I watched a facebook video recently. The short clip was a collection of moments when celebrities have spoken out about what they truly believe has the ability to change the world for the good. It was a tribute to women who have worked hard to achieve their dreams, women who have not let failure or the opinions of others stand in their way. It was a message I know all women need to hear, a message to pass onto daughters, nieces and granddaughters.

She, along with many others, know that if we focus on empowering our girls, the world can only move in a more positive direction. This issue we had a chat with Ruth on her program moving teen girls towards a stronger understanding of their identity and the true potential they hold.

Cheyenne Tozzi is the stunning ambassador for the NEW Westfield Miranda and we were thrilled to have received this image for the cover of our local zine. With her beach blonde hair and athletic physique, we feel Cheyenne represents the ‘everywoman’ in the Shire and felt it was an absolute must to feature her in the issue leading us into warmer weather.

What’s I AM without fashion? We explored the racks of two new local boutiques providing the fashionable folk amongst us with unique choices in style. The Exchange Closet, located in Sylvania Waters, is the newest edition to the prelove fashion providers in the area. If you love labels like, DVF, Lover, Prada and Louboutin, then popping into The Exchange Closet before your next big event is a must.

The new childrenswear boutique, Joshy and Bee, also grabbed our attention this issue. Belinda Renehan-Coughlan opened the quaint boutique beside Cronulla Railway Station a few months ago and hasn’t looked back in her mission to fill the Cronulla childrenswear gap. Stylish fashion options for children between the age of 6—12 years is now available beachside Cronulla.

The ah-mazing I AM contributors are also back for another issue. From fitness, food, health, business and travel, we have covered it all. I would also like to make special mention of our newest member to the I AM team. Miss Eva Gosk is a local Cronulla marketing guru and for issue #16 she has reported on two LOVES, healthy eating and successful marketing for small business. Both articles offer practical advice and we know Eva’s columns will be a huge hit with the I AM reader.

One final note, for all of those who have questioned as to why we have moved to Monthly we’ll put it simply … we just have too much incredible content not to.

Cheyenne Tozzi ...

‘The face’ of Westfield Miranda.

Westfield has announced that international model, musician and TV presenter Cheyenne Tozzi is the face of the new $435 million Westfield Miranda redevelopment which will open late 2014.

Cronulla-born Cheyenne shot to fame at the age of 13 when she became one of the youngest models ever to grace the cover of Harper’s Bazaar. Since then, Cheyenne has built an international empire around her modelling career, recently appearing alongside Naomi Campbell and Nicole Trunfio in reality TV show The Face, as well as performing internationally as lead singer with her rock & blues band, Van Hoorn.

Commenting on her new local role, Cheyenne Tozzi said, “I feel very honoured to be announced as the ambassador for the new Westfield Miranda. Growing up in Cronulla I spent so much time shopping at Westfield Miranda with my Mum and my sister, Tahyna and going to the cinema with my friends.

I am very excited to be part of the new Westfield Miranda, which when it opens in late 2014 will be one of Sydney’s premiere locations to shop, eat and be entertained.

Finally, the Sutherland Shire will have the ultimate shopping and dining destination.’’

So, what about the redevelopment of Westfield?

The project will see the centre expand by approximately 19,000 square metres (sqm) to 127,000sqm of gross lettable area with the addition of more than 100 specialty retailers.

A three level galleria fashion mall with some of the best domestic and international fashion brands, connecting between an upgraded David Jones and a fully refurbished Myer department store; an outdoor restaurant precinct with multiple dining options to suit singles, couples and families, a brand new artisan fresh food market and new full-line Woolworths and a relocated 10-screen multiplex Event cinema, including Gold Class and VMax are just some of the key features of the redevelopment.

Excitement is building for the NEW Miranda Westfield reveal, which is set for October this year.

To empower teenage girls!

10 mins with Esteem Designz creator Ruth Lewis-Jones.

Society and the media has a lot to answer for.

Television programs, the news, the internet, social media and magazines are all culprits. Each industry adding to the unrealistic story being fed to girls on how they are expected to look and act, providing them with an expectation that is not only unhealthy, in some cases, it’s lethal.

Studies performed in 2009 analysed the effect this ‘societal’ expectation has on teenage girls, and the results were alarming. The studies revealed that one in five teenage girls were suffering from emotional or behavioural problems due to low self-esteem. They were experiencing self destructive behaviour, like; depression, anxiety, substance abuse and poor mental and physical health, to name a few.

Local Shire woman Ruth Lewis-Jones came up with a solution. She designed a program that has the ability to equip and empower teenage girls. The program is called Esteem Designz and it’s purpose is to encourage a sense of identity, giving self-esteem strength.

