Picture This

wonderful homes created by innovative, dedicated people, and one of my all-time favourites remains a Georgian Bay island cottage I visited several years ago. It was a near-hundred-yearold structure that had been restored by new owners in the 1990s. A lot of rotting wood and old windows were replaced and several layers of roof were removed, but its square footprint and cool, shaded depths were retained and it was given a wraparound covered porch in the classic style of the cottages in the area. The owners even insisted on painting it dark green, its original colour; their architect proposed a change, but they couldn’t see it any other way. We all treasure our own vision of what is important in a summer getaway, be it a temporary stop or a favourite haunt that is revisited year after year. Given the fleeting nature of the season in most parts of Canada, many of

us hunger for light: time spent on the beach or in the woods, yes, but also—given that we are mostly city dwellers and we work in the summertime, too—ways to bring light into our homes and workspaces. So, there’s bound to be inspiration in the glimpse we offer you of three century-old city houses that have done just that (page 24). The architects and designers of these homes have smudged the borders between indoors and out, brought summer’s natural hues into the daily lives of these homeowners, and, more importantly, extended the time that they can enjoy the milder weather and the longer days, well into fall. Interestingly, these designers found three very different ways to do it. Have a look. Who knows? It may be time to update your mental image of what summer can be. Carolyn Kennedy Editor

t’s easy enough to understand what inspired the designer of our cover house once you look at the story, starting on page 34. The broad vista of the Mediterranean, spread out beyond the treed countryside of Ibiza, is, of course, completely arresting. It must have been an effortless decision to forgo a typical square house plan and instead string out the rooms along a single axis fronted by a glass wall—an unobstructed window on endless blue sea melting into sky. Blue, green, deep yellow, white: the bright, hot colours of summer are spread out as if on a painter’s palette before this lovely vacation home. I grew up visiting cottages on Ontario’s Georgian Bay, and its towering pines, rocky shores and cold grey-green depths will always be part of my mental picture of summer. In my job, I have the opportunity to visit some

DESIGNS FOR EASY LIVING What’s getting buzz? Three Canadian projects that have recently garnered acclaim

TWO-FAMILY COTTAGE

A pronounced V-slope on the roof of this award-winning vacation cottage offers an unusual take on traditional homes in the Quebec countryside.

At first sight, the cottage with the roof soaring sharply to the sky appears to be a chapel set amid the pastoral landscape of Val-SaintFrançois in Quebec’s Eastern Townships. Boldly sculpted on the slope of a small hill, La Cornette— as this spacious vacation house is known locally —features a striking gabled roof reminiscent of a nun’s headdress. The cantilevered all-wood “wimple” serves as a huge parasol sheltering the three-level home from rain as well as the blazing sun in summertime; in the winter, it directs a flood of natural light inside. Bands of horizontal windows act as gigantic louvres that filter sunlight, at the same time affording intriguing views of the countryside. La Cornette’s strong visual presence belies the resolve—and accomplishment—of YH2, its Montreal-based architects, to design a house with minimal impact on the environment. Built in a natural clearing, the home did not require a single tree to be felled. Sustainability was a top priority in creating the design and in selecting materials

and finishes that would integrate the structure with its setting. The site was chosen carefully, taking into consideration the sun’s path and local winds, along with the trees and groundcover on the property. The size of the clearing, in particular its width, dictated the home’s rectangular shape on the uneven terrain in a southwest-northeast orientation. A stand of pines offers protection from strong north winds, while on the south side the house is conveniently open to mild breezes, its numerous windows on all three storeys allowing for natural ventilation. Modelled on traditional Quebec houses that accommodated extended families, La Cornette provides 3,000 square feet of living space for its co-owners—two families with five children collectively—and a quiet venue away from the city for celebratory events. The house, which was completed last year, reflects the meticulous attention to detail in designing the layout and interiors to complement the lifestyle of the

occupants. Rooms are large and airy, and the storage options and beds—built into the windows—are innovative and functional. Wood was used abundantly, both as structural and finishing elements, by itself or in a rot-proof mixture of wood fibre and cement. The roof and exterior walls were shingled with thin, light wood pieces, which enabled the entire house to be built by hand without the use of heavy machinery. The floors are in light pine and, typical of Quebec homes, the pine-plank walls are painted white. This extensive use of wood increases the capacity of the house to retain carbon dioxide, and because no gypsum or plaster was used, the heating can be turned down when the residents are away with no risk of mould accumulating. The 2011 recipient of the Ordre des architectes du Québec’s Award of Excellence in the category of single-family residential buildings, La Cornette is relatively low-tech. Its architects, Marie-Claude Hamelin and Loukas Yiacouvakis, describe it as “an anti-machine for living”—a country house “far away from the world of machines, with architecture that…frees itself from that world.” —Dali Castro

