Holland Festival The new and the radical take centre stage for this year’s Holland Festival, one of Europe’s biggest and most prestigious performing arts extravaganzas.

Widely regarded as the greatest innovator of classical music of the 20th century, in the year he turns 90 celebrated maverick composer Pierre Boulez is the focal point of Amsterdam’s Holland Festival. This annual kaleidoscope of culture has an international reputation for stripping away the pomp and ceremony of the concert hall, replacing plush seats and exorbitant ticket prices with free performances in unexpected locations. So it’s no surprise that Boulez’s 1980s foray into real-time electronics, Répons, will be performed in a former gas silo that regularly plays host to epic EDM parties. Crossing genres and defying expectations is part of the Holland Festival DNA. Elsewhere on the programme – which comprises 45 productions over 25 days – acclaimed South African artist William Kentridge follows in the footsteps of Picasso, Chagall and David Hockney in making the leap from gallery to stage, with a production of Alban Berg’s final opera, Lulu. Samuel Beckett’s famous one-act play about loneliness and disillusionment, Krapp’s Last Tape, is performed by Holland Festival alumnus Robert Wilson, while the world’s first ‘Vocaloid’ opera sees vocal synthesizer application Hatsune Miku – one of Japan’s biggest pop stars who ‘performs’ as a 16-year-old manga hologram – starring in Keiichiro Shibuya’s The End. Als het om vernieuwing en experiment in de podiumkunsten gaat, is er geen beter overzicht dan het Holland Festival. Al jaren is het één van de grootste en meest prestigieuze podiumkunstfestivals van Europa. De Franse componist Pierre Boulez staat centraal in deze editie. Hij wordt dit jaar negentig en wordt over het algemeen gezien als één van de grootste vernieuwers binnen de 20ste eeuwse klassieke muziek. Gezien de internationale reputatie van het Holland Festival als breker van podiumtradities - waarbij het pluche van de concertzaal wordt verruild voor vrije zitplaatsen op onverwachte locaties - is het niet zo gek dat Boulez’ experimenten met elektronica veel aandacht krijgen. Zijn elektronische compositie Répons uit 1981 wordt opgevoerd in de gashouder op het Westergasterrein, waar normaalgesproken snoeiharde dance en techno te horen is. Het overbruggen van genres is altijd een belangrijk motief in de programmering van het Holland Festival. Zo volgt de Zuid-Afrikaanse beeldend kunstenaar William Kentridge in de voetstappen van Picasso, Chagall en David Hockney als hij het podium opgaat met zijn versie van Alban Berg’s laatste opera Lulu. Julidans The internationally renowned modern dance festival comes of age, presenting 30 performances from around the world at locations across Amsterdam.

