continues to shatter traditional ideas about film-making and online production. He is currently in talks with entertainment website Mevio/ Bite Size TV to develop a show that merges the savvy of digital culture with the glitz of Hollywood, distinctly packaged in theatrical features. Sorrells has also inked a deal with video-entertainment network Machinima, where gamers around the world will enjoy original programming, game trailers and news. His ever-expanding resume also includes radio show, Skits and Bits which airs on Jamie Foxxís Foxxhole. The Sirius Satellite show reaches an average 2.3 million listeners. Meantime, the gifted comic and celebrated You Tube phenomenon, co-stars in the movie ìBecause I Love Youî, written, and produced by Joe Elmore. Sorrells makes his big screen debut in this provocative crime drama and romantic thriller. Separately, a partnership with Houston-based promotion company Sol-Caritas and its founder Carlos Wallace helped Sorrells seal a lucrative contract for his ìDirty Sexy Funnyî stand-up show to feature exclusively at both the Arlington and Houston Improv comedy clubs. With so many noteworthy achievements under his belt, itís no wonder Billy Sorrells is fast becoming a household name, fielding requests from directors and producers throughout the industry eager to hitch a wagon to this sensationís rising star. Yet through it all, Sorrells miraculously manages to stay grounded and quite humble. Attributes that set this Southern gentleman apart as the ideal 21st century Renaissance Man.

Nycole Donovan Fine Artist
Nycole Donovan grew up in Acres Homes located in Northwest Houston. It was from spending most her childhood to herself that she developed a habit of being introspective. It wasn’t until she ventured out and moved to Washington, D.C. in 2002 that she began to consider herself an artist. At an early age, her father taught her to play chess and lectured her on the significance of spirituality, black culture and history. These lessons serve as the root of her inspiration. Much of her work is created with people in mind. Among the list of inspirations is music. Particularly, conscious music such as blues, soul, jazz, and rock that emerged during the 1950ís ñë70ís. Old black films, books, and stories told by her elders have given her the visions she applies to canvas today. At age 10 she began drafting poetry, short stories, and sit coms. This allowed her to open her mind and express humor, humiliation, deep thoughts, and self-awareness.
Since childhood, Donovan has had a profound appreciation for the visual and performing arts. She grew up admiring artists for their ability to freely and creatively express themselves. Although Donovan has exposed her imagination through various forms of creative expressions, mainly creative writing she has had no formal art lessons or training. Instead, she earned her degree in Political Science. She started painting in 2003 while living in Washington D.C., but didnít invest much of her focus to the painting art form until 2011. Additionally, her work is from a place of the past. Itís is from an unfamiliar past she can only imagine.

HALL for ALL
en Hall is campaigning to be the next Mayor of Houston. Some of us may remember him as the former Houston City Attorney that led a 200+ person legal department in the creation of the city’s affirmative action program. Others of us may recall him as the attorney that fought for justice in the cases of Ida Lee Delaney, Byron Gillum, Kennedy Heights vs. Chevron, and countless wronged individuals and families. Still others may know him as a man of abiding faith and an ordained minister. Each of these descriptions is true, but none of them is complete. So… who is Ben Hall?
B
Benjamin Hall, III was born into a very poor family in rural South Carolina. As a child, he became familiar with the pain and injustice that came with poverty. Ben was not a particularly strong student in his early schooling, and was told by a teacher that he was not meant for college and should take up a trade. That and other experiences propelled young Ben onto a path that led him to obtain a B.A. from the University of South Carolina, a Master of Divinity degree from Duke Divinity School, a degree from Harvard Law School, and a Ph.D from Duke University Graduate School. The lessons of fairness, justice and courage that he learned as a young man are still guiding principles for Ben Hall today. Hall founded his extremely successful and nationally recognized law firm, The Hall Law Firm, in 2000. The Hall Law Firm concentrates on litigation matters, including complex construction litigation, complex commercial and contract cases, as well as consumer/personal injury claims. When asked why there are still Houstonians that don’t know who he is, Hall says “Some people criticize me for not going out here and singing my own praise. But, I believe if I did that God would not bless me the way he has been blessing me in my practice. God gives his gifts to people who He believes can manage them effectively.” With all the personal and professional successes that Ben Hall as enjoyed, he describes his family as his greatest treasure. Married for over 31 years to his wife, Saundra, the Halls have two sons. Ben’s face lights up as he tells us that one son recently graduated from the University of St. Thomas, and another is a student at St. Thomas High School. We asked why a successful lawyer would decide to run for mayor. “I believe Houston is a renaissance city,” said Hall. “As I see it, Houston is the greatest city in the United States and has the potential to see so much greater.” The ideas that Hall believes will positively impact Houstonians are centered on several key issues.
Ben Hall believes that the mayor should aggressively recruit new and larger businesses to relocate to Houston. Ben Hall believes that communities all across Houston should enjoy the benefits of having wonderful streets, quality sidewalks and that everyone should enjoy the same amenities that their tax dollars provide. Ben Hall believes that Houston should establish a philosophy of not just catching and incarcerating individuals, but in creating real opportunities for rehabilitating individuals. Ben Hall believes that there is a more efficient way of running government. He states that there is currently a spider web operation of government in the Greater Houston area and that the city can work collaboratively with other government entities so that services can be maximized and spending power can be strengthened.
Hall is adamant that nobody can pay him off and because God has blessed him to be in a unique position where he cannot be bought and refuses to be bullied by special interest groups. “My campaign has a strong coalition of liberal democrats, moderate conservatives, African-Americans, and Hispanic voters from all parts of Houston. We are each made stronger when we focus on the growth and prosperity of Houston as our common goal.” Ben Hall is campaigning to be the next Mayor of Houston. LIVE BEAUTIFU NOW www.livebeautifulnow.org
ive Beautiful Now is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization founded by Lora Rosemon and Carmen Martinez. Originally, Live Beautiful Now began as a real-estate company owned and operated by Latrece Miranda Bell. In November 2003, Latrece was diagnosed with Bipolar I Disorder, and struggled with her mental health condition for over eight years. Latrece cycled through multiple outpatient and inpatient psychiatric facilities, multiple psychiatrists’ offices, pharmacies, negative encounters with law enforcement during manic episodes, and suicidal ideation during depressive episodes all while managing her real-estate company. Her family felt helpless and alone as Latrece’s condition continued to deteriorate. On April 20, 2011, Latrece succumbed to stress related symptoms of her mental illness and took her life. She was 32 years old.

There are no words to express the loss of Latrece, or the despair her family felt as they tried to find adequate help for her and understand her condition. While attempting to understand the loss, Lora and Carmen became aware of the barriers to treatment that Latrece and other minorities face when choosing whether or not to seek mental health treatment. In April of 2012, they began to transform the former real-estate company into a volunteer organization to honor the life of Latrece and ” on mental health issues in minority communities. In November of 2012, Live Beautiful Now was launched as an official 501c(3) non-profit organization. This year, the organization plans to extend their services throughout the Houston area. Live Beautiful Now will conduct a monthly campaign that includes informational newsletters, hosting fundraising events, partnering with other community organizations, and providing educational seminars. If you are interested in volunteering at one of their events, please contact the Operations and Managing Director, Tarsha Mims at Latarsha@LiveBeautifulNow. com If you would like Live Beautiful Now to participate at your event or would like to make a donation, please contact the Finance and Administrative Director, Carmen Martinez, at Carmen@LiveBeautifulNow.com.