Addressing the issues of cost and maintenance, which are inevitably involved in owning a getaway retreat, La Cornette facilitates the vacation-home experience with a simple solution: joint ownership. Two families—one of them the architects’—who have been friends for years share the expenses and responsibility of maintaining the house. They can take turns staying at this country cottage, but because it’s spacious enough, both families can spend time together in it. Geared for convenience as well as enjoyment, the layout features common and private spaces to accommodate children and grown-ups alike. The furniture is almost exclusively comprised of made-to-order pieces, especially designed to maximize the space and shared family activities—a large refectory table for dining, the wraparound couch hugging the walls in the living room, a day table with hideaway TV, plus sleek floating bunk beds and wall-to-wall beds for sleeping foot-to-foot. A whimsical touch: night lights on the aluminum-panel wall of giant cut-outs of fireflies, frogs and fish. —D.C.

URBAN SPA Montreal, Que. Scandinave Les Bains Vieux-Montréal —awarded first prize this year for commercial interior design by the Ordre des architectes du Québec and a Governor General’s Medal in Architecture in 2010—offers respite from the stresses of city life. Its convenient location—literally mere steps off the street, specifically rue de la Commune ouest in Old Montreal, facing the port—belies the serene world within this 10,700-square-foot spa on the ground floor of a former warehouse that was rebuilt after extensive fire damage. Demonstrating a marked architectural restraint, its designers—Saucier + Perrotte architectes—let the expanses of open space and natural elements speak for themselves. In a tribute to the spa’s concept of thermal therapy, volcanic rock and glacial forms were incorporated into an interior landscape of subtle undulations on the floor, creating gentle slopes and depressions to generate basins of water for bathing. To echo the “movement” of the uneven flooring, the ceiling curves; made of dampresistant Brazilian walnut, it complements the austerity of the white marble mosaic walls. Opalescent glass allows natural light in while still affording privacy and also enhancing the tranquil ambience. Heated cantilevered benches in black slate provide resting places during the bathing cycle, as well as visual interest. —Dali Castro

Saint John, N.B. Happinez is a warm wine bar—especially on a typically foggy evening in Saint John, N.B. But on a bright weekday afternoon, in a port city that’s no stranger to rain, this downtown bar had a hard time attracting after-work sun seekers to the cellar level of a historic building. Happinez owner Peter Smit wanted an outdoor space that would complement his wine bar without compromising the façade of the Brodie Building, an Italianate structure built in 1878, back when “there was no precedent for patios,” Smit notes. His ﬁrst step: Engage two of his wine bar’s regular patrons, Monica Adair and Stephen Kopp, co-founders of Acre Architects, a Canadian design practice based in Saint John. A concept that began appropriately enough—over a glass of wine—soon evolved into a patio design that received a standing ovation when presented for approval to the Heritage Development Board of Saint John. “They realized it was unique,” says Smit. “Most patios are built from the cheapest materials and have umbrellas emblazoned with the names of alcoholic drinks. This was an effort to make something special.” The new space takes its name from a fusion of his bar’s name and the term patio. Hapito, only

4½ feet wide by 25 feet long, is a modernist mix of solid surfaces and open spaces corralled by interlocking wooden slats. And although it has a small footprint, Hapito has already had a broad impact. It was chosen from more than 100 submissions for inclusion in last year’s travelling exhibition “Twenty + Change,” a showcase for emerging Canadian architects. “Hapito demonstrates the importance of investing in smaller spaces,” says Adair, “and not only out of respect for the environment. Building small offers an opportunity to investigate details that are often overlooked in a large project.” —Suzanne Robicheau

OPEN HOUSE Architects and designers share their ideas for updating city homes with unique indoor-outdoor spaces.

