CHONGZHOU CITY, SICHUAN PROVINCE

Project Type Level Site Location Status Tutor

Pavilion Year 4, Design Studio ( 1 Year ) Chong Zhou City , Sichuan Province Individual Work Adam Holloway

The village is called Bamboo craft village in China, with a strong atmosphere of rural life and close neighborhoods is a typical representative of the local living environment. After looking into the current situation and needs in person, the designer of the village, the village leaders attempt to create a rural infrastructure space integrated with a cultural industry system sensitive to the ecology, culture, industry and lifestyle of the village.

Characteristics Bamboo is typically a fast-growing perennial with some species growing as much as 30 cm per day. And can be used as an alternative construction in the architecture language. I believe that bamboo had a lot of potential in the built environment in the vernacular architec ture and can bridge a gap between past and present. Traditional and new technologies. Within the digital fabrication principles, it can carry out new design prototypes and can be developed a new design language in the experiments and parametric architecture in the vernacular.

Bamboo Gridshell Pavilion The original site - Bamboo Craft Village is a positive result of In Bamboo project, which was origi nally from a traditional Chinese poem, describing the ideal relationship between a house and its rural bamboo forest surroundings. Typically, bamboo weaves were used in small-scale objects like torus and baskets. Gradually, tradi tional bamboo weaving and knitted skills can be transformed by digital tooling. The new gridshell Pavilion demonstrated a new bamboo language and the architecture interacts with traditional bamboo weaving techniques. The new environment provides a context for re-examining the new space between the village and the city. With a new rural architecture industry, per-fabrication and construction will establish the founda tion of a new denition for rural architecture in the village

Project Type Level Site Location Status Tutor

Public and Community Year 1th Semester (5 Weeks) Conwy,North Wales Individual Work Carl Meddings (c.meddings@hud.ac.uk)

Historically , Conwy is a wall town and community in the north coast of Wales. Which consists the town castle, town wall and brick house. It represents the ancient history by the instruction of Edward I of England. In this project, the concept is from the Conwy’s development process which bring the new envision of fish market designing to the site. Meanwhile, fishing is a famous industry in Conwy . It aims to provide the selling fishing area and restaurant nearby Conwy Quay.

Evolution to Revolution For the background supports ,Conwy castle and town wall were the oldest structure since 14th century. The infrastructure were still keeping the historic appearance nowadays. Conceived the new building is an innovative thing in the project challenges. It need to consider the possible invention and implementation change in Conwy u Q ay. C ‘ yndie Coral shing’ is one of the popular activities , which collect live sh for use in aquariums. Coral reef is a numerous shing species growing in Conwy u q ay. Captured the C ‘ oral Polyp’ features and growth is a design notion to become the new landmark nearby Castle and u Q ay. Therefore, revolution the town appearances is a signicant notion for the project issue

Experimental Building The u q estion are more explores, to what extent an existing form of open-air context can be intro duced and try to follow the coral shape. The shape arrangement are transformed from the coral fertilization which consists the dissociation to adult process in the building development. The experimentation can try to settle in the chosen site. Rain harvest and sky-light would be derived from the concept of coral growth environment to ensure enough ventilation and natural lighting for each Kiosk.

Sustainable Kiosk The people activities are intertwined ,adding complexity to the urban experience and create unique human and space interactions. Each particular space is intricately interwoven with those around through a carefully calibrated network and interstitial spaces in the concept design

Early Conwy

Conwy Castle

Fortifications

Modern Conwy

Conwy became established on the banks of the Conwy estuary due to its geographical and natural location, creating an ideal spot for the establishment of an abbey. However the town of Conwy was founded by the English king Edward I. After subduing Wales Edward decided to build a chain of castles in Wales to hold down the Welsh.

Conwy Castle was besieged by the Welsh in 1295. When Owain Glyndwr led a rebellion in 1403 the rebels captured Conwy Castle by trickery. Meanwhile walls were erected around the new town. They were 30 feet high and several feet thick. The walls were strengthened by 21 towers. There were 3 gates in the walls.