I AM: Why is this program so important to you, have you experienced low self-esteem yourself?

Ruth: I definitely experienced low self-esteem throughout my school days and beyond. The main attributor to my low self-esteem (and many others) was a lack of understanding and confidence in my real identity. I didn't know who I was, and therefore never felt secure in myself, always feeling the need to prove myself, never fully accepted, trying to 'fit in' instead of just fitting with alike people. This is a struggle that the majority of teens face and something I witnessed within my girls group at youth, which makes it even harder to challenge the deceiving messages through the media, peer pressure, high expectations, perfectionism etc etc.

Seeing my youth girls struggle is what inspired and motivated me to create something to help be a solution to these ever-increasing issues that leave girls feeling trapped in low self-esteem and unaware of their value, purpose and strength.

With the focus on helping girls explore their identity throughout Esteem Designz and develop key coping mechanisms, I hope for girls to develop a deep sense of security in who they really are, knowing their value, unique characteristics, strength and ability to face these pressures head-on, standing firm in confidence.

I am thankful for my experience of low self-esteem and lack of confidence, as devastating as it was, because it has given me the drive and passion to make a difference and help others escape this dangerous trap.

I AM: What a world this would be if low self-esteem didn't exist...

Ruth: I would love to live in a world without low self-esteem and lack of identity. There is immense security and joy in truly knowing and being completely content and confident in who you really are.

No longer would teens feel the need to display a fake version of themselves to fit in, feeling pressured to do whatever it takes to feel included, loved, valued, cool, etc. They could be free to be themselves, not turning to self-destructive means to fill gaping holes in their lives, from never feeling good enough, accepted, not meeting expectations, never having the lives and bodies that media portrays as normal and needed.

Teens especially are crying out for affection. But what if they knew their intrinsic worth and didn't need to go searching for it in dangerous means? What if we really knew? We could all be building each other up, not tearing others down out of insecurity and pain. We could all endure, be strengthened, and thrive through life's challenges, instead of giving up hope, dangerously taking it out on ourselves and others. We would all value and respect ourselves and those around us.

With self-awareness, self-confidence, self-belief, self-management, self-worth and self-esteem, we could healthily determine and address our needs, whilst having empathy and compassion for others.

We would be free.

How does it work?

Ruth works with Schools and Community organisations to give girls a safe and creative environment to explore, express and grow. The program is designed to be fun and interactive. The girls are given a beautifully packaged kit that has been put together with the sole purpose of engaging, equipping and empowering the receiver. The packages provide the girls with practical tools and important coping strategies that will see them through all stages of their life. The goal is to get them engaging positively with themselves, their friends and family, and their community. “It [the program] aims to gently take girls through a journey of self-exploration and empowerment, utilizing the creative process as a joyful, uplifting and transforming experience.

Esteem Designz program aims to be a solution to the ever-increasing issues and confronting pressures girls in our community are constantly facing, helping them navigate these challenging years and develop skills and tools to flourish in life.�

I AM Kristy Di Nuzzo ...

Creator of The Business Mums Playgroup.

Kristy is a marketing specialist, business owner & designer, but as she quickly points out, her most important role is mum to 11 month old Luca.

Essential Baby and the Daily Telegraph have reported on Kristy’s inspirational adventure in creating one of the only playgroup’s held on the weekend for mums who work.

Why is this newsworthy? Well, although a large percentage of mums have been forced back into the work place to keep up with financial demands, surprisingly facilities like playgroups, have not followed suit… leaving working mums left out of the playgroup loop.

When Kristy returned to full time work six months after the birth of her first child she was surprised when her search for a local weekend playgroup came up empty. For Kristy, designating one on one time with her son was something she felt was high on her to-do list, along with juggling her own business and fulltime work. After searching high and low, and even contacting the association for playgroups, she soon worked out that she would have to be the creator of the playgroup she required.

‘The Business Mums Playgroup’ “I started the playgroup to basically fill a personal need. I wanted to get my son into a playgroup, however finding one on the weekend was impossible. I knew my son didn’t have any friends his age or children he interacted with on a regular basis because I work from home. This was something I wanted to provide for my son. The playgroup – which currently has 215 Members – helps me to meet other mums that are likeminded. I knew there had to be working mums out there, like me, that wanted a playgroup on the weekend. The conversation amongst the mums in the group varies between home life and work life and I believe it provides a valuable connection for these women who are managing both.”

& what do the Mums have to say… “ I have been to both play group sessions and I love meeting like minded mothers we can chat not only about our lovely kids but the way we manage working full time and juggling it all. Also because I have only moved to the shire in December last year it has been a great way to discover new play parks in the area.”