DESIGN: Paul+O Architects LOCATION: London, England Paulo Marto and Paul Acland, from Southern Africa and New Zealand respectively, approached this London Victorian with a “frontier” perspective. “We share a strong culture of outdoor living, which we try to bring to our projects in the United Kingdom,” says Marto. “There is always a strong link in our projects between the architecture and the landscape.” To “open up” the house, the architects focused on retooling the rear; retaining the integrity of the street façade was vital. They began with the staircase, relocating it from the back of the home, where it had forced the main rooms to face north to the street. This freed up the south-facing garden view for more windows, which now permit natural light to fill the space. The client originally pushed for an open-plan layout, but Marto and Acland stayed true to the original Victorian plan. Instead, they created “views” from one room to the next, linking spaces without losing the Victorian spirit. They replaced an “unimaginative” single-storey extension with a double-height 6-metre space. With its minimal design and sparse decor, the addition distinguishes itself from the original Victorian, yet unifies the first and second floors. The architects worked with Jofebar—the cutting-edge Portuguese metalworkers—to design an enormous, motorized triple-sash window frame for the rear extension. “Jofebar had already developed a prototype in their factory,” says Acland, “but this house was the first project in the world where the window was installed.” Swiss manufacturer Vitrocsa provided the 6.4-by-4-metre “guillotine” window—two-thirds of which can be open at any time, like the quintessential English sash window. Inside, artificial lighting is operated by an intelligent energy-saving system, which increases or diminishes the amount of artificial light in use, depending on how much natural light is available. SMART DETAIL You might think six metres of glass would be hard to clean, but each section can be brought down to a 4-metre height—a cinch for even an amateur with a ladder. —Ellen Himelfarb MATERIALS PALETTE

DESIGN: Hudson Architects LOCATION: Cambridge, England This 1912 home, designed by the renowned Arts and Crafts movement member M. H. Baillie Scott, had been given an inelegant extension in the later years of the century, which took little advantage of its garden setting. In 2010, London-based firm Hudson Architects replaced it with a contemporary glass-walled pavilion that provides unimpeded views, affording year-round enjoyment of the garden. Baillie Scott’s original design included an open-air loggia off the back of the house, so architect Anthony Hudson created this new space in that spirit. Four round steel columns support a flat-topped metal-clad roof, while glass panels wrap around the structure, creating what Hudson describes as a “distinct transparent volume.” In addition, the elongated proportions and simple classical style of the pavilion reference a Greek temple. The four walls of the pavilion are made of argon-filled double-glazed panes that require no traditional framing or mullions; the panes, essentially butting together and wrapping around the structural columns, support themselves. The extension connects to the house via a three-foot-long glassenclosed corridor that dovetails with the original threshold to the loggia and “reinforces the conceit that it is a completely separate structure,” Hudson says. “When you leave the main house, you are very aware that you are entering another world.” Even the floor of the bridge is transparent—a 25-millimetre-thick piece of glass that floats about 18 inches off the ground and has stripes etched into it to create a non-slip surface. The pavilion was designed for use in cold weather, and it was tested this past winter, “one of the coldest in England for ages,” Hudson says. Contrary to the expectation that the space would experience a lot of heat loss through the glass walls, the high U-value of the glazing and hot-water underfloor heating combined to keep conditions comfortable. For backup, the architect also installed a hot-water radiator, but he notes the homeowners rarely used it. In summer, the pavilion can get warm, but cross-ventilation is afforded by double doors to the garden on an axis with the glass-walled corridor and with windows on the opposite side of the main house. As well, the roof’s deep overhang provides shading. SMART DETAIL By setting the structure on a low platform of reclaimed bricks that match those of the house, the architect de-emphasized the base and reinforced the subtle impression that the pavilion floats above the ground. —Carolyn Kennedy MATERIALS PALETTE