The fortifications played an important part in the conflicts in North Wales over the coming centuries. Notably they were involved in the Glyndwr Rising of the early 15th century, the Wars of the Roses in the late 15th century and the English Civil War in the 17th century. By the end of the 17th century, however, the castles were ruinous

During the 60s and following decades, Conwy battled against some pretty brisk head winds, the steady decline and subsequent under investment of British tourism especially seaside resorts as the British public began holidaying overseas via cheap package holidays. Today Conwy is a charming little town. Today the population of Conwy is 3,900.

YORK HUB

YORK , ENGLAND Project Type Level Site Location Status Tutor

Public and Community Year 3 , 2nd Semester (12 Weeks) York ,North Yorkshire Individual Work Carl Meddings (c.meddings@hud.ac.uk)

The project aims to design a community library for local people and teenager using the facilities in York UK . The site surrounded residential and student accommodation adjoined to River Foss .The final project focus on environmental atmosphere creating the ecstatic ambiance in the building site.

Keep Walking in Community Hub The community hub echoes the sitting of the u q ay environment adjoining sea, open and residential district in site selection. It supports the recreation service for the purpose of site area. For the observation of York experience, the local people prefer to walk to the alley and feeling the indigenous atmosphere exploring in town center. Therefore. The library have been adopted the three element ‘ Experience , Exploration and Feeling the atmosphere’ to retreat the reading experience.

Outdoor balcony in front of internal reading area The building design set back from the street as a cover for pedestrian path from sun and rain through balcony. The idea interpret that “more peaceful backyard life and more vibrant outdoor area for life” leads to the formation of site massing and layout. The balcony have to create the circulation between inside and outside to make more people see the river view and exhibition showcase

Sense of Protection for Reading Space It is connected to the city physically but at the same time disconnected from the city spiritually. This permeability and threshold is introduced to the design. Another purpose is to rethinking the library function from low and high level. The facilities will be consider the hierarchy system c( hildren area to adult space ) The library need to consider reading experience for each oor. It aims to keep the connectivity and maintaining access for the vertical space. Hence,The people would have a walking journey to experience a diversied programmer in each oor.

“Physical Model is a Language: Towards a Unified Representation for Continuous and Discrete Models” Review the undergraduate study period, I would like to use the physical model present the final form of design context - building height , people activities and circulation in site model. The physical model is a communication to interpret the idea of human activities and design process in Year two and Year three design studio. The renovation and conversion of a former clothing factory dating back to the 1930s in York, England. The impacts of innovative library is a main concerns through physical model in design process, to deal with social context between old and new residence in living district. Continuous model is a design process blending in the environment and building relationship in year two period.

The discrete model is a various massing form process in final year. Used the organic form to present the site environment is a initial idea in design stage , but it merely emphasized the form shape not a site relationship . Subsequently, the two block of library hall have been a final form in design progress due to adjacent transportation and circulation - how people access the building with transportation. Finally, Physical model were shown the relationship between people and public space in final project. “ Drawing is the only thing I’ve found in which I can lose myself completely. I love it. It started as something that relaxed me “

Since I was undergraduate students , I would like to sketch the building and objects shape in undergraduate period. My drawing is to know how the site context can be more energetic in the design, which studied adjacent people and community activities in paper. For the silhouette drawing, which emphasize the harmony of constitutes in the piece, also contributes to my architectural belief. Every element of context, no matter people, houses, water or mountain, merges into one single scene in the sketching.

My drawing style is to kept the blank space left in the drawings . It merely emptiness but indeed represent something meaningful like the flow of fluid. The value of sketching and silhouette drawing drives my design attitude and leads to my preferences to more subtle approach when I think about architecture and my attempt to blend the architecture into the context and to avoid buildings completely standing out from the surroundings. For me, the stunning of building factor should come from the inside of the piece with its meaningfulness , not solely form and appearance.