“As a working woman you miss out on so many little milestones and experiences of your small children. Unfortunately it's not what most choose to but what it's needed for their families. Going to a playgroup, socialising with other mums and bubs is one of them. You give us mums this opportunity which is amazing. It can give us a feeling of "not just being the working mum" but a great mum that spends quality time with her kids.”

Kristy was recently nominated for the AUSmumpreneur People’s Choice Award for her company Unique Baby Boutique. With a love of ‘anything different’ Kristy became disappointed when shopping for clothes for her son. Childrenswear seemed to follow the same trends - nothing stood out. So what did Kristy do when she couldn’t find what she was looking for? She made it herself and it wasn’t long before her business ‘The Unique Baby Boutique’ kicked off.

Kristy’s core creations are based around funny designs and printing on baby and toddler clothing. All clothing is made to order, and as the orders flow in, the Unique Baby range expands. With a plethora of unique designs, the gap Kristy saw in the Australian childrenswear market has been quickly filled.

3 things we don’t know about you!

“I get upset with the ‘she’s a mum so it’s okay if this or that doesn’t look or work professionally’. I feel in today’s society that we [mums] are still being looked down upon and for me that is just not acceptable. I can hold my own in business and being a mum doesn’t mean I am not capable of performing like the big guns in a top office role. I plan to help remove that ‘mummy’ stigma, that still seems to be sticking, in business.”

“I am very determined to convince women that, yes, they can have it all. I want to convince women who feel they can’t start a business that yes they can, they just need the right tools, the drive and the passion.

Kristy’s top

I have been with my husband for 14 years! We were high school sweethearts and we still love each other now as much as when we first met.

My business is my hobby. It’s what I do for me. Any spare time I have, outside of my home life and marketing day job goes to my business and my other passion, which is the Business Mums Playgroup.”

3 tips for anyone wanting to start their own business…

1. Make sure you research how popular your product or service is. Who the competition is. Whether or not your product or service is different and whether there is a gap for your unique business.

2. Know something about business before you start. Have an understanding of marketing and the basics of how to run a company.

3. Customer service is king! You must deliver a high standard and put your customers first, word of mouth works. With social media word of mouth has never been so effective.

Finally an escape route to designer fashion that doesn’t involve a full day expedition to the City.

Known as TEC by, best friends and co-owners, Natalie Lobina & Vanessa Musgrove, the store provides pre-loved luxury brands from the most extravagant corners of the fashion world. Each piece has been sourced by TEC and selected for it’s quality, design and extravagance. Each TEC coat hanger holds a piece that would normally retail well outside the general public’s budget, but once it makes it to this boutique, it not only has a story to tell, it can be purchased at a fraction of it’s original cost.

I AM stopped by to have a chat with the brains, and beauty, behind this fabulous new addition to Sylvania Waters.

I AM: Why did you decide to open a pre-loved designer boutique in the Shire?

Vanessa: It was an idea that came to us over a few glasses of champagne! [as all great ideas do] We both have children who are now at school and we kept talking about doing something together, however we didn't know what that "something" was!

Natalie: We have always had an interest in fashion and we realised that while the Eastern Suburbs has many quality pre-loved stores, the Shire doesn’t. Our business mantra is that "Beautiful things are meant to be shared", hence our desire to make our vision come to life! >>>

I AM: The pre-loved tag can have that ‘used’ stigma attached to it. What do you have to say to those in preference of something new as opposed to something that has been worn by others?

Vanessa: The biggest struggle with opening a pre-loved store is the preconception of pre-loved meaning junk that no one else wants. Don't get us wrong . . . we believe that thrift stores have their place, however The Exchange Closet is the luxury level of thrift! We go through each item with a fine tooth comb - it needs to be immaculate for us to consider having it in our store. We would never just take something if it wasn't 100% - if we wouldn't wear it, then we don't expect our customers to buy or wear it. Many people visit our store and don't realise that our items are pre-loved. They often state that it looks brand new - that's the biggest compliment we can get!

I AM: There are very few places to get high-end designer-wear in the Shire. What labels are gracing the TEC racks at the moment?

Natalie: We have many Australian designers on the racks at the moment, such as Sass & Bide, Zimmerman, Willow and Scanlan & Theodore.

Internationally, we stock Prada, Herve Leger, Alexander Wang, Philip Lim, Christian Louboutin and many more! We are also thrilled to announce that The Exchange Closet will be selling canvas totes and pochettes from, the LA based company, My Other Bag. Their products are inexpensive, eco-friendly bags that are inspired by the designer bags we all know and love. We are the first ‘My Other Bag’ stockists in Australia.