DESIGN: Meyer Davis Studio LOCATION: New York City As part of a renovation that transformed an eight-unit apartment house into a single-family dwelling, New York City design firm Meyer Davis Studio installed a wall of glass on the back façade, with the goal of bringing as much light as possible into the house. Inside, the house now has a contemporary, open “downtown loft” feel, say design principals Will Meyer and Gray Davis. The modern look extends to the subtly asymmetrical grid of bronze-framed windows on the upper levels and a bank of sliding doors that entice both residents and guests from the ground-floor kitchen out to the 18-by-30-foot yard. The new owners were fortunate to have tall oaks, maples and elms—a natural privacy screen along the two sides of the yard and the rear. “The really beautiful backyard was one inspiration for the makeover,” Meyer says. “It’s so lush and green back there.” They added a low stucco wall with a wooden railing where ivy will grow over time. The unexpected dividend in the garden is the lap pool. At 15 feet wide, it almost spans the yard’s width, and its 4-foot depth is comfortable for a morning swim workout or for the family’s two young children to splash around in. The designers had planned to install the pool flush with the terrace but discovered they couldn’t blast down through the bedrock. So, they raised the pool above the level of the terrace, making it more of a feature in the yard. They also built a surround, back wall and steps of ipê, a hardwood that can withstand New York winters, requires no maintenance and will weather to a beautiful natural silver. The ipê is carried through from the kitchen cabinetry to built-in open storage flanking the barbecue. White Paloma limestone, a durable choice for the terrace floor, adds an element of sophistication, perfect for entertaining. SMART SOLUTION The renovation included bumping out the ground-floor kitchen by 275 square feet, which created a generous terrace off the second floor, where the dining and living areas are located. To facilitate the easy flow of guests from this entertaining level to the backyard, the designers added an iron stair with “a nice little spiral.” It’s a compact solution to aid circulation that has its design counterpart indoors in a massive plaster spiral staircase

Designer Stéphane Parmentier didn’t need a brief for this villa near the village of Sant Josep de sa Talaia, in western Ibiza. “The brief came from the island and from the view—so nice, so peaceful,” he says. ashion designers often turn to interiors in the lull between seasons, whether to decorate a New York penthouse, a Mediterranean yacht or a hotel in Marrakech. But few have done an about-face like Stéphane Parmentier’s. The 44-year-old Paris-based designer began his career in the late 1980s at Lanvin, progressing through a stint with Karl Lagerfeld before landing a job as director of women’s ready-to-wear at Givenchy. More than a decade ago, after a string of interiors successes that included designing Singapore Airlines’ first-class and business-class cabins, he turned to home design full-time. He displays an encyclopedic knowledge of classic 20th-century furnishings in a range of projects, from London, Geneva and Paris to the South of France and even Miami, deploying quiet Corbusiers and flamboyant accessories by Jaime Hayón as if they were long-lost lovers. Such are the skills of an old fashion hand: knowing how to pair vintage and contemporary in a fresh, 21st-century way. But as often as not, Parmentier applies his passion for modern furnishings to his own designs. He has put his name to a collection of wood and marble stools for Swiss manufacturer Ormond Editions, and he has fashioned a line of shapely furnishings and accessories through his own practice. In September he will launch a collection of objets for the Paris-based silversmith Christofle, with a line of lighting to follow in late 2011. In 2007 Parmentier completed this sociable seaside villa in Ibiza, near Sant Josep de sa Talaia, using an earth-wind-and-fire palette of whites, tans, yellows and a flash of sky blue. The pièce de résistance is the spectacular view.

Rather than a working fireplace—an idea the client vetoed— Parmentier played on the Ibiza nightlife theme with mirrored disco balls in various sizes. Beside the white Chubby Chair by Marcel Wanders is a pair of Tie and Dye stools by Parmentier himself.

