Preparation document World Congress Macedonia June-August 2011 Date: 16.07.2011 – 07.08.2011 Place: Macedonia (Skopje, Dojran, Prespa, Ohrid) Open for: all students and members of IAAS Participation fee: A - 320 €; B - 340 €; C - 360 €; D - 380 €; Alumni - 400 € While you stay in Macedonia, we will provide you enjoyable days, in which will be included accommodation, food, interesting lecturing and rich cultural program. We will have a lot of fun and you will be able to make many new friends, learn some new very useful things and enjoy all the advantages this congress gives you.

About your coming If you decide to come by plane, bus, train or car somebody from OC will welcome you, all you have to do is to announce (send email) how and when is your arrival. If you are planning to come earlier or stay few days after OC will help you find accommodation. 8 good reasons why you should come: 1. About World Congress 2011 Date: 16.07.2011 – 07.08.2011 Place: Macedonia (Skopje, Dojran, Prespa, Ohrid) Open for: all students and members of IAAS Participation fee: A - 320 €; B - 340 €; C - 360 €; D - 380 €; Alumni - 400 € We will stay in Skopje for 12 days in a student dormitory very near the Faculty for agricultural sciences and food. You will have three meals a day for the whole congress. The prices in Macedonia are suitable for students (example, you can buy beer 1,5 liters for 1,75 €, large hamburger with fries for 2 €, city bus prices are 0,5 €). The GA, trainings and the lectures will be in the Faculty’s premises. We will probably have short excursions in places near Skopje. In Dojran we will stay in Hotel Polin for four days. We will also visit food and wine processing facilities and cultural places near Dojran. In Prespa we will stay in holiday resort for three days. We will visit some food and wine processing facilities in Resen and Bitola. We will stay in Ohrid for three days in a student dormitory. In Ohrid you will have a lots of free time to see the beauties of the city and to have a good time.

About Macedonia

Official name: Republic of Macedonia (also recognized as Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) Area: 25,713 km2 Position: Macedonia is located in the central part of the Balkan Peninsula, in the south-eastern part of Europe. Climate: Macedonia has a transitional climate from Mediterranean to continental. The summers are hot and dry, with temperatures up to 36°C and the winters are moderately cold, with temperatures between -5°C and 10°C. Population: 2,114,550 – Most of them are Macedonians (65%), but there are also many people from other nationalities, for example, Albanians (24%), Turks (4%) and 7% other. All citizens have equal rights and responsibilities and enjoy full national equality.


Capital: Skopje, with a population of 670.000, is the administrative, economic and cultural heart of Macedonia. Language: The official language is Macedonian and official alphabet is Cyrillic. Many people have basics in English. Religion: The main religion in Macedonia is Christian Orthodox. There are also other religious communities in Macedonia: Islamic, Roman Catholic, and Jewish. Time zone: GMT + 1 Credit cards: International credit cards Visa, Master Card, Diners and American Express are accepted in the most shops, airline companies, hotels and restaurants. Banks and post offices: On week days they are opened from 08:00am to 05:00pm. On Saturdays from 08:00am to 03:00pm. In Skopje and other big cities in Macedonia, some banks and post offices are opened even on Sundays. Shops: Alimentary shops are opened daily from 06:00am to 09:00pm including Saturdays, while on Sundays they are opened from 08:00am to 02:00pm. Everywhere, there are stores open 24 hours a day. Markets are opened every day from 06:00am to 05:00pm.


About Skopje

Skopje is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Macedonia with about a third of the total population. It is the country's political, cultural, economic, and academic center. It was known in the Roman period under the name Scupi. The territory of modern Skopje has been inhabited since at least 4000 BC and remains of Neolithic settlements have been found within the old Kale Fortress that overlooks the modern city center. That means it has a very reach history with many important places interesting for see sighting. There are a lot of museums and archaeological sites that confirm the oldness of the city. Skopje is located on the upper course of the Vardar River and is located on a major north-south Balkan route between Belgrade and Athens. According to the 2006 official estimate, it has 668,518 inhabitants and is a center for metal-processing, chemical, timber, textile, leather, and printing industries. Industrial development of the city has been accompanied by development of the trade, logistics, and banking sectors, as well as an emphasis on the fields of culture and sport. The street Macedonia is the main walking street in Skopje. It is a pedestrian zone which links Skopje’s main square (named Macedonia) with the old railway station. There are many shops and cafes located on this street.

The public transport in Skopje is by buses which cover the whole territory of the city and some of the suburb territories. There is also a very good taxi service.


The nightlife in Skopje is perfect. There are a lot of night clubs and cafÊ bars playing different types of music. A lot of casinos are also present in Macedonia’s main city. If you want a bit more relaxing night you can go to some of our theatres and cinemas. The city abounds with a lot of restaurants which serve dishes from many countries.


About Ohrid

Ohrid is a city on the eastern shore of Lake Ohrid in the Republic of Macedonia. It has about 42,000 inhabitants, making it the seventh largest city in the country. The city is the seat of Ohrid Municipality. Ohrid is notable for having once had 365 churches, one for each day of the year and has been referred to as a "Jerusalem".The city is rich in picturesque houses and monuments, and tourism is predominant. It is located southwest of Skopje, west of Resen and Bitola, close to the border with Albania. In 1980, Ohrid and Lake Ohrid were accepted as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

About Dojran

Dojran is a city located on the western shore of Dojran Lake in the southeastern part of the Republic of Macedonia. Dojran is made up of two fisherman's towns; Nov (New) Dojran (settled from the end of World War I to World War II) and Star (Old) Dojran, which contains both old ruins and recent construction, especially hotels, resorts and restaurants.

About Resen

The little town of Resen is located in the verdant southwest of Macedonia, equidistant between Bitola and Ohrid. A town noted for its moderate climateand clean air, Resen is located in the valley of Lake Prespa to the west and in the shadow of the Pelister Mountains to the south. The town was first mentioned in the history books in 1337 when it was


part of the Macedonian kingdom based in Prilep. It is known specifically for its old architecture from the 19th century “Macedonian Renaissance.” One of the significant buildings in Resen is the Macedonian version of Versailles known as “Saraj.” Resen boasts a cultural center housing a rich ethnological and archeological museum collection. The area is known for its delicious apples, honey and wild herbs.

Useful information: 

In Macedonia, it is forbidden to smoke in closed areas (bars, restaurants…)

You can’t buy alcohol after 07:00 p.m.