Do you have a favourite piece? An item that almost didn’t make it to the rack?

Vanessa: I'm loving the pre-loved Alexander Wang tan leather skirt with an asymmetrical zip which is currently on our racks - great for summer and/or winter weather. It's a timeless piece, well priced at $380 and one which will fit into anyone's wardrobe - particularly mine!

Natalie: I'm in love with the pre-loved Nicola Finetti Leather and Shearling vest, the leather is so soft I don’t think it’s even been worn! It’s unbelievable value at $290.

Designers who make the TEC Top 3.

Vanessa: As we are coming into Summer, I would say that our Top 3 designers would be Camilla - easy to wear and colourful kaftans, YSL and Diane von Furstenberg – both of which we currently have in-store. They are both very light silk dresses, perfect for the upcoming summer party season!

When it comes to personal style, what is your favourite wardrobe item?

Vanessa: I do like buying investment pieces (when finances allow) so, I would have to say my Givenchy black silk/wool dress, which I bought about 10 years ago and still wear today. I bought it on sale and whenever I'm in doubt over what to wear, I can always rely on this dress. The quality of material and the style of the dress makes it very easy to wear and one can never have too many little black dresses in their wardrobe!

Natalie: On a very recent trip to New York, I visited Saks on 5th Ave and fell in love with a pair of Jimmy Choo's. Of course, I just had to have them.

How convenient that I purposely forgot to bring a pair of shoes to wear to a wedding that we were attending a few days later in Florida. As they say "you get what you pay for", they are the most comfortable pair of shoes I've ever worn. They're my favourite sentimental piece!

Kidswear … what’s not to love? The childrens-wear industry is growing at a rapid pace and when compared to women’s fashion in popularity, it’s almost head to head.

Bee: “I love that the children of today take such a huge interest in what they are wearing. Joshy adores picking out what he is going to wear each day.

There are so many options for our little people – whether they want to be a superhero, a princess, a pirate or even a “mini me”!”

Australia is creeping up there in the style stakes. Australian women, in the I AM opinion, understand style and rock it with the best of them, including the Europeans.

Bee: “I have to say USA has my attention and I have a huge amount of clothing which I import from Los Angeles. Joshy and Bee loves to be a bit beachy and a bit rock star, and the clothes I import really give off that feel which is perfect for my Cronulla location.”

So here’s the story on that little store you have been checking out whilst stuck at the lights at Cronulla Station.

The store is owned by Belinda Renehan-Coughlan and yes, she’s a local. It’s a quaint little boutique but the variety of children’s clothing far outweighs the space it is enclosed in.

After the birth of her son, Joshy, Belinda ditched a career in law and created a job that accommodated her new lifestyle.

Cronulla mall holds so many stores, from women’s and men’s fashion to gorgeous apparel for toddlers, but somehow entrepreneurs have avoided the 6 years and over market…

Bee: “My main goal is to design a line for 9-12 year olds as there is a huge gap in the market for age appropriate, pretty, yet funky clothing. Watch this space!”

Bee: “I love researching, I love a bargain and I love clothes. Joshy and Bee has been providing beautiful designer clothing at a fantastic price since 2010 online, and now that Joshy has turned 4, it’s the perfect time to open a store! Some may say I am going backwards as so many companies go from having a shopfront to online but I adore people – working in the shop is my dream job and my little man could not be more excited to have a shop named after him and at the train station to boot!”

The hauntingly ethereal voice of Lou Vanstone as you entered set the tone for the Festival.

With around 80 stalls and numerous, empowering events throughout the day, readers, healers , life coaches, feng shui masters, natural medicine and the main event, none other than Lisa Williams herself. I was fortunate enough to catch her show and can honestly say, seeing her live would make any skeptic have a serious rethink.

Rosie’s Dream.

From a very early age Rosie knew that she had a special gift. Her Dad, with his own very strong sixth sense, encouraged her to explore it. When she was young she used to see spirit, which at first frightened her until she learned more about her gift. Finding it difficult to explain, Rosie said she knew things about people and often had an eerie feeling when she was in certain places, something that she still feels today, often dreaming of things that eventually happened.

Rosie believes that we all carry the power to connect to another level; some people are just more open to it.

It was always Rosie’s dream to embrace her passion and put her gift to good use and what better way to do that than to have a spiritual, inspirational and motivational shop, aptly named Embrace, with a collective of psychics, mediums, numerologists, healers and tarot card readers.