Right: The home’s elongated architecture lends it serious viewing potential—both out to the sea and within the house itself. The living and dining areas are ideal for entertaining large groups (as the owner is known to do), like a private seaside club. Mirrors and windows of varying shapes play with the views and the abundance of natural light while providing a foil for the home’s strict geometry—quite like the Enterprise coffee table, with its circular cutout, designed by Parmentier for this project. The sofa, upholstered in three different fabrics in contrasting whites, can easily seat eight for sundowners.

isolated coves and beaches). Meanwhile, coastal towns like the capital, Eivissa, still boast spectacular hilltop churches, tiled villas and architectural landmarks. A giant egg-shaped sculpture in the centre of Sant Antoni de Portmany on the west coast commemorates Christopher Columbus, who, locals claim, was born nearby. Contemporary architects too are being lured by local coffers heaving with tourist dollars. On the east coast, Santa Eulària des Riu is now home to a new stone congress centre by architects Jesús Ulargui Agurruza and Eduardo González Pesquera. Residents from Europe and beyond are contributing to the wealth of modernist architecture, with whitewashed villas perched on cliffsides. In the southern area of Sant Josep de sa Talaia particularly, where entertainment devotees live so close to, yet so far from the city’s nightlife, stepped bungalows with immense windows opening onto the sea lie in wait for guests to jet in from the continent. —E.H.

IBIZA One of Spain’s Balearic Islands—little sister to Mallorca and Minorca, off Spain’s east coast, near Valencia—220-square-mile Ibiza is the California of Europe. Once a tranquil island of a few thousand Catalan fishermen, it was “discovered” in the 1960s by hippies and artists looking for creative inspiration with some romantic adventure on the side. Their rocky idyll caught on among the masses, particularly dance-music lovers and the DJs who headline at now-legendary clubs like Pacha and Space. Eventually, Ibiza got its own international airport, yacht club and celeb residents—Jade Jagger, Elle Macpherson, Noel Gallagher and DJ Pete Tong among them—along with a reputation as a hedonist’s paradise. Still, many areas of Ibiza have maintained their rural mid-century character. The undeveloped north has just a fraction of Ibiza’s 125,000 residents but the bulk of its pine forest (which protects the island’s most

In the master bath, the tub is wrapped with limestone and the vanity is made of limestone slabs; a mirrored wall appears to double their length. Indeed the mirrors are integral to creating illusions: for example, that one is surrounded by lush green forests and mountains. Like all the other rooms in the house, the bathroom is open on the Mediterranean sea side. A large shade, unseen here, can be lowered for privacy.

Left: The 2,200-square-foot single-family house is composed of prefabricated elements and ready-made components that can be assembled, from the platform up, in six weeks. Assembly begins with ﬂoor and ceiling panels (called “smart cartridges”) that distribute radiant heating, water, ventilation and electricity. Wall panels containing insulation, windows, interior ﬁnishes and the wood rain screen form the exterior cladding. A key element of KieranTimberlake’s design was that the house be entirely recyclable. It can be disassembled easily and, with parts intact for future use in another capacity, will generate zero waste. be sure, a beach house should enjoy spectacular light and views. The challenge was to build these into the design for this Malibu weekend home, yet create maximum privacy from its neighbours— which sit a mere six feet away on either side of an unusually narrow 33-footwide lot within a colony of similarly slim lots. Still, rather than play down the property’s linear dimension, the architects chose to emphasize it in their design of this contemporary California house, completed in 2009. “We decided the circulation through the house should feel long and

narrow,” says Taal Safdie, a Montreal native who, with her husband, Ricardo Rabines, heads up the San Diego–based firm Safdie Rabines Architects. The architects placed the main corridor, two staircases and a mezzanine within an atrium that runs along most of the east side of the building and is open above to the home’s full three-storey height. Rooms on both upper and lower levels span the length of the corridors, tucked away behind partial walls that both obscure and reveal them. Heading up the stairs, you’re greeted at the top with a view out to the water; when you go downstairs, as you reach the bottom, the garden is spread out before you. And upon entering the house, you look down the elongated vista of the airy atrium and the ocean is straight ahead. The narrow house needed as much volume as possible within its lofty dimension, so the architects gave it a distinctive vaulted roof, which maximizes space on the upper floor and adds to the expansive feel of the atrium. The vaulted roof has a softer, less traditional look than a peaked roof, Safdie says. In Malibu, where there is a mix of very traditional and very modern homes—many of them extremely formal in look and many unique—this home’s roofline and warm woods are the features that most set it apart. Here, the two elements come together: fixed teak slats across the curved glass ceiling and extending partway down the wall temper the vast scale of the atrium space and create a warmer look than a glass-enclosed house would ordinarily have. They also provide shade and, Safdie notes, cast