It’s hard to believe, but this summer, Julidans turns 25. What started with three performances (from Belgium and Spain) in the Stadsschouwburg, has blossomed into two weeks of cutting-edge dance performances. One look at the archives reveals a true treasure trove of riches, from La La La Human Steps to Wim VandeKeybus/Ultima Vez; from masters of collaboration Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Akram Khan to holy terrors Dave St-Pierre and VA Wölfl, and from Les Ballets C. de la B. to Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch. But, while this special edition will occasionally glance back at the past, its main focus is on the future. Three icons of modern dance will make an appearance. Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker was one of the three choreographers to grace the very first edition. This time she’ll present Partita 2 (with live music by Bach), the very first duet in which she herself dances (with Boris Charmatz). French choreographer Maguy Marin will be showing two pieces, one recent ((S-ingspiele ), one (S-ingspiele), timeless ((May B ). Inspired by the work of B). Samuel Beckett, May B hasn’t stopped touring since its conception in 1981. But the piece de resistance this edition will come from Jan Fabre. After the eight-hour performance Het is theater zoals te verwachten en te voorzien was from 1982, Fabre now mounts the aptly titled Mount Olympus, a 24-hour marathon with 30 performers spanning four generations. Na de acht uur durende marathonvoorstelling Het is theater zoals te verwachten en te voorzien was uit 1981 komt Fabre nu met de ultieme uitputtingsslag: Mount Olympus, een voorstelling van 24 uur, met zo’n dertig performers uit vier generaties. Als bezoeker kan je in en uit lopen, maar voor de echte bikkels zijn er rustruimtes en een 24-uurs café. Natuurlijk is dit slechts de top van de ijsberg. Bringing a summery blend of site-specific theatre, DJs and fabulous food to a former industrial shipping yard. Long dismissed as de overkant (‘the other side’ – of the River IJ, that is), this annual festival is just one of many reasons to catch a free ferry and head due north, to the bleeding-edge cool Amsterdam-Noord. Entering the post-apocalyptic NDSM-werf – a world of red-brick industrial buildings in varying states of (dis)repair, presided over by creatives and artists – you immediately feel a million miles away from the traditional theatre world. Founded in 1993, Over het IJ Festival has retained an air of anarchy in keeping with its location: far from those mainstream theatres, there’s room for endless experiment that attracts a fresh young audience. Taking place annually, Over het IJ has made a name for itself as a showcase for talented young theatre makers as well as household names. See, for example, the Sea Container Programme, whereby 15 promising artists – who graduated no more than two years previously – are given a former shipping container and instructions to create a 15-minute programme. Many of these performers go on to join the main programme in the future. Over het IJ is het festival van ontdekking en avontuur, door theater op locatie, installaties en duurzaam eten en drinken op de NDSM-werf. Het zal velen ondertussen niet meer ontgaan zijn dat de NDSM-werf in Noord de afgelopen jaren is uitgegroeid tot een uitgaans-hotspot. De voormalige scheepswerf met zijn industriële uitstraling is niet direct een omgeving die je associeert met de traditionele theaterwereld. En daar is het de organisatie van het Over Het IJ Festival precies om te doen. Kwaku Summer Festival Four consecutive weekends of multicultural fun, focused on bringing people and cultures together for a vibrant combination of food, drink, music, dance and sport. Celebrating 40 years in 2015, the Kwaku Festival’s name derives from a statue erected in Suriname in 1963 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the abolition of slavery. Held in one of the city’s most multicultural districts, the Kwaku Festival attracts around 300,000 visitors over the course of its four weekends, making it one of the biggest events on the Amsterdam calendar. Each weekend has a different theme – although all are united by great music, food and atmosphere. The first celebrates the birthday of Nelson Mandela (18 July), the namesake of the vibrant park that hosts the celebrations. Extra attention is paid to art, culture and tourism in the country of Madiba. The second weekend includes ‘Pink Sunday’, with the aim of promoting LGBT acceptance and visibility within the different ethnic groups in Amsterdam, and includes debates and presentations. The third ‘Srefidensi’ weekend marks the independence of Suriname with a special exhibition, and the fourth celebrates 40 years of diversity and unity. A key part of the festival’s programme has traditionally been the Kwaku Cup, which sees football teams of various nationalities (and various ages) compete. While soccer is still a key component, a convivial side programme has grown around the event; two big open-air stages host a fun selection of DJs, live music and dance workshops. There’s also a large Caribbean market and an area that caters especially for younger visitors, with loads of family-friendly entertainment on offer all day. Dit jaar bestaat het Kwaku Festival veertig jaar. Het festival begon in 1975 als Kwakoe, een kleinschalig voetbaltoernooi. Milkshake Festival Anything-goes Milkshake Festival brings all the flavors to the Westerpark. Three years ago, two of Amsterdam’s nightlife titans – pop temple Paradiso and clubbing mecca AIR – joined forces for a new festival concept, with tolerance, liberalism, diversity and acceptance as important as the always-stellar line-up. The concept’s a simple one: genre-crossing music that plays to the strengths of the organisers and highlights Amsterdam’s fabled diversity. Pluk de Nacht Get outside for future cult classics under the stars, at Pluk de Nacht Open Air Film Festival – a breath of al-fresco air. Pluk de Nacht goes with Amsterdam like coffee goes with cake. For 11 nights every August, film lovers flock to former dockyard Het Stenen Hoofd at Westerdoksdijk to catch a movie under the stars. Pluk de Nacht (literally ‘Seize the Night’) began in 2003, with a remit to show movies that rocked the international indie festival circuit but never made it to Dutch cinemas. What started with about 3,000 visitors over four weekends steadily grew into the biggest open-air film festival in the Netherlands, with a steady turnout of around 28,000, and editions in Arnhem and Utrecht. But while popular success has taken Pluk de Nacht into the mainstream, the programming remains anything but – although people come for the vibe and the view as much as for the movies themselves. For the ultimate Pluk experience, get your hands on one of the couple of hundred deckchairs. It’s first come, first served, so on sunny days be sure you’re early – the bar opens at four. Chairs can be reserved for a small donation (minimum €3). You can also sponsor the festival by buying a beer or a snack at one of the stands – although you are allowed to bring your own food, beverages and chairs. Grachtenfestival Amsterdam/ Canal Festival The annual Grachtenfestival Amsterdam excels in taking classical music from the confines of the concert hall out amid the city’s iconic waterways.

Set to attract more than 60,000 visitors from the Netherlands and abroad this summer, the Grachtenfestival Amsterdam is the seamless fusion of two Mokum specialities: the picturesque waterways that celebrated their 400th anniversary in 2013, and the city’s tradition of exquisite, innovative classical music-making. A ten-day celebration of ‘water music’, the festival goes well beyond the realms of Handel and his contemporaries, and even compels the occupants of some of the city’s most exclusive canal-side residences to open their doors for one-off concerts. This year also includes performances along the Defence Line of Amsterdam. According to its programme director Mirjam Wijzenbeek, ‘the aim of the Grachtenfestival is to introduce classical music to a broad audience in unusual ways, allowing promising young performers to excel in extraordinary venues.’ She should know. An accomplished violinist in her own right, Wijzenbeek first came in contact with the festival as a performer, and cites her participation as a defining moment. ‘I really think that the Grachtenfestival turns our city into the world’s most beautiful concert hall,’ she says. Mysteryland With its fairy-tale setting, eclectic blend of artists running the gamut of electronic dance music and broad line-up of creative events, Mysteryland is one of the most unique dance festivals in the world.