Embrace opened in Westfield Miranda in 2010 and is known for its down to earth, honest and accurate style of readings. Rosie also holds her annual Festival of Dreams. The Festival has grown so much since its inaugural event 4 years ago, that it had to be held at the much bigger venue, the Hordern Pavilion. A year in the making, from late nights sitting around the dining room table brainstorming ideas, to Harry T having the premonition that Lisa Williams would be Guest of Honour. It was all coming together, the universe and energies had aligned. The dream of Rosie was coming to fruition.

This month’s I AM reader question: “If I exercise every day, does it really matter what I eat ...... or drink?”

Emma:

YES and NO.

If you want to change your body shape, achieve optimal health, and allow your body to reach it’s full working physical potential, then absolutely YES. What you eat and drink is just as important, if not more so than the amount of exercise you do.

If you absolutely love your food and drink, and are happy with the way you look and feel, then NO it does not matter so much what you eat or drink.

Just make sure you are doing enough daily exercise to offset the kilojoules you are consuming!

For most of us, the answer is yes.

If you are anything like me, it’s more than a little annoying to feel like you are working your butt off at training, only to keep having a peek behind you to find your butt hasn’t gone anywhere! If this is you, and you can honestly say you are training hard enough and often enough, then for most people the answer lies in what you put into your mouth on a daily basis.

Did you know it will take a 45 minute walk to burn off a jam doughnut, or 16 minutes to burn the kilojoules equivalent to a medium banana? Or how does a 3 hour and 40 minute walk sound to burn off the 12 inch pepperoni pizza you had for dinner on the weekend?

If you are looking to be in your best possible physical condition exercise and nutrition go hand in hand. It’s hard to shape up on food alone, and likewise you can exercise until you can barely move, yet refueling with a hamburger and chips defeats the whole purpose of the work out you just did!

As for the whole “nutrition is more important than exercise for weight loss” debate, I for the record sit uncomfortably on the fence. Neither is more important than the other. Both nutrition and exercise play integral roles in anyone’s weight loss journey. You have to eat well. And you have to move. It’s kilojoules in vs. kilojoules out. The highest number each day wins!

Here are some easy to do exercises that burn some serious kilojoules.

And if that Mars Bar miraculously finds it’s way past your lips, then work it off with some of these ...

Fast skipping with a rope = 1560kJ / 30 minutes Soccer = 1080kJ / 30 minutes Tennis = 900kJ / 30 minutes Running at 10km/hr = 1260kJ / 30 minutes.

Team up against Poverty ...

NO FUSS! The team is called ‘No Fuss’ and when it comes to walking 100 kilometres to spread the word against poverty, these guys live up to their name.

The No Fuss team , which includes 3 ‘Oxfam Legands’, have been participating in the Oxfam Trailwalker event for a few years now raising in excess of $15,000 for the cause.

The Oxfam Trailwalker annual event challenges teams of 4 to walk 100 kilometres over 48 hours. It is a serious physical challenge for those who are brave, to raise funds to support people living in poverty all over the world. Giulia, owner of Hypoxi Studio Cronulla.

Giulia is an ideas girl, thankfully she also has a knack for good business. She is the owner of the Hypoxi Studio Cronulla and the brains behind Hunter & Thor, a Sydney based consulting, strategy and PR agency.

This girl about town is inspiring I AM HQ with her ‘doing it’ attitude and we jumped at the opportunity to lunch with her to discuss life and business in the Shire.

Giulia: Basically Hunter & Thor is designed to help online and small businesses. We provide a variety of services, from assistance with the start up stage through to business growth and achieving specific business goals. We also assist with the ‘social media phenomena’ and provide advice on how to use outlets like this more effectively.

But wait there’s more! You are a Sports Agent?

Giulia: Yes. I am currently managing one of Australia’s most talented women in League, Ruan Sims. My job is to get her in the right team and help her with food planning, contract negotiation and things like diary management. Ruan has recently been accepted into the LFL – Lingerie Football League, which we are very excited about.

Lingerie Football...is that exactly how it sounds?

Giulia: [smiling] Google it!

Editor: Which I did! And yes, it is a serious game of league, but the participants, who are all women, are scantily clad in “performance wear”. The uniforms, which once included a uniform garter belt with lace attached to a bra type top and underwear, now resembles the uniform more commonly worn by volleyball players. Now, that must be a popular sport!

Busy girl! What does a typical day in the life of Guilia generally involve?

Giulia: An early 6:30am start with a diary and schedule check followed by a weights and cardio training session at the gym. My first work stop is always to the Hypoxi Studio for client appointments. At lunchtime I generally like to go for a walk in the fresh Cronulla air and then a typical afternoon will see me following up with Hunter & Thor clients. I also try to squeeze a sneaky Hypoxi treatment in for myself when the studio is quiet. My days are definitely busy and long, but I always find time to unwind with a cup of tea when I get home.