“really beautiful shadows that change throughout the day.” The nature of a weekend home should be simplicity itself, offering a place one can occupy for short periods without much planning or need for alteration. Complicating things a little, the owners had never before lived in a modern home; and while the husband was game for the experience, the wife specified that the house had to be “extra warm.” The architects responded by assembling a limited palette of materials, an idea that serves and also reinforces the philosophy of simplicity. The entire ground floor is covered in limestone, with a roughened version skirting the pool; the pale sand colour ties in nicely with the beach surroundings. Two woods are in use: teak for the wooden beams in the atrium, built-in cabinetry, and the furniture and finishes in the master bedroom; and Australian walnut, which has the warm, reddish tones of teak but with a more distinctive grain, creating interest on the display cabinetry in the living room, kitchen and dining area. Together, the woods provide warmth within a sleek modern aesthetic. All else in the house is painted white; there’s no desire to fight with the setting. The main event, after all, is the outdoors: the garden and the ocean, and a view of one or the other can be had from any spot in the house. It doesn’t get much simpler than that.

THE NATURE OF A WEEKEND HOME SHOULD BE SIMPLICITY ITSELF, OFFERING A PLACE ONE CAN OCCUPY WITHOUT MUCH PLANNING. The ocean-facing back of the house is a floor-to-ceiling glass wall on both levels. On the second floor, the master bedroom has a walkout to a private deck with a glass-panel railing in the same style as the one fronting the pool below. BING THOM’S URBAN VISION

The site was a typical 90-foot lot in a good Vancouver neighbourhood, but not particularly distinguished. There were no real views, so to design the house, we had to ﬁrst design its setting. The home was designed as a pavilion that looks out into ﬁve different gardens. We started by asking: What are the garden views we want them to see?

Celebrated British Columbia architect Bing Thom has made his mark in public spaces in Western Canada and in the United States, Europe and China. A member of the Order of Canada and the recipient of a string of architecture awards, Thom was awarded, this past spring, Architecture Canada/RAIC’s highest honour, its Gold Medal, bestowed for “a signiﬁcant and lasting contribution to Canadian architecture.” Here, in excerpts from his new book, Bing Thom Works, the architect provides an examination of two of his ﬁrm’s projects—a unique private residence in Vancouver and an acclaimed theatre renovation in Washington, D.C.

ABOUT BING THOM • Bing Thom was born in 1940 in Hong Kong and immigrated to Vancouver in 1950.

• In 1966 he received a bachelor’s degree in architecture from the University of British Columbia and, three years later, a master’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley.

• After graduating from Berkeley, Thom taught architecture at the National University of Singapore and then worked for a year in Tokyo with the acclaimed architect-urbanist Fumihiko Maki.

• Returning to Canada in the early 1970s Thom worked as a project director for Arthur Erickson, who had been his mentor at UBC. Thom oversaw major projects such as the Robson Square complex of government ofﬁces and law courts in downtown Vancouver and Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto.

• In 1982 Thom founded his eponymous ﬁrm, Bing Thom Architects, based in Vancouver. Among BTA’s many noteworthy projects is the multi-awardwinning Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at UBC, the Epcor Centre for the Performing Arts in Calgary, and the Surrey City Centre Library in suburban Vancouver. One of Thom’s best-known projects is the zinc-clad Canada Pavilion for Expo ’92 in Seville, Spain, which was retained as a legacy of the fair.

• Bing Thom was honoured this year with a Gold Medal from Architecture Canada/RAIC. BTA has also been the recipient of the prestigious Firm Award from Architecture Canada/RAIC, in 2010.

he Arena Stage theatre company’s two heritage buildings, the Fichandler Stage (built in 1960) and the Kreeger Theater (added in 1971) were largely untouched [in the renewal project], but we demolished the connecting structures, including lobbies and ofﬁces, burying all the back-of-house administration and classrooms. We added the Kogod Cradle Theater, meant to support the creation of new plays, and celebrated the three theatres—two heritage, one new—by wrapping them in glass, topped by a lavish roof that just happens to be on axis with the Washington Monument. The two existing theatres were refurbished, with the aim of attracting speciﬁc audiences: the Fichandler would feature classic American plays, the Kreeger would present contemporary American theatre. The new 200-seat Cradle Theater would nurture emerging plays and voices. Most important was a lobby large enough to allow audiences to mingle during intermissions and at the end of performances. Arena Stage’s creative director, Molly Smith, wanted different audiences to collide and share their Arena experiences.

