Student Sponsorship Programme (SSP) has been awarding high school Scholarships to South Africa’s most talented students for 10 years. WHAT DOES THE SCHOLARSHIP OFFER?

“Developing leaders for South Africa”

    

Tuition fees for five years at each of the Student Sponsorship Programme’s partner high schools Set stipends to cover school uniforms, text books, stationery, sport equipment and school educational trips Continuous support through leadership and personal development workshops SSP activities such as orientation camps, fun days and community service days Psychological support and extra lessons (where necessary) An assigned mentor to each Student Sponsorship Programme Scholar

Currently in grade six (2011) Twelve years or younger at the year of application Attaining an aggregate of 65% or above in their latest report Attaining 65% or above for math, natural sciences and English Financial need

WHAT ARE THE STEPS IN THE SELECTION PROCESS?    

Applicants should meet the set minimum criteria Eligible learners will sit for an exam to assess the learners’ linguistic and numeracy skills Qualifying learners and their families will sit for interviews and other assessments During the grade 7 year (2012), shortlisted learners will complete the Student Sponsorship Programme’s nine month Scholars Development Programme Successful Scholars Development Programme candidates will be awarded the Student Sponsorship Programme scholarships in the year 2013

Grade 6 – SSP Scholarship Application Form LEARNERS WHO MEET ALL OF THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA NEED APPLY:     

Currently in grade six (2011) Twelve years or younger at the year of application Attaining an aggregate of 65% or above in their latest report Attaining 65% or above for math, natural sciences and English Financial need

QUALIFYING LEARNERS NEED TO DO THE FOLLOWING: Please tick on the box once you have fulfilled the requirement 1. 2.

Complete the attached form (Section A and Section B) Attach copies of the following items to the completed forms: I. Latest term exam report II. Copy of birth certificate In the absence of the birth certificate, proof of application, or a hospital birth record can be submitted. In a case of orphans or vulnerable children, a letter from the caregiver’s organisation / social worker must be attached stating the reason/s. III.

Copies of the pay slips of both parents/legal guardians If the parents/legal guardians/care-givers are unemployed, an affidavit stating the same must be attached. (Please note that a stamped affidavit must be obtained from the police station)

Three - month bank statements of both parents/guardians, where applicable

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO PARENTS / GUARDIANS/CAREGIVERS 

Submitting an application form does not guarantee the awarding of the scholarship. Applicants need to qualify and complete the selection process before being considered for the scholarship. The decision to award the scholarship rests solely with the Student Sponsorship Programme

Due to the high numbers of applications received, only applicants who meet the minimum application criteria will be contacted telephonically. It is important that parents/guardians/caregivers provide us with the correct contact numbers

Incomplete applications and applications that do not meet the SSP criteria will be rejected

Non South African citizens attending South African schools need to have valid refugee status documents in order to apply

Non Gauteng applicants need to be able to relocate to Gauteng, and find a finishing primary school at their expense in order to be able to attend the Scholarship Development Programme in their grade 7 year

Faxed or emailed application forms will not be accepted

Top performing learners will be invited for interviews. Shortlisted learners will complete the Student Sponsorship Programme’s Scholars Development Programme in their grade 7 year. At the end of the year, successful Scholars Development Programme learners will be offered scholarships at SSP’s prestigious partner high schools in Johannesburg where their education will be funded for five years. The scholarship will cover tuition, school uniforms, stationery, textbooks, sport equipment and school educational trips. Scholars will also benefit from SSP’s continual leadership development camps and personal development workshops.