5 things we don’t know about you …

I am very pedantic. I think it is a side effect of being under pressure and leading a busy lifestyle, a choice requiring strong organisational skills. I am a bit of a perfectionist and a little OCD in some areas, like how many times a day I look at my diary.

I am a bit of a food connoisseur. To my own credit, I am quite a good cook. I have been known to put an amazing dish together with whatever is lying in the fridge. I have a knack for putting the right foods together.

I love to travel. I love places that are hot, tropical and close to the beach. A place to relax and unwind. Beach activities are another love. Jet skiing, snorkelling, beach volleyball ….

And then a cheeky cocktail poolside.

How important is living a healthy & active lifestyle to you?

Giulia: This is such an important lifestyle choice. Some of my older [Hypoxi] clients, who have experienced undesirable body changes, need assistance with nutrition and food choices. Eating foods that are either organic or raw and not processed, is essential for weight loss and overall good health. Your body on the outside is a reflection of what is happening on the inside. I find clients who do eat better , look younger and achieve results faster. In my opinion, a great looking body and achieving an overall feeling of optimal health, comes down to good nutrition and diet choices. With fitness, I prefer resistance training along with cardio. I think it’s important to keep muscles strong and joints loose.

Let’s break it down...

Developed by a team of Austrian doctors in 1999, Hypoxi has been proven as one of the most effective targeted cellulite and fat burning methods on the market today.

The simplest way to explain the Hypoxi procedure is this; compression is applied via a suit that is also fitted with vacuums. The role of the suit is to help target fat while the wearer performs exercise via one of the specifically designed machines. This process has been proven to help target fat in areas where fat is normally reluctant to budge. We tried it!

Most people know me as the girl with a huge curiosity for anything and everything ‘new’. I am always up for a new experience or adventure and love it when local businesses ask me to try their products or services.

I was invited recently for a session of Hypoxi at the Cronulla studio and luckily got to try out a few of the machines.

What I found; Although the sessions are designed as a workout for the body, the process was effortless. I was either walking slowly on a treadmill or lying on my back while the suit, I was comfortably cocooned in, restricted rhythmically around my body. After the 30 minute session with Guilia at Hypoxi I felt completely relaxed, a feeling similar to that of a full body massage.

A tough workout - not a chance. Did I feel good after my session? Completely.

Worth EATING...

“Excuse me, but do you have a gluten free option?”

Yeah! Salad.

Not the best response you’re after, especially if you’re a true lover of food. I am of this category; I look forward to every meal of the day. I can’t sleep if I’m too excited for breakfast; I ask what’s for dinner? ... whilst I’m eating lunch.

Guilty as charged, I am a foodie, a true lover of food.

Now don’t be fooled friends, my eternal love for food is specifically reserved for the healthy, delicious and nutritious kind. And although in some places it’s still a mission to find something healthy or gluten free, there are some that serve nothing but this sort!

NO! I won’t accept your salad.

So here are a couple of my favourite picks for clean healthy eating around Cronulla.

Mint Organics [Cronulla] It may be a bit of a walk from the main arteries that keep Cronulla hustlin’ and bustling, but, Mint Organics is definitely worth the trip!

For such a small little corner café, they boast a selection of salads, baked goods and a shelf of healthy produce and products for your convenience. Plus, smoothie lovers rejoice, as Mint has a whole blackboard devoted to customised smoothie creations!

Make sure to go in early as their goods get gobbled up quite quickly (You have been warned!).

I recommend: Brown rice sushi, Quinoa & pumpkin salad with roast chicken and pesto, Ginger and lime shots.

Heart & Soul Organic Café [Cronulla] This little beauty, tucked away alongside Cronulla’s busy mall, is filled with colourful foods, juices, dairy and sugar free treats as well as meat-free hot food options.

Gluten free folk, this is your sanctuary! Almost everything on this mouth-watering menu is devourable with no dietary modification necessary. (The only thing you may be craving afterwards is some meat!)

For the coffee lovers; your morning brew can be made with regular milk, soy, oat or almond milk (try almond, its delicious!). There simply couldn’t be a better name for this place, Heart & Soul has won mine and is now a ritual pit stop on a weekend morning.

I recommend: Chickpea curry with quinoa, Gluten free muesli bowl, Sherpa muffins & Cinnamon spice chai.

So no

… , I won’t accept your salad, (potentially) tainted with crumbs and negativity. There are some that have whole-heartedly embraced healthy foods and gluten free options. And, even if you’re allergy-free, go and treat yourself: guilt free! You never know, you may fall in love with healthy food just like me.

SIT UP straight!