ARENA STAGE Washington, D.C.

In 2010 Bing Thom Architects completed the renewal of the Arena Stage, located in southwest Washington, D.C. The theatre has been widely praised, both for the success of the project itself and for its goal of contributing to the revitalization of the neighbourhood.

One of the key technical requirements we faced in renovating the two existing theatres was to improve their acoustic isolation from outside noise. This was complicated signiﬁcantly by the fact that the theatres are listed as historic structures; there is not much you can physically alter. To get around this dilemma, we came up with the idea of wrapping the theatres in a transparent building skin that would keep the noise out. This ended up taking the form of a 55-foot-high laminated glass wall surrounding the buildings. We also wanted to maximize transparency. We wanted people passing by to see the activity inside, as well as theatregoers to see out, because there is a great view of the Washington Channel.

Bottom, left: The lobby and circulation areas are composed of a series of “found” spaces between, around and on top of the theatres. As a result, you can never see the whole space and you are constantly tantalized and intrigued by what might be around the corner. This natural desire to investigate the space is further heightened by providing multiple opportunities to people-watch—allowing the audience to be either actor or voyeur as they explore. Right: In order to maximize the wall’s transparency, we tilted the glass to minimize reﬂections, similar to an aircraft control tower. Drawing on experiences with big, high, tilted glass windows in two previous projects, we introduced a wooden support system. These are large, heavy timber columns that do double duty. They hold up the roof and they hold up the glass/window system. We wanted the Arena building to be even more transparent than the earlier projects, so we spaced the columns farther apart, allowing us to use bigger sheets of glass. To support this, the columns had to grow in size, but we shaped them into an elliptical form to reduce their visual impact (bottom, right). We designed the base supports for the columns to recall the delicacy of a ballet dancer en pointe.

A 55-foot-high laminated glass wall surrounding the buildings also enclosed the space between the theatres, creating the large lobby that the creative director was keen on. It can accommodate the audiences of all three venues at the same time, allowing them the opportunity to share their experiences. 64

The change of scale for people moving from a large lobby to an intimate 200-seat theatre space is quite profound and we did not want it to be too abrupt. For the Cradle Theater, we separated the lobby’s sound and light from the interior of the theatre by bringing the audience in through a narrow spiral entry. By “squeezing” people in, we gave them a unique experience, one that introduced the drama of a new space. So, when they actually enter the small theatre, it seems to be quite a large space in comparison.

Because the Cradle is meant to nurture new plays, we wanted an oval shape with some character of its own to let the artists feel safe and comfortable taking risks. However, the oval is bad for acoustics; concave walls focus sound to different parts of the interior space, making it harder to hear. We needed an acoustically permeable wall that was also visually enveloping. After experimentation, ďŹ rst with vertical poles and then with horizontal arrangement of boards that sound would leak through, we came up with the idea of weaving horizontal strips of wood like a basket. We brought in a shipwright who taught us how to steam wood, making it pliable enough to take the basket-weave curves. The acoustics worked!

Arena Stage is in a neighbourhood that had never recovered from the destruction associated with a brutal urban renewal attempt in the 1960s. We were convinced that we should reinvent it, that we could create something extraordinary on the original site, and that we could use Arena as a catalyst to reinvigorate the neighbourhood.

t was designed to house artifacts that have stood the test of time, but in May, Vancouver’s Museum of Anthropology was honoured with a major architectural award for its own enduring value. Long considered one of Arthur Erickson’s ﬁnest works, the MOA is one of four buildings to receive the prestigious Architecture Canada/RAIC Prix du XXe Siècle Award, which recognizes the lasting excellence of signiﬁcant Canadian architecture. And while the building has undergone a major expansion, completed in 2008, museum staff have worked closely with Erickson and his contemporaries to ensure that the architect’s original vision is honoured. “It’s an iconic building in an iconic surrounding,” says Waters, who is thrilled that the MOA garnered the award. “I don’t think it will ever age.