Gettin your ‘sit’ on!... with Lana Johnson.

Usually the first thing that goes wrong when people sit down is that they don’t sit correctly on their pelvis, and because our pelvis is the foundation of our spine when we are seated, it’s very important that we lay the foundation by placing our pelvis correctly on the chair.

So if you sit on a chair as you would normally do, you would probably sit with your pelvis tucked underneath you. However, in this position you should feel your spine has a little bit of a curve as it goes down. Moreover, with this slumped posture you are actually sitting more on your tail bone and this creates a lot of pressure coming up through the centre of your spine.

Having said that, the first thing I would like you to do if you are following along at home is stand up and put your hands just underneath the bottom folds of your gluteus muscles (bottom cheeks).

You will feel that at the base of your bottom cheeks there are two bony points. These two bony points are your “sit bones” and they are the foundation of the bottom of your pelvis. With your hands there, sit down on the chair so that you are sitting on your hands, and then wiggle your bottom around so that under your fingers you can feel the two sit bones pressing down into the chair.

Now that you know where your sit bones are, keep a hold on them and stand back up from your chair again. Before you sit down the main trick is to pull your sit bones as wide as you can so that you are spreading your bottom cheeks apart. Then start to stick your bottom out the back like you are about to do a squat and sit down on the chair so that it feels like your sit bones are as far apart from one another as they can be.

Once you are seated you can take your hands out from underneath your bottom and you should be able to feel that your two sit bones are pressing down onto the seat of your chair. >>>

Now that your sit bones are wide, your pelvis has a good wide base as a foundation for the rest of your spine to be able to stack up in a much more relaxed way and with a better alignment. With this correct sitting posture all the three normal back curves should be present.

Finally, just a few more tips if you have to spend a lot of hours sitting on a chair: Try to avoid sitting in the same position for more than 30 minutes.

At work, adjust your chair height and work station so you can sit up close to your work and tilt it up at you.

Rest your elbows and arms on your chair or desk, keeping your shoulders relaxed.

When sitting in a chair that rolls and pivots, don’t twist sideways at the waist while sitting. Instead, turn your whole body.

When standing up from the sitting position, move to the front of your chair, then stand up by straightening your legs. Avoid bending forward at your waist.

If you are having problems getting to sleep or staying asleep, look at the simple things first:

The Environment...

your bedroom calming and restful? it clean, free from dust, well ventilated and uncluttered? your mattress comfortable? the room too cold or too hot? it free from electronic devices and artificial light? it noisy?

Make small changes.

Keep your bedroom a relaxing space, not a multi-purpose room full of bills, computers and filing cabinets.

Don’t over-dress for bed and keep the room well ventilated.

Keep the bedroom dark.

Remove all electronic devices from the room.

Use earplugs if it’s noisy or if your partner snores.

Your body.

Do you have a routine that gives your body signals that you are getting ready to sleep, a warm shower or hot milk.

Do you have stimulants like caffeine, and sugar, alcohol and cigarettes in the evening?

Are you doing any exercise?

Do you nap during the day?

Do you have any pain?

Are you cold or too hot?

Are you suffering from stress, anxiety or depression?

Make those small changes.

Go to bed and get up at regular times every day.

Stick to early in the day for your favourite legal stimulants.

Do some regular exercise, preferably in the morning and outside.

Try not to nap during the day.

Don’t ignore the problem!

Getting help.

See your doctor about pain, stress, anxiety, depression or other health issues affecting your sleep that you can’t fix on your own.

Look into relaxation, meditation and exercise.

And then I had a brain explosion.

What if I could offer other mums the same opportunity that I had? The luxury of working from home, to their own hours, without sacrificing their roles at home?

Bingo!

So the very next day, I put a call out, on social media no less. And what I received was an overwhelming response to my so-called ‘ad’. I now have a handful of mums lined up to help me with my work, forming a Mum’s Army of sorts.

We support and help each other out, so that if someone gets sick, or goes on holidays there is a group of other mums available to lend a helping hand.

So how do you know you are at the point where you need to ask for help?

You are grumpy.

Knowing WHEN to ask for help...

I had fallen behind in my work, which I had never done before, and found that almost every email I was sending was in the tone of – ‘Sorry for the delay…'

One night at dinner, I said to my husband, ‘I am so busy I don’t know what to do next.’

His response, ‘I know, you have been really grumpy all week.’

To which I almost blew him out of the water with a spray of expletives, but held my tongue as I realized, I had been an absolute, undeniable bitch to him that entire week. Yes, just that week. And swearing at him at that particular moment was only going to reinforce that.

So then hubby asked,

‘What can we do to fix it?’

I had already been thinking the same thing. I started my own business to create a more flexible lifestyle. But in the last week I had been working every spare moment, sometimes yelling at the kids to leave me alone whilst mummy worked, when I should have been getting them ready for bed I was back to square one.

All of a sudden the things that were bringing you joy are becoming a chore. You know you shouldn’t feel this way, but you keep grinding away hoping that it will all change soon.

There is no getting on top of it.

No matter how hard you try or how long you work, the point where you settle back into your ‘Everything Is Awesome’ rendition just never seems to get closer.

You are missing deadlines.

All those promises to clients are going out the window. First it was just one – which is ok, we are all allowed to slip every so often.

But suddenly there is another slip, then another, and another. Sooner or later your clients are going to go elsewhere because you aren’t providing the service you promised.

Now that you know you need to ask for help, who do you ask?

Well that all depends on your business. Sitting down and mapping out what you are doing, but don’t need to be doing, will help to guide you on where you need to outsource some work to.

There are some great local businesses that can help you out in their areas of expertise. This way you can concentrate on what you want to be working on and leave the other parts of your business to experts in that field. And at the same time, you will be giving another business the opportunity to grow.

Because in the end, knowing that you need to ask for help means that your business is growing bigger than just you. And isn’t that where you want your business to go?

Teens, Travel & Tantrums...

All the Mums out there are nodding their heads after reading the heading alone right? Well I am not a Mum, I am an Aunty, the fun Aunty that gets to do all the fun things, as close to a Mum as you can be without ever having to change a nappy.

About a year ago I was with my first baby girl (who somewhere along the lines ended up being 15), and she started telling me about how she wanted to travel and all the places she had researched…very impressive…wanderlust had set in.

Being the fabulous Aunty that I am I decided to take her to my other home, which as you know is, if you have been following my articles, Thailand. So the planning, saving, paperwork….and convincing of the mother began.

Finally the big day had arrived. Cue hysterical mother waving her first born baby goodbye at immigration with her Aunty that she still wasn’t so sure was capable of keeping such a precious person safe.

The plane ride…I don’t want to re-live this bit so I won’t go into too much detail but I know you can all hear your own kids in the backseat saying…”are we there yet!”.

To see the culture shock and awe on the face of someone so young with so little life experience is what it is all about. From a small beachside community south of Sydney to the often overwhelming, magnificent city of Bangkok in 9 hours flat. Bumper to bumper Traffic, devastating poverty, unimaginable wealth, motorbikes with an entire family on them, beggars, street food and that bloody heat. All so new and to be with someone I love so much whilst she experienced all this for this first time was nothing short of amazing.

The first day (and most days after that) - remembering my first overseas trip I was sure my niece would be up and ready to explore before the sun rose. Wrong! Finally at 9am I dragged her out of bed and went shopping. MBK is a shopper’s paradise for tourists and my niece was in her element. I was already imagining the “Dad send more money” call that would be required after the first 24 hours of a 2 week trip.

Then began the very long days taking my baby to all of the necessary tourist traps. A must on your first visit to any country but so incredibly boring when you have been there a hundred times. Temple - check. Overcrowded markets - check, Chao Phraya River - check, overpriced floating markets - check…tiger temple, getting more interesting, then came the elephants. West of Bangkok in a city called Kanchanaburi we jumped into the river and swam with these incredible creatures. I can honestly say it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. My niece absolutely loved it and the best part about the entire thing was that I got to experience it with her.

Now for the tantrums…more mine than hers.

I wanted her to experience everything this new land had to offer, including the exotic food that can only be found in South East Asia. A resounding NO came from her month…Aunty Kylie had a tantrum. I wanted her to come bike riding around Lumpini Park to see all the unusual sites one can only see in Lumpini early in the morning, yet another resounding NO yet another Aunty Kylie tantrum. No matter how much you want them to do something, the kids of today just won’t do it if they don’t want to.

So, travelling with teenagers, would I recommend it? Only with the ones you love dearly.

I had an unbelievable experience in a country I have been to so many times with the most amazingly crazy beautiful person. Letting your kids experience things is a must….watching them do it, AMAZING! Love you baby…. Aunty Kylie xxx

The guys at Keep It Young fitness described Alex Daleo as a legend and a mate. When his life was tragically cut short whilst travelling in Croatia recently, the shockwave of grief was felt throughout the Shire.

AJ, Travis & Josh from Keep it Young made it their mission to give Alex the farewell he deserved. An event showering him with immense love where ever it is he now resides. With the support of Shire folk, sports legends and businesses, the team raised over $15,000 for the Daleo family. The outdoor fitness event #sweat4alex will now be held every year in memory of Alex and the family he left behind.
